COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, Welcome to April and all the activities for you at the Yacht Club! For those who recently stopped by, likely you noticed that the Club has been busy and there is definitely a happy and welcoming feeling around. I encourage all of you, especially new members, to visit and participate in the activities. This month marks the 51st Anniversary of the Regata del Sol al Sol Race to Mexico. Join us April 21st for the "Regata del Sol al Sol Street Party & Low Country Boil". April 22nd is the start of the race with awards ceremony taking place in Mexico on April 29th. We wish all the sailors participating in this race fair winds, good health, and Godspeed. Please join me in congratulating our members who were selected and recognized during the Yachting Recognition Awards ceremony on March 29th! This very important event is where these folks were recognized for their outstanding and long-time work and dedication to the sport of yachting. Our Club is highly recognized world-wide as one of the most prestigious yacht clubs, and recognized in this manor due to efforts made by the people receiving those awards. Check the list and congratulate them. The Entertainment Committee has come up with some very fun events for you; including a very fun Friends & Family Feud Game on May 21st, and a new event - Floral Arranging Workshop. Check "Club Events" in this issue to find out more!

Reservations are required if you are planning to have Easter Sunday Dinner in the Grille 1909. Dinner reservations can be made online at www.spyc.org, or call (727) 822-3873. The Downtown Easter Sunday Brunch Buffet is sold out. The waters in Tampa Bay and the gulf are warming up, but even with the cooler water and unpredictable winds, the sailing activities have been very strong with many important racing events. The Thistle Midwinters East Regatta, with over 30 boats, celebrated its 65th anniversary last month. Most competitors made the annual trip from around the country. The Pennington Cup, scheduled for March 12th from our PAG location, was moved to our downtown marina due to very high winds and seas. It was held March 27th, following the Pussers’ Rum Cup/Ted Irwin Memorial Regatta on the 26th. Both were very exciting events in Tampa Bay. Finally, later this month Mary and I will be attending the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC) Weekend in Fernandina Beach, meeting with other FCYC officers and members. Note that SPYC was the creator of the original 13 club FCYC, giving you the club reciprocity we all enjoy as we cruise the Florida waters. I will report my meeting in our next issue of Smooth Sailing. In the meantime, enjoy your Club, and I hope to see you soon. Fair winds and calm seas,

Bill Waters, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. APRIL 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

GENERAL MANAGER’S LOG 55

General Manager’s Log by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM

W

e have certainly come a long way from this time last year. Most of us are vaccinated, mask mandates are being lifted across the nation, and we are seeing increased activity around our Club locations...and in downtown St. Petersburg in general. There is without doubt a sense of comfort in the air as springtime arrives. Please do not hesitate to sign up for Summer Camps as they are filling up rapidly, we were about three-quarters full as of mid March. Downtown Pool - For those who enjoy relaxing in our downtown pool, we have installed a heat and cooling pump that will be able to heat or cool the pool, extending usage during the different seasons. Wine Society - This monthly event continues to be an enormous success and with that success comes challenges, one being the timely pick-up of ordered wines. It seems that we have become a wine storage facility, which causes problems for us, as we have storage issues without this added challenge. Starting this month, if you have not picked up your wine before the next Wine Society, you will be added to a list of members that will be unable to order wine at future Wine Society events you are attending. As staff checks you in, they will let you know if there is an order for you to pick-up, giving you the opportunity to claim your wine order at that time. Etiquette Classes anyone?– We are looking to start Etiquette Classes for children ages 7-12. This will be a five (5) week program, consisting of one 90 minute class one time per week; with a 2-hour graduation class on the final week. The course will cover things like handshake/greeting, voice levels for indoors and outdoors, eye contact, sitting postures, dining, and other valuable lessons in proper etiquette. It will also include a 3 to 4 course meal each week. We have already had several members interested and will finalize numbers and follow up once our planning and pricing is confirmed.

Pass-a-Grille dockage and new Floating Dock – Some members feel it is not necessary to make reservations out at Pass-a-Grille prior to arrival. However, when reservations are NOT made, this causes those who have made reservations to not have a spot when they arrive. Our solution to this issue will be to designate the T-Head and all Permanent Slips as "RESERVED.” All other spaces, including the North Dock and Floating Docks for "DOCK-N-DINE” will be available on a first come, first serve basis. We will also make sure there is better communication and systems between the Main Docks and PAG Docks. You will now notice we have a new floating dock on the south end of the docks which replaced the old black floating dock. This new dock is a bit longer than the old one and will allow for more Dock-n-Dine space. In closing, we are in the final stages of the Strategic Plan, although a little delayed, that will soon be presented to the Board, followed by the Membership. Within the Strategic plan (typically following a Strategic Plan) is the Master Plan. By the time you read this we are hopeful that we will have this process underway with a Master Planning firm engaged. I look forward to seeing everyone in the coming months as I make my way around our various facilities.

Cheers

Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM General Manager, COO

ON THE WATER 6

2022 Thistles Midwinters East - 65th Anniversary! by John Deermount, Regatta Chair

T

he Thistle Class celebrated its 65th Midwinters East at SPYC March 2nd through 5th. The Tampa Bay winds weren’t exactly cooperative for the first three days with only two races completed. But the Race Committee was able to fit in three races on the final day to make it a five race series.

Fourteen states were represented in the thirty (30) entries, the furthest traveler being from Texas. Paul Abdullah, with a 12 point lead, was the overall winner for the third time. Paul sails out of the Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville. Dan Hesse from Saratoga Lake Sailing Club (NY) was second. Chris Klotz from the St. Pete Sailing Center finished third sailing Thistle number 1 - which is the 77 year old class prototype. Last year’s winner, Mike Ingham, finished fifth.

The welcome party featured a Paella dinner followed by a Thistle trivia contest. Off site evening activities included a pub party at 3 Daughters Brewing and the annual shuffleboard tournament with food trucks.

APRIL 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

Commodore Waters welcomed a large crowd for the awards banquet and helped distribute the trophies. The SPYC staff stepped up as usual to ensure that the visitors had a warm welcome and a professionally run event.

George and Beth Pennington were recognized by the Thistle Class for their commitment to this event. They were also named this year’s recipient of the SPYC Ted Tolson Award for Race Committee excellence in the regatta.

ON THE WATER

ILCA Midwinters East

5 7

by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

T

ampa Bay did not disappoint with near perfect conditions, March 10th-14th for the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Midwinters East. One hundred and thirty-six sailors from the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean gathered in Elva Rouse Park for four amazing days of racing. Sailors tested their skills throughout the week with a building breeze Thursday and Friday. Saturday, sailors were greeted with a large frontal system that brought gusty conditions causing Saturday’s racing to be called off, and cooler temperatures for Sunday morning’s race start. Some sailors even saw ice on their boats Sunday morning.

Throughout the weekend the ILCA 4 (4.7) completed 7 races; the ILCA 6 (Radial) completed 8 races and the ILCA 7 (standard) completed 8 races. The St. Petersburg Yacht Club saw 16 of our members, youth, and adult sailors, compete in the event. Congratulations to Guthrie Braun, who was our top finisher in 5th place for ILCA 7 (standard); Kate Danielson who was our top finisher in 13th place for the ILCA 6 (Radial) and Bella Shakespeare who was our top finisher for ILCA 4 (4.7). Great job by all the sailors! For more information on the event visit www.spyc.org/regattas.

MOTOR CLUB

by Andy Evans

W

e're Back! So it's been awhile since the Vintage Motor Club has been active and we had a few false starts. However, after the running of this years Vintage Motor Classic there was an increased interest in getting the regular monthly "Club Within the Club" going again. We have a few things going on here, so to begin with the Vintage Motor Club - this is open to all members who are enthusiast for everything motoring. We do not concentrate on any particular type, class or year, if you like cars either collecting, motorsport, rebuilding or just driving then there is room for you. The plan is to hold monthly meetings throughout the year. Our first informal meeting will be at the Downtown Club on Thursday, April 7th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. We will be looking to run events like small gatherings, drive-outs to various destinations, and “Cars and Coffee” events. What we need now is for you to e-mail me acknowledging your interest. We will need help in running the Club, so enthusiastic volunteers are encouraged to join!

APRIL 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

The second part - it is hoped that those who supported and enjoyed the last Vintage Motor Classic Show, would also become part of our regular meetings and we need to build a strong committee for the 2023 show, which subject to City confirmation will again be in early February. We have exciting plans for this show and commence serious planning around September. You can check out updates at www. stpetemotorclassic.com, where you will find links to this years photos and information about our two charities - The Kind Mouse and the Louise Graham Regeneration Center. Which I might add, we raised a record amount for them and will be presenting their checks in the coming weeks. You can also e-mail me andyevans@ me.com or call (727) 310-5981.

What's going on with our elementary schools? Where do our southside schools stand, what are the issues and what is being done to facilitate change? Dr. Webley believes through collaboration, hard work, and clearly defined goals, staff and students will succeed. All are welcome - reservations required thru SPYC catering: (727) 8926882 or catering@spyc.org.

RV LAND CRUISERS by Angela Kowalik, Wagon Master

Let’s Rally and Roll!!!…

any of our members are part of the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) and therefore part of the Southeast Area (SEA) of FMCA. The SEA includes those chapters and members in the 4 neighboring states: AL, FL, GA, MS. A few of us attended the 2022 SEA Rally in Lakeland at the Sun ‘n Fun Expo Campus, dubbed “Luau in Lakeland”. The event was well attended, with over 400 coaches, and nearly 800 attendees from not only the southeastern area but other states and Canada, there was a lot going on and a lot of RV enthusiasts gathered in one place. The rally itself was filled with an assortment of seminars, activities, food, vendor displays, and entertainment. We looked forward to the popular dilly bar social, not to mention coffee and donuts every morning. We gathered one afternoon for our own happy hour before enjoying that evening’s entertainment. Our bikes and other compact transporters came in handy as we used them to ride back and forth to various education seminars, and later visiting each others rigs. And when one had a flat, the golf cart shuttles were everywhere and very convenient. Some of the ladies played Card Bingo one night and another afternoon enjoyed a Diamond Painting activity to learn a new craft.

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE RV LAND CRUISERS • April 5th: Meeting at 5 pm (virtual or SPYC) • April 21st-24th: FCYC Adventure Weekend near Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island • May 13th-15th FCYC Meeting, hosted by Marco Island Yacht Club

Bringing our burgee to the SEA Luau in Lakeland

Those attending with our group: • Brian & Angela Kowalik • Rick & Sarah Moseley • Ken & Corrine St. Jean • Larry & Joy Wissing • and Alums - Chris & Sally Plonsky

Gathering around for some tall "tails"

We even got “Ducked” there…twice! (It’s a JEEP thing, you might have to look it up….we did the first time it happened). This is a story for another time…

Ever been "Ducked"?

To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com

RIDERS

by Bob Frazee, President

W

e had 8 Riders make the trip to Daytona Beach to attend the Daytona Bike Week motorcycle rally. We left on March 6th. After we cleared the Tampa Bay congestion, we headed north and east on mostly state and county roads to Groveland, where we stopped for lunch. After lunch, we continued to Deland and then to Daytona Beach, where we stayed at the Fountain Beach hotel/condo; which was right on the beach. Bike Week consists of several venues spread out around the Daytona area. Main Street on Daytona Beach is the original spot where it all started eighty-one years ago, and our hotel was just a few blocks away. We also traveled to several of the other venues. One was located at Destination Daytona, which is a big complex consisting of restaurants, hotels and a huge parking lot where all the vendors set up their tents and display their wares. And of course, there was a Harley Davidson dealership plucked right in the middle of it all. Other venues included a huge swap meet, where you could find most anything you needed for your bike.

APRIL 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

The third major venue was located at the Daytona Speedway, where every motorcycle manufacturer had a large display and provided opportunities for test driving their motorcycles. The Daytona 200 motorcycle races were held here on March 10th12th. In addition, there were smaller spots where vendors gathered, often at or near a large bar, with plenty of room for parking. Music was playing all the time and several shows were scheduled everyday. Poker Runs and motorcycle rides took place daily, and routes were available to go on recommended rides. We rode the Ormond Scenic Loop route, and rode down A1A south to the Canaveral National Seashore, which runs along the coast thru a portion of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Coming home, we took a different route once we got to Groveland. From there we went west to I-75 and then south to I-275 back to St. Petersburg. Bike Week was fun, and it really had a lot to offer, even if you are not a motorcycle enthusiast.

CRUISING

FLEET by Kevin Cross, Fleet Captain

ebruary was another busy month for the Cruising Fleet. Following a successful cruise in January, two additional mid-week cruises to Carlouel YC took place in February. Tim & Diane Connolly served as Port Directors for the February 9th-11th trip hosting “docktails” with a Valentine’s Day theme aboard Lady Di 4. Cruisers dined at the Club both nights especially enjoying Port Directors the weekly Tim & Diane Connolly Wednesday Taco Bar. Eight attendees hit the Clearwater Aquarium and took the back-scenes tour which they found fascinating. Docktails aboard Lady Di 4

The final Carlouel trip took place February 16th-18th with Heber & Barbara Weller serving as Port Directors. With exceptionally beautiful warm weather, this group opted to spend their time “chilling” on the beach and swimming in the heated pool. They enjoyed cocktails in the outdoor Birdcage area followed by dinners at the Club. As the mid-week cruise concluded, several cruisers went directly Cruising Fleet in Bradenton from Carlouel to Bradenton for another few days of fun! The Bradenton cruise featured boats at both Bradenton YC and Twin Dolphin Marina in downtown Bradenton to accommodate our expanding fleet. To kick off the weekend, Port Directors, Dave & Martha Monfried, organized “docktails”

by the Twin Dolphin Marina pool followed by dinner at Mattison’s Riverwalk Grille. On Saturday, cruisers enjoyed the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, the Bradenton Art District, and the Riverwalk. While at Bradenton YC, cruisers enjoyed the pool and some friendly pickleball competition. Truly something for everyone! Our Day Trippers group met for lunch at Shore Restaurant on Longboat Key the last week of February. After consulting weather forecasts early that week, Heber Weller pronounced Wednesday as the most likely day for an enjoyable boat outing. He turned out to be half right – the afternoon was lovely but unexpected morning fog surprised us all. Despite the fog, five boats safely made the journey and had a great time. Currently the Cruising Fleet is partaking in the Annual Commodore’s Cruise, which began March 25th and ends April 9th. With 35 boats participating, this is our largest Commodore’s Cruise to date. We have 10 Port Directors coordinating activities at 15 marinas! Our kickoff dinner on March 17th provided last minute cruise details from Port Directors and a Club update from Commodore Waters who also wished us fair winds and calm seas!

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE CRUISING FLEET! · Commodore's Cruise - March 25th - April 9th

ast Captain Gloria Davis introduced a special group of guests on March 2nd. Johnnie presented the boat’s paperwork to Captain Jennifer Parramore and spoke of her mother’s passion for boating. She stated that Fay would be proud to have this legacy with the SPYC and the Salty Sisters. A standing ovation was given in thanks for the precious gift. The Capt Fay was christened after the meeting. She will be sailed in the upcoming Rainbow Regatta by Iris Mastry. Captain Jennifer thanked the 25 Salty Sisters who participated in the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series 2022, with 23 as Race Committee and two competing. “Kudos to all!”

Everyone thanked Charlie and Heather Lalanne for presenting “the best education session we’ve ever had.” They spoke about their 3-year circumnavigation that began in 1998. Co-Captain Dee Gill expressed the group’s appreciation for the amazing presentation. Dee was excited to announce that 20 Pram sailors, including all the participants in the upcoming Rainbow Regatta, showed up on Wednesday (Feb. 23rd) to meet their coaches, JP Creignou and Charlie Lalanne. Since there was no wind, the sailors rigged and tweaked the Prams and listened to JP and Charlie coach about sailing tactics.

he Broad Reachers are looking forward to April breezes after a tough beginning of the year for sailing. The weather was too cold, too windy, or no wind. The last couple of months, several of our women graciously volunteered to support other regattas in the area which pulled them away from sailing at Pass-a-Grille. Now we are sailing and preparing for the Rainbow Regatta with sailors representing the Broad Reachers. On April 5th of this year, the FWSA Rainbow Regatta will be hosted by the Dinghy Dames and held at Davis Island Yacht Club. The Dames were to host the Rainbow in 2020 & 2021, but both were cancelled due to COVID. Hopefully, the phrase “third time’s a charm” will come true.

The Broad Reachers are again sending a team of excited sailors to race this year. Thanks to Katie Rodgers, Audrey Orgo, KT Trudeau, Bijie Ding, and Juliette Clarke for stepping up and joining the big event. The team will be training on Saturdays and will be joining the Salty Sisters on Wednesdays under the coaching staff of JP Creignau and Charlie Lalanne. Sporting new sails on all the Prams, the Broads will be part of about 50+ Pram & Opti sailors from the other nine FWSA Clubs in the area. Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. special treat awaits April 18 – we’ll have our Annual Installation of Officers followed by a cooking demonstration by Chef Jonathan making a LaJolla Salad. He will provide us with a lively presentation of the techniques he used in the preparation of our delicious lunch which will follow. Bring a friend – it’s only $5.00 for guests and their lunch goes on your account unless they are a SPYC member. Make your reservation now online (www.spyc. org) or call (727) 360-1646. We start at 11:00 am but arrive early to greet everyone! Potting succulents in handmade clay pots made by LBC member Pat Burrows (left in group photo) was truly an enjoyable event in February. She made 50 planters and mugs for us to pot lovely little succulents. We love succulents – a lot of attention isn’t good for them (get it?)! t our February monthly meeting Smiles stepped into the stand as our fourth Grand Marshal. Our previous leaders, in order, were: Pull aka John Hanner, Single Barrel aka Tom Hatton, and Double L aka Gene Collins. I can say with complete confidence the Wing Shooters Society is grateful to Double L for his leadership through the last 4 years. He has certainly earned our highest level of respect. The position of Grand Marshal is most challenging at our monthly meetings. Characterized as unruly, loaded with snide remarks and snappy retorts with multiple excursions into chaos, our meetings require extraordinary management skills. This is not a position for the faint-hearted.

Prospective leaders of our club need only attend one meeting to fully grasp the required skill set. Think along the lines of lion-tamer more than charismatic leader. Having both would be a desirable combination. A requisite thick skin is understood. The remaining responsibilities of the Grand Marshal do not amount to much. All of us not wishing to take on this position are grateful to Smiles, aka Frank Robinson, for stepping up.
