CHAPTER EIGHT 2

COMMODORE’S LOG I

hope this Commodore’s Log finds you safe and healthy. The COVID-19 global pandemic is still here affecting the way we live our lives every day. I am reminded of the way 911 surprised us, devastated us, and then changed the way we lived our lives. We came together as a country after 911 and we can do it again. I still think every day about those who have been affected by this disease and the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, and first responders on the front lines of the battle to keep us healthy. Our General Manager and his management team are continuing to comply with all federal, state, and local guidelines regarding the operations of our restaurants and lounges. Here are a few changes coming June 2nd: . We will be resuming the use of china, silverware, and glassware in the Heritage Lounge. . Extended hours of operation Friday and Saturday in the Heritage Lounge. . Members may enjoy service untill 11:00 pm, with live entertainment from 7:00 - 10:00 pm. . Service at Tiki Bar will continue to be provided Tuesday though Sunday. . Live entertainment at the Tiki Bar will resume Friday nights from 5:30 - 8:30 pm. . Wine Society will resume June 11th and June 12th at the Downtown Clubhouse. The big news this month is that the Sailing Center has re-opened. Sailing classes for adults and children have resumed, and youth racing teams have begun JUNE 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING

practicing again. Summer camps have been modified to operate in accordance with federal, state, and local guidelines. We have 362 kids registered as of the end of May. The Sailing Center underwent numerous upgrades during the shutdown, including new opti and laser racks, classroom upgrades, and a large-scale fleet maintenance program. Twilight Racing is back on Friday nights and the main docks are now open to FCYC members. Our deck boat continues to be available. It has been a popular way for members to continue to remain socially distant, yet experience the water with their families. As the things we enjoy continue to re-open we must remember that COVID-19 is still with us. While our General Manager and his management team have gone beyond all of the guidelines to make our Club safe and enjoyable remember that we as individuals are ultimately responsible for its transmission. Please continue to wash your hands frequently, when hand soap is not available use hand sanitizer and don’t forget about social distancing. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay positive.

IMPORTANT UPDATES 4

COVID-19 CLUB UPDATE From our General Manager: Dear Members,

I

t has been a few weeks since the reopening of the Club; we are happy to be returning to a sense of normalcy. As always, the health and safety of our members, guests and employees is the utmost importance. The adherence to the sanitation requirements is becoming well ingrained in the employee’s daily practices and procedures. We are extremely fortunate to have received volunteered support from the Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at USF Morsani College of Medicine. Under his guidance, we have completed several walkthroughs of our facilities, including the Main Clubhouse and Sailing Center. He confirms that the practices, procedures and antibacterial products we have in place are safe and effective in minimizing our members’ exposure to the virus. In addition to the steps our operation has taken, the Chairman recommends that individuals can further protect themselves and others by wearing a mask in all of the Club’s public areas, as well as practicing safe social distancing by remaining 6 feet apart. Throughout each day, our housekeeping department continues to sanitize the Club’s hard and soft surfaces. In addition, several of our air conditioning units have been fitted with Reme Halo air purification systems and we are replacing the filters more frequently. Portable fans are being added to ensure a fast and efficient air exchange throughout the building.

SPYC Nauticats! D

o you have a song in your heart? How about a tune in your head? If so, have you thought about joining the NAUTICATS! We are the SPYC singing group, founded by three women in 2007, as part of the Salty Sisters. We have now evolved into over thirty (30) members from all over the Club, and in 2018 we welcomed our first and only male member. We gather on Tuesday afternoons to put together programs and practice songs. We meet year ‘round, but summertime is less structured. We sing all over the Yacht Club and for special events like Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, and other holiday events. In late August we start putting together a fall program, followed by Christmas (which is our big event) and the springtime. We sing and have programs in nursing facilities; and at seasonal events in St. Petersburg. The Nauticats perform “free-of-charge” and do not accept remuneration. The only condition is that the locale must have a piano. Most of the NAUTICATS have tasks within the group to provide necessary functions like copying songs, scheduling, etc. Judy Petit McFadden is the founder of the group and she remains the chair person and conductor. If you are interested, please contact judyp@tampabay.rr.com.

GROUP by Connie Smith

O

ur last outing on March 23rd, before the sheltering in place because of the COVID-19 virus, was held at Tarpon Woods Golf Club in Palm Harbor. Jan Stephenson, LPGA Professional, whose name might be familiar to many of us, has refurbished this golf club with a 503C designation to benefit Wounded Warriors and First Responders. We golfed for a worthy cause this month!

* 1st Place: Steve Hamblin, Susan Arsenault, John Arsenault -6 * 2nd Place: Jim Krause, Charles Bruner, Dennis Augur, Mike Foster -5 * 3rd Place: Tom Ritschel, Bob Bedford, Barbara and Steve Deininger -4

Even though we had no formal outings these past many weeks, some of us ventured out in the sun to play golf with strict parameters. Courses have placed sleeves in the hole cup to make it only one inch deep as to prevent one from touching the flagstick when retrieving the ball. Rakes have been removed from the bunkers. One player on a cart which has been sanitized is the rule, and players are required to maintain social distancing.

An added note is that Jan Stephenson also has a vineyard in California and has opened a wine shop at this golf venue. Four bottles of wine were donated to us for the day’s lucky drawing. Winners were John Rogers, Steve We hope to soon resume our outings but in a new way….. Deininger, Charles Bruner, and Mark Foster. Perhaps the contact Susan at sueatcp@aol.com to join the Golf Group. Wine Society of SPYC can invite Jan to visit us!

RV LAND CRUISERS

Let’s Rally and Roll!!!

The view out our window!

by Angela Kowalik, President

I

n March, we took our own RV to the Isles Yacht Club in anticipation of attending our first FCYC meeting by RV. We were able to stay right on the yacht club property for the mere price of electricity…how great is that! And the view out our window was phenomenal. Little did we know, this would be it for us for the next two months. The first sign of things to come was when they cancelled the FCYC meeting (but we got to stay a couple days anyway as the club was still open).

When you have an RV (a new one at that), the last thing on your mind is to “stay at home”, but that’s what we did after that, just like everyone else. Our April and May RV Land Cruisers meetings were canceled, and so were many RV reservations. For the RV community, many RV resorts would let you stay in place if you were already there, but no new reservations or entries. By the end of May, things started opening back up gradually so I hope to bring you news of our group’s adventures now that we can “hit the road”. Our meetings will resume in the fall where we hope to hear about everyone’s summer travels. To join the group please contact Angela Kowalik at koalafam@tampabay.rr.com . Looking forward to seeing you around the next bend …
