NCOMMODORE’S LOG CHAPTER EIGHT
ow that summer is in full swing please take advantage of a cold drink by one of our swimming pools with friends or family (or both!). Please join us for a very special 4th of July celebration. The Clubhouse opens at 4:00 pm with the party starting at 5:00 pm. Along with a fabulous dinner buffet that evening, the Coast Guard Color Guard will present a special flag lowering ceremony at sunset. Stay for the City fireworks show over the waterfront. Reservations are required so don’t delay in reserving your spot.
I want to remind everyone of the summer shutdowns at the downtown and PAG clubhouses. The Downtown Club will be closed from July 22 - August 5th, and Pass-a-Grille will be closed from August 6th - August 21st. No major projects are included during shutdown this year aside from completing the repurposing of the Commodore and Parkview Rooms. Other projects include extensive deep cleaning, reorganizing and some painting. You also might want to take advantage of the Magical History Tours that are now up and running. We have several members who have been trained as docents and are anxious to share their knowledge and club history with you. You can register online at www.spyc.org: click on the online Calendar to find upcoming dates and online registration links. I also wanted to point out that the Club’s Mission Statement has now been posted in our lobby at the Downtown Clubhouse.
I was honored to be a part of the festivities of the Regata del Sol al Sol race to Mexico. I delivered a Proclamation from our Mayor Welch to our sister city Isla Mujeres Mayor at a special City Council Meeting.
The Council had proclaimed it Regata del Sol al Sol Day and were very gracious and welcoming to all the sailors and members of our Club present. I want to thank Race Chairman Paul Goodman and his wife Barbara for executing an incredible race event.
Finally, an update on several fronts; the main dock project continues to move along nicely. I took the opportunity along with our Port Committee Chair, Past Commodore Harvey Ford, to walk the docks for the first time recently. It is an incredible sight to see this come together and I can tell you it will be worth the wait when this project is finished in the fall. The DPM team will continue to provide bi-weekly updates on the project. Please pray for a quiet hurricane season!
The BROC continues to meet bi-monthly and has now started to interview local architects to help with design of the project as we work towards having some basic concepts to present both to the City and our membership.
Lastly, the GM Search Committee continues on its mission to hire a new General Manager. At its recommendation, the Board voted unanimously at its May meeting to contract with a professional search firm that deals exclusively in the private club space. The firm has an impressive resume and a proven process developed over the past 27 years in business. The process, which includes Board and Senior management involvement, is well underway, I do hope to be interviewing top candidates by August. Have a safe summer and please take every opportunity to enjoy your Club and your fellow members along the way……..
Cordially,
Scott Boyle, Commodore

Recap of the 2024 Regata del Sol al Sol
New friends and great memories were made, howling winds and towering seas were endured, repairs were cobbled together, bumps and bruises healed, records were set, and a good time was had by all at the 52nd running of the Regata del Sol al Sol from St. Petersburg to the Club de Yates de Isla Mujeres, Mexico April 26 – May 3, 2024.
On April 25th, after nearly a year of planning, the hardy skippers and crew attended the registration process organized by Event Chairman Paul Goodman and Co-Chair KT Trudeau . The eighteen competitors represented the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, Davis Island Yacht Club, Punta Gorda Sailing Club, Tampa Sailing Squadron, Little Harbor Marina , and the Club de Yates Yucatan
With paperwork done, a series of seminars were available for skippers and crew to prepare for the Gulf conditions. The crews were hosted and toasted at a festive SPYC street party that Thursday evening.
The sailors were joined for the festivities by numerous well-wishers including Commodore Scott Boyle, Mayor Ken Welch with representatives of the City of St. Petersburg, and Mexican Consul Juan Sabines who together honored and renewed the important Sister City relationship between St. Pete and Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
The industrious Race Committee began their (non-sailing) journeys to Mexico the next morning (Saturday, April 27th), and upon arrival, worked feverishly with the ever-gracious hosts Enrique Lima and family to be ready for the arriving fleet. News came even before the RC’s flights arrived of a boat that had suffered insurmountable rudder damage and had turned back toward Florida. How did that rudder go missing? The RC followed the returning boat using the YB Tracking app and soon saw the boat to be safely at anchor in the Manatee River. The tracker ultimately showed the crew safe and sound at the SPYC bar. Determined to not miss the island festivities, the skipper and crew had flights booked and headed to Isla for the fun.
First to Finish honors went to 'Wasabi' and Skipper, Eric Lopez del Valle, who endured 25-30 kt winds and 10-12 ft seas for nearly two full days. 'Wasabi' and crew jubilantly arrived at the Lima Docks on Sunday night, April
28th, completing the journey in an elapsed time of 2 days, 10 hours, 22 minutes. Two regatta records would be eclipsed; Racer/Cruiser 'Freedom of Hamble', Skippered by Ward Passmore, beat that Class’ elapsed time record set in 2008 by 10 minutes (2 days, 12 hours, 14 minutes) and Multihull 'Babylon', Skippered by Mark Chadason, was Overall Winner and beat the corrected time record set in 2009 by nearly 4 hours (1 day, 15 hours, 00 minutes).
Over the next 38 hours, all competitors and support boat, 'Rippel on the Water', arrived safely, but battered in Isla Mujeres. Blown out sails, malfunctioning autopilots, frayed backstays, leaky portlights and wet below-decks were the story of the rough passage. The Race Committee warmly welcomed each boat, explaining Mexican customs and clearance procedures. The Lima’s amazing dockhands safely secured the arriving boat before presenting each with a generous bag of ice and beer for immediate consumption, regardless of time of day.
With all boats and crews in Mexico, the fun could begin! Enrique Lima, his son, lovely daughters, and granddaughters invited the visiting dignitaries, Race Committee, skippers and navigators to the original family home, Casa de las Rocas, for a welcome cocktail party on Wednesday afternoon, May 1st. Joining the group was the Mexican Navy Admiral, the Isla Mujeres Port Captain, the Sanitation Department Head, and acting Mayor, Señora Alejandra Peniche. Gifts and stories were exchanged and the rich history of the home and the amazing family was shared and enjoyed by all.
The long-standing basketball rivalry between visiting Team Gringos (sailors and friends) and Team Amigos (local, talented players) continued on Wednesday evening, May 1st, with a close, competitive game of high spirit and great sportsmanship. Team Amigos’ series winning record, built over many decades, was challenged by the scrappy, hungry Gringos team led by Coach Hank Brautigam. In the end the local team’s victory streak was intact when the Gringos fell 3 points short.
The hearty support by fellow sailors, fans, and the amazing Team Gringos cheerleaders (including KT Trudeau, Alicia Thornton, and Gina BowdenPierce from the Race Committee, Salty Sisters Taryn Bergstrom and Judy McFadden as play-by-play announcer and 'XTC' crewmember, Jeannie O’Grady) was unmatched and mostly undaunted by the loss. There’s always the chance for a win during the rematch coming up in 2026.
Isla Mujeres’ acting mayor, Señora Peniche, fresh off her team’s basketball win, graciously and solemnly welcomed the Race Committee, Commodore and Mrs. Boyle, and all sailing crews in a lovely formal reception on Thursday, May 2nd at the Palacio Municipal de Isla Mujeres. Each skipper and honored guest was designated Huésped Distinguido (Distinguished Guest) for the week of the Race. In exchange, Commodore Boyle and Event Chairman Paul Goodman presented the Mayor with a Proclamation from the City of St. Petersburg and a plaque recognizing the Sister City relationship between St. Pete and the island.
The Golf Cart Poker Run was a fun event for the 28 teams participating. The teams were composed of Regata del Sol al Sol sailors and supporters. They navigated the island in search of 10 designated local businesses to pick up a playing card and enjoy the local hospitality. The more locations visited the greater the chances of assembling the best poker hand. Most teams visited all 10 locations. Prizes were awarded for the top 3 poker hands during the Blue Ballyhoo Rum Party.
The 2nd Annual “Tattoo” Fishing Tournament, traditionally named for the prior tournament winner, had 8 entries during the run to Isla Mujeres. Per RC members Ron Kinney and Holanda Manzano’s rules, photos and measurements of fish caught during the journey were submitted once each boat arrived in Isla.
The top three winners each caught at least one bonito and one dolphin. However, newcomer, 'Xcatic' from the Club de Yates Yucatan, won 1st Place with a total length caught of 128.5” comprised of 2 barracudas, 1 bonito, and 1 dolphin. They also won naming rights for the next Regata del Sol al Sol in 2026 when interested skippers will enter the “XCATIC” Fishing Tournament.

MEMBER Spotlight
Salty Sister, Els Wiemken, is sailing from the coast of Ecuador to the Galapagos on a Dutch historic three masted Schooner from 1917. She is on a 2-year journey around the world to follow in Darwin’s footsteps. Two years ago she signed-up for this segment of the voyage. The wind was westerly and they started out motoring but the wind turned southerly, temperature dropped, the sails were hoisted; quite a job as you can imagine and now they are on a beam reach at a steady 9 knots. She is with 18 passengers, 2 photographers & drone operators and a crew of eight. You can read about the voyage at www.darwin200.com
Kent & Michele Dudley left St. Pete on January 1, 2023 traveling on their 42 foot sailboat (1994 Valiant 42) to sail on a journey of a lifetime. Their stops included: Panama Canal, Galapagos, Marquesas, Tuamotus, Society Islands, Samoa, Fiji, and New Zealand. They have had a fantastic adventure and had replaced their diesel engine with a new Yanmar Engine in the Bay of Islands NZ. As they were having the engine installed, they bought a used Toyota Camper Van and drove nearly 3,000 miles exploring the North and South Island of New Zealand
At the Westhaven Marina they ran across a trophy, many of you may recognize, that is housed at the RNZYS - Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron . The one and only America’s Cup
to Jeff Farmer and Past Commodore Brian Smith for winning the FCYC Pickleball title on May 27th in men’s doubles!
Game was played at Bradenton Yacht Club. The team defeated the East Coast Champion team from Halifax River Yacht Club in a come from behind victory by the score of 10-12, 11-3, 11-3. This was a delayed final match for the 2023 Championship. Congratulations!

As Commander, U.S. Central Command, General McKenzie oversaw some of the most important – and controversial – operations in modern U.S. military history. The Melting Point is a first-person perspective on his time in command. Woven throughout the stark, compelling narrative are three themes. The first is the importance of civilian control of the military. The second is the uniqueness of being a combatant commander, existing at the nexus of policy, strategy, and, ultimately, operations. The third theme is the importance of leaders and the decisions that they make. This book offers a vivid portrait of leadership in action in one of the most volatile regions of the world.
General (Ret) Kenneth F. “Frank” McKenzie, Jr. became the Executive Director of the University of South Florida’s Global and National Security Institute in May 2022. In July 2022, he also became the Executive Director of the Florida Center for Cybersecurity, also known as Cyber Florida.
He is the former Commander, United States Central Command. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, upon graduation from The Citadel in 1979, General McKenzie was commissioned into the Marine Corps and trained as an infantry officer. He has commanded at the platoon, company, battalion, Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and component levels. As a Lieutenant Colonel, he commanded First Battalion, Sixth Marines. As the Commanding Officer of the 22d MEU (SOC), he led the MEU on combat deployments to Afghanistan in 2004 and Iraq in 2005-06. In 2006-07 he served as the Military Secretary to the 33rd and 34th Commandants of the Marine Corps. Upon promotion to Brigadier General in July 2007, he served on the Joint Staff as a Deputy Director of Operations within the National Military Command Center. June 2008, he was selected by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to be the Director of the Chairman’s New Administration Transition Team (CNATT). In this capacity, he coordinated the efforts of the Joint Staff and the combatant commands in preparing for and executing a wartime transition of administrations.
June 2009, he reported to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul, Afghanistan, to serve as the Deputy to the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) for Stability. Upon his return from Afghanistan, in July 2010, he was assigned as the Director, Strategy, Plans, and Policy (J-5) for the U.S. Central Command. In August 2012, he reported to Headquarters Marine Corps to serve as the Marine Corps Representative to the Quadrennial Defense Review. June 2014, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and assumed command of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Central Command. In October 2015, he was assigned to the Joint Staff to serve as the Director, J-5, Strategic Plans and Policy, Joint Staff, and in July 2017, he was named the Director, Joint Staff. General McKenzie was promoted to the grade of General and assumed command of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in March 2019. He relinquished command of CENTCOM and retired from the Marine Corps on April 1, 2022, completing over 42 years of service.
General McKenzie is an honors graduate of the Armor Officer Advanced Course, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the School of Advanced Warfighting. He was selected as a CMC Fellow in 1999, and served as a Senior Military Fellow within the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. He has a master’s degree in teaching with a concentration in history. He is currently the President of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Applied Engineering at the University of South Florida, a Distinguished Senior Fellow on National Security at the Middle East Institute, a Member of the International Advisory Committee of the National Council on U.S. Arab relations, and a Member of the National Security Advisory Council, U.S. Global Leadership Coalition.

The 51st running of the Regata Amigos was held on Friday morning, May 3rd. This traditional fun sail allows the island’s school children a bit of adventure as passengers on lovely sailing vessels. 'Wasabi', 'Blue Heron', and 'Liquid Time' participated from the fleet along with 2 other visiting sailboats. 'Wasabi' took line honors in the short race, but the kids’ smiles and stories lasted for hours.
The amazing week concluded with a dinner and trophy presentation on Friday evening, May 3rd. A jubilant mood infused the crowd at Buho’s Bar as each crew celebrated another successful and fun week in Isla Mujeres. With the invaluable packing done by Leah, in Member Services, and the “transport service” provided by Todd and Christina Rippel and their vessel, 'Rippel on the Water', the vast perpetual trophy collection from SPYC was arrayed for presentation. 'Babylon' was the Overall Winner on a corrected time of 1 day, 15 hours. 'XTC' won the Cruising Class in 1 day, 17 hours, 58 minutes. 'Liquid Time' won the Racer/Cruiser class in 2 days, 0 hours, 55 minutes. Two special presentations brought all present to their feet in rousing appreciation.
First, the Lita Trophy for "Most Participation" was proudly presented to Tom Glew of 'XTC' for his 22 visits to Isla Mujeres in this and other similar races to Mexico. Tom represents all that sailing and this race are about: teach people to love sailing, learn the Gulf and its vagaries, enjoy family, friends and crew along the way, and have a great time in Mexico.
Next, the License Jose de Jesus Lima Trophy for "Friendship" was awarded to long-time celebrities of the race…outgoing Event Chairman, Beth Pennington and outgoing PRO, George Pennington. Their stewardship of the race, wonderful friendship with the Lima family over the decades, and watchfulness to make each race a success is a worthy, notable legacy they leave as they step back from these important duties. At the last, the 52nd running of the Regata del Sol al Sol was complete!
A note from Event Chairman, Paul Goodman:
“My sincere thanks go out to the SPYC Race Committee, the SPYC Flag, and the amazing employees of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. With their help and guidance this regatta is, and will continue to be, a special event on the SPYC Ocean Racing calendar. Continued thanks go to the Lima family and all in Isla Mujeres who welcomed and celebrated us and I eagerly look forward to our return in 2026. Start making your plans soon!”

The 2024 Commodore’s Cruise was a first for two reasons – the first year that we’ve scheduled two Commodore’s Cruises, one in April and one in May, and the first time in a long time that weather caused us to cancel a destination! The first Commodore’s Cruise departed April 5th for the Keys, with three ports scheduled along the way – Venice, Captiva, and Naples. The west coast of Florida continued to experience high winds and rough seas during April, which made for some sporty cruises between ports. Once in Naples, the group diligently watched the wind and sea forecasts in anticipation of the long open crossing to Key West. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate; with a forecast of 25 knot winds and 3-5 foot seas, the group collectively decided to stay in Naples 2 extra nights, forego the Key West leg, and head straight to Marathon one day early. That turned out to be the right decision, as we received reports of up to 7-foot seas in the Gulf the day we were originally scheduled to depart. The ride to Marathon was still sporty and slow-going, but once the group arrived at Faro Blanco the cocktails flowed, the stress quickly subsided, and we enjoyed a wonderful 4 days in Marathon. On April 18th, some cruisers headed home, making stops along the way at their own pace, and several stayed on in Marathon, waiting for a weather window for the crossing to the Bahamas. Those of us who had to get home have been jealous of the amazing photos and stories the Bahamas group has shared, including whale sightings crossing the Gulf Stream!
On May 17th, our second Commodore’s Cruise departed for Sarasota, Useppa, and Pink Shell. They enjoyed calmer winds and seas than the April group, but they traded wind for heat, experiencing some steamy weather for May. Highlights of this cruise included dining, shopping and pool time in Sarasota; dinghy rides to Bird Key Yacht Club for lunch; dinner at the Collier Inn on Useppa and a ride to Cabbage Key for lunch and Cabbage Crawls; plus beach activities and dinner at Yucatan at Pink Shell in Fort Meyers.
Many thanks to Port Directors for both cruises: Camille Lurillo & Joe Petrella, Laura & Keith Gibson, Kelly Lee & Jay Rice, Chris & Ben Roddy, and Susan & Kevin Cross, Al Torres & Jennifer Kirk, Frank & Jackie Robinson, and Steve Shortt. Our cruises are so much fun because of all the planning our Port Directors do to keep us active, fed, and entertained!
While we take a break from regular meetings over the summer, our monthly cruises continue, and we’ll gather at Pass-a-Grille for a Mid-Summer Party on July 25th. Check out our calendar posted on the Cruising Fleet webpage.
[UPCOMING Cruising Fleet Events:

May was an active and productive month for Salty Sisters. Wednesday morning sailing included Pram Participation Series, won by PC Barbara Watson (1st), Lisa Avila (2nd) and Katie Rodgers (3rd), as well as crewed boat practice in Sonars, Ideal 18s and 420’s.
Congratulations to PC Jennifer Parramore, who became the newest Skipper’s Hat, an honor bestowed on members with proven competence in training sailors in all the crewed boats! As well, Jennifer O’Neill successfully
completed the Level 1 US Sailing Instructor Course at Daytona Beach. Salty Sisters were well represented at the annual meeting of FWSA (Florida Women’s Sailing Association) on May 16th, hosted by Rhumb Runners at the Boca Ciega Yacht and Country Club. SPYC’s Dorothy Mendelblatt, nominated by our club, received the FWSA Young Woman Sailor of the Year award. PC Carol Hansen won the Lilly Kaighin award, FWSA’s highest honor!
The 2024-2025 FWSA officer slate includes Salty Sisters Jennifer Anderson - President, PC Carol Hansen - Treasurer, and PC Connie Beckman - Parliamentarian. In addition, Marti Cochran will chair Education Committee, Jennifer O’Neill is our first delegate and Emily Kennedy becomes second delegate.
A new perpetual trophy was created to recognize Salty Sisters’ nominated recipients of the FWSA Young Woman Sailor of the Year Award. Winners Dorothy Mendelblatt (2024), Bella Shakespeare (2020), JJ Smith (2017), and Blaire McCarthy (2016) were recognized at our lunch on May 29th.
We also repurposed 2 retired trophies to support female junior sailing. The Allison Jolly Trophy, to be awarded annually at the Junior Sailing Awards to the “Top Opti Female who demonstrates high achieving results and is a mentor to other female sailors” went to Leah Abrams. The Jeanine Green Trophy will be awarded to the “Top Greenie” - Green Fleet girl who shows the most potential and has been in the Green Fleet for less than 2 years.
As sailing activities wound down for summer, some Salty Sisters enjoyed a day aboard Gail and Tom Poffenberger’s beautiful catamaran, "Compass Rose", organized by Cruise Chair, KT Trudeau. Shelly Watkins, Social Chair, also planned a "Red, White & Blue" 4th of July themed party on July 3rd and a pool party on the tiki deck on July 17th.
The FWSA Championship Regatta will be hosted by Salty Sisters at St. Petersburg Sailing Center on November 7th with expected participation by all 11 FWSA Member Clubs in Ideal 18s and Sonars.

The Broads had two final sailing days before our prams went to the Sailing Center for the summer. On May 11th, we were lucky to have our PRO Gloria Davis on hand to whistle some starts. We opted to try something different by match racing around the buoys. It wasn’t America’s Cup by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fun!
On May 18th, we attempted to have our traditional final sail of the season to the Hotel Zamora for lunch. Reservations were made, and we had a lovely and speedy downwind sail to the hotel. When we arrived, we were informed that the docking fee was $35.00 per boat!
With 8 prams and a safety boat, this seemed excessive, as well as unfair, as the fees were not disclosed to us when we made the reservations. So we turned around and had a lovely lunch at PAG! The wind was “on the nose” the whole way back, and one sailor logged more than 50 tacks on her GPS for the return trip. The Broads resume sailing after Labor Day. We invite other SPYC women to join us. No experience necessary!
Applications are available at the Downtown Clubhouse. Membership in the Salty Sisters is open to women members of the SPYC who have sailing experience and eager to participate in sailing, race committee and other exciting water related activities.

Fun travel trip, not just for RVers….Did you know you could get a Passport for Your National Parks? It’s one of those bucket list items and a great way to see and experience some of our beautiful nation and America’s natural treasures. Oh, and it’s fun for kids too! We “graduated” from the small book to a larger version (Collector’s Edition). Along with this passport, those of a “certain age” can get an America the Beautiful Senior Lifetime Pass…and get Core of Engineer (COE) campgrounds at half price and entrance to National Parks for FREE!!! Similarly, in Florida, those of a “certain age” can get half price at Florida State Parks. Saving money on campgrounds lets you spend more on fuel, and other fun things!
[And so it goes…once, twice, and three times! It’s Alaska 3.0 for the Kowalik’s this summer as we head back to the Land of the Midnight Sun! We hope to be adding to our collection of Alaska National Park cancellation stamps…to go along with some of our favorites.
As a result of our travels and being gone for several months, Rick & Sarah Moseley have agreed to assume the Wagon Master role for our group. Watch for future communications and articles from them. We’ve had quite a few new members join our group and we’re hoping to get a summer meet-up for those still in town. Rick and Sarah will be in touch about that meet-up. Meanwhile, our next meeting will be in September. More details to come and hope you will plan to join us!

by Nancy Dunn, President & Robin Biloski, Program Chair
The Woman's Club new President Nancy Dunn is pleased to announce our first Program speaker for the 2024-2025 season. On September 12th it is our privilege to have Sheriff Bob Gualtieri of Pinellas County speak at SPYC. He will tell us how he has kept Florida's most densely populated county a safe place to live, all while employing 2,800 people, managing our county jail, and overseeing a $414 million budget.
He was named Sheriff of the Year in 2019, among 3,100 sheriffs throughout America.
. In 2022 he was awarded Sheriff of the Year through Major Sheriffs of America, competing with 110 entrants from some of the largest sheriff's offices in the US.
. He will speak to us first hand how he accomplishes what he does and the logistics of the office he leads.
. Questions following his presentation will be allowed as time permits.
. Sheriff Gualtieri was elected in 2011 and has been re-elected three times. . Pinellas County has experienced a continual decrease in crime since his election.
Program Chair, Robin Biloski, is so pleased he accepted our Woman's Club invitation to come and speak on the innovations and techniques used to create good practices of law and order. Robin says, "We hope to have a great turnout for this special event our Woman's Club is sponsoring. His conversations will relate to all of us and that is why we are extending this invitation to all our members and guests."
Bob Gualtieri has been the Pinellas County Sheriff since 2011, having been elected and re-elected three times. During Sheriff Gualtieri’s years as sheriff, Pinellas County has experienced a continual decrease in crime making the county one of the safest large counties in Florida and America.
During his tenure, the Sheriff has launched many innovative public safety programs including jail diversion programs that keep people who commit low-level crimes out of the criminal justice system, the county’s first law enforcement mental health unit that also helps keep people out of the jail, and a first-of-its kind Threat Management Division. Following the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSDHS) in February of 2018, then-Governor Rick Scott appointed Sheriff Gualtieri to serve as the chair of the MSDHS Public Safety Commission. This month’s Wing Shooter earned his tag, Longbeard, after bagging a big turkey on a hunt up in Kentucky. John Arsenault is well known around SPYC. He’s also active in the Golf Group, Riders Club, Saltwater Anglers and Flying Club. Here’s a plane story most people haven’t heard.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Frank Robinson at fhr506@gmail.com
As a pilot who bought a home on a designated float plane lake, John wanted an ultra light plane that could land on ground or water. He found one and he took the required training at a nearby airport. With his float plane license in hand, it was time to bring his plane home. A buddy drove John to the airport, John flew back while his buddy drove back. While waiting for his buddy to arrive John flew circles around the lake. All his neighbors saw this small plane flying circles and thought there might be something wrong.
When the buddy arrived John came in to land with everybody watching. Just before splash down a gust of wind tipped up one wing. The other wing hit the water first and it was a hard spinning crash landing. While John was okay his plane was not. It sunk. His neighbors jumped into action and the local emergency teams arrived shortly, including a local TV station helicopter, to commemorate John’s first water landing. Crash, as he was tagged by his neighbors, is full of stories like this one. Just ask Crash.
