ear SPYC Members, The holiday decorations in and around the Club and waterfront were spectacular, and events were very well attended. The Club was buzzing with activity and it’s great to see the Club with so many activities, parties, and members having fun! Welcome to our newest group of Club members. We welcome you to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club family! I encourage everyone to participate in Club activities, attend entertainment events, meet new friends, and enjoy your Club. I have received questions regarding the number of members the Club can manage, and if there is going to be a cap on memberships, an increase in Initiation Fees, or other options. It is wonderful to see the growth of our membership after eight years of stagnant numbers. During 2019 we gained 134 new memberships, and last year we enjoyed 348 new memberships! Many Clubs in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC) have had similar results and instituted wait lists in order to serve existing members appropriately. Some factors guiding us in determining our limit are kitchen, events, staffing, and parking capabilities. Your Flag Officers and Management have been working on options and solutions, and you will be advised of changes or policies instituted as they happen.

The Sailing Center has been very busy with several regattas, but I would like to highlight the very successful and wonderful ‘America's Open Disabled Regatta’. Sailors came from around Florida and out-of-state to compete. Check Smooth Sailing for details on upcoming sailing events. At 6:00 pm, December 11th, our downtown Club docks lit up! The boats in our marina turned on their holiday lights for the annual Lighting of the Yachts competition. Frank Mann with his boat ‘Mesmeriah’, won first place in the sailboat category, and Susan and Kevin Cross with their boat ‘C Breeze’ won first place in the powerboat category. Congratulations to all who participated. Don’t miss this competition next year! On Sunday, February 6th the Vintage Motor Classic, will be held in South Straub Park, right at our porch steps! Come see cars, trucks, motorcycles, and boats, 1979 and older. Sponsorships are welcome! Remember to come meet the Commodore and his wife, and Flag Officers and their spouses on Friday, January 7th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the Quarterdeck. Complimentary light Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served. Mary, I and the other Flag Officers look forward to meeting you all. Fair winds and calm seas,

Bill Waters, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. JANUARY 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

GENERAL MANAGER’S LOG 55

General Manager’s Log by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM

H

appy New Year!

I hope each of you had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends alike. 2021 continued to be challenging but much improved from that of 2020. Although 2021 had its challenges it was still a great year for the Club as it became a safe haven for our membership. The Clubs usage was up as à la carte dining increased in addition to banquets returning. Marina activities were also very active. It is now 2022 and one in which we will exceed your expectations and continue to create “Member Delight”. This is also the time of year to reflect on all the great things we have accomplished as well as those areas we can improve upon. As we prepare to set sail in this New Year our commitment is to serve the needs of our entire membership and incorporate fun filled, affordable, and diverse activities for all to enjoy. With that said, our Strategic Plan is well underway and discussion groups will be taking place early this month. With the conclusion of the discussion groups a final plan is to be presented to the membership sometime in March. For the plan to work it will need to be followed by a Club wide Master Plan which will give us the vision of what our locations can ultimately become with a little re-purposing and creativity, which will take the Club out 10 to 20 years. For the St. Petersburg Yacht Club to stay relevant and attractive in a growing community we will benefit greatly with a Master Plan. Your continued input and feedback will be critical to the success of such a plan. The word has been out but now its official – both Clubs have a new revised Dress Code and will go into effect beginning January 1, 2022. Warnings will be given in the month of

January, and it will go into full effect and enforced starting February 1, 2022. The world around us continues to become more and more casual and in dealing with COVID the last couple years enforcement may have been a bit relaxed. Nevertheless, a Club of this stature and world recognition we should be a little more refined when visiting. Here is a quick look at things “Not Permitted” in any of our Clubhouses moving forward: “Men are not to wear hats or caps inside either Clubhouse” “Sleeveless T-Shirts and tank tops” (men) “Swimwear to be appropriate at all times” “T-Shirts with pictures or writing that could be offensive” In closing, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club has been recognized for many years now as a Platinum Club of America along with 29 other fine Yacht Clubs in the nation, and now we have been recognized as one of the Top 50 Yacht Clubs in the World. This is a very exciting time for our Club with a new Strategic Plan in the works and a Master Plan to follow, as mentioned previously in my article, the future of this great Club looks brighter than ever. Congratulations! I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months as I make myself visible around our various facilities.

Cheers!

N

ovember 17th was an active day on the water for the Salty Sisters. Co-Captain Dee Gill said it was an “awesome” day, with 52 Salties and newbies at the Sailing Center and more than 40 on the water. Six Ideals raced, all with spinnakers.

Els Wiemken determined

Dee also reported that Faith Andrews-Bedford, one of the best Pram sailors in the Salties, had an unusual moment. Faith, who in the past 30plus years, had never turned over in a Pram, did so that day. She finally earned her “Flipper” charm. FWSA Delegate Beverly Smoak was proud to announce that the Salty Sister 420 Christmas Tree team of Nancy Kadau and Jennifer

ecember 11th began a new tradition for the Broad Reachers with the 1st Annual “Funship” Regatta. This new tradition was originally called Sailors & RC the “SPYC Friendship Regatta for the Broad Reachers and Salty Sisters.” The original trophy was retired in 2017 and now has been regifted in 2021. It’s intended to be a perpetual trophy showing the winners of an annual “fun” regatta at PAG for all Broad Reachers and Salty Sisters in memory of Peggy Lonnin, the original donor of the trophy. Her charms will live on through the winners and be displayed on the trophy itself.

December 8th was the Annual Candy Cane Regatta. Dee explained that this regatta has been going on “forever” thanks to the “evil genius” of Past Captain Helen Larsen. The results: Christmas Tree Race: 1st - Past Captain Els Wiemken, 2nd - Nancy Kadau and 3rd - Past Captain Carol Hansen. Candy Cane Race: 1st place with the most candy canes retrieved was Audrey Orgo Sandy Merrifield, 2nd to Nancy Kadau, and Mik Severini came in 3rd. Keeping with our annual tradition, we donated the candy canes to the Ronald McDonald House. Poker Run: 1st place & 2nd places went to Carol Hansen and Tish Bowden, both having straight flushes. In addition to the Candy Cane races, there was also an Ugly Sweater contest, with Gail Poffenberger winning that contest. The winners of the 2007-2017 Friendship Regatta will remain along with the new winners for years to come. Janet Walker, who was instrumental in bringing this race back, along with Carol Janet Walker with 3rd Place Green Team Hansen put their heads together and came up with a great “fun” day of racing. We decided to make it different and fun by forming teams of sailors and competing in different relay races. Gloria Davis, 2nd Place Red Team Gary Spivack (Juliette’s husband), Bonnie (Janet Walker’s sister), Mary McCarthy, and Katie Rodgers all served as RC, either on land or in the safety boat. The teams consisted of: 1st place Purple Team: Els Wiemken, Marti Cochran, Carol Hansen; 2nd place Red Team: Joanne Simmons, Bijie Ding, Juliette Clark 3rd place Green Team: Nancy Kadau, KT Trudeau, Audrey Orgo; 4th place Gold Team: Dee Gill, Suzanne Broohar; 5th place Blue Team: Charl Hadfield, Sandy Merrifield, Lori Hodges

Let’s Rally and Roll!!!…

s today your someday? Are you getting out there seeing all there is to see? No bucket list would be complete without a visit to Yellowstone, the first national park. It’s mostly in the northwest corner of Wyoming, but extends into Montana and Idaho making it one of the largest in the lower 48 states. It encompasses a vast area of geothermal features (like Old Faithful geyser) to the Grand Prismatic Spring, has one of the largest highelevation lakes (Yellowstone Lake), is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera (the largest supervolcano on the continent), and has the largest public herd of bison in the US. Old Faithful It’s truly a beautiful place and fills you with awe.

So that’s why, at our next face-to-face meeting on February 1st at 5:00 pm, we will share some adventures from visits to Yellowstone National Park.

CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB If you didn’t bring your own shells, you my friend, are out of luck. Why shotgun shells are scarce is too political to be discussed here.

W

hich sporting clays venue we shoot on Friday is a weekly decision loaded with issues. There are three places relatively close, and two a little farther away. Sarasota Sporting Clays, Tampa Bay Sporting Clays and FishHawk Sporting Clays are a 60 minute drive; at 75 minutes is Tenoroc and Black Hawk is 90 minutes away. There are other things that should be checked. Availability: The venue needs to be open for walk-in shooters. Occasionally venues host charity or competitive events. This has the same devasting effect as a private event sign on your favorite restaurant’s door. Ammo: Recently the availability of shotgun shells has entered the decision. This was not a problem at venues before. With limited supply, the choices are reduced, quantity per sale is restricted and prices have gone up. There are times when the venue does not have what you need.

RIDERS CLUB by Bob Frazee, President

H

appy New Year 2022! I hope everyone has a happy and healthy new year. The Riders Club consists of several motorcycle enthusiasts who get together weekly for a ride. We take turns planning the ride, with a strong emphasis on finding routes with little traffic, curvy roads and interesting features. A highlight of the rides is our lunch stop. The challenge here is to find a place that is unique in its ambiance and has good food. Our rides typically are about 180-220 miles and run about 5 hours. We generally meet at 9:00 am and are back in St. Petersburg by around 2:00 pm. We have another new member to add to our group. A big welcome to Bob Russell! We are glad to have you join us, and we look forward to many good rides with you! I usually pick one or two of our recent weekly rides for each newsletter. We generally have anywhere from 2 to 6 or so riders on any given trip. The ride I want to talk about is one of our most popular rides, and one of my personal favorites.

Weather: Both the day of and the previous day’s weather have a big influence. We will avoid thunder storms and anything heavier than a misty rain. Bitter cold or high temperature can be a no go for some of us. High winds that close the Skyway bridge pushes Sarasota off the list. A heavy rain the day before can turn the shooting course into a wearyour-waders event, we are not Those wishing to join are that hard core. encouraged to contact:

Where to eat: A morning of genebcollins@hotmail.com festively mild criticism of your (727) 385-4878 buddy’s shooting skills will make all laugh and jack-up the collective appetite. We need to know nearby good places for lunch. Having two choices is important too. Not everybody enjoys fried catfish every time we shoot. Who decides: Copperhead, aka Mark Foster, usually coordinates the weekly shoot. Once, when Mark was out of town, we discovered way too many cars, a bunch of catering trucks and a check-in station for a private event. We met at the parking lot of the Cracker Barrell restaurant on 54th Ave N., which is our normal meeting place when we are headed north. We traveled I275N >Veterans Expressway Memorial Highway N. >SR 54 > East on SR 54 > to Land of Lakes Blvd N. > then to Hale Rd E. Hale Road is a nice curvy road with tree canopy covering the road in several places and dotted with quite a few beautiful large homes; many of which have facilities for horses. Hale Road took us to Collier Pkwy N. which became Parkway Blvd. From there we headed NE on Ehren Cutoff to SR 52. Ehren Cutoff is another scenic road with lots of curves and more large properties with nice homes. We headed east on SR 52 to Bellamy Bros Rd. After a short break, we headed North on Bellamy Bros Rd to Johnson Rd., then traveled East on Johnson Rd to Lake Lola Rd N., then zig zaged East on Bayway Rd back to Bellamy Bros Rd N. >Hayman Rd E. >Spring Lake Rd >back to Lake Iola Rd which took us to St. Joe’s Rd. From here we headed East on St. Joes Rd to Curry RD S. into San Antonio. After a great lunch at On Q Smokehouse Grill, we traveled SR 52 W >Old Pasco Rd S.> SR 54 East>to I 75S >I275 S and back into St. Petersburg. Interested in the Riders Club?
