FINAL CHAPTER 2
COMMODORE’S LOG H
ello Club members one and all…we have finally arrived! Summer is officially over, the Annual Meeting and election of Club officers is just days away, and I have but this one last Commodore’s Log to bloviate with you. This year’s Annual Meeting/Election is on Tuesday, October 8th. Voting starts at 11:30 am in the Quarterdeck Room for the following candidates (meeting will begin at 7:45 pm): ACTIVE: Grant Dumas, Christopher Fraser, Jim Henderson, Fred Higham, Jeannie O’Grady, George Pennington, Will Reed & Barbara Weller INTERMEDIATES: Veronica Hickey & Rachael Russell I wish to give a big shout out to the Sailing Center for their success this summer with their attendance record-breaking summer camp programs which just keep getting better and better. I am very pleased to announce that the City of St. Petersburg is willing to execute a 20year lease with the Club for the Sailing Center, which will enable the Club to host significant new events in the future and better plan for capital improvements. A lease of waterfront property of this magnitude requires a city-wide referendum and approval of a majority of the voters. Please make it a point to show up and vote in favor of the referendum on Election Day this coming November. Studies show at least 30% of the voters vote “no” regardless of the issue, so please get out there and vote “yes!” To our new members of Downtown and Pass-a-Grille, be on the lookout for special invites in your E-mail from Membership in the next few months for some upcoming events we have planned especially for you! Other events you don’t want to miss include Dueling Pianos, Family Halloween Carnival, Annual Blessing of the Fleet & Jazz Brunch, 18th Annual Vintage Motor Classic, this year’s Commodore’s Ball, and a Thanksgiving feast prepared at both Clubhouses. Some upcoming regattas include the Ted Irwin/Fall Bay Race on October 12th and our annual SPYC Club Championships on October 19th. I must say, as we bring this fiscal year to its close, it has been a lot more than just an honor and a privilege to have served as Commodore, and I would like to thank each and every one of you and especially my lovely wife, Jennifer, for your support and for taking the time to read these
missives. It certainly took a lot of time serving as Commodore and a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. It was also gratifying to gain some insight to the inner machinations of Club governance, applying oil to certain gears now and then; but more than that, it was like becoming a member of a family. I have been fortunate to become better acquainted with many fine and wonderful people. I’ve witnessed the coming together of members and staff alike in both celebration and adversity to form a union of sorts that is far greater than the sum of its parts. We are all truly blessed to be here together. God bless this Club and each and every one of its members and staff. Lastly, allow me to quell the rampant rumors concerning a pending amendment to the By-laws that would create a new K-9 Club membership category. The scheme had apparently been hatched late one night at the Tiki Bar in an effort to draft Sophie, the Commodog, into a newly created position on the Flag as the permanent spokesdog and henceforth perpetual author of the Commodore’s Log. I know a few future commodores who were very much in favor of the idea. I have posted one last picture of Sophie’s reaction to this proposal. I’ve never seen such expressive non-verbal communication from such an engaging four-legged author, in answer to this proposal. As far as the Commodore’s Mad Hatter’s Ball goes, at least some of the rumors out there are true. See you at the Ball!
Commodore Jim Byrne

T
he National Sailing Hall of Fame released the Class of 2019 Hall of Fame Inductees. SPYC is proud to congratulate Allison Blair Jolly the 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist as an inductee. Allison hails from St. Petersburg and sailed in our SPYC Junior Program. She continued to sail and was an All American Sailor at Florida State University. She won the Women’s Collegiate National Championship 1975 and 1976, and has been the Yachtswoman of the Year twice. Once in 1976 after winning the Adams Cup and again along with Lynne Jewell, her crew, after the Olympics in 1988.
Allison Jolly and Lynne Jewell were not only the first women to win a Gold Medal in Sailing for the United States in the 1988 Olympics, they were the first women to win a Gold Medal in sailing in the modern Olympic Games dating back to 1896. Quite an accomplishment and one we are proud of both Skipper Allison and Crew Lynne.

Allison has a long list of sailing achievements and continues to compete competitively. She was recently inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in Sailing in 2016. Allison is the Head Coach for the University of South Florida Sailing Team since 2004 and supports the growth of development of those sailors on and off the water. We are proud of Allison’s recent nomination and induction into the National Sailing Hall of Fame Class of 2019. To read more about the National Sailing Hall of Fame visit www.nshof.org.

SAILING CENTER 6
REFERENDUM
A
century ago, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club formalized our commitment to youth sailing by founding the St. Petersburg Junior Yacht Club. Originally located at the Club’s downtown marina, the Junior Yacht Club was moved over to Demens Landing (formerly called the “South Mole”) in the 1940’s, until the property was purchased by the City in the mid-1970’s. It was then that the City built a brand-new Sailing Center and entered into a 5-year agreement with the Club to operate the facility and sailing programs. Since then, the Sailing Center has remained an integral part of downtown’s vibrant waterfront, providing access to sailboat rentals, youth sailing programs, and a first-class facility to host regattas, classes, and other educational programs.
Because of the facility’s location on the waterfront, we are currently limited to a maximum 5-year term on the lease, per the City Charter. As you can imagine, being limited to such a short lease term discourages investment in facility upgrades/ improvements and stifles the planned growth of our existing educational programs. In August, St. Petersburg City Council voted unanimously to approve a ballot referendum item giving the voters the opportunity to extend the Sailing Center lease from 5-years, to 20-years. This is an excellent opportunity for the Club to ensure the Sailing Center facility and programs are protected for decades to come, so if you are a St. Pete resident and are registered to vote, please remember to vote “YES.”
For more information on the referendum, please visit www.sailstpete.org/referendum.
BONE ISLAND T
Regatta
he 10th Annual Bone Island Regatta, Race to Key West, held this past May- 2019, may have been the best sailing conditions the regatta has ever had. Wind speeds varied from 0-20 knots throughout the race, with wind directions constantly changing. This made for constant sail adjustments, keeping the sailing crews busy with the changing conditions. This year all entries finished under sail with the exception of one vessel which had to power her way out of a shrimp boat fleet trawling at night. Bone Island shore events were top notch, as Key West venues have much to offer. Key West is always a popular destination for sailors. Also new in 2019, a “FUN” class was started, this class avoids a sometimes difficult sail up the Northwest channel, and promises to be more popular in the future. OCTOBER 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING
First overall went to Ron Kinney and Crew (Holanda Manzano SPYC, Robert Hopkins SPYC, Josh Willus DIYC, Tony Hooper DIYC), on Mi Sueño from St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Ron Kinney and Crew also took First in the Spinnaker Class… Congratulations!! The Crew of Mi Sueño would like to invite other boats from the Tampa Bay area to enjoy this wonderful race to Key West. If enough boats from the Tampa Bay area participate, there will be a likelihood of a start being positioned just inside Egmont Key for Tampa Bay sailors.

SALTY

T
he summer months continued to be busy for the Salty Sisters with belly dancing lessons, pool parties at St. Petersburg Country Club, and at the newly completed pool at our Beach Club! During the last two weeks of August, Co-Captain Kathy Ahern invited Zach Oppenheim from Eckerd College to conduct two power boating classes. The first class focused on managing, docking, safety, and righting overturned boats. Zach included several types of drills to hone our skills for managing the boats around marks. The second week, the Salties headed out into the bay to practice turns and getting the boats up on a plane. Then, when, White boat died, Gina Bowden-Pierce learned how to tow a powerboat attached to the side of another boat. A total of 19 Salties attended these classes. This event was so successful, we plan on doing it again next year!
September 11th was the Annual Welcome Back Party for the Salty Sisters with a Hawaiian Luau theme. Farley Compton provided a variety of music for the party and had the Salties up on the dance floor rocking & rolling, hula dancing, and even a conga line. Lunch consisted of a roasted pig and some very delicious tropical dishes. Sailing season is just around the corner with the Edie Pace Memorial Race staring the lineup.

road Reacher’s Race Captain Charl Hadfield met with her event committee and planned a very busy schedule for the upcoming year. We will be doing a lot of racing, sailing for fun, and learning sailing tactics in preparation for next year’s Rainbow Regatta.
Commodore Lucas Trophy
Our first big event will be the 48th Annual Commodore Lucas Invitational Ladies Pram Regatta. The Commodore Lucas Trophy was presented by Commodore John S. Lucas in 1972 to the Broad Reachers of the Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club to promote yacht racing between female sailing groups in the Tampa OCTOBER 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING
Bay, area and to encourage proficiency in seamanship, good sportsmanship, and outstanding proficiency in the sport. The Deed of Gift states that “Eligibility shall be by invitation to the selected organized women’s sailing groups.” This regatta consists of a round-robin series of five races held in Prams. Spencer Lucas will be on hand to present this year’s trophy to the winner. The Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us in Pass-A-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. There is no such thing as “too little” experience to join the Broad Reachers. We’ll help you learn and have fun doing it! Our Saturday morning sails are usually followed by lunch at the club. ur 2019 – 2020 program season opener started with a huge laugh – literally. Our “Comedy Club Extraordinaire” with Juanita Lolita was truly a blast. Pictures were not available at press time but will follow; even the décor was funny!! What a wonderful way to kick off the new season.
Lunch will be a choice of a Burger and Fries or Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad. Make your reservation by Friday, October 18th -- call the Beach Club (727) 360-1646 or email kerrie@spyc.org. Let the Club know if you have special dietary needs when you make your reservation.
Brenda Griffin, native Floridian, will make our October 21st meeting memorable – she’s been glass painting for 25 years, teaching 23 years and sells an array of product at Mermosa in downtown St. Pete and Paradise Gifts on Corey Avenue. Using acrylic paints for glass, you will create a lovely palm tree and sun on glass then take it home, let it cure for 24 hours and bake it. And voila, you will have a gift for yourself or someone special! She’ll also have product at the meeting to sell.
February 3rd will be our Annual Mah Jongg Tournament. Don’t worry – there is still time to learn. Send me an email at patsywarmack@tampabay.rr.com and I’ll arrange lessons for you. We play every Monday at 1:00 pm but come early and have lunch.

ack in 2012, it was a charity shoot that germinated the Wing Shooters. Commodore Sandy Schoenberg received a call for a SPYC team to participate in a charity event at the Tampa Bay Sporting Clays Club. He was not a shotgun shooter, but he knew members who were. A few calls later Sandy had three experienced shooters on his team; Robert Birkenstock, John Bowman, and John Hanner. Sandy and his friends had a great time and began shooting together regularly. Others found out and wanted to join in. Shortly thereafter the Wing Shooters Society was formed.
The LBC is all about having fun so come join us!! Membership forms are available at SPYC.org or, call/email Membership Chair, Cheryl Lanfear, 512-264-5542 or mclanfear@yahoo.com to join or renew. It’s $30.00 annually and worth every penny! PAG Club ONLY members are eligible to join the Ladies Beach Club!!
1st Place Team at the Neuro Challenge: Fred Bickly, Jim Montgomery, Breck Amick & Breck’s cousin Ed “The Ringer” Welch.
Charity shoots continue to be an activity of our club. Last year 4 teams, comprised of 15 Wing Shooters and a ringer, entered the charity shoot for the Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinsons. What could be more enticing than going to a nice gun club with your friends, shooting your favorite gun, meeting a bunch of great people, having a nice lunch, and driving back home with a warm feeling in your heart because you helped raise a bunch of money for a worthy cause? It was a good day for the Wing Shooters, we brought home the 1st, 4th, 5th and 12th place team honors.

n August, we had our Ad-hoc cruise to Longboat Key Moorings (8/23-8/25). Our Port Directors Ken & Corrine St. Jean arranged a delightful weekend for our cruisers. On Friday, after docktails, cruisers dined on property at Portofino. On Saturday, some enjoyed cooling off in the pool and later strolled around in St. Armand’s Circle before meeting up with others for dinner at both The Shore and Columbia. We always enjoy visits to the Sarasota area. Thanks to the St. Jean’s for coordinating the weekend, and to everyone who made the trip! Cruising Fleet at the Columbia

RIDERS CLUB by Bob Kline
F
rom January – July, 31st Tampa received almost 37 inches of rain. Our Riders were cautious and on occasion opted to wait for safer dry roads before venturing out on leisurely local rides. Bart Franey is ready to assist Bob Kline in the search for an Indian motorcycle that Bob can keep in North Carolina. Bart is on board for this endeavor, as he enjoys visiting Indian shops and spending a day riding his new Indian. Bart found this 2017 Indian Chief Vintage for sale in St. Petersburg and would love to see Bob ride out on it.

These safety tips keep our Riders and other vehicles safe while sharing roadways: • Be visible • Wear motorcycle gear in bright colors • Be defensive, (60 % of motorcycle accidents are the fault of the auto driver) • Watch for road hazards • Never ride tired! • Wear a helmet • Always keep at least a 20ft cushion between you and fellow riders • Leave room for an escape route, watch your rearview mirror at stop lights • Be wary of semi-trucks and the blind spots they create for drivers • Take an advanced riding course Our Riders were quick to refer Bob to a great bar and restaurant at the halfway point of his drive, in South Carolina, called Skynard’s Grill & Sports Bar. Offering pub-grub and live music, they are a favorite for local and traveling bikers. Join our next meeting at 6:15 pm on October 15th at the downtown Club….Let’s Ride!
