CHAPTER NINE 2

COMMODORE’S LOG I hope this Commodore’s Log finds you safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. The COVID- 19 global pandemic is still dictating our activities every day. We are continuing to implement strict safety and sanitation protocols to reduce the chances of transmission. Due to the increased growth in confirmed positive cases in our area, we have established an Infection Control Committee staffed with medical experts to guide us through this pandemic. In a recent notice from our General Manager he updated us on the current status of COVID-19 at the Club. I would like to reiterate those facts here: "Last month, we were made aware of three individuals who have been to various Clubowned outlets in the past two weeks and have received positive COVID-19 test results. At the direction of the Infection Control Committee, we have implemented the CDC’s protocol for Contact Tracing (www.cdc.gov) and have already reached out directly to the individuals who met those criteria." "Although these particular incidents were relatively isolated, we believe that the sheer magnitude of new positive cases in our community will inevitably lead to additional positive cases that will impact our Club."

JULY/AUGUST 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING

"As one of the most effective ways of decreasing the chances of transmitting and/ or contracting COVID-19, our Club will be enforcing Pinellas County’s executive order requiring face coverings while on-premises. For the health and safety of all our members, guests, and staff, please ensure that you and your guests come prepared with a face covering when planning to visit any of the Club-owned properties. In addition, we have temporarily ceased valet service at the downtown clubhouse for the foreseeable future." We will continue to monitor this pandemic closely and respond quickly with updates to safety and sanitation protocols to reduce the chances of transmission. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay positive.

Commodore Michael Blacker

eptember 11th -13th of this year the St. Petersburg Classic Regatta will celebrate an 11th Anniversary. The event has raised over $100,000 for Neighborly Care Network providing Meals on Wheels for those in need throughout Pinellas County. Meals on Wheels originated in Pinellas County and now provides over 1200 hot meals five days a week to house-bound seniors. The focus is on fun and the racing competition casual with a pursuit start and lots of prizes for team spirit, costumes, and most importantly the “Good Neighbor Trophy” for the boat and crew raising the most for Meals on Wheels; according to SPSA Vice Commodore Rich Treinen. The 2019 event successfully incorporated a classic motor yacht display at the Club docks. Hatteras was the featured builder.

SPYC’s Carol Hansen Chosen President of

FLORIDA WOMEN’S SAILING ASSOCIATION

Owners of Classic motor yachts are encouraged to enter and display their boats and compete for “Best in Show”. The St. Petersburg Yacht Club has assumed the leadership role in running the regatta under the direction of Regatta Cochairs, Gloria Davis and Jody Abrams. Regatta Sponsorship Chair, Gerry Douglas, is pleased that the marine industry has been generous with support from Yanmar/Mastry Engine Center, Raymarine, Sea Hawk Paints, Elite Marine, Embree, and Catalina Yachts. The NOR can be found online at www.spyc.org/Regattas. As a precaution, on Monday, August 24th a “Go/No Go” decision will be made if restrictions as a result of COVID-19 will not allow a successful event. Entry fees will be refunded as necessary.

his hot weather sure put a new meaning to “Trail Blazing”. In May, as things started to open back up, a few of us took our “home” on the road to blaze some trails. What better way to continue to self-quarantine by taking it with you? An impromptu trip included several stops around Florida: Riverside RV Resort in Arcadia, Three Flags in Wildwood, and Grand Oaks Resort in Weirsdale (an equestrian venue) RVing in Florida followed by a stop at Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont. Those making all or part of this trip included Corrine & Ken St. Jean, Angela & Brian Kowalik, & Rick and Sarah Moseley. Prior to arriving at Grand Oaks, we did a drive through to peruse and scope out the location and who should we run into but Nick and Angela Metro who already discovered what a great destination this was!!! Did you know that a picnic table makes a great 6 ft divider for social distancing? While in Lake Louisa, our group took the winery tour at Lakeridge Winery & Vineyard. The masks had to come off for the “tasting”.

he LBC activities will not be deterred by a pandemic. We are moving forward with plans for exciting programs September through May for 2020 and 2021. Things will be different but more robust than ever. We are challenged by the situation but inspired by the opportunity for innovation!

This summer we will help you get set-up to use Zoom if you are not already using it. For assistance with Zoom, contact Ilene Robeck (irrobeck@gmail.com) and she will provide a tutorial and teach you everything you need to know to get started. Planned programs include a celebration of the anniversary of the 100th year of women’s suffrage, a fashion show featuring accessorizing and how to jazz up your wardrobe, a local author, and much more. We even have a method to continue that ever popular name tag drawing for a bottle of wine!

The 2020-2021 LBC board has been elected – board members are: Patsy Warmack, President; Angela Kowalik, Vice President; Sharon Ogan, Secretary; Maryette Miller, Treasurer; Ilene Robeck, Programs; and Cheryl Lanfear, Membership.

And just to spice things up, we are starting some new specialty areas for participation – Mah Jongg will continue on Monday but we also plan water aerobics, the Ladies Lair – a day time book group and more.

We recognize that many of our members are vulnerable to COVID-19 and we are planning accordingly. Our program meetings will be held face-to-face AND virtually simultaneously. Therefore, if you are not comfortable attending

If you haven’t paid your dues yet, now is the time. Contact Maryette Miller (maryette06@tampabay.rr.com) Treasurer or Cheryl Lanfear (mclanfear@yahoo.com). Dues are just $30.00 and worth every penny!!

CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB 18

by Rich Treinen

O

ur wild game dinners are held every Spring, usually in March, but there is no set rule for when this event takes place. We don’t have rules for anything. Last year’s event had way too much food, lots of leftovers. My feelings were hurt because nobody wanted any of my cucumber salad. Recalibrating from last year, our Grand Marshall orchestrated a more reasonable menu. Cucumber salad was not on his list. What was included was a boatload of Wing Shooter Society harvested quail with additional headliners; venison and bison; ribs and chicken too as well as a plethora of deliciously unhealthy fixins. Somebody brought a 1905 salad as the healthy choice. In our normal fashion, exquisite digestifs and fine cigars capped the evening. As always, the Society members had a grand time.

SALTY SISTERS

The culinary artists preparing our feast were Jack Cartier, Wayne Andrews, and Gene Collins. We were hosted earlier this year on the evening of March 12th at the home of Fred Bickley. At the conclusion of the evening Grand Marshall Collins presented our host with a fabulous beverage in a bottle. Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Gene Collins at (727) 385-4878, or genebcollins@hotmail.com.

Picnic at the Park

T

he months of April and May were filled with virtual education for the Salty Sisters shared by Race-Chair Jennifer Parramore and Co-Captain Els Wiemken. The Salty Sisters also participated in a well-attended virtual classroom session conducted by Martin Kullman. Due to the continuing closure of the Sailing Center, two Optis and two recently purchased dollies were moved outside for Salty Sisters to sail, in addition to being able to sail Ideals. Sailing slowly resumed on May 20th with 9 participants and on May 27th with 15 participants going out on Ideals, Optis, and Sunfish. Gloria Davis headed up Race Committee for both days. Sailing was followed by lunch in the park with take-out orders from the Club. JULY/AUGUST 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING

Other activities during the months of May & June included two rounds of Salty Sister Bingo. The participants exercised, cooked, cleaned, organized, took their dogs for walks, and even some gave doggy haircuts. Each day was something different. It was great staying in touch and sharing with the other Salty Bingo Players. Included among the players were: Angela Treinen, Marti Cochran, Ellen Pavone, Joanne Simmons, Katie Rodgers, Anna Olecka, Barbara Goodman, Els Wiemken, Carol Hansen, JoAnn Chamberlain, & Debbie Walcutt. Regular Club lunches are tentatively planned to resume with Ideal sailing.

First Place Champions with Match of Cards

Closest to the Par 3 Pins Winners and Closest to the Line

T

he Golf Group was back in the “swing’” for June with our usual monthly golf meeting at the Club. We respected social distancing guidelines while rejoicing to be able to say hello to fellow golfing buddies face to face, or rather face mask to face mask.

• • •

Since golf is an outdoor activity, we were able to safely have an event on June 16th at the beautiful venue, The Bayou Club. The staff welcomed us with sanitized carts, designated one per player. A large group of 23 lunched after play in the Grill Room with a special menu printed just for us! We surely hope to be invited there again this summer. I suppose our pairings were perfect since First, Second, and Third place teams all had a score of 1 under Par. In order to secure their place, the teams “matched cards” and the results are as follows.

• •

Second Place Team at The Bayou Club Grill

First Place: John Rogers, Phil Protz, Brad Bell, Isabel Schoenberg (with a show of cards) Second Place: Steve Hamblin, Susan Arsenault, Mel Weinstock Third Place: Neil Crosson, Steve Deininger, Rand Valentin, Mike McDonough Closest to the Pin Winners: Isabel Schoenberg, Charles Bruner, Guy Anderson, Jim Krause Closest to the Line: Scott Boyle

We will not have a golf meeting for the months of July and August but will resume in September. We invite SPYC members to join our fun group in our future golf scrambles. Contact Susan Arsenault at sueatcp@aol.com for further details.

he Broad Reachers wrapped up their sailing season at Pass-a-Grille with a return to the water May 16th and again May 23rd. On May 16th, nine sailors shook off the rust from a two-month layoff and sailed three races, with Race Committee members Gloria Davis, Mary McCarthy, and Kathy Ahern officiating from the T-dock. A week later, seven sailors hit the water, with Race Committee members Gloria Davis, Mary McCarthy, and Janet Walker. A big thanks to Knotty Bouy Paul Goodman for driving the safety boat! Sailors and others participating in one or more days of sailing, swimming, and lunch included Barbara Arnold, Carol Hansen, Joanne Simmons, Katie Gloria & Mary Rodgers, Els Wiemken, Angela Treinen,
