We are thrilled to present our exciting, new LifeStyle Queensland magazine - covering what’s hot in Ipswich, Springfield and Defence. Through 2016 our monthly magazine will bring you great stories on local lifestyle and events, celebrity chats, entertainment news and more. Our totally redesigned website is now online at lifestyleqld.com.au - bringing you daily updates on latest news and happenings in the region. Please pay us a visit, and we would love to hear what you think of the new website. A strong focus for LifeStyle Queensland will be on social media, particularly on Instagram and Facebook. Our News Editor, Hayley Walker, will update the content daily so keep a lookout for that. Also, check out Hayley’s column in this edition in which she describes how our readers and advertisers can join our social media family. With the change of name comes some change in content but be assured we continue to be an Ipswich business, 100% owned and operated, so promoting Ipswich continues to be our priority. A number of people have asked why we changed our banner to LifeStyle Queensland. The main reason is that while Ipswich people and businesses are loyal to our great city they want to reach out to other places, to bring people and business into the city. Our changed name reflects that sentiment and is also in line with the Advance Ipswich plan that seeks to evolve Ipswich into a world city - progressive, innovative and in the digital sphere. Our company embraces that vision for the city, and with the magazine we will reach out to other places, remembering that Ipswich is home. Please enjoy LifeStyle Queensland in print, online and through social media. I look forward to hearing what you think of our new look.

SPREADING POSITIVITY THROUGH ART Travis Vinson, owner of ‘Graffiti Murals’, has brought spectacular art and colour to the Ipswich CBD with bold and colourful graffiti murals depicting parts of Ipswich history, and local events. Outside the Queensland Motor Museum the legend of Peter Brock and his famous .05 Holden Torana XU1 have been immortalised in mural imaging. On the local front, the fabulous ‘Kitsch in the Swich’ event is displayed in a mass of colour and one with a simple welcome message in beautiful orange tones, featuring the iconic T.C.Beirne building. Travis is a talented and experienced artist who has a strong attitude of ‘spreading a positive message’ through his art. With a prominent interest in art at an early age Travis started his career signwriting and

transforming chalkboards for local businesses. He did briefly go down the wrong path with graffiti and got in trouble with the Police but realised it was something he loved and couldn’t give up. Travis had to find an alternative way to continue with graffiti and started his company ‘Graffiti Murals’ and businesses now pay him to transform their properties. Chances are many Ipswich people have already seen his murals. Travis actively discourages any kind of tagging or illegal graffiti; he has worked hard to build a solid reputation so his mission is to only undertake approved works.

Discover Fernvale

Travis encourages the youth of today who may be on the destructive path of illegal graffiti, to practise art and express themselves legally. Mayor Paul Pisasale has welcomed the idea of more artwork in the city, and Travis feels it’s a great way of deleting tags and transforming blank walls into spectacular and long lasting imagery. Anyone wanting their own graffiti art or information on a graffiti workshop are welcome to hire the services of Travis or one of his graffiti artists at www.graffitimurals. com or follow his artwork on instagram @ drapl

NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL AT BRASSALL Mountain bike riders now have a demanding but trail-friendly place to ride, with the opening of an 800 metre trail near the Mi Hi Bridge at Brassall. Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the trail allowed riders of all skill levels including juniors and beginners to try mountain biking and build their confidence. “The trail has been rated Green (easy) under the International Mountain Bicycling Association Trail Difficulty Rating System,” Cr Bromage said. The trail follows the contours of the land to make for a rewarding ride along the creek banks, with mounds for adventurous riders. “It’s perfect for people who want to move away from concrete paths and build their confidence on a dirt trail,” Cr Bromage said. “There are no big jumps to negotiate so it’s great for younger riders.

“A viewing shelter will be built in the next few weeks so parents can watch their children ride, and it will also include a bike repair station.”

ROAD THROUGH IPSWICH MALL PART OF CBD REDEVELOPMENT Ipswich City Properties and major developer epc.Pacific have reached agreement to relocate the council’s administration offices and city library into a new landmark 15,600sqm nine-storey building within a redeveloped Ipswich Mall. Included in the plans is to open the Mall to one-way traffic. The $150 million urban regeneration project will also feature leisure and entertainment venues, restaurants and specialty stores in a three-level retail and mixed-use centre. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said there would also be a strong focus on a new town square, in line with council’s vision of restoring the heart and soul of the Ipswich CBD. “Ipswich is no different from any other Australian city, where the CBDs have been under pressure from regional shopping centres. “But today is a day about the city moving forward; this is about opening up the Mall to the river and creating a destination place for people to come and enjoy their city. It’s all about bringing people back into the CBD.” It’s almost 30 years since the CBD was open to the river, and the plan is to create a new outdoor terrace overlooking River Heart Parklands. A major objective is to connect the CBD across the river with Riverlink, to create a city centre that combines mostly retail at Riverlink with the cultural, entertainment and business precinct of Ipswich Central. Ipswich City Properties Chairman Paul Tully said the agreement with epc.Pacifc puts aside any doubts about the future viability of the

The project completed in the 2018/2019 financial year.

entire long term project. “Having epc.Pacific on board with their vast experience in property and development, places the city in the best position to get world class results,” he said. Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said that the Woolworths supermarket and shops between the rotunda and Bremer Street would be removed, and the Mall would be opened to one way traffic from Brisbane Street down the Mall and into Union Place to Bell Street. A new 3,800sqm Woolworths will likely be built at a site adjoining Union Place. Cr Antoniolli said this will help transform Ipswich into a true 24/7 city replacing the Mall concept,

which is outdated and hasn’t work anywhere in Australia, except Queen Street Mall in Brisbane. “A relocated library and administration centre will bring activity to the city centre,” he said. The library has about 8,000 people visiting each week.” epc.Pacific Managing Director Patrick Smith said that before detailed plans are finalised the company would consult widely with the business community, residents and key stakeholders and custodians of the city centre. The Ipswich project will be the company’s largest undertaking in Queensland. Above: Artist plan of the new Ipswich CBD looking across the river to Riverlink.

NATURAL BORN KELLER Anyone who said that age slows you down has never spoken to Amanda Keller. An entire generation has grown up watching, listening and laughing with the girl who grew up in Annerley, and her new autobiography is full of ‘LOL’ moments as stories from her life are peppered with her own brand of humour. Amanda started her career on the show that a whole generation remembers. ‘Simon Townsend’s Wonder World’. She moved on to Beyond 2000 which took her around the world. She’s appeared on dozens of TV shows since those days including stints on The Midday Show, Talkin’ About Your Generation, Good News Week, Rove Live, Denton to name a few, and she’s still on TV every Friday night on Ten’s ‘The Living Room’. Yet the busy mum also manages to co-host the No.1 breakfast radio show in Sydney. For someone with such a long

career in the spotlight, her book was a long time in the making. “I’ve been asked a couple of times before about writing a book, but I never felt the timing was right,” said Amanda. “But I think a lot of my friends like me, are in our early 50’s now. We’ve done the baby thing, we’re dealing with our parents getting older and going into homes, so I felt the time was right to put down what had happened in my journey so far along with my thoughts on it all. It actually took a long time to write as you can imagine I really don’t have much spare time, and it took me ages to hand it in. “I thought how do I write a book of my life to date and the editors suggested to break it up into the teen years, the beyond 2000 years…so I wrote it in little pods. I think a lot of my life has been lived with other people, and there’s a

familiarity with my humour that I think we all have.” Amanda’s first job in TV was as a researcher on Wonder World. Every single day she had to come up with two stories, and keep in mind this is the days before the internet. She remembers it one of the most manic, stressful jobs she’s ever had. “It’s hard to tell if all TV was like that, as it was my first job so I’m not sure if I remember it that way due to that fact, and I’ve worked in other jobs that were also stressful… but on Wonder World I’d never had anything else to judge it by. “I worked on the Midday Show and that never felt as stressful, but perhaps it was because I knew what I was doing by then. Some of the friends I made while on the set of Wonder World are still my best friends today. We had such an incredible worth ethic, but it wasn’t the easiest job.”

Amanda then went onto a role on the popular show ‘Beyond 2000’ (yes TV did exist back then kids), which took her around the world filming segments for the show which aired for a decade on our screens. Amanda spent six years travelling the world, spending six months of each year away from home. While it may sound glamorous, it wasn’t, but she came out of it with a list of incredible experiences. The nation started to see her sense of humour, and it was her good friend Andrew Denton we have to thank for getting her out of her shell. “I’d worked on a science show, been a producer, researcher. A TV or studio audience sees you in a certain way, and here I was on the Denton show with someone who is a comic legend,” Amanda said. “Andrew wanted me to show a different side to my personality.

Movies in the Park back for 10th Year The ever-popular Movies In The Park program has been announced for 2016 and is sure to be another big hit with local residents. The six-movie summer and autumn series includes familyfriendly films on outdoor big screens from Chuwar to Goodna so note the dates below and lock them on your calendar. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the free community program was now in its tenth year. “Thousands of people have turned out to enjoy an evening under the stars since council started supporting Movies in the Park in 2007,” he said. “This year we’re once again grateful to Heritage Bank for backing the program, and we look forward to seeing smiling faces at some of our city’s great green spaces.”

I still see myself, even today as someone who is funny the same way my friends are, I’m sure it’s not unique, and it was hard in the beginning to accept myself, never mind expect an audience to see me as being appropriate for a comedy show. “My passport says ‘Broadcaster’, because I don’t know which part of what I do to put on the form. People come up to me and say ‘I love your show’, but I don’t’ know which one they are referring to most of the time. It could be radio, it could be TV…but that’s a great thing. I’m in my fifties and involved in so many things. It’s such a privilege to be in that position.” The life of a breakfast radio presenter begins at 3am, and Amanda describes what motivates her each morning. “You never feel anything at 3am,” Amanda said. “What gets me out of

bed changes every day, but I know that when my head is under that shower head, I feel like a human. I get to the office and the fun part of the day kicks in. “But that alarm, no matter who you are is the saddest, hardest part of the day for everyone.” The photos in her book are a trip through fashions of the 70’s through to today, something she finds hilarious. “A few people have said I look better now than I did back then, but come on, the 80’s were SO unattractive! The shoulder pads, the big hair…EVERYONE looks better now than they did in the 1980’s! “I feel sorry for young people now who have pressure on them to look good. I’m glad we never had to go through that, in the 80’s we all just did our own thing.” Natural Born Keller is out now through Allen & Unwin

TRUMBO IN CINEMAS 18 FEB CODE WORD: TRUMBO In this fascinating true story, Oscar nominated actor Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) portrays Dalton Trumbo, the successful Hollywood screenwriter who was blacklisted in 1947 by the studios under the direction of the infamous House Committee on Un-American Activities. Holding strong to a belief in free speech and refusing to name “suspicious” friends, Trumbo was vilified in the communist witch-hunt that took place in America at the height of the Cold War. With an irrepressible creative talent, Trumbo would find his way back into Hollywood, writing several scripts under pseudonyms during his exile, including Roman Holiday, and winning two Academy Awards under alias. The new range includes modern low back couches, modular couches and accent chairs with a huge Scandinavian influence, which is very on trend in the mainstream market. LABOUR OF LOVE Mount Crosby business owner Vanessa Bissett of ‘Shesha and Grace’ knows how quitting your day job to follow your dreams can be the making of you. Her Mother was an artist, her Father a Carpenter so it was a natural progression for Vanessa to dabble in furniture re-fininshing. With a great eye for classic pieces and the talent to transform something old and tired into something beautiful, she was always painting and re-finishing furniture for her own pleasure.. Working as a full time hairdresser, her clients would visit her salon and be blown away with her work on display. Customers would leave with a $30 haircut and a $500 piece of furniture. So three years ago Vanessa decided to quit her day job and invest in her real passion.

At a time when shabby chic homewares and eclectic furniture was all the rage, Vanessa knew she had a key opportunity to launch her own business. Upon visiting her studio, it is apparent how much time and love is put into each piece, which is probably the main reason behind her success and ever growing brand. From an Irish family, she has a strong work ethic and oldfashioned values, she goes above and beyond for each and every customer. This coupled with her talent, unique service and passion driving her, she is unstoppable and a real inspiration for anyone who is thinking of a change in career. You have probably come across some of her work around Brisbane. Her colourful display of tables and chairs are sitting at Colleges Crossing in Karana Downs, she was involved in the rebuild of Hanworth House and because of that her work was featured in Queensland Homes magazine. EXHIBITIONS BEGIN AT ART GALLERY Ipswich Art Gallery has some fantastic exhibitions this year. Currently on show are pieces from Australian Artist, Jan Nelson’s ‘Walking in tall grass’ collection. Where she uses a highly refined technical skill and the visual use of realism to create stunning portraiture. The collection is a series of meticulous paintings, where teenagers and children have been removed from their usual background, replaced with bold colour.

The portraits capture adolescence and the hyper-awareness of your surroundings during that time. It really is spectacular seeing the paintings up close. Also on offer is the exceptional ‘Behind the Lines’ political cartoon exhibition. A selection of 80 of the best cartoons from 39 cartoonists, this exhibition displays some of Australia’s most controversial cartoons that test the boundaries of free speech and the freedom of the press. Not only are they great drawings, they are sure to bring a smile, laugh or a grimace to your face! There’s plenty to keep the kids occupied and right now they can let their imaginations run wild with the creative ‘Imagine this…’ concept. Imagine this... is a hands-on studio space where children and families can imagine and make art together. Four inventive art works by Australian artists provide the inspiration and all the art materials are provided. It’s the perfect way to encourage children to explore an artist’s ideas and to stimulate their own imaginations. Left: ‘1960s Plastic Weave’ exhibition in March. Right: Portrait by Jan Nelson on show now in the Gallery.

SCHOOL IS BACK! Head of Ipswich Junior Grammar School Mrs Karen McArdle offers these Top Tips for Back-to-School Season! Make that transition from holiday sleep-ins to a school routine a little easier by: • HAVING BAGS PACKED AND UNIFORMS OUT THE NIGHT BEFORE Mornings are usually the most hectic time of the day, so being organized the night before makes for a more relaxed morning • SET BED TIMES making sure you adjust accordingly to the age of your child • SET THE ALARM CLOCK FOR MORNINGS leaving enough time for a good breakfast and some family time • HAVE YOUR CHILD PACK THEIR OWN BAG that way they know what is in there and where it is • ATTACH AN IDENTIFYING RIBBON OR BAG TAG ONTO BAGS for easy identification • USE PLASTIC BAGS AROUND LIBRARY BOOKS so if lunch boxes or drink bottles

open, books are not damaged • HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN PRACTISE OPENING LUNCH BOXES AND BOTTLES – they can be quite tricky and often hard to open • PLAN MEALS WITH YOUR CHILD so they know what they are having at both morning tea and lunch. Sometimes, separating these meals is a good idea. Discussions around planning meals helps you to learn your child’s likes and dislikes and reduces food wastage. Always increase amounts on high energy days such as swimming and sports days. • WHEN YOU ARRIVE HOME IN THE AFTERNOON, GET OUT OF UNIFORMS and have afternoon tea before starting homework. Setting a good routine for early in the afternoon is best. As the day gets on, students become tired. Trying to get homework done at this time leads to arguments and battles. These are best avoided.

VALENTINES DAY

5 BUDGET FRIENDLY DATE IDEAS Whether the thought of Valentines Day fills you with joy or with dread, don’t be fooled into thinking that February 14th has to cost a small fortune to be special. The whole point of Valentines Day is to do something special with the one you love and show them that you care. If you are worried that the modern culture has spoilt the day with tacky cards and shop displays, take things back to basics and show your significant other how much they mean to you with a well thought out date.

1 2 3

PLAN A DREAM TRIP TOGETHER Planning a holiday is always fun, whether it’s an elaborate, expensive holiday or a camping trip on the coast, make it as fun as possible by getting brochures from the travel agents or making a vision board. You’ll get to know lots about each other in the process. GET A COUPLES MASSAGE This could be heading to a spa, a Chinese masseuse at the market or even just getting out the coconut oil and spending some quality time together at home. PACK A PICNIC BASKET AND HEAD TO THE PARK Whether you make a day of it or take the candles and enjoy a twilight date. A picnic together is a great opportunity to enjoy each other’s company over a bottle of wine and your favourite foods. There are plenty of spots to take your pick from all over Brisbane.

4

SUNSET LOOKOUT Drive to a lookout point and watch the sun go down together. For extra romance points, have their favourite songs playing in the car

5

A ROMANTIC MEAL AT HOME Surprise your loved one by lighting lots of candles, having some soft music playing in the background and cooking their favourite meal.

Galentines Day If you haven’t already heard of it, Galentines Day is all about celebrating your gals with your gals! The concept comes from the American comedy series ‘Parks and Recreation’ starring Amy Poehler. In the 16th episode of the second series Poehler’s character Leslie throws her annual “Galentine’s Day” party for her female friends, celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day. It’s basically just a day to celebrate the special gals in your life and it’s the perfect chance to get them all together: your friends, your mum, your sisters or even your co-workers. Local Ipswich Photographer Amanda Waschevski from ‘Salt Mama Studios’ who’s main motto and basis of her business is ‘women supporting women’ fell in love with the idea of Galentines Day and calls it ‘the best day ever’ she has come up with a line of artwork to celebrate the day, with framed gold foil prints, displaying the words ‘Happy Galentines Day’, ‘I’ll share my wine with you’ and ‘Cupid is Stupid’ To purchase a print or organise a photo shoot with Amanda, visit the Salt Mama website saltmama.com.au

Fun Facts about

Valentines Day

According to recent statistics, about 3% of people will give Valentines Day gifts to their pets Every Valentine’s Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet. VALENTINES DAY

FASHION AND STYLE RACHEL VICKARY FOR IPSWICH CITY SQUARE

VALENTINES KISS Your Valentine’s Day makeup begins with a K.I.S.S…(Keep It Simple, Sweetie!) It’s the most romantic day of the year, and many of you will be heading out to paint the town red, dine adieux or catch a mushy movie with your Valentine, so we’ve created a quick checklist of how to nail the best beauty trends for your big date. Think fresh skin, lightly-flushed cheeks, neutral or natural lip tones, soft and sexy eye makeup and natural but defined brows. This year, we recommend leaving off the false lashes, ditching the heavy eyeliner and leaving the ruby red lipstick in the drawer and instead, creating a fresh and fabulous look to let your natural gorgeousness shine through. For the perfect, fresh-faced Valentine’s Day makeover we tried Designer Brand Cosmetics from Discount Drug Store Ipswich. We

love that they’re vegan, cruelty-free, not tested on animals and best of all, they won’t break the bank. Here are a few of our favourite, romanceready products: • THE PRE-FOUNDATION Moisturising Primer is perfect for creating a super-soft, natural and dewy complexion. Wear it under the lightweight, oil-free foundation and finish with a very light dusting of Natural Ground Mineral powder. • DUST SOME PRESSED MINERAL Blush in Blossom or Glow on to the apples of the cheeks for a fresh-as-adaisy glow. (Remember, less is more, so add small amounts and build the colour) • WE LOVE THE QUAD EYESHADOW in Cocoa Brown, with a hint of Kohl

eyeliner in Black Brown, followed by lashings of Lash Extensions Mascara (go for water-resistant just in case your Valentine’s Day flick brings a tear to your eye). Lightly run the Brow Pencil over your brows following their natural shape but keep it very soft and natural – this year the brow trend is far less strong and defined than it was in 2015. • GIVE YOURSELF A KISSABLE POUT... by lining your lips with the DB Lip Liner – we love the natural colour of Beige Rose which gives you a hint of colour without being overpowering– and then finish with a slick of Longwear Lipstick in French Rose or Pink-Beige.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER Although the Summer sun is wonderful, it can leave your skin dry and prone to premature aging. This Summer make sure your skin is protected whilst enjoying the heat. • USE A DAILY MOISTURISER WITH AN SPF • DON’T WORRY ABOUT A TAN The long term benefits outweigh the short term benefits. If you are constantly in direct sun or using sun beds you are much more prone to wrinkles and even melanoma. • STAY OUT OF HARSH SUN ...at the hottest time of the day Between 10am- 3pm • CHECK YOUR SUN SCREEN ISN’T FULL OF CHEMICALS Unfortunately not all sun screens are that great for your skin. Check the ewg.org website to see which sunscreens are the safest to use. • SHOWER AFTER SWIMMING Always remember to wash the

chlorine off of your skin after a day at the pool, Chlorine is a chemical that is damaging to the skin. • DRINK PLENTY OF WATER We’ve all heard it over and over again but that’s because it’s vital to your skin and your whole body to stay hydrated. • EXFOLIATE Getting rid of any dry skin will help your skin stay smooth and look great. UNDERSTAND YOUR RAYS • ULTRAVIOLET A (UVA): The longest wavelength of the sun, this one penetrates the dermis, your skin’s deepest layer. Sun damage can activate free radicals and promote skin aging. • ULTRAVIOLET B (UVB): This wavelength penetrates the skin’s upper layer, the epidermis. These rays cause sunburn, allergic reactions and skin cancers. After six times of being burned, the skin has double the risk of developing a fatal melanoma.

ENTERTAINMENT

TAP’D TIM RULE | PA HOTEL Beer is something a lot of us love, but why is that? It tastes good and it’s refreshing are the most common responses and they are some great responses, but I’m here today to give you some extra ‘ammo’ when posed with the question as to why you love beer First things first, beer and food is a match made in heaven. It doesn’t matter what you’re eating, a beer exists that can compliment or contrast your meal, and can even cleanse your palate for your next course. My ultimate pairing is spicy cajun chicken wings with a bold fruity IPA - a perfect match! Not only does the IPA cool the heat, it also accentuates the herbs and spices. Now, when it comes to moderate alcohol consumption and its health benefits wine gets all the credit - well not today! Your beer contains just as many antioxidants as a glass of wine plus it’s higher in protein and Vitamin B. Now while I don’t recommend any alcohol as a health food, if you’re going to have an alcoholic drink, why not have one that contains iron, calcium, phosphates and fibre - beer of course. Also, research by Italy’s Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura shows that both men and women who drink a little more than one pint of beer a day are 31 per cent less likely to suffer from heart attack, stroke and heart disease. Now I must stress, I am not saying go out and drink as many beers as you can because it’s good for you, moderation is key. Finally, beer, especially in Australia, has the negative stereotype of causing the dreaded ‘Beer Belly’. Beer does not directly cause you to increase in weight, it is what we eat with the beer that ultimately does the damage. To some up, beer, when consumed in moderation, should be something you can enjoy and not something you feel guilty or self-conscious about consuming, and if you want to try some cracking beers, and impress your friends with your new knowledge about beer, then head down to Tap’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel, with 72 different products on tap they are the home of all things beer! Cheers!

GREEN CURRY LAMB SHANKS WITH MICHELE CRANSTON

Lamb shanks always make me think of winter and, to be honest, it’s the only time I really feel like cooking them. With that in mind, I thought it might be nice to bring some summery flavours to this wintery dish. TWO IPSWICH BIKE RIDES JOIN FORCES Two of Ipswich’s bike rides which raise funds for charity are joining forces to stage an even bigger and better event in 2016. The Heritage Bank Ipswich100 ride, organised by Moggill Mt Crosby Lions Club and the 24//7 CSF community bike ride will hold a single ride on Sunday 17 April 2016. The ride will be held in the middle weekend of the Ipswich Festival, and will be part of a big cycling weekend for Ipswich. Cyclists flock to the city for the ride and for two Ipswich City Council sponsored criterium races planned for the inner city on Saturday 16th April. Ipswich100 ride convenor, Bob McGregor, said it makes good sense for organisers to stage a single ride when the number of charity bike rides in South East Queensland continues to grow and there’s competition for community, bike rider and corporate support. “In addition, the Ipswich Hospital Foundation was the event partner for both rides in 2015 so it makes sense for them to make best use of their resources,” he said. 24//7CSF founder, Troy Dobinson, said “24//7 would not lose its identity in the Ipswich 100 event. The charity will organise and sponsor two of the rides that make up the five courses available to Ipswich 100 riders in 2016. “The “Fun 5” is an opportunity for families with young children to ride in a safe environment together. 24//7CSF has always offered a

25km length ride in the past, so this is positive inclusion and we look forward to building a better ride for Ipswich,” he said. THE RIDES ARE 24//7 CSF “Fun 5” a 5km ride for children and parents on a special course on closed roads on the University of Southern Qld Ipswich campus. 24//7CSF “Esprit 25” a 25km ride for riders above 13 years from USQ to Walloon and return. Exact Radiology “Eminent 50” a 50km ride through Walloon and Rosewood returning to USQ. St Andrews Hospital “Classic 100” a 100km circuit south of Rosewood through Harrisville and Peak Crossing returing via IpswichBoonah Road. Heritage Bank Imperial 100 challenge This 100 miles plus course adds a loop south of the 100km circuit passing by Moogerah Dam and through Boonah to return to Ipswich on the 100km course. More information on the Heritage Bank Ipswich100 will be released as the ride approaches. For more information on the Ipswich100 go to ipswich100.com

I’ve known Emma since she was literally 9 years old and we had this very brother-sister relationship and it just felt very surreal. I have a memory of her face getting closer and closer. SUPER HORNETS PREPARE TO RETURN TO MIDDLE EAST BY JOHN ARMSTRONG

Following on from its combat mission deployment to the Middle East during 2014 and 2015 the F/A-18F Super Hornets at RAAF Amberley have a busy operational year ahead, including the current deployment to Exercise Red Flag in the United States, and returning to the Middle East in the future to continue combat operations against ISIS forces. Newly appointed Officer Commanding 82 Wing, Group Captain Glen Braz, said participation in Red Flag was a major training activity for the Super Hornet aircrews of No 1 Squadron and a high priority for the ongoing development of the Super Hornet capability. “We face dedicated adversary systems and aircraft at Red Flag, so it’s a great training location for that reason. Our jets will be part of ‘Blue Air’ forces, working with our allies as a true multirole strike fighter.” This is the first time Super Hornets are participating in Red Flag and they bring an expanded air-to-air capability to the exercise. “Previously with the F-111 we flew in Red Flag missions in a pure strike role relying on limited information from controllers and onboard systems, largely avoiding threats. But now in the Super Hornet we can actively engage those threats and control the fight far more than we could in the F-111,” GPCAPT Braz said. “We have always been highly regarded at Red Flag, and that has been taken to a new level with connections we made in the Middle East and the expanded capability the Super Hornet brings to the fight. “Also, 6 Squadron is about to deploy to Exercise Cope North in Guam involving air forces from the United States and Japan, so most of the Amberley-based units will be deployed for the first part of the year,” he said. “Later in the year we will be involved in Exercise Pitch Black when we will again fly multirole missions such as self-escort strike as well as air defence, taking advantage of the jet’s outstanding precision strike capability, as we have seen on operations.” The deployment to the Middle East so early in the Super Hornet’s operational development has enabled the RAAF to accurately assess the aircraft’s capabilities in the modern warfare context. “This is certainly the case in the air-to-ground capability and it’s given us the opportunity to really bed that down – and with the new weapons such as the new laser JDAM it gives us that blended laser and GPS guidance option, providing an enhanced moving target capability,” GPCAPT Braz said. “There are other things coming along as we upgrade the hardware in the jet, in terms of its digital targeting capability, so the jet is getting more and more capable. “It’s also given us some insights into where we want to take the aeroplane in terms of that armed strike capability and the spiral development program, coordinated with the US Navy. These operations have also confirmed

we are on the right track and that we are doing very well with the platform.” The duration of missions over Iraq with air refuelling, extended to 10 hours on average, which makes it a long day for aircrews strapped in to a small cockpit. “That’s been great experience for the team and the jets performed really well, with great serviceability provided by our maintenance personnel – almost a faultless mission availability outcome,” GPCAPT Braz said. “Using our own maintenance personnel also enabled us to test our logistics systems and bed that down in a deployed environment.” The connection with the KC-30A air refuellers was also important. “The KC-30s were engaged in multiple taskings, primarily supporting the Australian Super Hornets, but also flying multiple missions daily to support the Coalition fighters,” GPCAPT Braz said. “So there was very close teamwork between all of the Air Task Group elements that were there in a one-team approach within Air Task Group.” The interaction between Super Hornet, KC-30 Air Refuellers and E-7 Wedgetail AEW&C has increased markedly during the early stages of operational development of these three relatively new highly capable platforms. “KC-30 is maturing into a fantastic tanker, really impressive with the boom (ARBS) coming on line, which will be a real bonus for coalition operations,” GPCAPT Braz. “It fits very well into the current and clearly the future Air Force role.”

EDITOR’S NOTE This is the first part of the Super Hornet story. In the March issue of LifeStyle magazine Group Captain Glen Braz will discuss the role of the E-7 Wedgetail, the highly anticipated arrival of the EA-18G ‘Growler’ squadron and the future direction of the Super Hornet squadrons. DEFENCE

RECORD PRECISION BOMBING EFFORT IN IRAQ F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft with Australia’s Air Task Group deployed to the Middle East have employed more weapons on targets in one calendar month than ever before, hitting what is believed to be the first non-militant infrastructure targets since World War II. The Hornet fighter-attack aircraft released 73 precision guided weapons during November 2015 in support of the US-led international coalition, with the clear objective of disrupting and degrading Daesh forces. Then, in early December 2015, Hornet pilots successfully targeted and destroyed an oil facility. The Coalition strike rate is denying Daesh freedom of movement and consequently their ability to mass forces and to conduct resupply of their fighters in the field. The Coalition continues to target Daesh’s means of transportation, heavy equipment, command and control nodes and logistic supply centres, ensuring a continued degradation and disruption of their operations. Flight Lieutenant Nathan, Armament Officer for the Air Task Group’s strike operations said the ground team had worked hard in support to the Coalition campaign. His job is to ensure that supply, storage and subsequent configuration of ordnance meets the high operational demand. “The Air Task Group strike element runs two types of missions: Close Air Support and Deliberate Strikes,” he said. “Close Air Support involves supporting friendly ground forces, while Deliberate Strikes focus on preplanned strikes on Daesh strategic targets. “To achieve these operational objectives, munitions including Laser Guided Bombs and GPS Guided Bombs need to be transported from Australia to the Air Task Group’s Main Air Operating Base in the Middle East. “They are then assembled according to mission requirements by Armament Technicians prior to use by F/A-18A Hornet aircraft.”

The payload carried by the F/A-18A Hornet on each mission is carefully planned using sophisticated damage assessment modelling to achieve the desired effect on the target whilst ensuring minimal risk to the local population. Armament Technicians configure these munitions by assembling bomb bodies with guidance tail kits, nose cones, fuses and various other weapon components. Flight Lieutenant Nathan said the weapons employed on a mission can vary greatly in both explosive payload and method of precision guidance.

“We need to ensure we have a constant resupply of weapons in the correct quantity and type so we can continue effective air operations against Daesh,” he said. A Royal Australian Air Force KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft enables Air Force to conduct air-to-air refuelling of Australian F/A18A Hornets and other coalition aircraft over Iraq. Air-to-air refuelling is essential for ensuring Coalition aircraft can remain on-station for as long as possible to conduct or support close air support and precision strike operations in support of Iraqi Security Forces.

PROFILE: RAAF SECURITY FORCES IN MIDDLE EAST It’s an exciting time to be a part of the evolving Security Forces trade within Air Force following the first enduring employment of Air Force Security (AFSEC) personnel on Aircraft Security Operations (ASO) in the Middle East. ASO duties involve protecting aircraft, crew, passengers and cargo on the ground and during flights across the area of operations, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Flight Lieutenant Jason Gillon, Officer in Charge of the current Force Protection Flight for the Middle East Combat Support Unit, said AFSEC members bring their expertise of airfield security operations to the team. “The AFSEC members join with our Airfield Defence Guards and Air Force Police personnel to make a complete security package,” he said. “The Airfield Defence Guards bring a warfighter capability to the protection of people and assets in potentially hostile situations, while the Air Force police have excellent skills for managing and de-escalating situations. “The AFSEC personnel deal with base and aircraft security everyday back in Australia, so they have a finely detailed knowledge of the overall planning and running of Air Force

security operations.” LAC Sean Gillett is normally an AFSEC dog handler in Australia; however he has left his best friend at home to take on the job of aircraft security. “It’s taken a lot of training to be deployed in the ASO role,” he said. “However, the results have been worth it. “My job is more dynamic: previously I would have had to stay on a base guarding empty planes. “Now I get to fly with the aircraft rather than watch it fly away. “Working with the pilots, air specialists and logisticians also has given broader insight into what Air Force does as an organisation. “After all, that’s what Air Force is all about – using aircraft and people to get the job done.” Sergeant Greg Page and Sergeant Geoff Bell with military working dog handler Corporal Shaun Richardson on the flightline after completing a security task on board a RAAF C-130J Hercules transport aircraft.

HISTORY SNIPPETS Ipswich General Hospital 1889 Now the Alice E Wilcox building, this building was built in 1887 as the Jubilee Children’s Ward. The ladies of Ipswich worked energetically to raise £422 for the building and Sunday School children collected £30 towards its furnishing. At first a single storey, a second storey was added in 1908. It became the School of Nursing in 1968 and was named after Matron Alice E Wilcox who was the matron at the hospital from 1933 to 1967. The building now houses the Ipswich Hospital Museum. The Ipswich Hospital, itself was built after considerable community fundraising and opened in March 1860. It was one of the first public hospitals in the state. Monies raised by the Sunshine League would help build the Sunshine Childrens’

Ward at the hospital. After attending a reception at Queens Park on December 4, 1934 the Duke of Gloucester then laid the foundation stone and the building was opened in July 1935. The first patient was admitted on March 3 of that year. Members of the community with photographs, documents or home movies of Ipswich, whether sporting photos, leisure, families, businesses, houses, anything that gives a snapshot of the Ipswich of the past or today, can contact the Ipswich Libraries’ Digital Archivist on 3810 7272 or email pictureipswich@library. ipswich.qld.gov.au The photographs are scanned and returned.
