Hello Friends.....It was with great sadness that we recognized the loss of Charley Morgan in January. Mr. Morgan was a true legend in the sailing community and has played a major role in the history of our Club. Many may not be aware that the Heritage Lounge was named for his vessel Heritage which he designed, built, and skippered in the Americas Cup. The Club honored Mr. Morgan by flying the burgee at half-mast for one week. The sounding of eight bells and a moment of silence was observed at the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors meetings in January. Please see page 11 for details about a special Legacy Celebration for Charley being hosted by the SPYC on February 28th.

On a brighter note, the Blessing of the Fleet was held on January 22nd with an unusually large contingent of boats participating this year. The annual blessing is a treasured and longstanding SPYC tradition. Thank you to Fleet Captain Kevin Cross for organizing and planning this event.

In January, the Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus appreciation party was held. In addition, a new member event was held. Lots of activities for the new year are coming up. We are looking forward to the Grand Prix event in March and the St. Petersburg Motor Classic will be held on Sunday, February 5th. And of course, don’t forget about Valentine’s Day! Members can enjoy specials leading up to this event.

On the sailing front, the Valentine’s Day Regatta, showcasing our Junior Sailors, will be held on February 11th and 12th. Our largest event yet, the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series will be held on February 17th - 19th.

Your Board of Directors and Committees have been quite busy. The Marina Oversight Committee, chaired by Fred Higham, is anxiously awaiting the final bids for the redevelopment of the downtown marina. The Master Facilities Planning Committee, chaired by Past Commodore Waters, has continued with its evaluation of options for the future of our downtown facility. Please be patient as much work remains to be done.

I am happy to report that interest in membership in our Club continues to be strong. Hope to see you around the Club.

Cordially,

Brian K. Smith, Commodore
