Honoree of Sigma’s 2022 International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame We are proud to celebrate Mary G. Carey, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN, associate professor at the University of Rochester School of Nursing and director of the Clinical Nursing Research Center at Strong Memorial Hospital. A critical care nurse by training, Carey is a highly respected researcher, educator, and mentor whose work has made significant contributions to the understanding of ECG monitoring to help detect cardiac arrhythmias and myocardial ischemia and infarction, and on the ECG’s use in predicting cardiac events and sudden cardiac death. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, she has improved the detection of myocardial ischemia in patients with and without heart disease. Carey’s uncommon skill for promoting clinical research among bedside nurses and serving as a hands-on mentor for burgeoning researchers has solidified the academic-clinical partnership at the University of Rochester Medical Center and casts a vast web of influence across the health system and beyond.

Welcome

BUILDING THE NEXT NURSING LEADERS – LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY

Sigma member and DNP Executive candidate Linda Williams put her money (and leadership) where her heart is, building a hospital in a Nigerian village from the ground up, paid for through her fundraising and own donations. At Johns Hopkins, Williams is focused on improving diabetes education and management for minority populations, and in particular, African immigrants. - Linda Williams, CRNP, FNP-BC, DNP Executive candidate

“This research joins the increasing number of robotic studies in the promotion of care among older adults. The proposed research will explore physical and mental wellness among the participants of humanoid robot-led health promotion exercise. It will also attempt to explore the older adults’ experiences and examine factors related to the use/ non-use and maximum/ least benefit. In line with the 10-year Strategic Plan for Artificial Intelligence Research and Development by the Philippine Department of Science and Technology, this inaugural study on gerontologic health promotion is part of the establishment of the Advancement in Robotic Research and Optimization for Wellness (ARROW) in a Philippine university.” –M ichael Joseph S. Dino, PhD, MAN, RN, LPT, Johns Hopkins School of Nursing

“COVID-19 came as a surprise and disturbed life as we knew it. Nursing students experienced similar stress and anxiety as the general population. However, they still needed to complete their training as healthcare workers in training, which included exposure to clinical learning environments where patients with COVID-19 were being treated. Understanding their distress, support, coping and resilience will be beneficial for nurse educators, and nursing institutions, as such information may be used to put in place programmes and processes to support students more towards successful completion of the programme, while developing constructive coping mechanisms and resilience.” – Rugira Regis Marie Modeste, PhD, RN, NE, RM, Stellenbosch University, Department of Nursing and Midwifery
