CHAPTER FIVE

COMMODORE’S LOG

Hello Friends...activity around the Club remains in high gear as we transition into Spring. I hope you were able to attend a function that we only hold every four years, Leap Year Bonus Day. A great time was had by all with this no-charge event including Karaoke and the SPYC Wheel of Deals. Make sure you get this on your calendar for 2028! Our Valentine’s Day Dinner and ever popular Dueling Pianos events were well attended in February. Upcoming events include the 19th Annual Grand Prix Garage Party on March 10th with a new twist this year featuring an exclusive VIP Party Room.

The Club will again sponsor the Green Flag Luncheon to kick-off the racing activities for the week with many Indy car drivers and local dignitaries in attendance. Other events to make note of include the Paint & Sip event at PAG on March 14th and our St. Patrick’s Day Brunch on March 17th; that rolls into some real Irish entertainment in the Heritage Lounge that evening. If you think you missed the St. Petersburg Motor Classic Car Show in February, you didn’t. Due to the weather not cooperating with our calendar it has been rescheduled for April 7th.

I want to remind our members of the many opportunities that are available with our “Clubs Within the Club”. We have 16 sanctioned special interest groups that allow our members to connect with fellow members on a personal level with shared interests and commonalities, including (but not limited to): Cruising Fleet, Golf Group, Car Club, Women’s Club, Wing Shooters and the Wine Club. (I don’t recommend mixing the last two however!) Please contact either membership@spyc. org or member.services@spyc.org for more information.

I was honored to be part of one of my favorite sailing events in February, the Valentine’s Day Regatta. We had over 260 prams from all over the country participate. If you haven’t witnessed the orchestrated logistics of launching hundreds of boats at one time, it is amazing.

Watching the faces of these young sailors both on the water and during the awards ceremonies is priceless. Many thanks to all of our volunteers and race workers for putting on another fabulous event that further cements the St. Petersburg Yacht Club as a preeminent sailing club. I heard nothing but compliments from the participants, well done!

Regatta season continues to sail along with the Pennington Cup on March 9th, Winter Lightning Series March 16th-19th, MOA Regatta on March 23rd, the Flying Dutchman World Championship March 26th-31st and the 81 Bay Cup on April 8th. Please come out and support these incredible sailing events. See you at the Club……………

Cordially,

OW – What a month we just had! February is not only the month for lovers, but it is the month for sailors as well. This past month in a threeweek period we had the ILCA (International Laser Class Association) Mid-Winters East - February 1st-4th, with 203 total boats and sailors in addition to approximately 100 volunteers/race committee members. Followed by the Valentine's Day Regatta – February 10th & 11th, with 256 boats and sailors in addition to approximately 100 volunteers/ race committee members. Concluding with the HHSWRS (Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series) with 250 boats, multiple sailors per most boats, with approximately 100+ volunteers/race committee members stretched out in three event locations with temporary dockage. Special thanks goes out to Commodore Winning and Derby Lane and Green Savoree Racing Promotions (St. Pete Grand Prix) for the use of their docks. The entire waterfront team along with our land team at the Club did an outstanding job – kudos to you all! Let’s not forget the dedicated and always willing number of volunteers that gave up their time to help in any way this past month. Everyone’s hard work truly paid off as all events were

As our season continues here in March, we must keep in mind the rules that have been put in place for the enjoyment of all members. SPYC Guest Policy states that a guest can be accompanied by a member or be issued a guest card. Below is the complete Guest Policy of the Club:

No individual who is eligible for membership shall be brought to the Club as a guest more than twice in any one month or 12 times a year.

. Guest Cards for invited guests of the Club (i.e., regatta participants) shall be secured at the Front Desk before guests may use the facilities of the Club.

. Members introducing guests and visitors in the Club will be considered responsible for their conduct while in the Clubhouse and for any debts their guests may incur.

. The privileges of guests may be withdrawn at any time by any Flag Officer or by Management.

Out-of-Town Guests (persons living outside of the radius of forty statute miles of St. Petersburg Yacht Club) may be issued a guest card for a maximum period of 10 days twice a year. Guest Cards shall not be issued to persons residing within Pinellas County.

It has been brought to my attention on multiple occasions that there are a few who may be abusing this rule and that some guests use the Club as if they are members. Another area that needs clarification is our Service Dog Guidelines and dogs at the Club in general:

. Service dogs must be registered in the administrative offices of the General Manager or Membership Director – Tuesday – Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

. Service dogs are not allowed to be at the bar counter at any time.

. Service Dogs should remain on the floor at all times.

Service dogs are not to be fed in the Club and the Club does not provide food or water for the dog.

. Guests and staff are not allowed to pet dogs.

Dogs are to be on a leash at all times on Club property and control is to be maintained.

. Service dogs, once registered, will be noted on member’s account. Pets who are not service dogs are allowed on the patio of the Heritage Lounge only, and on the patio of the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse.

In closing, March Madness is upon us and that brings many guests and family members our way. We look forward to welcoming everyone and continuing our mission of creating found memories. We have come a long way in a very short time, but we have a long journey ahead, with steadfast vision and great leadership all the work will be well worth it. I look forward to seeing everyone around one of our various facilities!

Cheers - General Manager, COO Rhett

St. Petersburg Yacht Club's

Recap of the February Regattas

SSt. Petersburg Yacht Club recently played host to three spectacular regattas in February, attracting sailors from around the United States. The International Laser Class Association Midwinters East, the Valentine’s Day Regatta, and the HHSWRS (Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series) have showcased the clubs commitment to fostering a vibrant sailing community.

1.International Laser Class Association Midwinters East - February 1st - 4th

The first regatta of the month, the International Laser Class Association Midwinters East, was run from the North Shore Park beach area. The competition was fierce across three categories: 62 sailors in the 4 (4.7), 102 in the 6 (Radial), and 39 in the 7 (Full Rig). The weather ranged from no wind to high wind and gave our Race Committee a run for their money to get off races. In total 4 races were completed in each fleet.

2.Valentine’s Day Regatta - February 10th - 11th

The energetic Opti youth sailors invaded St Petersburg for the Valentine’s Day Regatta, held on February 10-11. An impressive 256 boats graced the waters of St. Petersburg, with 179 gold sailors and 77 silver sailors battling it out. Again the weather challenged the committee but with hard work and sailors willing to stay on the water until the sun started to set, another 4 races were held in the gold and 6 in the silver fleet. The kids were smiling on and off the water as they enjoyed the sailing and the amazing BBQ the club had waiting for them at the Sailing Center upon their return to land.

3.HHSWRS - February 16th - 18th

Last in this marathon of major regattas was the HHSWRS (formally NOOD) event. 243 boats, from one person dinghies, flying catamarans, and large offshore monohulls, raced over the entirety of Tampa bay. Staging out of the North Shore park beach, the Sailing Center, and the Grand Prix docks, sailors were delighted to participate in what is the largest of the regatta series and might be the largest regatta in the country for all ages. The weather started light (seems to be a theme this year) but it continued to build and Sunday was a challenge with big wind and cold hard rain. Despite this the sailors had a great time on and off the water.

With all of these events there is no way they could be held and run at such a high level without the tireless work of both SPYC staff and SPYC member volunteers. Whether on land or on the water this team of amazing people continues to stun the world at what we can do. I challenge any club to pull off the 3 events we did over 3 weekends, and very few if any could do it and none to our level, I honestly believe. I can never say thank you enough to all who have helped.

Special Thank You! The success of these regattas would not be possible without the support of key partners and contributors. The St. Petersburg Yacht Club extends its heartfelt gratitude to Commodore Richard Winning and Derby Lane for their unwavering support with trailer storage throughout the event. Additionally, a special mention goes to Green Savoree, the organizers of the St. Pete Grand Prix, for their collaboration in assisting with dockage throughout the event.

The St. Petersburg Yacht Club continues to be a hub of sailing excellence, fostering a sense of camaraderie among sailors and enthusiasts. With these three regattas in February, the Club has once again demonstrated its commitment to the sport and the community, setting the stage for an exciting year of sailing ahead.

2024 SPYC CLUB Championship

The highly competitive SPYC Club Championship regatta was held on Jan 27th at the St. Pete Sailing Center. With a coveted personalized parking spot on the line, teams signed on to race the club’s J70s in whatever conditions Florida winter brought them.

The day started out slow with calm seas and no wind. The Race Committee rightfully brought everyone back to shore to wait for the breeze to fill in. By 1:00 pm, the teams were greeted with a beautiful 12-15 knot southerly, and racing could commence.

Top 3 Boats

2.M att Braun

3.Tim Landt

PRO Paul Goodman and his team of expert RC volunteers ran five great races in only four hours time. The competition was tight and boats finished within two minutes of each other in all races. Mike Funsch and his team of Chad Shakespeare, Nik Hartney, and John Hartney came out on top. Commodore Boyle was on hand at the Tiki Bar to congratulate all teams and hand out awards.

Thanks to SPYC for a fun afternoon of J/70 racing and PRO Paul Goodman and his team of volunteers for putting on world class racing at home.

Question: Referring to the flagstaff displayed on the East side of our building—Have you wondered why the U.S. flag is hanging below the SPYC burgee? It’s not an error—there is a protocol for this.

. Flagstaff: The yacht club flagpole consists of a yardarm and a gaff pole which mimic the aft mast of a ship. At sea, the gaff was used to raise the mizzen sail and is the aft-most point on the vessel. Since the national flag is meant to be flown from the aft most point of a ship, it was flown either from a pole on the stern or hoisted on the gaff. Some ships also attached their national flag to the leech of their mizzen sail.

The traditions of the nautical flagpole are not commonly known among the public and often generate controversy because no flag is ever meant to be flown in a position of greater honor than our national en-sign—people see the club burgee flying higher than the national ensign. What they do not know is that in the naval world, the highest point of the mast is not the place of greatest honor. The place of honor is the aft most fly, hence the national ensign is flown from the gaff.

SPYC's HistoryMagicalTour

. Making Colors’: The ceremony of hoisting the flags at 8.00 am and dousing at sunset is called “making colors”. When shorthanded, the national ensign should be hoisted first, followed by the club burgee and the officers flags if they are present at the club (on deck).

All officers’ flags are hoisted on the same starboard halyard, highest rank on top. Colors are hoisted smartly but lowered ceremoniously. Many yacht clubs salute the lowering of the colors with a cannon shot. Flags such as Race Committee flags, Gale warning flags, and special purpose flags can also be flown at a yacht club flagpole. **Interested in volunteering to be a

SALTY SISTERS

January was a busy month for the Salty Sisters. We sailed every Wednesday except January 17th, mainly practicing on Sonars. Chilly weather required special attire! On January 17th several Salty Sisters traveled to Sarasota to help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the FWSA (Florida Women’s Sailing Association) hosted this year by the Luffing Lassies at the Meadows Country Club. After a short meeting the celebration began with a story of how FWSA was started, and we are proud to say it was due to our own Ardith Rutland Melissa Rutland, Ardith’s granddaughter, was present at the event to represent her grandmother.

Over the years several Salties have been President of FWSA. (listed in order) Fran Weaver-Norhren, Ardith Rutland, Bojka Stan, Connie Ritch, Juana Glover, Fay Baynard, Helen Larsen, Nancy Vildibill, Barbara Arnold, Peggy Lonnon, Trisha Birkenstock, Joanne Simmons, Gloria Davis, Shirley Rigo and Carol Hansen. We all enjoyed a champagne toast followed by lunch and line dancing.

The annual Maggie Mug series started on January 31st, with six teams racing in Ideal 18’s. This series normally continues for three weeks. In the following weeks we had our Valentine's Day party on February 14th, followed by a morning of sailing the next day and a "land cruise" to Sunken Gardens on February 29th.

RIDERS CLUB

We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled the continents on motorcycles together. The Riders Club at SPYC welcomes you to join us. CRUISING FLEET

Charles gave a fascinating and informative presentation on the crucial role the Port plays in the local, regional, and state economy, supporting over 85,000 jobs with an annual economic impact of more than $15 Billion. At this meeting, we reviewed plans for our two-week Commodore’s Cruises in April and May. Paul and Gini Berry had samples of our 2023 Commodore’s Cruise shirts on hand and are taking orders until February 24th.

Our annual Vessel Safety Checks by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary took place on January 27th at the PAG and Snell Marinas. Fourteen boats were able to complete the Vessel Safety Checks, ensuring their readiness for a safe cruising year ahead. Many thanks to the Harbormaster Chase Hudspeth for coordinating the scheduling of boats at both marinas, and to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for their continued support and partnership.

The Cruising Fleet had three mid-week cruises to Carlouel Yacht Club last month. Tune in next month for updates and photos from our visits to this beautiful yacht club in Clearwater.

UPCOMING Cruising Fleet Events:

•Mar 7 Cruising Fleet Luncheon – speaker Jeff Beradelli, Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist, WFLA, on hurricane preparation

Mar 15-17 Cruise to Twin Dolphin and Bradenton Yacht Club

. April 5-20 Commodore’s Cruise, round trip to Tween Waters

April 5-20th Commodore’s Cruise to Key West, with a group going on to the Bahamas

Back in January our cruise to the Tampa Convention Center for a Tampa Bay Lightning game was a big hit again this year. Thirtyfour cruisers gathered for dinner and then represented the SPYC in cheering on the Bolts to victory in a nail-biting sudden death overtime! We had 30 tickets, great seats all together, and some of our cruisers even showed up on the big screen during the game!

The Day Trippers enjoyed a picture-perfect day on the water in January, with 30 cruisers gathering for lunch at Red, White & Booze in Pass-a-Grille (formerly Sea Critters). The restaurant has great dock space and was able to accommodate all who came by boat on this gorgeous day. We always appreciate amazing water views, good food, and a beverage or two with good friends!

We had a terrific turnout for our February 1st dinner. We were honored to have Commodore Boyle and Terri join us, and they hosted special guest Captain Mike Kahle, Sector Commander, U.S. Coast Guard . Our speaker was Charles Klug, Principal Council Port Tampa Bay .

BROAD REACHERS

The “Broads” have been contending with un-Florida-like weather so far this year. After a wet start back in January, we took advantage of the dryer, but cool, weather to work on our gear over two weekends. As a result, all of our rigs have been retied and numbered, and some of our equipment was sent to the Sailing Center for repairs that were beyond our capabilities.

With everything in better shape, we kicked off 2024 sailing with our first Rabbit Race. Unfortunately, we had to contend with dying breezes and marks that drifted. But we had fun, and as we all know, a day on the water is always better than a day at the office!

January also featured FWSA events. Our Delegate, Katie Rodgers, turned in our report and represented the Broad Reachers at the FWSA meeting in Sarasota. The following week, FWSA hosted an educational symposium, attended by Suzanne Boohar, Joanne Simmons, and Juliette Clark. In February, the Broads hosted our FWSA Interclub at PAG, which featured up to 14 sailors in our prams from clubs across the state.

RV LAND CRUISERS NEWS

Members of our group keep rolling, visiting some iconic places in Florida and beyond, such as… Last October, John Lenhart & Yvonne La Fleur visited Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, a renowned music and camping venue in Live Oak, Florida. Not only does the Suwannee River run through it, the park is home to numerous natural springs as well. With over 800 acres of natural beauty, it’s a great location for the many music festivals held there such as the one John & Yvonne attended—the Suwannee Roots Rival. Meanwhile, they’ve parked their RV for the moment, while they are on a Grand World Voyage aboard Holland America Zuiderdam.

Did you know (it might seem hard to believe), that Florida actually served as the original birthplace of the American Cowboy!?!

Over the holidays, Rick & Sarah Moseley took their family to River Ranch RV Resort, a cowboy-themed resort located on the west bank of the Kissimmee River (south of Orlando) on some of the same land that those first Florida cowboys roamed years ago. The 1700 acre resort hosts the longest running Saturday night championship rodeo in the US, along with other wild-west experiences!

And a warm welcome to our newest member, Shirley Rigo, the proud new owner of a Mercedes Roadtrek SS Agile (Class B). She’s ready to take her RV on some new adventures!

Since our beginning days Wing Shooters have had nicknames or, as commonly called, tags. Usually the tag is personally picked, otherwise it has been earned based on an event or a personal characteristic. Sometimes an earned nickname commemorates a deficiency in your life. Not every Wing Shooter has a tag. The tag-less members of the Wing Shooter Society need to be careful to avoid earning a tag they can’t shake. It’s so much safer to pick your own. Wing Shooters already owning a tag sleep easier. Here’s a list of our current tags.

Disruptor (Earned) – he made frequent and un-solicited comments at our meetings. To suppress his enthusiasm he was given a gavel and put in charge of keeping order. Sometimes he uses a duck call. Hermann Amaya

Rabbit (Earned) – he’s an accomplished shooter with the glaring exception of targets that roll across the ground. Those targets are called rabbits. Robert Birkenstock

Two Way (Earned) – as a high school footballer this guy played both offense and defense. Normally this is called playing both ways. This was told in a previous article. Friends of this guy immediately jumped on this and tagged him slightly differently. It stuck. Tony Bond

Money Man (Earned) – this guy handles the money in our club. He also provides a free audit of his work. Jack Cartier

Hot Toddy (Earned) – at his first Wing Shooter meeting he told us he was a Ole Miss grad. This term is a nonsensical thing Ole Miss people say to each other. Chip Childers

Double L (Earned) – in fact well earned. Marshal can be spelled with one or two Ls. This guy was the Wing Shooter Grand Marshall for 4 years. The double L spelling has been adopted as a sign of respect. Gene Collins

Lucky (Picked) – one of those guys that no matter what happens, he always lucks out. Ken Earnst

Copperhead (Earned) – while turkey hunting a copperhead snake was discovered. In short order this guy eliminated the problem. Mark Foster

Sandman (Earned) – early in life he was called Sandy Man. Over time his tag morphed into his current tag. Sandy Hall

Reloader (Earned) – he loads shotgun shells. To do this you need a reloading machine and the components of a shell: primer, gunpowder, wad, shot, and shell case. The first 4 components must be new. The shell case can be reused. Reloaders are easy to spot. They are in the weeds for looking for shell cases. Breck Amick

Both Barrels (Picked) – this is the shooting term when both barrels are fired simultaneously. Wayne Andrews

Longbeard (Picked) – when he first joined he had a long beard. John Arsenault

Iceman (Earned) – not connected to heroic flying. He was tagged because of his personal preferences with ice. Willy Bain

Pull (Earned) – a shooter calls pull to signal the launch a clay target. His guy calls pull when he first steps up to the shooting station. He is supposed to shoot but he has no intention of doing so. He wants to see exactly where the targets fly before attempting to shoot them. John Hanner

Single Barrel (Picked) – when he first joined the club he was the only member who didn’t shoot a double barrel shotgun. Tom Hatton

Joey Longshot (Earned) – this guy would shoot at a target if the designated shooter missed. By that time the target was a long way out. Joe Klingel

True Pair (Picked) – a true pair refers to two targets that are launched at the same time. John Kollar

Best Dressed (Earned) – compared to the rest of us, this guy always wears nice shooting clothes. Dave Miller
