bar, I returned "home" to St. Pete to give it a try. However, after so many years learning to run what became an Iconic bar, creating a new one from scratch was like learning to walk again! After 9 months of research, designing it myself, and dealing with every city department, architects, and contractors ...Enigma was born.

From Georgie’s Alibi to Enigma

One of the pillars of our community are LGBTQ+ Friendly bars. Historically, these are sanctuaries for people to express themselves however they wish. This is a story about the transition for two of the most popular LGBTQ+ bars in St. Petersburg, Georgie’s Alibi and Enigma. Pride’s Executive Director Luke Blankenship sat down with Ed Gonzalez, who was General Manager at Alibi and Owner and Operator of Enigma. What do you feel LGBTQ+ Friendly Bars provide to the community? Somewhere that people can feel completely free to be exactly who they are ...without having to worry about receiving weird looks, being discriminated against, or offending anyone.

Tell me a bit about your background with both Georgie’s Alibi and Enigma?

Georgie's Alibi and Enigma have been two completely different roller coasters! After a year as a barback at the Ft. Lauderdale Alibi, I was asked to transfer to the "soon to open" St. Pete location. Still struggling to "come out", I made the move to what I thought would be an opportunity to bartend and finally be free. My first 5 months were spent doing anything from painting walls to

working security shifts while the building got renovated. Once it was ready, I bartended full-time for a few months while the owners got the place running. Next thing I know, George Kessinger asked me things like: "this Monday I can't be there so instead of bartending, could you keep an eye on things, then lock up at closing". Next thing you know, this 27-year old with zero management experience was thrown the keys to a "Lamborghini without insurance" by an owner who lived 3 1/2 hours away. Fast forward more than 12 crazy yet magical years ...I was ready for something new and wanted to be closer to my family. I moved back to Ft. Lauderdale. A move that only took me 10 months to regret. After strong pressure from many former Alibi employees to move back and open my own

What was so special about Georgie’s?

What made Alibi so incredible was how it managed to transform what was a very rough area into a rocking safe haven! We managed to make everyone regardless of gender, race, age, appearance, or sexual orientation feel not only safe and at home ...but comfortable enough to literally bring THEIR GRANDPARENTS!! That, while incorporating a full-service restaurant with very good food, every type of entertainment you can possibly imagine, and a high-energy dance club.

What sort of similarities does Enigma share with Georgie’s?

The main similarity Enigma shares with Alibi is achieving the same safety and comfort level with just as diverse a clientele as what I witnessed at Alibi ...which I didn't think was possible. The other obvious similarity is a stable staff where most employees have stayed with us for years. Tell me about some of your favorite memories from both bars? This will probably sound strange but some of my favorite memories from Alibi started off as nightmares that very few people even know about ...those few include three employees who are still with me now at Enigma. I say that because of not only what the events taught me about myself, but how much stronger they made me!

The first story I'll share took place just months after I became the GM. I had an entire security staff doing things that were very detrimental to the bar. After exhausting everything I could think of to correct the issues, I fired them all on the same night and had a whole new security team ready to go. The disgruntled trio, along with their friends decided to spend the next three weekends on the sidewalk in front of Alibi picketing me with signs claiming just about any horrible allegation they could think of. All of this was published in a local magazine with details of their accusations, along with pictures of them with their picket signs! I still have a copy of the magazine. When George heard, he didn't believe them, but he felt this was a good opportunity to toughen me up so he didn't answer his phone or return any of my calls for over three weeks ...not exactly making me feel much job security (a move I didn't appreciate then, but do now). Years later after a Saturday night, I uncharacteristically let the rest of the staff go home and stayed at the bar by myself to catch up on paperwork. At around 5am I was leaving the bar when I was held up at gun point, forced back into the bar, and robbed of a decent amount of money we had in a safe. Fortunately about 80% of what we had was hidden in another safe! When the police arrived, there were no fingerprints

or videos to prove my claim so they believed I staged the whole thing ...until I demanded to take a polygraph test (which I passed). I spent months going to work feeling viewed as a possible criminal by some. Luckily, after a few months I received an anonymous phone call with a tip that led to the arrest and conviction of the culprit. I can't describe how great it felt to be able to hand my bosses a letter from the State Attorney confirming that every word I said was true. There has never been a single event in my life that has taught me more about myself than that one! Out of so many memories, I'm going to end with just one more which took place on the night of my final shift at Alibi. At the end of the night after all our work was done, (not my idea) a

group of us filled a 5-gallon pickle bucket with ice, beer, and liquor. We grabbed a ladder and finished our night downing shots on the Alibi roof. There are already some pretty great memories that come to mind from Enigma, but I'm not going to list any of them now because that story is not yet complete.

What is your elevator speech to people who ask why they should visit Enigma? I know I'm biased here but my number one reason is absolutely my amazing staff! Though no one can be "Mary Poppins" all the time, they are all normally very friendly, the Bartenders provide great service, and everyone keeps Enigma very clean. My DJs, Barbacks, Show Director, Managers and Security Guards are all great! Aside from that, I love our sound system plus all that we are able to offer in a space that isn't too small, but is by no means huge.
