CHAPTER SEVEN 2
COMMODORE’S LOG
A
s I take stock of the incredible impact this pandemic has had on our lives, my thoughts go immediately to those who have been affected by this disease and the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, and first responders on the front lines of the battle to keep us healthy. In times of despair, we are often reminded of how fortunate we truly are, and this time is no different. While many employees working in the hospitality industry have been hit hard by the state-mandated closure of restaurants and bars, our Club’s strong financial position and unwavering commitment to our employees has allowed our board of directors to provide financial support to our employees during this difficult time. Our employees are the foundation of our Club’s reputation for providing stellar hospitality, and we are lucky to have them. We have also used this time to undertake some light maintenance projects at the downtown Clubhouse, Pass-a-Grille, and the Sailing Center has been busy overhauling the sailing fleets to provide for a better overall member experience when we are able to fully reopen to our members and guests. As Commodore, I could not be prouder of the efforts our management team, employees, and Board of Directors have taken to help each other through these difficult times.
Looking back, I never thought my daily jargon would include terms like safer-at-home, PPE, and social distancing, but here I am adapting to our new normal. Through it all, I realize that more than anything, I’m thankful for my family and friends, my health, and my Club. I have to admit that lately, I often catch myself daydreaming of the day I can sit in the Heritage lounge with a Mount Gay Rum in my hand while chatting with fellow members. Until that day comes, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay positive.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Greetings Members; The past month and a half has definitely presented us with a different everyday “nomal.” However, we are extremely grateful for our members and employees ongoing support and postitive attitude, which helps the Club get through each day during this unprecedented time. A heartfelt Thank You to everyone who has, and continues to, order their daily meals from the Take-Out and Delivery options. Addtionally, I would like to say Thank You on behalf of all the SPYC Employees for the incredible and generous donations our members made towards the “SPYC Employee Fund.” The employees are truly grateful as this fund was able to help purchase Publix gift cards so that all employees could help feed their families. We understand that each of you are eagerly awaiting for your Club to reopen...as so are we. Management will continue to follow the direction of Federal, State and Local authorities regarding reopening procedures so that we can gradually reopen both clubhouses safely. ON THE WATER
YACHTING INFORMATION 10
COMMITTEE by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chair
The Commodores’Award is usually presented at the Annual
Yachting Recognition Awards ceremony, so in lieu of that, please read on as to why Commodore Michael Blacker made Past Commodore Jennings his choice. John Jennings was 18 years old when he won the Thistle Class National Championship in 1958; in the 70’s he twice won the US National Men’s Sailing Championship and twice won the US Match Racing Championship; in 2007, he won (for the fourth time) the Invitational Masters Championship on San Francisco Bay—an event open only to winners of major National and International championships; in 2016, in his seventh decade of competitive sailing, he won the Corinthian Division of the J70 Midwinter Championships sailed here in St. Petersburg. We honor him for more than his sailing achievements—we honor him for his contributions to young sailors at SPYC in their transition from Green Fleet to Collegiate, to All Americans and beyond, and for the role model he provided countless people in our sailing program. Ed Baird described John’s influence as this: “John was the guy we could go to that could guide us to what we needed in our sailing lives....
MAY 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING
He knew who to talk to about equipment, how to approach a new race venue, and how to deal with the ups and downs of racing.” [Ed, as you know, is a World Champion, winning America’s Cup Skipper and a 2016 inductee into the US Sailing Hall of Fame.] Allison Jolly [Olympic Gold Medalist and a 2019 inductee into the US Sailing Hall of Fame] tells us this about PC Jennings: “I learned from him how to prepare for events, from little things like having a properly equipped ditty bag onboard, to big things like leaving the dock early to check the wind and current. But the unspoken lesson was what he modeled, the Corinthian Spirit of our sport. A national champion, fierce competitor, but always a gentleman on the water. I think that is the essence of what he taught me.”
