CHAPTER FOUR

T

COMMODORE’S LOG

he Club is the place to be right now with lots of activities to fit everyone’s taste, and I’m not just talking about the menu! Speaking of the menu...I hope you have sampled the new weekly specials that center around comfort food. These items are a huge hit with the membership and are often selling out. Additionally, when you dine at the Club I urge you to fill out a comment card. Each of these are thoroughly reviewed by management and serve as a report card for food quality and service. They are also circulated at the Board meetings. To make this process easier the Club now offers a QR code that you can scan with your phone and complete a comment card electronically. Please take a moment to do this. I am excited to announce a new history tour of our Club starting this month. Late last year I asked our Club Historian, Trisha Birkenstock, if she would develop a walking tour of the Club. We have so much history and if you are like me, you walk past trophy cases, plaques, pictures, burgees and the like every time we are in the Club and have no idea what most of these things represent. She was kind enough to take this project on and is ready to roll it out. Please look for further information on this and sign up, you’ll be amazed at what you will learn about our incredible SPYC!

Mark your calendars for more racing in February including the ILCA Midwinters East the beginning of the month, the Valentine’s Day Regatta on February 10th & 11th and finally the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series (formally the NOOD) on February the 16th - 18th. Also, don’t miss the St. Petersburg Motor Classic car show in South Straub Park on February 4th. Just a quick update on several projects around the Club; new front doors for the Compass Room have been ordered and are expected to be installed this month. The downtown marina project is now full speed ahead with our contractor finishing up demolition this month and starting to piece together all those dock sections that have been floating around in our marina. The Building Reconstruction Oversight Committee continues to move along identifying easements, height restrictions, code compliance, ingress and egress and the like to establish a maximum building footprint and layout for our new Clubhouse. A “sun study” was even recently completed to identify the optimal location for the rooftop swimming pool, who knew? Please make this month a time to unwind from the holidays and enjoy all SPYC has to offer. See you at the Club……

We are fully immersed in regatta season right now. I hope you were able to take in the Master Driver Team Race and our own Club Championship in January.

Cordially,

ebruary is here and with that comes the beginning of our busy Spring season ahead with tons of fun! In addition to our Regattas being in full swing, we have a full schedule of exciting on the water races coming up. Our "snow bird" members are back, and the northern states are flocking to beautiful Florida. With all of this comes increased usage of our Club facilities. Please check the Club Calendar and Member Central at the website, your weekly E-news, and Smooth Sailing so that you can plan appropriately. When dining we ask for your patience and to please make reservations where needed. I’m halfway through my third year here at SPYC and it continues to amaze me the complexity of this Club. The number of members, facilities, activities and what it takes to manage this great Club is astounding. Here are some facts that you may find interesting regarding the Sailing Center.

Did You Know? » Sailing Center: Established 1919 – 1976 City of St. Petersburg & SPYC Partnership. » Junior Sailing Team: 70 + Active Weekly Participants – World Champion, National Championships, Colligate All-Americans, Olympic Gold Medalist, America’s Cup Skipper – CMAA Top Junior Sailing Program. » Regattas: 35 + Regattas each year – 1,900 boats registered with over 5,000 Participants – 100 + Race Committee Volunteers and St. Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy for Exceptional Race Management, » Community Sailing: Membership open to the public – 350 + Adults take classes yearly – 2,103 Ideal Usages – Low-Cost access to sailing. » Adaptive Sailing: City improvements mid 1990’s – American’s Disabled Regatta – All Children’s Hospital – Landon’s Legacy – Access Dinghies. » Summer Camps: 450 - 500 Campers – 5 – 7 Years old “Harbor Mice” – Optimist Dinghies, 420’s, Ideals – SPYC Coaches. » Special Events/Partnerships: YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg – City’s Therapeutic Recreation Department – Warrior Sailing Program – US Sail & Power Squadron – St. Petersburg Sailing Association. The above fun facts are just a few reasons we must remember - Membership in a fine club is an earned privilege, an opportunity to spend quality time with people who share your values, interests, and morales; a place where prospective members/spouses meet, where families safely engage in recreational and social activities. As we continue to go through this process in becoming the best that SPYC can be we need to really reflect on what made us the great Club that we are. That being its rich history in sailing, a community social hub where friends and families alike can gather while enjoying each other’s company, a safe haven in troubling times...just to name a few. With a unique position with multiple locations there is even more of a reason in understanding the Club's value, and privilege in belonging. In closing, we are all set for a few very active months ahead, all areas and facilities will be in full utilization mode. Please make reservations early to help us prepare for what is ahead. I look forward to seeing everyone around our various facilities! Cheers - General Manager, COO

Master Driver

Team Race Regatta by Janet Walker, Regatta Chair

S

PYC was proud to host the sixteenth Annual Master Driver Team Race Regatta from January 12th - 14th. Five teams of six sailors each came from New York YC, Seawanhaka Corinthian YC, Southern YC, Annapolis YC, plus SPYC to compete in this “ 2 boat on 2 boat” team racing competition in J/70s on Tampa Bay. Three complete round robins were sailed over the weekend in blustery, cold conditions. It is always exciting to watch as two J/70s battle competitively against an opposing team of two J/70s on a short windward leeward course, taking 9 to 15 minutes to complete a flight. Four umpires headed by Lance Smotherman, plus Eric Johnson, Rob Rowlands and Phil Pape kept order on the course. Seawanhaka Corinthian YC came in first again this year followed closely by SPYC. A competitive match is on for next year. Results can be found by visiting the SPYC website and clicking on Regattas then MDTR. Our two SPYC skippers were Mitchell Rogers and David Mendelblatt with their respective crew of John Wallace, Kevin Reali, Matt Braun and Kai Cox. Our PRO was Alan Capellin, with a race committee of Matt Bryant & Karen Park (mark setters), plus Trish Smotherman, Gina Bowden Pierce, Barb Mehaffey, Bosun Kyle Runnfeldt, plus Janet Walker (Regatta Chair) on Coast Pilot. Rich and Char Doyle, the founders of this regatta, kept tabs on us from shore. Many thank go to the SPYC Sailing center and the SPYC staff for making this regatta a success. ON THE WATER | PAGE 7

Who are the NautiCats?

T

he NautiCats at SPYC will be celebrating their 18th season this year! This talented group of SPYC members have accumulated songs over the years for all occasions. They perform at the Downtown Club (4th of July, Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Cruising Fleet, Woman's Club) as well as events at Pass-a-Grille. The NautiCats also perform at local organizations and retirement communities. Not only the enthusiastic reception given them from their audiences, but also singing at weekly practices at the Club, provides a unique sense of satisfaction and esprit de corps for the 25 members of the NautiCats, both women and men. New members are always welcome, and if you play an instrument, you are encouraged to join in. Practices are held at the Downtown Clubhouse every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 - 5:00 pm, and are generally followed by Happy Hour in the Heritage Lounge.

For questions, or to sign up, please contact Judy McFadden, the NautiCat Founder at: (727) 455-9793 or Judyp@tampabay.rr.com. OTHER INFORMATION | PAGE 9

Fudge Stuffed Blondies Serves 6-8 people

INGREDIENTS

For the filling...

• 1 1/4 cups (213 grams) semisweet chocolate chips • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

For the Blondies... 1 Stick Unsalted Butter, melted • 1 Cup Light Brown Sugar • 1 Large Egg • 1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract • 1/8 Tsp. Fine Salt • 1 Cup All-purpose Flour

PAGE 10 | CULINARY CORNER

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line an 8 by 8-inch pan with foil or parchment. Spray with nonstick cooking spray. 2. In a small saucepan set over low heat combine the condensed milk, chocolate chips, and butter. Heat, stirring often, until melted and smooth. Let cool. 3. In a large bowl stir together the butter and sugar. Stir in the egg and vanilla until smooth. Add in the salt and flour and stir until just combined. The mixture will be thick. 4. Spread half of the batter into the bottom of the prepared pan. Scoop and flatten the fudge mixture evenly over the dough. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Spread the remaining batter over the fudge evenly to cover completely. 5. Bake for 25 minutes, or until lightly golden on the outside but still fudgy and moist on the inside. It’s better to under-bake than over-bake here! Let cool completely before cutting. Enjoy!

SALTY SISTERS by Carol Hansen

Christmas Informal Lunch

ecember is always a fun and exciting month for the Salty Sisters. We may not sail each week, but we do have fun including the Annual Candy Cane Regatta and the Salty Sister Christmas Party, where the new class is introduced. As tradition goes, the Class of 2022 performed a skit to introduce themselves. They wrote and sang their own songs accompanied by a guest guitarist (Josh from the Sailing Center.) We then welcomed the Docktailers, Class of 2022: Taryn Bergstrom, Virginia Campbell, Emily Kennedy, Kim Kuruzovich, Gisela Marsano, Wendy Saks, Anna Streufert, and Shelly Watkins.

KT Trudeau gathered a group of 15 Salties for a December land cruise to PC Carol Hansen’s home to see her snow village “Hansenville” in action. After a champagne toast, the Salties headed off to the Tiki Docks for lunch. The Wednesday before Christmas, the Salty Sisters had an impromptu lunch in the Heritage Lounge. Always a good time with our Sisters! PC Dee Gill organized a group of Salty Sisters, their sons & Briny Brothers along with some friends for a great of day sailing in J70’s. Dee and her Race Committee set up a racecourse and a fun day was had by all.

RIDERS CLUB

by James Irwin

appy February! The bond of friendship runs deep with motorcycle enthusiasts. Be it a breakfast ride, a night ride, or a long road trip, motorcyclists are always up for it. When you ride a motorcycle, most riders wave to each other even when they don’t know the other person. No matter which motorcycle you ride or which part of the country you’re from, there is always the bond of brotherhood or sisterhood that brings motorcyclists together. We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled the continents on motorcycles together. We are currently in discussion to decide where to plan the next event. Cuba and Peru are the current options. PAGE 22 | CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB

We welcome everyone at SPYC to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did. The spirit of friendship and community is second to none. To join our group and to keep updated with our events, please contact: James Irwin at: JamesIrwin1231@gmail.com

he Wine Club at SPYC was launched in May 2022. What started as a relatively small group has been growing since that time. This "Club Within the Club" is specifically focused on wine education and exploration of wines from boutique and smaller production wineries. We meet six times a year on the first Thursday of every other month. The selected wines at each meeting are paired with gourmet tasting plates created by the SPYC culinary team. CRUISING

FLEET by Debbie Storey, Fleet Captain

Boomer

Port Directors

We had a great turnout for our January 5th luncheon where we welcomed new members and enjoyed hearing from Brendon “Boomer” Baumeister, Assistant Marine Superintendent, Florida Institute of Oceanography, and Captain of the R/V Weatherbird II. At the meeting, we reviewed plans for our two-week Commodore’s Cruise in late April and late May. This year’s cruise includes an option for an extended trip to Key West, with many cruisers traveling on to the Bahamas together. Paul and Gini Berry have organized our 2024 Commodore’s Cruise shirts and are taking orders until February 24th. Sign-ups for the Commodore’s Cruise can be made by contacting me at fleet. captain@spyc.org. On January 11th, the Cruising Fleet made it's 2nd annual cruise to the Tampa Convention Center and a Tampa Bay Lightning game. Thirty-four cruisers gathered for dinner at Harpoon Harry’s prior to the game, and then represented the SPYC in cheering on the Bolts to their victory! January 27th we held the Annual Vessel Safety Checks by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Unfortunately this year, due to circumstances beyond our control, the Annual Blessing of the Fleet was cancelled. However, we look forward to the Blessing next year at our new floating docks!

T

he fall and early winter brought us nearperfect boating weather. The cruise to Marina Jacks in early December was heavenly, with flat seas and warm temperatures. A highlight of the weekend was cruisers all gathering on Jeff and Sue Cooper’s boat, "Good Timing”, Saturday evening to watch the amazing Sarasota Holiday Parade of Boats before walking downtown to Duvaul’s for dinner. Thanks to Port Directors Chris & Ben Roddey for organizing a beautiful, festive weekend to kick off the holidays. Since then, we’ve all felt the effects of the El Nino winter in St. Pete. Day Trippers enjoyed an outing on December 28th, as Jay Rice & Kelly Lee McFrederick graciously opened their gorgeous home to host a potluck lunch. Cruisers didn’t let the cold, rainy day dampen our spirits. Close to 40 Cruising Fleet members left their boats at their docks and traveled by iron dinghy to enjoy some spirited time together.

BROAD REACHERS by Juliette Clark, Race Captain

D

ecember was a relatively quiet month for the Broad Reachers. As we reported last month, our Santa Hat race was a bust due to light winds and foul current. We had the Friendship Regatta scheduled with the Salty Sisters for December 9th, but the Salties were a bit overscheduled and we had trouble fielding enough sailors. As it turns out, the weather would not have cooperated for us anyway. We wrapped up the year with a planning meeting, followed by our annual holiday party and gift exchange. We have a lot planned for the remainder of this season, including fun races for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter. In between, we will be running our rabbit race series. Speaking of the Salty Sisters, their Holiday Regatta managed to overcome the very light winds in the morning. Juliette Clark represented the Broad Reachers in her Sunfish. Joanne Simmons sailed as a Broad Reacher on an Ideal 18 team. Great job Salties, as a good time was had by all. Whether you have sailing experience or not, “Come, Sail Away” with us! Don’t let our racing intimidate you, it’s all in good fun, and we will help you learn to sail a pram.

RV LAND CRUISERS NEWS

by Angela Kowalik Wagon Master

W

here has the time gone? It’s been four years since our first outing in February 2020. The time and year is easy to remember because it was leap year, just like this year. And also the year that changed a lot of things for a lot of people. But that’s behind us now, we keep on truckin’. A “Spring Fling” could be around the corner. And this September will be the 5th Anniversary of the formation of the RV Land Cruisers! So we look forward to each and every adventure. Take the journey, wherever it may be. The ones to regret are the ones not taken. There’s so much to see out there, even if it’s close to home. Enjoy the journey….

n the evening of November 9th we held our annual wild game dinner. Select wild game birds gathered during Wing Shooter hunting trips comprised the main course. Hosted at the home of Money Man (AKA Jack Cartier) with a repeat performance by head cook Both Barrels (AKA Wayne Andrews). As head cook Both Barrels was responsible for the selection, preparation and grilling of our wild game entries while also managing the sides. This later task was instrumental in volume control, a problem which had previous plagued this event.

Our side selections were: mac & cheese by True Pair (John Kollar), dirty rice by Iceman (Willy Bain), collard greens by Dan Gross and black eyed peas by Fred Bickley. Assigned sides (not present at the September planning session) were: corn bread by Bourbon (Kent Wilson) and empanadas by Disruptor (Hermann Amaya). Fine Cuban cigars and a wide variety of fine beverages were enjoyed by all while we dined poolside in Money Man’s backyard.

by Dr. Patsy Warmack, President February 1st: Bob & Dori Arrington, The Canals of The Netherlands. Join the Arrington’s as they explore the Netherlands on assignment for PassageMaker magazine. The couple discovered unique villages and hidden gems as they traveled the backroads and canals visiting boat builders for a PassageMaker article. The ancient walled city of des Hertogen Bosch, colloquially known as “Den Bosch” turned out to be fascinating. Den Bosch has restored and maintained a system of underground canals, unlike any other in Europe. March 7th: Joe & Theresa DiVito, Digging Deep in the City of Jerusalem. Join the DiVito’s while they reveal Jerusalem and the origins of the Temple, the underground excavations beneath the Wailing Wall and much more. April 4th: Tricia Billings, Around the World in 9 Years! Tricia Billings and her husband sailed around the world on their 47’7 Bristol Sailboat for nine years. Some of the highlights were working on a Black Pearl Farm in French Polynesia, hiking up the mountains in Vanuatu, and playing with the Orangutans in Borneo. Let’s be sure to ask Tricia how the sail around Cape of Good Hope in South Africa was. May 2nd: Joel Tranum, Maine and Canada on the Inside. Between May 22 and July 9, 2023, Joel and Catherine Tranum ran their 47' Back Cove Serenity from Portland, Maine to Lock 34 at Fellon Falls, Ontario and return, via New York, Montreal, Ottawa and Oswego New York. In all they ran five separate canal systems (Champlain, Chambly, St. Lawrence Seaway, the Rideau, the Trent Severn and the Erie) including 147 locks, 3 major river systems and two major lakes, for a total run of 2,475 miles in just over 7 weeks.
