A Classic!
2020 It’s A Wonderful Life: Live in Chicago! George Bailey – the Everyman from small town Bedford Falls whose dreams of escape and adventure were stopped by family obligation and civic duty – has fallen on desperate times. Only a miracle can save him from despair. Filled with original music and classic holiday carols, this warm “holiday favorite makes the bell rings every time,” says the Chicago Tribune. For over 19 years, American Blues has treated audiences to a live retelling of the Frank Capra classic in a 1940s radio broadcast tradition, making "It’s a Wonderful Life: Live in Chicago!" the second longest-running holiday play in Chicago! Wed 7 p.m.; Thurs 7 p.m.; Fri 7 p.m. (except Dec 25 & Jan 1) Saturdays 4 & 7 p.m.; Sun 3 p.m. through Jan. 2, 2021. Tickets start at $45 at americanbluestheater.com

The Year in Revi January Taste for the Homeless
StreetWise participated in “Taste for the Homeless,” an event created by Michael Airhart, one of the 20 Most Inspiring Chicagoan honorees in 2019. It featured entertainment, food, clothing giveaways, opportunities to speak with social workers, and resources to apply for jobs, all in an exciting party atmosphere, that most people who are experiencing homelessness don’t get to experience very often.
Cooking Demo
Heartland Health Centers stopped by the StreetWise offices to share quick and easy tips to stay healthy on a budget. Vendors even got to partake in a cooking demo, making a lovely (and healthy) pumpkin mousse.
North American Network of Street Papers
The International Network of Street Papers (INSP) officially launched North American Network of Street Papers (NANSP), to build relations and support for street papers specifically on our continent. StreetWise has been very proud to contribute to the initiative, as our network steadily grows. Follow them at facebook.com/INSPNorthAmerica
NBA All Star Game celebration/Notre Take Over
StreetWise was grateful to feature the work of local artist, Cody Hudson, who collaborated with Nike's Jordan Brand to create a capsule collection for the 8x8 - Unite project. The aim of the project is to celebrate the return of the NBA All Star game to Chicago, by having 8 local artists create art work representing the 8 different CTA train lines. Hudson's work for the project launched exclusively at Notre (118 N. Peoria St.). Notre hosted a party on January 24 to preview the launch of the collection, as well as to preview the January 27 issue of StreetWise! The party also featured a limited print by Hudson, with proceeds from its sales being donated directly to StreetWise.
February #TheCOOLParty
The StreetWise Auxiliary Board kicked off our first fundraiser of the year with the annual #TheCOOLParty benefit. The event was hosted at the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (4046 W. Armitage Ave.) The night was filled with music by My Boy Elroy, Chicago Traffic Jam, and StreetWise Vendor Lindsey Slator. Multiple artists donated their work to sell, with all proceeds benefiting StreetWise.
Oscars & #VendorWeek
StreetWise celebrated #VendorWeek (February 3 - 9) with our annual Oscars edition. StreetWise vendors and friends were treated to screenings of Academy-nominated films, and got to weigh in on the buzz just ahead of the 92nd Academy Award ceremony. Many of our vendors accurately predicted who would be taking home trophies. The majority of vendors predicted a Best Actress win for Renée Zellweger ("Judy") and all of our vendors believed Joaquin Phoenix ("Joker") would take home Best Actor. Our vendors chose "Parasite" as the most loved film, but 3 vendors believed it would not take top prize because it is in a foreign language: so happy to be proven wrong!
Law @ the Margins
StreetWise collaborated with Law @ the Margins “The Right to a Home” series, with a piece about food justice in Chicago, written by Alexandria Jacobson, assisted by vendor Lee A. Holmes. Holmes and Editor-in-Chief Suzanne Hanney later collaborated on a story about veteran homelessness.
iew at StreetWise 2020 was a year unlike any other. As Chicagoans, we have had to adapt to trials that have never before been faced. While the year was rife with tragedy, we would be remiss not to acknowledge the blessings we have received. It has reminded us of the importance of community. With courage and strength, we will get through this, together.

March StreetWise merges with the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago
StreetWise and the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago merged! By leveraging our collective resources, we are able to provide more opportunities for our vendors and job seekers and to have access to additional resources for growth. We are also able to focus more on innovation and new social enterprises that increase low barrier opportunities to employment. As a trailblazer in social enterprise and micro-entrepreneurship, StreetWise had been searching for an innovative, collaborative partner to re-imagine solutions for stabilizing the lives of at-risk individuals through expanded employment and supportive services. We have found that partner in the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago. This is such an exciting time for StreetWise as we launch a new chapter in our evolution.
Travel Issue & Lockdown
For those who may not know, StreetWise Magazine operates on a 2-week production schedule, meaning we sent our March 16 edition to the printer one week prior, with another week in production, and could not foresee the trials the world is facing due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Our always entertaining and beautiful Travel edition (which highlights vendors from around the world and their favorite spots to visit in their hometowns) was released on the first day of shelterin-place. Looks like no one is going anywhere! As we navigated the quarantine, we decided not to publish a March 23 edition, to encourage vendors to shelter-in-place. As a result of the lockdown, StreetWise began publishing digital editions on April 6, offering single issues and subscriptions, with sales still benefiting vendors. The digital version of StreetWise is now a permanent part of our production schedule, and subscriptions are available at www.streetwise.org/subscribe, but please always support your local vendor when you can!
I’M STILL HERE
StreetWise launched the I’M STILL HERE campaign to raise funds for StreetWise Vendors and to enable StreetWise to continue to provide essential services, food, masks, and hygiene kits to our vendors. The campaign kicked off with a news story by ABC7. Flyers were created for vendors, who posted them at their selling spots to remind customers that they are, in fact, still here, with information on how to support the vendor and how to subscribe digitally. Funds raised from the campaign also allowed us to provide stipends for vendors while print production was halted.
April We Moved!
The move from Uptown to the South Loop had been in the works for almost a year. After surveying vendors and prospective program participants, it became clear that a location more accessible to the South and West Sides would ease transportation and commuting barriers and open up StreetWise as an option for more people. Thanks to Deana Haynes, Deanna Becker and Brian Mays of JLL, StreetWise found the perfect new home at 2009 S. State St. Thanks go to our new landlords from Windy City RE and our architect Geri Kelley of MKB Architects. The design, construction, and feel of the space represents the dignity and respect that all of our vendors and job seekers deserve. The new headquarters is a walk-up storefront where vendors can purchase their magazines. It features an open layout common area with a brand new kitchen for our food and nutrition program, plenty of storage for our coats, blankets, hygiene supplies, and other donations, and of course, plenty of room for our hardworking staff who empower people to work each day.
Providing Food & World Central Kitchen
We had so many amazing partners to provide to-go meals and pantry items throughout the entire year. From weekly chicken/ribs from Carsons, to Gate Gourmet, Southwest Airlines, and so many families. We also began an AMAZING partnership with Kristi Katz and her team at World Central Kitchen. Local area restaurants deliver meals to StreetWise to be distributed to those in need at our offices at 2009 S. State St. Some restaurant partners include The Fat Shallot, Gibsons, ROOH, Lightly Toasted, Swift & Sons, Manny’s Deli, DineAmic Hospitality, and more, who have donated nutritious meals to make sure our vendors are full and healthy. This partnership truly made lockdown more bearable for many vendors by having access to delicious and nutritious food. Since this partnership began, WCK has delivered 11,500 meals.
In Memorium: Oscar Russell
Oscar Russell was a long-time vendor who worked with StreetWise for over 20 years. He sold his magazines at the Barnes & Noble on Webster Avenue and Clybourn Street and at the Starbucks on Wrightwood and Racine Avenues. A friend of his, Murry Mills, lived with Oscar for a couple of years and described him as a goodhearted guy who always treated him with love and respect. Mills was introduced to StreetWise through Oscar and was taught all the tips and tricks of selling magazines. Because of Oscar, Murry was able to meet the people at StreetWise whom he now considers as family. StreetWise will remember you and all your hard work, Oscar.
May White Glove Sanitation Chemicals
White Glove Sanitation Chemicals stopped by with 50 gallons of hand sanitizer for us to distribute to our vendors, job seekers and Chicago's Homeless! Owner Roger Dickens held a press conference in front of our new location and ABC7 Chicago attended.
Pope Francis
In a personal message to the street paper network – expressing his solidarity with its journalists, its frontline staff, its volunteers and its vendors – Pope Francis hailed the work being done by street papers to help “the vulnerable and invisible” in the trying circumstances created by COVID-19, providing hope and courage to press forward. StreetWise Vendor Russell Adams reacted to the Pope's words of encouragement, saying, "Wow, that's awesome coming from the Pope! I really feel blessed we will bounce back. This made my day! Take care everyone."
Chicago Tribune
StreetWise was featured in a story by Darcel Rockett in the Chicago Tribune. The article highlighted the struggles of StreetWise Vendors during the pandemic, and put emphasis on our “I’M STILL HERE” campaign. Read the article at https://bit.ly/2VZbhEo
Census Outreach
In partnership with the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, StreetWise received a grant to provide stipends to vendors and job seekers to conduct street outreach with homeless individuals throughout the city. This partnership gave vendors a chance to get back to work, perform important civic engagement work, and earn a living. Vendor A. Allen appeared on Telemundo Chicago on May 27 to talk about how StreetWise vendors were still empowered to work, by encouraging Census participation in hard-to-count communities they frequent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"You all are my StreetWise family. StreetWise always makes me feel so welcome, and I really appreciate the concern and the help that you all give me. Thank you so much for everything!"
Alexandria Banks, StreetWise Vendor

June Pride Month
StreetWise was bursting with pride this year, so much so that our annual Pride edition (only available digitally) featured an animated cover featuring 4 icons of queer representation, and interviews with them all! Vocalist Adam Lambert, pop duo Tegan & Sara, drag entertainer Jinx Monsoon, and filmmaker John Waters were included.
Chicago Needs Indie Media Live Stream Chicago Reader publisher & Windy City Times owner Tracy Baim and CIMA Partnerships Coordinator Yazmin Dominguez discussed why independent, local media is essential to a fair media landscape in Chicago with Chicago Public Square's Charlie Meyerson, StreetWise's Dave Hamilton, Third Coast Review's Nancy Bishop, Inside Publications' Ron Roenigk and North Lawndale Community News's Isaac Lewis, Jr. COVID-19 is a devastating blow to the finances of businesses and organizations all across the nation, with small local publications being one of the hardest sectors hit. The #SaveChicagoMedia fundraiser helped keep local reporters on the ground covering your communities.
Anguish & Action Free Digital Edition
The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and other African Americans and people of color, as well as the ensuing protests, shone a spotlight on the systemic racial injustices that have plagued our community and country. We are sad, angry and frustrated by the racism, discrimination and marginalization that affect communities of color. This includes many of the StreetWise vendors and job seekers who are more likely to experience homelessness, incarceration, and violence. Because of this, we provided a digital copy of our special double-size issue highlighting 8 Chicago #BlackLivesMatter protests in photos by Kathleen Hinkel FREE of charge! Please read and share this touching issue with your fellow Chicagoans and the rest of the world. You can still read it for FREE at https://issuu.com/streetwise_chi/docs/june8_2020issuu

July StreetWise is back in print!
Since April, StreetWise editions went 100% digital for the safety of our vendors. We finally returned to print with our cover story featuring “You Are Beautiful” artwork by Matthew Hoffman, which was previously only available in digital form.
August Black-Owned Businesses
StreetWise published a two-edition series highlighting Blackowned business in Chicagoland, “Part 1: Restaurants” and “Part 2: Service & Retail.” Both featured business listings, descriptions, and interviews with owners.
28th Anniversary!
Because of COVID-19, we couldn’t celebrate with a big party as usual, but StreetWise’s 28th anniversary didn’t go unnoticed, with digital birthday greetings shared from our vendors online.
"My name is Danny Davis. I would like to let you guys know that I appreciate all the money that you have given to us at StreetWise. I never thought in a million years that all these donations would come to us like this. I've been working with StreetWise for almost 22 years. I've come a long way. I appreciate everything that you've done, like making sure we have good food to take with us and money in our pockets. You're making sure that we can make it to the next day, next week, or the next month. The money that you've given us has helped a whole lot, especially for me."
Danny Davis, StreetWise Vendor
In Memorium: Lawrence Anthony
With a heavy heart, StreetWise announced the passing of Vendor Lawrence Anthony. He was a standout vendor, always willing to help. Lawrence participated in our special projects, asked the right questions, and frequently contributed to the magazine. He was best known for selling StreetWise across from the Federal Building, in front of Intelligentsia Coffee. He was just at StreetWise the week prior buying papers - thrilled to be back out to give his business a jumpstart. He will be missed.
