BUNK PUPPETS’ HILARIOUS ANTICS BACK FOR EASTER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS This Easter school holidays, Bunk Puppets are back at the Ipswich Art Gallery with Swamp Juice, where audiences are invited to come and meet a man in a swamp like no other. Audiences will be inspired and captivated as a life in a swamp unfolds as unimaginable creatures are created before the audience eyes - bickering snails, neurotic snakes and opera singing mice to name just a few. Family audiences of all ages are set to giggle uncontrollably at both the shadow puppet creations and puppeteer, who is also front and centre during the performance, and gasp at the spell-binding 3D shadow puppet finale. A spokesperson for Ipswich City Council said the performance was sure to be a highlight of the Easter school holidays for families. “Once again the Children’s Gallery at the Ipswich Art Gallery is presenting audiences with
captivating, creative and engaging programs for children and families. “Swamp Juice audiences will delight in watching everyday recyclable materials come together to create swamp dwelling creatures, which are then projected to hilarious live cartoons. “When acclaimed puppeteer Jeff Achtem brought Bunk Puppets show Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones to the Ipswich Art Gallery last year, there were fits of laughter and huge applause in every sell out performance. “This Easter School holidays Ipswich audiences will once again be able to see this internationally acclaimed performer.” Swamp Juice has had rave reviews worldwide.
From “Wonderfully enchanting, an absolute delight! London Evening Standard, to “Hauntingly beautiful, awesome “, Adelaide Advertise, reviewers in Edinburgh, New York and Adelaide have testified to the skill of Achtem’s performance and the joy of being in the audience. Swamp Juice is on at the Ipswich Art Gallery from Tuesday 29 March to Saturday 9 April. With adults at kids’ prices, all tickets are just $7 each and under 2’s are free. Book early to avoid disappointment! Bookings can be made easily at the Ipswich Art Gallery website ipswichartgallery.qld. gov.au/

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A GOOD CAUSE That’s the philosophy behind the Heritage Bank Ipswich 100 Bike Ride. Since it’s inception, this incredible event has raised funds for various local Not for Profit charities and organisations in the Ipswich and Brisbane region. It’s an event our own City of Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has been proud to support and we would also like to acknowledge the great work of McIntyre Centre for providing life changing activities to special school students from Ipswich to Brisbane. Now....It wouldn’t be a success without the volunteers, sponsors, groups and organisers. The Moggill Mt Crosby Lions would like to thank The Heritage Bank, Ipswich City State Emergency Service - SES - Unit, Lions Club Of Ipswich, Regional Lions Clubs and Sponsors St Andrew’s-Ipswich Private Hospital, Exact

( QLD ), various Fruit Market/Food Vendors, The Haggerty Group Ipswich and the QT. This year, with the help of 24/7 Cycling Safety Fund, the Heritage Bank Ipswich100 will feature five rides catering to all types of cyclists, with all courses starting and finishing at the USQ campus. These range from a 5km on campus family and kids ride to a 170km road ride within the Scenic Rim, taking in Walloon, Rosewood, Warrill View, Harrisville, Kalbar, Mt Alford, Boonah and Peak Crossing before returning to Ipswich. TSAC PREPA FUTURE WIT At The Springfield Anglican College significant consideration has been given to how best to prepare students to enter the future workforce, so the College has embarked on an Authentic Learning Programme to empower graduates with life skills and experience. The Springfield Anglican College recognises it is now as important to help students to develop the skills and understandings, such as teamwork, emotional intelligence, resilience, critical and creative thinking and the ability to solve complex problems, as it is to acquire and apply knowledge. This year the College has embarked on a journey as an Authentic Learning Community, aiming to ramp up the number of real-life, real world learning experiences students are exposed. Authentic learning is an instructional approach that allows students to explore, discuss and meaningfully construct concepts and relationships in contexts that involve real-

ARES STUDENTS FOR THE TH AUTHENTIC LEARNING world problems and projects that are relevant to the learner and that connect the classroom to the outside world. Exposure to authentic learning opportunities will assist students in understanding the relevance of what they are being asked to learn and also engage students in their learning more so than the more traditional methods of teaching and learning. This year parents of students from Year Four upwards will gain access to the College’s Learning Analytics programme. Rolled out to parents and students in Years Eleven and Twelve in 2015, the programme, and associated mentoring programme, proved invaluable in assisting students to identify specific areas for improvement across their subjects and, in doing so, raised their overall level of achievement significantly. Last year’s Year Twelve cohort achieved extremely credible OP results with 94 percent achieving in the OP 1-12 band and, by their own admission, give credit to the power of the programme and support offered by their mentors. A short video capturing the views of staff and Years Eleven and Twelve students can be found on the College website. The power of Learning Analytics programme lies in the fact that students, parents and staff
can access live data about their performance and where they sit in relation to their class and cohort. All schools have this data but few have it centrally located and available for viewing as recent as the last assessment marked. Further, as part of the mentoring programme, students are asked to set long-term and short term goals, which are also entered into the programme and are refined as the year progresses. Linking the Learning Analytics programme to the College’s authentic learning community journey, the College will be able to very easily monitor the progress of students as they are exposed to, and challenged by, this different paradigm of learning. During Semester One this year, the College will be releasing details of a newly developed enrichment and extension programme to cater for the very academically able students entering Year Seven in 2017. This is an exciting initiative that will add to the range of enrichment and extension programmes and structures already well established across both campuses. Details of this new initiative will made available to the College and wider community in the early part of Term Two. Steve Croft, Principal

NUMBER 1 APPLIANCE TO CAUSE FIRES
HOT HOME DÉCOR TRENDS 2016 We look at the upcoming trends and what is hot in home décor right now according to Houzz, Pinterest and the world wide web… Scandinavian style – This was incredibly hot throughout 2015 and the ‘Scandi’ style is showing no sign of going anywhere. Everyone still loves the white look with wooden finishes, geometric patterns and playful pops of colour throughout a room. Typography – This trend is only getting bigger. Who doesn’t love an inspirational message or your favourite quote in beautiful curly writing, displayed in a unique frame? It’s a great feature for any room. Metallic/gilded - wallpaper is set to be a huge trend throughout 2016 with ‘feature’ walls stepping up their game. Metallic wallpaper is great for low-lit rooms or adding that wow factor to your walls. Statement mirrors – A great way to make a room look larger is to add a mirror to it, look out for geometric shaped mirrors, cedric wall mirrors and strap mirrors.

According to NRMA insurance studies, reverse cycle air conditioners are the leading cause of appliance related fires in the home. With over 10,000 house fires that result in death or injury occurring every year, the statistics are far from reassuring. Protecting your family Here are some simple things that you can do today to help reduce the risk and prevent fires from starting: • Frequently clean Air Conditioners • Dust unused power points • Be careful not to overload your power board Are your air-con power bills out of control? PORTRAITS WITH PURPOSE Local artist Deb Mostert is busy finishing off her ‘Dogs for Ukraine’ series that was recently launched on social media. Deb is involved in a team of mission workers heading over to the Ukraine on the 10th of March to help families living in poverty and she is doing a series of 100 pet portaits to raise money for the community she is visiting. The idea for the series came about after she had been commissioned to illustrate a portrait of a dog. She decided to set herself a challenge of drawing 100 dog portraits and charging a discounted rate of $50 per portrait to raise money for the cause she is so passionate about. The response she had was amazing and within

days the 100 portraits had been ordered and Deb raised $5000 for Ukraine. Due to Poverty, the fall of Communism, Political unrest and Corruption, Ukraine has become a war torn Nation and over the years millions of innocent people have lost their lives due to starvation alone. In Ukraine $1 AUD is equivalent to 15.5 Hyrivna. The money Deb has raised will go such a long way in helping many refugees from Eastern Ukraine, Community projects such as a water boar and bio-diesel fuel.

YELLOW PAGES JOINS FORCES WITH PET RESCUE Brisbane Residents have been treated to a home delivery of cuteness as the latest Yellow Pages hit doorsteps last month. For the first time in the iconic directories’ history, the Yellow pages books are supporting national animal welfare charity, PetRescue, in a move which will see the book cover being used to help rehome some of the regions favourite four-legged friends. The 2016 Brisbane Yellow Pages books feature rescue pooch, Chancey who was rehomed through PetRescue partner and local animal rescue organisation Homeless Hounds, a not for profit rescue group. When residents open their book they will be greeted with a simple guide to help them find their new best friend, as well as information on PetRescue and the vital work they do in Brisbane and across the country. Sensis spokesperson, Stephen Harvy, said “working with PetRescue to launch our new 2016 Brisbane Yellow Pages books, is a fitting way to bring together local businesses and residents with their

EXCITING YEAR AHEAD AT ALLYS KINDY Allys Kindy is a family-owned Childcare Centre in Ipswich that strongly believes in providing a warm and nurturing environment where children can learn and develop in an atmosphere of trust. We believe one of the many things that sets us apart from other centres is the commitment of our educators. Located just 3 minutes from the back gate of RAAF Amberley, Allys Kindy in One Mile has a Queensland Government Kindergarten Approved Program. It is delivered by our qualified, 4 year trained early childhood teacher for children in the years prior to Prep, for 40 weeks a year. Exciting things will be happening this year for the children at Allys, with the introduction of the new one-on-one ‘Personal Reading Program’ designed to get Kindergarten children ready for Prep using word recognition and learning word skills. This year every age group will spend time with on-staff Educator and Music Teacher Fleur, who will teach the children an ageappropriate fun and educational ‘Introduction To Music’. Allys Kindy caters for children from 6 weeks up to 5 years old, with a staffed kitchen located on the premises, lots of grassed areas for playtime, plus an ‘Open Door’ policy. THE FADING FLOWER Local Ipswich man Nemen Kpahn who is originally from Liberia appeared at the Barry Jones Auditorium in Ipswich on Wednesday 24 February for a free event where he talked to the public about his passionately written novel ‘The Fading Flower’. The book, which is set in Liberia, focuses on the struggles the Country has faced but is centred around two strong military characters Maxwell Forkpa and Samuel Dahn. Dahn is a cool professional soldier who, though charmed by life in the limelight, wishes for a return to true civilian rule devoid of military men who have exchanged their uniforms for suits. In the clash between the two, Dahn is forced to flee Liberia. Finding himself in involuntary exile, Dahn becomes obsessed with removing Forkpa, his archrival, from power in an aggressive manner. This sets the stage for a violent conflict, which will drag the two men and their nation down into the abyss of anarchy. A story of how two people that were once great friends, who through power and corruption became deadly enemies. Hearing Nemen speak about his personal life in Liberia, fleeing his country and living in refugee camps before he moved to Australia as part of the government resettlement program, was very eye-opening and inspiring. MAKE-UP TIPS Francesca, Make-Up artist at the Stefan salon at Riverlink shopping centre gives us her tips on achieving a flawless makeup look that can be worn for a day at the office and how to transition it to a night time look. OFFICE LOOK
EASY UP DOS FOR WORK WITH STEFAN RIVERLINK
The hair stylists from Stefan Hair at RiverLink shopping centre show us how to achieve 3 easy up do hair styles.
THE LOW TWIST PONY
THE MESSY BUN
THE SIDE BRAID AND BUN
This incredibly easy and pretty style is achieved by putting some light curls through the hair with GHD straighteners. Then pull the hair into a low ponytail leaving about an inch gap from the bottom of your head to the hairband. Push your fingers through that gap, creating a hole, then twist the ponytail up and through that hole.
Create curls with GHD Straighteners then section your hair into two ponytails. One on the top part of the head, one directly underneath using the other half of the hair. You then simply pull sections into a bun shape, fastening with hair slides, combing both the ponytails together. Spray with hairspray for a better hold.
Start with a French braid going from the left side of the top of head and braid all the way down, keep braiding until you reach the hair on the other side and then add this into the braid. So you will have a French braid on the left side of your head, going into a regular braid on right side. You can then gather this braid up in a bun and secure with hair slides. The bun will be fixed at the bottom of the head just behind your right ear.

Come through with a light shadow and place it all over the mobile lid.
Today I did a nice light brown and just really focused it to the outer corner and lightly through the crease, also bringing it under the eye to bring the look together. Press the brush onto the lash line and simply just glide it across the lid. Finish with a good coat of mascara and nude lip
CHANGING TO NIGHT
EYES Smudge some black shadow into the outer corner of the eye and really focus on your circular motions and only just lightly putting it through the crease and under the eye, add a highlighter to the very inner corner of the eye and put a shimmer through the mobile lid also adding a highlighter to the brow bone. Add some false lashes to bump up the whole look. To finish add more of a dramatic lip whether it be a garish red or a deep brown.

CMC Rocks Ipswich festival sold out! The excitement is building for the iconic CMC Rocks concert being hosted by Ipswich for the second year in a row. This is Australian music history in the making as it is the first time any Country music festival has sold out. It is thought that over the three day period from Friday the 11th March to Sunday 13th the daily attendance numbers will be in excess of 45,000! Mayor Paul Pisasale from the City of Ipswich is excited and proud that the first CMC Rocks festival to sell out is taking place in Ipswich.
“Ipswich has a proud history of firsts and we are absolutely thrilled to add being the first Australian city to ever host a sold out country music festival to the list,” Cr Pisasale said. “CMC Rocks is a great fit for Ipswich and this year’s record attendance at the festival over three days will be a great opportunity to showcase Ipswich to interstate and international visitors.” The strong international and Australian line-up would explain the sell-out success. Jason Aldean,
Kip Moore, Bradley Gilbert and Florida Georgia Line are just some of the acts flying in from around the world joining Australian stars, Morgan Evans, Adam Eckersley band, Buddy Goode and the Sunny Cowgirls. The Queensland Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland, is proud to support CMC Rocks QLD as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar, showcasing Australia’s best live events in spectacular destinations.

REBEL WILSON
The February release of comedy movie ‘How to be single’ saw our favourite Australian Actress Rebel Wilson all over the red carpet for the worldwide premieres and boy did she own it. Her bouncy blonde locks and big smile are complimented by her fearless fashion style and ownership of her curves. Fashion above everything should be fun, it should make you feel good and I think Rebel is pretty good at reminding us of that. Rebel typically sticks to a style that works for her, a knee length pencil skirt with a tucked in tee or a well fitted knee length dress but no matter what she wears it’s full of colour, style and personality and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Rebel has recently partnered with Torrid Clothing and launched her own fashion line for sizes 12-28. The line is not only fabulous but every item is under $100. Check it out at torrid.com/ rebel

COCONUT BARK WITH ROSEWATER, PISTACHIOS & RASPBERRIES (SUMMER) (VATA) SERVES 4 COCONUT BARK • 55 g (2 oz) coconut butter • 400 ml (14 fl oz) tin additive-free coconut cream • 2 tablespoons rosewater, optional (below or purchased) pinch of Celtic sea salt • 1 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract • handful of raspberries • handful of pistachio kernels, roughly chopped METHOD Line a baking tray or baking sheet with baking paper.
Melt the coconut butter in a bowl sitting over (but not touching) boiling water. Add the coconut cream, rosewater (if using), salt and vanilla, and stir to combine. Pour onto the prepared tray and scatter over the raspberries and pistachios. Freeze for at least 30 minutes or until solid. Remove from the freezer and break into shards or chop into squares. Store in an airtight container in the freezer. ROSEWATER (PITTA)
• 750 ml (26 fl oz/3 cups) filtered water • 3 large unsprayed roses, petals only, white bases removed • ½ teaspoon lime juice METHOD Prepare the rosewater the day before you want to serve the tea. In a heavy-based saucepan, bring the water to the boil. Add the rose petals and lime juice, then turn off the heat, cover and allow to infuse overnight. The next day, strain the rosewater into a large jug. Discard the petals.
TAP’D TIM RULE | PA HOTEL The Margaret River region in Western Australia may be small (producing just 3% of Australia’s total grape production) but it is mighty (accounting for 20% of the country’s premium wine market). Cabernet Sauvignon is the clear leader in the area and is followed by several other Bordeaux varieties thanks to a similar climate to the famed Bordeaux region. First planted less than 50 years ago, the area has quickly become popular with boutique producers. The Robert Oatley Winery, and in particular the Robert Oatley Signature Series, draws on a remarkable portfolio of vineyards nurtured by the winemaking talent of Larry Cherubino showcasing Australia’s most successful wine styles and regions. Bob Oatley’s mantra is that all wines should be a “darned good drink”, and the high quality Signature Series delivers immediate appeal, with satisfying flavours over an elegant frame. Each wine embodies the grape varietal and region in which it was grown. The 2012 Robert Oatley Signature Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon begins with a whiff of green on top of black cherry, black currant, dried herbs, a little mint and even a little tobacco. It’s a really nice, complex aroma. I’d give this wine a couple hours to breathe before tasting as it really develops nicely. It features similar flavours to the nose with dry, grippy tannins and a bit of minerality leading into the long lasting dark berry infused finish. One classy Cabernet! The 2014 Robert Oatley Signature Series Chardonnay is a wine of great elegance and poise. The aromas of this wine include stone fruits while the flavours include white peaches and soft oak. It enjoys a great structure, finesse and length, all mandatory to make a premium Chardonnay. A truly cracking drop! Both of these stunning wines are now available on the wine list in all areas of the Prince Alfred Hotel and are also available to take home from Harry Browns liquor store.
Cheers!

EVOLUTION OF THE SUPER HORNET IN AIR COMBAT BY JOHN ARMSTRONG
In this second article about the F/A-18F Super Hornet and how it fits into the RAAF’s Order of Battle into the future, Group Captain Glen Braz identifies how Super Hornet air combat operations are enhanced, working with the advanced E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ and how the new EA-18G ‘Growler’ will take Air Force air combat operations to a new dimension of air combat capability. The combined support provided to the Air Task Group in the Middle East, particularly by the RAAF’s relatively new KC-30A air refueller and the E-7A Airborne Early Warning & Control aircraft has enabled coalition forces to maintain a high level of combat activity while managing the risks of the operating environment.
“We saw KC-30 refuelling E-7 routinely in the airspace over the Middle East, which produced some world record flight durations of the E-7’ s737-700 airframe (up to 16 hours) in its Airborne Early Warning & Control role,” Group Captain Braz said. “That’s a long time for the onboard crews [on
the flight deck and sensor operators] working intensely all the time, but the interaction of the crews onboard these platforms has evolved a very capable Air Force team, in which these capable platforms support and enable each other, as demonstrated throughout our Middle East operations.

“The endurance of these platforms can go on and on, and it’s really only limited by the crews. The Super Hornet can air refuel multiple times but it’s a long stretch for the crew, as they are busy, working hard in a confined space.” Australian crews are challenged while operating in the complex battlespace of the Middle East but from a training perspective it’s great exposure for them, and the Super Hornet more than holds its own as part of the international coalition. “The Super Hornet brings some outstanding capabilities to the Coalition and, again, it’s been informative as to where we want to take the jet into the future and how we integrate the platform into Air Force and Joint capability plus the wider international coalition,” GPCAPT Braz said. The E-7A Wedgetail has had many setbacks in its production and development – mainly related to successfully integrating the MESA radar and leading edge systems onboard the 737-700 airframe. This resulted in significant production delays, lower than specified performance, and the need to realign the whole project. However, time passes and the Wedgetail AEW&C solution is now showing great results. “Early in its gestation the E-7 was challenging, with very ambitious project goals, but we have seen a pragmatic approach to achieving those goals – and now the platform is outstanding,” GPCAPT Braz said.
“There are some improvements coming along but right now it’s the most sought after air control platform out there. In theatre it’s proving to be very capable.” The EA-18G Growler will add a new dimension to Australia’s air combat capability, with about eight aircraft out of production in the United States and about 10 crews undergoing training with the US Navy. “Some aircraft are undergoing flight testing and some in storage, and we will begin flying
those about this time next year,” GPCAPT Braz said. “We are well integrated with the US Navy Growler team now, which is a great outcome as we have a lot to learn and they have been outstanding partners.” Growler will be assigned to No 6 Squadron, which means that all Super Hornet variants will come under No 1 Squadron. This will enable 6
Squadron to concentrate on Growler airborne electronic attack (AEA) operations while 1 Squadron will have the resources to meet an increased rate of effort. “It’s certainly a reshape and rebalance of the team, and because Growler is essentially a Super Hornet with some advanced mission equipment there will be significant blending of the maintenance support and logistics effort,” GPCAPT Braz said. Under a new approach to training combat aircrews, graduates from the Hawk lead-infighter training identified for either Super Hornet or Growler will undergo core conversion to type training with the US Navy before undergoing a relatively short orientation course within each squadron at Amberley to bring them up to speed on RAAF specific aspects of the aircraft and operating in the Australian environment. “It gives us that depth in 1 Squadron, and when you look at the Super Hornet and 82 Wing broadly in the next five to ten years we are fundamental to Australia’s air defence capability,” GPCAPT Braz said. “Having that assurance that 1 Squadron is there – resourced, trained and ready – is important to the nation.” Opposite page: EA-18G ‘Growler’ of the US Navy prepares to launch off an aircraft carrier. IPSWICH JETS APPRECIATE SUPER HORNETS AT RED FLAG RAAF combat jets have returned home from Exercise Red Flag, an DEFENCE FORCES international air combat training exercise conducted from Nellis Air Force Defence Force members and families will be special guests for the NAB Defence Force Appreciation Week, which culminates on Sunday March 13 with a great lineup of rugby league games plus a FREE family day of exciting things to see and do. The Ipswich Jets will open their North Ipswich Reserve ground during the week 5 - 13 March when teams from the Air Force, Army and Navy will battle out their Inter-Service competition. Ipswich Jets’ Nicole McPhee said the Appreciation Week gave the club an opportunity to recognise and appreciate the positive impact that the Defence Forces have on the community, bringing families, jobs and economic benefits. “The Ipswich Jets want to say thank you to our Defence personnel and their families for their service to the nation and being part of our Ipswich community,” Nicole said. “This year, we are expecting more than 3000 people along to the Sunday events, with the growth in
interest over the past three years. We are certainly proud that the club is the preferred venue for the Inter-Service competition games and being able to stage the family events in conjunction with NAB.” As an added bonus, the jerseys worn by the Ipswich Jets Air Force, Army and Navy players in their match against the Townsville Blackhawks on the day will be auctioned off at the conclusion of the competition, with proceeds going to the Mates4Mates organisation, which provides rehabilitation programs for current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who are wounded, injured or ill. Mates4Mates also supports the families of these Mates. Save the date for the week of great rugby league and come along for the Sunday family day at the Ipswich Jets ground at North Ipswich Reserve.
