CHAPTER THREE 2
COMMODORE’S LOG D
ear SPYC Members, Welcome to February, the shortest month. I hope you and yours are doing well. I would like to begin this Commodore’s Log by thanking our courteous and professional dockmasters for helping my family to have some excellent boat trips recently. We have taken daytrips between our Downtown and Pass-a-Grille Clubhouses. This is a beautiful time of year to make the trip to the Beach Club. I want everyone to know what great resource we have. In case you haven’t heard, the 36th America’s Cup will begin in March. The regatta will be held in Auckland, NZ. The World’s best sailors will compete for the ultimate prize in our sport. The America’s Cup has always pushed our sport to develop and hone new technology. The materials and development that come from the America’s Cup engineering teams have allowed new and exciting boats to evolve. As a result, foiling classes are now the “tip of the spear” that is our sport. No small boats are faster, more exciting or more extreme than foil boards powered by kites. Foil kite racing will be an Olympic sport in 2024. SPYC recently hosted our second Foil Kite Regatta. We are very proud to be on the cutting edge of sailing by hosting these events. Please consider attending one of our regattas as a volunteer or spectator. You will be entertained! Florida is now at the peak of our season for visitors on vacation and competitors on the southern sailing circuit. The number of guests we have at our Club is on the rise. I am very proud of the way we treat our guests. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we made a decision that we would implement a strong safety protocol to reduce the risk of spreading infection. As result, we are able to treat reciprocal guests the way we wish our own members to be treated when we travel. We have a busy month planned on and off the water. Please be advised that some regattas scheduled for this year were cancelled and postponed due to COVID-19. Members wishing to get up to date regatta info should visit www.spyc.org/regattas. Some upcoming regattas still on this year’s schedule include: NOOD Regatta 2021

These classes take place at both the downtown and Pass-a-Grille clubhouses and are completely complimentary - for members only. Finally, I’d like to congratulate our 2020 Employee of the Year, Glen Dorsey, and our 2020 Employee of the Year Runner-Up, Delora Corteau! As you know, all our employees are superb. But these staff members have gone above and beyond expectations to take care of our needs and make us feel at home at SPYC. We thank them for their service, especially during these difficult times. Please make sure to congratulate them and to thank all our staff for what they do on a daily basis. Respectfully,
Commodore David Mendelblatt

MEET SPYC’S NEW DIRECTOR OF MEMBER RELATIONS
D
ear SPYC Members,
I was ten years old the first time I stepped inside the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. I can still remember the sense of awe I felt as I read the engravings on the trophies and began to understand the longstanding traditions upon which this club is built. As a young SPYC sailor, I quickly grew to love the sport and appreciated the opportunities the Club provided me as I competed around the world in opti’s, lasers, 420’s and keelboats. Sailing took me to the College of Charleston, where I represented the Cougars in the College Sailing National Championship all four years while earning degrees in Business Administration and Hospitality & Tourism. I’ve spent the last eight years working on the Club’s waterfront as a youth sailing coach and more recently, the Club’s Waterfront Programs Coordinator. This Club has given me so much over the years, and I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to give back as the new Director of Member Relations. I’m looking forward to how I can help provide a better member experience for all. Respectfully, Corey Hall Director of Member Relations To refer a member or request an application for someone you know, contact (727) 892-6888 or membership@spyc.org.

YACHTING History Revealed INFORMATION COMMITTEE
A
“History Revealed” Communication Strategy is being launched. The primary focus is historical events and contributions of our members and Club in the Yachting, Powerboat, and Marine Industry. The secondary focus is on more present-day contribution. Members of this newly formed committee under Yachting Information may be reaching out to you to share your story. We encourage you to participate as we have many outstanding members that have a legacy that we are proud to share and memorialize. • Speaker Series – Racing Sailors, Cruisers, Race Committee, Jr. Sailors, Power Boaters, Past Commodores and Yacht Builders. (Video with topics, talking points and paired with like-minded members)
• • •
Legacy Series – Families of SPYC Fun Facts – Look for these in Smooth Sailing. Post Covid19 – Social Programs – Lunch and Learns with various Clubs Within the Club.
The Yachting Recognition Awards Social Program for 2019 was cancelled due to Covid-19. The YRA Committee is making plans to recognize the outstanding achievements of our Yachtsmen and Yachtswomen of 2020. The intent is to offer a visual presentation that can be viewed by the entire SPYC Membership. Look for updates and links as we plan the release in Q2 2021.
How many times have you entered the Club through the North entrance and walked by a funny looking thing leaning against the wall—or even noticed the funny looking thing leaning against the wall? What is it? The mystery has been revealed. Please read on! This is called a Gangway Board. Sets of these boards were usually amidships and were of many different designs and sometimes combinations of materials. Many of the very old “boards” were carved out of wood. The one at the Club entrance is of solid bronze, quite decorative, and comes from a Coast Guard vessel probably in service during the Spanish–American War [circa 1898]. Since Tampa was picked as the staging area for Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders as well as tens of thousands of American troops on their way to Cuba, it is most likely the vessel from which this bronze came sailed the waters of the West Coast of Florida and Greater Tampa Bay. JR. SAILING
UPDATE by Todd Fedyszyn
T
he SPYC Junior Racing Team was well represented over the December Holidays with 23 sailors travelling to Fort Lauderdale to compete in the 2020 Lauderbowl Regatta. The event was held in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of LYC and saw 15-25 knots of breeze and 5-9 seas. Our SPYC team did a great job of handling some of the most difficult conditions they will likely ever see in the youth sailing careers.
In the Opti RWB Fleet John Hartney sailed a great regatta finishing in 18th overall and qualifying for the gold fleet. Also qualifying for the gold fleet were Rosie Simpson and Jan Mistak. Also competing were Adam and Reid Mendelblatt, Reece and Ryder Ellis, Maija and Anna Andert, Jackson Lee, Leah Abrams, Finn Cox, Jad Aberdrabbo, Gloria Privis, Chris Shaffer, and Sophia Fuller.
In the Laser Fleet SPYC was led by Guthrie Braun who finished 5th overall in the highly competitive Radial Fleet. Also competing in the Laser were Ethan Danielson, Kate Danielson, Sidney Moyer, Callen Burnett, and Dorothy Mendelblatt.
The SPYC Junior Racing Team has a busy schedule to start 2021 with many midwinter events all over the state of Florida. Keep a lookout on the Junior Team’s Facebook and Instagram page for regular updates and photos!

KENNY RUSSELL
GLEN DORSEY
2020 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
2020 EOTY RUNNER-UP
Congratulations to Kenny Russell for being voted January’s Employee of the Month! Kenny started in August of 2019 as Casual Labor, and his work ethic proved to be invaluable, and we were lucky to have him become a part of the Pass-a-Grille team in January of 2020. Kenny is a dedicated and loyal employee who is always willing to help his coworkers with whatever they need. He may not be well known to our members because he works in the back of the house, keeping the kitchen and utensils clean, but the employees at PAG greatly appreciate his daily efforts. Congratulations, Kenny, on a job well done!!
We would like to Congratulate Glen Dorsey, SPYC’s 2020 Employee of the Year! Glen has truly shown that he will excel in his hospitality career by learning as much as he can during his tenure with us – he was hired in the Banquet Department, but during this last year has worked in Maintenance, the Tiki Hut, the Sailing Center, and the Heritage Lounge. Glen exemplifies teamwork – he is always willing to help out, has a positive attitude, and a friendly smile (that unfortunately is currently hidden behind a mask). We have many spectacular employees, but Glen’s overall team spirit and recognition from his peers earned him the title of Employee of the Year for 2020!
Congratulations to Delora Croteau, SPYC’s 2020 Runner-up for Employee of the Year! Delora has been a part of the Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club for 12 years, always going above and beyond, working late, and helping out by taking extra shifts when needed. She is always upbeat with a friendly smile, greeting members, assisting her fellow employees, and is constantly mentioned in comment cards for her great service and knowledge. Thank you, Delora, for all that you do! You are a true asset to the Pass-a-Grille Club and we are proud to honor you with this award.
JANUARY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Anchor’s Aweigh with Anne & Andy! ~ January Winner: Julie Shields Julie is the lucky winner of the January Anchor’s Aweigh game/raffle, spotting all seven (7) of the Anne & Andy images. To recap, they were spotted on pages: Front cover, 4,11,14,16,18 & 25. Julie snagged $100 in food & beverage gift certificates she can use while dining at the Club!

RV LAND CRUISERS
Friend at Yellowstone

n order to be COVID safe, we’ve all had to alter how we work and how we play. Like everyone, the Metro The Metro’s - Nick, Angela, and Elizabeth family (Nick, Angela, and daughter Eileen) initially stayed home to weather the virus, but finally said, “We can’t keep inside.” Luckily, BABs came to the rescue! “Who is BABs?” BABs (BigAs*-Bus) is their 2015, 37AP Tiffin Allegro Bus.
Moochdocking BABs
So in late July after a negative COVID test, they loaded the bus and headed west to Driggs, ID where dear friends allowed them to “moochdock” in their driveway. Driggs is part of the very popular Jackson Hole area: same Teton mountains, but in Idaho instead of Wyoming. They spent three luxurious months hiking, kayaking, and breathing fresh mountain air as they explored national parks, the affluent cowboy town of Jackson, WY and the fabulous Teton Village ski resort. Angela Metro describes the trip as life-changing, sharing a few highlights:
• Glacier National Park Glacier Views scenery is absolutely jawdropping! The long-range views of the “Going to the Sun Road” are truly inspirational. They stayed at Montana Basecamp in Kallispel, MT, a fabulous RV park about 45 minutes from the entrance to Glacier. • Yellowstone National Park Elk friend at Yellowstone was simply extraordinary! Stunningly beautiful scenery and remarkable animal sightings (moose, elk, wolves, bears, etc.). They stayed at Sawtelle Mountain Resort about 15 minutes from the West Yellowstone entrance. Although a bit rugged, it serve their needs perfectly. • Teton National Forest – The tetons out our backyard again, magnificently beautiful – was in their “backyard” from the home base in Driggs. They spent many weekends enjoying hiking and dramatic views. Most of the RVers in our group are dealing with COVID in a similar way, by exploring our beautiful land in the safety and comfort of their own RV. Thanks to the Metro family for sharing their adventure out west—to the land where impressive vistas, super fun kayaking and gorgeous hiking trails outnumbered people. They feel very lucky, as we all do, to have an RV allowing them to enjoy life while staying safe!

n December 30, 2020, a group of motorcyclists from the 20-10 Chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Club, along with other Veteran organizations, participated in an Unclaimed Veteran Escort ride for three area veterans from both Haley and Bay Pines VA Hospitals. Included in the escort of approximately 50 riders were SPYC Riders Club members Norm Naughton and Al Canino. The opportunity for the SPYC members to participate came at the invitation of Tim Gresset, an
active member in the CVMC Chapter. The escort began at the James A. Haley VA and ended at Bushnell National Cemetery, where a service was held. he Broad Reachers mourn the loss of a wonderful gentleman and supporter of the club, John Spencer Lucas III, who passed away December 14, 2020 at age 70, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Spencer was the son of former Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club Commodore John S. Lucas, Jr., who in 1972 presented to the Broad Reachers the Commodore Lucas Trophy; “to promote yacht racing between women’s sailing groups in the Tampa Bay Area and to encourage proficiency in seamanship, sportsman-like conduct, and outstanding proficiency in the sport.” For 47 years, only interrupted this past fall by the pandemic, the Broad Reachers have hosted an annual competition among member clubs of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association, with the coveted Lucas Cup going to the winning sailor.

Spencer, who shared his father’s enthusiasm for women’s sailing, was always there to award the Lucas Cup trophy, as he was when the Broad Reachers hosted the annual Nancy Lucas Regatta, a competition among sailors from the Broad Reachers and Salty Sisters and named after his mother, Nancy Lucas. We will deeply miss Spencer, and we offer our condolences to his wife of almost 49 years, Alice, and to his three children and seven grandchildren. The Broad Reachers meet each Saturday morning at the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse for racing and fun sailing. Maggie Mug Practice
by Carol Hansen
O
ur Annual Holiday Party was held on December 16, 2020 where the Salty Sisters enjoyed a festive morning, some in person and some via ZOOM. Captain Els Weimken recapped the unusual year of 2020 and then introduced the Class of 2019, a resilient group of women who managed to produce their skit virtually! They will now be known as the “8 Mates.” The skit presented on YouTube was presented by Suzanne Boohar, Kate Clardy, Barbara Goodman, Carin Korros, Martha Monfried, Anna Olecka, Ilene Robeck and Micki Siviter. The first Wednesday of January was a practice day for the “Maggie Mug”, a regatta created in 1958. Thirty Salties turned out on a chilly morning for RC, safety, and sailing. Our six teams
were able to get in general sailing time, with one full race plus a half practice race. It was a good launch for the 2021 sailing season. The actual “Maggie Mug” regatta series will consist of four or more races. Four races are required and if five are scored, the boats will get one of their choice removed from their team’s score. Lunch is still being enjoyed outdoors in the park after sailing and many Salties order from the club or bring their own. FWSA NEWS: January began a 4-part series for any FWSA member interested, presented by Dave Perry. The courses included: 2021-2024 Rule Changes, Creating Success in Your Starts, Creating Success on Your Beats, Reaches and Runs, and Creating Success at Your Mark Roundings & the Finish Line. t’s either a “true pair” or “on report” station. This has to do with shooting sporting clays, one of the activities of the Wing Shooters. At each station two clay targets are launched. If it’s an on report station, the first clay target is launched and when the shooter fires, the second target is launched. At a true pair station both targets are launched at the same time. Two targets at once are more difficult, you need to focus on one target, shoot and then quickly find and shoot the second target. Picking the wrong target to shoot first is not good. By the time you find to the second target, it might be out of range, up in the sun, flown into the trees, disappeared into the bushes, or has already hit the ground. On your score card, that’s a miss.
One guy in our group frequently likes to shoot true pairs even when the station is set up as on report. It’s a subtle challenge to the rest of the group. He claims he does better if he hurries each shot and therefore doesn’t over think things. You either follow suit or be perceived as a wimp. That guy, pictured above, is John Kollar, also known as True Pair.
