CHAPTER THREE
COMMODORE’S LOG
Hello Friends.....Welcome to 2023! December was quite the busy month at the Club with all of the traditional holiday festivities taking place including the Gingerbread House Decorating, the Santa Parade and the Lighting of the Yachts. A great addition to the Lighting of the Yachts was an appearance by our very own Nauticats who added merriment by entertaining us with traditional holiday music.
The White Elephant/Ugly Sweater Party was a blast, and the Dazzler Christmas Show again did not disappoint. The holiday season was capped off with the much-anticipated Children’s Christmas Brunch featuring an appearance by Santa Claus. We rang in the new year with the New Year’s Celebration followed by the Complimentary Eggnog Party.
2023 will prove to be an important year for our Club. The final focus group meeting was held on December 7th. Soon the Master Facilities Plan Committee will digest all of the information received from these meetings and will begin to refine some of the ideas gathered. Stay tuned for more information on these developments.
Events not to be missed include the Blessing of the Fleet, a time-honored Club tradition, on Sunday, January 22nd. Andy Evans and his committee are hard at work to make the St. Pete Motor Classic a spectacular event scheduled for February 5th. The Entertainment Committee has scheduled a Flag and Board Member "Happy Hour Mix & Mingle" for Friday, January 6th including hors d'oeuvre.
A number of important regattas will be held in the coming months; John Jennings Memorial Regatta will be held January 7/8, the Master Driver Team Race will be held January 14/15, and the Valentine’s Day Regatta, showcasing our Junior Sailors, will be held on February 11/12.
Happy New Year! Let’s toast to yesterday’s achievements and tomorrow’s bright future. Wishing you health, wealth, and happiness in the new year ahead.
Cordially, Brian K. Smith, Commodore
Mission Statement: The St. Petersburg Yacht Club provides preeminent yachting and social experiences for members, their families and guests, and honors the Club’s rich yachting heritage in a welcoming environment.
General Manager’s Log
by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCMHappy New Year! I hope each of you had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends alike. 2022 continued to be challenging for other reasons than Covid but, much improved when it comes to member usage and engagement.
The Club continues to be that safe haven for our membership. Clubs usage was up as was à la carte dining, in addition to banquets being as strong as ever. Marina activities were also very active. It is now 2023, a year in which we will exceed your expectations and continue to create “Member Delight”. This is also the time of year to reflect on all the great things we have accomplished as well as those areas we can improve upon. As we prepare to set sail in the New Year our commitment is to serve the needs of our entire membership and incorporate fun filled, value driven and diverse activities for all to enjoy.
Our Dock Project is moving along as planned as we have sent out RFP’s to manufacturers as well as general contractors to get quotes for the Marina Replacement Project. There are a lot of moving parts to this plan, so we want to be very diligent in vetting all proposals we receive. As with any project we do around the Club we want to make sure we have the best quality product at a fair and competitive price. More to come on this project soon.
Master Plan – This is a marathon not a sprint – timeline will most likely be pushed back to get the appropriate feedback from the membership. As with the Dock Project we want to make sure everyone has the facts and the proper information to make an educated and mindful decision on what the future of the Club should look like. All focus group sessions are now complete and we are reviewing all the responses we have received from the questionnaire that was sent out to those who attended. Moving forward we will be drafting a letter to the entire membership to educate the members where we have been, where we are and what it will take to get where we feel we should be; for betterment of the Club's future.
In closing, I want to thank each of you for yet another great year, hoping each of you have a wonderful holiday season and are geared up for an amazing 2023. I want to thank our awesome staff as well. Without them we do not have the dynamic Club that we do. I look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!

SPYC Club Championship 2022
Earlier this year Hurricane Ian postponed the 2022 Commodore Bruce Watters Club Sailing Championship Regatta . The event was rescheduled for Saturday, December 17th. Eight SPYC member teams joined us on the water for four races in the fleet of J/70s. The sailors did not disappoint with aggressive starts, competitive mark roundings and exciting finishes….all for the coveted grand prize of bragging rights and the SPYC Club Champion Parking Spot!
Junior Sailing Update
by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing DirectorOver Thanksgiving weekend, nine SPYC Opti sailors and their families traveled to New Orleans Louisiana for the 2022 USODA Midwinter Championships which also served as the 2023 Spring Team Qualifier. With over 200 sailors in attendance the competition was sure to be stiff.
Unfortunately, mother nature did not cooperate and only 5 races were sailed over the 3 days of racing, leaving sailors with no drop race. John Hartney was our top performer finishing in 39th place overall including a Black Flag in race two of the series. Also competing for SPYC were Chris Shaffer, Finn Cox, Ethan Cox, Scarlett Bizouarn, Reece Bizouarn, Leah Abrams, Pete Caputo and Talon Schenk
Over the Thanksgiving weekend our SPYC Green Fleet Race Team competed in the annual Davis Island Yacht Club Thanksgiving Regatta . SPYC was well represented with William Weidner in 2nd, Tucker Gowens in 3rd, Leo Pallante in 5th, Liam McFadden Stewart in 10th, Nico Sansone in 11th and Daniel Algren in 13th. Also competing for SPYC were Adeline Dozark, Clara Reali, Bailey Bridge, Ronan Madigan and Claire Dunlop . SPYC’s Thomas Weidner also took home first place overall in the small but competitive Opti RWB fleet.
Over the weekend of December 3-4, our SPYC Laser sailors traveled south to compete in the Laser District 13 Championship hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. In the 40 boat Laser 4.7 fleet Rosie Simpson and Gloria Privis finished in 4th and 5th place overall. In the 68 Laser Radial Fleet Jan Mistak was our top finisher in 9th place overall. Also competing for SPYC were Dorothy, Adam and Reid Mendelblatt, Ryder and Reese Ellis, Jad Aberdrabbo, Sophia Fuller, Sidney Moyer, Callen Burnett, Jackson Lee, Wesley Wood, Preston and Peyton Weaver, Josh and Zach O’Connor, Bradley Barnum, Bella Shakespeare and Jack Carter.
SPYC once again hosted the J/70 Youth National Championship over the weekend of November 18-20. Nine, under 21, J/70 teams from around the country were selected by resume to compete in this prestigious event. SPYC was represented by the team of Callen Burnett, John Hartney, Ian Brown and Ian Iles who finished in 3rd place overall. Also competing in the event were SPYC Alumni - Emily Allen, Emma Shakespeare and Heidi Hicks. The event was won by Griggs Diemar from the Coral Reef Yacht Club.
Additionally over the weekend of December 3-4 our SPYC Opti RWB Team competed in the USA Junior Olympic Regatta hosted by the US Sailing Center of Martin County. SPYC’s John Hartney was out top performer finishing in 7th place overall. Also competing were Chris Shaffer, Dalton Cellemare, Thomas Weidner, Scarlett Bizouarn, Finn Cox, Pete Caputo and Cooper Lee .
The weekend prior, SPYC hosted the first ever J/70 Mixed Plus Championships where competing teams must be composed of at least 50 percent females. Our SPYC Junior Sailors worked hard to create new teams that qualified under the regatta rules and showed that they can compete with some of the best Mixed Plus in the country. Competing in the event were Callen Burnett, Peyton Weaver, Sophia Fuller, Preston Weaver, Rosie Simpson, Gloria Privis and Logan Rimel .
achting Information Committee
by: Tim Snyder, Committee ChairThe Heritage Lounge sports photos of events that sailors have associated with SPYC for decades, but one has been hibernating for a while.
Preliminary discussions are underway for the Southern Ocean Racing Conference to return to western Florida in 2023 with a St. Pete to Ft. Lauderdale race.
The 400-mile course would kick off the 2023-2024 SORC season with a start in November. In recent years SORC has consisted of either 4 or 5 races starting off Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. Skippers from other Gulf Coast clubs may organize a feeder race to St. Pete after the Texas’ Harvest Moon Regatta.
The Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta (formerly known as the NOOD) series kicks off in February over Presidents’ Day weekend. SPYC had historically hosted the event over Valentine’s weekend, so the change of weekend last year may have enabled the impressive count of 213 entries! And volunteers to help us host the event are always welcomed.
The Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony is set for Tuesday, April 4th . The Awards Committee may still be able to accept nominations, so contact Susan Snyder ( susansnyder33705@gmail.com ) if you’ve been putting off recognizing one of our fellow members.

The
North Gulf North Gulf Challenge
by Joseph TothWe’re excited to announce the second running of the Saint Petersburg to Pensacola regatta, The North Gulf Challenge , which takes place on March 20, 2023 . Registration is now open for competitors to register for the event. The 317 nautical mile race will be managed by SPYC in partnership with the Pensacola Yacht Club , who will host the fleet while in Pensacola at the finish.
The race aims to suit a wide range of yachts and crew and provide competitors with the experience and challenges of offshore ocean racing, with some easier logistics than international races. This race has the challenge of offshore racing but a finish that family can drive to.
Before racing begins SPYC will host a party open to all competitors, friends and family and all SPYC members to help see the racers off. After the race there will be a welcome reception followed by an awards dinner and party hosted by the Pensacola Yacht Club . The race is open to ORC and PHRF Racer/Cruiser, Cruising and Multi-Hull classes.

1st SPYC Bicycle Ride was a "Fun" Success!
by Douglas TownesThe SPYC bicycle rides are off to a great start! Over seven members joined the group for a 25 mile ride to Gulfport and back on November 15th. After the ride, we had a delicious lunch and discussed future rides for this group. Our second ride was December 15th from the PAG clubhouse to Fort De Soto and back. Next Ride: January 10th to/from Weedon Island Preserve - We meet at 10:00 am in the lower level of the downtown SPYC parking garage if you want to join us. During our social time on November 15th, several items were agreed upon by those attending:
1.Our rides are open to regular bikes as well as ebikes.
2.We will have a regularly scheduled ride on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. A 2nd monthly ride may be planned in the future for a Saturday or Sunday so our working members can join the fun.
3.Rides will be in planned in the 25-30 mile distance with speeds of 11-13 mph range. This can change as agreed upon by the riders. Bike trails/paths are preferred but many rides will include some street riding
4.A social gathering with optional lunch will be included at the end of each ride. Besides providing a social atmosphere where members can get to know each other better, this time will also allow us to plan our future rides.
5.Douglas Townes will be responsible for posting details of future rides as well as updates from previous rides. Douglas is looking for another rider to assist with this function.
If you have any special requests or suggestions please contact Douglas. If you would like to join us on our January 10 ride, please send an email to Douglas (det949@ mindspring.com). Sorry but our photos from the November 15 ride got lost in cyberspace. Photos from previous rides will be posted along with announcements about our future rides.

Ikebana ( 生け花, 活け花 ) "arranging flowers" or "making flowers alive") is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is also known as kadō (華道 , "way of flowers"). The tradition dates back to Heian period, when floral offerings were made at altars. Later, flower arrangements were instead used to adorn the tokonoma (alcove) of a traditional Japanese home.
Ikebana reached its first zenith in the 16th century under the influence of Buddhist tea masters and has grown over the centuries, with numerous distinct schools extant today. Ikebana is counted as one of the three classical Japanese arts of refinement, along with kōdō for incense appreciation and chadō for tea and the tea ceremony. SALTY SISTERS
by Carol HansenBusy time for the Salty Sisters. Interclubs, trophy races, new class finishing their training, the Christmas Boutique, fall regattas, and of course, all the other activities of the Holiday Season!
First, on November 15th, Joanne Simmons, Martha Monfried, and Sandy Merrifield, Captain Dee Gill, and Marty Cochran sailed at Davis Island in the FWSA Interclub hosted by the Dinghy Dames.
Next, the Class of 2022 finished their training and sailed their first race. The Mother Ducky race, sailed in Prams, has become a new tradition for the Salty Sisters. The “Newbies” were paired up with a “Mother” and completed three short and exciting races. Boutique Chair, PC Carol Hansen announced that the Boutique was a great success this year. Carol thanked her Co-Chairs, Joanne Simmons, and Angela Kowalik and ALL the Salty Sister volunteers for their help. PC Gina Bowden-Pierce gave a shout-out to the Salty Sisters who volunteered for Race Committee at the J70 Mixed+ Regatta on November 11th -13th. Gina, Helle Getz, PC Jennifer Parramore and Terri McGough, with Molly Raymond making her RC debut. Great job Salties!!
FWSA 1st Delegate Jennifer Anderson reported on the Salty Sister’s hosted Holiday Interclub held on Tues., December 6th. There were 16 Sunfish, eight Prams, representing eight different member FWSA Clubs, and NO wind!!! With winds at 1-2, PRO Gloria Davis called the race and everyone ventured back to the Sailing Center, most under tow. Jennifer thanked all the Salty Sister volunteers, along with a few Briny Brothers for all their help.
CLUB RIDERS
by Bob Frazee, PresidentRecent lunch destinations included Groveland, Bowling Green, Palmetto, Chiefland, Bradenton and Plant City. Over lunch we discuss future rides and destinations. Our riders are actively planning longer “destination rides” in 2023 - to Bike Week in Daytona, the Canadian Maritimes and even Morocco, following on the successful 2022 rides to Columbia, Texas and North Carolina.
The SPYC Riders group took several local rides during October, November & December. The weather is now optimal to “saddle up” and explore the backroads beyond Tampa/St. Pete. We usually meet mid-morning and head either South over the Skyway bridge or North over the Gandy/Franklin bridges and quickly get out into “Old Florida”. There, the secondary state - county roads and local lanes - wind along lakes, citrus fields, farms and ranches. These back roads often have canopies of oaks and hanging moss and long vistas with herds of cattle and horses. Our local rides usually cover 200 miles, include a break for lunch and we return home mid-afternoon.
CAR CLUB
It’s been very busy in the car world, not only are we ramping up for our own show, The St Pete Motor Classic but it is the best time of year for many shows, all over the state. We were lucky enough to attend the Gasparilla Concours d’Elegance held over the weekend of December 2nd - 4th at the prestigious TOC Golf Course in North Tampa. This event features the finest classic restorations in the country. You would have to see them to understand the level of quality and superb craftsmanship that goes into these cars. We were also promoting our own show, and I had a chance to stroll the field, introducing myself and touting “Come to the Show” cards. All in all I spoke with 50+ owners and hope that this will help spread the word.
In addition there have been regular runs to the weekly gathering at Quaker Steak and Lube in Clearwater and also followed up on an invite to the Sarasota Yacht Club’s own dedicated car club called the Yacht Runners. They have a full program of meets, talks and mini-shows, I am sure we will visit again soon and of course in the meantime we have invited them to come and join us on February 5th. It's been a good time to get over to our local pro track at Sebring, had a great time at the Historic Sportscar Racing event and also some of our members participate in performance driving events, even getting the chance to run at Daytona. Hope to see you all at our show. If you have a car then please enter, if you would like to volunteer on that day just sign-up online or send me an e-mail - it’s always a rewarding day! If one of our better jokes was told some of our spouses would never come to a Wing Shooters Society Holiday Dinner again. At this year’s event, held on December 8th, an audience appropriate joke was told:
by Rich TreinenWe open our monthly meetings with a joke. At the beginning, the room is buzzing as extra yacht club staff is on hand serving drinks and taking our dinner orders. We always alert the staff that the joke is coming and that they might want to leave for two minutes. They never do and in fact as soon as the joke is over half of the staff disappear. For a very good reason the meeting minutes only report that a joke was told. If you want to hear the joke, you need to attend the meeting. The one modification to the opening joke format is our December meeting. It’s a holiday event and the only time we invite our spouses to attend. Everyone is in holiday attire and the rowdy nature of our regular meeting vanishes.
A man was experiencing significant and growing discomfort in his mouth so he went to his dentist. On examination the dentist immediately said...“I see the problem, the plate we put in 5 years ago now has corrosion. Have you changed your eating habits?” After a moment the man replied, “A couple of months ago I had my first taste of Hollandaise Sauce. I love it and now I put it on everything - breakfast, lunch and dinner.” ...... “That’s it, that stuff is causing the corrosion. But I have a fix for that, we’ll make a new one out of chrome", the dentist replied. “What’s so special about chrome?” the man asked.....To which the dentist replied, “As everybody knows, there’s no plate like chrome for the hollandaise.”
Happy New Year to all our Yacht Club friends from the Wing Shooters Society. Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters are encouraged to contact Grand Marshall Frank Robinson at fhr506@gmail.com.
RV LAND CRUISERS
by Angela Kowalik, Wagon MasterWhen the New Year comes around, it’s time to start planning new trips. Where will it be? Let’s start with the “big rocks”. Maybe an event in a certain part of the country or a special bucket list item, then work a path to get there. Then add another and so on. Before you know it, you’ve got quite a trip.
While everyone is working on their big trips for the year, here’s a few things of interest for the first quarter:
• Florida RV Super Show – this one happens every January, right here in our area at the Florida State Fairgrounds. This year it’s January 18th -22nd. RV enthusiasts from all over attend the show, whether they own an RV, are looking to buy, or just to see what is the latest in RV models or “must have” equipment. Whether you are an experienced RVer, or just getting started, it’s always a fun show. It’s like a boat show, but on land!
• Passport Club – Our own Larry & Joy Wissing will be “Reliving the Expedition” presenting their trip along the Lewis & Clark Trail to the Passport Club on March 2nd. Make a reservation to attend!
• RV Land Cruisers Meet-up – It’s time we had a meet-up! Our Spring Fling will be March 9th-12th at Keystone Heights RV Resort. Hope many of you will join us. It can be a “pre-rally” for those who might be going to the FMCA event.
• FMCA International Convention & RV Expo – Family Motor Coach Association, an RV travel club which many RVers are members of, hold 2 International Conventions each year alternating locations across the country. This year, the 106th Expo is being held in Perry, Georgia - March 15th -18th.
To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com
WINE CLUB
The newest Club Within a Club, The Wine Club, was launched in May this year and is a small group that is exclusively focused on wine education and exploration of wines from boutique and smaller production wineries. Our November meeting featured Italian wines paired with tasting plates created by Chef Christian with truffles flown in from Italy. It was an extra special event! Additionally, stop by the Commodores Room to admire the beautiful new wine lockers that have been installed for Wine Club member’s use. There are some memberships still available in the Wine Club. If you have a passion for wine experiences, please join us by inquiring at thewineclubspyc@gmail.com

by Carol HansenThe Broad Reachers hosted the 2nd Annual Peggy Lonnon Friendship Regatta for the Broad Reachers and Salty Sisters on Saturday, December 3rd. The temperature was in the upper 70’s to the low 80’s and there was very little wind. No wind was not a problem, the twelve sailors found some very creative ways to complete the three relay races. There were four teams of three sailors each and the winning team consisted of Broad Reacher Dana Kollman and Salty Sisters Bijie Ding & Mik Severini. Race Committee consisted of Regatta Chairs Janet Walker & Carol Hansen, Salty Sister Helen Larsen, and Salty/Broads Barbara Goodman & Gina Bowden-Pierce
The week prior, also with no wind, the Broads decided to do some maintenance in the trailer. Captain Carol Hansen along with Barbara Watson, Wendy Saks, Suzanne Boohar, Juliette Clark, Gisela Marsano, KT Trudeau, and Kim Fidrych worked diligently to repair the sail holders. Katie Rodgers and Dana Kollman proudly represented the Broad Reachers at the Salty Sister’s Holiday FWSA Interclub on December 6th. Dana won the new FWSA Rookie Award for her first interclub! The Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us at Pass-a-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. There is no such thing as “too little” experience to join the Broad Reachers. We’ll help you learn and have fun doing it! Our Saturday morning sails are usually followed by lunch at the club. Contact for more information.
The Golf Group's December outing at came early this season on November 30th. It was a full house of 36 players to end 2022. Our group boasts many recently joined players of assorted skill levels. That is what makes the scramble format comfortable for all!

Club Woman's
by Janna Ranney, PresidentOur January speaker is Tiffany Faykus , a tireless and life-long community builder and advocate. Many of you may know Tiffany through the non-profits she supports or perhaps you've seen her perform in one of our local theatre presentations, but did you know, she began her career in 1994 Moscow working with the first Toys for Tots program outside United States? Tiffany has lived in five countries and worked in more than twenty, but St. Pete remains her favorite city in the world. Her career has spanned both the corporate and nonprofit sectors.
Tiffany will talk about her work with Selah Freedom , a national nonprofit that works with local sex trafficking survivors to help them start new lives, her work with the Heart Gallery, Habitat for Humanity and how she continues to reach out globally.
Thursday, January 12th ~ - 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Guests are welcome Look for more info in our directory!
Our Holiday Party was on December 8th with dinner, drinks, dancing, Golfer of the Year awards, the Twelve Days of Christmas (with interactive singing, props and actions), Rudolph noses, and of course, that well awaited visit from our Florida Santa! -- In closing, a special message from Sue and John Arsenault as a new team takes over the helm:
We have had many wonderful years being the leaders of your Golf Group.
"Thanks for the memories!”
CRUISING FLEET
by Kevin Cross, Fleet CaptainHappy New Year! Isn’t it great when plans fall into place last minute? That’s exactly what happened when the Sarasota YC inquired about a last-minute swap for midNovember. Fourteen boats from each fleet quickly organized and took to the Intracoastal to enjoy each other’s clubs. For our Fleet, the weekend began with refreshments and a stroll through the Sarasota YC member car show. We then enjoyed a crisp but beautiful evening on the Porthole Terrace for dinner followed by a cozy nightcap by the Neptune Bar fireplace. Cruisers participated in a range of activities from Saturday Morning Market to shopping St. Armand’s Circle to relaxing by the lovely pool. Tides and weather conditions had everyone up early Sunday for the journey home. We understand the Sarasota fleet enjoyed their time is St. Pete and both fleets are looking forward to the next swap.
The Day Trippers enjoyed a fabulous November afternoon at Big Catch. The group reported great service, food and drinks, calm water and sunshine! Doesn’t get much better than that! Our eventful 2022 Cruising Fleet program wrapped up with the December Annual Awards & Holiday Party. Cruisers were recognized for participating in five or more cruises, serving as Port Directors as well as taking on Fleet Committee and Day Tripper duties. Special recognition went to Barbara & Heber Weller for leading the Day Trippers group and the Vildibill Trophy was awarded to Pam & Garry Haas for outstanding service to the Fleet. We also had a cruise-in to SPYC downtown docks where cruisers participated in the Annual Lighting of the Yachts and dock party. Next month’s article will feature winners of the best decorated boat competition sponsored by Fillingham Yacht Sales along with photos.
Our 2023 program kicks off on January 5th when SPYC member and retired marine surveyor Bill Robbins presents “Messing about in boats; what could possibly go wrong?” Signups will also open for the Commodore’s Cruise scheduled for April 14th -30th. This year we have exciting options to cruise across the Okeechobee Waterway or to Key West. Come hear all about it!
•Monthly Meeting (luncheon): Thurs., January 5th

by Angela Kowalik, PresidentThe coast of Florida, especially the west coast, is probably the best place for shelling and beachcombing. It’s a favorite past time of those strolling the beach, “combing” for those interesting things that have washed in with the tide. Sand dollars might be the favorite, but there’s also calico scallops, spiny jewelbox, junonia, tulip banded and even jingle shells and so much more. Join us for our January 16th Program with the Florida Aquarium sharing information about beachcombing on Florida beaches. Make your reservation now online (www.spyc.org) or call (727) 360-1646. We start at 11:00 am but arrive early as doors open at 10:30 for socialization and just plain fun! A special luncheon follows the LBC meeting and program.
