It has been another busy week at school. The assembly on Monday was about one of our school values ‘Friendship’. I discussed that friendship is one of the most powerful things in the world and it involves spending time with someone we like, and who likes being with us. We can have friendships with pets, friendships at school, friendships with people we’ve known since we were babies and friendships with people we have met recently, maybe through taking part in an activity or club outside of school. I asked for ideas about what makes a good friend and the children suggested many ideas which included someone that cares about other people, listens, is kind, is respectful, tells the truth, is compassionate and someone that makes us feel happy. Then I mentioned that story books feature unlikely friendships.

In Charlotte’s Web, a little girl called Fern makes friends with a pig (Wilbur), and Wilbur makes friends with a Spider Charlotte).

In The Fox and the Hound, the fox and the hound are meant to be enemies, but they don’t let that stop them being friends.

In Zog, Princess Pearl becomes friends with the dragon who is supposed to capture her.

In The Smeds and the Smoos, the two families don’t like to mix with each other. However, two of the characters decide that they don’t care about their families’ differences, and they become firm friends. The characters don’t mind that they are different; they don’t let that stop them being friends. Friendship is a very powerful thing.

On Wednesday I had the privilege to go on the Year 3 London trip. The children travelled by train from York to London. They visited the British Museum which is the setting for their themed text this term. The children enjoyed visiting the Egyptian section and recognising many artefacts mentioned in the themed book. After lunch the children went to the Apollo Victoria theatre to watch a sensational production of Wicked. The children then went to an Italian restaurant before catching the train back to York. It was such a brilliant trip for the children, and I know they thoroughly enjoyed the day in our capital city. Huge thanks to all of the staff who accompanied the children and to Miss Collins, Mrs McCurrie and Mrs Clarke for organising the trip.

As you will be aware, we sent parents the class lists for next academic year 2023/24. Each year we mix up the children in the classes and our rationale for doing so is to promote inclusivity and community to enable children to work and learn collaboratively with their peers. The class lists have been created using the professional judgement of teachers based on a wide range of factors and our in-depth knowledge of how your children interact in school. Next Tuesday we have our induction afternoon where children across the school move to their new classes for next year. Our new teachers Miss Crosbie and Mrs Alexander will be in school working with their new classes.

Our annual Sports Day, a highlight of the school year for many will be held on Thursday. Reception and Year 1 will be competing in the morning and Year 2 and Year 3 will have their opportunity in the afternoon. Parents and Grandparents are more than welcome to spectate and there will be refreshments throughout the day.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Best Wishes

Instrumental Lessons in School

As we head to the end of term I will be starting to talk to the children in Reception to Year 2 about the different instruments available to learn from September.

If your child is already learning an instrument in school and you would like them to continue, you do not need to do anything.

If your child is currently in Year 1 and has been learning the recorder, please note their lesson will become a 30min lesson from September unless you wish to give notice.

In Year 2 we usually recommend only having lessons on one musical instrument.

In Year 3, we can discuss pupils having lessons on two instruments where appropriate.

If you would like to give notice on music lessons, please do so by emailing a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk

If you would like to sign your child up to learn a new instrument, please fill in the following form https://stpetersyork.jotform.com/221172681611853. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs Hayden.

Individual Music lessons are offered for the following instruments:

Year 1 - recorders, taught in pairs. Please note you do not need to sort out a pair of children to sign your child up, our recorder teacher will sort the pairings out in September.

Year 2 and 3 lessons are all taught as individual lessons on the following instruments:

Year 2 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello and guitar

Year 3 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, pocket cornet (smaller version of a cornet/trumpet, once the child has grown enough they can transfer onto a full sized instrument easily) or pbone (lighter version of a trombone - students once grown enough can easily transfer onto a trombone from this instrument) and drums.

The fees for 2023/24 are:

£25 per 30-minute lesson. Hire charge of £37 per term where appropriate. Please note we do not hire recorders, guitars or pianos.

Children in Year 1 will have a shared lesson with another pupil. Therefore please note that tuition fees for Year 1 are £12.50 per pupil.

York Symphony Orchestra open rehearsal Sunday 25th June 3-4pm

Year 2 children maybe interested to hear a live orchestra play the music by Bizet we have been listening to in class.

Please see the attached poster for details.

P.E.

The past week has been filled with ever-building excitement ahead of sports day.

Across all years, the events featured have been the focus of our PE lessons. A huge well done goes to our Year 2 and Year 3 children who have had amazing resilience this week when running the 600m race in the heat, well done for pacing yourselves throughout the race!

From sack races to relays, it has been awesome to see the children thoroughly enjoying their athletics events and we can't wait to see it all come together on the big day. I think it's time to rest those legs over the weekend! See you next week, super stars!

Sports Day Timings:

10:00am-12:00pm Reception and Year 1 1:00pm-3:00pm Year 2 and Year 3

• The morning and afternoon sports day will take place on the 1st XV rugby pitch.

• Refreshments will be provided outside the dining room.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of you there.

We have been celebrating our wonderful Dad's this week. We have read books about dad's and discussed all the funny and fun things that our Dad's say and do that makes them so special.

The Acorn's drew their dad's portraits, and we were delighted to see all the unique expressions on their dad's faces. We wish all the dad's a wonderful Father's Day this Sunday and we hope they will enjoy eating and sharing their 'sweet' bowties.

In celebration of the hot sunny weather, we did some extra special water play activities outside. We designed little boats out of pool noodles and watched them float and move in the breeze. We played with water syringes and bubbly water, which ended up being a great way to cool each other down. It also made the Acorn's little hand muscles work hard when pulling the syringes to draw up the water and then squirt it.

This week we also explored the different modes of transport that we might use to get to a holiday destination. We used our imagination playing at the Tuff tray airport. We built an aeroplane at Forest School out of logs and wooden pallets, and the children enjoyed handing out and punching tickets for our indoor classroom train.

FUN IN THE SUN!

Just a few things that we've been enjoying this week;

Too hot - no problem - we've made the BEST dens!

We enjoyed our lollies so much that we made our very own, using our fresh, juicy oranges.

Painting and printing symmetrical butterflies like the ones we've seen outside. Driving around in our 'crate' cars!

Swinging under the tree, feeling the breeze has been a must! Working together to make obstacle courses

Fathers Day - tasty treats and sparkly cards are on their way! And as always, DANCING!

RECEPTION

The sun has got his hat on, hip–hip-hip hooray! The sun has got his hat on and is coming out to play! What a gloriously sunny week it has been for Reception and there has been lots of amazing learning through play this week.

We have been building dens and traps in our outdoor area, planting sunflower seeds ready to grow over the summer and started to draw our own maps, developing our mapping skills.

RJ had their Forest School session with Mr Tickle, where they watched as he lit a fire safely and demonstrated how to build an impressive den!

In Maths, the children have been working hard on their number bonds to 5 and 10, playing games of snap and number bond races to consolidate their learning. We have also continued looking at odd and even numbers and sharing numbers fairly.

In Literacy, we are super writers! We have been using our phonics to help write sentences about inspirational pictures during our writing sessions as well as writing some special cards for Sunday. Inspired by the work of Vincent Van Gogh, we have drawn and painted sunflowers for a special person this weekend, all shall be revealed on Sunday!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

RECEPTION

We have had a wonderful (and hot) week at school in the sunshine! We have started writing our fabulous Big Dreams, Little People books about our hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future. There has been lots of lovely conversations about where we were born, who is in our family and what makes us unique.

We also started another theme text this week ‘All the Ways to be Smart’ and have been celebrating all the wonderful and magical ways that make us all smart! What a talented bunch of 5 and 6 year olds we have.

On Tuesday afternoon we enjoyed the cooling breeze at forest school and had a wonderful time exploring the forest in the shade with our friends. Next Tuesday, we are looking forward to moving up afternoon and finding out all about life in Year 2, we can’t wait.

We have also been working on a top secret surprise for Sunday - keep your eyes peeled.

This week we have continued our journey through China where we have been learning about the Willow Pattern Story, a traditional Chinese tale.

The story is depicted on the famous blue and white plates and tells the plight of Chang and Koong-Se. The children have enjoyed retelling the story and creating their own willow pattern plates. This week we have also been finding out about the Terracotta Soldiers and the story behind them. The children have then been making their own miniature soldiers out of clay!

In Maths we have begun our times tables challenge and the children are continuing to learn multiplication and division facts for this!

At Forest School this week we prepared and cooked vegetable fried rice and used chop sticks to eat it with! We also tasted prawn crackers and thought our little Chinese feast was delicious! Just before we headed back to school, we had a water fight where we had so much fun cooling off!

Next week we will be exploring some other countries of the children’s choice! We also have Move Up Afternoon and Sports Day to look forward to. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine!

Year3

What a fantastic week it has been in Year 3!

We have been learning all about Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, expanding our knowledge of their roles, importance, and family connections to one another. We began by learning about the legend of Isis and Osiris and had great fun re-enacting the tale. Once familiar with the story, we re-wrote it, focussing on applying exciting vocabulary and using time connectives to write in exciting, wellstructured paragraphs. After that, we progressed to learning about the other famous Gods and Goddesses, creating a ‘vocAPPulary’ of information about them all.

Excitingly, we started our art canopic jar project and have had a great time moulding and sculpting the heads to our jars. We hope to finish these next week!

Last week, we started a science experiment, looking about preservation techniques for the process of mummification.

This week, we chose our favourite solution and had a go at mummifying apples. We will observe them over the next few weeks to record any changes.

Finally, how can we forget our amazing trip to London! We had an incredible day getting the train with our friends to the capital. We tied in our learning about London and Ancient Egypt with a wonderful visit to the History Museum, the theatre and finishing off with a scrumptious dinner.

The children were impeccably behaved, and we all had a truly super day. A big thank you particularly to Mrs Clarke and Ms Collins for organising and for making our final trip of Year 3 such a special one.

Wishing you all a relaxing weekend in the sunshine!
