COMMODORE’S LOG D
ear SPYC Members, As I write my first Commodore’s Log, I reflect back to 1980 when I was accepted for SPYC membership, never dreaming that I would have the humbling privilege and opportunity of taking over the helm of this most distinguished yacht club. My wife Mary and I had our first date at the Club; we spent weekends and holidays at the Club; and our boys, Chris and Bill, are Intermediate Club members. I have enjoyed many years serving on the Board of Directors, committee participation, chairing the Vintage Motor Classic, and have made many wonderful friends at this Club. The St. Petersburg Yacht Club is one of America’s Top Yacht Clubs, and is recognized around the world as a premier and historic Club. We enjoy being one of the largest member clubs with four outstanding locations, including the downtown St Petersburg clubhouse, our Pass-a-Grille Beach Club, the Snell Isle Marina, and our fantastic Sailing Center at Demens Landing.
The result of those decisions has kept the club in a superior position with a well-respected reputation, and is likely why we are experiencing such an unprecedented growth rate in membership and activities. I would like to extend a special “thank you” to the staff at all our locations for their hard work and dedication to our Club. Without their efforts, we would not have such a positive Yacht Club and Membership Experience. As I close this log, I would like to encourage members to participate in Club events and entertainment, Clubs with in the Club, and boating activities. Don’t forget these notable events this fall in addition to others listed in Smooth Sailing: Blessing of the Fleet ~ November 7th Commodore’s Ball ~ November 13th
The Club offers an outstanding variety of member participation activities, cruising opportunities, well maintained and beautiful properties, and SPYC is in very sound financial condition with no debt. As we continue this successful trend and work to enhance the Membership Experience, we celebrate and welcome a new Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Club officers, and our new Club Manager, Rhett J. Robicheaux.
Fair winds and calm seas,
Over the years, there have been times when difficult decisions had to be made affecting the operation and direction of this Club. I would like to extend a thank you and congratulations to all those members and leaders that served and volunteered their time making those decisions.
Bill Waters, Commodore
The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. NOVEMBER 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING

GENERAL MANAGER’S LOG 55
General Manager’s Log by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM
D
ear Members, As we settle into fall and the holidays fast approaching the weather in St. Petersburg becomes much more bearable, please remember all the outdoor options we have for dining and/or just getting out. With that said we still ask for your patience as staffing continues to be a challenge. We have hired some great new staff members which are still in the training mode but from what I am observing they are looking to become valuable additions to our team. We are looking forward to a very busy holiday season and closing of the year as the CDC is encouraging families to enjoy each other’s company especially those who are vaccinated. Last month I shared with you our new Service Mission Statement and now I’d like to share with you our Service Standards and Core Values:
Service Standards
˙We provide service excellence – We will impress our members
with the quality and timeliness of our services in a pleasant and friendly manner. ˙We are honest and straightforward – We will provide a genuine and consistent effort each day and we will act with honor and good will. ˙We will practice teamwork – We will search for opportunities to support our co-workers to create a seamless service flow. ˙We will value our members and employees – We will treat everyone we encounter as we wish to be treated, with integrity and respect. ˙We welcome innovation and change – We will encourage and support employee innovation, creativity, and adaptability to change.
Core Values
˙Accountability – Be responsible for your actions. ˙Integrity – Be honest with day-to-day activities and always do the right thing.
˙Leadership – Set the example and take the initiative at all levels in a
timely and decisive manner. ˙Communication – One-on-one/face-to-face. ˙Respect – Be cooperative by being sensitive to others needs . ˙Safety – Above all things, know your job and limitations; perform in a safe manner. Project Update: Pass-a-Grille renovation is complete and back open. If you haven’t visited yet you really need to go and see the improvements, they look great! Heritage Lounge Restrooms are finally completed this project took a little more time than we hoped for but no different than the Pass-a-Grille project. The restrooms look outstanding! Great job by the House and Grounds Committee and of course our own maintenance team lead by Steve Partridge. Survey results are in and have been tabulated. Now it’s time for the LongRange Planning Committee, Board and Management to get to work. Back in October your Long-Range Planning Committee, Board and
Management started the process of mining the data by reviewing the Clubs Core Values, Mission, Vision and Metrics which is the tool to measuring our success. Following this process, we met to get a full review of the survey results from the team at Club Benchmarking (the company that administered the survey). Membership will be receiving an executive summary of the survey results before long, as we want to be completely transparent in this process. October was very busy as we also held two other workshops back on October 22nd and 23rd. On the 22nd the Long-Range Planning Committee discussed the SWOT Analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, & threats) and initial strategic issues facing the Club. Followed by a Workshop (Board Orientation) with the Board and Management to gather critical input and review of the Club By-Laws and Governing Structure. We discussed Model Club Governance and Club Industry Trends. The Board was asked to do a Self-Evaluation prior to this meeting, and we reviewed the results of this in conjunction of hundreds of other Private Clubs. Moving forward the Long-Range Planning Committee will be meeting on November 20th with the Board and Management to review their recommendations regarding the SPYC’s Core Values, Mission, and Vision and discuss the SWOT Analysis and initial key strategic issues facing the Club. Membership will soon be receiving a letter soliciting participation in Focus Groups, which will be a crucial part of this process. This is where our facilitator Jack Sullivan gets to hear directly from our membership face-to-face. This will most likely consist of two days with several groups of 15 max at different time slots per day. This will take place between late November concluding in mid January. We will then have a couple more meetings with the Board, LongRange Planning Committee and Management to finalize an Action Plan to bring to the Membership in early March. In closing, I continue to see the enormous potential in this Club, with the Strategic Plan in process and new eye watching over the ship the future looks brighter than ever! Congratulations to the newly appointed Board Members as I look forward to working with each of you in making the St. Petersburg Yacht Club the best it can be. I look forward to meeting and seeing everyone at one of our various facilities in the coming months! Cheers,

TWILIGHT SERIES WRAP-UP by Gloria Davis,
A
Regatta Chair
nother “Twilight Series” wrapped up with a combined celebration of season winners and the St. Petersburg Sailing Association annual meeting.
The series began March 19th and ended with a recordbreaking, 18, Friday night races on August 27th. The Club J70s usually had their own start with separate courses, and starts, for spinnaker and cruising competitors – all before sunset. Although registration is not required to participate on Fridays, sailors that wish to be scored must register in “YachtScoring” and they must race in at least half of the races. For the third year, Matt Braun won 1st place in the J70 Class. A mixed team of mostly Salty Sisters placed second.
Winners - Spinnaker A: 1st - Cakewalk, Josh Wilus(DIYC), with 7 firsts 2nd - Gimmi Shelter, Meg and Lon Ethington(SPYC), with 5 firsts 3rd - TackTick, Dr Michael Siedlecki(SPYC), with 4 firsts Spinnaker B winner for the umpteenth time, Sight Seeing, Jim Lindsey(SPYC) in his J24, which he sails from and back to his home on most Fridays. Cruising Class had several qualifying boats: 1st - Cayennita, Antonio Sanpere(SPYC) 2nd - Last Tango, Daniel Dawson(SPYC) 3rd – Bumbugo, Penny Simone(SPSA), ask her about the boat name. NOVEMBER 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING
"Gimmi Shelter" crew with some Race Committee
The “Cutty Sark”, a Twilight perpetual trophy, will be engraved with the 1st place winners in all classes. The “Nancy Ammon” trophy is awarded to a person nominated by the competitors. This year it will have our Ocean Racing Chair, Selga Sakss, name placed on it. All winners were presented with flags detailing their win. This new trend will be presenting flags to PHRF class racers. They’re encouraged to “fly their colors.” We’re told it’s a fun sight from the Pier. So, if you can’t join the race, make a date for the Pier on a Friday night in the summer.
HISTORY ON THE REVEALED WATER 9
So, we’re kind of stuck in the Lobby Library… There are so many items of interest there and while “investigating” the history of the Royal Gaboon Regatta from last month, hidden treasures came to light—darling little carved wooden figurines. Please read on!
WINDMILL & STINKPOTTER KEEPER TPOPHIES
These figurines were made by the amazing wood carver Jonathan Jones who had a wood carving shop near the old Stick & Rudder bar across from the St. Petersburg Shipyard. Mr. Jones made these charming little statuettes for use as keeper trophies for several regattas such as the Royal Gaboon, the Gaboon Stinkpotter, the Thistle Midwinters, the Windmills, and the Speterfleeter. What, you ask, is the Speterfleeter?
SPETERFLEETER KEEPER TROPHIES
SPETERFLEETER REGATTA:
The Speterfleeter Regatta, established in 1950, was a Steeplechase competition for all size sail boats from ocean racers to prams held in conjunction with an “Unpredictable Log Race” and “Creepstakes” for power boaters. [Sounds very similar to the Royal Gaboon Race… only shorter.] Pram events included ladies racing in the Salty Sister event; men in the Briny Brothers race; and the “Battle of the Sexes” when they raced against each THISTLE MIDWINTERS EAST TROPHY other. A fun time was had by all! [Fun fact: DONATED BY THE GLOVER FAMILY
PC W.W. “Doc” Jennings commissioned Mr. Jones to make these little sailboat models [each having an engraved plaque on the transom] for the 1951 Founding Members of the Salty Sisters: Margie Peterson Mary Jane Misener Eleanor Ells Phyllis Sawyer Joey Powell Ruth Rifley June Schowe Joyce McEvoy Betty Jennings

PYC member - Tony Sanpere - was honored to carry the U.S. flag at this years Hansa World Championships which took place in Palermo; which is the regional capital of the island of Sicily. The opening ceremony took place on October 4th - 25 countries on 5 continents were represented, and Tony was the only one from North America. Tony's wife, Ellen, volunteered to carry the country name and walk in the parade. Alphabetically, they were last, but the host country Italy, followed them. The speeches were interminable, and then translated into English, with sweets and bubbly following. The Sanperes had a wonderful time!

O
ctober brings many things, the leaves start to change, pumpkin spice lattes are at its peak and a new Fleet Captain emerges. Yes, our October luncheon saw the exchange of the Cruising Fleet flag from the outgoing Fleet Captain (Willy Bain) to incoming (Kevin Cross). The Cruising Fleet Flag Transfer ceremony was emotional with sad goodbyes and encouraging hopes for the future. Willy & Caryn will be missed but not forgotten.
Our second cruise was to Twin Dolphins Marina and hosted by Port Directors Bob & Juli Frazee. It was a midweek cruise undertaken as a change of pace from our normal weekenders. The cruisers congregated at Mattison’s Riverwalk Grill on Tuesday for dinner and a large dose of comradery. They spent two days at this resort enjoying the resort amenities and excursions into town. From the talk, we who didn’t go missed a real fun cruise.
Cruising Fleet @ O'Brick's Irish Pub
Since our last update we have had two cruises to Tampa Y&CC and Twin Dolphins Marina. Tampa YC’s Port Directors were Tim & Dianne Connolly who Port Directors arranged for docktails on Ben & Chris Roddey’s 51’ Leopard motor cat, as well as a private room at the club for dinner.

RIDERS CLUB by Bob Frazee, President

ow that fall is here the days are getting cooler and more comfortable for riding. Several of our active riders have been up north for all or part of the summer and are just now coming back to Florida. Those of us who were here did manage to get a few rides in during the hot and often rainy summer months. One ride took us north on a roundabout route to Brooksville, where we had lunch at the Florida Cracker Kitchen, which specializeas in Southern American Cuisine. On another ride we headed south, and traveled mostly back roads East to Zolfo Springs, then North to Fort Meade, and West to Parrish,

where we had lunch at C&K Smokehouse, which is one of our favorite BBQ restaurants. We also had another opportunity to participate in an escort ride with the area chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Club. There were about 45 motorcycles, including 20 police motorcycles leading the procession from Clearwater to the Sarasota National Cemetery, where the deceased veteran was interred. We are planning to have more consistent weekly rides in the upcoming months and welcome any interested club members to join us. For more information about the Riders Club you can contact Bob Frazee at: bfrazee50@gmail.com OR call (315) 420-7114.

lanning a Wing Shooters Society quail hunt can make your hair fall out. Someone eventually succumbs to pressure and volunteers to do the job. We require a place that treats you well. The place also has to have good accommodations, food, dogs and guides. It usually takes a while to figure out where, when and how many are going. Like most things you just can’t make everybody happy. Some will not commit until they know where and when. After a considerable deliberation the place is picked, and then a target date is proposed. Actually getting a reservation is a multistep process. The place picked may not have enough openings on the target date. It may not have any openings. All our time spent haggling about where to hunt and when to hunt was wasted.
In the end it always works out. The organizer, under pressure to find something, picks the place and date he wants with whatever openings are available. Once announced you need to get your deposit in quick or risk staying home. This year’s hunt is March 8 - 10 at Boggy Pond Plantation near Moultrie Georgia. It’s considered a rustic place that meets the specs and definitely not a place a spouse would enjoy. Our thanks to Frank Robinson for planning the trip. Remarkably, he still has a full head of hair. n September the Golf Group was 26 strong on a lovely sunny day at the Vinoy Golf Club, while enjoying the beautiful flowering beds, colorful birds, wildlife, and manicured course. Connie Smith sponsored this outing with tee time starts ending with a private lunch on the verandah overlooking the course. Welcome to two new members who joined us this month: Sandy Curry and Melanie Clem. Our October 5th Golf Group meeting at the Club was special with a visit from Fred Curtis, Director of Golf at Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club. He shared interesting stories and golf tips. We have a scheduled outing at his Club on October 17th with results to follow in another issue.
