J/FEST

5

2020!

by Rich Treinen, Regatta Chair

J

/88 and J/111 competitors from seven yacht clubs participated in this year’s J/Fest Regatta held January 24-26. SPYC’s Chuck Goes and his race committee team set 1 mile leg windward/leeward races for the asymmetrical spinnaker J/Boats. Friday’s racing was delayed while a windless fog enveloped Tampa Bay. Once the fog cleared 2 races in light wind were completed. Saturday’s 4 races were under clear skies and a tactical 8 to 10 knot breeze. Sunday’s shifty 5 to 7 knot wind stayed steady until a slow fade in velocity began half way through the 2nd race. All boats finished this 8th race in the lightest of wind.

Spiff took 3rd and Hill’s Sitella took 4th. With their total points now knotted at 12, Ruhlman won the tie breaker by virtue of beating Hill in that final race. In the J/88 Class, New York Yacht Club’s Iris Vogel’s Deviation finished 1st with 11 points while Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club’s Andy and Sarah Graff’s Exile took 2nd with 13 points. Dinners on Thursday and Saturday evening were held for the 62 sailors and the 12 SPYC Race Committee team members. Lunch was served during Sunday afternoon’s award ceremony. A liquid trophy of fine rum was awarded to Massachusetts skipper Douglas Curtiss for his crew management skills. Curtiss’ J/111 Wicked 2.0 was the only boat to arrive at registration with all crew liability waivers completed.

Heading into race 8 SPYC’s Rob Ruhlman trailed Hampton Yacht Club’s Ian Hill by 1 point in the J/111 Class. Ruhlman’s Spaceman

2020 MASTER DRIVER TEAM RACE REGATTA by Janet Walker, Regatta Chair

S

t. Petersburg Yacht Club was especially proud to host this 13th annual Master Driver Team Race Regatta …especially proud because we finally won this year! Skippers David Mendelblatt and Mitchell Rogers with team mates John Wallace, Matt Braun, Kai Cox, and Liam McCarthy represented the St. Petersburg Yacht Club against five teams from Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, Annapolis Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club and Seawanhaka Yacht Club to capture the win in this 2 on 2 team racing competition. Two complete round robins were sailed in varying winds. It was exciting to watch as two J70s battled competitively against an opposing team on two J70s on a short digital “N” course; taking 9 to 15 minutes for each flight. Eight umpires headed by Tom

Rinda called the rule infractions to keep order on the course. Results are at www.spyc.org under Regattas—MDTR. The results were updated every 5 minutes. Many thanks to Todd Fedyszyn as PRO and his RC team with Chuck Goes, Barbara and Stan Mehaffey, George and Beth Pennington, Barbara Shaffer, Selga Sakks, Tommy Wheatly, Commodore Michael Blacker, Bill McCarthy, Gina Bowden Pierce, Maurice McGough, Janet Walker (Chair) plus Char and Rich Doyle (liaison). Kudos go to the St. Pete Sailing Center and the Yacht Club staff for always doing a great job.

In the 89 boat Opti Silver Fleet, Finn Cox was our top performer finishing in 16th overall. Finn was followed closely by Wesley Wood in 18th, Maija Andert 22nd and Leah Abrams in 24th. Also competing for SPYC were Cole Rogers, Bennet Lamb, Katherine Sullivan, Anna Andert, Jad Aberdabo, Parker Connell, Charley Reynolds and Thomas Guilford.

Conditions for the event were excellent with 5-18 knots of breeze from the northeast and very challenging current moving up the race course. All three SPYC Race Committees did an outstanding job of managing the conditions and providing the sailors with square start lines and great race courses.

The Laser Course played host to 24 Laser 4.7’s and 33 Laser Radials, our biggest Valentine’s Day Laser Regatta to date. SPYC’s Guthrie Braun won the Laser Radial Fleet and was followed by Emma Shakespeare in 3rd overall and top girl, Heather Kerns in 4th and Ethan Danielson in 5th and Preston Weaver in 6th. In the Laser 4.7 Fleet, SPYC’s Kate Danielson finished 2nd overall and was the top female. She was followed by Peyton Weaver in 4th and Jack Carter in 6th. Also competing for SPYC were Sidney Moyer, Elizabeth Sullivan, Ava Shakespeare, Bella Shakespeare, Evan Wern, Heidi Hicks, Trevor Hicks, Akseli Heikenin and Logan Rimel.

ver the weekend of February 8-9, SPYC hosted the annual Valentine’s Day Regatta. 346 sailors from all corners of the USA as well as Canada, Italy, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Australia competed for the chance to have their name engraved on one of 3 historical perpetual trophies.

In the 190 boat Opti Gold Fleet, Ian Kent was our overall winner taking home the Jane Funsch Perpetual Trophy. SPYC’s Dorothy Mendelblatt finished 4th overall and also took home the Allison Jolly Trophy for the top girl. John Hartney finished in 14th place overall and was 1st place in the white fleet. CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB 17

by Rich Treinen

A

good club has two essential components - opportunities to do things you enjoy and great people who make the day enjoyable. The later is generally more important than the first. As a Wing Shooter you get both. Here are a few bits of information about the Wing Shooters. • Our monthly meetings are on the 2nd Thursday at 6 PM. We have organized shoots every Friday morning. • Fridays start with breakfast in the Club. It’s the best deal in town. We sit at one of the big round tables and if you get there late, you are stuck in a chair that looks straight into the rising sun. At 8, we carpool an hour or so to a local shooting establishment. • Sporting clays is the venue. It’s like golf with shotguns. A practiced and repeatable stance, grip, and swing are desired. We have water holes, too, and ride around in the same carts. For safety reasons, we will not see the young lady selling beer on the course. Having lunch at a nice place is a given. • We have an organized hunt every year. We don’t rough it. We go to nice hunting lodges with guides, dogs, thousands of acres and good cooks. It’s a multiday excursion to places within a day’s drive. The lodge has a base charge that includes 15 birds. It’s not hard to bag that in the first hour. Beyond 15 you pay for each bird. You soon learn these places have an unlimited supply of birds. A $5 box of shotgun shells can turn into $300 of extra quail that won’t fit in your condo freezer. You will bring the average cost per quail up and your total cost down if you are a lousy shot. One guy said, “I’m not driving 8 hours both ways for 15 birds.” His bill at the end of the hunt was awesome. • We have only one officer, the Grand Marshall. He doesn’t do much. He’s never elected. It’s closer to a desperate plea getting somebody to do it. A one-year commitment becomes two if you can’t badger somebody into taking your place. The spelling of Marshall with a double L is a sign of respect. You’d never know it if you went to one of our meetings. • Our average age is a sore point.

• There’s an unruly crowd in the bar on the 2nd Thursday starting about 5:30. As you approach, it will sound like a thicket full of cicadas. A few seconds before 6 we swarm down to the Quarterdeck room. • Our meetings are entertaining. Rowdy, low levels of decorum, and irreverent are descriptive. Every meeting has a joke. Not one of those jokes can be told here. No one is spared a bit of ridicule and no one gets offended. Any topic can spin out of control at any moment. We do not have rules. That explains why the minutes of our meeting are not accurate. This is where our Grand Marshall earns his double L. It’s a tough job. • When a prospective member attends a meeting, he usually gives Money Man his $50 dues before the meeting is over. Paying cash without a witness is not a good idea. • Nicknames are common. They arise from something you’ve done or for no reason at all. The guy known as Shotgun started this whole thing. Copper Head got his name for shooting his namesake. Tachi is some kind of Japanese sword and a nickname. Pointer is the guy whose dog stole a fresh quail off the tailgate and ate it whole; beak, feet and feathers. • Shotguns are just like Chevys and Fords. On average, a Wing Shooters owns more than ten. Every one of those guns is the best he has ever owned. It’s a useful selling point. If one particular guy quits, the average gun ownership will drop to around two. Our best shooters own only one shotgun. • As far as shooting skills are concerned, you need not have any. You’ll fit right in. You don’t even need a gun, the guy who started this club didn’t have one; you can borrow one too. When you are ready to get your own gun, fear not, every one of us has a gun we’d hate to part with. • There’s always that one member who ruins everything. Every club has one. Ours has not evidenced himself. He’s not stupid. • We have one event every year where camo is verboten. It’s our Holiday dinner and each member brings his better half. It’s also dangerous. Just one social faux pax at the Holiday dinner and our divorce lawyer introduces himself to your wife. • If you yearn for more information, like names, find a Wing Shooter at the bar. It might cost you 3 drinks. Your contact for the Wing Shooters Society is Grand Marshall Gene Collins. 727 385-4878 or genebcollins@hotmail.com

and future events. I hope that this will provide a forum for those interested in aviation to set out the future of our group. We would hope to include anyone interested in flying or aviation; there is no need to be an active pilot.

However, beginning in March,we will once again return to regular monthly meetings but this time under a different scheme. We will hold an informal gathering on the second Sunday of the month, (March 8th) beginning at 6pm in the Heritage Lounge for drinks followed by dinner in 1909 ( early birds can always find members at the Tiki) where we can informally discuss club matters, activities

Once again, I have taken to the skies after a layoff, which in reality requires beginning pilot training all over again, and folks, this is why you need to learn to fly when you’re young. SALTY SISTERS

Salty Tattos

Salyt Sister’s 1st Annual Cruise

by Carol Hansen

J

anuary proved to be an exciting and active month for the Salty Sisters. Co-Captain Els Wiemken finally was able to get the girls out on the water to start the annual Maggie Mug series. The weather conditions proved to be near perfect with six teams racing in Ideals. Skippering the six teams were: Diane Fowler, Nancy Kadau, Els Wiemken, Dee Gill, Sandy Ripberger, and Lori Leadbetter. The teams were able to complete three races with all the boats flying or trying to fly spinnakers. The final two races will be completed in February. On January 30th, 22 Salty Sisters embarked on a 4-day cruise to Mexico aboard the Royal Caribbean Brilliance of the Seas for the 1st Annual Salty Sister Cruise. They were accompanied by nine Briny Brothers and guests. From the time everyone boarded

Rosemary & Renee

until the private cocktail party on the last day at sea, everyone had a great time. Daily activities included a photo scavenger hunt, Zumba, dancing, rock climbing, puttputt golf, playing bridge, and other card games. We discovered that Renee Athey was our rock-climbing champion!!! On our day in Cozumel, the Salties set off in many directions, heading to all points of the island. Some went to the beach, some toured the island, and others just stayed in town and went shopping, most enjoying lunch and adult beverages at some local spots. Next year….stay tuned for the 2nd Annual Salty Sister Cruise!

BROAD

anuary can be a challenging month for small boat sailors. Just when the holidays are over and sailors look forward to getting back on the water, the weather proves too cold, or too windy — or both. The Broad Reachers entered February with high hopes for spending a lot more time on the water. With the Florida Women’s Sailing Association Rainbow Regatta scheduled for March 30, the months of February and March are packed with sailing practices, coaching sessions, and all of the other work that goes into getting our team ready to compete. The Broad Reachers have assembled a team of Debbie Walcutt, Angela Treinen, Katie Rodgers, and Judy Clap & Gwen Mann Kate Clardy. They have joined MARCH 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING

with sailors representing the Salty Sisters in a series of twice-aweek practices at Pass-A-Grille and the St. Pete Sailing Center, with J.P. Creignou and Charlie LaLanne coaching again this year. Finally, on February 8th four sailors enjoyed sunny yet, gusty winds and 60-degree weather for a fun day on the water. Gwen Mann, Joanne Simmons, Judy Clapp, and Charl Hadfield were among the Broad Reachers on the water that day. We invite everyone to come Saturday mornings through the end of March to watch our practices, and join us for Saturday fun sailing throughout the year. The video on “chipping” was one of our favorites. Jim Krause was a crowd pleaser in his explanation of the rule of the month. We “volunteered” him to do this presentation each month and he graciously accepted! Martin Morris opened the discussion about getting two drives from each player on a team. We decided to try our best but not to stress! Presented by Mary Lou Turgeon & Dick Mordaunt “Mongolia: The Land of Nomads, Yurts, and Ghengis Khan.” Mary Lou and Dick had a goal for their trip to Mongolia. They wanted to interact with vanishing nomads who descended from tribes formed by Ghengis Khan in the 13th century, and document the adventure through their hobby of photography. The couple will detail their visit to Ulaanbaatar - the capital city of 1 million people, a visit to the “Goat to Coat” cashmere factory, observation of two weddings that mixed ancient and modern traditions, and the grassy plains that support the traditional “nomadic” Mongolian herding lifestyle. They stayed in a yurt (ger) camp used by locals, ate Mongolian BBQ, and rode horses amidst yaks and marmots. Come experience their adventure through their amazing photographs and humorous anecdotes.

anuary and February were, once again, filled with events. January’s cruise-in to SPYC was coordinated by Port Cruising fleet kicking-off the weekend Directors Joy and Larry Wessing with a theme of “Winter Carnival”. The program was filled with evening docktails, dinner and afternoon of fun games. Who knew Tim Connelly was a professional gamer? We closed out the weekend with Coast Guard Auxiliary Inspections of our vessels. January 25th found our “Day Tripper” fleet at Frenchy’s Rockaway Grille in Clearwater. Although weather was iffy Barbara and Heber Weller managed to muster 18 cruisers for a lively lunch. From all reports the food was great and the company even greater! February’s luncheon is traditionally the Commodore’s briefing to the Fleet. Commodore Michael Blacker presented an informative discussion on SPYC status to 45 Cruisers followed by a lively question and answer session. Our club is in great shape and obviously well lead.

Port directors February Cruise

Finally, our February cruise to Marina Jacks (Feb 6 -9) started off with a little excitement. Mother Nature unloaded a winding front, which caused a cancellation of the planned anchoring out and shortened the cruise by one day. Undaunted, our Port Directors Kevin and Debra Hopper and Allen and Pam Thomas flexed to plan B and superbly rearranged the arrival of the Fleet and coordinated festivities for Saturday that included an art show, cocktails, and dinner at two great restaurants. Well done! Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Day Trippers Sunday Brunch PAG (Feb 23th) • March Dinner, Thursday March 5, 2020 • Day Tripper Corned Beef and Cabbage Luncheon PAG (Mar17th) • March Cruise, Venice YC (Mar 20-23)
