CHAPTER 5 2
COMMODORE’S LOG W
indy weather and contests galore, spring training, fast cars, Kingfish, St. Paddy’s Day and more! Welcome to March, the month that comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Or in our case, you might need a sweater on March 1st, with chances you’ve felt some sunburn by the 31st, if not beforehand. It is great to be a member of a Club with downtown St. Petersburg parking in the Spring. As predicted, the Valentine’s Regatta turned out to be a resounding success. Congratulations to all the youthful sailors who participated. While we are in recognition mode, congratulations to Tom and Barbara Farquhar for being awarded the prestigious Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy by US Sailing for their significant contributions to the sport of sailing. SPYC monthly events begin with a Youth Ice Cream Social on March 3rd. SPYC parents are cordially invited to bring their youth for a meet and greet with our Club’s General Manager, Marc Reydams and Entertainment Committee Members. They would like to hear from the SPYC Youth on what sort of events they want to see happen at their Club. Following on March 15th is the Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony. In this ceremony we recognize members who represent the Club, and its burgee, in sailing contests on the local, regional and world stage. The prestige these sailors earn for the Club cannot be bought. This ceremony is an opportunity for the rest of us to honor and show appreciation for their contribution to the sport. If you have not downloaded the new SPYC mobile app on your phone, you owe it to yourself to do so. Features include checking on upcoming events, member directory, access to check your member account, plus it’s easy as pie to book lunch, dinner, and event reservations….a lot quicker than having to make a phone call -- and you don’t have to wait for business hours to do it. Truly a welcome benefit for those on the go. I am pleased to report on developments at the PAG Club. The parking lot where the Page house used to be (henceforth, the “North Lot”) is fairly complete, with striping and parking stops in place. Many will find the North Lot to afford surprisingly convenient access to the Clubhouse, so try it before judging. I am fairly certain that by the time you read this, the hole will be dug for the pool. Recently, an outline of the pool was created with a can of spray paint. By the time I saw it, a lot of it
had faded. Nonetheless, I snapped a picture of it and enhanced it with an Apple pencil. I should caution you that pictures can be a bit misleading, but ask that you use your imagination and understand that it will be bigger than it looks with plenty of built-in seating. Speaking of PAG, most members do not realize what a gem this facility truly is. The staff is lovely, the food and service is great, the atmosphere is relaxing and the dog-friendly alfresco dining is unparalleled in Pinellas County. Here is a picture of Commodog Sophie receiving the royal treatment from our friendly expert servers, Brittany and Andy, who are truly a delight. A few members have recently asked, why the dog pictures? The answer is…I don’t have any cat photos, they are fun, and they take up space so I don’t have to write so much. Any more questions? *P.S. The dog really isn’t eating at the table. This is just a gag photo and the Pouilly-Fuissé is mine.* “Commodore’s Contest!” with so many contests this month, I got caught up in the spirit of competition and could not help but add a brand new one. The photo to the right is a location in Pinellas County. The first member who can give me the waypoint (Lat. & Lon.) to this spot, in writing, receives a bottle of Dom Perignon, courtesy of our esteemed General Manager, who always relishes a good contest! You can find my contact info on the Club’s mobile app. Someone, please win the bottle so I can join you. Happy hunting and have a great month!
Jim Byrne, Commodore

MEMBERSHIP HIGHLIGHT 4
DID YOU KNOW? Membership Initiation Fee Discounts T
here are many ways to recommend someone for membership and bring in the people with whom you have things in common. Perhaps you live in the same condo, work at the same office, or you are the members of the same organization? The St. Petersburg Yacht Club currently has a Group Initiation Fee Discount on membership, which is available to a minimum of three (3) individuals applying at the same time who belong to an association, organization, business or who have like interests. The Initiation Fee (discount) is $4,000 per member (minimum of three), with annual dues paid by each individual member. The SPYC application process applies to each member. Do you know someone 35 years of age or younger? There are a variety of initiation fees and a dues structure for Intermediate Membership – starting as young as 18 years of age! (Dues go up incrementally until they reach 35.) One of the most popular memberships is the Legacy Membership. If you have members of your immediate family who are interested in membership, instead of paying the full initiation fee (for their particular age category) the initiation fee is 50% off that prevailing rate. So, if your parents are wanting to join, your brother or your sister, there is a large discount waiting for them, once you invite them to be members.

VALENTINE’S DAY
REGATTA by Todd Fedyszyn
2019
SPYC Junior Sailor, Bella Shakespeare, was awarded as the top Gold Fleet Female Sailor
Sailors Racing on Tampa Bay
O
ver the weekend of February 9-10, SPYC hosted its annual USODA Valentines Day Regatta. This year’s event attracted just over 270 sailors sailing on three courses. 160 sailors competed in the highly competitive Opti Gold Fleet, 74 sailors raced on the silver fleet course, and 34 laser sailors were on the laser line.
SPYC’s top finisher this year was Bella Shakespeare who finished in 4th place overall in the Opti Gold Fleet and was also the top female overall. Sidney Moyer, Kate Danielson, and John Hartney also all finished in the top 35. On the Laser Course, Guthrie Braun and Heather Kerns finished in 2nd and 3rd in the Laser Radial Division, and Logan Rimel finished 3rd in the Laser 4.7. In the Opti Silver Fleet Adam Mendelblatt, Andrei Imensek, Reese Elleis, Ryder Ellis, Reid Mendelblatt, Luke Dluzneski and Cole Rogers all cracked the top 20.
All up this year, SPYC was represented by 11 Opti Gold Fleet sailors, 16 Opti Silver Fleet sailors, 13 Laser Sailors and 5 exchange sailors from San Diego. This is the biggest participation in recent memory for the SPYC Junior Sailing Team. Things are looking extremely bright for the years to come! Lastly, all our volunteers both shore side and on the water need a big thank you. With just over 70 on the water volunteers and over 50 on shore, we could not pull off an event like this without their help! Great job by an outstanding SPYC team!

he Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy is US Sailing’s most prestigious award. It was donated in 1957 by the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association, and is awarded annually to an individual(s) who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport of sailing in this country in any associated activity. The recipient is selected by the Board of Directors from nominations made by members of the Board, Division and Committee Chairs, past Presidents and Counselors of Honor. MID-JANUARY J/FEST 2019 by Kathy Ahern
S
PYC welcomed for the second year the “BIG J Boats to compete in the Mid-January J/Fest Regatta. Maybe the cold north or lure of Florida sunshine brought J/111 and J/88 competitors from Connecticut, Colorado, New York, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia. This is a regatta that SPYC hopes to build and continue annually. The Regatta was a scheduled 3-day event from January 25-27th with the competitors opting to store their boats in Florida, and all competing in the St. Petersburg NOOD Regatta (which took place last month). The top J/111 winner was Rob Ruhlman in Spaceman Spiff (Ohio) and J/88 Mike Bruno in Wings (New York). (Photos Courtesy of Phil Pape Photography)

ack in early 2013, under Commodore Sandy Schoenberg, the dominant activity of the Wing Shooters Society was trips to nearby shooting clubs. With each outing camaraderie developed and in short order everyone got tagged with a nickname related to a habit, an event, or some other quirky thing. John Hanner was stuck with Pull because he said “pull” before he was ready to shoot. He did this because he wanted to see the flight path of targets before shooting at them. Robert Birkenstock got tagged Rabbit because he could not hit those targets that rolled across the ground; Rabbit still has trouble with rabbits. Joe “Joey Longshot” Klingel because he could hit the distance targets that troubled everyone else. In fact Joey Longshot would stand near the shooting station with his gun ready. If someone missed, Joe was ready to blast the clay before it disappeared into the woods. And Sandy, the guy that didn’t own a shotgun, became Shotgun. By mid-year in 2013 word got out about all the fun these guys were having and more shooters came out of the Yacht Club woodwork. Sandy remembers Ed Wilson joining, “Ed had a lot of shotguns and for me that meant two.” Ed was christened Lightning because he’s from Kentucky where the backwoods folks produce a beverage called “white lightning”. Jerry “Pointer “ Colletti got his nickname because his hunting dog, Gus, swiped a freshly caught quail off the tailgate and ate it whole; yes sir the whole bird! Pointer watched Gus closely for a few days, no bird parts or ill effects were observed. Robert Fillingham became Honest Bob because he sold boats. Tachi, a long sword of a Samari, was put on Carl Hall for no other reason than…he needed a nickname. Cheap Ammo became Robert Teasley’s calling card because he was always on the lookout for good deals and alerted everyone when a deal was found. Tom Hatten became Single Barrel since he was that guy
whose gun wasn’t a double barrel. Battue was John Worlin’s call sign because that was his favorite type of sporting clays target.
Friday Morning Shoot at Sarasota Sporting Clays January 11, 2019
It’s easy to see why the Wing Shooters Society is a fun group. New members are welcome regardless of shooting skills. Some of our members had never shot previously; one guy still doesn’t own a gun. If you want to have a good time and shoot a shotgun, we are your group. We meet at 6:00 pm on the second Thursday of every month for an informal meeting and dinner. We shoot clay targets most Friday mornings as well as a few charity shoots and occasional hunting trips. Like minded SPYC members wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Gene Collins, our Grand Marshall at 727-385-4878 or genebcollins@hotmail.com.

e’re very proud to have a new Skipper’s Hat in the Salty Sisters!! Janet Walker announced that Dee Gill is now officially a Salty Sister Skipper’s Hat. Dee joined the Class of 2014 with no sailing experience, thus she has a whole lot of people in the Salty Sisters to thank for her education and training. Congratulations Dee!!! RIDERS CLUB by Bob Kline
S
ometimes, even the best made plans can suddenly change, but our Riders are nothing but adaptable. When an unexpected dead battery delayed our departure to Sebring, our Riders made a quick route change and headed to Woody’s River Roo Restaurant in Ellenton. Although they had not yet opened for the day, the friendly staff served up some hot coffee to a couple of chilled riders. There we laid out a shorter ride plan, and looked forward to our riding companion ‘catching up’ after seeing to that battery replacement. The day was cool and the sun bright, as we headed to Zolfo Springs and Arcadia. Our lunch was enjoyed at the Magnolia Street Seafood and Grill. Our Riders love trying local restaurants in the small towns we visit.

A nostalgic photo in front of Sleepy Hollow
One of those small towns, and favored ride destinations for our Riders, is Floral City. On January 11th a fire broke out in the Sleepy Hollow Restaurant, a beloved local landmark, luckily no one was hurt. Sleepy Hollow meant so much to the community that dozens of customers volunteered to help clean up the debris. The owner does hope to completely rebuild. Floral City is such a beautiful ride, but we may have to find a new restaurant to grab a sandwich until they reopen. We always have a ride or two under our helmets, contact any member for more ride information or join our next planning meeting on Tuesday, March 19th at 6:15 pm at the downtown Club.

he Saltwater Anglers took advantage of several outstanding February weather days to get offshore. While the in-season Snapper and Grouper proved somewhat elusive, we had no trouble catching Red Snapper off a rock pile, and AJ’s off a wreck. Max Fulmer demonstrated an in-line windon planer connection that should prove productive during the coming spring Kingfish run. Come join us for our regular meetings and we’ll make some plans to get out on the water. The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at one of our next meetings on March 13th and April 10th.

BROAD

J
anuary’s weather was sometimes frightful, but then became delightful, and the Broad Reachers were back on the water. Sailors celebrated balmy weather on January 19th with a fun sail, followed by the Captain’s Race on February 2nd. Joanne Simmons (2017-18) took 1st, Barbara Arnold (2013-14) 2nd, and Carol Hansen (2016-17) 3rd. PRO Gloria Davis and Race Committee Nancy Dunn did a great job getting off three races in light air. February 8th, the club hosted sailors from Venice, Treasure Island, Clearwater, Dunedin, Davis Island, St. Pete and PAG in an Interclub regatta. The morning began with a clinic on racing starts, taught by Diane Fowler, followed by a series of on-the-water practice
starts and a race around marks. Twelve sailors worked to get around the course with a pesky current and light air. Broad Reacher, Debbie Walcutt, placed 2nd; Salty Sister, Sarah Richards, 1st, and Carolyn Holmes of the Bitter Ends placed 3rd. Thanks to Coach Diane Fowler, PRO Gloria Davis, Mark Boat Nancy Dunn, and 15 volunteers for terrific work. Our winter party is always a blast, and this year Nita George and her crew outdid themselves with a Valentine/Casino Party February 9th. Members, spouses and friends gathered at the top floor of Bayfront Towers for a delicious pot luck dinner and gambling throughout the evening. The Broad Reachers held their general meeting January 12th. Members also attended FWSA’s general meeting at the Tampa Yacht Club on January 16th.

ur first cruise of 2019 was January 18-20 to our own docks downtown. Of course it’s one of our favorites! Port Directors Paul & Marlene Daverede and Les & Nancy Bauer planned an event-packed weekend for all of us. On Friday, we were treated (compliments of our Port Directors) with Bada Bing! Followed by a nice dinner at Gratzzi’s. Then on Saturday, another spectacular evening hosted at the Daverede’s beautiful downtown condo -- It just keeps getting better. Thanks again to our January Port Directors and to all those who joined!
For our March Cruising Fleet Dinner Program (Thursday, March 14) our own Michael Bodin will bring us up to speed on some Florida Governmental Affairs related to anchoring, and other impacts to recreational boating. We will also begin sign-up for our June cruise to Venice Yacht Club at that time.
Inquire or sign-up for our events on the SPYC Website, Cruising Fleet page. Looking forward to seeing you on the water …
