CHAPTER TWO

COMMODORE’S LOG

Hello Friends.....Wow! What a Commodore’s Ball. Bill and Mary Waters sure know how to throw a party! A memorable event was enjoyed by all. Special thanks goes to Chef Christian and his staff.

This is the time of year when the Club is bustling with holiday cheer. I hope you and your family take advantage of the many ways to enjoy your Club during the holiday season. There will be many holiday parties to choose from. I have already bought my festive/ugly attire for the White Elephant/Ugly Sweater Party which will be presented by the Entertainment Committee on Friday, December 9th. Another fun event will be the Lighting of the Yachts on December 10th, followed on December 17th by the Dazzler Holiday Show, which is always a family favorite. A SPYC honored tradition is the Children’s Christmas Brunch & Party on Sunday, December 18th. I am told that Santa Claus will be making a special visit arriving by boat at our marina. To ring in the new year the New Year’s Eve Celebration will be held on December 31st, followed by the Annual Complimentary Eggnog Party on January 1, 2023.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members who assisted in the development of the Club’s master facilities plan by participating in the seveteen focus group meetings held in October and November. We received a lot of insightful feedback and ideas for the future of our Club. Member involvement was extraordinary with approximately 300 members participating in the discussion groups. Members will have more opportunities to participate in this process when we hold the upcoming Member Town Hall Meetings and ultimately the Special Membership Meeting at which a vote on a plan will be taken.

Our on the water program has been busy. In November, the Fall Foiling Event was hosted. This is an up and coming, athletic sport to watch. On November 12th & 13th, the SPYC J/70 mixed plus Championship was held. Next up will be the SPYC High School Keelboat Nationals on December 10th & 11th. The SPYC Club Championship was scheduled for December 17th; rescheduled due to Hurricane Ian. The winner of this regatta will receive a reserved parking space for the year so competition is expected to be fierce.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season.

Cordially,

Mission

Brian K. Smith, Commodore Statement: The St. Petersburg Yacht Club provides preeminent yachting and social experiences for members, their families and guests, and honors the Club’s rich yachting heritage in a welcoming environment.

General Manager’s Log

Incredible is an understatement when it comes to the 2022 Commodore’s Ball! I couldn’t agree more with Commodore Smith as Commodore Waters and his lovely wife, Mary, sure do know how to throw a party. I want to personally thank our entire TEAM for an outstanding job from start to finish! The teamwork was noticeable, and I couldn’t be prouder of each of you!

The weather outside is delightful with warm days and cooler nights. The holidays are upon us, and the cheer of the season is felt all around. You will notice a lot more activities around the Club this month as we prepare for the upcoming holidays with various record-breaking holiday parties and Club events planned. It’s hard to believe December is already here and we are closing in on yet another year. How time flies when you’re having fun! I would like to wish each of you Happy Holidays while spending time with family and friends during this wonderful time of year.

Reservations, please...as during this time of year we are seeing more and more of our membership utilizing the Club’s facilities downtown and at PAG. With that said, we strongly encourage reservations at all meal periods. Despite the unprecedented times we continue to be in, usage in the Club is rising in a big way, and 2023 is already showing signs that this trend will continue. As the number of members wanting to eat at the Club increases, a reservation at one of the Club’s restaurants, except for the Heritage Lounge, assures you will be seated that night. Reservations also help us plan so we have the appropriate number of staff on the floor and the correct amount of food and drink on hand.

Since 2019 the Club has been impacted significantly by rising costs in the food and beverage operations. Whether it be supply chain availability or extreme rising cost we are impacted by this truth. Chef Christian is committed to providing the highest quality product to our members while being mindful of the Club’s financial health. With that said, here are some significant increases we are faced with today. Some of our popular protein items such as beef tenderloin were $10.48 per pound and is $30.89 per pound today, a 195% increase. Chicken was $3.78 per pound and is $7.58 per pound today at a 100% increase, and similarly grouper was $17.00 per pound and now $26.00 per pound at a 50% increase. We are seeing the same if not much more substantial increases in our staple items like eggs, butter, romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce, and heavy cream at a 140% increase collectively.

Focus Groups/Workshops and Next Steps - Late October into early November we conducted 17 focus group sessions with Peacock + Lewis, and our membership, with about 300 members in attendance. From my perspective I felt they went well. Each group had its own heartbeat and a lot of thoughts and conversation transpired from each. We then sent out the presentation to all in attendance along with a survey to retain further feedback. This information is still being deciphered so that we can get back to work in formalizing a final plan to be discussed in the new year. We have also decided to add one additional virtual Focus Group on December 7th at 6:00 pm – this will be available to all members who were unable to attend the previous groups we have already conducted. From here we will put together one plan to be vetted by the membership in January then make any additions or changes with the anticipation of going to vote in February.

In closing, the last three years have been interesting to say the least, but I believe our future is brighter than ever and things will get back on track before we know it. In the meanwhile, use your Club as your safe haven to bring friends and family and enjoy all the good times there are to have at all of our facilities. Happy Holiday’s to all!

Junior Sailing Update

The SPYC Junior Sailing Team has had another successful month with sailors competing in events all across the USA and abroad. The High School Sailing season has started, Opti and Laser racing are in full swing and our 2022-2023 Green Fleet has been hard at work.

Over the weekend of October 29th & 30th our sailors traveled to Miami to compete in the Halloween Howler Regatta hosted by the Coconut Grove Sailing Club . On the Opti RWB course SPYC’s John Hartney put in a good showing finishing 5th overall in a strong fleet of 100 RWB sailors. Also competing were Thomas Weidner, Leah Abrams, Finn Cox, Scarlett and Reece Bizourn, Talon Schenk, Chris Shaffer and Ethan Cox .

On the Laser course our sailors also put in strong performance with Rosie Simpson finishing in 8th overall in the 4.7 fleet. Also competing were Ryder Ellis, Jad Aberdrabbo, Sophia Fuller, Callen Burnett and Gloria Privis

110 sailors competed on the Opti Green Fleet course in what was the biggest green fleet regatta of the year. Our sailors learned a lot about sailing in a large fleet with tough conditions. Competing in Miami were Tucker Gowens, William Weidner, Nico Sansone, Ronan Madigan and Weston Bowie .

SPYC’s John Hartney qualified to represent the USA at the 2022 South American Championships hosted in Brazil. Sailing in a fleet of 160 boats from around the world John finished in 23rd overall in the fleet racing portion of the event and 3rd overall in the team racing.

SPYC’s Finn Cox qualified to represent the USA at the Bahamian National Championship sailed out of Paradise Village in Nassau. Finn had a great trip training and racing and finished in 33rd overall.

Our High School sailors have started their South Points Racing season with events in Jensen Beach and Sarasota. At the first event in Jensen Beach, Shorecrest sailed a strong event finishing in 3rd place overall. In Sarasota two weeks later, our sailors representing St. Pete High School finished in 6th place overall in the varsity division and the St. Pete High School JV team finished first overall in the JV event.

10 ON THE WATER

Yachting Information Committee

Once again we will be recognizing SPYC members who are contributing to our on-the-water community and the nautical arts. Nominations for SPYC Yachting Recognition Awards are due by January 2, 2023, and the awards event will scheduled for March. Exact date will depend on other club-related events. Please forward nominations to susansnyder33705@gmail.com.

SPYC has been named as the host club and organizer for the J/70 World Championships in 2023, which is a validation of our leadership role globally in sail racing. The 2022 championship was held in Monaco (with only one day of racing) and moves to Mexico in 2024.

Locally SPYC continues to host kite foiling and wing foiling events, and Donna Sue Marks , the organizing chair for these events along with Larry Massingill will be speaking at the US Sailing’s Sailing Leadership Forum about hosting and running events for this cutting edge of sailing. (Foiling is not just for America’s Cup boats any more.) The forum returns to St. Pete Beach at the Tradewinds Island Grand Hotel on February 2nd - 4th, 2023, and is open to all interested volunteers, class/fleet leaders, coaches, etc.

The regatta calendar slows down during the holidays, but remember the Lighting of the Yachts at SPYC downtown marina, which will have a judged contest for best lighted boat, on Saturday, December 10th. Some of the boats will be serving holiday treats and beverages. This was a very busy evening at the Club last year (this is a popular event and the parking lot fills up) , so plan to come early!

DECEMBER 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

Welcome!

Jason Hooper

Before I get into the heart of my introduction, I'd like to thank Mr. Rhett J. Robicheaux and the Board of Directors for this great opportunity to lead the SPYC Food & Beverage team.

I have managed many teams, but none with so much potential for growth and success. Potential is a great starting place, but to create actual change, you need both natural skills and the conviction to reach the goal.

Originally from New Jersey, I started my hospitality career at the age of 16 in the GolfWorks program. This program gave me a chance to work during the summer and intern in different areas of the private club. During that time, I not only learned how to run the operation, but learned the key to exceptional hospitality - anticipation and execution. From that point, I was hooked and knew that I had found my calling.

From there, I sought to hone in to my professional and business skills by obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering and Business degree from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. This experience afforded me the opportunity to secure my first full-time job as an Assistant Grill Room Manager at a New Jersey Country Club. From here I was able to showcase my professionalism and knowledge of the industry while earning the respect of my co-workers and made my way up the ranks to the position of the Clubhouse Manager at Arcola Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. To further the career I had grown to love, I enrolled in the Club Management Association of America . Through CMAA, I was been able to obtain the formal training and credentials needed to make me an all-around asset to this industry. My 20+ years in the Private Club business has landed me here at SPYC as your Food and Beverage Director.

My mission statement is simple: State a clear Vision ; Commit to the actions that get you to the Goa l; Create the Team and Community around you that can support the Vision ; Finally, enjoy Extraordinary Results! My door is always open if you have suggestions on what we can do to make your experience better or, if you just want to stop by and say hello. I have 2,400+ names to learn and I plan to be here long enough to get to know everyone. I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Congratulations! Christian Mayrhofer

Growing up in the foothills of Salzburg Austria on a family farm, the smell of cooking with farm fresh ingredients in his grandmother’s kitchen first attracted 14-year-old Christian Mayrhofer to become a chef. Managing to convince his parents to allow him to follow his passion, Chef Mayrhofer began his apprenticeship at Vienna Hilton’s culinary program, alongside practical training, as well as attending Hotel and Gastronomy College in Salzburg Austria where he graduated 4 years later.

Following his mandatory military service, he fulfilled his dream of travel and curiosity in foreign cultures by accepting positions around the world including assignments in Australia, Singapore, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. While in Kuala Lumpur, he had the opportunity to cook for the late Queen Elizabeth at a state dinner.

Coming to the USA he managed operations at Windows on the World at the World Trade Center in New York City, as well as Hotel Properties in Pittsburgh and Boston.

Honing his culinary finesse in Asian cuisine he discovered his entrepreneurial spirit by being recruited for PF Chang’s as culinary partner and later in the capacity of corporate training chef on the eastern seaboard market.

Chef Christian has appeared in many TV cooking shows, and was nominated the chef of the year award in 2012 for organizing the annual March of Dimes Star Chefs charity event in Pittsburgh, PA.

Fulfilling his longtime goal of moving to sunny Florida, Chef Christian has recently been appointed Executive Chef at SPYC in October this year.

On October 5th, Captain Jennifer Parramore welcomed everyone to the 71st Salty Sister Annual Meeting This year’s meeting was a well-attended success.

2022-2023 Election Results:

Captain – Dee Gill, Co-Captain – Valerie Massengill, Secretary – Terry McGough, Treasurer – Beverly Smoak, and Awards – Joan Stephenson. (Directors) Pat Burrows, PC Gloria Davis, and Helle Getz. PC Janet Walker will serve out the remaining term for Vicki Posner, who resigned this year.

• Co- Captain Dee Gill announced that this year’s Spirit Trophy was awarded to Selga Sakss.

• The Amy Joyce Uhler Race Management Award is chosen every year by the Co-Captain for her contributions toward race management. This year’s trophy is awarded to Gloria Davis.

• This year’s Elizabeth Priestley Optimist Memorial Trophy was presented to the Salty Sister who best exemplifies Betsy’s spirit of eternal optimism in “achieving or attempting the challenge to achieve personal goals through exceptional character, as demonstrated on the water and in her life in the context of being a Salty Sister.” This year’s recipient was a tearful, but happy Linda Testa!!

• The Inaugural FWSA Enthusiast Award, created by PC Carol Hansen and Marti Cochran, was awarded to Joanne Simmons for her participation in the past FWSA events.

We happily welcomed the class of 2021, who officially became Salty Sisters today! CAR CLUB

Even though technically the Car Club and the Car Show are separate entities, this year they have been blended with the St Pete Motor Classic be “Hosted by” the SPYC Car Club. We never knew we were so important. The Club continues with monthly meetings, and of course right now dominated by the Show, so if there is anyone willing to run a monthly Car Club let me know. I’d love to do a Cars & Coffee meet-up out at PAG. Update on the Show - we opened registration on November 2nd after a few last minute technical hitches, but soon had the first wave of signed up vehicles.

Members should sign up ASAP, and there is early benefits for the first 100 registrations; visit our web site (www. stpetemotorclassic.com) or on the Club's website under the Community Events webpage at www.spyc.org. This year we are excited to have Morgan Cars as our featured marque, they will be here the entire weekend, with cars coming from all over the state and beyond. These enticing British Roadsters still look like they did 50+ years ago, but you can get a new one today. Other news is we will have a full range of shirts, polos, hats, and visors that will be made available for pre-order. Again, check our web site for updates on this.

Some great improvements bring upgraded crystal trophies and the offer of a VIP package, enabling guests of the show to sample our cuisine in a special environment away from the crowds. We are looking for sponsors for this and other promotable items. As in last year we are seeking members direct sponsorship for the trophies. Cost is $100 and early doners will have them engraved with their names. Incidentally we call these gifting members “Founders” and we will have a society for them, it also brings you access to the VIP areas (not the food though unless you buy in). It’s all looking good but there is still a lot more work to do, so a big THANK YOU to all those who have volunteered for the Committee and supported us. On a final housekeeping, if anyone needs to contact us we have a dedicated phone number and e-mail: (727) 488-0584 - stpetemotorclassic@gmail.com. Happy Motoring!

RV LAND CRUISERS

This is the last installment of Brian & Angela Kowalik’s epic summer trip. Can you imagine going on a 60-day trip with strangers, but with a common goal…to go to Alaska? While this was an adventure traveling in a motorhome, it included other travel as well: bus, train, boat, ferry, side-by-side (ATV), bikes, and snow coaches! On our trip across the US through Canada to Alaska and back, we traveled almost 17,000 miles, stayed in over 75 RV parks and ventured through five time zones!

We traveled on some scenic highways and byways, such as the Top of the World Highway, crossing the US / Canadian border at least 6 times…maybe more. We became experts using the ArriveCan app! Along the way we saw rainbows, desert, waterfalls, coastline, rainforest, and Northern Lights! And what about animals? There were so many birds, including bald eagles, puffins and mosquitos, bear, moose and caribou, more mosquitos, whales, and maybe a few more mosquitos!

Our RV crossed the Yukon River on a ferry! We panned for gold, took a side-by-side ATV adventure to a glacier, and went halibut fishing off the Homer Spit! We learned about the history of the Alcan Highway and Alaska Pipeline, the First Nations people, and dog sled racing. We explored native villages, and quaint mining camps (like Chicken, AK), and even visited North Pole! Throughout the trip we actually saw more glaciers than we could imagine, and beautiful waterfalls created from them in every crevice along the way.

Traveling inland, we visited Denali National Park where we saw bear, elk, moose, beautiful wilderness, and got to marvel at the elusive Mt. Denali herself, the highest mountain peak in North America, and the third most prominent and yet isolated peak on Earth! They say, only about 30% get to see her due to the temperamental weather of the surrounding area. It’s a trip most people dream of, so we are living the dream!

To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com

BROAD REACHERS

On October 14th, the 50th Annual Commodore Lucas Invitational Ladies Pram Regatta was held on a spectacular blue-sky day at Pass-a-Grille. Our PRO, Gloria Davis and her Race Committee team consisting of Barbara Goodman, Audrey Orgo, and KT Trudeau, did a magnificent job. We had sailors and spectators from the Salty Sisters, Bow Chasers, Windlasses, Dinghy Dames, Rhumb Runners, and of course the Broad Reachers. The winds cooperated and five races were completed. Thanks to our “Boat Handlers”; Joanne Simmons, Jennifer Anderson, Marti Cochran, Barbara Watson, Carin Koros and her daughter for assisting on the docks by rigging, loading and unloading all the boats so the sailors could concentrate on sailing!

Sailing for the Broad Reachers was Katie Rodgers and Juliette Clarke. We also want to thank Juliette’s husband, Gary Spivack for manning the Mark/Safety boat. Our special guest, Alice Lucas, was on hand to watch the races and to present the trophies to the winners. Coming in first place from the Windlasses was Robin Babka, 2nd place winner Cathy MaNally from the Bow Chasers, and Salty Sister Bijie Ding finished third. The Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us at Pass-a-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. There is no such thing as “too little” experience to join the Broad Reachers. We’ll help you learn and have fun doing it! Our Saturday morning sails are usually followed by lunch at the club. Contact Carol Hansen (carol@dband1.com) for more information.

SALTWATER ANGLERS

Thank you to all participants and sponsors of the 2022 SPYC Fishing Tournament with eight boats participating. The new format was well received; feedback was solid “best tournament yet”. We added cash prizes, food, and adult beverages. The results demonstrate that anyone can win. There was a tie for First Place between an offshore boat and an inshore boat. Each boat had three First Place fish and one Second Place fish for a total of 11 points. The tie was broken by the total length of all the point scoring fish, going to the offshore boat sponsored by Cartier CPAs, Captained by Jack and son John Cartier. A first-time late entrant, Jake Holehouse placed Second fishing inshore. Third Place and Top Female Angler were won on the two-time previous winning boat 'Rum Bunctious' sponsored by Florida Family Cremations, Captained by David Menneke. Its not too early to sign up for the 2023 Spring Fishing Tournament on April 29, 2023; there will be a limit on the number of boats. Get in on the fun! Boat or no boat let me know and we’ll find a spot. (We meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Come join us at our next meeting on: December 14th & January 11th. Get on the e-mail list at www.SPYCfish.com)

CRUISING FLEET

The fleet has been very active with an October cruise to both Anna Maria Island’s Galati Yacht Basin and Twin Dolphins Marina with 11 boats plus “iron dinghies” participating. The weather was amazing and our two port Director teams, Doug and Debbie Williamson and Ray and Charlotte Noyes organized activities and meals. The Day Trippers had an outing to the Maximo Tiki Docks with 21 members enjoying a fantastic lunch and time together. Thanks to Barbara and Heber Weller for organizing the Day Trippers events. The fleet also participated in the Commodore’s Ball with a Fleet Club table and cruise-in to the downtown docks.

A Cruising Fleet Dinner on November 3rd had a record number of attendees with a robust agenda of announcements and signups for upcoming events and cruises. An exciting 2023 cruising calendar was unveiled and Susan Cross gave an excellent presentation on being Port Directors. In addition, 9 new members joined the Cruising Fleet Club at the recent SPYC member appreciation event. Our Club is growing and there is a buzz of activity! If you are willing to spend a few hours on the road and a night away from home, there are a number of fine shooting establishments within range of St. Petersburg. Early on October 25th Joe Petrella, Les Bauer, Jim Montgomery, Jack Cartier, Dan Gross, Fred Bickley, Breck Amick, Gene Collins, Sandy Schoenberg and Frank Robinson travelled to Okeechobee, FL. After lunch at a local establishment this group of ten Wing Shooters spent the afternoon tuning up their shooting skills at Quail Creek Sporting Clays. A short drive to Stuart, FL for dinner, a generous dose of camaraderie and an overnight stay put the group in position for a test of their shooting skills.
