INVESTED IN EQUALITY At Franklin Templeton, we proudly join the St.Petersburg community in celebrating LGBT Pride 2017. To us, pride means embracing individual differences, unique experiences, and the wealth of perspectives brought by diversity. It’s why we foster a culture of inclusion, encouraging employees to bring their whole selves to the workplace. This commitment has helped us earn a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2017 Corporate Equality Index and the distinction of being named a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality.”

“I’m so proud to work at a global organization that not only values diversity, but actively makes inclusion a top priority.” — Amy Gordin Vice President, Global Risk & Control St. Petersburg

INTRODUCING YOUR 2017

Grand Marshals

Since 2013, the Grand Marshal selection process has been a community effort with individuals asked to select the Grand Marshals of Tampa Bay's LGBTQ Pride Celebration. Being named a Grand Marshal of the St Pete Pride Parade is among the highest honors bestowed by the Tampa Bay LGBTQ community. Individuals and organizations nominated for Grand Marshal have made significant achievements for LGBTQ rights and have made considerable contributions to the LGBTQ community at large. All nominations were made by community members within Tampa Bay.

Kori has worked, professionally, as a Female Impersonator for 22 years, and has accomplished many goals in her career. She is also an avid Costume Designer, whose pieces have appeared in numerous Fashion Shows, local and national drag pageants, and even on national television. She moved to the Tampa Bay area 9 years ago, and was immediately drawn into this community. She quickly jumped in and became committed to being a face, a voice and an advocate for all things that involve or represent the people of our LGBTQ community. She participated in fundraisers that would benefit organizations like ASAP, St Pete Pride, FORGE (now known as TransAction FL) and the Metro Wellness and Community Center.

Kori Stevens

Kori was crowned Miss St Pete Pride 2010, and took community service to a whole new level. If there was an LGBTQ fundraiser anywhere in town, she was there to assist and/or donate to the cause. After crowning her successor, she became a Board Member of TransAction FL and St Pete Pride – where she helped to plan some of the wonderful programs that are now in place. She has served as the Entertainment Director for St Pete Pride for the past 5 years. She has been responsible for most of the entertainment for all fundraisers

that are held by the organization, including the annual Red and Green Party, Taste of Pride, and the Stonewall Reception. She also plans and coordinates the talent that performs during the Pride Celebration each summer. Kori has been a part of planning major fundraisers for St Pete Pride, ASAP, Metro Wellness and Community Center, March of Dimes, American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, All-Children’s Hospital, Petpals, and so much more. The Marine Corp Toys for Tots Program has been her pride and joy for 7 years running now. She has organized and hosted this fundraiser at several different venues over the years, and has collected over $20,000.00 worth of toys and raised over $10,000.00 in donations. Dedication to bringing the community together is what drives her to put on some of the events like the Toys for Tots Benefit, the St Pete Pride Pageants, her infamous Birthday Show, the PreThanksgiving Bash, the End of Summer Dance Party and the upcoming St Pete Pride Review Show. “It took 37 years to find a place that just felt right. And when I found it, I wanted to be a part of every bit of it, and for every bit of it to be a part of me”.

Ed Lally

Ed Lally has been a well-known LGBTQ activist in the Tampa Bay Area for the past 37 years. His activism in the community began in the mid-80’s when many of his friends were lost to the AIDS epidemic. Ed was one of the first board members of the Bay Area AIDS Consortium and later the Tampa Bay Aids Network (TAN) and headed up TAN’s annual giving programs and was instrumental in starting fund-raisers such as TAN’s annual White Party and Life Dance. Ed has served as vice president of The Tampa Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and has chaired their major annual fundraiser, The Launch Party, for the past 15 years. After a long-term career in banking Ed retired from Wachovia Bank to devote more time to LGBTQ causes. Ed began as a fundraising volunteer for Equality Florida in 1997 and became their Central Florida & Corporate Development Manager in 2009. He retired from Equality Florida in 2016 but has stayed on as a consultant for fundraising and advocacy work. Once recognized in Watermark Magazine

Michael Smith was born in 1981 in Pinellas County and has been a resident of Largo for nearly 11 years. In 2008, Michael came out wanting to be himself and make a difference in his community. In late 2010, he met his partner Eric and both are happily engaged together. He was elected to the Largo City Commission in November 2011 with 54% of the vote, unseating long-time incumbent Mary Gray Black, who was the leading advocate that lead to the removal of City Manager Steve Stanton. Stanton was fired shortly after revealing plans to undergo gender reassignment surgery and become Susan Stanton. In 2014,

Michael was re-elected with 65% of the vote. He has more than a decade of experience in local politics and has worked in the Pinellas Public Library system for the past 11 years. He has been a member and supporter of the: Human Rights Campaign, Tampa Bay Diversity Chamber of Commerce, It Gets Better Project, Pinellas Stonewall Democrats, Equality Florida and has marched in almost every Saint Pete Pride. This year, Michael will receive the Voice for Equality Award at the Equality Florida's St. Pete Gala.

Ed’s life’s mission has been to seek inclusion and full equality for the LGBTQ community and to make the Tampa Bay Area a better place for us to live and raise our families. A Louisville native, Ed attended University of Kentucky and University of Louisville and relocated to Tampa in 1979. He and his husband, Philip Dinkins will celebrate 40 years of love and companionship this year and were married in Toronto, Canada in 2003.

Michael Smith

Organizational Grand Marshal Project No Labels, a relatively new organization in the Tampa Bay LGBTQ+ community, is making a big impact with their focus on volunteerism, social events and fundraising activities for other non-profits. The organization has a focus on connecting and engaging people outside of the “bar scene.” Project No Labels is not about defining who people are by their orientation, skin color or beliefs, it’s about the person’s character and willingness to contribute to the greater community in a positive way.

as “The Constant Fundraiser,” Ed has raised over $2,000,000 for various LGBTQ organizations over the years. He has also been active in political fundraising campaigns for candidates that support LGBTQ rights and was a leading fundraiser in the Tampa Bay Area for the Hillary Clinton campaign. He is currently serving on the fundraising teams for St Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, Councilwoman Darden Rice and City Council candidate, Barclay Harless. Ed volunteers weekly at freeFall Theatre and was a big brother in Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Tampa Bay for several years and has served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Bigoted “religious freedom,” marriage equality and cultural acceptance are all explored with Del Shores’ trademark approach to using comedy and his much-beloved Sordid Lives characters to deal with these important current social issues and the very real process of accepting your family for who they are instead of who you want them to be. page 41

Come Pride, Come Changes:

When I was asked to write an opinion piece for the St. Pete Pride Guide, I initially said no. I knew what I wanted to talk about, but I was afraid to speak my thoughts. I know that sounds crazy coming from a person who is lucky enough to sit behind a microphone Monday through Friday to give my opinion on pop culture and people's relationships. But this was different. This topic was personal. People felt this issue in their bones. I was afraid to talk about the move of the St Pete Pride Parade. When I first saw the news, my initial thought was, "YAY!" I was super excited about how the parade would look visually against the backdrop of the water. Nothing says St. Pete like water! But I soon realized that my thinking was not what some in the LGBTQ+ community wanted. A few minutes after I shared the article on Facebook, a couple of people commented about their displeasure and dislike of Pride moving downtown. I'm not one to go back and forth with someone on social media, but I did as there was a spirited debate between two friends. We both felt very strongly about the side we were rooting for. I thought the debate would end there, on social media. Fast forward a few days later and there was a city council meeting to discuss the change. People were throwing accusations all around. And I'm not going to lie‌ it was rough. For a moment, it felt like our community was ripping itself apart. Thankfully, the Mayor and the Executive Director of Pride worked out the details on making the event work that satisfied everyone involved – whether it be directly or indirectly. I hope by the time the parade comes around we have all come together and celebrated our pride and how far we've come. If we look at our history of how we have fought for our rights in our country, it hasn't always been an easy, organized journey. To be honest, I didn't know about these struggles until watching the ABC mini-series, "When We Rise." It's a show that you need to rent if you missed it! Nonetheless, the series discusses how back in the early days, the gays and lesbians were two different factions fighting two separate battles against the establishment. Then

there were problems of inclusion from gay minorities who felt left out and unwelcome in the struggle to be recognized as humans. All through our journey, we have had to figure out how to include everyone in our fight for equality. I went through that long explanation to arrive at this: We all want what's best for our parade and our community, we just think we should go about it in different ways. It's OK that we do a gut check every few years to make sure Pride is serving our community in the safest and most efficient way possible. Our community is incredibly diverse. Pride brings us all together, whether we're Tampa or St. Pete, Christian or Muslim, white or brown, gay or straight, tops or bottoms! It's time for us to take our joy and zest for life Downtown because our community comes from so many different walks of life. Collectively we should all want to grow Pride so future generations know that it's safe to be open and proud, no matter where you are. We should want to give them a safe space to celebrate and feel free. The St Pete Pride Parade moving to a larger, diverse area is something that we should see as progress. For me, rather than seeing this move as a "corporate sellout," I saw something completely different. I saw the blood, sweat, and tears of the founders of St Pete Pride paying off. Isn't this what we have been fighting for: Equality and diversity everywhere? The ability to be free where ever we are? We will always remember where we came from, but we have to remind ourselves to be in the present and readjust when needed to grow and spread our message of love, acceptance, and unity. That is the symbolism behind the move to downtown for the parade. We are taking our message of love and spreading it down the streets of St. Pete. How beautiful will that look? Now let's lock arms and march down the streets of Downtown St. Pete to celebrate our Pride!

Thinking About Life Insurance? Five things same-sex couples should know In the past, many same-sex couples didn’t pursue life insurance due to a multitude of limitations. But thanks to the 2013 Windsor and 2015 Obergefell decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, more same-sex couples can take advantage of life insurance policies when coverage is needed based on their financial and estate planning needs. In fact, according to a recent study of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, approximately 42 percent of LGBT Americans now own a life insurance policy.1 For legally married same-sex couples, life insurance can be a simple way to

provide a surviving spouse with funds to help make up for lost income after his or her spouse’s death. That money might be important, too, for paying for children’s educations or paying off a mortgage. And due to antidiscrimination laws, there should be no underwriting differences for LGBT individuals compared to heterosexuals.2 However, like many aspects of financial planning in today’s evolving LGBT environment, there are several elements of the life insurance discussion that warrant special attention for same-sex couples, whether legally married or not.

1. GROUP POLICY CAVEATS Some U.S. employers offer employees the opportunity to buy life insurance on their spouse through a group policy.3 This is good news for legally married couples — as long as the group policy is covered by the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). Also, some employers extend group policies to domestic partnerships. Your employer’s Human Resources department should be able to give you details. 2. FEDERAL ESTATE TAX EXCLUSION AND UNLIMITED MARITAL DEDUCTION Due to the unlimited marital deduction, legally married same-sex couples can transfer an unlimited amount of assets between each other during their lifetime or upon death. In addition, these couples now have access to a total of $11 million in combined federal estate tax exclusions ($5.49 million per spouse in 2017) if they wish to transfer assets either outright or in trust for children or other beneficiaries. Since most couples’ assets, including a life insurance policy death benefit, would be less than that threshold, federal estate taxes may not be a concern. You should check with your tax advisor about your situation. The unlimited marital deduction benefits, however, are not available to civil unions or domestic partnerships, and state estate and gift tax rules may still be a consideration. 3. INSURABLE INTEREST Same-sex couples without a legal marriage certificate may still be able to get life insurance with their partners as beneficiaries if they can demonstrate an “insurable interest.” In general, an insurable interest means that one person would be

dealt a substantial financial blow if the other person dies.2 Insurable interest rules vary by state, but in many instances, if a couple owns a home together, that may be enough to prove insurable interest. 4. BUSINESS CONTINUITY If the members of a same-sex couple are business partners, life insurance can be obtained as a business succession and continuity planning tool. In this instance, life insurance could be used for a buysell agreement or to simply provide the liquidity needed to continue the business when a key person has died. For example: If business partner A dies, and business partner B has a policy on the life of partner A, the policy gives cash to partner B to pay the heirs of partner A for A’s percentage of the business. 5. LIFE INSURANCE TRUSTS For unmarried same-sex couples, there is also still the option used for years in estate planning for same-sex couples — creating an irrevocable life insurance trust.2 The insurable interest rules still apply. NOT SURE WHERE TO START? There are many different kinds of life insurance, and the details can be complex, especially as marriage laws change. So be sure to speak with your tax and legal advisors, insurance professional, and financial advisor about your unique financial needs and challenges. HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED? Every situation is different when it comes to how much life insurance you should have — and policy purchases should be based on specific needs. However, for a general rule of thumb, some experts estimate amount of coverage at somewhere between five and 10 times your current annual salary though this should generally be considered a starting point since other factors need to be considered, as well. 3

Exhibition on Display at The Florida Holocaust Museum:

Examining the Nazi Regime's Attempt to Eradicate

HOMOSEXUALITY T Story by Kristen Wright, The FHM’s Writer and Digital Content Manager

Please RSVP by calling 727.820.0100, extension 301. Free and open to the public. Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945 is currently on display at The FHM and runs through July 2, 2017. The Florida Holocaust Museum is located at 55 5th Street S, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. For additional Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945 exhibition information, please visit: https://www.thefhm.org/explore-2/exhibits/nazi-persecution-of-homosexuals. This United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's exhibitions program is supported in part by the lester Robbins and Shelia Johnson Robbins Traveling and Special Exhibitions Fund established in 1990.

he FHM is pleased to present the traveling exhibition Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945, on loan from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Presented locally by Wells Fargo, this exhibition examines the Nazi regime's attempt to eradicate homosexuality, which left thousands dead and shattered the lives of many more. Between 1933 and 1945, the Nazi German regime promoted racial health policies that sought to eliminate all sources of biological corruption to its dominant "Aryan" race. Among the groups persecuted as threats to the national health were Germany's homosexual men. Believing them to be carriers of a "degeneracy" that weakened society and hindered population growth, the Nazi state arrested and incarcerated in prisons and concentration camps tens of thousands of German men as a means of terrorizing them into social conformity. In conjunction with the exhibition Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals: 19331945, The FHM presents a special showing of the film Paragraph 175 on June 21, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum. Between 1933 and 1945, 100,000 men were arrested for homosexuality under Paragraph 175, the sodomy provision of the German penal code dating back to 1871. Some were imprisoned, others were sent to concentration camps. Of the latter, only about 4,000 survived. Five of them have now come forward to tell their stories for the first time in this powerful film.

3. 2017 marks a monumental milestone for The FHM as the Museum celebrates its 25th Anniversary. Throughout the year, The FHM is hosting numerous celebratory programs, events, and exhibitions, along with daily educational and outreach efforts. One of the largest Holocaust museums in the country, and one of only three Holocaust museums accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, The FHM honors the memory of millions of men, women and children who suffered of died in the Holocaust. The FHM is dedicated to teaching members of all races and cultures the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides. In addition, in September 2016, The FHM was chosen by USA TODAY as the #1 museum to visit in St. Petersburg – Clearwater. For the past twenty-five years, The FHM’s focus has been to tell the story of millions who suffered or died during the Holocaust through the personal testimonies, official documentation, photographs, and artifacts of individual narratives. The FHM is home to one of the few remaining railroad boxcars used by the Nazis to transport Jews and other prisoners to places like Auschwitz and Treblinka. Boxcar #113 069-5 now rests on original tracks from the Treblinka Killing Center as a silent tribute to those who perished in the Holocaust and is featured as part of the History, Heritage and Hope permanent exhibition. In addition to displaying traveling exhibitions from all around the world, the Museum creates its own original exhibitions. In 2015, The FHM created the first exhibition on the Civil Rights Movement in Tampa Bay called Beaches, Benches and Boycotts. This exhibition illuminated our region’s struggle

with racial equality, shared individual stories, and shined a light on the local leaders who changed our cities. Due to the successes of the Museum’s original exhibitions and educational programming, The FHM has received numerous awards and nominations. One of the most unique and special offerings at The FHM is the opportunity to hear a Holocaust Survivor share their story in person. Currently, The FHM welcomes 10,000 students each year to tour the Museum and talk with a Holocaust Survivor and enables over 150,000 people annually to learn about past genocides and human rights issues through engaging exhibitions, educational programs, and eye-witness accounts from Holocaust Survivors. In the coming months, The FHM invites the community to celebrate the Museum’s accomplishments by attending programs and changing exhibitions. As we continue to hear news stories regarding the hatred and intolerance throughout our communities, The FHM’s commitment to preventing future genocides by teaching the lessons of the past through testimonies, artifacts, and lessons of the past is more important than ever.

To learn more about The FHM’s educational and outreach programs, upcoming events and exhibitions, or to get involved, visit the Museum online at www.TheFHM.org. To stay connected online, follow The FHM on Facebook at facebook.com/TheFHM, Instagram @TheFHM, and Twitter @FLHolocaustMus.

s e h c a e B FOR EVERY MOOD Whether you’re looking for a lively game of beach volleyball or quiet wildlife viewing, you’ll find the perfect beach in the St. Pete/ Clearwater area. In St. Pete/Clearwater, each sunset over the Gulf of Mexico paints a scene as unique as the beaches that line its shores. The spectrum presents many possibilities for beach getaways near Tampa – from remote islands and laid-back beach towns to scenes saturated with sun-seekers. Which fits your mood?

HONEYMOON ISLAND STATE PARK Vibe: Lively. Honeymoon Island State Park balances undeveloped beaches with amenities, making it one of Florida’s most visited parks. What to Do: Stop in at the nature center, where you can learn about the history, flora and fauna of the island. Spy shorebirds and St. Joseph Sound from the observation deck.

CALADESI ISLAND STATE PARK Vibe: Serene and pristine. Caladesi is accessible only by public ferry or private boat. However, there’s a convenient marina and concession near the white sands and maritime hammocks. What to Do: Drift away from the popular areas. The tip of the island is good for shelling, and on the inland side, you might lock eyes with an osprey.

CLEARWATER BEACH Vibe: Social and active. Water sports, sand volleyball and the scenic, winding BeachWalk promenade keep things moving (the pedestrian path passes the ocean, seafood restaurants, surf shops and hotels). These are just a few of the reasons USA Today readers voted to name Clearwater Beach the "Best Beach Town in Florida" in 2013. And let's not forget the pristine white-sand beach itself, which routinely ranks as one of TripAdvisor's top five beaches in the U.S., taking the top spot in 2016 and coming in at No. 4 in 2017. What to Do: Sunsets at Pier 60. The nightly event features crafters, buskers and live music at Pier 60 at Clearwater Beach.

SUNSET BEACH (THE GAY BEACH) Vibe: Backyard party. The mood comes in part because Sunset Beach is separated from the mainland on its own peninsula south of Treasure Island. What to Do: Choose any establishment in the small cluster of rustic outdoor bars and restaurants for a beer, grouper sandwich and live music just a step from the sand.

PASS-A-GRILLE BEACH Courtesy: Visit St Pete/Clearwater and the City of St Pete

Vibe: Low-key. You won’t find large crowds or high-rises here (Pass-aGrille's building height restrictions help retain its Old-Florida flavor). What to Do: Walk through the Eighth Avenue Historic District to the sea grass-sheltered beach and out to the island’s tip, where the Intracoastal and Gulf surround you with water.

Tiara Tartines recipe by Chef Jeffrey Jew

1 ea. crusty ciabatta, sliced olive oil

salt / pepper

1 cup basil pesto

10 ea. slices of prosciutto ½ cup shaved parmesan 1 cup arugula

Tea Sandwiches Recipe by Chef Jeffrey Jew

1 loaf white or wheat bread 1 cup mayo

2 ea. avocado, ripe 1 bag spinach

1lb sliced turkey breast

Avocado mayo: mash the avocados in a bowl with the mayo and mix well or put all in a food processor or blender and pulse until mixed. 1 cup mustard

10 slices swiss cheese 1lb sliced ham

1 ea. Head of butter lettuce

Spread the respective condiment on one side of two pieces of bread. Then put a thin layer of the remaining ingredients in the order they are listed. For example: bread then mustard then one piece swiss cheese, one slice ham, one piece butter lettuce and then top with the other piece of bread. Continue this with half the loaf and the other half of the loaf use for the turkey sandwich. Cut

Loud & Proud Punch Recipe by Carolyn Tsourakis

1 750 ml bottle chilled sparkling wine 4 cups of vodka

1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice

1-2 cups simple syrup (depending on taste)

4 dollops of sorbet (use any flavor you prefer) 6-8 thin slices of appropriate fruit

the crust off on all four sides as square as possible, then make two cuts from corner to corner until you have four equal triangle tea sandwiches. Cut all the sandwiches and then place on a platter. Easy way to get those carbs!

Brush or drizzle olive oil on both sides of the sliced ciabatta and season with salt and pepper. Grill or toast in a 300-degree oven until golden brown. Spread a layer of pesto on one side of the toasted bread. Lay one slice of prosciutto on top of pesto. Continue this until you have used all the bread. Line these up on a platter and garnish

with parmesan and arugula. Drizzle with olive oil and serve. You can mix this up with other ingredients – hummus and grilled artichokes, smoked salmon and herbed cream cheese or tuna and cannellini beans. It’s an easy and quick snack you can make ahead of time so you can turn that oven off before the party starts!

In a large punch bowl, combine wine, vodka, lemon juice and simple syrup. Adjust levels depending on personal taste. Add sorbet & slices. Let stand 10 minutes to cool down. Serve in individual glasses with ice if preferred. The great thing about this recipe is its flexibility! Use assorted sorbets and fruits to create a rainbow display or do two, three or more punches to give your guests a colorful assortment of choices. page 73
