JUNIOR SAILING

by Todd Fedszyn

T

he SPYC Junior Sailing Team has had a busy fall season with well over 200 regatta participations as a team. Between our Opti Green fleet, RWB, Laser and HS, we were well represented all across the state of Florida and beyond. Over the weekend of November 22-24 SPYC hosted the 3rd annual J70 Youth National Championships. Eleven of the top youth keelboat teams from around the United States were in attendance and were accepted by resume through a panel of J 70 experts. SPYC was well represented by the team of Heather Kerns, Emma Shakespeare, Emily Allen, and Heidi Hicks. Sailing as the only all-female team in the event, the girls posted top scores throughout the weekend and ended up in 3rd place overall.

The Opti RWB Team travelled to Naples to compete in the annual Naples Cup Youth Regatta. Rosie Simpson was our top performer in 13th overall and 5th in the blue fleet. Also travelling to Naples were Christopher Schaefer and Wesley Wood. The Laser Team travelled to Jacksonville to compete in the Laser District 13 Championships hosted by the Florida Yacht Club. Conditions for the event were cold and windy with a front passing by early on Saturday. Our top performer in the Laser Radial was Guthrie Braun in 7th and our top performer in the Laser 4.7 was Kate Danielson in 9th. Also competing were Ethan Danielson, Heather Kerns, Emily Allen, Emma Shakespeare, Logan Rimel, Trevor Hicks, Sidney Moyer, Bella and Ava Shakespeare, and Jack Carter. The SPYC Junior Sailing Team has a busy schedule ahead when the New Year settles in so be sure to wish all your Junior Sailing friends the best of luck in 2020!

AMERICA’S DISABLED OPEN REGATTA 2019

by Janet Walker, Chair

D

ecember 5-8, Saint Petersburg Yacht Club was proud to host this 23rd Annual America’s Disabled Open Regatta. Sailors came from Canada, Ireland, and the USA to compete in Sonars and 2.4 mRs. Unfortunately, the weather wind gods did not cooperate; instead we enjoyed two lovely warm, windless Florida days until Sunday morning, when we were able to complete two races. Again this year we were pleased to have three teams from the Judd Goldman Foundation in Chicago and our favorite Irish team skippered by John Twomey. The Canadians were well represented with 6 2.4mRs participating. The Grunson Milam Award was awarded to Louise Anstey (skipper) and Julia Dorsett (crew). This award, donated by Linda Merkle, goes to the top scoring female crew and the top scoring skipper in the Regatta.

Many thanks go to the SPYC Sunshine Rotary Club for sponsoring a delicious pancake and sausage breakfast ….always scrumptious and appreciated by all! Kudos go to the SPYC RC headed by Gina Bowden Pierce & Jennifer Paramore as co- PROs. Additional RC participants were George & Beth Pennington, Helle Getz, Barbara & Stan Mehaffey, John Deermount, Maurice McGough, Jeff Wright, Tom Ritschel, Karen Park, Rosemary Sherman, Sherry Welch, Peter Hood, Bill Robbins, Norm & Susan Huff, Mary & Gene McCarthy, Barb Schaffer, Susan Wallace, Robert Trumble, and Janet Walker. Commodore Blacker presented the awards. John Twomey (Ireland) with crew Bryan Tabler and Julia Dorsett - 1st in the Sonar Class. Louise Anstey (Canada) won the 2.4mR class. Results are posted at www.spyc.org under Regattas with a link to yachtscoring.com.

appy New Year! Yes, it’s the Roaring 20’s and those in the Sport of Sailing have a lot of reasons to make some noise. On the global front the Tokyo 2020 Olympics kicks off with opening ceremonies July 24th - August 9th. The sailing venue is south of Tokyo in the city of Enoshima, the same sailing venue for the 1964 Summer Olympics. The United States will have fifteen athletes in ten Olympic classes. The sailing events include: RS:X (Windsurfer) Men/Women, Laser – Men, Laser Radial- Women, Finn- Men, Doubled-handed 49er Skiff- Men, 49erFX Skiff-Women, 470-Men/Women and the Nacra 17 – Mixed. For updates on the selection process of the athletes, visit the US Sailing website.

Nationally, US Sailing has scheduled their Adult and Youth Championships at venues throughout the country. Regionally, in Florida, you can find yourself sailing almost every week with over 70 events ready for registration. Locally, get on the water through events and classes at our sailing center, volunteering at upcoming regattas, and joining one of our many Clubs Within the Club that are land and water based. What’s your 2020 plans for getting on the water? “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” – Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows.

REGISTER NOW FOR THE 2020 SPSC SUMMER CAMP!

The sailing center will be offering 10 weeks of classes beginning June 1st - August 6th. Registration opens February 1st. Full summer camp schedule is available at www.sailstpete.org. Contact 727-822-3113 or sailingcenter@spyc.org to register.

TO REGISTER:

Contact SPYC Docks at 727-822-3227 with your preferred time & location.

Why do you want a VSC decal?

Boats that pass the examination are awarded a distinctive VSC decal that alerts the Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and other law-enforcement agencies that your boat was found to be in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws.

Frequently, such agencies will not detain or board boats displaying a current-year decal that are otherwise operating safely. SMOOTH SAILING | JANUARY 2020

AMATEUR RADIOCLUB by Ralph Warmack (W4TNY)

T

he Amateur Radio Club (ARC) facilitates radio communications for SPYC boating events, during local emergencies, and promotes camaraderie among those who share interests in amateur radio. All SPYC and FCYC members interested in radio communication are welcome to join and participate in ARC activities. The ARC’s “ham” station (call sign KJ4SCQ) is located in the downtown clubhouse with an antenna on the top level of the garage. While it can be operated locally, the station is also connected to the internet so that it can be operated remotely by ARC members using their computers and/or smartphones. ARC recently upgraded the station’s control unit to eliminate the vagaries of standard computer software.

ARC meetings are held every third Tuesday at 6:00 pm in the Park View Room, with a pre-meeting “Eyeball for a Highball” in the lounge. You can also observe our “On The Air” radio net in operation by joining members with handheld radios at PAG on the outside deck every Monday at 5:30 pm. If you are interested in becoming a licensed Amateur Radio Operator, ARC members can help you prepare for the written exam (no Morse code required). Be prepared for next year’s Hurricane Season by getting your ham license now! Study help online www.hamtestonline.com.

Next meeting will be held on January 21st. Jack Satterfield, ARC President, W4GRJ (Contact w4grj@arrl.net)

I N M E MORY OF

WAYNE BOND

O

ur Riders would like to express their deepest condolences to the family and friends of fellow Rider and Past Club President Wayne Bond who passed away in December. Wayne had a sticker on the back of his bike that said: “Just put me back on my bike”. He loved riding since he was 15 years old growing up in Miami where he spent an hour or so locked up due to some difference with the Law and his bike. He attended Florida State, left to join the Marines, then graduated from the University of South Florida, became an accomplished partner in a public accounting firm, and a devoted Family Man. As much as he enjoyed riding, his clients always came first as he would defer to his obligation to them if our rides interfered with any of their IRS due dates. He loved his family and looked forward to his yearly visits to his daughter in Brussels. Wayne was not one to waste words, but everyone listened when he had something to say or offered to lead another ride. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, especially his family, friends, associates, and fellow Bikers. SMOOTH SAILING | JANUARY 2020

t’s more than bringing back the result of a good shot. On a recent quail hunt in Georgia, fifteen Society members observed first-hand the value of well trained dogs. Many birds, quail are a good example, nestle into the brush and are hard to see. You can walk right by and never know they were there. That’s where dogs are most useful. You need two kinds, pointers and flushers. Pointers run around working the brush seeking birds with their nose. The flusher stays with the hunter. When the pointer finds a bird he will freeze into position with

Santa in his Florida Garb

We continued our festive spirit though the week for our annual Holiday Party at the Club. Food, libations, music, dancing, and a visit from the Florida Santa who was decked out in his warm weather “Golf Garb”, set the stage for a memorable gathering. The male Golfer of the Year was awarded to Mike McDonough and the female Golfer of the Year was awarded to Connie Smith. More frolic continued though the evening when we belted out the “Twelve Days of Christmas” with props and gyrations at each table. There was even a chorus line of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” blinking nosed dancers! We sure know how to party, so come join our group this coming year. his nose pointing at a hidden bird. The only thing moving is his tail. It’s a sight to see, his tail up in the air, wagging back and forth, visually screaming “I found one!” With a bird located, the hunter moves into position for a good shot. On command the flusher charges into the brush, thrashing around to provoke the bird into flight. Sometimes the bird is stubborn and does not immediately pop up. But the dog’s nose doesn’t lie and the thrashing continues until the bird tries to escape. If the shot is true to the mark it’s a race, both dogs eager to capture and return the prize. If the hunter fails to make the shot, I swear the dogs give you that look, in Wing Shooter Society parlance it’s a blunt, “Come on man!”
