CHAPTER 7 2

COMMODORE’S LOG H

ello SPYC Members, Welcome to our double issue of Smooth Sailing for the months of May and June! It was nice for Commodog Sophie to give me a brief respite from these writing chores. I want to reassure all past and future Commodores

The improvements at our Pass-a-Grille Beach Club have been coming along nicely. By the time you read

that the Commodore’s hat in her picture was not sullied by actual K-9 contact, but was merely photo-shopped by yours truly. However, it did take me a while to get the paw prints and Milk Bone crumbs off of my keyboard, not to mention her fur. I’m surprised she had any left after cleaning out the scuppers on my boat. Speaking of boats, I can only surmise our members have been enjoying this banner Chamber of Commerce weather this spring; and the fishing has been outstanding! Thanks to the efforts of my son, Derek, we have enjoyed feasting on two forty pound black fin Tunas he caught a week or so apart. Fish eating does not get any better than sushi grade tuna, lightly seared with sesame. I get hungry just thinking about it. What a great time our sailors had on their race to Cuba, ushered along by a northeasterly breeze at 15-20 knots, with Fresh Pineapple, from the Southern Yacht Club, who set the new course record of 1:08:43:19, and took 3rd Place and Line Honors in this year’s St. Petersburg – Habana Race. Kudos to the entire crew of Silver Surfer for that historic downhill spinnaker run to Habana, and clenching 1st Place in their division. Nice going, Harvey & Tom!! In the words of the I Ching, perseverance furthers. Additional kudos to Johannes Vanderkrabben, Skipper of Woodland, for 1st Place in their class as well. Unlike previous years, the weather was just about ideal for the 26 boats, and 1 support boat, that reached Havana. I understand that no one went hungry on the night of the awards, and that a good time was had by all. Many thanks to the tireless efforts of our organizers, who are too numerous to mention. It is a huge undertaking, to say the least. The Club’s Facebook page had the race highlights from the first day with over 10,000 views! For details and list of winners please check out page 5 in this issue. The Thistle Midwinters East was held February 25 – March 1, with a beautiful breeze and plenty of sunshine. Look out for the July/August double issue with highlights from this year’s Winter Lightning Championship. Thistle results are online at https://yachtscoring.com/event_results_cumulative.cfm?eID=6190. The top three finishers are as follows, with congrats to all: 1. Matt Fisher, Wayne Pignolet & Sarah Paisley of Ohio 2. Craig Koschalk, Charlie Yingling & Lauren O’Hara of Ohio 3. Aaron Holland, Peter Hudson & Sarah Bonner of New York

this, the 30 day cure period for the concrete pool shell will be over and things will be moving swiftly. Past Commodore Klingel has been shepherding this project and it will be stunning when completed. We included the most recent picture we could and still meet deadline to keep you visually abreast of the progress. Can’t wait to see it holding water! A hearty thanks to our members for attending the Easter Brunch and accompanying festivities in April. And now, both Mother’s day and Father’s Day are fast approaching. Reservations for these two events can be conveniently made on-line at spyc.org or through your SPYC mobile app. Lastly, there is this little contest we have been holding, and the bottle of Dom Perignon, that GM Reydams and I are just going to have to drink by ourselves; if no one will take the effort to win it. In the last Log, Commodog Sophie was kind enough to let everyone know that the sign in the accompanying picture is located south of the downtown Club, and apparently that was not enough. So, here is another clue: If you draw an East-West line running through the Passa-Grille Club, the sign would be south of that line as well. Now the Pinellas County line is somewhere out there in the middle of Tampa Bay, and land mass is rather limited, especially when one recalls that the land mass must consist of an island, since the sign says “Island Crossing.” So do the math and be the winner! Have a great couple of months!

Jim Byrne, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. MAY & JUNE 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING

Pass-a-Grille will NOT have a shutdown this year and will be open Thursday through Monday during the downtown Club’s shutdown.

Please “excuse our dust” as we improve this area for our members, and note the following important dates:

Reservations can be made online at spyc.org or on your SPYC mobile app through the “Grille 1909”. SPYC JUNIOR

SAILING

ACTIVITIES by Todd Fedyszyn

T

he SPYC Junior Sailing Team was well represented in the Opti RWB Fleet at the Miami Sailing Week Regatta hosted by the Coconut Grove Sailing Club. Held in conjunction with the Bacardi Miami sailing week, 100 Opti’s and over 200 youth sailors competed on Biscayne Bay. SPYC Opti Sailors Cole Rogers, Rosie Simpson and John Hartney competed in a tough fleet with plenty of international talent. The High School sailing season is coming to a close with the SAISA South Points Series wrapping up in Mid March. SPYC was well represented this year with sailors competing for Osceola, Lakewood, St Pete and Shorecrest High Schools. Shorecrest

has had a good year and qualified for the district fleet racing Championships over Easter weekend. Both St Pete HS and Shorecrest competed in the District Girls Championships hosted by Jacksonville University. Shorecrest finished 5th overall in the Gold Fleet and St Pete HS finished 1st in the silver fleet. SPYC was also well represented at the Clearwater Youth Open with sailors competing in all three divisions. Bella Shakespeare took the top spot in the Opti RWB fleet and Preston Weaver took the win in the Laser Radials! SPYC Summer Sailing Camp registrations are coming in fast as it is shaping up to be another great summer! Be sure to get your sailors signed up so you don’t miss out on a spot. SALTWATER

ANGLERS by Captain Wayne Andrews

Get Ready For Summer Fishing! Wayne Andrews with a fat red Grouper

F

Wayne Andrews, Burt Bussey and Frank Diaz ollowing our April with the first of four kingfish meeting, a group of Saltwater Anglers made an offshore excursion on Wayne’s World. Our first stop was for loaded Pinfish traps, then off to ship channel makers for Sardines and Cigar Minnows. Next stop was some limestone bottom in 120’ of water. With chum and flat lines out hoping for a King or a Tuna, bottom fishing started slow. Drifting through the same area was the trick tuning up a half dozen fat Red Grouper. Trying something completely different, our next stops were some well-known wrecks. Approaching the wreck with deep diving plugs we quickly hooked into a large Kingfish and noticed a bait ball was under attack nearby. Nothing beats tightening up on a Tuna after an explosive attack on a topwater popper. Blackfin tuna exploded on a popping cork!

Coach Boat

Bert Bussey shows off his big kingfish, nice catch!

There is plenty of great fishing right here. Come join us for our regular meetings and we’ll make some plans to get out on the water. The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at one of our next meetings on May 8th and June 12th. **SAVE THE DATE** The Annual SPYC Saltwater Anglers Fishing Tournament at the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse is set for Saturday, October 26th. n the table we had venison, duck, quail, and wild boar in addition to the best ribs I’ve ever had, and then there was chicken, Alabama style collard greens, cheesy grits, and corn bread served straight from an iron pan. For those concerned about the health of the 34 Wing Shooters in attendance, we had many healthy choices on our plates too. To wet our appetites and fight off dietary remorse, fine beverages and premium cigars were

enjoyed by all. Nobody went home hungry or even close. Many went home with enough leftovers for a week. This year’s Wing Shooters Wild Game Feast was held at Joe Petrella’s home on March 14th. The culinary artists preparing our game included Jack Cartier, Gene Collins and Wayne Andrews. As a symbol of our appreciation, Joe received a fabulous beverage in a bottle. Thanks Joe, sorry about the mess.

The Wing Shooters Society meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday at 6:00 pm. Those wishing to join are encouraged to contact our Grand Marshal Gene Collins at 727-385-4878 or genebcollins@hotmail.com. MAY & JUNE 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING

ur riders have burst into Spring with a bang… or should we say Vroom! With two more local rides under our Our favorite place to meet for a ride, “Cracker Barrel” belts, we are ready for a longer trip. Key West here we come!! We will depart on Tuesday, April 16th and spend a total of 3 – 4 nights exploring Key West and Southern Florida. Our Dade City ride was a great success. Between great weather and those hills and winding roads Dade City is known for, it could not have been a better day.

25 Quick cup of coffee, then back on the road!

Bob Kline grabbed some friends and went on an impromptu ride to the On our way to Homosassa Homosassa Riverside Resort. We enjoyed lunch at the Monkey Bar, appropriately named from the featured view of Monkey Island. You may even catch sight of the resident monkeys swinging around the island. Our own Bart Franey is getting closer to a final decision on a motorcycle purchase. Bart gave us a quick update on his progress. “I’m getting closer to a decision. I recently test rode two Indians and am working on a test ride for the Honda F6B this month, as soon as I get that done I’ll be ready to make a decision.” We know Bart has had a great time test riding, and we look forward to riding with him and his new motorcycle soon.

ur outing for March was postponed because of rain, so we opted to play the Stoneybrook Heritage Harbour Golf Club in Bradenton on “April Fool’s Day”. There were no jokes or tricks and the results are true as reported! Our golfers were stellar in play, as many players hit the Par 3’s. However, Ron Brown managed to be the only one to get on the green on Hole #17. Jim Krause won the prize for the Straightest Drive. 1st Place - Ron Brown, Martin Morris, and Connie Smith with a score of 6 under. 2nd Place – Nydia Ballesteros, Karen Lieberman, Jack Pyhel, Joop Van Der Krabben.

Fair winds, the camaraderie of friends from other clubs, and a fantastic volunteer team of Broad Reachers, spouses and others made for a great day on the water for sailors and spectators. Thank you to Coach JP Creignou, Coach Boat Driver Jennifer Paramore, Nancy & John Dunn, Angela & Rich Treinan, Barbara Arnold, Charl Hadfield, Donna Pappa, Mary Moosbrugger, and Jeanette Erb for providing great support for sailors Debbie Walcutt and Marti Cochran.

3rd Place – Steve Hamblin, Chuck Mudd, Bill Prost, Annemiek Van Der Krabben. It was interesting, to note, that we were all glad to be on golf carts and not walking. This course logs about 9 miles long and often the green to the next tee is quite a ride. At our last golf meeting, Jack Howard played a video on “Putting”. We learned some helpful hints on how to keep the ball “on line“ and tips on how to practice the putting drill of lining two tees apart from each other; and then putting the ball through the opening to the hole. Thank you, Jack! After May, our Golf Group will have a summer break and play casually in town and away. arlier in March we recognized our 2018 FCYC Yachtsman of the Year and Founders Award Winners at the SPYC Yachting Recognition Awards Reception. Congratulations to all cruisers! Get working on those 2019 FCYC Cruising Logs! As we have done for the last few years, our March cruise (3/22-3/24) was a yacht club “swap” with Sarasota YC. This prearranged “swap” allowed us to accommodate 17 boats, while Sarasota invaded our Club with even more! Friday we enjoyed docktails on the patio before dinner in the Club, and Saturday we headed into St. Arman’s circle for dinner at a few different restaurants. A special thanks to our Port Directors Tim & Dianne Connolly who made all the arrangements for our large group and made it all so “illuminating”. March Port Directors Our hats are also off to the dockmasters Tim & Dianne Connolly at both locations!

Our regular “On the Air” radio net is every Monday at 5:30 pm. If you would like to observe our net in operation, there are several members with radios at PAG on the outside deck. We welcome all Club members to join us at our meeting, if you are interested in becoming a licensed Amateur Radio Operator …. we can help you! Study help online www.hamtestonline.com.
