COVER STORY

In this issue we cover a wide range of inspiring and education based stories. We celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 and met Yassmin Abdel-Magied, who addressed an Inspiring Leaders breakfast at Ipswich Girls Grammar School, she shares her inspirational story as a migrant muslim woman living in Australia, and how she doesn’t let stereotypes define her. I was excited to speak with the creators of ‘Project Wild thing’ at Studio 188. Filmmaker David Bond addressed the importance of getting kids back outside and into nature, thereby decreasing the amount of ‘screen time’ they are exposed to. Nature Play Qld, as part of ‘the Wild Network’ provided some amazing ideas and activities to do with the kids outside. This worked really well alongside our healthy eating tips straight from Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food. I also visited the Baby and Toddler convention in Brisbane where I met Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Shelley Craft. Shelley has formed a children’s entertainment band with surfing legend and musician Beau Young. We have a copy of their new CD to giveaway, check out the full interview on page 18. As always, thank you for your support and I’d like to invite you over to our instagram page where you can follow us on our behind the scenes adventures and enter awesome giveaways!

YASSMIN BREAKS DOWN BORDERS “Never let society’s expectations limit what you do,” Yassmin Abdel-Magied. At just 25 years of age Yassmin Abdel-Magied has achieved so much and made a huge impact on our world, including being named the 2015 Queensland Young Australian of the year, but she is perhaps best known as the founder of ‘Youth Without Borders’, set up at age 16 when most teenagers aren’t thinking globally. Yasmin and her team recognised the need to empower young people to work together on projects and make a difference in their own lives. Yassmin is passionate about helping people achieve their full potential and enabling them to work for the needs of others. “I love adventure, everything I do is for the love of adventure; whether that’s learning a new language, writing a book or starting an organisation,” Yassmin said. Born in Sudan but raised in Australia, this Muslim woman is breaking down barriers and stereotypes every day. In her book ‘Yassmins Story – Who Do You Think I Am?’ Yassmin

describes how she got where she is today and her hopes for the world. Yassmin says it was one of the hardest things she’s ever done because of how honest she had to be. She wanted people to hear her story, mainly because “most people I spoke to had never heard the personal story from a young migrant Muslim girl before.” With constant media attention surrounding the Muslim religion and culture she felt she had to speak up. But Yassmin is more than a face for the Muslim community though; she is an advocate for migrants, women breaking gender stereotypes and empowering young people. Among her many skills and talents she has a degree in mechanical engineering and works on an oil rig, which is a very male dominated role. “It can be mentally lonely but I enjoy my work and the people around you become your working family,” Yassmin said. Yassmin’s book is available in bookstores now.

IPSWICH’S PARTNER IN INNOVATION Ipswich’s new Entrepreneurial Hub, codenamed Fire Station 101 because it is housed in a renovated Ipswich Fire Station on Limestone Street, has a global-level partner in Accenture, contracted by Ipswich City Council to help develop the space, then prepare strategies for its operation going forward. Innovation hub launched in Ipswich fire station A traditional welcoming ceremony by aboriginal people involving the burning of a grass tree, song and dance officially opened Firestation 101 innovative hub - an unusual occurrence inside a fire station! Entrepreneur Steve Baxter joined Mayor Paul Pisasale, members of the Ipswich City Council and the foundation members of the new hub to celebrate the start of the high tech centre - and excitement was in the air. Manager Chad Renando said the purpose and function of FS101 was community based. “It’s a place where you can come and build your idea through digital technology and online platforms. “It will be an inspiring workplace where entrepreneurs can work alongside each other, share advice and learn from one another. The hub is owned by Ipswich City Developments and operated by Ipswich City Enterprises. Mayor Pisasale said that Ipswich is one of the fastest growing cities in Queensland and the innovative hub is making the future even brighter for Ipswich and leading the way digitally. Photo: Mayor Paul Pisasale, with a coffee cup ‘printed’ on a 3D printer, and Chad Renando rang the FS101 Celebration Bell .

Digital Lead, David Maunsell said the strategies will focus on how different organisations can come together to take advantage of the tech space, the ideas and the collaboration to produce something special – hopefully, innovation. “It’s important to lay the foundation for future growth, how this hub can become the catalyst for creating the next wave of value for the people of Ipswich. “We think places like Fire Station 101 will become more and more important as communities figure out what they are going to be next, with digital technology,” he said. “We are living through a period of remarkable change, and innovation hubs will enable communities to build digital bridges between like-minded communities.” The all-important employment growth potential is a prime focus for a connected city. “Our kids are heading into a future in which seventy per cent of the jobs haven’t been invented yet, and entrepreneurial hubs help us to figure out what we want our kids to do in this not-yet-known future workforce,” David said. “These people could conceivably have ten careers in their lifetime. Wow, that could be fantastic! “Hubs like this can be really important in enabling and preparing some businesses now, and when we get some kids in here in the future, enabling them to create Ipswich’s future, create

Australia’s future, maybe even play a part in a global future as well.” David says that FS101 is starting out from a solid base. “I’ve been in lots of places that have been established to turn some insanely good ideas into innovation, where ultimately there will be markets, and this is as good as any I have seen,” he said. “I think the value is in the calibre of people that cross-fertilise each

other’s ideas here. That’s where the magic will happen. “The space is a connected venue, but it’s going to be the people Ipswich attracts here who are really into exploring ‘what if’ - what if we did it like this. That is the exciting prospect, and the members here already are open to exchanging good ideas, so that’s a good start.” Photo: Georgia Hewett tries out a virtual reality system.

‘SHARK’ STEVE BAXTER SAYS “GET INVOLVED IPSWICH” Best known as one of the ‘Sharks’ on the ‘Shark Tank’ television programme, Tech entrepreneur Steve Baxter believes passionately in the need for communities to get involved in technology hubs such as Fire Station 101. Steve Baxter, knows a thing or two about startup businesses in the technology sphere, and he shared his views at the launch of Ipswich’s own entrepreneurial hub, Fire Station 101. He said innovation needs to come from small, nimble businesses, the startups, that their task is to take business from the big enterprises, thereby forcing them to innovate. “It requires community support, people to come down here with the right attitude of ‘paying it forward’, not trying to take advantage of startup businesses with no money,” he said. “There needs to be a longer term attitude, offering massive discounts for services, or simply offering mentoring, which may be as simple as kicking around ideas about, say, how to structure the business or conduct operations.”

The amazing benefits of group travel

Steve says that Ipswich City Properties owning the FS101 building has significant advantages, as resident startups do not face massive rent bills but there are challenges ahead. “Getting going is one thing but sustaining it over the longer term in an outer metropolitan area will be tough, but it has to happen,” Steve said. “We are 20 years behind places in the United States and 15 to 18 years behind Israel, so if you don’t have 15 years of endurance then, probably, don’t start.” Steve believes the payoff will be for our kids and grandkids more than anyone else.

STEAMING AHEAD AT WESTSIDE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE As the Science and Engineering Challenge Team from Westside Christian College walked into the hall at The University of Queensland, little did they know they would make history. By day’s end, the team had not only won the Brisbane round of the competition but had recorded one of the highest scores in the history of the competition. Building a Hovercraft with Styrofoam, balsa, plastic and tape was no issue for this team. Solving problems creatively, working as a team and thinking outside the square - a piece of cake. But this team of 30 did not merely walk in that day and magically know how to problem-solve; the learning started back in their primary years and was steadily built upon through dedication and hard work. And students at Westside Christian College are STEAMing ahead. The acronym STEAM, represents Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and these are the foundation areas for 21st century learning. Students at Westside Christian College begin their learning with a firm foundation of English (while not part of the acronym, the subject which underpins all

learning), Mathematics and Science. Students in grades P – 3 start with the basics and are taught to think, explore and create. Mrs Rechelle Edwards, Head of Junior Primary is passionate about learning in these formative years. She comments, ‘A broad curriculum including creative and physical endeavours inspire students to develop a positive approach to learning.’ Students take this positive approach through to Senior Primary, building upon this knowledge and further exploring Literacy and examining the multitude of concepts underpinning STEAM through both traditional and digital means. All students bring their own iPad to College and use this tool to enhance their learning while exploring the world around them through digital means. This ensures their interest in learning is piqued, providing a sure foundation for the High School years to come. While the teenage years may be rocky, dedicated teachers encourage and develop the

earlier-ignited passion for learning. ‘Our main business is teaching and learning; we have experienced, creative and highly-motivated teachers who go above and beyond simply teaching students how to light a bunsen burner or play a piece of music’, states Head of Secondary, Mr Joshua Mansfield. He continues, ‘Teachers encourage students to question, experiment, create and discover. There is nothing better than seeing students gain satisfaction from their learning.’ Yet life and learning needs beauty and the Arts

are a strong part of Westside Christian College. Opportunities start early with all aspects of the Creative Arts being integrated as part of the curriculum, with additional opportunities college-wide for those students passionate about the Arts. And while lesson content is essential, it is the processes taught through the Arts – collaboration, divergent thinking, creative processes – which are essential in creative twenty-first century learners and workers. Head of Creative Arts, Mr Christopher Hollier explains ‘Across all Arts disciplines, people are engaged

creatively which unlocks out-of-the-box thinking while still operating on a foundation of procedural, skill-based learning. Without the Arts and creative education, students cannot reach their highest potential.’ If you are interested in finding out more about the educational opportunities available at Westside Christian College, visit our website or come and see us in person at one of our Open Days to be held 2 June, 3 August or 13 October or our Open Night 6 May 2016.

TAP’D TIM RULE | PA HOTEL The Prince Alfred Hotel’s newest bar, Tap’d, has a whopping 72 different products on tap. Among those 72 taps are four taps that they call their ‘Feature Four’. These Feature Four showcase four products from one particular brewery and will change regularly. The current Feature Four come from Murrays Craft Brewing Co in Port Stephens, New South Wales. Murray and the team have been brewing unique and off-beat naturally crafted beers since 2006, and in the process have won a bunch of awards and accolades – including ‘Australia’s Brewer of the Year’ last year. The first feature beer this month the Murray’s Whale Ale – a refreshing wheat beer with a twist. Whale Ale’s high percentage of malted and unmalted wheat and aromatic late hop profile gives a unique take on a session strength ale. A classic light body, creamy mouthfeel and refreshing citris flavour. This is balanced with assertive late hopping, giving a fresh, light tropical fruit aroma

and cleansing dry finish. Murray’s Whale Ale is light gold in colour and lightly filtered to give it a sparkling appearance. Murray’s Angry Man Pale Ale, a classic US style pale ale is out next feature beer. Australian, English and German malts balance the huge citrus/pine hop aroma. Strongly influenced by generous use of US Centennial and NZ Motueka hops. Angry Man has a full-bodied finish and complex character. This is well balanced with biscuity/ toffee flavours from selected caramalts. Next in out Feature Four is Murray’s FRED IPA. At first glance, you might think only his mum could love him. But once you try FRED IPA, we reckon you’ll fall under his spell. FRED is aggressively late hopped with a house blend of hops from the US Pacific Northwest. It has the classic US IPA hop aroma and

flavour of big citrus, tropical fruit and pine notes throughout. An assertive bitterness is balanced by the sweetness of the pale, crystal and wheat malt additions. A beautiful hopped up brew to be enjoyed with smoky and spicy food. Murray’s AppleShack Cider rounds out our Feature Four. AppleShack is Murray’s first ever cider with the first back released within the last couple of months. Light bodied, clear, crisp and moderately sweet. A new world cider brewed at Bobs Farm. So moreish and thirst quenching, this cider is perfect on a warm summer’s day. Thirsty yet? These four beers and ciders are pouring right now at Tap’d. Keep an eye out on Tap’d’s Facebook page for upcoming beers, newly tapped beers and all the news on upcoming events and promotions. Cheers, Tim

PUT DOWN THE iPADS AND GO OUTSIDE! UK Filmmaker David Bond who has the unusual job title of ‘Nature Marketing Director’ wants to sell our kids on nature. “It’s fun, free and good for you, and there aren’t many things you can say that about!” David beams. Founder of ‘Project Wild Thing’, which kick-started ‘The Wild Network’, is an organisation urging children and families to get back to nature. David is worried about the huge rise in ‘screen time’, leading to an abandonment of nature. He sees huge problems associated with this preoccupation with gaming and other app-based pursuits. “Side effects include poor child health and physical development, the onset of depression and obesity due to lack of engagement and physical exercise, ultimately a wasted childhood,” David said. Appearing at Studio 188 in Ipswich recently David talked about the four main reasons kids aren’t going outside and why they

are losing connection with nature. Fear. People seem afraid to let their children play or be outside, because of factors such as stranger danger, traffic accidents, and generally a risk-averse approach. Time. People are busier than ever and ‘wild time’ gets squeezed out of busy lives and schedules. Space. Rapidly vanishing green space, with property development.

Technology. A huge rise associated with long periods of ‘screen time’. Kids are glued to computer games, iPads, television, and are submerged in a completely virtual world online. Nature Play Qld, as part of the Wild Network, are doing some great work right here in Ipswich and all over Queensland in getting children back outside. They have some great tools on how to get

started including fun activity checklists and their ‘Passport to an Amazing Childhood’ initiative. Kids are provided with missions and they get stickers when they complete them. The aim is to fill uptheir passport. There’s also a ‘Reviving Neighbourhood Play’ project, and they are working towards getting communities to know their neighbours. In a world where technology is taking over our everyday lives, we need to take a step back and just appreciate our planet, make the time to take our kids outside and get involved in playtime and healthy physical activities. It is our responsibility to give our children that connection with our world for their own health and for the future of our planet. As David says, “If we don’t give our children that connection with our planet and nature, no one will care enough to save it.” Visit natureplay.org.au and print off a fun checklist and watch the full movie ‘Project Wild Thing ‘ and get inspired! HEALTHY EATING STARTS AT HOME Better, nutritious food prepared at home is the main message that Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food centres wish to convey. The team at Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food in Ipswich want people to know that steering clear of takeaways and convenience foods doesn’t have to be difficult. With basic cooking skills and knowledge anyone can create amazing healthy meals cooked from scratch and at an affordable cost. The Ministry of Food came to Ipswich because there was a recognised need in the community along with high rates of diet related disease in the region. With support from Ipswich City Council and the Queensland Government, along with local food supplier Woolworths, the centre has been successful. The seven-week cooking courses teach basic cooking skills and simple recipes to make at home. In a fun, learning environment, the trainees cook along with the chefs and take home everything made on the day. The chefs believe that having the tools and exposure to these life skills promotes behavioural changes to get people well on the way to a healthier lifestyle. Cooking classes are 90 minutes in length and are once a week over a course of seven. Cost is $140, or with a concession card $70. Check out the class times and book online at www.jamieoliver. com/jamies-ministry-of-foodaustralia/ipswich.php Easy tips for changing eating habits and improving health outcomes include the following basic suggestions:

Cook meals from scratch using fresh ingredients. Packaged or pre-prepared meals can hide loads of sugar, salt and preservatives. Cooking for yourself avoids consuming too many additives. Eat more veggies. Make it your mission to eat five serves of vegetables a day. They are packed

with vitamins, minerals and fibre and are really good for you. Use your freezer. Cook large batches of food and place portion sizes in the freezer so that simple nutritious meals are just moments away next time you’re on the run. It’s also more economical on the household budget.

Five grains a day. Ideally, everyone should have five serves of grains each day. One portion is: 1 slice of wholegrain bread or 1 cup cooked rice or pasta. Eat more eggs. Eggs are part of a balanced diet. Eggs are one of nature’s great food parcels, they are high in protein and low in calories and very affordable. Eat breakfast. Breakfast sets us up for the rest of the day and can be quick and easy. Try an egg, a piece of whole wheat toast and a piece of fruit or some granola, fruit and yoghurt or a fruit smoothie can be great or baked beans on whole wheat toast. Eat lean cuts of meat. Trim meat of all visible fat, and instead of frying, choose healthier cooking methods such as grilling, roasting and barbecuing. Cut back on treats. Sweet things are often high in sugar and fat and can contain a lot of kilojoules and not a lot of nutrients. These should only be eaten in moderation and as a treat. Choose fruit or fruit based desserts over cakes, biscuits and chocolate. Buy the whole chook. Buy a good-quality whole chicken, then joint it as a way of making your money go further. Or keep it whole and roast it using the left overs for another meal and bones for homemade stock. Prepare a balanced plate. A well balanced meal is made up of one third carbohydrates, one third fruit and vegetables and one third dairy, protein and fat.

Choose your Camellias for autumn Camellias are beautiful flowering plants that have been around for hundreds of years, and would have been a definite feature in grandmother’s garden! They are a hardy plant that can withstand hot and cold temperatures, great for Autumn and start flowering around March/April. There are two types of Camellias, the full sun Sasanqua and the part shade Japonicas. First to flower in Autumn are the Sasanqua, with colours from white through to dark red. Japonicas flower mid-

Winter to early spring and when nurtured properly from shrubs, by maintaining well drained soil and fertilisation, they are long lasting, coming back year after year with beautiful blooms. New in stock are the Queensland Waratah trees, with glossy green foliage and masses of bright red flower clusters produced in Spring and Summer. This is an Australian beauty and a bird attracting tree. North Tivoli Nursery also has a range of Earthlife garden soil conditioners, great to help put the minerals back into your soil. HOME & GARDEN

WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK The team at Furniture Court & Beds R Us are serious about their professional service and advice. When selling a product they want to be completely educated on how it will benefit their customers. As part of this education process the sales team recently toured the Sleepyhead and Dunlop Foams factories, to see the production processes in making the incredible range of Australian made mattresses, from start to finish. Owner/Manager David Holdorf said Sleepyhead mattresses are made in Brisbane. “Sleepyhead has operated in Australasia for more than 80 years, they pride themselves in offering quality and longevity in their product,” David said. “This gives our staff so much confidence in selling the Sleepyhead mattresses, having seen firsthand the amount of quality control and product testing carried out throughout the entire manufacturing process. He said that the Sleepyhead difference is that their pocket springs are manufactured in their Brisbane factory from the highest quality Australian Made Steel. “A pocket spring mattress creates the perfect spring system for limiting movement and partner disturbance in a mattress, so that’s important,” David said. The final stage of manufacturing a mattress is adding the various foam comfort layers to create the unique feel catering for everyone’s personal preference. The foam plant, Dunlop Foams is owned by Sleepyhead, which means they can ensure they are getting quality foam created specifically for each type of mattress.

“Revolutionary products like Graphene and Fusion Gel are being created specifically for the bedding industry to help create the perfect night’s sleep,” David said. After visiting the factories, staff members at Ipswich Furniture Court and Beds R Us are 100 per cent confident they can offer customers expert knowledge on their mattresses, and

that every customer finds the right product for their needs. Furniture Court pride themselves on always looking after their customers’ best interests, matching their needs with the best option for their lifestyle and situation. EDUCATION

ALTITUDE+ AT TSAC

In this issue we focus on education, in this feature and in other articles. Children are the future, which is why we care so deeply about their education. When we think of education, our first thought goes to which school is best and how that school can help the individual learn and grow. In our education feature we profile some of our leading schools in the Ipswich region and what they have to offer in educating children. Every child is different and it’s important that parents are aware of all the options available so that the school chosen will best fit the needs of each child, the family, budget and all the other factors that come into play. In Ipswich and the surrounding areas there are some great schools to choose from to meet the needs of every child’s educational future. Although schooling is one of the most important aspects of

each child’s future, education starts at home. With the help of Project Wild Thing and Nature Play Qld, we have put forward some ‘food for thought’ on how the preoccupation with constant screen time can have negative effects on their wellbeing and, in turn, their ability to learn. The UK-based filmmakers and Nature Play Qld have made it their mission to get kids to put down laptops, iPads and phones and get outside and back to nature. There’s also some really helpful tips with the help of Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food Ipswich on how to educate your family about healthy eating and incorporating it into your daily lives and cooking routine.

In 2017, The Springfield Anglican College will introduce a very exciting initiative, building upon the excellent enrichment and extension programmes already in existence from Year 4 onwards. Students who apply for, and are accepted into the Year 7 Altitude+ programme will be able to participate in the stimulating and challenging enrichment programme that will run through until the end of Year 10. During the programme, students will accelerate through the core curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Languages, while engaged in an independent research-based subject known as Future Studies. Future Studies is a unique multidisciplinary curriculum study that extends beyond the Australian Curriculum. Each term, students will address a local or global issue by developing and implementing an investigative approach in the areas of information technology, social justice, philosophy and psychology. The programme aims to develop students’ ability to create, anticipate and manage change in an ever transforming and

diverse society, as well as develop their teamwork skills, emotional intelligence, resilience and ability to solve complex problems. In essence, the programme aims to help develop the higher order thinking skills that will be highly beneficial beyond the programme, and as students further their learning in Years 11 and 12, and beyond. The programme is designed to ensure the members remain part of the College community. At various stages throughout each week, these students will join with their peers in study, in the Creative Arts, in sport, and in socialising. The programme will be open to both current TSAC students as well as students wishing to enroll at the College. In 2017, it is proposed that the programme will be capped at 20 students. A rigorous entrance examination, evidence of prior learning and an interview will form the basis of selection. IPSWICH GRAMMAR SCHOOL IT ALL STARTS HERE...

With over 150 years of experience in teaching boys at Ipswich Grammar School, we understand what makes them tick. Over this time, we have developed and implemented innovative approaches to address the specific needs of boys as students. Boys learn by doing. They are active learners. They need to be heard. They learn at their own pace and they are funny, creative, risktaking and bursting with energy. We inspire, engage and challenge our students, giving them a solid educational foundation so they leave here ready for the challenges of the world ahead of them. We focus entirely on the unique needs of boys and celebrate their strengths and abilities. Knowing boys means we teach them the way they learn best. We set high expectations and they respond with high achievement. We value every boy’s individuality and they learn to value each other. We see their leadership potential and they step up to become leaders. We enjoy boys’ humour and enthusiasm. We keep boys active with learning, sports and the arts.

We nurture their minds, challenge their bodies and motivate their spirits. We watch them grow with pride. We are committed to helping all our boys develop into men who are competent, confident and compassionate. We see their moral and values development as important as their grades. The boys at Ipswich Grammar learn to be independent yet interconnected. Their intellectual pursuits are encouraged alongside a dedication to their all-round development. We support their striving for excellence as we nourish their understanding of wider social responsibilities and community engagement. We are committed to boys’ education because we know it offers many advantages for boys. That is why we are here.

Every day is stimulating, unique and exciting. We tap into boys’ sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them. We encourage the boys to be self-motivated, to strive to do their best in everything they do and to have the confidence to take risks. We provide them with the tools to be able to express themselves clearly and to share their ideas. To be creative, innovative and enterprising thinkers. To know how to gather and analyse information and make informed decisions. These are the tools they will need for tomorrow’s world. After all, our students today are among those who will be thinkers and leaders of the 21st Century. Our focus is to recognise each boy as an individual and offer him the opportunities to discover and explore his dreams, regardless of how big they are. To give every

boy the opportunity to reach his dreams, he needs to have the best start to his school life. We believe that start is here. To find out more about Ipswich Grammar, to see the school in action and judge for yourself whether your son could reach his full potential here, take a personal tour of the campus on Open Day and have the opportunity to meet with the Ipswich Grammar leadership team. MOTHERS DAY

SUPERSTAR SHELLEY AND MUSICIAN BEAU ENTERTAIN KIDS Lovable television personality and mother of two, Shelley Craft – who rose to fame on ‘Saturday Disney’, ‘The Great Outdoors’ and ‘The Block’ – can now add singer and kids entertainer to her list of talents. Joining forces with surfing champion and musician Beau Young, the talented pair recently formed the band ‘Animals Rock’. They initially met after Beau performed at Shelley’s children’s day care centre. Her two daughters, Eadie and Millia were fascinated with Beau’s animal act and wouldn’t stop talking about it to their Mum. Seeing the potential, Shelley tracked Beau down and they have been making music ever since. With a vision much bigger than touring kindergarten and day care centres, ‘Animals Rock’ now perform on big stages at big venues. They have an album in stores and even see a TV show in their future. “Education is definitely a huge focus for our music, the kids learn about animals and their habitats, also lots of the animals we sing about are endangered,” says Beau ‘Animals Rock’ is a fun and interactive, musical act, with singing from Shelley, Beau on guitar and backed by a live band, there are dance moves the kids and parents can follow along with. “It’s hard to sing and dance at the same time but the dance moves are very kid friendly,” jokes Shelley.

The main focus is having fun and using music as an interactive tool to learn about animals. Shelley’s famous smile and natural ability to entertain a crowd really pulls the whole act together. With an increasingly busy schedule, ‘Animals Rock’ is being rehearsed and performed around Shelley’s other commitments. The filming for popular TV show ‘Reno Rumble’ has just been completed and this year’s series of ‘The Block’ which starts in May. Shelley’s two daughters, aged 3 and 5, have always travelled with her on work commitments. “The girls are our biggest fans, they know the whole show off by heart of course, and they are always right up the front, singing and dancing when we perform,” Shelley said. When it comes to fitting everything into her busy life Shelley says, “I think it just comes down to drive, if you want something badly enough you’ll go out and get it. If you love what you do and are willing to work hard you can achieve great success.” ‘Animals Rock’ is available at any good music store and online at Amazon or iTunes.

YOU COULD WIN! To win, email your details (inc. daytime phone or mobile number) to win@strikepublications.com.au with the code word in the subject line. FASHION AND STYLE WITH RACHEL VICKARY, IPSWICH CITY SQUARE

KILLER BEAUTY TIPS FROM YE OLDE WO

From accidents with nuclear waste to bites from radioactive insects, most superheroes and villains have scary makeover stories but these pale into insignificance when it comes to the beauty secrets in olden ti However, for a look at some truly terrifying makeovers, we take you beyond Gotham City and all the way back to the Middle Ages, when makeovers could kill. Here at Ipswich City Square we are seriously passionate about all things beauty and fashion, and while these days we only buy our beauty products from Discount Drug Store Ipswich we thought it might be fun to take a look back in time to the very beginning of modern make-up…enjoy! MAKE-UP MOST FOUL… Hundreds of years before product testing and safety labelling became the norm, women of ye olde worlde tended to create their own cosmetics using whatever was at hand. And while some were harmless (but disgusting), like using crushed

beetles for blush and lip tint – gag! – or urine to lighten hair - double gag!! - or bird poop to lighten the skin – I just can’t even!!! - some were just downright deadly. Sulphur skin treatments anyone? In the 1500s when Elizabeth1 ascended the throne she had a cult following bigger and badder than all the Kardashians and Jenners combined. With her eyebrows plucked into submission, a delicate beetle juice blush upon the cheek and the lips and her white lead and vinegar complexion (no, really!), Elizabeth1 was considered hot stuff. Despite a notable lack of selfies or social media, the Queen still managed to be a bit of a shameless selfpromoter, planting her face on all manner of medieval merchandise, from brooches to banners.

When women saw her likeness, they were desperate to copy her every style move. So just how did the modern medieval woman stock her cosmetics bag in the days before the advent of the Bobbi Brown and MAC counter? Why, she made it of course. Here are some of the favourite beauty recipes of the day – whatever you do ladies, do not try this at home: FOUNDATION Back in the day, when only peasants and poor people (ugh!) went out into the sun and got a tan, the rich and fabulous loved a whiter-than-white complexion. And, the paler the complexion, the higher up the aristocratic food chain they clearly were. To achieve the palest, longestlasting foundation, white lead was mixed with vinegar into a paste

and applied all over the face. While it did create a really luminous white effect, it also maimed or killed many of its users, which sadly, was not enough to deter the serious cosmetic devotees. (Not a fan of the lead which turned skin grey and caused horrendous scarring? Not to worry, there was a very good recipe for an arsenic-based foundation available at the time which you could use instead.) EYE ENHANCEMENT You think liquid eye liner is difficult? How about some Belladonna eye drops to give your pupils an extra sparkle and that seductively dilated pupil look? Hot! Unfortunately for its many users, Belladonna turned out to be highly toxic and frequently caused blindness. Bummer!

Karalee Shopping Centre

The Ipswich suburb of Karalee is one of the country retreat areas close to Ipswich Central, 10km north-east and only 20km from central Brisbane. Karalee is an area of rolling hills and open spaces close to the Brisbane River, which has carved deep gorges through the elevated land areas. Bordered on the north and east by the Brisbane River, the boundary extends from near Colleges Crossing to a few kilometres short of Barellan Point. It is a residential/rural area that has experienced remarkable residential development over the past decade. A large suburb, it measures six km north to south. It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal expression describing grass near a waterhole. Karalee was officially named by the Queensland Names Board in1973. In the late 1960s Karalee’s dairy and farm holdings began to be bought up for future subdivision. Most allotments are of the rural/ residential scale (2000 sq metres or more) and house building began in the early 1970s. Land was reserved for a state primary school, and Karalee school opened in 1985 with an enrolment of 186 pupils. The area west of the school was subdivided in the 1980s, and the area bounded by the Brisbane River was cut up in the 1990s-2000s. With spectacular river views on three sides, this is an area much sought after.

Entry to Riverside Estate

Karalee has a community hall and to the north a canoe trail and the Venus Pool on the Brisbane River. Local shops are west of the school, near Mount Crosby Road. In January 2011, Karalee had minor riverside flooding along the Brisbane River east of Colleges Crossing but flooding from the Bremer River was extensive. Along with Chuwar and Barellan Point, Karalee was formerly part of the Moreton Shire before the Shire amalgamated with Ipswich City Council in 1995. Ken Grubb has recently put together a book named ‘Our Karalee and Barellan Point’ which showcases the wonderful suburb and changes over the years, such as: the opening of Karalee State School in 1985, the development of Natural Resources and Mines. the founding of Karalee Community Association, and the Karalee Games Karalee has a scout’s base, a rugby league team, a swimming club and a tennis club, and is a perfect home for those who appreciate peace and quiet and a clean and green lifestyle. It’s also a safe suburb, and great for families.

AIRWOMEN PROMOTING WOMEN IN UNIFORM International Women’s Day focused attention on gender diversity, also practised by the Australian Defence Force as it celebrates and actively promotes gender equality. Apart from the fact that it’s the right thing to do, the policy aims to increase the participation rates of women in the Defence Forces. Two accomplished airwomen at RAAF Base Amberley are playing their part, carrying out their Air Force duties but also actively encouraging other women in uniform to be the best they can be. Warrant Officer Fiona Grasby knows firsthand the life challenges facing women, through her day-today duties and during her service in Afghanistan. “Within Force Protection Unit I was responsible for managing, processing and providing security for women and children visiting or transiting through the air base at Tarin Kot,” WOFF Grasby said. “As the senior female I also assumed a role within the Female Engagement Team. Women

bring a different perspective to engagement locally; it’s really about knowing the culture and how to communicate with the local community. That’s the extra dimension that women achieve. “Trust is a big thing but you have to earn that trust, particularly in the Afghanistan environment. If you are a mother with children then you get more respect because they value that you are bringing children into the world.” Warrant Office Grasby said that Defence has come a long way in truly engaging women. “We are really doing this; we have women leaders deployed into high threat environments, our logistics women do a fantastic job, our medical staff are fabulous, and our force protection girls have been recognised by Coalition forces for their contribution to operations,” she said.

“We need to continue to grow but I think we are in a good position... we’ve learnt.” Having a female as Defence Minister, in Senator Marise Payne, has been important according to WOFF Grasby. “It brings diversity, and that’s the message we are putting forward: a diverse Defence workforce mirroring the civilian community, and it’s about inclusiveness at all levels.” Leading Aircraftwoman Tegan Bowden is no less passionate about the role of women in uniform having worked for seven years as a military dog handler within a male dominated workforce. “I yearned for a female role model and mentor during my time; I knew that if I was ever in a position professionally I would want to generate more awareness of what

women face in the Defence Forces,” LACW Bowden said. “Dominant males are just part and parcel of the culture of our mustering. It’s very physical, it’s arduous, it’s shift-work, and it can be a bit cold emotionally for a woman. But we’ve seen something of an explosion of females in the mustering in recent years, which is great to see.” Tegan believes in an increasing female presence within Defence. “I’ve found that when there’s a balanced network of males and females in a team it’s a lot more cohesive. Females integrate and we apply our own thought processes and emotion into what we do, so instead of changing things a lot we enhance team outcomes and it’s a more harmonious approach.” Having a female Defence Minister is also important to Tegan. “It’s so important, encouraging and empowering, to see that there’s no level of female influence. “If there can be a female Minister for Defence then I can be too.” Left: Military Working Dog Handler, LACW Tegan Bowden, No 95 Wing Executive Warrant Officer, Warrant Officer Fiona Grasby and Officer in Charge Air Force Improvement Team, Flight Lieutenant Shamsa Lea together at 2016 International Women’s Day Breakfast at RAAF Base Amberley. TEENAGERS WITH AVIATION AMBITIONS In a world where gender equality is still an issue in some industries, the Air Force is actively encouraging more women to join and fly fast jets. Seventeen girls aged between 16 and 23 years from all over Australia took part in a four-day flight camp at RAAF Base Amberley recently. The flight camp introduced the girls to the Air Force lifestyle, giving them experiences such as C-17 and KC-30 simulator flight training, conversations with pilots, visiting a weapons range and engaging with RAAF military working dogs. But the highlight was a flight down the coast aboard a C-130 Hercules transport plane. The girls also heard from serving airwomen who spoke at the International Women’s Day breakfast on-base about their experiences and their careers in the Military. Nikola Fry, aged 20 from Melbourne, who is studying a degree in Health Science has a background in the Army Cadets and has a love of aviation. She has been ‘gliding’ since she was 15 years old and already had

some solo experience under her belt. Nikola has dreams of being in the Air Force and wants to do humanitarian work in the future. “The training and flying experience you get in the Air Force is like nothing else in the world,” she beamed. Also at the Flight Camp was Issy who comes from Sydney where she has just finished a degree in International and Global studies. She wanted to visit the flight camp to experience all aspects of what the Air Force is about. “Military life can sometimes seem quite foreign, so I really wanted to experience what it would be like,” she said. “Also, there were a lot of activities that seemed really, really cool”. Issy particularly enjoyed the weapon shoot and loved the fact that women are completely accepted in the Air Force. “The mindset is, as long as you can do the job, gender is no issue.”

This next release will offer owners a wide selection of home sites from 600m2 to over 800m2, giving purchasers plenty of room for their new home. This release features elevated outlooks towards the mountain ranges, with the added benefit of being benched and retained. Clinton Trezise, Associate Director of Residential at Colliers International who are marketing the estate said ‚ “Honeywood offers 600m2 plus lots otherwise known as traditional urban lots, which allow buyers to build a reasonable sized home without having to compromise on a good sized back yard. Buyers are excited to be building their dream home on a large block, which allows room for a shed, for the boat or a pool to keep cool in summer, or simply enough room for the kids to run around the back yard, perfect for those growing families. The estate has a limited number of registered blocks for sale that are ready to build on now, starting from only $139,000. The larger sixed urban lots at Honeywood also come with the benefit of a great location. Fernvale is just a short 15 minutes to Ipswich, 20 minutes to the RAAF base and

45 minutes to Brisbane”, said Mr Trezise. Set in the beautiful Brisbane Valley, the Honeywood community is typified by the rural charm of its surroundings, yet has all the urban amenity you would expect in the city. It is within walking distance to shops, schools, cafes and other key amenities in Fernvale. The sense of space in and around the estate is enhanced by nice wide tree lined streets and a community park featuring a dog yard, all within walking distance of the main street. The Somerset Regional Council is currently constructing the Fernvale Sporting Precinct adjoining the local school. This precinct will include a clubhouse, netball courts, rugby league/soccer, cricket & AFL fields linked close by the rail trail, a maintained walking & hiking trial that travels by the estate. Lateral Properties has two stages of homesites currently under construction to meet demand and will be released soon. You can register your interest by visiting the Honeywood Estate Sales Centre, which is open from Saturday to Thursday, by calling 07 5427 0511 or visiting www. honeywoodfernvale.com.au
