The 9th Annual Saint Petersburg

CLASSIC

REGATTA A

by Gloria Davis

ll races are at their best with good weather, lots of participants, and great vittles. The Classic Regatta had it all: 10-12 knots under some clouds, 36 boats and vittles – constant flowing beer, divine spectator noshes, great breakfast buffet, and an outstanding celebration dinner. This charity race has always invited Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, Cruising, and a non-racing FUN classes all at least 20 years old. This year was the first time for motor boats, and much like the FUN class, participated in “show and tell.” Most boats docked at our Club and were able to mingle, and be judged, by the Race Committee for categories such as beauty (of course), stylishness, originality and other novel criteria devised by the RC & sponsors. We provided a less stressful “pursuit” race format. The starting line was limited to only boats with similar handicaps. The faster boats crossed the starting line well over 30 minutes after the first starter.

5

The WINNERS: Spinnaker 1st – Grant Dumas, SPYC, ”Warrior” 2nd – Lon Ethington, SPYC, “pigs with no purpose” 3rd – Ritch Riddle, Safety Harbour, “edgar” Non-Spinnaker 1st – John Archard, SPSA ,” Mudlark” 2nd – Richard Carlson, SPSA, “Because” 3rd – Steve Shortt, SPSA, “Hula Girl” Cruises 1st - Charles Mixon, Sarasota, “Red Sky” 2nd- David Wilson, Sarasota, “Solitude” 3rd – Christopher Brown, SPYC, “sleeper” Each competitor was challenged to gather the most funds for “Neighborly Care Network”, the Meals on Wheels charity that originated in St. Petersburg supplying meals to folks unable to prepare their own. Al Lima, DIYC, ”Jade” contributed the most and will be cited on the perpetual trophy. Our competitors and sponsors: Raymarine, Yanmar, SeaHawk, Elite Marine, Embree Marine, Sacino’s and American Spirit contributed over $20,000 this year. In this 9th year, we are close to reaching an all-time total of $100,000. Plan on enrolling that 20 year-old vessel next year and enjoy this great event!

SPYC JUNIOR

SAILING

ACTIVITIES by Todd Fedyszyn

S

PYC hosted the annual Bruce Watters Green Fleet Regatta on September 15th & 16th. 45 boats were in attendance from up and down the west coast of Florida. Adam Mendelblatt sailed a great regatta taking home the title and was closely followed by Sophia Fuller in 2nd place also taking home the top girl prize. Andrei Imensek finished in 4th, Reese Ellis 5th, Ryder Ellis 8th and Reid Mendelblatt in 10th. Also competing were Cole Rogers, Wesley Wood, Sean Silverthorne, Finn Cox, Thomas Guillford, Jad Abedraddo, Bennett Lamb, Leah Abrams, and Charlie Reynolds. On October 6th and 7th the SPYC Junior Racing Team travelled to Atlanta to compete in the USODA Southeast Championship on Lake Lanier. Sailors were greeted by light winds and shifty

NOVEMBER 2018 | SMOOTH SAILING

conditions. Our SPYC sailors showed they were ready to keep their heads out of their boats focusing on finding pressure and shifts. Kate Danielson was our top performer finishing in 2nd place overall, 1st in blue fleet & 1st girl. Following Kate was John Hartney in 11th overall & 3rd in white, Peyton Weaver 17th, Callen Burnett 20th, Jack Carter 21st, Rosie Simpson 26th and Ava Shakespeare in 43rd. Big congratulations to John, Peyton, Callen and Rosie in qualifying for the 2019 USODA Team Trials Regatta in Marina Del Rey California next April. Over the same weekend SPYC’s Sidney Moyer travelled to Newport Rhode Island to compete in the USODA New England Championship. With a weak cold front and light winds a ton of current sailors were cautious not to get stuck on the wrong side of the course. Sidney did a great job of managing her position and was able to finish 55th overall in the fleet of 210 boats.

YACHTING INFORMATION by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chairperson

e have now closed the 2017-2018 fiscal year at the Yacht Club. This year the committee supported impactful projects within our Club and our sailing community. Barbara Watson spearheaded the Ray Kendall Williams photo collection 1930-1957 book, which was published and offered to our membership. We hope in the upcoming year to offer this in a digital format for the rest of the sailing world to enjoy. A big round of applause to Barbara as our Club Historian! After almost 10 years in this role she continues to make meaningful and lasting contributions. Trisha Birkenstock led the team of volunteers for the Yachting Recognition Awards held earlier this year. The event starts in

the fall with a “Call to Nominations”. This call for nominations is open to every Club member. If you know of a member that has been a good ambassador for the Club in a sailing, yachting, powerboat, volunteer, committee and or all around civic-minded, community driven role, please nominate them. The Nominating Committee wants to hear from you. We’ve recognized close to 100 individuals last year. With a membership of almost 2,000 I know there are more members out there going about doing good works for the Club. Nominate them by reaching out to Trisha at trishab@tampabay.rr.com. Deadline to submit your nominations is January 2, 2019.

nother great cruising year winds up soon, and I’m proud to provide continuity as your Fleet Captain again for the coming year. We had a lot of interesting experiences this year, and we expect to “weather” more of the same. For example, while we avoided the Red Tide down in the southern counties in August, we managed to dodge it here for our September cruise to Tampa Yacht Club (9/21-9/23). A few boats made the trip, and several by car, to enjoy the festivities including a fun scavenger hunt. Thank you to our Port Directors Barbara & Heber Weller for coordinating and planning the September Port Directors Barbara & Heber Weller Tampa heritage themed weekend.

e enjoyed our first outing of the fall season at the Renaissance Vinoy Golf Club on September 11th. Although St. Pete had experienced much rain in the previous weeks and days, we ventured out but, with a “cart path only” rule. Trying to avoid casual water and muddy areas, we often had to “lift, clean, and place” our ball. The comradery was great and the venue was picturesque. After our scramble round we feasted on a delightful menu and refreshing adult beverages on the terrace at the Golf Grill.

and Herb Anderson. The four Par 3 closest to the pins was won by Theresa Matthews, Dawn Eckhart, Guy Anderson, and Carlton Turner. The straightest drive was had by Jeff Sherman with only 14 inches from the line. A special thanks goes to Nydia Ballesteros, who as a Vinoy member helped to arrange this golf date.

Coming in first place with a score of even were Susan Arsenault, Guy Anderson, and Jim Krause who happens to be our newest golf member! In second place with a match of cards and a score of +1 was Carlton Turner, Nydia Ballesteros, Dick Vazzano,

As you can see, we are a fun group and travel to some interesting courses. We invite all Yacht Club members who enjoy golfing to try our Club Within a Club. If you are interested, contact Susan Arsenault at sueaatcp@aol.com.
