CHAPTER 4 2
COMMODORE’S LOG W
elcome to the shortest month of the year. While the rest of the country in its anxiety to survive the dead of winter considers the brevity of February a good thing, we Floridians savor these so few cool short days and long nights… and the fabulous boating opportunities the month offers. Of course, January was just fine, too, and the Club had its fair share of events to go with it. Kicking off the month and year with New Year’s Eve celebrations at both Club locations, there was something for everybody; with eggnog on tap the next day downtown. Shortly thereafter, the Club hosted the annual meeting of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, with a weekend full of entertainment. It was truly an honor to host this very important and well attended event at our Club. A hardy thanks to all of the neighboring yacht clubs, as well as our own SPYC members, for attending the FCYC General Meeting and companion weekend events; including the rescheduled Vintage Motor Classic. Good times had by all! It is nice to see the new paved parking lot finally installed on the north side of the Pass-a-Grille Club. We should be breaking ground for the swimming pool facilities in a portion of the old parking lot any day now. This little beach club already makes for a great boating destination. Once the pool goes in, it will be the perfect respite from an afternoon of cavorting on the sand bars of Bunces Pass… I feel like a margarita just thinking about it. Coming up this month is SPYC’s annual Valentine’s Day Regatta, February 9th - 10th. If you have never attended, it is truly a sight to behold. Organized mayhem is the only way to describe it. Young sailors and their boats will be coming and going from all directions - - hundreds of them. After the skippers’ meeting, approximately 350 young sailors will converge on the dock, which is in and of itself an amazing sight to see. The event is so well done that the participants have a blast even when the weather fails to cooperate.
It is simply one of the biggest downtown events of the year, bar none, and a shining example of the Club at its best. Other do-not-miss water activities this month include the NOOD Regatta, February 15th – 17th, and the Thistles Midwinters East Championship February 25th through March 1st. Also in March, the highly anticipated St. Petersburg Habana Race begins on Monday, March 18th. Be sure to make plans to attend the Habana Street Party prior to the race on Saturday, March 16th. And speaking of fabulous winter boating, a/k/a chillin’, I leave you with a picture of Commodog and Commodore taken one year and three days before the release of this issue, and another of Commodog Sophie and First Mate/Wife/Mother of Beauceron, Jennifer, taken in mid-February, entitled “You want us to what?” Enjoy our Florida winter!

SPYC JUNIOR
SAILING
ACTIVITIES by Todd Fedyszyn
T
he SPYC Junior Sailing Team was well represented this Holiday Season at the Orange Bowl International Regatta hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami. This year there were close to 600 boats from all four corners of the USA and at least a dozen countries. In the 98 boat Laser Radial Fleet Guthrie Braun was our top performer finishing in 26th place overall. Following Guthrie was Heather Kerns in 40th place and Ethan Danielson in 48th. All 3 sailors have been working incredibly hard all fall and the results show it with all three qualifying for the Gold Fleet. In the Laser 4.7 Fleet Emma Shakespeare once again showed that she is always at the pointy end of the fleet finishing as 1st place girl and 3rd overall.
On the 235 boat Opti RWB course, our SPYC sailors are showing continued improvement at every major event attended. Bella Shakespeare was top performer finishing 39th in the Gold Fleet. Dorothy Mendelblatt and Kate Danielson just missed out on the Gold Fleet, but still had a great event finishing in 78th and 86th place. Also racing in the highly competitive Opti RWB fleet were Taylor Brown, Callen Burnett, Ava Shakespeare, Sophia Fuller, Adam Mendelblatt and Reid Mendelblatt. The team is gearing up for a busy winter with two major events on home soil. SPYC hosted the USODA Team Race Midwinter Championships over the MLK weekend and the annual Valentines Day Regatta over the weekend of February 9th – 10th.

YACHTING INFORMATION by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chairperson
I
n January SPYC hosted the Master Driver Team Racing Regatta. P/C Rich Doyle contributed to this article on how SPYC came to be a part of team racing. He said almost 15 years ago, US Sailing asked SPYC to run the two-on-two team race eliminations for the World Sailing, two-on-two team racing in Vienna. A past Junior Team SPYC sailor, Olympian, and Florida Sports Hall of Famer - Allison Jolly - through USF assisted in running 24 teams in 420s. What is the format? Two boats of one team (i.e. SPYC) race against two boats of another team (i.e. USF) in a single short race. Dozens of races will occur in a weekend. The key rule is the rule that the team with the last place boat loses in a single race. This makes each race tremendously exciting. What does this mean on the water? On the water what that rule means,
FEBRUARY 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING
unless one team has a solid first place and solid second place, good team skills can allow one team to legally force one boat of another team into last place. What makes the Master Driver Team Racing different? The skippers need to be at least 45 years old and it is two on two racing. There is always a waiting list of U.S. clubs that want to race at the Master Driver. What is the future of team racing? World Sailing is now discussing having keel boats, two-on-two team racing as an Olympic sport. Congratulations to the teams in this regatta and thank you P/C Doyle for your contribution to this article and Team Racing at SPYC! With Love – Mark your calendar for the Annual Yachting Recognition Awards Celebration March 15, 5:30 pm in the Ballroom. We hope to see all of you there!

MASTER DRIVER TEAM RACE
REGATTA by Janet Walker, Regatta Chair
S
t Petersburg Yacht Club was proud to host the 12th Annual Master Driver Team Race Regatta over the weekend of Jan 11th – 13th. Six teams, with sailors for two boats, arrived from Annapolis Yacht Club, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Corinthian Yacht Club, St Francis Yacht Club, and St Petersburg Yacht Club to compete in this 2 on 2 team race competition. All Skippers must be over 45 years old and at least two sailors per boat must be under 45. Two complete Round Robins were sailed in “Florida” perfect weather. It was exciting to watch as two J70s (no spinnakers) battled competitively against an opposing team of two boats on a short digital N course, taking about nine to fifteen minutes per flight. Seven Umpires, headed by Tom Rinda called the rule infractions to keep order on the course.
St Francis YC, 1st Place - Skippers Craig Healy, Shawn Bennett & crew
3rd Place- Skippers, Tim Landt and Mike Funsch - Will Reed, Fred Bickley - missing Joe Frohock & John Wallace
St Francis Yacht Club was the final winner followed closely by Texas Corinthian Yacht Club with SPYC coming in a close third. The skippers on the SPYC team were Mike Funsch and Tim Landt with crew Joe Frohock, Will Reed, John Wallace and Fred Bickley. The Lew McMaster Trophy was presented to St. Francis Yacht Club by PC Rich Doyle. Results at www.spyc.org under Regattas >>MDTR. The results were updated every 5 minutes throughout the Regatta on the website. Many thanks to the race committee with Shawn Macking as PRO with Chuck Goes, Barbara & Stan Mehaffey, George & Beth Pennington, Peter Hood, Barbara Shaffer, Corey Hall, Sam Shannon, PC Rich & Char Doyle, plus Janet Walker (Chair).

Samantha can often be found on her down time doing additional projects without needing to be asked. Congratulations Samantha - we are fortunate having you on our staff!

AMATEUR RADIOCLUB Should You Get Your Ham License? While a ham-radio license isn’t necessary, you might want to consider getting one before going offshore.
I
first heard of ham radio as a young boy. I thought it would be fun to get my ham-radio license in the same way a young boy wants to be a firefighter or a policeman. I got older and forgot about some of my aspirations while I worked on schooling, a family, and a career. Then I had an experience that rekindled my desire to get my ham or amateur radio license. Several years ago, I had the chance to help bring one of the Transpac race boats back from Hawai’i. We had an Iridium satellite phone to help keep in contact with friends and family. We also had a single-sideband radio that was even more useful. The cost of using the phone meant that it was used sparingly. Instead we relied on the SSB for daily email and check-ins with other sailors heading back to the mainland. My experience with the SSB served as a catalyst to encourage me to get my amateur radio license. Now that I’ve been through the process, I hope I can help you determine if it’s something you might want to pursue as well.
Are Ham and Marine SSB the Same? Until I started studying for my amateur radio license, I thought ham and SSB radios were the same thing. When I learned they weren’t, I tried to figure out the differences. My hope was that one was a subset of the other. While there’s some overlap, you can do things with a marine SSB that you can’t do with a ham and visa versa. Ham radio has a much wider range of frequencies, some of which overlap those in marine SSB There are also more transmission methods that can be used such as amplitude modulation and frequency modulation. Hams can also transmit using single-sideband, which is really just a modified form of AM.

Marine SSB has a number of frequencies that aren’t open to ham radio operators. While both ham and marine SSB operators can participate in the Caribbean M/M net on 7.241 MHz, only marine SSB can participate on Herb Hilgenberg’s Southbound II net on 12.359 MHz. A quick glance at a listing of the various cruising nets () and their frequencies cross referenced with the ham radio bands () shows that both ham and marine SSB users can access them. However there are a number that are only available to marine SSB.
What’s Required for Marine SSB? Most sailors know that they aren’t required to get an FCC license for their VHF radios. The only exceptions are if you can answer “yes” to any one of the following questions: • Are you are required to have a radio by law (because of vessel size or usage)? • Do you plan to communicate with or enter into foreign ports? • Do you have a radio other than VHF, EPIRB, or radar? Since marine SSB falls outside those radios listed in question three, you’re required to get an FCC license if you want to install one on your boat. The license is called a “ship station license” and currently costs $160. The license is good for 10 years but is nontransferable. That means if you sell your boat with your radio, the new owner will need to apply for his or her own license. he Broad Reachers wrapped up 2018 with their annual Christmas party December 15th featuring good food and merriment, the award of charms to sailors, an auction of paintings previously hung at the Page House, and a Chinese auction that was both suspenseful and hilarious. Broad Reachers do agree, “Tis better to give than to receive,” but they also find that, in a Chinese auction, taking gifts chosen by others can be more fun. No one’s gift was safe, as many gifts were chosen, then stolen…and stolen again.

e are well into 2019, but still thinking back to how the New Year began when we ran into some boating friends at The Field Club in Sarasota. Turns out we were all trying to get away while it was good boating weather and what a surprise to find each other at the same place, so we ended up enjoying great company to ring in the New Year. This year is off to a great start!

Five sailors were awarded charms for representing the Broad Reachers in multiple Interclub races in the fall: Katie Rodgers, Gail Poffenberger, Marti Cochran, Debbie Walcutt, and Tove Kullman. Nancy Dunn served as auctioneer for the auction of the Page House paintings, encouraging participants to keep outbidding each other until $425 was raised for Youth Sailing scholarships. Everyone was in good cheer, as the Broad Reachers wrapped up another great year of sailing and camaraderie.
Upcoming Events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • February “frostbite” cruise to Marina Jack – Feb 8-10 • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, February 14 (11:30 social, noon lunch, program to follow) For February’s Cruising Fleet Luncheon (Thursday, February 14, at noon), we are following tradition with a special appearance by this year’s Commodore Jim Byrne for our annual Commodore’s Address to the Fleet. he Riders Club would like to welcome our newest member, Thomas Murphy!
Thomas rides a Harley Davidson Street Glide and we cannot wait to help him log more miles on his bike. We also promoted a Riders Club member to ‘Ride Master’ whose finale for 2018 were 2 fabulously planned rides, including to Swack Daddy’s Bar-B-Que in Parrish, FL. You can’t beat the ambiance when the neighbor’s goats look as you eat.
Our Riders enjoyed a leisurely country ride through the Myakka State Park, and paid respects to our deceased Veterans at the Sarasota National Cemetery. Safety is always an important issue for our Riders and our last meeting focused on several safety related issues including wireless headsets and safety lighting for the bikes. Our Ride Master has “proofed” another country ride through Dade City which will be on the calendar soon along with our Key West ride rescheduled for late spring. Everyone is welcome to join our meetings which are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:15 pm at the Club.

few Saltwater Anglers were able to take advantage of a rare calm, cool, and sunny December day offshore…and if that weren’t enough, the fish bite was on fire! First stop was for Pinfish traps that were loaded, then caught Sardines and Cigar Minnows in the ship channel and headed out 35 miles to hard bottom. After putting a few Red Grouper and Lane Snapper in the box, we moved toward a nearby rock pile and found a bait ball being consumed by Sharks, Amberjack, and Bonita where the spinning rods got a workout. Topping it all off with a late season King Mackerel trolling diving plugs down the pipeline.
Come join us for our regular meetings and we’ll make some plans to get out on the water! The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at one of our next meetings on February 13th and March 13th. fter a busy Holiday season, it was great to greet our enthusiastic golfers for our January meeting. Once again Martin Morris and Jack Howard wowed us with a golf video, which proved to be a golf lesson on “Chipping”. The instruction was easy to understand and I hope many took notes! We were reminded that no matter how far we hit our drives or fairway shots, “getting up and down” can help us save that Par. More education was welcomed by our “Rule of the Month”. ack in 2012, Commodore Sandy Schoenberg received a request to participate at a shooting event at the Tampa Sporting Clays Club. The event was a fund raiser to support local charities. Sandy was not a shooter, but he knew a few SPYC members who were. With a few calls Sandy had three experienced shooters on his team; Robert Birkenstock, John Bowman and John Hanner. “I didn’t shoot that day, I was the taxi driver in a golf cart. You ride around in the woods, stopping frequently to shoot. It was like golf but more fun.” ~ Sandy Schoenberg.

a relief area. The ruling is now a player must drop the ball while standing erect and holding the ball at shoulder height and arm’s length. This rule is now simplified so the only requirement is that the ball be let go from knee height so it falls through the air before hitting the ground. On January 28th we teed up at Countryside Golf and Country Club. In the upcoming months we invite SPYC members to sign up to play for the first time without joining…because we are certain you will wonder what took you so long!
