CHAPTER SIX

COMMODORE’S LOG

Spring has Sprung! If you like life in the fast lane, then you savored the 20th running of the St. Petersburg Grand Prix. SPYC was honored to host the kickoff Green Flag Luncheon on March 7th with many local dignitaries in attendance including the Mayor and several City Council persons. Many IndyCar drivers were also there for some race commentary and picture ops. We hosted our annual Garage Party and this year added something new - a VIP Lounge in the Bridge Room during the race. I understand the VIP guests were “Livin’ On a Prayer” when the 80's rock star, Jon Bon Jovi, made a surprise visit! You just never know who you’re going to see at the Club.

March was a busy month and April is shaping up to be just as busy. The St. Patrick’s Day activities were well attended including Sunday Brunch and a wee bit o’ entertainment in the Heritage Lounge that evening. We also hosted a Reggae Night at the Tiki Bar, a Perfect Pairings Wine Event at PAG and Easter Brunch was a smashing success with over 600 reservations!

Although there was plenty of racing in our streets there was also a lot of racing on our waterfront. The Pennington Cup was held on March 9th at PAG, Winter Lightning Championship was from March 16th - 19th, and the Flying Dutchman Worlds was from March 26th - 31st. I hope you were able to take in some of this racing excitement. Upcoming regattas include the J/24 North Americans on April 11th -14th and the 52nd Annual Regata del Sol al Sol is from April 25th –May 3rd. SPYC has a number of boats challenging the waters of the Gulf sailing to Mexico. I will, however, be sailing across the Gulf at 33,000 feet. See you in Isla Mujeres!

Mark your calendars for upcoming events including the rescheduled St. Petersburg Motor Classic Car Show on April 7th in South Straub Park, a Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show on April 20th and the Regata del Sol al Sol Street Party on April 25th. If you want to flip your calendar to May, please save the date for our Mother’s Day Brunch on May 12th and the Bee Gees Tribute Show and 70’s Dance Party on May 25th.

I was disappointed to recently announce the resignation of our General Manager, Rhett J. Robicheaux. Rhett has been with us since August 2021 coming to us from the Savannah Yacht Club. Please wish Rhett well in his new ventures if you see him around the Club. To that end, I have appointed a Search Committee chaired by PC Brian Smith that includes the Flag Officers, PC Richard Winning and PC Harvey Ford. The Committee is hard at work screening candidates from around the country to find just the right fit for our Club. I will certainly keep you posted on this most important project.

Finally, just a quick update on our docks and new building projects; the event pier should be well underway by the time you are reading this. Additionally, I recently attended a BROC meeting with an accomplished national architect who sketched out some possible floor plans and elevations for our new clubhouse. It is very exciting to start to see these proposals taking shape. Please stay tuned for more updates via a bi-weekly E-blast to membership. I hope to see you around the Club........

Cordially,

General Manager’s Log

What a month it has been – March was jammed packed with activities! We hosted the St. Petersburg Grand Prix Green Flag opening event here at the Club with some of our Leadership Team in attendance, along with many city officials and the Mayor; followed by a great weekend of racing and members utilizing the Club. This year we added to our already successful Garage Party a VIP Room Experience in the Bridge Room where we had over 50 members in attendance. Members were delighted with Chef’s exceptional culinary creations as well as tasting Hampton Water (a very lovely Rose wine) which is Jon Bon Jovi’s wine that is produced in France. We were even able to arrange to have Jon Bon Jovi himself make a special guest appearance.

St. Patrick’s Day was next up and as it fell on a Sunday the Irish cheer was felt all weekend long. We adjusted the way we celebrate our complimentary corned beef and cabbage by doing a buffet downstairs which was well received. In addition, we had our Sunday Brunch upstairs, as usual, and included an Irish theme with Irish dancers and music - well over 100 in attendance! We concluded the month with a sold-out Easter Brunch and Easter Egg Hunt for the little ones. As we sail into the Spring, with all the pollen in the air, April looks to be a great month around the Club especially as the weather gets better and better. The rescheduled St. Petersburg Motor Classic is set for April 7th and should be one to remember as the Committee has been raising the bar each year. We have many funfilled events happening so don't miss out - event reservations are required so RSVP soon before these events become sold out!

In closing, I’m sure everyone has heard the news of my resignation. It has been my honor and pleasure serving as your General Manager these past two and a half years and I’m sorry that our time together has been cut short. I believe the Club is in good hands and the future is looking very bright. Thank you for the support, guidance and encouragement you have provided me during my time at SPYC.

Even though I will miss my entire Team and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, I am looking forward to the challenges of my new position and starting a new phase of my career and life with family. I’ve said this from early on in my tenure here that this is one of the best Teams of employees I have ever worked with top to bottom, I will miss the friendships and confident the Club will continue supporting each of you! I’m grateful for having the opportunity to work with the entire leadership of the Club from the Flag, Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. I wish nothing but the best for the SPYC family and hopeful to be invited back to see all the new additions in the future.

Cheers - General Manager, COO Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM

Junior Activities Update

The SPYC Junior Sailing Team has been busy as of late with team members sailing in events all over the USA as well as Europe. The team has been training hard, with upcoming events like the USODA Team Trials and the ILCA Youth Worlds Qualifiers on the horizon.

In late February, SPYC was well represented at the US Sailing Olympic Trials which were hosted from the Miami Yacht Club Sailing took place on the Atlantic Ocean on the waters of Government Cut. SPYC was represented by Kate Danielson and Sidney Moyer in the ILCA 6 and Peyton Weaver and Callen Burnett in the ILCA 7. Kate was our top performer finishing in 9th place overall. It was great to see our youth sailors competing with the best in the country in such a high stakes regatta.

Our Opti RWB team has been hard at work! Dalton Cellemare, Thomas Weidner and Bennett Lamb qualified to represent the USA at the Opti Orange Regatta hosted in Valencia,Spain. Five hundred and fifty sailors from all over the world were in attendance to sail. Also attending from SPYC were Constantino Conrad, Dylan Thomley and William Weidner

Our High School Sailing South Points series has come to a close with St. Pete High School showing that it will be a force to be reckoned with at the district championships in April. SPHS finished the season 5th overall and won the last points event.

SPYC is once again gearing up for an exciting summer with 10 weeks of learn to sail camps for kids aged 5-15. Please be sure to check out the schedule at www.sailstpete.org .

SPYC's Magical History Tour

At the end of March the Club hosted the Flying Dutchman World Championship. The Flying Dutchman is a planning sailing dinghy which was an Olympic sailing class from 1960 through 1992 when it was replaced by the Laser. Following is a bit of history going not too far back to April 2006 and the winning team from Hungary.

John L. “Jack” Powell, charter member (1958) and past commodore of the IFDCAUS, was the driving force that brought the class to St. Petersburg for the 1962 FD Worlds – the first worlds to be hosted by SPYC. Since that time, the Club has hosted the World Championships for this class in 1997, 2006 and 2024.

But I digress… this story is about the darling little marble trophy (weighing in close to 30 lbs.!) residing in a trophy case in the main hall. This is a `keeper’ trophy given to member Jean Bond who hosted the FD team of Szabolcs Majthenyi & Andras Domokos: 1st place winners of the 2006 FD Worlds. This Hungarian team has been the most successful in the history of the championships, with fourteen titles, making Hungary the most successful among the nations.

We hope Andras & Szabolcs will be happy to see their trophy displayed in our Club.

Many thanks to all who have contributed in one way or another to the research & development of our history!

Entertainment Committee News

We had several popular events in March: Saturday, March 4th– Surreal Musical Chairs Dinner was a memorable and well attended event. A whimsical three course dinner was served along with Surreal Icebreaker games enjoyed by all, plus a DJ. We maxed out at 60 guests! Everyone met new people at this event, as attendees changed seats with each course served.

March 15th we hosted a special Reggae Night at the Tiki Bar to celebrate the kick-off of this year's Twilight Sailing on Friday nights. Attendees enjoyed LIVE Reggae Music and food specials. St Patrick’s Day there was LIVE Irish music in the Heritage Lounge that evening provided by the Irish Duo band - green beer was also on the evenings agenda. March 24th we hosted our first daytime, off-site, group outing to the Sarasota Polo Club for an exhilarating Hawaiian themed Polo Match! We took a chartered bus and headed out for a day of fun with about 50 other SPYC members and their guests got dressed up for the Hawaiian Luau theme.

MARCH 2024 Employee of the Month Yaumara GONZALEZ ECHEVARRIA

It is with great pleasure and appreciation for her hard work to announce, Yaumara Gonzalez Echevarria, as the March Employee of the Month! Yaumara has been with us since April 2022 and started in the Pantry Department. She quickly demonstrated her skills in the culinary world and was able to adhere to recipes, instructions, policies and flow of business whilst learning the English language: a task of its own.

Yet even under extreme challenging situations her infectious smile and overall positive attitude makes her a joy to be around and work with. Yaumara your hard work, positive attitude and dedication to the Club is evident and much appreciated by all. Keep up the great work!

ackwoods Georgia has a mystical feeling on crisp evenings when a bonfire warms your bones. Whether it’s the cold morning hunts or the hearty meals, a quail hunting trip to an old Georgia plantation leaves an indelible imprint in your memory.

Fifteen Wing Shooters traveled to Moultrie for a quail hunt in early February. This was our third trip to a place called Boggy Pond. It is a rough hunting camp known for it’s hospitality and it’s well stocked open bar. The camp consists of old houses that have been placed around a quaint lodge and a shooting dock on the pond. The rooms are small, the floors are creaky, the furniture is third hand and the wiring and plumbing are barely adequate. The food however is down home and delicious. Our first dinner was ham, lima beans, mashed potatoes and peach cobbler. The second was chicken fried steak night.

Tags were acquired by three Wing Shooters on this year’s trip to Boggy. Fire Man (Joe Petrella) was earned for his fire building skills. Dead Eye (Doug Williamson) normally a tag for sharp shooting, in this case it’s a left eye issue. Tail Feathers (Les Bauer) was earned for his penchant at hitting only the tail end of a fast flying bird.

We also celebrated Marti Cochran who completed all the requirements to earn her Salty Sisters Skipper’s Hat!! Huge Congratulations to Marti on this significant Salty Sister achievement.

BROAD REACHERS

The Broad Reachers hosted an FWSA Interclub Regatta on February 23rd at PAG. It was sunny and clear, but quite windy for pram sailing. Shore support was organized by Carol Hansen, with Mik Severini, Pat Burrows, Joanne Simmons and Katie Rodgers rigging boats for the competitors. Gloria Davis was our PRO and she was supported by Selga Sakss, Trish Billings and Charl Hadfield on Race Committee. The RC ran two races in 8-12 knots of winds with gusts up to 20 eddying around the cove.

Turnout was fabulous, with 14 competitors, including 4 rookies who were in their first year of FWSA racing. We had competitors from seven clubs, with two racers from each club, including Bow Chasers, Broad Reachers, Dinghy Dames, Bitter Ends, Luffing Lassies, Salty Sisters and Windlasses. Fifteen spectators cheered on the sailors from the dock. First place was Lisa Ehrhart from Luffing Lassies, Joanne Simmons from Broad Reachers and Ann Carroll from Bitter Ends tied for second place, and third place was Cathy McNally from Bow Chasers.

RV LAND CRUISERS NEWS

Who is the primary driver in your family? When Rving, just like boating or flying, someone is usually the primary at the helm or the wheel, and the other performs an important job in the other seat. In boating, this other person might be referred to as the Admiral (to the Captain), and in RVing they might be referred to as the Co-Pilot or Navigator (to the Pilot). Whatever they are called, both jobs are important. While your hands may not be on the wheel you are still the eyes and ears providing navigation, alerts, and morale support! It’s a team and requires Teamwork.

However, there may be times where it’s up to one person so it’s important that both of you know how to drive. Why? Because if the primary becomes unavailable for some reason, you need to be ready. You don’t want to be in the position to have to learn to drive the rig quickly—and at a most difficult time while under extreme stress. Don’t wait for that moment to happen. Start learning to drive the rig now, and then share the everyday driving to stay in practice.

Anyone can drive an RV... It just takes Teamwork!

Don’t limit yourself just to driving. There are other things to prepare the rig. For example, disconnecting power and water systems, raising the jacks or levelers, attaching the tow or toad and so on. Practice these things too (have a checklist) so you are prepared before an actual need. While predominantly men are usually the primary driver, many women drive RVs. Go ahead, take the helm!

CRUISING FLEET

Port Directors

At the March 7th luncheon our speaker was Jeff Baredelli, Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist, WFLA , who gave a very informative talk on hurricane dynamics and climate change. At this meeting, Caryn Bain presented a beautiful plaque recognizing Past Captains of the SPYC Cruising Fleet, which will be hung in the "Clubs Within the Club" alcove just outside of Grille 1909.

In March we cruised to Twin Dolphin Marina and Bradenton Yacht Club, with 5 boats docked at Bradenton YC and 13 at Twin Dolphin. Both destinations are always two of our favorite ports with so much to do in Bradenton. Tune in next month for photos from this cruise.

Looking ahead, April 4th will be our kickoff dinner for our 2024 Commodore’s Cruises scheduled for April and May. Commodore Scott Boyle will carry on the tradition of addressing the Fleet at our kickoff dinner, providing an update on the Club, and wishing us well as 28 boats embark on our voyages. Our April Commodore’s Cruise departs April 5th, with 15 boats headed to the Keys, and then 11 boats are headed on to the Bahamas. Special thanks to Tom & Sandra Thomas for stepping up to lead the voyage from the Keys to the Bahamas! Our May Commodore’s Cruise departs on May 17th, with seven scheduled ports on their round trip to Tween Waters.

UPCOMING Cruising Fleet Events:

February was a busy cruising month for the Fleet, with three cruises to Carlouel Yacht Club. Many thanks to Port Directors Pam & Garry Haas, Kim & Paul Blake, and Kathy & Larry Church for organizing dining and activities. Highlights included docktails with Rear Commodore Pete Jones and his wife Mary Lee, Valentine’s bingo, kayaking, beach time, a scavenger hunt and late-night cocktails by the fire pit. Special thanks to Jeff Eckhart for performing vessel safety checks for all cruisers in Group 3!

Daytrippers

On February 29th, 20 Day Trippers enjoyed a beautiful ride and lunch at Doc Ford’s Jungle Terrace. The following Day Trippers outing was at Buoy’s on March 26th and was hosted by Day Chair, Kim Blake.
