Driptech – Zimbabwe’s leading irrigation specialists text by Michael Nott photography by Michele Fortmann

7

D MAIN PROFILE

riptech Irrigation Pvt. Ltd. is the most prominent supplier of irrigation and related equipment in the country. It’s a family business started by Bob Henson in 1995 and the current Managing Director is his son Peter Henson. From a fairly small start at their premises in Workington they now have three more branches in Harare – Borrowdale, Avondale and Eastlea, and a regional branch in Mutare. In addition they supply Bulawayo and other centres through various agents like Halsteds and N. Richards. They have their own pipe manufacturing plant and have also recently opened a tank factory as the company has grown to meet local demands. Driptech initially concentrated mainly on irrigation supplies for agricultural use but since around 2002 they have diversified into urban water supply as well as mine drainage equipment. They have a variety of solutions for almost any agricultural need and they are able to offer excellent advice and to design and draw up plans through their irrigation design office. If a farmer or smallholder is needing a new irrigation system installed Driptech could assess things like water availability (a dam, a borehole or a tank), soil type, crops, local vegetation, land gradients and other relevant factors. They could then draw up the best plan for the best solution – whether it’s overhead irrigation, centre pivot or drip irrigation. Their drip irrigation schemes help minimise water wastage and can be easily

linked to solar powered pumps making it ideal for rural situations where no electricity is available.

When necessary Driptech can consult with contract expert irrigation designers like Dave Bacon from Water Workshop. Once the best design has been drawn up Driptech will then work out a bill of quantities for the materials and equipment needed and the estimate cost. Although most irrigation schemes are fairly simple to install Driptech has a number of recommended installers who can put the whole project together if needed.

MAIN PROFILE

Driptech can supply every aspect of the irrigation plan including borehole pumps, tanks, booster pumps and pressure switches. They supply the recommended diameter piping from 20mm up to 500mm whether for underground or surface applications. Driptech stocks a wide range of pipes, fittings, valves, filters and virtually any accessory you could possibly need. Their range of piping includes PVC, HDPE, LDPE, copper and galvanised pipe, lay-flat hose and suction hose. They even offer a pipe threading service for steel pipes. Driptech are agents for the well-known brand of DAB pumps. DAB pumps are manufactured in Italy to the highest specifications 10

Apart from large scale agricultural irrigation solutions Driptech also specialise in micro-jet systems. Micro-jets have a number of different applications. Misters and foggers are ideal for situations where constant humidity needs to be maintained, for example for the tobacco industry and for horticultural greenhouses. Some restaurants even use misters on their verandahs to keep diners cool in the hot summer months. Micro-jets are also the preferred method for irrigating tree plantations the world over.

It is clean, smart, colourful and brightly lit with interesting displays of products. There are seven sales counters and seven dispatch counters so you never need to wait. The staff is friendly and well informed and the service is excellent. There’s even a Zimbarista outlet in the shop so you can sit down and relax with a cup of coffee and a muffin or grab a coffee to go. Manhattan Interiors Has A Brand New City Branch text by Michael Nott photography by Michele Fortmann 16

structure & design |

ISSUE 22

Manhattan Interiors, suppliers of top quality furniture and bed linen in Borrowdale Village (See Structure and Design volume 12.) have recently opened a new branch on the corner of Nelson Mandela Avenue and Angwa Street in Harare city centre. The Mandela branch occupies what was originally the old Radio Ltd Building which was designed by the architectural group Hoston, Barnes + Clinton & Evans. It was Mike Clinton’s first major commission. He later went on to design most of the high-rise buildings in the City centre over the next four decades, including the Karigamombe Centre and the Reserve Bank building.) It was the only major development in the City in 1965. The building has since passed through several hands but it has always remained a furniture store. The design of the building is ideally suited to a large retail store with existing access for deliveries, goods lifts and extensive street frontage for display. Manhattan Interiors has preserved or restored most of the original architectural features. The internal pillars, which divide the ground floor showroom into separate bays, have been retained. There’s a beautiful and elegant staircase which leads up to the first floor gallery. The staircase handrails and the bannisters on the gallery are still original although the stair treads and risers have been newly tiled. They’ve been clad in ceramic tiles which look like gently aged timber in a variety of different, soft hues.

17

COMMERCIAL PROFILE

The wood-look tiles have been used to create a narrow open passageway which starts at the front of the shop, where the admin and sales desks are set up, past the old (still working) passenger lift and then up the stairs. The old floor has been replaced by large concrete tiles in keeping with the Industrial look – which are ideally suited to show off the furniture displays.

The window section along Angwa Street has raised wooden platforms divided into bedroom sets, furnished and accessorised to let customers imagine how the furniture would work in their own homes. The showroom is designed to be a ‘retail experience’ – apart from being a feast for the eyes and stimulation for the imagination, there’s background music playing throughout and there’s even a scented vaporiser to keep the atmosphere fresh. The new Chop Chop coffee shop is integrated into Manhattan for shoppers to refresh themselves before, during or after browsing around the showroom. The first floor gallery creates a vast double volume space above the ground floor which is hung with huge, modern chandeliers and light fittings that emphasise the warehouse feel. Tracy Wilson, who designed the shop, has chosen an industrial chic, New York loft look, which compliments the furniture and also shows off the architecture well. Most of the ceilings throughout the shop have been removed to reveal the concrete slabs, beams, and the air conditioning and electrical ducts. In places there’s unplastered exposed brickwork and old weathered corrugated iron sheets (reclaimed from their factory) have been used as interesting wall cladding. Some old pressed ceiling panels form a decorative frieze above the passenger lift.

18

structure & design |

ISSUE 22

On the first floor gallery shoppers will discover yet more vignettes of furniture displays as well as an extensive section – almost one full wall of shelving – devoted to linens and soft furnishings. This section also encompasses their extensive range of high quality bedding and mattresses – a fairly new range that they’re expanding into.

19

COMMERCIAL PROFILE

On this level and above there are no west facing windows although the generous proportions of the open double volume space keep the area feeling light and airy. It’s an architectural design feature to help control the harsh afternoon sunlight. The floor above is currently used as a workshop cum storeroom for inhouse soft furnishings so it’s not readily accessible to shoppers.

20

ISSUE 22

There’s a huge custom made cutting desk and a vast selection of carefully selected, top quality upholstery fabrics. (The cutting desk was made by George Chavi from Ross Kitchens who also supplied a lot of the other carpentry and shopfitting.) The third floor also has some beautiful original architectural features.

There’s a huge roof lantern or skylight that floods the working space with natural light and there’s even an outside rooftop deck. The vision for the interior design and layout of the shop was supplied by Tracy and Jim Wilson while most of the construction and fitting was done in-house by artisans and tradesmen from J. W. Wilson. Manhattan Interiors is the retail section of furniture designers and manufactures J. W. Wilson. Jim and Alan Wilson are the current managers of the furniture manufacturing company which was founded by their father around 60 years ago. So, if you’re looking for a stylish and elegant range of top quality, locally manufactured furniture, linens, soft furnishings, bedding and home accessories drop in to the new Mandela Street branch. They’re open Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and on Saturdays from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. You’re sure to be inspired.

Coffee Culture comes to the City‌

text by Michael Nott photography by Michele Fortmann

‌Chop Chop opens their new Angwa Street branch

đ&#x;„ľ

ollowing on from the amazing success of their Fife Avenue branch Chop Chop has just opened a fresh and quite innovative branch along Angwa Street in the heart of the City. It’s situated within the new Manhattan Interiors outlet which used to be the old Radio Ltd. Building. (See page 16) What makes the new venue so different? Well, it’s actually made up of several distinct although integrated sections. One section opens directly into Manhattan Interiors through huge folding glass doors and is almost an extension of the showroom. Another section has comfortable cafÊ style seating for diners enjoying meals from the grill and pizzeria. There’s also bar counter seating that opens directly onto the street for people watching. There’s the takeaway counter for quick meals or coffee on the go. And then there’s the most exciting part – counters and seating on the pavement in European bistro style. For many years pavement cafes have been popular in Europe, North and South America, and many other parts of the world. Sadly Harare has just about completely missed on this particular delight. Harare’s wonderful climate means that the weather’s ideal for

28

structure & design |

ISSUE 22

outdoor eating almost the whole year round but few establishments take advantage of this, especially in the City Centre. It’s probably partly because in the past Council by-laws, left over from preIndependence days, have been quite strict. It’s probably also because the inner city has become a bit run down and neglected in recent years as Council struggles with inadequate funding for services and the invasion of street vendors. It’s also just something we’re not really used to. Outdoor cafes are great for watching the world go by, enjoying the weather, a quick business meeting with colleagues or a cup of coffee with friends. The pavement on Angwa Street is wide enough to accommodate tables and stools and still comfortably leave room for pedestrians. Although there are robust metal stools it would be just as comfortable to stand at the table for a coffee or a quick snack. The outside tables also have integrated flower boxes filled with hardy low maintenance plants that help to screen patrons from passing cars, as well as making the City that little bit more attractive. Of course there are security guards outside but

surprisingly the vendors and ‘streetkids’ have moved away. Maybe there’s a lesson there for the Council?

SPACE OF THE MONTH

The street front face of Chop Chop is concealed by industrial roller doors when it’s closed up. With the roller doors open a short flight of steps leads from the street up to the counter where customers can place their orders – so it’s open to the street but slightly separate. Customers can choose from a selection of pastries or more substantial meals from the Brazilian style grill or the pizza oven. Once you’ve placed your order you can sit at the counter on funky yellow metal stools while you’re waiting for a takeaway. Or, if you have more time to linger and don’t want to sit or stand outside, you can sit at the counter overlooking the street. Big glass windows fold back completely so it’s open to the pavement. On the few days per year when the weather’s not so good the windows can be closed but you’ll still get the view. The section below the counter is closed off with expanded steel mesh and glass to function both as a security measure and a modestly panel. Or if you prefer there are a couple of high bar tables with stools further away from the window. If you want to linger a bit longer there’s the option of banquette seating under a supercool mural of Bob Marley, created by local artist Chengetai. (The fabric used for the banquette upholstery here and in the coffee shop is a special high traffic fabric imported from France.) Kirsten Marx, from KRM Space Design, created the first Chop Chop outlet (Structure and Design issue 4). She has maintained a similar industrial look but here it’s a little more polished.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

The Dondo COLLECTION

đ&#x;…ƒ

he Dondo Collection is a collaborative project that fuses the manufacturing finesse of renowned Zimbabwean furniture producer, Nigel Joscelyne, with the design and engineering capabilities of ESB industrial design.

The Dondo Collection adopted its name from a local Shona word that describes a wooded area filled with beauty, mystery and mysticism. The range pays homage to these diminishing natural woodlands scattered across Zimbabwe’s landscapes. From the sparse fig trees

44

structure & design |

ISSUE 22

dotted over the baron wilderness of Mana Pools, to the densely entangled canopies of the eastern highlands, the local flora of Zimbabwe’s diverse woodlands continually manages to seduce the eye! The Dondo Collection uses locally sourced lumber, sculpted into fluid forms that mimic the beauty of naturally grown woodland branches. The design achieves this visual mimicry by adopting a construction method that uses simple two dimensional components arranged and combined to create more complex three dimensional forms.

Nigel Joscelyne HAND CRAFTED FURNITURE N.T. Joscelyne P/L is a Zimbabwean company founded in 1985 and has a prominent reputation in the manufacture of properly constructed furniture. The company is well equipped and operates from 116 Citroen Road in Msasa, Harare. With 30 skilled workers the priority has been to make furniture from Zimbabwean timbers using traditional joinery methods, resulting in long lasting value. The designs of the furniture we make are direct from client needs and desires or evolved in conjunction with architects, interior designers and artists. The scope of previous commissions has involved interior work in Zimbabwe’s best homes and in high profile hotels, lodges and camps throughout the region. Exports over the past years to the UK, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Australia serve to endorse the international appeal of the quality and service that the company has worked hard to promote.

DENDERE (COFFEE TABLE) Formulated in the early sketches of the design process, the Dondo Coffee Table is an ambitious concept that marries the beauty of simplicity with geometric structural integrity. Pulling aesthetic cues from the fallen branches of Zimbabwe’s natural woodland, the coffee table’s legs draw their visual

complexity from one simple form replicated and pivoted through multiple axes. The overlapping internal supports create a structural lattice that gains strength as the weight of the table top is applied to the frame. This beautiful top is made from toughened/annealed glass, and is bound to the base frame using three custom engineered and polished brass joints.

The collaboration with Elliot Beattie in the making of exceptionally interesting and unusual furniture is a new direction that will showcase Zimbabwean talent.

Elliot Stone Beattie INDUSTRIAL DESIGN Industrial design: is a process of design applied to products that are to be manufactured through techniques of mass production. About: ESB was established in 2013 not long after I had returned from studying Industrial Design at Kingston University in London. Since its inception, I have worked on multiple industrial design, branding and packaging projects both locally and abroad. Awards and accolades: 2011: Continental - University design and development competition: Runner up. 2012: Graduation project ‘Fold’ was selected as runner up for the ‘New Designers of the year award 2012’ 2013: ‘Simple in Tension’ project selected as runner up during the Zimbabwean – European Union Design Show at the National Gallery. 2014: ‘Simple in Tension’ chosen to represent the South African Delegation at London design week. First Non South African to be represented in the delegation. Simple in Tension: Peterson’s Furniture The first range of product called ‘Simple in Tension’ was a range of furniture that focused on using tension as a form of adhesive to hold the various components of the range together. 2930 Lighting : Copperwares Copperwares Zimbabwe approached ESB to develop a new range of copper and brass lighting under a separate company name in early 2014. ESB developed the range as well as the company name, logo, branding and packaging. Dondo Collection: Nigel Joscelyne The Dondo collection was formulated after multiple conversations between ESB and NTJ.

Kitchen and bathroom renovations are worth the investment text by Michael Nott

R

oughly 52% of real estate professionals say the kitchen is the most important room to focus on for resale. About 42% of the real estate industry insiders say that the bathroom is the most important room for resale purposes. * = Data derived from Remodelling Magazine’s annual Cost vs. Value Report. Dec 26, 2018 The owners of an older house in Highlands have recently remodelled their kitchen and not just one but four bathrooms. Although they’re not planning on selling in the near future the renovations have added a great deal of value to the home, not only financial value but enjoyment and lifestyle value. As with many older homes the kitchen in this house was completely isolated and separated from the rest of the house. Access to the kitchen from the dining room was quite awkward down a narrow passageway and past the existing pantry. Together with the help of Liz Howes from Howes and Homes the owners have created a stunning, new, modern kitchen that’s now has an open plan layout making it an extension of the dining room. The old pantry has gone and there’s a new fully functional scullery at the far end of the kitchen. (The old Oregon pine door to the scullery was reclaimed from the pantry during the renovations.) Howes and Homes demolished the walls dividing the dining room from the pantry and passageway to create a single more functional and much more elegant space.

50

structure & design |

ISSUE 22

Because the separate rooms now in effect became one big space the old fitted carpet in the dining room was taken out and new floor tiles were laid through the dining room, kitchen and in to the scullery helping to unify the space. Similarly the existing tongue and groove ceiling from the original kitchen was extended over the dining room to match. The tongue and groove ceiling has been painted an unusual grey/blue colour that makes the space feel quite dramatic. No boring natural pine or standard white! At the end of the kitchen a feature wall of exposed brick separates the new scullery. The brick adds texture and interest and helps unite the modern kitchen with the more traditional dining room. In front of the brick wall Howes and Homes have created a very clever tea caddy within an existing upright cabinet. The beauty of the tea caddy is that all the usual clutter of kettles and paraphernalia can be hidden away while still being quickly and easily accessible. The centre island was converted from an existing cabinet by Howes and Homes’ contract carpenter who fitted the new kitchen cabinets as well as adapting and re-using the old cabinets in the scullery. New Caesarstone tops were fitted throughout (by Lesley Williamson from Home Improvements) as well as a new hob and extractor and a double oven. A beautiful feature of the kitchen is the glass lantern shaped tiles and the glass metro tiles which the owner selected for the splashback. Not only did the renovations involve new plumbing there was also extensive electrical refurbishment necessary. The old electrical distribution board was mounted on one of the walls that was demolished so Howes and Homes had to get the whole board moved into the scullery. The result is a stylish and friendly open plan space that blends the modern functional kitchen with the more formal dining room.

51

INTERIOR DESIGN

The owners also renovated four bathrooms in the house – the master bathroom, the guest bathroom and two smaller bathrooms for their two daughters. In the master bathroom the old tub was removed and replaced with an oval free standing bath tub and a beautiful chrome free standing bath mixer. The mixer is so sleek and minimalist it’s almost a sculptural art piece. The new shower is a large walk in cubicle that becomes a mini wet room. There’s no need for a shower door or curtain. Howes and Homes has fitted a double vanity with underslung basins which keeps the counter top looking sleek and smooth. The large window at the end of the tub looks onto an enclosed courtyard so it’s very private and there’s no need for curtains or blinds. During the day the bathroom is filled with natural light and in the evening there are downlighters set into the ceiling but there are also wall mounted sconces for softer more relaxing lighting. Each bathroom in the home has its own distinct décor and appeal. In the guest bathroom the owner has selected large blue wall tiles which contrast well with the antique brass fittings in the shower and for the vanity. Even the towel rail has brass ends. The third bathroom is a study in black and white and here the owners have selected patterned tiles that are reminiscent of Spanish or Portuguese azulejos tiles. In keeping with the black and white colour scheme they selected matt black taps and fittings which add a dash of drama and panache. A slightly quirky feature of this bathroom is the vanity stand which Howes and Homes created by recycling an old sewing machine stand that has special sentimental value. The larger black and white tiles have been cut down into smaller mosaic style tiles inside the corner shower and to create the vanity counter top. 52

INTERIOR DESIGN

The fourth bathroom also has its own unique character and style. The feature wall has a hand painted stencil design by Melissa from Magic Brush (0772 114 969). Here two different colours and shapes of tiles have been used on the walls to create a more quirky and fun feeling. This shower has a double recess for holding bottles and jars as well as a hand held shower. It’s envisaged that the owners’ parents might one day be using this shower room so they’ll be able to sit down to shower. The owner’s flair for design and attention to detail, coupled with Howes and Homes’ renovation expertise, means the family can enjoy their kitchen and their special spaces for years to come. Truly a great investment.

Steel Centre International is now in Graniteside text by Michael Nott photography by Michele Fortmann

S

teel Centre International opened their first branch in 2005. It’s situated at 9 Rodens Street, Magaba, Mbare, opposite TM Magaba. The aim was to supply steel and related products at the best possible prices for the Mbare market as well as for the wider construction and mining industries. They wanted to provide excellent, fast customer service and create a one-stop shop for all steel and related products. The first branch, which is still operating, proved to be so popular that in February this year they opened a second branch at 16986 Sande Crescent in Graniteside. The new branch is almost double the size of the original branch allowing Steel Centre to keep larger quantities of their products in stock. It’s also a more convenient and accessible location for customers. Negotiating the Mbare traffic,

especially along Remembrance Drive, can be daunting, even when it’s not rush hour! The Graniteside branch is easily reached from Boshoff Drive just off the Seke Road. There’s loads of secure and hassle free parking for customers as well as ample driveway space for bigger delivery or collection vehicles. The new shop is constructed from steel trusses clad with Chromadek sheeting so it shows off some of the huge range of products that Steel Centre supplies. It was built by local construction company Grid Transmission and took around eight months to complete. There are big roller doors so it’s easy for bigger vehicles to get in and out. The shop floor is clean and orderly and the high roof and rows of translucent skylights make it bright and airy. Steel Centre International carries a huge range of stock so you can get all your steel needs in one place.

Why did Halsted Builders Express decide to open a branch in Marondera? City sprawl towards the town from Harare first spiked our interest in considering the growth opportunity, and, on analysis of the Marondera market we also found it comprised of a number of growing industries including agriculture and education. Furthermore the market had identified a gap for a local and reliable supplier of building material, of which we recognized as a chance to provide a solution to the community.

Did they see a demand for their services and supplies that couldn’t be met by the Msasa branch? A large number of Marondera residents were travelling great distances to purchase building supplies, not only to Harare but outlying towns as well. We wanted to offer Marondera and surrounds, the convenience of proximity.

Top 7 Benefits of Laminate Flooring

C

hoosing new flooring can be an overwhelming and exhausting task. If you’re searching for something affordable and durable that still looks amazing, laminate might just be the answer. To help make your decision a little easier, we want to tell you the top 7 reasons why laminate flooring could be the perfect solution for you and your family. 1. Laminate flooring is much less expensive than hardwood, but it doesn’t fall short on quality and appearance. If you’re on a budget, yet you love the look of hardwood, laminate flooring allows you to get the look without the breaking the bank. 2. Laminate is protected by a tough external layer and resin coating, which makes it strong, scratch-resistant and highly durable. It’s also resistant to fading from sunlight. If you have small children and pets, or you need flooring for an area that involves high traffic, laminate is the perfect choice. 3. Easy to clean. Unlike hardwood, the stain resistant nature of laminate flooring makes cleaning up spills easy – no special cleaners required. Just be sure to clean up spills quickly however, as laminate is not waterproof.

78

structure & design |

ISSUE 22

4. Easy to install. Laminate boards are designed to interlock, making them very easy to work with. They can also be put over most existing floors, saving installation time. The process is so simple that many homeowners install laminate themselves.

6. If anyone in your family suffers from bad allergies, laminate flooring is an excellent choice since there are no places for dust and other particles to become trapped. The underlayment provides a moisture barrier that not only protects the floor from damage, but also prevents mold from forming.

5. Style Variation. You can find laminate flooring in a variety of styles, from wood to stone and tile finishes. All of these are available in different colours, surface treatments, thickness and plank styles.

7. Subfloor Versatility. Laminate can be installed on nearly any type of subfloor, from concrete to pre-existing vinyl floors. When hardwood isn’t compatible with a subfloor, laminate is a smart option.

Ten benefits of installing Aluminium Windows and Doors

đ&#x;„°

luminium windows and doors are more popular in these modern days. It has proved its worth by having durability, strength and usability. The majority of people, though they wanted to have it installed for their plus points, they rejected it for the silver color. They had no great color options in olden days. However, due to powder coating material, they can be easily painted in various colors of the customer’s choice. People, who have fixed them with silver color in the past, now can repaint them according to their wish. Moreover, use of this material for doors and windows can eventually reduce the usage of wood. Wood is one of the favorite materials that are strong and durable and now aluminum is equivalent to it. With so many advantages in installing aluminum doors and windows, nowadays, people have come to understand the efficiency of this material and are installing them in their houses in large numbers. Benefits of installing Aluminium windows and doors RESISTANCE: Most of the other materials somehow or other have some type of fault with them. Wood will rot, the glass will break, but aluminum when compared with others is better in this aspect. It will not rot, warp, stick and rust.

glazed glass, which provide high security to inmates because they cannot break them easily. In addition, they can be attached with sturdy locks. This prevents thefts; inmates are relaxed from fear of window break-ins.

HEAT: In the past, they allowed heat to escape and so they were not at all so popular. However, this defect is being rectified by adding a thermal break. This, when combined with double-glazed glass covers the heat and also makes them more energy efficient.

COLOUR: They are easily available in all colors. Ranges of colors that can be used on this frame are numerous. Since they are powder coated, they are easily made colorful and can be made suitable to any type of design and decor.

SOUND PROOF: These are very effective in not allowing noises from outside. Likewise, sound from inside the house will not go outside. Modern Appearance: The look also is very neat and thin and so fits well to the modern outlook. The ultra-thin fitting suits any design and dĂŠcor of the house. STRENGTH: Though they look very thin, they are very strong material. They can be installed into the brickwork directly. In addition, they are easy to install into hard word sub frames. This is possible only with Aluminium windows. Others cannot be used like this. DURABILITY: They last for long years naturally since they are not affected with any problems like rotting and rusting. SECURITY: Normally they come with double

A STORY OF BRICKS I

n the history of professional construction practices, brick is one of the oldest of all building materials. It is also arguably the most durable, since there are brick walls, foundations, pillars, and road surfaces constructed thousands of years ago that are still intact. Today, bricks are most often used for wall construction, especially as an ornamental outer wall surface.

Burnt Clay Bricks

Brick Defined

Burnt clay bricks are typically sold in four classes, with first-class offering the best quality and most strength. These high-grade burnt clay bricks have no noticeable flaws, but they’re also going to cost more. When these bricks are used in walls, they require plastering or rendering with mortar.

Officially, the term brick is used to denote a building unit made of shaped clay, but in modern times it is used to refer to any stone- or clay-based building unit that is joined with cementitious mortar when used in construction. Typically, bricks are about 4 wide, 8 inches long, with a variety of thicknesses. Larger stone- or clay-based building units of the type used in foundations are usually called blocks.

Uses for burnt clay bricks include: • Masonry walls • Foundations • Columns

How Bricks Are Categorized

Sand Lime Bricks

There are a number of ways that brick can be categorized. For example, you can divide brick into the types used for facing (exposed and visible on the exterior of a structure) vs. backing bricks (which are used structurally and are hidden from view). Another means of categorizing brick is according to how they are manufactured: unfired (brick that is aircured) and fired (brick that is baked in ovens in order to harden it). Bricks can be also categorized according to their typical use: common bricks or engineering bricks.

Sand lime bricks (also known as calcium silcate bricks) are made by mixing sand, fly ash and lime. Pigments may also be added for color. The mixture is then molded under pressure to form bricks; the materials bond together by a chemical reaction that occurs as the wet bricks dry under heat and pressure.

For purposes of residental construction, it is usually common bricks that are of most interest, since engineering bricks are more often used in civil engineering projects, such as road or bridge construction, or in sewers construction. Categorizing Bricks by Raw Materials In modern construction practices, common bricks are categorized according to their component materials and method of manufacture. Under this classification, there are five common types: • Burnt clay bricks • Sand lime bricks (calcium silicate bricks) • Concrete bricks • Fly ash clay bricks • Firebrick 84

Burnt clay bricks are the classic form of brick, created by pressing wet clay into molds, then drying and firing them in kilns. This is a very old building material—the type of brick found in many of the ancient structures of the world. In appearance, these bricks are solid blocks of hardened clay, usually reddish in color.

Concrete Bricks Concrete bricks are made from solid concrete and are growing in popularity among homeowners. Concrete bricks are usually placed in facades, fences, and provide an excellent aesthetic presence. These bricks can be manufactured to provide different colors if pigments are added during production. Concrete bricks should not be used in below-ground applications. Common uses for concrete bricks include: • Fences • Internal (hidden) brickwork Fly Ash Clay Bricks Fly ash clay bricks are manufactured with clay and fly ash—a byproduct of coal burning—fired at about 1,000 degrees C. Because fly ash contains a high volume of calcium oxide, this type of brick is sometimes described as selfcementing, since it expands when exposed to

moisture. This tendency to expand, however, can also produce pop-out failure. Fly ash clay brick has the advantage of being lighter in weight than clay or concrete brick. Typical uses for fly ash clay brick include: • Structural walls • Foundations • Pillars • Anywhere that improved fire resistance is required Fire Bricks Also known as refractory bricks, these are manufactured from specially formulated earth with a high aluminum oxide content. After burning, these bricks can withstand very high temperatures without their shape, size, or strength being affected. Common used for this type of brick include: • Lining of chimneys and furnaces • Pizza ovens and outdoor brick barbecues Advantages of Brick Construction There are many advantages when bricks are used as part of the construction. • Aesthetic: Bricks offer natural and a variety of colors, including various textures. • Strength: Bricks offer excellent high compressive strength. • Porosity: The ability to release and absorb moisture is one of the most important and useful properties of bricks, regulating temperatures and humidity inside structures. • Fire protection: When prepared properly, a brick structure can give a fire protection maximum rating of 6 hours. • Sound attenuation: The brick sound insulation is normally 45 decibels for a 4.5 inches brick thickness and 50 decibels for a 9-inch thick brick. • Insulation: Bricks can exhibit above normal thermal insulation when compared to other building materials. Bricks can help regulate and maintain constant interior temperatures of a structure due to their ability to absorb and slowly release heat. In this way, bricks can produce significant energy savings—more than 30 percent when compared to wood construction. • Wear-resistance: A brick is so strong that its composition provides excellent wear resistance when compared to wood.
