CHAPTER ONE 2
COMMODORE’S LOG
A
s I write my first Commodore’s Log, I reflect on the honor of serving the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. I began my life as a sailor by cruising with my parents as a young child. At age nine, I began racing for The St. Petersburg Yacht Club and owe a great deal to our Club for providing me with a platform to learn many great lessons on and off the water. “The mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.” It has been because of extraordinary leaders that we continue this mission today. I owe a great debt of gratitude to Past Commodores Klingel, Byrne, and Blacker for their leadership, patience, humor, and kindness as I began my service to the Club as a Flag Officer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many changes have occurred at our Club. We are committed to keeping our members, guests and employees safe. Among the policies we have instituted, we amended our bylaws to allow for expanded voting in our recent election. I wish to thank the many qualified members who volunteered to run for the Board of Directors in our recent election. They were all excellent candidates and I regret they could not all be elected. It is my pleasure to announce and congratulate the newly elected members of the Board:
2020-2021 BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Dr. Jody Abrams Fred Bickley, Jr. Grant Dumas Christopher Fraser Frank Fraze Michael Funsch Mary Hacker
2020-2021 FLAG OFFICERS: Commodore: Dr. David Mendelblatt Vice Commodore: William “Bill” Waters
Veronica Hickey Jeannie O’ Grady George Pennington Bert Rachael Chad Shakespeare Bill Waters, II PC Michael Blacker
Rear Commodore: Brian Smith Treasurer: Scott Boyle
Club Secretary: Wendy Reuss-Stocke
This past year has been an interesting one. I would like to thank the management and employees for providing us with a safe place to enjoy each other’s company. There are many members who only leave their house to come to our Club, not feeling safe in any other establishments. And this is for good reason: Our COVID Control Committee has worked hard to make recommendations which have been adopted as Club policy. We have made many difficult decisions, including cancelling the Commodore’s Ball this year and closing the Sailing Center for two weeks in June. But these decisions and the leadership of our Club have put us in good standing as we look forward to less challenging times. On the water, our Committee Chairs, member volunteers and staff, have made it possible to run safe regattas. We are using video conference for skippers meetings, enforcing safe distancing and mask use, among many other strategies. The competitors have enjoyed the results of our efforts and given us high marks for the events we are running. As we progress into our peak boating season, we are looking forward to executing our planned regatta calendar as much as possible. Our Club Championship held on October 3 was a great success. George Pennington and his team of volunteers, along with Regatta Chairman, Jody Abrams, helped J70 enthusiasts enjoy an excellent day on the water. Congratulations to Nic Baird and his team for winning the event. We also plan to see our cruising fleet enjoy the great weather we have and to welcome visitors from other clubs. Our Dock-Masters are doing an excellent job accommodating boaters. The Pass-a-Grille dock replacement is complete. Please consider joining us on the water for the Blessing of the Fleet on November 1st at the downtown Clubhouse Marina. We have been fortunate to have many new members join our Club during the pandemic. I would like to welcome them aboard, and I hope they enjoy the Club! The placement of a mural on the west-facing wall of the Sailing Center, is being planned in conjunction with the St. Pete Arts Alliance SHINE Festival. We will also begin hosting Kite-Foil regattas. This exciting Olympic Class of racing will keep SPYC on the cutting edge of regatta management. Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank Commodore Michael Blacker and his wife, Jacqueline, for their friendship and leadership during this last year. I wish them and their family happiness and know they will enjoy all the time they are NOT now required to spend on Club business. Happy Thanksgiving

“I
would like to thank the Committee Chairmen, who served on the Executive Committee. Their job, to do the “heavy lifting” of our club’s business, often occurs unnoticed. This year many of them were asked to develop policies which would allow our members to enjoy Club activities in a safe environment. They were able to rapidly adapt and evolve their schedules and protocols to serve the membership.” “It has been a great pleasure serving as Chairman of the Executive Committee. I look forward to continuing to work with these members in the future.” Respectfully, David Mendelblatt, Commodore

RV LAND CRUISERS by Angela Kowalik, President
W
e live in a Ken & Corrine St. Jean at Key Palms on Key Largo beautiful state where many people want to visit. What better way to see Florida than in your own RV! In September, Ken & Corrine St. Jean did just that, taking a trip down south to the Florida Keys. They started and ended their trip by glamping at some of the great “fancy” resorts in Naples. While in the Keys, they had a crocodile “visitor” at a nearby site while staying at John Pennycamp Coral Reef State Park. Then on to Grassy Key and Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon, where they witnessed several manatees tousling about in the water…what a sight! In between all their various Keys stops, the St. Jean’s took off in their Jeep for a few day trips such as to Flamingo City in the Everglades, and to Key West for some beverages at the Conch Republic. And finally, staying at Key Palms on Key Largo where they had a beautiful waterfront site. This is why people love Florida!
RV Essentials – a tow vehicle, or “toad” as they say since it goes where it’s towed. You might as well get those bicycles too! Once you set up camp, you can venture around the area for some pedal power exercise, or some sight-seeing (or groceries). Special Tribute - to Gary Quilla, who passed away on September 23rd. Gary was the initial inspiration for this group, now known as the RV Land Cruisers. Gary & Pat put many miles on their RV, and had many stories to tell of their trips and experiences, some of which are now legendary in our group. We will miss you Gary! Pat & Gary Quilla Our meetings will resume sometime in the near future. Meanwhile, we keep on truckin’ with our RVs. To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at koalafam@tampabay.rr.com
Looking forward to seeing you around the next bend… SMOOTH SAILING | NOVEMBER 2020
