COMMODORE’S LOG

Hello Friends.....as this is my final Commodore’s Log, it is a good time to pause and reflect on the many events of the past year. Your Board of Directors and Committees have been quite busy! A record number of successful sailing regattas were held and our SPYC sailors represented the Club wonderfully. We are honored to be hosting one of the most important regattas in the storied history of our Club – the J-70 World Championships from October 30th - November 5th of this year.

· New automated parking gates were installed at the downtown Club. The dock replacement project has begun. A new long-term master plan for replacement of the downtown clubhouse was approved and membership activity continues to be strong.

· Our Annual Meeting and Election of Directors will take place on October 10th. In case you missed the first ‘’Meet the Candidates Night’’, a second opportunity for you to get to know the candidates will be held on October 3rd in the Heritage Lounge at 6:00 pm.

· October will be a busy month with the Poker Run at Pass-aGrille on October 14th and the Member Appreciation Party on October 22nd. The Commodore’s Ball will be held on November 11th. Connie and I hope to see you there.

I would like to thank all Club members for giving me the opportunity to serve as Commodore for 2022-2023. Your support is greatly appreciated. Many volunteers contributed to the Club’s success this year. I would like to offer special thanks to my fellow Flag Officers and the Board of Directors for their outstanding collaboration.

I am confident that the leadership of our Club will be in good hands next year. Please join me in wishing the best of good fortune to our incoming Commodore, Flag Officers and Board of Directors.

Cordially,

As we embark on a new Clubhouse in the years ahead let’s not forget the Club's G.E.M. Fund. The double wheel in the Compass Room is a version of the USS Constitution’s original double wheel that was conceived, designed and built by a team of SPYC members out of love and respect for their Club.

The purpose of the wheel is to provide a place to mount nameplates with the names of members of the Wheel Club, which is an ongoing program established to enable the funding of capital improvement projects through endowments, gifts and memorials which will use as its symbol, a ships wheel. The beautiful wheel was built during the summer of 1998, in the shop of Captain Dave Shreve with the close assistance of Fred Corbishley. (Please contact the office if you have any interest in this storied tradition.) The gifts below are merely starting points. Membership in the Wheel Club is available at three levels:

1. Captain – Receives a Wheel Club lapel pin, Engraved plaque on the Wheel ~ $2,000

2. Commodore – Receives Wheel Club lapel pin with ruby, Engraved plaque on the wheel with a Gem representing a ruby ~ $5,000

3. Admiral – Receives a Wheel Club lapel pin with diamond, Engraved plaque on the wheel with a Gem representing a diamond ~ $10,000

General Manager’s Log by:

Can you believe it’s already October – we must be having too much fun! Fall is in the air, Football is back and so is a packed schedule of events here at the Club. Please refer to the Weekly E-blast, Website and Smooth Sailing for event details. Pleae Mark Your Calendar for these important dates: Meet the Candidate’s Night on Tuesday, October 3rd at 6:00 pm and the Annual Meeting & Election of Directors on Tuesday, October 10th.

There has been a lot of discussion about menus and when they are going to change. Our menus change on a quarterly basis at both locations, which isn’t a complete overhaul due to the popularity of some items on the menu. What we have now added is the weekly specials page that will be changed out each week; it will consist of five items – Small Plate – Comfort – Pasta – From the Farm – Dessert. Please give us your feedback so we can continue to improve these offerings to our membership. Our Up in Smoke Nights have been very popular, as Chef Tim has really embraced our new smoker here at the Club. He is our true Pit Masterkeep up the great work Chef Tim!

Additionally, we started a series of Back of House Tours in September because of a request from a group of members. The first one went so well we decided to continue to do them if the membership is willing to sign-up. The Tours are conducted by myself, Chef Christian, and Steve our Facilities Director and we start with the downstairs kitchen, all mechanical rooms, storage areas then proceed to the second floor touring the same areas. The tour takes about an hour and is limited to 10 people starting at 1:00 pm on Fridays; right after our Bell Ringer Lunch we meet in the main lobby of the Club by the front desk. And to recap, Annual Shutdown projects at Pass-a-Grille this year included -- kitchen repairs, carpet and chair cleaning, and the parking lot restriped and coated. We also moved a couple handicap parking spots closer to the main entrance.

I would like to congratulate and thank Commodore Smith for his leadership this past year. Each year comes with its unique challenges and Commodore Smith handled each situation in a calm, thoughtful and professional manner. I commend him for tackling some tough issues and some historic decisions that will take this Club well into the future. Thank you, Commodore Smith, for your support of the Club and myself. To the Board Members stepping down we thank you for your service. To those stepping into new positions, we look forward to working together. In closing, we are back in full swing, and excited for yet another great year. We are here to make every experience at SPYC a memorable one. I look forward to seeing you around the Club soon.

Cheers,

JODY ABRAMS Active Boat Member Since 2015

I grew up in Louisiana and was part of Pontchartrain Yacht Club’s first opti fleet. This love of sailing helped lead me to Florida in 2011. My wife, Angela, and I have five wonderful children. My oldest son enjoyed sailing in the Catamaran world during his teen years, and currently my daughter enjoys sailing her opti with the SPYC Race Team. I also campaign the Melges 32, Arista, in the local area. I learned from my father that it is important to be involved in your Yacht Club, not only for yourself but for the next generation of sailors. I believe that serving in various roles of an organization is a way to give back to a sport that we care about so much.

FRED BICKLEY, JR. Active Boat Member Since 1998

I grew up at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and have represented it as a sailor since the age of seven. I became a member as soon as I turned 21, and was actively involved as an Intermediate Member. My years as member of the Board, various committees, and as a sailing coach gave me insight into the Club workings. I met my wife during the Regata del Sol al Sol to Isla Mujeres, and proposed to her here at this Club. SPYC is a special place to me, and I believe I have and always will contribute to the Club as a member, a sailor, and hopefully again as a Board member.

FRANK FRAZE Active Member Since 1984

I was born in Gainesville, Florida but raised in St. Petersburg and have lived here nearly all of my Life (59 years). I grew up sailing at the St. Petersburg YC Sailing Center. After attending the University of Florida and graduating with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in architecture, I then moved back to St. Petersburg to start my career. I have an Architectural Engineering Firm in downtown St. Petersburg and am married with one grown son; who is also a member. I’ve been a member for 39 years and enjoyed my past terms serving on the Board and on several Committees. I am invested in SPYC and this community, and have been proud to be a contributor to the Club and its members.

MARY HACKER Active Member Since 2008

My love of yachting came by way of the Great Lakes, spending my first 21 summers boating and fishing in Sandusky, Ohio with my family on “The Mary Jane.” I have lived first-hand what the water can do for a kid growing up. My leadership and technical skills were honed by Price Waterhouse, Deloitte and Touché and later as VP/CFO of two separate banks and a bank holding company in Sarasota, Florida. I have enjoyed the camaraderie of working with the PassA-Grille Woman’s Club as Treasurer and the City of St. Pete Beach as Chair of the Finance Committee over the last 8 and 10 years, respectively. I remain committed to the hard work and dedication required to move our Club forward.

FREDERICK HIGHAM Active Boat Member Since 1996

I have been a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club for over 25 years and practiced law in St. Petersburg for over 45 years. The first Club Committee I served on was the Race Committee for which I continue to volunteer. I was appointed Chairman of the Marina Focus Group in 2019 and currently serve as Chairman of the Marina Redevelopment Oversight Committee which is overseeing the redevelopment of our Downtown Marina. I am excited to bring this project to a conclusion and provide the Club with a world-class marina. I want to see the Club continue its international racing and boating heritage and continue to promote its waterfront activities.

MICHAEL MAGIDSON Active Member Since 2020

I am a Pinellas County native and grew up as a member of Carlouel Yacht Club on Clearwater Beach - my great-grandparents were among the founding members - and I have always enjoyed the social atmosphere that private clubs offer. I am a local lawyer with the Johnson Pope firm and have three school-age children. I primarily use the Club for social activities - dining, hosting clients, friends and family, and as a place for after-work get-togethers. I am interested in serving on the Club’s Board of Directors at this time since I think this is a critical time in the Club’s history as we replace the downtown clubhouse and position the Club for success in its next century.

ROB MATTHES Active Boat Member Since 2016

I am a veteran of the US Navy where I worked on the nuclear capable Talos Missile System. I am an active boater and a member of SPYC for 7 years. I started boating/sailing in Chicago over 36 years ago on a J22. I have served on the Cruising Fleet Committee, Port Committee and Finance Committee. I am the Founder and President of two Technology Companies, which were started from the ground up, where tough decisions were made over the 25 years. Running two companies takes passion, focus and dedication, it’s important to listen to customers/members to set and achieve goals within financial constraints. These are the experiences I bring to the SPYC Board of Directors.

PATRICK RYAN Active Boat Member Since 2021

Joining SPYC in 2021, following our son, has been a great fit for my wife and I in this season of our life, and refreshed a tradition her parents started over 50 years ago at Pass-a-Grille YC. Since becoming a member, I’ve enjoyed contributing to the Membership Committee by using my 45 years of banking experience.

My family and I are excited about SPYC’s future. I am happy to use my community experience, which includes service as Trustee Committee Chairman at my church, as well as my financial background, to help the Club maintain its status as a quality investment for families in St. Petersburg. I hope to serve the Club as a Board Member and continue to positively impact future growth and development.

DEBBIE STOREY Active Boat Member Since 2020

I am an active member of the Club, a member of the Cruising Fleet for several years, and serve on the Cruising Fleet Committee. I also serve on the Finance Committee, giving me insight into the operations and finances of the Club.

I’m passionate about the future of our Club. We’re at an important point in our evolution, and I’d like to play a role in helping us shape that future, and represent the voices of our diverse membership base. I spent 33 years with AT&T, leading big operations, eventually as Officer and EVP. Retiring in 2016, and became the President & CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, executing a financial turnaround and successfully leading the organization through COVID. Retired in 2022.

KATE CLARDY Intermediate Member Since 2018

I began sailing a decade ago in the BVI during a leadership training course. That summer sparked a love of sailing and led me to the decision to attend USFSP to continue sailing and delve into the world of racing. St. Pete’s sailing community welcomed me with open arms, and soon, I became a proud member of this Club where I passionately pursued my place among the Salty Sisters. Currently, I’m serving as Marketing Chair on the Ocean Racing Committee, eagerly preparing to contribute to the success of our upcoming racing season. My unwavering passion for sailing, Club commitment, and my SS experience uniquely qualify me to contribute to the board of our beloved Club. I’ll uphold our highest standards and be a committed voice.

BRAD DEMINT Intermediate Member Since 2021

As a St. Petersburg native and graduate of Northeast High School, I am deeply engaged in our community. Professionally I am the senior account executive at Greenleaf Title and host of the “How to Win with Brad DeMint” podcast. I am committed to the Club’s success, and aim to contribute my skills and passion as a Board member. Recognizing the potential of the Yacht Club’s development, I leverage my extensive real estate experience to envision growth and enhanced facilities. With a talent for identifying opportunities, I’m dedicated to strategically approaching this development for the benefit of all members. I’ve also served on the Entertainment Committee for the past 2 years planning fun, successful Club events and meeting new people, and look forward to serving you.

TWILIGHT SAILING SERIES 2023

The Club just wrapped up its 50th “Twilight Series” summer race. And a successful season, at that! We completed 20 races out of the 24 available Friday nights. More than 40 boats participated in those races. We also have a good number of winners because many of the boats raced often.

The J/70 fleet continues to provide some exciting OneDesign challenges. And for the first time in ages, we have a Sonar award. The recently acquired Sonars have generated a very competitive NonSpinnaker class.

Once again, this series wouldn’t survive year after year without the dedicated race committee that has made it happen. Paul Goodman has driven our Signal Boat, Coast Pilot, and has attained his Principal Race Officer rating during the season. Barbara Goodman had kept us sane with her concise recording and scoring. Selga Sakss, our impeccable announcer and timer has been supporting “Twilight” for many, many years. Liesa Waxman and KT Trudeau have been learning it all and KT is an accomplished Signal Boat driver.

A major enhancement to recent seasons is our Mark/Safety Boat, aptly commanded by Larry Massingill, Salty Sister Co-Captain, Valerie Massingill and Rory Maher. Put this valuable Summer "on the water" entertainment on your calendar next year, in March, when the clock changes. See you there!

It's time for the FALL POKER RUN! What is a Poker Run? It's not a race. It's a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC.

On Poker Run day, boaters meet at the PAG docks and show off their well-curated boat themes. Upon arriving they will check-in and receive a nautical map which charts their path of adventure. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip. The stops are a combination of gracious member's waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted.

Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Dock Stop. It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with!

CRUISING FLEET

Tampa Yacht & Country Club was our August cruise destination. Always a popular cruise, we scheduled two back-to-back weekends allowing 12 boats (six per group) plus several iron dinghies to participate. Barbara & Heber Weller were Port Directors for Group 1 with Kathy & Larry Church taking on duties for Group 2. With Port Directors sharing ideas along the way, both groups followed similar plans for docktails and dinner. To escape the summer heat, cruisers gathered indoors for docktails at the Crow’s Nest Bar. Following docktails, cruisers enjoyed dinner each night at TYCC, one in the more formal Pilot House and one in the Crow’s Nest. As usual, the food and service were excellent.

On Saturday, the first group went by dinghy to Davis Island YC for lunch followed by a dinghy tour of the Tampa port. The second group’s excursion was to SHUFFLE, a relatively new indoor shuffleboard facility, in Tampa Heights, complete with full bar and casual food options. After receiving some quick instructions on the rules of shuffleboard, the group enjoyed time on the courts reporting that shuffleboard is harder than you would expect! Cruisers also enjoyed the TYCC pool and amazing sunrises.

Our September luncheon program featured renowned weather forecaster and router, Chris Parker, and his colleague, meteorologist Stormy Stickle, of the Marine Weather Center. Weather is always a favorite topic of conversation amongst cruisers and it was helpful to hear about latest developments in forecasting and weather routing. We also previewed our preliminary cruising calendar for 2024. To accommodate our large fleet, we are planning more cruises including three different options for our extended Commodore’s Cruise in the spring. To learn more, check out our cruising calendar on the Fleet’s CWC page and/or attend one of our meetings.

Speakers for Cruising Fleet Meetings:

* Oct 5th Dinner: Terry Fluke, Executive Dir., Tampa Bay Pilots Association

* Oct 27th - 29th Anna Maria cruise 1

* Nov 2nd Lunch: Chris Steinocher, CEO, St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce

* Nov 3rd - 5th Anna Maria cruise 2

* Nov 17th - 19th Twin Dolphin & Bradenton YC cruise

SALTY SISTERS

Over the summer, Salty Sisters sailing and race committee activities took place in a variety of venues. At home, Saltys were well represented in the Twilight series. New skipper Audrey Orgo placed second in nonSpinnaker Sonar. J70 team “Salted” placed third in the J70 category. Race Committee for the Twilight series was composed mainly of Salty Sisters and Briny Brothers. Gloria Davis, PRO, Barbara Goodman, recorder and scorer, Paul Goodman, Selga Sakss, timer, and KT Trudeau, newly certified driver of Coast Pilot, manned the signal boat. Mark boat was crewed by Valerie Massingill and Briny Brother Larry.

Salty Sisters Dee Gill, Els Wiemken and Jennifer Parramore, along with Cathy Lasky (SPYC) and Dingy Dames/FWSA Captain Lynne Randall (DIYC) have been sailing as the team Salted for over a year. They also competed in the St. Petersburg Sailing Association series. Audrey Orgo, whose boat finished 1st in class in the Classic Regatta and 3rd in class in Helly Hansen, raced the Bone Island Regatta to Key West.

Further north, Marti Cochran hosted a large Florida contingent at the Sunfish Women's North American Championship in Delaware, August 19-20. Marti and Captain Dee Gill competed in “very active conditions!” Jen O’Neill has been crewing on a Marshall 18 Sanderling catboat or skippering her own Marshall 15 Sandpiper every Saturday for club races at Little Egg Harbor YC, on Long Beach Island, Beach Haven, NJ. She also raced in the Sandpiper Nationals, which was cohosted by Bay Head and Mantoloking Yacht Clubs and the 4th Annual Catboat Rendezvous (with Briny Brother Joe) hosted by Spray Beach YC.

Suzanne Boohar raced her 17 ft O’Day daysailer in Massachusetts and won 3rd place in the New England Daysailer Championship! Sue Davidson trimmed main on Kyrie, her friend’s Tartan 4100, coming in 2nd at Block Island Race Week this year. Salty Sisters Helle Getz, Gina Bowden-Pierce and Barbara Mehaffey were also busy this summer, serving on Race Committee for the Chicago Yacht Club. These ladies worked the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series, CYC Navigational Rallies and the prestigious CYC Race to Mackinac

To prepare for the 2023-2024 season, many Saltys took advantage of summer courses offered by the SPYC Sailing Center: Sonar orientation and spinnaker, J70 orientation and racing. Co-captain Valerie Massingill also organized a boating safety course, taught by Zac Oppenheim. Saltys are looking forward to the resumption of Wednesday morning sailing on September 13th.

Fall is here and the Ladies Beach Club is celebrating October with a “spooky” event on October 16th! Was your ancestor accused of being a Witch? It seems like everyone is researching family history these days. Learn about events in 1692 that led to the New England Witch Trials. You might find someone lurking in your closet! Be warned - we will be looking for the Witch with the best hat!

The Ladies Beach Club is 104 members strong and has so many special interest groups to keep you connected and engaged. If you’re not a member, it’s not too late to join and experience the fun!

Joining or renewing? Dues are just $32.00 and worth every penny! Contact our Membership Chair Helle Getz (sailtym@yahoo.com) or refer to our membership form found online at www.spyc.org (log-in to your Member Portal then click on "Clubs Within the Club, then LBC - form is on page 2). Hope to see you at the beach!

BROAD REACHERS

The“Broads” got off to a hot and sweaty start on August 26th with our season kickoff work party. Barbara Goodman inspected sails. Juliette Clark and Dana & Allie Kollman checked for issues with the boats. Gloria Davis kept our running list for needed repairs and went through the race committee stuff. KT Trudeau engineered a system to store our transportation pads. It was a great day, and a job well done.

We have some fun events planned for this fall. First up is the Commodore Lucas Cup on October 13th, with Carol Hansen in charge. On October 28th, we are trying something new… a Halloween Costume Regatta at PAG. You have to wear a costume to participate! Chef Jonathan is already thinking up of a spooky lunch to follow. We will have some awards in the spirit of Halloween, and no doubt there will be some candy involved.

We love new members, and we encourage SPYC women to consider joining the Broad Reachers. We sail most Saturday mornings, September through mid-May at PAG. No experience necessary! For more information contact our Captain, Gloria Davis: gloriadavis1200@gmail.com.

The beginnings of Wing Shooters society date back to late 2012 when Sandy Schoenberg was the SPYC Commodore, he received a request for a SPYC team to participate at a charity shotgun shooting event. Sandy was not a shooter, he didn’t even own a shotgun, but he knew members who did. After a few calls Sandy corralled a team of three experienced shooters to join his team; Robert Birkenstock, John Bowman and John Hanner. The event was hosted by a group called the Rough Riders benefitting local charities and was held at the Tampa Bay Sporting Clays Club. Sandy remembers his initial thoughts about sporting clays from that day. -- “I didn’t shoot that day, I was the taxi driver in a golf cart. You ride around in the woods, stopping frequently. It was like golf but more fun.”

Everyone had a great time and shortly afterward Sandy organized a dinner to relive the day. Joe Klingel, an avid shooter, was also invited to the dinner. The consensus at that first dinner was to get something going to promote regular shooting. Robert Birkenstock took this to heart. Sandy remembers “Birky just kept calling.” That was the spark that pushed the group into action. Informal trips to the range began and word spread bringing shotgun enthusiasts out of the woodwork of the Club.

The group grew quickly and organization was deemed necessary. Three participants from the charity shoot, Sandy Schoenberg, Robert Birkenstock and John Hanner plus Joe Klingel put the pieces together. This group became the Four Marshals, the ad hoc governing body of the group now known as the Wing Shooters Society.

PASSPORT CLUB

October 5th: Sandy and Bob MacNeil, The South of France in a Self-drive Boat. The Canal du Midi, north to south, navigating 60 plus locks through beautiful countryside. Pull over to a canal side restaurant or forage the local markets. On the Canal du Midi you have it at your pace and your way!

November 9th, 2023 (Please note this will be the 2nd Thursday of the month): Peter Plumb, Sailing Greenland.

June, 2022 Peter Plumb and most of his family and some friends chartered a 75’ steel schooner, the “Sky Dancer”, to explore parts of the West coast of Greenland. The cruise centered around Disko Bay north of the Arctic Circle. For 10 days they cruised among icebergs, icefloe and glaciers, big and small, visiting some of the small local villages that dot the area and the surrounding islands.

Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters should contact Grand Marshal

Frank Robinson at: fhr506@gmail.com

RV LAND CRUISERS

Alaska is at the top of most people’s bucket list. That’s why Angela & Brian Kowalik returned there again this year. While visiting Alaska, most people would agree there are a few highlights to experience or see and you will be asked about them if you go to Alaska….:

• The beautiful scenery

• The wildlife (like moose, caribou, bears, and whales)

• The Northern Lights

• Mt. Denali (and Denali National Park)

This trip did not disappoint, and there are no words to explain or describe the magnificence of the surroundings or the thrill of seeing the animals (with photo proof), or the ever-elusive Northern Lights and Mt. Denali. How is your bucket list going?

Upcoming Event: Fall Y’all at St. Augustine RV Resort

November 16th -19th (3 nights). Hope you can join us!

To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com.
