TARA MOSS SPEAKS OUT Author, journalist, former model and UNICEF national ambassador for child survival, Tara Moss, returned to Ipswich Library recently to promote her new book, ‘Speaking Out: A 21st Century Handbook for Women and Girls’.

“Yes, I have written a handbook,” Tara said. “This book arose partly from the hundreds of questions I have been asked by women and girls in recent years. Questions like, ‘How do you find the confidence to speak out?’ ‘How do you handle trolls?’ ‘How do you form an argument?’ ‘How do you research?’

‘How do you do public speaking?’

“It was also written because of the shocking statistic that worldwide fewer than one in four people we hear from or about in the media is female, meaning that voices in public discourse are disproportionately male. Women are still massively outnumbered in parliaments, leadership positions, boardrooms and more, including in public debates that specifically relate to women’s rights and women’s bodies.

Why Speaking Out? Tara says “Our voices connect us. When we are silent or unheard our ideals and perspectives, our needs, our pain, and our struggles remain

unknown or unacknowledged; and often for this reason, unchanged.”

“In Australia we enjoy opportunities to speak out, including on digital platforms and social media, commenting on a subject in the public sphere is not always easy or simple. There are specific challenges that face many segments of the population in speaking out and being heard, or surviving the process. These include challenges relating to gender, race, sexual orientation, class, culture and disability.

“In this book I aim to examine the challenges posed by gender – specifically those facing women and girls – the external obstacles of silencing, dismissals, bullying and threats of violence, and the internal challenges of crises of confidence, and knowing just how and when to speak out.

The modern paradox is that while the world has become more receptive to the voices of women in recent decades, at the same

time it has become more violently opposed to women’s voices.

“Just what are women experiencing when they speak out? If you want to be heard, what strategies work? This book attempts to answer some of those questions, and more,” Tara said.

“As many women like myself know all too well, having an opinion as a woman online now comes with gendered abuse, almost as an expectation. Speak out against rape and murder… get rape and death threats. Speak out against inequality and have your sexual rating assessed by trolls.”

Tara’s aims in her book to give practical advice to anyone who feels trepidation about the critics – both the constructive kind and the unconstructive – and the trolls.

But another is to build confidence and knowledge through shared experience. Because by retelling our triumphs and failures, and the responses we got along the way, we get a greater sense of strength.

Supercars are coming

MOSTERT READY TO FLY IN IPSWICH With the Virgin Australia Supercars set to hit Queensland Raceway in July, Chaz Mostert is determined to make it back into the winners’ circle in the Coates Hire Ipswich Supersprint, at the track where he had his first Supercars win in 2013.

Twenty-four year old Chaz now drives the Supercheap Ford FG X Falcon for the Rod Nash Racing team, and he is looking for Pole Position for the 120 km race on Saturday and the 200km race on Sunday.

Despite being competitive since returning to racing after a horrific crash during a qualifying session for the Bathurst 1000 in 2015 Mostert hasn’t won so far this year, so he is determined to race his hardest in Ipswich.

“I’m doing really well now, with everything healed, so I’m ready for the Ipswich Supersprint,” Chaz said. “I had five months out of the car and I really missed the driving so I’m ready to go at Ipswich.”

Chaz Mostert began his racing career in 2008 at the Formula Ford championship, and in 2010 he won the event. Then in 2010 he got the chance to drive a Miles Racing Falcon at Bathurst in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series where he exceeded everyone’s expectations.

His success and obvious raw talent lead to Chaz being signed by Miles Racing for the 2011 Season. He has raced with fierce competitive spirit and aggressive driving over the past five years.

The crash in 2015 left Chaz with a broken leg, broken wrist and lots of bruises, ruling him out for the remainder of the season. At that point, he was second in the championship, behind teammate Mark Winterbottom.

Chaz came into Supercars following his boyhood dream of driving fast cars for fun and excitement. “As a boy I wanted to ride a motorbike but mum thought that was too dangerous, so she found out about Go Karting, and I loved it as soon as I started,” Chaz said.

“I did eight years of Kart racing and it just progressed from there.”

Competitive racing isn’t just getting out on the track and driving ultra-fast, although that is what’s needed, it’s the end result of a lot of preparation.

“In a typical week there’s a day in the workshop, there’s meetings, travel to the destination of the race where we go to events, do a track walk and lots of practice and development work with the team. Then on the weekend, we race.”

Supercars racing requires a lot of travelling from one end of the country to the other, and that means a lot of time away from home, friends and family.

“It can be tough, usually I’m only home for two or three days every fortnight, so I have to try and get as much family and friends time in as I can while I’m home,” Chaz said.

“Luckily, my family travel with me a lot but I don’t get to see my friends as much as I would like. At the end of the day though I’m doing a very rewarding job, I’m doing what I love driving racecars, so there’s a good balance there.”

Coming back from such a serious crash has its challenges, mostly recovering physically from injuries but also regaining the mental approach to racing competitively against other supercompetitive drivers, but Chaz says that it’s something all racedrivers face.

“The crash didn’t put me off racing at all, I really missed it when I wasn’t driving and I couldn’t wait to get back into the car.”

When Chaz is home and out of his racesuit he turns from racetrack to water sports but it’s still fast and furious.

“I live by a canal on the Gold Coast so I go out on Dad’s boat and I’m just getting my jet ski fixed at the moment. As soon as that’s done I’ll be hitting the jet ski hard again. Anything to do with the water and being outside.”

Riana Crehan knows a thing or two about Supercars. She was the face of the Supercars,winning the Miss V8 Supercars competition some years ago. This was also race driver Will Davison’s first year of racing and the year they met. They now have a unique relationship: they travel together across the country with their respective jobs, Will concentrates on fast laps while Riana provides commentary from pit-lane - interviewing the drivers and providing commentary on the action in the pits and on the track.

Riana says she wasn’t the traditional ‘rev-head’ when she entered the world of Supercars but after winning Miss V8 she got to travel around with them and

experience life in the fast lane.

Riana loved the media connection and working alongside the drivers and crews. She knew she wanted to continue working in motor racing so she started in a small role and worked her way up to pit-lane reporter.

“It’s a great job, and even though Will and I aren’t together on race days, as we are both busy in our work, at least we are usually at the same place,” Riana said.

This also means they can be flexible with their time off while away from home, and enjoy relaxing at home when they are on a break from the racing world.

Riana wouldn’t trade life in the fast lane for any other job.

Developing tomorrow’s SpiritED leaders West Moreton Anglican College is forging ‘SpiritED’ leaders of tomorrow by not only pursuing academic success, but also fostering physical, social, emotional and spiritual development in their students.

Principal Mr Geoff McLay says they identified and analysed the growing levels of anxiety and depression throughout the country and created a remedial program called SpiritED. He said the program ensured students were not only well equipped for success at school but also in life.

“At WestMAC, we aim to prepare our young people with the ability to be flexible and responsive to change with a focus on continuous improvement,” he said.

The WestMAC SpiritED program is a fully integrated, interdisciplinary program extending from Year 3 through to the end of Year 12.

Mr McLay says the program is synchronous with their Religious and Values (RaVE) program, Life Skills and chapel services.

“With the addition of SpiritED, we now have a strong synergy between our spiritual and wellbeing-focused initiatives that perfectly reflect the three domains of our motto: Faith, Knowledge, Service,” he said.

The program began with a series of initiatives exploring and addressing the College’s mental health issues and wellbeing.

The College then launched an awareness program developed jointly with Di Tamer from Principals Australia Institute which used the resources of the highly regarded MindMatters.

“We found our awareness program was useful, but it was really just the first step along the path to creating an initiative specifically tailored to the needs of our students and school

community,” said Mr McLay. The next step was to identify a list of desirable attributes - apart from scholastic - that WestMAC valedictorians should have by the time they left school. The attributes were identified through consultation with staff members, students and parents.

“Our Attributes Project sought to define the West Moreton Anglican College’s graduate, not in a prescriptive, specific sense, but more broadly imagining of how a well-rounded school leaver should present,” Mr McLay said.

“This description therefore paid close attention to addressing the mental and spiritual wellbeing aspects of development.”

Based on their research, WestMAC announced an updated Strategic Vision which included for the development and implementation of a cohesive mental and spiritual health program. Before implementing SpiritED, College leaders searched available mindfulness literature and visited other schools to research their wellbeing programs.

The research led to a pilot program which is being implemented in 2016 and will be evaluated and analysed for further developing the SpiritED program for 2017, Mr McLay said.

“So far, our pilot program appears to be working well, but we won’t know exactly what might

need to be tweaked until we’ve undertaken a thorough feedback and review process,” he said.

A key aspect identified so far in the wellbeing program is the approach to focusing on student strengths rather than weaknesses.

Mr McLay said this positive approach has been critical to outcomes.

SpiritED includes the following components: Seligman’s Positive Psychology to replace negative thoughts and behaviour with more positive ones by incorporating scientific methods and modern psychology; Carol Dweck’s Growth Mindset to focus on success and happiness from dedication and meaningful work, rather than any innate ability; Mindfulness practices that align with the College’s and program’s aims; and Service Learning that fosters altruism in students by helping others in the community.

GPS Girl® inspires at Limestone Dental Karen Jacobsen, the Australian voice of the Siri application on millions of devices worldwide, has motivated Limestone Dental Group staff to navigate change in their lives to achieve great results.

“In my ‘Recalculating Change’ seminar, such as in Ipswich, I aim to help people navigate change in their lives to deal with things that do not go as planned,” Karen said.

“In the program, there’s a fivestep process in how to do that. My message is to be able to be our best, do our best, deliver at our best, look and feel our best, and be our best in life.”

Karen helps organisations and people cope with transition in what she calls ‘the age of digital disruption and corporate disruption’.

“People need to have the skills to cope with change, to be adaptable, and basically improve their strategies to be better at it.”

Karen says that the number one challenge facing women in the workplace is lack of confidence.

“They are capable, they are brilliant, practical and have so much to offer, but I think culturally we aren’t necessarily raising girls to believe that they can do everything that a man can do.

“All I can do is to share my experience, overcoming chronic anxiety, and building my own confidence. Last night I sang at the State of Origin in front of 50,000 people, and I felt amazing about it, but there was a time when performing in front of people would have really freaked me out.

“If we can take charge of our own lives then we can also take charge

in our work lives.”

Karen recognises both the value and the negative power of social media on women and her advice is to not react quickly.

“I think the delete button is one of my favourite things about social media, and recognising that degrading comments are not really about me, it’s where the author is at,” Karen said.

Now a renowned, New Yorkbased entertainer, singer, motivational speaker, voice-over artist and songwriter, Karen was born in Mackay Queensland, and was writing songs at age of seven.

Karen was inspired to be a singer through her idol Olivia NewtonJohn, whom she saw on television.

“I told everyone I would be a professional singer and I would live in New York,” Karen said.

“You know what they said in Mackay? Who do you think you are.” And the rest is history Limestone Dental Group’s Dr Peter Lupton said that Karen’s workshop was part of an in-house program aimed at increasing the confidence levels of staff.

“It’s led to better communication skills, and in our environment - no one likes coming to the dentist - our treatments are expensive so it important that we can communicate honestly and clearly about things,” Dr Lupton said.

Garland saw it as ‘their song’ and felt betrayed when Loesser sold the rights to MGM for the song to be used in the film Neptune’s Daughter.

John and Michele are a showbiz couple who make plans to write their own show. Things are going well until John is made an offer to appear in a leading role in a West End production. John departs for London to follow his dream leaving their show in tatters. Michele too receives an offer to appear in a stage production in Australia.

Their relationship is sorely tested when Michele discovers that John has recorded ‘their’ song Baby It’s Cold Outside with his new co-star.

Mayhem prevails as John hatches a plan to get back together with his true leading lady.

The narrative concert follows this story linking classic songs such as: Gershwin’s They All Laughed, Rodgers and Hart’s Where Or When, the memorable Beyond The Sea and of course the show’s centrepiece, Loesser’s Baby It’s Cold Outside.

Creating that perfect picture The 2015 Overall Winner of the Enviroplan Photographic Competition, Murray Fox, knows what it takes to get that perfect photograph of our local environment.

His picture, titled ‘Sunrise over Redbank’ brings together all the elements of a prize winning picture; it had composition, colour, depth, mood and excellent technically.

Having entered the competition 10 times, Murray is a great fan of the Enviroplan Competition because it allows full scope for his passion in the photographic art form - landscapes.

“I’m drawn to landscapes because I’m able to capture that moment in time when the scene, the lighting and the mood all come together, then lost in the passage of time,” Murray said.

“I’m out and about all the time, finding favourite spots that have the potential for eye-catching photography. I work out the framing and the lighting aspect to give that feeling of three dimensions in what is a two-

dimensional medium.

“I use side lighting a lot these days, and shoot often before dawn and as the sun rises, before the white light floods the scene.”

Murray’s advice to photographers is to “get out and shoot all the time” and plan ahead.

“Great photos are usually the result of a lot of legwork beforehand, then getting there ready to capture that moment when everything is working,” Murray said. “It’s no use seeing the perfect picture on your way to your access point, and its gone when you get there.”

Murray has an understanding family who know that photography forms a large part of his life. It’s one of the reasons that Murray is an early bird on shoots and home after the sun comes up.

Murray is looking forward with great anticipation to submitting works in this year’s competition.

“I just love being there, seeing everyone’s work on display, and marvelling at the talent of our photographers here in Ipswich.”

Social entrepreneurs map out their future A creative clothing line that raises funds to support medical aid in remote African communities is just one of the socially responsible business ideas of four entrepreneurial West Moreton Anglican College students.

Thanks to their impressive business ideas, Hannah Ward, Lachlan Palmisano, Harrison Spencer-Matthews and Salomon Lukonga have been selected to take part in an innovative 14week Ipswich business program run by Fire Station 10 and Impact Academy’s Impact Youth Accelerator.

Fire Station 101 Community Manager Chad Renando said the 14-week program is “creating the social entrepreneurs of the future”. The student’s other ideas include mobility for aged care, a photography platform to raise awareness of mental health, and an “edutainment” approach to sponsoring endangered species.

Salomon says he applied to be a part of the Impact Youth Accelerator program to nurture his business ideas.

“Starting my own venture had been on my mind for quite some time and I am excited to be given the chance to attend workshops with business professionals,” he said. “I aim to develop a creative clothing line that fundraises for medical equipment in remote African communities. I have only attended two workshops, however what I have learnt has been tremendous.”

Impact Academy’s program involves specific training and mentoring in the various facets of social entrepreneurship including social enterprise, 14 LIFESTYLE | JULY 2016

corporate structure, brand positioning, technology, the value of collaboration, people and governance.

Mr Renando said the students’ business ideas would “continue to change and evolve over the course of the program”.

“Participants are provided with opportunities, coaching and support to enable them to take their bold social entrepreneurial ideas and turn them into scalable projects which positively impact their community,” he said.

The program runs for 14 weeks with a 1.5 hour workshop each week, held after school.

“The Fire Station 101 innovation hub is also made available on Saturday mornings for these young entrepreneurs to work though their business plans and utilise the creative co-working environment,” Mr Renando said.

“We hope that students obtain real customers in the marketplace and gain practical experience on running a business before they graduate from high school.”

“Our intention is that schools in the Ipswich region, such as West Moreton Anglican College, are recognised as leaders in innovation. “We want people to look at Ipswich as a city of opportunity.”

Choosing the perfect curriculum and school for our children is a daunting prospect, especially in the early years when interests and capabilities are constantly evolving and as state-by-state practices change over time.

Steve Rainbow expands his Ipswich business Nine years in business and five years in Ipswich, Steve Rainbow, owner of Articulate Framing, is firmly established in the local community, which he supports wholeheartedly.

F-111 ON GUARD AT RAAF AMBERLEY F-111C A8-138 is now on permanent display, guarding the Main Gate to the air base, thanks in large part to Group Captain John ‘Wardo’ Ward who conducted a nine-year campaign to secure the space for the the jet at its former home base.

This long journey began back in 2007 when GPCAPT Ward was the Base Redevelopment Officer, previously an F-111 pilot. He saw the need to reserve a place for the F-111 at the main gate, and he set about turning that vision into a reality.

At the dedication ceremony recently GPCAPT Ward relayed the story of how the F-111 was saved from the landfill graveyard, like so many others, and take its place at the main gate.

“It’s heartwarming for me to see A8-138 here on display and under cover finally, and to see so many people here that share that view,,” GPCAPT Ward said at the ceremony.

“During the early design of the new main gate complex I suggested we set aside a space for the F-111. Then on the plans a square appeared on the plan designating this site - and I looked after it and made sure it didn’t disappear.”

A canopy over the F-111 was a necessity, as aircraft out in the open deteriorate rapidly without continual maintenance, and obtaining funding proved problematic.

“In 2007 funding for the cover was removed, which presented an uphill battle for me, but I did make the case that while we had earthmoving machines on base that at least we prepare the site, and that was agreed.” GPCAPT Ward said.

“Years passed, then on a visit to Amberley, the then Air Commodore Warren McDonald asked me if there was anything needed at Amberley.

“Oh, what a beautiful question,” said GPCAPT Ward. Then in 2015 he got the news he was waiting for, when Air Commodore Scott Winchester “took me aside and said, “Wardo, I think we have funding for the cover and, hallelujah baby, thank you Air Commodore Winchester and thank you DCAF.”

The Bristol F2B Fighter provided by TAVAS (World War I Vintage Aircraft Society) was flown by 86-year old, ex-77Squadron Fighter Combat Instructor Jack McDonald. The Bristol was painted in WWI-era colours and had the tail number B1229.

This tail number was flown by Ross

McPherson Smith who achieved 10 of his 11 victories in the aircraft.

TAVAS has the only collection on flying WW1 type aircraft in Australia (www.tavas. com.au).

No 1 Squadron headquartered at RAAF Base Amberley comes under the command of 82 Wing within Air Combat Group.

Originally, the squadron was formed under the Australian Flying Corps in 1916 and saw action in the Sinai and Palestine Campaigns during World War I. The squadron flew obsolete Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2s, B.E.12s, Martinsyde G.100s

and G.102s, as well as Airco DH.6s, Bristol Scouts and Nieuport 17s, before reequipping with the R.E.8 in October 1917 and finally the Bristol Fighter later that year.

Its commanding officer in 1917–18 was Major Richard Williams, later Sir Richard Williams, known as the “Father of the Royal Australian Air Force”.

Disbanded in 1919, No. 1 Squadron was re-formed on paper as part of the RAAF in 1922, and re-established as an operational unit three years later.

SWEET POTATO CINNAMON BREAD FROM ‘WHOLEFOOD FROM THE GROUND UP’ BY JUDE BLEREAU This is an exceptionally easy and delicious bread that will keep for some time, and it toasts brilliantly even if a couple of days old. The bread is wonderful enjoyed as is, or paired with the date butter, or tempeh bacon or patties, or smoky pinto beans. It also freezes well.

Dietary info: gluten free and vegetarian. Makes 12 slices Ingredients 160 g (1 cup) brown rice flour 70 g (½ cup) teff flour 30 g (¼ cup) chickpea flour (besan) 1 tablespoon rapadura sugar or raw sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 eggs 80 ml (2½ fl oz/cup) Cultured Buttermilk (page 50) or plain natural yoghurt 2 tablespoons full-cream (whole), non-pasteurised milk 250 g (9 oz/1 cup) mashed sweet potato, cooled 100 g (3½ oz) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces pinch of sea salt Method Preheat the oven to 180˚C (350°F) and generously butter a loaf (bar) tin (see Kitchen Note).

Place the flours, sugar, baking powder and cinnamon in a bowl.

Mix through with a whisk to

combine the ingredients and break up any lumps of flour.

Place the eggs, buttermilk and milk in a small bowl and whisk to combine well, then add the mashed sweet potato and mix until well combined.

Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs – some bits should be the size of a pea. Add the wet mixture and stir through until just combined. Spoon into the prepared tin and bake for 40–45 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Leave to cool for 15 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

To store, wrap in a piece of foil lined with baking paper and store in a cool dark place for up to 5 days.

To freeze, slice and store in a sealed container.

Kitchen Note This is best made in a loaf tin that is narrower rather than wider; providing less surface area for the bread to hold together once cut.

You can happily make this in a 1 litre (35 fl oz/4 cup) capacity loaf tin, but I prefer a smaller 750 ml (26 fl oz/3 cup) capacity cast-iron terrine dish measuring around 27 × 8 × 4 cm (10¾ × 3¼ × 1½ in) that will make a lovely narrow loaf.

Gose (pronounced Go-suh) is an historical style of beer brewed in the town of Leipzig, Germany.

Unfortunately, there are only two traditional breweries still brewing Gose in its own town. Craft beer has often resurrected and given a new life to forgotten but beautiful and interesting beer styles like this one.

Traditionally Goses are slightly tart, savoury and spicy (coriander), and light in body and alcohol.

Nomad Brewing, based in Brookvale NSW, has a limited release Gose on the market called Freshie Salt & Pepper Gose.

Nomad doesn’t tend to do ordinary when designing recipes for their beers but, even by their standards, adding a few buckets of seawater to a beer seems a little out there. But there’s method to the madness here as they’ve tried to capture the essence of the Northern Beaches in a glass.

Nomad Freshie’s saltwater came straight from Freshwater Beach, just down the road from the brewery, but other than that they’ve aimed for a fairly faithful interpretation of the style, using pale and wheat malts, Willamette hops and a German ale yeast.

The classic Gose recipe calls for coriander, which they’ve added, but Nomad have given their version an extra local touch by also including Tasmanian mountain pepper. The resulting beer is something along the lines of what

the name suggests: salty, spicy and refreshing.

This Gose has a sourdough crust sort of nose, but it’s smooth, rather than aggressive. In the mouth it feels heavy, due to the wheat content. It’s not salty as you drink it, but once you swallow it, it leaves a minerally feel with a hint of lemon persisting through.

It is a very interesting, but lovely experience drinking this beer – it keeps you coming back for more.

This clean, crisp, refreshing and very moreish beer is pouring right now at Tap’d but supplies are limited so get some before it’s gone.
