COMMODORE’S LOG D
ear SPYC Members, Please enjoy this summer double issue of Smooth Sailing. Take time to make reservations for the events you would like to participate in. The Club Management and Entertainment Committee have put together some great events for you over the next several months, and I recommend that you make your reservations early. Regarding upcoming events, we have big plans for the 4th of July weekend. Downtown we have a special Dance Party on Saturday, and on Monday, be sure to attend the Honor Guard Presentation at sunset on the front steps before the fireworks. The Pass-a-Grille Beach Club will also be a fun place for the 4th of July as well and will host a delicious holiday Backyard BBQ Platter. New this year, the Entertainment Committee has scheduled on the 4th Friday each month, a different special dance band in the Heritage Lounge. Each band will be there from 7:30 to 11:00 pm for your listening and dancing pleasure...so come to the Club to hear these bands! Two months ago, the Regata del Sol al Sol race was held. The event was spectacular and everyone had a great time! Check out the detailed article and colorful photos highlighted in this issue. If you have not yet, hopefully one time you will attend this historic and exciting event! Currently, we have two major projects underway in the Club. The new marina docks project has plans in permitting, where we need approvals from several entities. We are doing well, and by the next Smooth Sailing I hope to report that we are ahead of schedule and soon going out for construction bids.
The second project is the SPYC Master Plan. The formation of this plan has been in progress for almost a year. Your Board of Directors has selected and hired the architectural and planning firm Peacock & Lewis, the Master Plan Committee has been formed, and that Committee has already had several meetings with the firm. This will be a a comprehensive 10 to 15 year plan. It will give the Club a more useful design and will attract a more varied family oriented membership. Some features of the plan may start as early as 2023; Plan details will be presented during our Annual Meeting on October 11th. When you visit the PAG Beach Club by boat be sure to see the new and longer floating dock adjacent to the pool sea wall. The Board of Directors has also approved funds to replace the single dock located at our northern boundary, and we are currently soliciting bids for that project. Finally, each year we have an Annual Shutdown for our Downtown and Pass-a-Grille Beach Clubs. This is the time that we do our deep cleaning, maintenance, and repairs, and where most of our staff will take their well-earned vacations. See page 17 for shutdown dates. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Club soon! Fair winds and calm seas,
Bill Waters, Commodore
The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. JULY/AUGUST 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

General Manager’s Log

he humid summertime air is upon us and with that come the afternoon showers and storms. Regardless of weather conditions St. Petersburg is still the place to be with so much to do! Here at the Club, you have many options to enjoy the summer sun or cool a/c indoors. As of August 9th I will have been here as your General Manager for one year – wow, how time sails by when you’re having fun in the sun! The Strategic plan is complete with action plans in place to be completed by both the management team and our leadership. Here are the following areas that will be addressed over the next several months and years ahead: ■ Facilities/Master Plan, Financial/Five-year operational plan and twenty-year capital plan ■ Services and Programs, Staffing/Needs & Membership/Process ■ Governance/Practices, Communications and Technology - Internal & External We currently have two dock projects in for permitting phases – the Sailing Center and Main Docks. We feel optimistic that both will be approved, and both will better serve our membership. More to come on each of these projects soon. The Club’s Annual shutdown is right around the corner. These weeks give the staff a needed break and allow us to also tackle a few repairs and maintenance around the Club. In addition, this is the time where our Management team can reflect on all the things we have done well this past season and what we can improve upon in the near fiuture. Moving forward you will notice some significant changes with our Food and Beverage operations beginning with a new “Tiki Time” menu and an “Island Time” menu. The Tiki Time menus will be for quick orders such as pizza, Cuban sandwiches, paninis, hot dogs, and salads. The Island Time menus will feature more of your traditional dine-in menu options. Grille 1909 Menus will be changing as well, and we will include more specialty desserts.
Master Plan Update – We are working with a planning company to develop “Good – Better – Best” designs for all of our facilities. These potential plans will be presented to the Membership in October at the Annual Meeting. Final presentations on facility upgrades will be presented in 2023. What does this mean? – Where does our Club want to be in 5, 10, 15 years? Bottom line it comes down to money in most members minds. But is that the way we should really be looking at it? We are embarking on one of the biggest initiatives that the Club has faced in some time. The decisions we make over the next several months will affect the Club’s direction for years to come. Look around and see what’s happening in the Private Club World, then look and see what’s happening in and around St. Petersburg. If I were a betting man (I’m not) I would bet and predict that St. Petersburg will continue its growth and with that growth will come many more new families and a caliper of members we want and need for many years to come. The Vinoy is in construction mode, The Don Beach Side has gone through massive renovations, and new high-rises all around us as we sit here with an aging facility dying for some love and upgrades. I ask for the entire Membership be open minded as the plan develops and think about the overall impact these changes can make on the future trajectory of this fine Club. In the end you will see a "Good – Better – Best" plan with all the details, cost, and timelines so that an educated and thoughtful decision can be made. In closing, it’s been a great first year here at the Club, my family and I are grateful for the opportunity and feel very comfortable calling St. Petersburg our home! For those of you who summer up north, are traveling, or sticking it out here in St. Pete have a safe and great summer!
Cheers

t was fast, sometimes harrowing and always memorable. Then, as the race ended, the party was just getting started for the 51st Regata del Sol al Sol race from St. Petersburg to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The overall winner on corrected time was Geodesic, skippered by Andrew Tucker. The first to finish, near noon on Sunday, April 24, was Pendragon, skippered by Mike Kayusa. Twenty boats raced. The start Friday, April 22, for Race “LI” in Tampa Bay — within view of the St. Petersburg Pier — was the first since 2018 because of Covid. Favorable eastern quadrant winds at 20 knots had gusts of more than 30 knots. Swells of up to 12 feet were reported as racers crossed the Gulf of Mexico. All boats finished the 456-nautical-mile race by Tuesday morning. “Usually, boats are still finishing into Wednesday,” event chair Beth Pennington said. On the island, traditional events welcomed the sailors and guests throughout the week. The Lima family hosted participants and guests at two parties Wednesday: one for crews and guests, and another for skippers, navigators and race committee at the rarely opened historic Casa de las Rocas (House on the rocks). The basketball game that night featured women playing for each team, a first! The Islanders, as often happens, won 37-31. But the game was closer than usual, with the “Gringos” down by just 2 midgame. The cheerleaders, women and men gave it their all. A team led by Shirley Rigo won the Poker Run by collecting a four-of-a-kind hand
while visiting venues around the island between Wednesday and Thursday. Prizes were awarded at the Rum-and-Coke party Thursday at the Las Hamacas Bar. Also announced at the Rum and Coke party, Tattoo, skippered by Glenn Benson, won the inaugural Fishing Tournament and the honor of being part of the tournament name next time. A sundown reception Thursday, hosted by the Mayor of Isla Mujeres, featured the pomp of a military band, dignitaries and gift exchanges. Island leaders thanked PRO George Pennington and event chair Beth Pennington for their work on the event. The Mayor also explained to us that when she was a child, she was one of the kids that got to go out on a boat in the Regata Amigos. Five vessels played host to 50 - 60 island children for the reinstated Amigos Race on Friday. 'Shearwater', skippered by Geoffrey Conroy, won the race; 'Liquid Time', skippered by Gail Heausler, was second. The kids not only got to sail, but received candy and gifts delivered from the city of St. Petersburg. Traditional dancers also earned a standing ovation at Saturday’s awards presentation at Cabanas Maria del Mar Buhos Restaurant. For complete results for Regata del Sol al Sol, click on the regatta at yachtscoring.com or access yachtscoring.com through the spyc.org/Regattas webpage.
Trophies were awarded to class winners:

On Sunday, May 22, fifteen military veterans joined us for day on the water with the Wounded Warrior Project. Participants started with onshore training focusing on the basics of sailing, followed by two on the water training sessions in champagne sailing conditions. Sailors enjoyed the event so much that they will be retuning in the Fall for a multiday training opportunity. On June 4th, after a rainy evening, the skies finally parted just in time for our event with Landon's Legacy. Landon's Legacy is a non-profit organization that strives to provide special events for children who cannot participate in other programs such as little league, soccer, karate, etc. This year’s event was jam packed with sailing and sailing-related arts and crafts for over seventy-five participants! Our 2022 summer camps are in full swing. We are excited to have the YMCA back for three one-week camps. More than 60 YMCA participants will join us throughout the summer season. A special thank you to the SPYC Christmas Boutique, Salty Sisters, and Broad Reachers for helping to fund this amazing partnership. We are excited for a new partnership this summer…Camp Red Bird, from the City of St. Petersburg’s Therapeutic Recreation Program joined an amazing group of member volunteers and staff on the water for a taste of sailing. This minicamp, held on June 29th, allowed the group the opportunity to spend the afternoon sailing on Tampa Bay.
Thank you to all the groups who joined us over the last few weeks. We can’t wait for more adventures with groups this Fall! SMOOTH SAILING | JULY/AUGUST 2022

he Inaugural Pennington Cup was sailed on Sunday, March 27, 2022 in Tampa Bay waters. Originally scheduled to take place out of Pass-a-Grille on March 13th, storm conditions with heavy seas and winds forced a postponement and change of venue. This race, a part of the Suncoast Boat of the Year Series, has traditionally been known as the Crown Cars Regatta sailed out of Pass-a-Grille. Early in 2022 the race was retitled The Pennington Cup in honor and heartfelt recognition of our Regatta General, George Pennington and the many years that he and Beth Pennington have served as St. Petersburg Yacht Club’s outstanding race committee for both One Design and handicap rated events. The race on Sunday was perfect with steady winds in the 9-11 KN range. The Spinnaker and Racer-Cruiser divisions navigated a 22NM course around Tampa Bay and the Cruising division a 16NM course. The awards party, with a generous keg compliments of 81Bay Brewing, was held in the Regatta Room. Commodore Bill Waters welcomed the sailors and shared some of his own sailing stories and experiences. Before presenting the awards he again thanked George and Beth Pennington for their years of dedication to and leadership of the SPYC Race Committee, to our regattas and to the overall sailing community. Commodore Waters’ remarks were met with a standing ovation from the sailors in tribute to George and Beth! The Pennington Cup perpetual trophy is a “work in progress” and will be ready for the 2023 running of The Pennington Cup. Pictured are Commodore Bill Waters with George and Beth Pennington presenting the Racer-Cruiser Division 1st place award certificate to the winning crew of Island Time.
Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service by a Professional: Allison Jolly, Head Coach for the University of South Florida. Allison states, “As I reflect on all of the coaches, past and present, who have been mentors and role models, I am both humbled and honored to receive this award. While I only knew Graham Hall during a brief stint trying out for the America3 team, I was impressed by his demeanor; focused, intense, but somehow at the same time “chill”. Just being nominated for the Graham Hall Outstanding Service by a Professional award is a milestone, but to be named a recipient is a tribute to those who have welcomed me to the coaching profession and who have shown me through words and actions how to be a credit to my student-athletes and to college sailing. Thank you all very much!”

RIDERS
CLUB D
by Bob Frazee, President
Scenic route included long horn cattle and many fields of Blue Bonnet wild flowers
uring the last 2 weeks of April, members of the SPYC Riders Club, along with several former members and other riders, completed a motorcycle tour of the Texas “Hill Country” - the lands west of Austin & San Antonio. The trip coincided with the peak blooms of spring wildflowers throughout the area. The 3-day trip out to Texas and back covered over 1,200 miles each way, and 6 local rides totaling 1,000 miles of road throughout the Hill Country. These roads are considered some of the best in the U.S. for experienced motorcycle riders, as they wind thru the hills, valleys, creeks with low water crossings, old cattle trails and modern ranches, and around the rivers, lakes and reservoirs throughout. We came to ride the “Willow Loop”, “Devils Backbone”, “Cypress Creek”, and TX-335, 336 and 337- notoriously known as the “3 Twisted Sisters”. These roads, with hundreds of twists, turns and climbs, are described by bikers as some of the most challenging roads, and provide the most beautiful vistas Texas has to offer.

We stayed in local BnBs in Fredericksburg, TX, the largest of the historic German settlements dating to the early 1800’s, and enjoyed the best of local food - BBQ, Tex-Mex, and German specialties. In the evenings we enjoyed live country music at local “honky-tonks”, as well as local wines and beers. The entire trip was great! For those fans of the “Lonesome Dove” novels set in this area of Texas, the camaraderie of our “Posse” was again captured by the Hat Creek Cattle Company’s motto: “Uva Uvam Vivendo Varia Fit” - We are influenced by the company we keep; we grow through the depth of relationships we have with others.

Boat Tour - Kowalik's & Merriman's
n April, several of our RVers had the opportunity to participate in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC) Adventure Weekend at Fernandina Beach along with a few from our Cruising Fleet. It certainly was a land, sea, and road trip with people coming by car, boat, and RV, from many of our FCYC clubs. There was opportunity to “mingle” with the group of 80+ FCYC members at the Hampton Inn each afternoon for a Meet & Greet. We were probably some of the first FCYC members to visit the new Oyster Bay Yacht Club, the newest member of the FCYC, and having dinner there. There was a delightful boat tour one afternoon, taking us around Amelia Island and learning about the area. We had private trolleys for a tour of the city the next morning which gave us some of the history of the historic and quaint town of Fernandina Beach. Back at the RV camp, Pecan Park RV Resort, we were able to chill, relax, and talk about our daily adventures. The Mednick’s treated us to chocolate & peanut butter Martinis, while Rick Moseley let us experience some “virtual reality”. It was a great weekend! SPYC was well represented at this fun weekend. Those attending from our RV Land Cruisers group: • Brian & Angela Kowalik • Barbara & Howie Mednick • Bob & Andrea Merriman • Rick & Sarah Moseley • Ken & Corrine St. Jean Those attending from the Cruising Fleet: • Commodore Bill & Mary Waters • Kevin & Susan Cross • Chris & Ben Roddey

am pleased to announce the awarding of the Nancy Vildibill Trophy to Willy Bain. Commodore Bill Waters was on hand to deliver the trophy which recognizes Willy’s commitment to the success of the Cruising Fleet during his two years as Fleet Captain – thank you Willy! In May, the Fleet cruised to Marina Jack’s in Sarasota with the weekend organized by Port Directors Larry & Kathy Church. Although the weather deterred some from making the trip, those who did enjoyed dinner at Marina Jack’s Restaurant, the Sarasota Saturday morning market and docktails aboard Paul & Julie Murray’s boat 'Out of the Blue'. The May Day Trippers event to SPYC Pass-a-Grille was so much fun that lunch nearly turned into dinner! Our June Fleet luncheon featured the Director of Operations for TowBoatUS Tampa Bay, Captain James Freeman, who shared towing and salvage stories from our local waters. As active boaters, we are all very thankful to have TowBoatUS at the ready. During our luncheon, Susan Cross shared the results of our annual member survey which will help shape our 2023 calendar. Over 30 members completed the survey indicating keen interest in Fleet activities and outstanding volunteer support for 2023. June’s cruise was a 3-night swap with the Clearwater Yacht Club Cruising Fleet. The swap freed-up space at Clearwater making room for 11 boats. Port Directors Steve & Debbie Clapp organized a fun-filled weekend with docktails at the CYC Tiki Bar, dinners at CYC, Crabby’s Dockside, Shor American, Cesare’s, and a serious mini-golf competition. The Fleet also helped Tim Connolly celebrate a special birthday. Next up is our July 4th holiday weekend SPYC cruise-in and August 19th21st cruise to Tampa Yacht & Country Club. Stop by the SPYC docks during the holiday weekend to see decorated vessels and signup online, or via Ctering, to join us for dinner on July 2nd and September 1st. Safe cruising!

he Woman's Club is being infused with a new vibrancy! Summer Dine-Arounds are back with a fantastic line-up of restaurants. Last month, we filled Urban Stillhouse with a fun group of members for a delicious dinner, great conversation and lots of laughs. We'll be at Two Graces on Thursday, July 14th at 6:00 pm and Taverne Costale on Thursday, August 11th at 6:00 pm. Email Janna at, jannrann@gmail.com, to make your reservations. Our final Program Meeting of the year was over the top informative and interesting with guest speaker, Jose Martinez, current President of the Downtown Business Association. Personable, well-spoken, dapper, and clearly on top of what's happening with St. Pete's local businesses. Jose stayed long after his presentation ended to answer questions and converse individually with WC members. He also owns Sartorial Inc., a classic yet trendy men’s boutique on Beach Drive. In keeping with your requests for more local speakers, such as Tracy Webley and Jose Martinez, next season, we'll be following up with programs on our city budget, economic growth, changing demographics, and other pertinent city issues - plus, all the usual fun stuff! We're also changing our meeting day to the second Thursday of the month. This not only eliminates any conflicts with the Salties, but also having to move meetings forward to accommodate the holidays and other conflicts. We'll meet some months for lunch and some months for dinner, so no matter your schedule, you'll be able to join us! Our full schedule will be published in our 2022-2023 directory and monthly in Smooth Sailing - plus we'll send out our usual emails.

It was Ladies Day!
by Connie Smith
I
n May we traveled to Bradenton to the scenic river view course, Waterlefe. For the first time we started out the day with eight woman golfers! The natural plan was to let the ladies play in their own division, in two foursomes, with only one team winning the First Place prize. Well, the ladies proved to have the most fun of the day, tied their scores, but had to split their winnings. Congrats to Bekah Rush, Susan Arsenault, Karen Liberman, Kimberlie Rogers Bowers, Susan Cooper, Isabel Schoenberg, Connie Smith, and Nydia Ballesteros who were all First Place Champions! As for our Guys: Tom Ritschel, Mike McDonough, and Mike Weinstock won the day with a -3. John Arsenault, John Rogers, and Charles Kard had a bad encounter with Hole # 15 but was able to squeak out a Second Place finish with a -1. Coming in a close Third Place was David Bowers, John Ovink, and Bill Protz. Closest to the Pin Winners were David Bowers and Tom Ritschel.

We hope that this will entice you to join our “Club within a Club”. he Broad Reachers ended the sailing season with a beautiful morning “hunting” for puffs. It was a small group of three sailors, but it was nice to be on the water. Katie Rodgers thanked Juliette Clark and KT Trudeau for handling the “heavy lifting.” Unfortunately, after waiting around for lunch, the girls discovered that the Club was closed due to a private party.
Summer camp has begun at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center so all the Prams, equipment, and sails have been moved downtown to be used by the kids. This will be a great time to do some “summer” cleaning of the trailer and reorganize. Some other activities for the Broad Reachers this summer will include kayaking, paddle boarding, pool & beach activities, and of course, lunch at PAG. Upcoming Events: ■ Welcome Back Party ■ Commodore Lucas Cup ■ Captain’s Race (TBA) ■ Sail to Shell Island for our annual picnic ■ And of course our big adventure...sailing to the Hotel Zamora for lunch!! We also look forward to all the FWSA events starting up in October. Come join on Saturday mornings for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at, Carol@dband1.com.

At lunch, on May 25th, Co-Captain Dee Gill commented that “We did go out with a bang today” to end the sailing season. They had lots of wind and waves! There were 33 Salties on the water for the last sailing of the season. Dee said... “it was so much better than standing on the dock and doing the other stuff that we’ve been doing for the last six weeks…..not much.”
Helle Getz
Congratulations to Helle Getz! On May 7th, Helle received The Island Goats Sailing Society’s Freshwater Award to recognize her meritorious contributions to offshore sailing. The Society, established in 1959 within the Chicago Yacht Club, whose members must have sailed in at least 25 Chicago Mackinac Island races. Several of the Salty Sisters have been travelling abroad in May & June - Audrey Orgo explored Athens Greece; Kathy Ahern traveled to Italy; Jean Hurst had a blast vacationing in Machupicchu, Peru; Carol Hansen cruised to Europe and the Greek Islands before doing a “land cruise” for 13 days from Rome to London. There will be many exciting stories to tell from these gals when we all get together!

September 1st) On the shooting side there’s not enough space here to cover the shooting skills Les exhibits with his German made Blaser F3. You need to find Les in the bar and pull up a good chair. While you’re talking about shooting ask him this, ”How does a freshman who never played tennis before college become the team’s captain in 3 years?”
by Rich Treinen
C
ollege is a great place to learn new skills. For Les Bauer, from West Orange NJ, that was tennis. In his freshman year at Curry in Milton MA, Les learned the tennis team was looking for players, so he joined. His skills advanced rapidly and he ended up playing the 5 spot in his first of four years on the team. His major was biology. After Curry, Les got another degree in Medical technology at Princeton Hospital and then jumped to a position at Scientific Products in Pittsburgh. His next move came when his father purchased an orthotics equipment company in Tampa. That brought Les to Florida to help run the company. He was instrumental in an expansion of the company to include prosthetics. The business was successful, Les retired and his son now runs Westcoast Brace & Limb.
