Notice of Annual Meeting & Board of Directors Election
CHAPTER TEN 2
COMMODORE’S LOG
I
hope this chapter of the Commodore’s Log finds you safe and healthy. COVID-19 is still dictating our activities at home and at the Club and will continue to do so for the months ahead. The good news is that from a regulatory perspective the Club has reached a bit of a steady state. The Federal, State, and local regulations are no longer changing every day. This has allowed us to refine and improve the way we are operating at the Club as opposed to continually making wholesale changes. In this chapter I will address some of the changes you will see in the coming months. But first, I would like to give you an update on the Club’s financial status. The Club’s financial status is very good. Our financial reports are now complete for the first ten months of the fiscal year (October – July). Remember that our Club is a not for profit business, so our goal is not to make large profits, it is to provide quality service and a great member experience. Our revenues are obviously down for the year, but our net income is ahead of budget and our cash position continues to be strong. This occurs by controlling expenses. The leaders of our Club have had to make many decisions, to adjust to this pandemic, and they are working. The other thing that we have to continue to do is match service supply with member demand. The extended days at the Tiki Hut, extending Heritage Lounge dining into the Regatta room and having the alternative dining experience of the Commodore Room seems to be the right combination for now. I would like to thank our General Manager and his team and my fellow Flag Officers for making all the decisions required to keep our Club in the strong financial position that it is in. Here are some of the changes you will see in the coming months, as our Board of Directors candidates are set and the
Annual Meeting and Board of Directors election will take place on October 13th. Due to the challenges that COVID-19 brings I wanted to do everything possible to allow our members to vote and participate in the annual meeting. The Board of Directors has recently passed a motion that amends the By-Laws regarding voting. This year, up to two weeks prior to the election you will be able to stop by the Club and cast your ballot and you no longer have to state that you will be out of town on election day. You can also vote without even going to the Club. You can request a mail in ballot and simply vote by mail. Look for the details in the Saturday morning e-Blasts. The annual meeting will also be different this year. You can come to the Ballroom as usual and participate in the annual meeting. We will of course have the chairs setup at the proper social distance and require face coverings. You will also have the option of LIVE streaming the annual meeting. This means that you can watch the annual meeting on a computer from the comfort of your home. Further details to come. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the CDC’s discouragement of all gatherings, I have canceled the Commodore’s Ball for this year. We have upheld every SPYC tradition that we could, but I do not think this is the right time to be holding a large event like the Commodore’s Ball. The safety of our members come first. We will have plenty of time to gather and have fun once we get past this pandemic. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay positive.
Commodore Michael Blacker
The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

he “Dog Days of Summer” will have passed, as well as the end of the summer Labor Day Holiday, by the time you receive this newsletter. This summer we had some challenges within our sailing community to host and attend events. Given that more free time was available I ventured out to our Beach Club in Pass-a-Grille. The pool was installed in July last year and many of our members have found it to be quite the gem. Did you know that members can use the umbrella, chairs, and table beach cart to wheel out to the beach...complimentary for members to use! What a great set up! The PAG pool opens at 11:00 am, and the clubhouse opens
for service at 11:30 am, it is a good opportunity to get in some beach, pool, and lunch all in one inviting location. While there, it was with great pride, I saw social distancing guidelines being followed while members and guests continued to enjoy the pool, patio, and club. The huge umbrellas over the pool and furniture added much needed shade. If you’ve not been there, taking a drive to our Beach Club is well worth it! Kudos to the Beach Club staff for offering a safe, clean, and fun environment this summer.

wo of our members, Bill Tinsley & Bob Kline, “escaped” our summer heat and humidity to their mountain homes in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains near Waynesville & Maggie Valley, and met up with member Norm Naughton who travelled up there with spouse Vicki in their Airstream RV. Bill, Bob, & Norm cruised some of the best riding roads in the United States on their BMW, Indian, and Harley bikes respectively including the world famous Tail Of The Dragon. Vers are known to “chase” the weather, and that’s why some head to the hills and locations beyond for more attractive temperatures. We found this was a “cool” way to quarantine and pick up a few more states in our travel map. Travel Map
Everyone wears a mask!
Traveling around the Smokies this summer we found a refreshing 48 degrees at the top of Clingman’s Dome. We were in the clouds! The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is so close to us. What a wondrous diversity of life in the forest that straddles between North Carolina and Tennessee. Roaming around some of the small towns in these nearby states, we found “everyone” was wearing masks!
Did you know you could get a Passport for Your National Parks? It’s one of those bucket list items and a great way to see and experience some of our beautiful nation and America’s natural treasures. Oh, and it’s fun for kids too!
Chairs that “rock”!
RV Essentials (things you didn’t realize you needed, but just have to have) – some comfortable chairs. And not just any chairs, but these chairs “rock”!

he LBC Board of Directors planned the 2020 – 2021 program season with the restrictions of the pandemic in mind. Program topics have been reconsidered and revamped in an attempt to make presentations work for faceto-face as well as virtual settings. We have a licensed Zoom Pro account to help facilitate this need and a Webcam to yield 90-degree coverage while maintaining high video resolution. This means, for example, that we can have our November fashion show as usual with full outfits on display, not just head shots. Zoom attendees will have a secret code to receive free shipping on all online orders!
entry – it’s that easy. “Zoomee’s” will even have a chance to win that bottle of wine! Mah Jongg is very popular with the LBC – we continue to play every Monday. A water aerobics class in the new PAG pool started in August as well as the Ladies Lair – a daytime virtual book group. Think of it – you can have water aerobics in the morning, have lunch and then play Mah Jongg in the afternoon!!
Zoom is a great tool – it’s free and easy to download. Members who reserve a Zoom seat will be sent a link to click for meetings
If you haven’t paid your dues yet, now is the time. Contact Treasurer, Maryette Miller (maryette06@tampabay.rr.com) or Cheryl Lanfear (mclanfear@yahoo.com). Dues are just $30.00 and worth every penny!!

Loren Hoffman, an avid sailor and SPYC member, will narrate a slideshow of his travels to Nepal. At about 27 N Latitude (Kathmandu), in 80 miles the terrain goes from sea level on the border with India up to reach the world’s highest peaks bordering Tibet; including Mt. Everest.
The Passport Club is pleased to sponsor an exciting presentation for all SPYC members! A Himalayan Odyssey: Travel Adventures in Nepal Presented by SPYC member, Loren Hoffman, in person at the downtown clubhouse.
Thursday, November 5th Social Time: 5:00 pm Presentation: 5:30 pm $15++/per person
*Plated Hors d’oeuvres will be available*
The presentation will capture the country’s cultures and (like Edmund Hillary and members of the 1953 Everest expedition) traverse up the deepest valleys in the world. This event will be a combination of “in-person” attendance at the Club and virtually for those who are out of town or quarantining. Please RSVP in either case if you wish to attend. To attend in person: RSVP online at www.spyc.org or call 727-892-6882 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To attend virtually via Zoom: RSVP to patsywarmack@tampabay.rr.com to receive Zoom meeting details (Zoom event is complimentary to attend) Guests and reciprocal members are now allowed at the Club.
The mission of the Passport Club is to have fun and share travel experiences, plans, and bucket lists for domestic & international travels; by air, land, sea, or just kicking back and letting others take the wheel! (Guests welcome ~ food & beverage will be billed to member account.)

ur first Grand Marshall is a guy known as Pull. John Hanner always said “pull” to see the target trajectory before attempting a shot. For some shooters that might be considered extra help. The Grand Marshall manages the activities of the Wing Shooters. It was under Pull’s two years of leadership that our traditions were established. A heavy spring style clay thrower is the Marshall’s symbol of authority. We instituted monthly meetings, planned shoots, shot gun shell deals, an annual gift, organized hunts, and our holiday season dinner. Most significantly, we have no rules. This later point remains sacred to all Wing Shooters. It describes the nature of our club. We are rowdy. We are also and somewhat cordial at the same time. If you attend a

n August 8th, the Salty Sister Skippers tested the prospective incoming class of 2020 and all passed with flying colors. Debbie Lang, Patricia Burrows, Eleanor Koelsch, Mik Severini, and Nona Pucciariello will be back in the fall to begin their Salty Sister Education. Thanks to Janet Walker, Jennifer Parramore, Els Wiemken, Sherry Welch, and Trisha Birkenstock for taking the “newbies” out in Ideals for their sailing test. Also, thanks to Kathy Ahern for letting them do their swim test at her home. The Salties are looking forward to getting back in the boats this fall and Co-Captain Els Weimken started with two weeks of Power Boat training at the end of August. SEPTEMBER 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING

Each day began with a “task” with anything from 10,000 daily steps, eating a healthy meal, contacting fellow Kathy Ahern studying Bi-Laws Salties, or just some miscellaneous fun. Sending photos and funny stories were among the daily responses and, of course, BINGOs were called when their cards filled up. Some of the participates include: Marti Cochran, Joanne Simmons, Diane Fowler, Barbara Arnold, Katie Rodgers, JoAnn Chamberlain (even with a broke foot), Carol Hansen, Ellen Pavone, Martha Monfried, Kathy Ahern, Els Weimken, Anna Olecka, Gina Bowden-Pierce, and Kristina Thyrre.

ur July 20th outing was at Cove Cay Golf Club, a lovely hidden gem of a golf course tucked away on Tampa Bay on the way to Clearwater. Again, we had single players to a cart, which had been sanitized, and we adhered to social distancing while enjoying the fresh air on a golf course. When inside the clubhouse we donned our masks. We mention this to advise anyone who wants to join our group that we respect these measures to ensure our safety. After a sunny day we enjoyed a lunch included in our dues for the Golf Group which is a nominal $50 a year and helps to sustain our festivities.

lthough the Broad Reachers did not sail as a group during July and August, Captain Gwen Mann and Co-Captain (Racing) Charl Hadfield have been busy planning for the months of fall sailing at the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse with a full calendar of events for the year. In addition to what we hope will be an active year of racing and fun sailing, we have scheduled the Commodore Lucas Regatta for October 9, 2020. This annual event features competitors from other Florida Women’s Sailing Association (FWSA) clubs in a series of five races, typically with competitors returning to the docks and switching boats in between races. While the format could change this year, we expect to have the usual fierce competition for the treasured Commodore Lucas Cup.
Pram Sailing Race Committee
We are excited that the year 2021 will be the 50th year of Broad Reacher sailing at Sail to Hotel Zamora Pass-a-Grille. Joanne Simmons and Marti Cochran co-chair the committee formed to plan 50th Anniversary activities. We invite other Broad Reachers — especially members from earlier years — to join the committee and to offer ideas on our anticipated year-long celebration. The Broad Reachers want to welcome two new members; Lori Hodges and Juliette Clark!! The Broad Reachers meet each Saturday morning at the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse for racing and fun sailing.
