ONE COMMODORE’S LOG
Hello Friends, I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve as your Commodore for the coming year. When you receive this issue of Smooth Sailing, the 113th Annual Meeting will have been held. I would like to thank all of the candidates who ran for the Board of Directors and to congratulate the candidates who won the election.
On behalf of the Flag and the Board of Directors, I would like to take this opportunity to give a heartfelt thanks to Past Commodore Bill Waters for leaving our Club in such a strong position. Membership is booming and the Club is in a strong financial position. Bill’s infectious enthusiasm for our Club set the tone for a successful year. Bill, it has truly been a pleasure working together.
Well, we certainly dodged a major bullet on the landfall of Hurricane Ian. Thanks to our General Manager, Rhett Robicheaux and his staff, our hurricane preparedness plan was executed seamlessly. Fortunately, only minor damages were sustained.
The next year will be an exciting time for our Club. We should be starting construction on the replacement of the downtown marina docks with a new, state of the art floating dock system which should provide many years of service for our members.
By the first week of November we should have completed approximately 17 focus group meetings to obtain membership input for the Master Facilities Plan. Thank you to all members who volunteered to participate in these important meetings. Your input is critical to the success of the plan. In the first quarter of 2023 we will be holding a special membership meeting to consider the recommendations of the master plan. Stay tuned!
We are approaching a busy season of waterfront activities with the regatta season coming into full swing. The Fall Foiling Regatta will be held on November 5th & 6th. Come out and see this exciting event. The SPYC J70 & Mixed 15 Plus Championship is scheduled for November 12th & 13th. A highpoint for our regatta season this year will by our hosting of the J70 World Championship from October 27- November 4, 2023. Congratulations to our Regatta General Committee for landing such a prestigious event for our Club – a major feather in our Club’s hat!
Don’t forget to honor our veterans on Friday, November 11th when we have the 2nd Annual Veterans Celebration.
It’s hard for me to believe that we are already approaching the holiday season. Please keep the Club in mind for your Thanksgiving and holiday celebrations and events. Spaces are filling up fast! Seeing the Club decorated for the holidays is always special.
Connie and I look forward to seeing you on November 12th at the Commodore’s Ball honoring Commodore Bill Waters and his wife Mary.
Cordially, Brian K. Smith, Commodore
The St. Petersburg Yacht Club provides preeminent yachting and social experiences for members, their families and guests, and honors the Club’s rich yachting heritage in a welcoming environment.
General Manager’s Log
by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCMWow, how incredibly lucky we were with Hurricane Ian, as the track had us in its path right up until the last minute when it tracked south of us. I have close family and many friends from Cape Coral to Naples who have all fared well but will have a long road ahead of them. Our prayers go out to all that had to endure this historic storm. We were just miles from this being the effects we would have faced. We must count our blessings and be there for our friends and families down south this coming season.
I would like to thank and commend our team here at the Club for an outstanding team effort in storm prep and getting us back up and running in a timely manner. We have a large operation here at SPYC and it takes all hands-on deck to prepare five locations when a storm is approaching. It is always better to be prepared then not!
Most of you should have already heard but, I am pleased to announce that our very own Christian Mayrhofer is our new Executive Chef. Chef Christian earned the position, not only due to his tasting interview results, but in the way he has managed to pull the entire culinary team together, building moral, while acting as interim Executive Chef over the last couple months. Congratulations Chef Christian! We are looking forward to some great things out of our very talented culinary team!
Focus Groups/Workshops are next which will be concluding as you receive this edition of Smooth Sailing. The Future of the Club is in the hands of its membership. Hopefully with some well thought out discussion, the Committee can get back to work in putting a plan together that will take the St. Petersburg Yacht Club to the next level; becoming more competitive in the growth and development in and around our community.
**Season ahead – Grille 1909 is open for Lunch Tuesday –Friday, which makes for a quieter lunch experience ideally for a business luncheon or just out with friends. Please refer to our Dress Code Policy for dining in this outlet.
In closing, Chef Christian will be rolling out some new menu ideas for all outlets. We anticipate a record season ahead; staffing is shaping up and we are seeing some quality candidates applying lately. Cooler weather is upon us but the sun still shines above.
I look forward to seeing everyone in and around our various locations.
We had a great crowd for our Meet the Candidates Night back in October with a slate of very talented members. Everyone was in good spirits and receptive of all the candidates’ comments. This was followed by a very well attended Annual Meeting on October 11th. Our Octoberfest themed buffet was a big hit as we had to open the Commodore Room to accommodate the awesome attendance we had. Upstairs for the meeting there was standing room only for our presentations by Jack Sullivan, Ken Hart, and Patricia Sampson with Peacock + Lewis. There was a great vibe in the air the whole evening.

2022 Annual Meeting Recap
Ahuge thank you to all the members who attended the 2022 Annual Meeting! The room was packed with only standing room available in the back of the Ballroom. This was the largest member attendance for an Annual Meeting in over 10+ years. If you missed this year's meeting, be sure to watch the event online at: https://www.spyc.org/2022_annual_meeting (you will be required to login to your SPYC member account to view the video).
This year's meeting included special presentations from Jack Sullivan and Peacock and Lewis . The Long Range Planning Committee and Jack Sullivan had worked on a membership survey. The survey was distributed and completed in the fall of 2021.
·3020 surveys were sent out to members and their spouses/partners
·1,479 surveys were completed
·49% response rate
Following the membership surveys, members had the opportunity to join Mr. Sullivan and the Long Range Planning Committee for a series of discussion groups to analyze the survey results. Thank you to the roughly 80 members who joined the conversation. These responses helped to shape our next steps with Peacock and Lewis.
Peacock and Lewis are a design firm based out of Naples. The team has been tasked with taking the results from the survey to create "good, better and best" options for future clubhouse improvements. Over the next few weeks members have the option to join focus groups to learn more about these proposed plans. At the time this article was written over 300 members have registered for the focus groups. If you are interested in joining a focus group email membership@spyc.org or call (727) 892-6888.

Yachting Information Committee
by: Tim Snyder, Committee ChairOur boating season is underway with a calendar filled with championships at the club. This month SPYC will host the J70 Youth Nationals, which is building on the national momentum of high school and college sailors racing keelboats in addition to 420’s and 1-person dinghies. It will also be decision time this month on whether the Club can organize the biennial Habana Race.
On the topic of safety, hurricane season runs through the end of November. Hurricane Ian moved a lot of water and sand in our local waterways, and the shallower passes such as John’s Pass and Longboat Pass may have shoaled in new places. Also, please be wary of the potential for sunken and unmarked obstacles particularly along south and western shores and shoals. The hazards are real -- a member’s sailboat struck an unmarked obstacle in the Gulfport anchorage in September, resulting in a serious injury. And as the waterways around Sanibel and Ft. Myers are cleaned up in the months to come, please check the Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners for waterway updates and special notices at: https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/local-notices-to-mariners?district=7+0&subdistrict=n
Finally, I’d like to thank Donna Sue Marks for 6 years of leading the Yachting Information Committee. She has provided much guidance as Susan and I feel our way along in our new role. And if you’d like to assist with this committee, please reach out to me at timsnyder33705@gmail.com
"Calling all eBikers!"
What is an eBike and why are they so popular? eBikes are a regular bicycle that has been adapted with an electric motor. These bikes come in all sizes and can be pedal assisted or pedal assisted with a throttle. The Light Electric Vehicle Association projects that the U.S. imported approximately 790,000 eBikes in 2021 and sales for 2022 are projected to be over 1,000,000. With over 3,000 estimated to be in the Tampa Bay area, it is time to see if there is an interest in forming a "riding group" within the SPYC.
The SPYC is located in a hub of very popular Pinellas County bike trails. Not only do we have the 37 mile Pinellas Trail one block away but we have Beach Drive to Weedon Island Preserve, as well as connections to the Skyway and Fort Desoto trail. Check out the many trails in Pinellas County at: https://www.pinellascounty.org/trailgd/PDF/explore_pinellas_ map.pdf
One of our members, Douglas Townes , is an experienced eBike rider who has participated and led several local rides within the "eBike Enthusiasts of Florida" Facebook group. Douglas has volunteered to lead an eBike ride that would start and end at the SPYC. Bring your eBike and let's meet up in the lower level of the parking deck for a ride to Gulfport. This will be a 25 mile ride using protected trails and back streets. We usually average traveling at approximately 10 -12 miles per hour but, ride speed is determined by the comfort level and experience of the riders. Check your weekly E-news for details on when this event will take place.
We should be returning to the Club in approximately 2.5 hours where we can have lunch (optional) and discuss our next ride. There will be a 20 minute break in downtown Gulfport near a public restroom. Water bottles are recommended but there are plenty of water fountains along the trail and in Gulfport. This will be a moderate level ride but "new-bees" are welcome. Don't have an eBike but you have a regular bike and you want to join in? Sure! Come with your regular bike and join this "fun" ride. This is our first attempt to see if there is enough interest within the SPYC to have regular organized bike rides.

CAR CLUB
Cooler weather at last, although did not even need a brush with Hurricane Ian. One thing noticed around the Club is the number of collectable and high-end cars that made their way to higher ground courtesy of the Clubs garage, so thank you management for tolerating the extend stay - we do love our cars! We are now getting deep into the planning for next years St. Pete Motor Classic Car Show, and it was great to see some 30+ Club members show up for our first meeting. It looks like we will have a strong organizing team. For those that missed it, the show will be on February 5, 2023. In addition to the organizing team, we still need plenty of volunteers for the day of. Previous years we had 100+ working the show, so it’s not too early to throw your hat into the ring and let me know. In early October we began mailings to past entrants, car clubs, and previous sponsors. Now we have not forgotten the regular Car Club monthly meetings. The sad thing is finding those to help organize regular meet-ups, and of course this applies to car enthusiast of every persuasion, new old, classic, or just for the love of cars. I am looking to have a casual meeting at the Beach Club in December, and we have an open invite to Sarasota Yacht Club, who have their own car club. Car enthusiasts with a passion for organizing give me a call!
This past few months I attended a few other club meetings, notably the Suncoast Jaguar and Tampa Bay British Car Club, along with several of the popular Cars & Coffee meetings. I am hoping that we can maybe start regular meet-ups with members bringing and showing their cars, maybe coffee with a bit of show and tell. To all members and friends, now is the time to think about entering your car in the 2023 show. Online registration will be active November 1st. There will be a link though the Car Show website at: www.stpetemotorclassic.com
RIDERS
CLUB
by Bob Frazee, PresidentLast month’s article covered our ride up to the Smoky Mountains and our first 2 days in Waynesville, NC. Picking up where we left off last month, the weather finally started to clear up by our 3rd day in the Smokies, so we spent our remaining days riding some of the best routes in the entire area. We ventured into Tennessee to ride The Tail of the Dragon, which is one of the most famous roads in the Smokies for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts. It has 318 curves packed into 11 spectacular miles, beginning in Deals Gap, NC. After a coffee break there, we completed a round trip ride into Tennessee and back on the Dragon. The road was still wet, so we proceeded cautiously and enjoyed a great ride and terrific views along the route.
The next day, we headed east toward Ashville, NC, then south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A lunch break at Pisgah Inn on the Parkway provided us with more incredible views. After lunch we continued along the parkway to its southern end near Cherokee, NC. On our last day in Waynesville, we split into different groups, as everyone had certain rides they wanted to complete before heading back south. Robert Hopkins and I decided on tackling The Rattler, another famous ride along SR 209 north to Hot Springs, NC. We started our journey home on Friday, September 16th. Not wanting to retrace our route up to Waynesville, we headed SE on US 276 through the mountains to US 64 W to US 178 S, and into SC, then several state and county roads to Dublin, GA, where we stopped for the night. The next morning, we took US 221 S to US 129 thru some picturesque farm country in southern GA and into FL. Then US 98 to Crystal River, FL, south on SR 589 to Tampa and I275 back to St. Petersburg.
RV LAND CRUISERS
by Angela Kowalik, Wagon MasterOurepic Summer of 2022 series continues with this third installment of a new story:
Larry & Joy Wissing took an extended road trip around the “lower 48”. Larry said they’ve been seven months on the road…and the bilge pump never came on… (that’s for all our boating friends out there)!
Planning started last Winter (2021) when the Wissing’s decided to take another Adventure Caravans tour…this time it’s the Lewis and Clark (L&C) Trail. Larry encourages reading “Undaunted Courage” by Steven Ambrose, detailing the entire event from President Jackson commissioning Merriweather Lewis to put together an expedition west to find a trade route to the Pacific Ocean. The entire L&C round trip was to push, pull and portage boats and canoes up against and sometimes down the Mighty (muddy) Missouri river. On May 14, 1804, the thirty-member expedition went up the Missouri River, crossed the Continental Divide of the Americas near the Lemhi Pass, eventually coming to the Columbia River, and the Pacific Ocean in 1805. The return voyage began on March 23, 1806, at Fort Clatsop, Oregon, and ended on September 23rd of the same year. Only one member of the expedition died during the of trip of appendicitis (Sergeant Charles Floyd)—all twenty-nine members returned home after the grueling 2-year trek.
The Wissing’ left Florida May 5th and headed to Saint Louis, MO to rendezvous with the group on May 11th to follow the 47-day RV tour along the L&C historic trail—from Missouri River north to the mountains then St. Louis & Platte City, MO. During the tour, there are non-RV guided excursions to museums and many sites off the beaten path: Gretna, NE (Strategic Air Command Museum) Sioux City, SD (interpretive center), Mitchell SD (Corn Palace, yes covered in real Corn - seeing is believing!), Pierre SD (Ata Lakota Museum and cultural school showing how the Indians along the route were both helpful and a problem at times for their trip), Bismarck, ND (narrated riverboat cruise, getting a sense of what these guys had to do going against the current for thousands of miles), Epping, ND (knife river Indigenous village), and several stops in Montana: Fort Peck (interesting that these forts were more of a trading post to help trappers and Indigenous people get what they needed and not really a military use), Great Falls, Helena MT, and Dillion. So many wonderful sites visited, and so many more in our country... 47 days is not long enough! Seeing all this from a large front window is amazing, doing it with a group makes it incredibly special. Stayed tuned for future Part 2 (L&C down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean, and home again).
To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com
BROAD REACHERS
by Carol HansenOn September 10th, the Broad Reachers held their first General Meeting in a while with fifteen members present. The following officers were announced: Captain – Carol Hansen; Race Captain – Katie Rodgers; Secretary – Juliette Clark; FWSA 1st Delegate – Gloria Davis, 2nd Delegate – Katie Rodgers, and Alternate – K T Trudeau. We are now 40 members strong!! Plans were made for the upcoming 50th Commodore Lucas Cup Regatta on October 14th. Gloria Davis will be the PRO for this event. We hope to have a full complement of 14 Optis on the water.
Marti Cochran and Audrey Orgo will be representing the Broad Reachers in the Annual FWSA Championship race held this year in Sarasota in 420s on November 7th. Prior to the meeting, we rolled out the boats, rigged and had a wonderful sail around Bird Island and up and down the inlets. We had seven out sailing with Katie and Audrey using the Club’s kayak as our Safety Boat. The next week, Katie and her crew had a quick sail before lunch. A small but mighty group! Our newest member, Dana Hollman, sailed for the first time in an Opti and Katie said she did great!! The Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us at Pass-a-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. There is no such thing as “too little” experience to join the Broad Reachers. We’ll help you learn and have fun doing it! Our Saturday morning sails are usually followed by lunch at the club. Contact Carol Hansen (carol@dband1.com) for more information.

CRUISING FLEET
by Kevin Cross, Fleet CaptainThis is not the article I had planned to write this month. Hurricane Ian changed that. While we are very thankful that Ian largely spared St. Petersburg, our hearts are heavy for our neighbors to the South. In tribute to those most impacted by Ian, we are featuring here photos of these special places taken during our 2022 Commodore’s Cruise. May the rebuild and recovery of these communities be swift and strong.
Many thanks to Paul & Gini Berry who diligently served as Port Directors for the Venice cruise that was not meant to be. Kitchen renovations and dock power issues did not deter Paul, Gini, and our cruisers from planning a late September swap with the Venice Yacht Club. However, by Friday, September 23rd, it became clear that Hurricane Ian was going to impact SW Florida and the cruise was cancelled. While Ian necessitates changes to our 2023 cruising calendar, we do hope to return to Venice next Spring.
