CHAPTER TWO

COMMODORE’S LOG Happy Holidays! The Commodores Ball was another incredible event this year with a Titanic themed party to send off Commodore Brian Smith and his wife Connie. The crowd enjoyed an amazing meal of steak and lobster prepared by Chef Christian and graciously served by our attentive staff, and who could forget the dessert room. (I can’t!) December around the Club is a busy time. There are a number of social events to enjoy surrounded by the beautifully decorated Clubhouse. Don’t forget to break out that "not so favorite" sweater in the back of the closet for the Ugly Sweater Christmas Party on December 8th or dance the night away at Latin Night on December 21st . If Latin music isn’t your thing, then maybe Christmas in Motown, hosted by the Woman's Club, will get your motor running on December 14th - this event is open to all SPYC members. The Children’s Christmas Brunch is an annual favorite, and you can join in along with a very special visti from Santa on December 10th. Finally, you don’t want to miss ringing in the new year with a Roaring 20’s New Year’s Eve Party on the 31st followed by a Club tradition - an Complimentary Eggnog Party on New Year’s Day. Mark your calendar early for these 2024 events starting out with a Meet & Greet with the Flag Officers and Board Members on January 5th. The annual St. Pete Motor Classic is scheduled for February 4th and there are three

SPYC Group Excursions for a new season of Broadway at the Straz Performing Arts Center in Tampa planned, beginning on February 11th with Moulin Rouge. (ohh la la!) The new year will also include plenty of sailing with the John Jennings Memorial Regatta on January 6th , the Master Driver Team Race on the 13th and 14th, and the infamous SPYC Club Championship on January 27th, (there is a reserved parking space on the line here). February starts with the ILCA Midwinters East Regatta from the 1st through the 4th, Valentines Day Regatta 10th & 11th and the Sailing World Regatta Series from the 16th through the 18th . I hope your holidays are special with friends and family and don’t forget to include the Club in your plans. I’ll see you there!

Cordially,

Scott Boyle, Commodore

he 2023 Commodore’s Ball was a tremendous success. Commodore Smith and his lovely bride Connie sure know how to throw a party! I want to personally thank our entire TEAM for an outstanding job from start to finish! The teamwork was noticeable, and I couldn’t be prouder of each of you! The cheer of the season is felt all around as we gear up for record breaking holiday parties and Club events this month. Reservations, Please! As it is that time of year when we are seeing more and more of our membership utilizing the Club’s facilities downtown and beach side at PAG. by Dr. Jody Abrams, Regatta General

This past month, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club had the distinct honor of hosting the J/70 World Championships. The event may have drawn to a close, but the memories from the event will undoubtedly linger for years to come.

T

he week was marked by exceptional on-water competition, showcasing the prowess of the world's top J/70 sailors. The Tampa Bay waters played host to thrilling races, with each tack and gybe a testament to the dedication and skill of the participants. The event kickstarted with measurement inspections, October 27th through October 30th. The opening ceremonies were hosted on the evening of October 30th, the event was MCed by our very own Ed Baird and featured guest appearances from the Mayor, Coast Guard Captain, and our very own youth sailors. A true celebration of all the counties in attendance. Racing commenced on Tuesday, October 31st and continued through Saturday, November 4th. Ten races were completed throughout the event in moderate to high breeze ranges; proving sailors with exhilarating adventures on Tampa Bay. Beyond the races, the social events throughout the week added a special vibrancy to our Club. Gatherings at the Clubhouse and lively parties by the waterfront echoed with the laughter and shared stories of sailors and enthusiasts from around the world. It was a celebration of not just competition but also the warm community that defines the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. I would like to extend a THANK YOU to the amazing planning committee who was tasked with organizing the event and a THANK YOU to our amazing team of Club members who volunteered their time on and off the water, making the event a huge success. Your dedication and enthusiasm have been the wind in our sails, propelling the St. Petersburg Yacht Club to be not just a venue but a community that embodies the spirit of sailing. As we reflect on the success of the 2023 J/70 World Championships, we look forward to carrying this momentum forward into the 2024 season. PAGE 8 | FEATURED ARTICLE

The 14th Annual by Gloria Davis

St. Petersburg

T

he 14th Annual St Petersburg Classic Regatta which included twenty boats, all built before 2004, raced on a gorgeous day in Tampa Bay. They also competed for the “Good Neighbor” award by collecting the most donations for Pinellas’ Neighborly historic “Meals on Wheels” program. Return of the "SORC"

T

St. Petersburg to Lauderdale Race

he dream of running this race again and building offshore events in the Gulf of Mexico was finally realized on November 8th when 20 yachts took off from Tampa Bay, and out through the Sky Bridge, to test their speed and tactical skills over the storied St. Petersburg to Lauderdale race course.

First to finish and winner of the Commodore Robert B. Lassing Memorial Trophy was 'Privateer', the Cookson 50 sailed by Ron O’Hanley. ORC1 Class winner and 7th in the ORC fleet was Chris Saxton sailing 'Vortices', a J125. The ORC1 class, first around Rebecca Shoal faced left breeze and a pure upwind to the Key West RW buoy, where as the slower boats were able to sail less distance. Texas based boats 'KENAI' and 'BEAR' after a long duel finished 1st and 2nd in ORC2 and in the ORC Fleet. ORC3 winner Zig Zag and current holder of the SORC Islands in the Stream Series took 3rd in fleet. The PHRF fleet enjoyed a third night offshore and brought in the final finisher 'Freedom of Hamble' with a three day 18 min elapsed time. The fleet winner in PHRF was 'Petisa' a Salona 44 sailed by Harold Brandon.

KENAI

With the results in: Chris and Karen Lewis sailing J44 'Kenai' will be the first engraving on the LL “Lew” McMasters Memorial Trophy since 1990. The full results are available at: http://www.spyc.org/regattas and on social media - https://www.facebook.com/sorcsailing. Storm Trysail Club introduced a two boat team award and this was won by Team ZKZ - 'KENAI' and 'Zig Zag'. These two boats will battle it out in the Islands in the Stream Series having won the series for the last three years between them. However, many others could win overall as the ORC fleet is highly competitive and the racing quite tactical. The event was a success and is here to stay and will run again in 2024. So start planning now to come down (or over) to the warm blue waters and enjoy amazing hospitality at SPYC and LYC for a challenging fun event. A big thanks has to go to supporters of this race and the SORC series: North Sails, Goslings, 81Bay Breweries, Parkway Chevrolet/Team Bear and Team Hooligan.

SALTWATER ANGLERS by Capt. Wayne Andrews

T

hank you to all participants and sponsors of the 2023 SPYC Fishing Tournament. We had eight boats competing and some sporty weather. The high winds offshore prevented any early offshore departures, so most boats started in the bay/intercoastal and a few brave souls ventured out offshore late in the morning. The results once again demonstrated that anyone could win this tournament.

Third place was won by a veteran from previous tournaments fishing his own boat for the first time in this event. Captain Neal Crosson’s team landed a 1st and 2nd place Sea Trout and a second place Mangrove Snapper for a total of seven points. Second place was won by team Rum Bunctious captained by David Menneke, a regular participant and sponsor - Florida Family Cremations. David and his all-female crew landed a 1st place Grunt, 2nd place Porgy and Yellowtail Snapper, and a 3rd place Spanish Mackerel for a total of eight points. Very close! Lisa, with Captain Menneke, took top Female Angler with a total of five points, edging out a female Junior Angler who fished with Captain Gary Spivack and took the prize for Junior Angler.

Winning team Captained by PC Tom Wallace

2nd Place team Rum Bunctious and top Female Angler, Lisa The winning team, Captained by PC Tom Wallace scored a "trifecta" in the event, having only participated in the tournament three times and winning each time! Tom and his son John almost had a perfect score only missing out by one point with a 2nd place Spanish Mackerel. The team had five 1st place fish - Gag Grouper, Trigger Fish, Mangrove Snapper, Porgy and Yellowtail Snapper for a total of seventeen points! We had two Past Commodore's and their sons fishing in the tournament, PC Fred Bickley and his son, Fred, also joined the event. PC Wallace and son with PC Bickley and son multi-generational event!

The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at one of our next meetings on December 13th and January 10th, or sign up on www. SPYCfish.com and get on the email list.

Get in on the FUN! Its not too early to sign up for next year's BIG EVENT! Boat or no boat let me know and we’ll find a spot.

SALTY

SISTERS by Carol Hansen

O

ctober was a fun and busy month for the Salty Sisters. Our new Co-Captain Beverly Smoak started the sailing season off with a morning of capsize drills, self-rescues, line heaving, and 420 rigging. Seventeen Salties, split into three different groups, capsized and righted Prams, practiced climbing into the Safety Boat, and under the tutelage of PC Els Wiemken and Lori Ledbeader, learned the ins and outs of rigging 420s. The next week was another great time out on the water. The weather was perfect for everyone to get out and try their hand at sailing in a 420, sailing Ideal 18s, or just brushing up on Race Committee skills.

420's Co-Captain Beveryl Smoak

Jennifer Parramore & Bijie Ding

Congratulations to Virginia Campbell, Class of 2022, as she earned her “Flipper” charm after her dunk into the bay when her Ideal “slipped out from under her”! Thanks to Skipper Helen Larsen and Kathy Ahern, whose water rescue quickly found her safely back in the boat and with a great story to tell. On October 19th, KT Trudeau organized a “coven” of Salty Sisters, donning their witch’s hats, spent the evening riding around the city or St. Petersburg on the Ghost Trolley. Brandy, their spiritual leader, hosted the historical tour, cluing them in on all the spirits that wander the area. A great time was had by all, and they learned some very interesting things about the city we live in.

RIDERS CLUB

by James Irwin have found over the years that many boaters also love to ride motorcycles. We all love to feel the wind in our face. (Maybe that’s why dogs love to stick their heads out of car windows.)

The bond of friendship runs deep with motorcycle enthusiasts. Be it a breakfast ride, a night ride, or a long road trip, motorcyclists are always up for it. When you ride a motorcycle, most riders wave to each other even when they don’t know the other person. No matter which motorcycle you ride or which part of the country you’re from, there is always the bond of brotherhood or sisterhood that brings motorcyclists together. We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled the continents on motorcycles together. PAGE 34 | CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB

We are currently in discussion to decide where to plan the next event. Cuba and Peru are the current options. We welcome everyone at SPYC to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did. The spirit of friendship and community is second to none. MahJonng is played every Monday, and Sharon Ogan can arrange a beginners table if you’re a newbie. It looks harder than it is! Robin Bolinski is selecting great restaurants around town for Lunch Bunch. Patsy Warmack has chosen great books for the Literary Circle. Barbara Calhoun is looking for more bridge players for the Bridge Gals—it’s “casual” bridge, not high stress! BROAD REACHERS O by Juliette Clark, Race Captain

ctober was a busy month for the Broad Reachers. Eight sailors opened the month with a “distance” sail around Vina Del Mar Island, which took about 3 hours in the prams. It was the inaugural sail for our newest member, Musa Jaman.

On October 13th, the Broad Reachers celebrated the 51st Annual Regatta for the Commodore Lucas Trophy. Fourteen sailors from FWSA clubs competed for the trophy, including representatives from the Windlasses, Salty Sisters, Rhumb Runners, Mainsheet Mamas, Luffing Lassies, Dinghy Dames, Broad Reachers, and Bow Chasers. Organizer Carol Hansen was happy that the foul weather blew out prior to race day. PRO Gloria Davis ran three Olympic course races in very light air. Sailors, spectators, and Race Committee members stayed for a special lunch at PAG, followed by awards. We finished up our jam-packed month with a Halloween Costume Regatta on October 28th. We even turned our orange buoys into Jack O’ Lanterns! Joanne Simmons took home the newly minted perpetual trophy. Juliette Clark placed second, and Carol Hansen was third. We had a festive lunch, and, of course, Halloween candy was provided to all the participants.

Women of all sailing ability are invited to try us out. We sail most Saturday mornings out of PAG. For more information contact our Captain, Gloria Davis: gloriadavis1200@gmail.com

s part of their Alaska2.0 journey this summer, Angela & Brian Kowalik traveled over 14,000 miles in the RV, and stopped at 64 campgrounds during their 5 month trip. From the Dawn Patrol, the Drone light show, the Mass Ascension, and Special Shapes, it was spectacular. What a great way to celebrate Angela’s Birthday (she was born there as well) and to experience the annular solar eclipse!
