Dear Students, Reap what you sow. I have been raised since childhood on timeless morals and proverbs and somehow they have become part of me. However, time and again, life threw me into experiences that made me wonder. Have these proverbs become obsolete? With the new fast paced life we live in, where everybody is running to maximize today with no thoughts of tomorrow, has life changed in a way that new paradigms have to be followed? I have often wondered. Yet 2014 is proving otherwise. 14 years ago, I followed a dream of mine and worked very hard to see it materialize, then I had to work harder to maintain it, and at times I had to work harder still. 14 years ago, I started PH7 with 3 team members. Today PH7 GROUP has 30 team members and is growing still. 14 years ago, PH7 published only one title and worked relentlessly to position it as a leading magazine in its segment. Today it publishes 4 leading titles of its own, 2 titles on behalf of other leading companies and a number of commemorative books and high-end company profiles. 7 years ago I dreamed of re-investing in myself, in my education, so I set out to pursue my masters degree. Between all the work and expansion, I halted my studies time and time again, but somehow kept my promise to myself and kept carrying on until just last month I defended my thesis to great applause. 3 years ago, I took upon me a new challenge to organize a yacht show in Kuwait that will create ripples across the region. Today, as I write you this letter, PH7 is overseeing the construction of the 2nd edition which is 3 times larger than the first and held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the Prime Minister of Kuwait. Yes, I have been working hard. For more than 20 years I have been working very hard. Long hours, periods of self-doubt, losses and gains, ups and downs, but at the end of the day. One truly reaps what he sows. So my students, when you feel tired or temptations call upon you, don’t steer from your path. Just remember, the proverbs that our grandparents taught us, the morals that our parents instilled in to us, they are and will always be... timeless. To many more years to come, God willing,

Zeina Mokaddam

STUDENT TALK VOICE YOUR OPINION

THIS MONTH WE ASKED

HIS WITHIN T SECTION

In your opinion, how can a Kuwaiti youth make his country proud? When travelling, how can a Kuwaiti youth promote the image of Kuwait?

26

STUDENTALK MAGAZINE CELEBRATES ITS 14 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH KUWAITI STUDENTS ABROAD STUDENTALK has set-out in 2001 to be the voice of the students, to trigger their thoughts allowing them the space to communicate and hear what the others have to say. In your opinion, has STUDENTALK been achieving its aim? What do you think of STUDENTALK’s contribution to students’ life? Hala Al-Qattan, 21 University of Malta Medicine Yes, STUDENTALK has always featured students from all over Kuwait and from many different backgrounds. It encourages the younger generation to be more outspoken, which is why students find it more relatable than other magazines in Kuwait geared towards older audiences. -STUDENTALK features a lot of local events, which makes it more relevant to students in Kuwait. It tells students more about their local community. Kuwait has so many emerging businesses now and so many new places, events, designers, etc. It’s great to have a magazine show what’s new and upcoming.

Maryam Al- Shammeri, 18 Carleton English Literature and Public Affairs. I follow up STUDENTALK on their website since I study abroad and honestly love that it is basically a combination of students in a magazine. And everything that can interest is there, even the latest music.

Noor Al-Obaid, 19 Leeds Metropolitan University Architecture In my opinion, Student talk has been achieving its aim in bringing students together and voicing their opinions and thoughts. Its a way for students to see other perspectives of common issues. Student Talk’s contribution to students’ life is informative and opens up the readers minds to issues that they may have never thought concerned them or applied to them. To me, that is the most wonderful thing about having a magazine like Student Talk, it opens up your mind to things you never would have imagined you’d be interested in. Maryam Al-Shatti, 22 University of Malta Medicine STUDENTALK offers the opportunity for students to express themselves regarding issues that seem important to them and allows people to find a common ground with any enjoyable occurrence in Kuwait. So, yes I think it achieved its aim. STUDENTALK is something that students might anticipate every month for updates on events, it’s a nice read and that’s how it contributes to students’ life.

Zeina Mokaddam Managing Director 14 Years of STUDENTALK...What can say? It’s simply over whelming… The way STUDENTALK grew, the way it witnessed generations of students graduating, the way it has kept its loyal supporters and attracted new ones, and the way it saw its team excel... It has truly exceeded all my expectations. 14 years ago, I thought of creating a new voice for the students; a place where even opposing opinions can co-exist respectfully and with an open mind, while creating an environment of tolerance and democracy. When I first started STUDENTALK, I was doing everything myself. Year after year I started growing a team that I can trust with what I have built. Year after year, I have been blessed by team members who have truly adopted STUDENTALK as their own… Meet some of the PH7 team members who never tire from working overtime, who give their heart to their passion, who share their life with the family that we are building together, and who create at the end of each month STUDENTALK, our pride...

Dr. Carol A. Ross-Scott, Vice President -Student Affairs, AUK

Dr Maha Youssri Al-Tagouri, Linguistic and Translations, GUST

It gives students a chance to “meet their peers from other institutions without having to go to that environment. Whether it is talking about fashion, sports, the latest college student concern, or even global issues, StudentTalk is the vehicle for college students to be heard.

They are very experienced and they motivate the students. I like this kind of medium because I believe that it helps them in university. It also encourages them for public speaking and help when the speak about themselves to speak up for themselves about their problems.

Anwar Salman Al-Sabah, Head of Student Life Office, GUST

Dr Janet Testerman , English Linguistic and Translations, Gust

STUDENTALK Magazine reflects on that is happening at all universities to people outside of university. It encompasses information about the youth in Kuwait and their community. It includes several categories like student activities, fashion, sports and cars. It gives the opportunity for students to talk about their activities. After I buy my coffee from Starbucks, I must pick it up and at least take a quick glimpse at it. The best thing about STUDENTALK is that it provides the information in a very simple way.

I would love to see more of GUST students on STUDENTALK Magazine . You have always been supportive of all students. The title of the January issue was very exciting. It seems that the magazine does take everything that the students say into consideration. I would love STUDENTALK Magazine to show how learning in class could be really fun and can be put in great use in the future.

STUDENT TALK VOICE YOUR OPINION

STUDENTALK MAGAZINE CELEBRATES ITS 14 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH THEIR LOYAL CLIENTS For 14 years STUDENTALK has been able to accompany the students in Kuwait through their university years due to the support of advertisers. What made you believe in STUDENTALK? Hisham El Murad, Brand and Communication Manager Fashion Division, Al Yasra Fashion. Aside from being a colorful and engaging magazine to flick through while having your afternoon coffee (I wouldn’t be happy picking up my afternoon cappuccino at Starbucks without one!), Student Talk has become an iconic object that embodies what it means to be a student in Kuwait. The magazine is constructed in an intelligent way; it manages to provide students with an array of relevant information from fashion advice, health, finance, events, world issues... while at the same time being largely developed with contributions from students themselves – it is the voice of the student population, therefore very relevant. The magazine allows students to communicate with each other in an open space, allowing them to discuss hot topics and see the community consensus… building a strong sense of community and pride in Kuwait. And this is the audience we have always wanted for DKNY and Al Yasra – young, fashionable, strong of mind, driven by wild aspirations, yet community conscious and ethically driven. Keep up the great work, and on behalf of Al Yasra I’d like to wish the Student Talk team the very best in continuing this great magazine...

Lisa Tahabsem, Media Manager, Senyar Marketing and Branding

Elie Zorba, Media Manager, Impact&Echo BBDO group Students have the power to focus on the present and the future simultaneously, this was an empowerment that was created through STUDENTALK Magazine. Students have the freedom to share their first experiences and encourage others to do the same and this is why we believe we can reach them through STUDENTALK.

Aziz Al-Asmar, Marketing Manager, Hassan’s Opticians Divisions: Hassan’s Optician, Hassan’s Hearing Aid, Hassan’s Jewellery, EYE BOUTIQUE Several reasons made me believe in Student Talk: - The Strong concept, by being accessible among University Students beside a proper distribution Channels. - Owned by a reputable and credible publishing house PH7. - Managed by a Professional Team: Management, Editorial, Marketing/Sales Team. - It has a high viewership.

Since its inception, STUDENTALK marketed the print media with a new young target focus with a new flavor. Tapping into this large reader segment was one of the smartest moves I have witnessed through my experience in the market. It clearly reflects a brilliant vision of a creative group as PH7 and with time STUDENTALK was able to prove itself as one of the most considerable magazines in the market. The content was elevated and was improved throughout the years, which is another one of PH7 creative strategic planning. To add on top of all of that, with reasonable prices, improved content, good sales, and effective marketing and distribution approach, a strong team are significant factors that make us believe in STUDENTALK more and more.

ABDULHADI RAMADHAN FULFILLING STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC NEEDS

STUDENTALK sets the light on students with great achievements who contribute their hard work and creativity towards their own university. A great example would be Abdulhadi Ramadhan who successfully helped students through their academic needs during his presidential days at the American College of Middle East. While Ramadhan was studying Computer Network Systems, he managed to devote his time and efforts to enhance students academic skills. Let’s take a closer look at Ramadhan’s experience and how it changed him on a personal level.

What motivated you to run for the elections? First of all, the idea was encouraged by all my friends, family, and the college itself. They made me see how interesting the experience is. It was an opportunity to gain more knowledge and develop my personality. I wanted to enjoy such experience with its ups and downs.

When you won, what was your position and responsibilities? I became the president of the engineering society at ACM. My job was basically to create and monitor the ideas that would cater to students’ needs. Even though some people thought what we did was not enough, yet no one acknowledged that our main focus was on the students’ academic needs. We struggled in order for students not to stress about getting high grades or even passing their classes. This way they would enjoy the true college experience.

What were your achievements throughout the year? The Engineering Society achievements included a student hangout, helping students through their academic struggles, and providing awards for honors students to make them feel appreciated. These achievements had a great impact on me. They helped me hone my personality and taught me how to react through difficult situations. I see a new Abdulhadi now after enjoying the experience of being the President of the Engineering Society.

Did you run for elections this year? Why? No I didn’t, because I have a bigger plan in mind. Since I am graduating this year, I am planning to work for the KOC for three years, and then they will support and allow me to study abroad for Masters Degree. Honestly, I look forward to that experience.

Any last words? In the end, I would like to thank the college for helping us a lot. Also, I would like to say always be positive and aim to be the best. Don’t let anything stop you, you can do it!

BAHAA ELDIN EL-SAYED INITIATES THE NEW VOICE OF CBA STUDENTS

9outCBA is a radio station podcasted and performed by the students; for the students. It’s the first radio station for Kuwait University, College of Business Administration, aimed to entertain and educate students about different aspects in the Kuwaiti community. Multiple programs include important news as well as humors topics. Here is an interview with El-Sayed in order to know more about 9outCBA. We are a group of students who thought about this idea and we used our educational experience to improve and build this radio station. Everyone used their knowledge to contribute to the radio station. We have several students pursuing different university degrees in Marketing ,Public Relation, Finance, Accounting and HR. In the end, we used all these fields to work on the station. The first people to be approached will be the university students and faculty members, including professors and staff. Other clients include entrepreneurs of small business and any company that would like to advertise at our station. Our main aim is to improve our radio station, putting it in a high position through maximizing exposure amongst CBA students and increase advertisements and sponsorships. Also, any company should have a mission and vision for future guidance. Our mission is becoming a media power-horse in the education field to shed the light on our radio station and provide maximum reach and walk in the footsteps of other broadcasters so that we can have similar composition. Our vision is to seek out people that can aid our company or who can provide resources to further strengthen our position, and build a strong base of connections with people who can advertise at our station We are using several strategies to start working on our marketing, social media and public relation plans. Our service is one of a kind because it’s the first radio station that is broadcasted on a university campus. It will discuss the most important issues for the students and advertise for the events that will happen on campus. In addition, we will discuss students’ problems and ways to solve them through conducting interviews with students and professors. Another idea we are working on is CBA’s Got Talent. We will make a competition between talented students with a voting application to make the students compete with each other and make them more interested in following our radio station. It will be a great opportunity to participate and become more popular amongst the students. Eventually, this idea will increase their social life in a positive way that will with help them also to show their talents to the community. To cater for those who are interested in fashion we came up with “Beyond the Fashion” idea. It is a program that provides a brief information for best sellers cosmetics and clothes shops, the new offers and discounts, and the new store openings that will enhance the shopping lovers fashion experiences as it will highlight the new trends and will help them save money and time by informing them with the best deals and discounts. We use the Social Media in different ways to increase our followers through building fan pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram .The

Marketing Department, with a help of Public Relation, brainstorms and create plans to advertize for the radio station. They are working on a big advertising campaign to create maximum exposure amongst the students. We will use the Facebook and Twitter to provide background information for the radio station and how it started. It will also include information about the issues regarding students and their events in order to participate in their college life. In the beginning, we will include our contact information on the bulletin boards at every entrance in CBA in order for the students to reach us. Posters about 9outCba will be available in significant places on campus. Several t-shirts with 9outCBA’s logo will be created and distributed for some students and faculty members to wear to increase awareness. 1000 to 2000 flyers will be distributed amongst a three day period before airing in order for everyone to get to know about the radio station. After we create the necessary buzz we will focus on the radio station’s performance. The first broadcast will include be an interview with a famous celebrity in order for his/her fans to updated with our radio station. A collaboration with different clubs on campus such as, the sports, music and art club, will take place in order to for them to participate in our competitions. 9outCBA aims to create and maintain the best quality of broadcast in order to increase our audiences. Our future goal is to improve our business further and be more up-to-date with students. We will expand our network connection and audiences even more. In the end, after we gain the success we planned for by 9outCBA, we would like to perform for other Kuwait University colleges such as engineering, medicine and social studies.

Our service is one of a kind because it’s the first radio station that is broadcasted on a university campus

TAIBA AL-IBRAHIM MAKING ACCOMPLISHMENTS WITH THE FINANCE CLUB

Taiba Al-Ibrahim, the president of The Finance Club, has been creating effective workshops and seminars for AUK students in order to further educate them about the business world and develop their finance knowledge. The Finance Club has been known inside and outside of AUK as a premium club. With all their accomplishments, they successfully built a strong image even amongst the Kuwaiti Community. If you would like to know more about The Finance Club and how Al-Ibrahim successfully created such image, here is an interview conducted by STUDENTALK

What drove you to become not only a part of The Finance Club but the head of it? I joined the Finance Club the year it was founded, which was also my first year in AUK. I was encouraged to join the club for many reasons. The main reason being that I had heard of other interesting university clubs around Kuwait even before attending the American University of Kuwait. Secondly, many of my friends were really excited about the activities they heard the club intended to do, which they had told me about, and I thought the ideas were interesting. Lastly, my intended major at the time was Finance, and I truly felt that through this club, I could not only learn the theoretical important matters that I was learning in class, but I’d be able to engage with those theoretical matter while experiencing it firsthand and truly absorb all the information that the activities provide. I grew to love my major even more. Joining the Finance Club was one of the best decisions I’ve made, because it gave me the opportunity to meet new people, learn more about the business world through the seminars and workshop we’ve held. Also, how to manage responsibilities and tasks. Choosing the head of the club is a careful process done each year by the Board Members of the club. Each year the group votes for the candidate they see fit. I am so grateful to them that this year they chose me to hold that position.

What do you find most challenging about being the head of The Finance Club? I can’t quite say these are challenges, they’re more of experiences that you’re bound to go through. There is the matter of worrying whether things will get done in time to achieve a given deadline, whether or not people are going to enjoy and benefit from an event we’re working on. Also, even seeing to the needs of all club members being met is an aspect that needs to be considered. These aren’t challenges to us, as we enjoy working towards achieving these goals, but they are matters you’d need to focus on to make sure that everything is organized.

48

‫حياة الطلبة حوار‬

What is the most rewarding aspect of being in the most successful club in AUK? It’s very humbling, and it fills me with pride, to hear that AUK students have embraced the club in such a way. It’s also amazing to see all the positive responses we’ve received from those outside of AUK. We appreciate and cherish our relationships with other clubs and organization, and look forward to chances of working with them as well. It was a pleasure to be invited to join Tmkeen’s Youth Empowerment conference in November. These factors make it nice to see that The Finance Club of AUK is making an impact and leaving its mark in a positive manner. I believe we were the only club from AUK to get invited to this conference.

How do you think being such an interregnal part of The Finance Club has affected your future? Not only does my role continue to help me learn about finance and how the world markets currently function. However, the bigger picture is that it has helped me gain life skills that would definitely impact my future in a beneficial manner. The benefits come from developing basic management skills through experience, acquiring communication skills that now allow me to speak publicly without stressing way more than I should, and most importantly, learning how to work with others and coming up with a piece of work that would make us all proud.

What advice would you give to the future head of The Finance Club? Push the envelope and take risks whilst keeping the interest of all club members and event attendees in mind. Give the people what they want, everything you do is up-to-date, and keep it all exciting. The Finance Club has truly proved that it can make the process of learning about business fun, and the positive reception to all of our events from our establishment has proved this.

Do you have any last words for the readers of studentalk? Take part, make an impact no matter how small, but be there to participate and contribute to the creation of positive change & development.

It’s also amazing to see all the positive responses we’ve received from those outside of AUK 49

LATIFA AL-QALLAF

ONE OF STUDENTALK ESTEEMED CONTRIBUTORS What can we say about the energy and support that was provided by Latifa Al-Qallaf to STUDENTALK? No words can describe her keen collaboration and enthusiasm with us. To honor her great work, STUDENTALK wanted to set the light on Al-Qallaf in order to express our gratitude towards her.

What are the benefits of being a contributor to STUDENATALK on a personal level? It allowed me to meet more people and gave me confidence within myself. Also, it made me more interactive and gain experience on how to get information and make it presentable. It made me see and accept different opinions, which resulted in making new friends too. Personally as a writer, it gave me a place to let my passion be expressed and allowed me to connect with the outside world from my heart.

What inspired you to write articles in STUDENTALK Magazine? As a student I love literature and I was studying it for two years in High school then after I graduated, I did not have the chance to be connected to literature anymore and I felt that part of me was dying so I wanted to find a way to learn more about writing. I searched and I accidentally found Publish House 7 Group. Therefore, when I told them I had poems to publish and that I’m a writer. They accepted the idea delightfully making it seem so easy. This made me want to try writing articles which I generally enjoy it.

Why did you choose STUDENTALK other than other magazines? They showed me how can hard work that include deadlines and much writing can be so easy. They accepted me and made me belong to their community and their family. All you need to do is to be able to express yourself and be a good writer. STUDENTALK creates amazing opportunities for individuals who are interested in writing, editing and so on. Other magazines are harder to approach but STUDENTALK are very welcoming. They have such an amazingly unique community that is like no other in terms of their strong bond and their engaging environment. This makes you feel a sense of belonging that you might not obtain in any other magazine.

Who are your favorite authors? I love this question!Jude Deveraux, Stephanie Laurens, Judith McNaught, Johanna Lindsey, Lisa kleypas and Nora Roberts. They all have something in common; they can successfully convey raw emotions through their words and writing style; molding their readers’ feelings.

‫حياة الطلبة حوار‬

What instigated your passion for writing while studying Industrial Engineer? In life, I’m always think with my brain more than my heart. I believe in “mind over matter.” When I write, I allow myself to connect with my readers. Writing allows my heart to speak, to rule. For instance, if you personally know me, you would believe that I can be a little insensitive that’s because my mind is in control. But, when you read my writings, you would clearly feel the sense of romance and other flaming emotions that can play with the strings of your heart. I have been interested in writing since my childhood so my passion for writing was always there. And, I found that I have the ability to efficiently manage my time to write and study. Writing for me is as important as my future career, Industrial Engineering, because it brings me to life.

As an ambitious student, how could you benefit your country? Writing is a weapon. I use it as a way to introduce knowledge as well as a new way of thinking within the people’s minds. I believe that I can benefit my country by educating its people. Also, I benefit the people around me by proving to them that I’m simple but I try to be great, giving them hope and an example to enable them to preach their dreams. If I can, so can you!!

Why did you decide to publish your own book? I wanted to be someone else’s favorite writer. I wanted to make people feel what those inspiring writers made me feel. I wanted to hold their emotions within my palms, to make people’s dreams come true. My readers are my true motivation. when I was writing my book and uploading it on Instagram and on my Blog, I would look forward to seeing my readers’ reactions. I simply loved their reactions. Also. the fact that I could answer their questions and directly interact with my readers to become closer to them I think the fact that I am an English educated writer that is writing in Arabic specifically the Kuwaiti dialect, made them notice a change and made them see a different world that they can relate to.

Writing is a weapon. I use it as a way to introduce knowledge as well as a new way of thinking within the people’s minds

STUDENT DIWANEYA INVESTIGATION

FAJER AL-KHALIFAH 19, AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF KUWAIT, ENGLISH LITERATURE.

This term doesn’t really exist, and so it can be interpreted in many ways; some of you, right now, are thinking that it may mean a Kuwaiti being born in another country with a foreign passport, or a Kuwaiti that has perhaps lived abroad all of his or her life, or maybe a half-Kuwaiti half-foreign citizen. After reading the title and having your own definition, and after reading this introduction you stop to think, which could it be? Now, you’re waiting for me to give you the answer, and smiling at what you’re reading. After I’ve guaranteed your smile, I’ll tell you the answer: it’s none of the above. I wanted to use this term to describe the non-Kuwaitis that lived in Kuwait all their lives. The ones who went to schools in Kuwait and have been treated in Kuwait’s hospitals. The non-Kuwaitis that have family gatherings here in Kuwait, and pray amongst the Kuwaitis in the mosques. The same non-Kuwaitis are the ones that earn a living to help the Kuwaitis, in restaurants, shopping malls, even teachers and journalists! What about the ones living at your house? She has her own room: she cleans for you, she sometimes cooks for you, and she washes your clothes and irons them too. Doesn’t she help take care of the new born? Carries it, puts it to sleep, and clean it? Don’t you already consider her as a family member? And then, what about the guy that takes you around Kuwait, and washes all the cars of the house, and cleans them inside out. Isn’t he a good friend, now, being with the family so much in an important time of the day: in the car? Aren’t they both important people in the house with substantial roles? Don’t go away just yet! I want to talk about your friends and the people you encounter on a daily basis. All these kind, smiling faces, of Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis are equally friendly and wholehearted; whether a classmate or a coworker. Despite the difficulties non-Kuwaitis face, in comparison to Kuwaitis in finding their own job with strain, working hard to earn enough money, and paying for all the tuition fees, as well as health insurance, themselves. They still consider Kuwait a home. Some non-Kuwaitis have been born in this country, they grew up in this culture and society; some speak the Kuwaiti dialect fairly better than some Kuwaitis, and when they travel they miss home… and their home is in Kuwait. They love this country, care about it, and add it in their prayers. How can’t the country love them, acknowledge their hard work that they’ve dedicated to develop it, and consider them one of her own? In the end, I can answer all the questions raised with one sentence: by heart, they are Kuwaitis. They help make up part of the country, with their services, and even with their originality and different personalities. I am a Kuwaiti, and I believe a part of them is Kuwaiti too. Now you can smile again, for even though deep down you know this, it wouldn’t have occurred to you when you first read the title, and admit it, you didn’t expect the article to end this way: with compassion, empathy, and enthusiasm..

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD

VOLUNTEER WORK

ABDULMOHSEN AL-MAYYAS

HELPING KENYA’S COMMUNITY AND INCREASING KUWAIT’S VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE. A rewarding feeling will inevitably be obtained by helping others. Abdulmohsen Al-Mayyas provides a closer look on Kuwait for Kenya’s efforts and accomplishments. He mentioned the mutual benefits gained between the participants who were volunteering to alleviate some of the dilemmas that the Kenyans suffer from at their community. STUDENTALK wanted to encourage other students to have this rewarding feeling. Here is an interview with Al-Mayyas about the goals, aims, achievements and the ways to participate at K4K’s program.

How and when did K4K start? LOYAC established the Kuwait for Kenya (K4K) Project in 2006 to open a window for the Kuwaiti youth volunteers who would not otherwise get the opportunity to volunteer in Africa. To work on grassroots projects that help them evolve into effective young leaders for Kuwait’s future. K4K also aims to help Kenyans help themselves focusing on women and youth working closely with disadvantaged communities to establish sustainable projects that contribute to alleviate poverty and to give the people access to basic life and health services.

The saying goes “beggars can’t be choosers.” Well using that same logic giving the beggars the power of choice could possibly prevent them from having to beg Why did you participate with the K4K? I have been involved with LOYAC since its inception in 2002, it has always been a source of support and encouragement for me. I currently manage the International Programs Department at LOYAC, which oversees all international programs we offer abroad. I work hands-on with K4K because it was a program specifically designed by LOYAC and what we call an “inhouse” program. The reason, personally, that I was adamant to overseeing the project is because I do not believe in the traditional methods of charity— which consist mainly of donating money. I believe that this is part of the problem and not the solution. Statistics show that about 11 dollars, optimistically, out of every 100 dollars reach those who need it. My mission is to change that and make sure that money invested truly benefits those who need it.

What were the projects that you worked on with K4K? I have overseen 3 projects so far, a coir mat workshop, tailoring workshop for women and a water kiosk that provides fresh water supply to villagers. That, as small and insignificant as it may seem from our perspective, is a part of the solution. It won’t immediately provide them with cures to their illness or a better education, but what they earn will give them the belief that progress is possible instead of a false sense of hope they get from waiting for a savior.

62

‫فخر الكويت‬

What did you benefit from being a member of K4K? As team leader, I have learned to be very patient yet, quick on my feet to make adjustments. As much as we plan for projects, things remain very unpredictable and sometimes the plan must change on the spot. If I learn how to efficiently manage a team and execute a project under pressure in a place as unpredictable as Kenya, then I can come back here with the ability to do tenfold in my own country.

What are the main obstacles you have faced? Finding the right candidates for the program and the right kind of project to invest in there on the ground. It is a very challenging and it’s not for everyone. One of the biggest challenges I’ve noticed personally is that the people in Kenya are happy and content with what they have. They have accepted their fates, like an exhausted swimmer in shark-infested waters. They were led to believe that things cannot and will not change. We go there to show them that this may be their reality but it doesn’t have to be their fate.

Coming from a developed country with better-established entities, they get the opportunity to see how communities are built on a micro scale. They come back with greater insight on global issues and manage to see things differently on a much smaller scale that will assist them to better view the bigger picture in order to develop their own community.

How can others participate with K4K? Participating is easy! You just sign up under the Global Outreach Programs online via our website at Loyac.org. If you feel this is the kind of journey for you and you want to have a life changing experience just sign up immediately. K4K trips are usually during the summer, around July and August.

What are K4K’s main goals ? There are two main goals or factors to K4K; the first is the volunteer experience and the second is helping the community in need. Most people are under the impression that volunteering is not fun, but our aim is to change this general perspective— to combine between volunteering and fun. The saying goes “beggars can’t be choosers.” Well using that same logic giving the beggars the power of choice could possibly prevent them from having to beg. To allow them to figure out their route empowers them with the tools that money can’t buy and charities don’t always provide.

As a member of K4K, how can you benefit the Kuwaiti society? K4K’s projects present considerable opportunities for the youth in Kuwait to engage in effective community building and gain valuable insight to youth programming in Kenya. This 3 weeks program is designed to help youth learn about a different culture, take them out of their comfort zone and test them. They exchange views on youth related issues and involve in intensive activities such as construction.

VOLUNTEER WORK

SHERINE AL-BLOUSHI TAKING VOLUNTEER WORK TO AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL

The philanthropist traveler, Sherine Al-Bloushi, has taken extreme measures with the Humanitarian Affairs Organization in order to help developing countries in need. Cambodia, Philippines, Thailand and much more places where Al-Bloushi visited in order to provide health care, feeding programs and activities for orphans. As STUDENTALK considers this act as sincerely gratifying, we conducted an interview with Al-Bloushi in order to inspire our beloved readers:

Why did you start working with the Humanitarian Affairs Organization? I only started my journey with them last November. I attended the University Scholars Leadership (USL) Symposium, in Manila, organized by Humanitarian Affairs UK in August 2013, which is where I was first introduced to them.

Please tell us more about the Humanitarian Affairs Organization and how did you find about it? The Humanitarian Affairs, UK is a London based Social Enterprise that initiates and supports humanitarian relief efforts and development programmes in under privileged countries and communities. HA also focuses on building youth leaders, encourage and nurture them to become world-class citizens. They provide young people with opportunities to engage in humanitarian service, strengthen their awareness of diverse cultures, and develop a lifelong commitment to helping others by participating in relief efforts. They also have offices in Thailand (known as Humanitarian Affairs Asia), which is where I’m currently based. HA Asia are responsible for organizing the University Scholars Leadership (USL) Symposium, which I attended last year. I first learned about HA when our university (AUK) got the invitation to attend the USL symposium. Myself, along with nine other delegates flew to Manila, Philippines to attend the 4th USL conference.

64

A tiny act may be tiny to us but could mean a whole lot more to the person you’re helping What were the projects that you have accomplished up until now? Humanitarian Affairs organized a relief team to head out to the disasterstruck area in the Philippines, Tacloban City. We spent about a week in Tacloban and managed to provide help to the survivors of typhoon Yolanda (aka Typhoon Haiyan). We worked with several foreign NGO’s like The Red Cross in China, Korea and Australia at the UNICEF, and a local Rotary club to help distribute as many relief goods as possible to the survivors. HA organized a feeding program which was also a Christmas event that included a hearty lunch, goodies for kids and some Christmas songs at San Jose Central School in Dulag, which was also an evacuation shelter. The team managed to feed approximately 2000 children and adults, with the help of other volunteers. We also helped the local rotary clubs hold their feeding programs, which was a 25-day effort. Also, since HA plans to adopt Tacloban City for the next year, we’ve arranged for a rebuilding effort, where we plan on renovating a local school and a maternity clinic, which are both still operational but in tragic condition. Also, we are currently working on organizing a summer camp for the orphans in Tacloban, which will be held somewhere around April.

‫فخر الكويت‬

What are the future projects you are going to work on? Aside from HA’s projects in the Philippines, we are currently working on organizing the 5th USL conference in Cambodia. I am also working on organizing The Oxford Symposium held in Oxford and the “Creative Fundraising” NGO Conference to be held in Bangkok. On the side, the HA team visits local orphanages and elderly homes here in Thailand, where we hold a feeding program or just simply keep the kids company and set up activities such as field trips, sporting activities and much more.

How can any student join the Humanitarian Affairs Organization? They can start by applying for the next USL Symposium held in Cambodia from August 1-7. This event will give the students an idea of how the organizations runs and what kind of programs they provide for the youths to discover and enhance their leadership skills.

Why did you choose to help others instead of developing your own career? Not only is it very self-rewarding but it is also very eye-opening. It made me realize how small my problems are, and really teaches a person how to appreciate the good things in life. I’ve always had a passion for helping people, especially for people who aren’t capable of helping themselves. I am so blessed with the life I have, and thankful for it every day. However, I needed to step out of my comfort zone to really challenge myself and to know what I am capable of. I know I have the ability to reach out to people, we all do, so why not?

What are the personal/ work experiences you have gained through this experience? I’ve learned a lot of things throughout my experiences, and still learning. I’ve learned a lot about the different cultures in the different places I have been travelling to. I also now work with people from all around the world, and we all learn from each other, whether it’s in the office or just a simple conversation. Also, I’ve been taking up leadership sessions and attending several conferences. They’ve all taught me how to become more independent and has only made me ever so determined to make a change in the world. Reaching out to people has made me realize how grateful I am for the healthy life I have been given. My experience in the Philippines has made me realize how much this world needs people to lend a helping hand. It also taught me to never lose hope, and to keep believing in myself.

In your opinion, how does volunteer develop one’s personality? It strengthens their sense of appreciation, which I think is very important nowadays. A lot of people, unfortunately, do not realize what they have. It also teaches you how to empathize and feel for others. That satisfaction you feel once you reach out to people will only trigger you to do more.

Any last words for STUDENTALK readers? I think the world has given us so much and it’s time to give something back, whether small or big. A tiny act may be tiny to us but could mean a whole lot more to the person you’re helping. When you show that kind of initiative, you only bring hope into those who are less fortunate and you never know who you are inspiring. So, take action, be a leader and make a change in this world

RIHAM AL-RESHAID

TAKES A STEP TOWARDS MENTAL ADVOCACY Riham Al-Reshaid, an influential Kuwaiti artist, successfully connected her talent to helping others in the Kuwaiti Society. By working with the Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (FSRI), she decided to donate a percentage of her profit off of her paintings to FSRI to aid those with mental health problems. As she was blessed to be alleviated from her eating disorder, she wanted to provide support to those who are struggling with mental disorder. Al-Reshaid told STUDENTALK Magazine about her personal struggle, her work with FSRI and much more in this interview.

How were you able to connect art with mental advocacy? I’ve always loved art. It has been my biggest tool in overcoming obstacles and expressing myself. After seeing the success coming from my artwork, I felt like it would be a great opportunity to give back to the Kuwaiti society. I’ve struggled with an eating disorder for many years and have realized the importance of awareness in the field of mental health. I’ve been able to recover with lots of help and support; for that reason, I would love others to have the same opportunity.

What is your main inspiration that motivates you to draw or paint? I find myself inspired by different emotions I go through in my life as well as nature. I love using vibrant colors in my paintings. Every painting I paint has a story behind it.

‫فخر الكويت‬

Why did you decide to donate some of your profit to Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (FSRI)? I’ve received treatment at the Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute. The support, acceptance and understanding I’ve had throughout my journey in recovery has been incredible. FSRI is very involved in raising awareness regarding mental health in Kuwait and they have worked very hard to continue doing so. I wanted to provide them with the support because I really do believe in what they’re doing.

their experiences dealing with mental health problems. The more outspoken others are about it, the more help and support we can provide.

What are your last words for STUDENTALK readers? The hardest and most important step to take when you’re struggling with any mental health problem is to reach out and ask for help. There are so many others that may be going through what you are, you’re not alone. It’s not easy to recover, it’s one of the most difficult things to do, but it’s so worth it. Take that first step.

What are the current projects you are working on? I’m currently working on a series of mixed media paintings. I will also be giving speeches at schools and universities on the topic of eating disorders and recovery.

Other than art, how can other talents help benefit the Kuwaiti society? I believe that no matter what your talent is, there’s always a chance to help others. It takes a lot of effort to make a difference but it’s the small acts combined that produce bigger results. Find others that would like to get involved, or join in an organization or a club that already exists. There are so many nonprofit organizations that need extra assistance.

In the future, what are your plans to increase awareness regarding the discrimination between those with and without mental health problems? So many people in this society are still too ashamed to talk about their struggled openly. I would like to see more people speak out regarding

Triple A Offers Workshops for High School Student

Lamia Al-Loughani

is giving back to the Kuwaiti community through Triple A.

Lamia Al-Loughani, President and Founder of Triple A, is making Kuwait proud by offering workshops for High school students to become the future entrepreneurs of Kuwait. Triple A does not only provide educational sessions to incorporate high school students’ passions and dreams into an effective business plan, they provide a sense of direction for future guidance. To know more on how to participate in Triple A, their previous and upcoming events, STUDENTALK conducted a fruitful interview with Ms. Al-Loughani.

What inspired you to start a business that provides services for High School students? I have always been passionate about educating our youth and providing the knowledge that is necessary in order for them to achieve their goals in life. I believe that high school students are absolutely brilliant and innovative. They are willing to put in the time and effort into something they believe in, all they need is a little push and guidance in the right direction. That is why, I came up with the Triple A program, which is an entrepreneurship program that encourages high school students to challenge themselves and to allow them to embrace what their passionate about and incorporate it into a business plan. It is an ongoing learning process which I personally like to refer to as the “ pre-school of entrepreneurship for the big league.”

How can High School students participate in Triple A? The students can participate simply by applying online through our website www.triplea-kw.com, or they can follow us on our instagram account and wait for announcements on where and when they can apply.

Do you think you can expand on Triple A in the future to include services/workshops for university students? Yes, we are actually planning on expanding soon and hopefully in the near future there will be a program for university students.

Tell us about the previous workshops you provided for students? Triple A 1, launched in May,2013 and included 4 participants : The Gathering Bistro, The Breakfast Club, Solo Pizza Napulitana and PinkCoffee Co. Triple A 2, took place in October, 2013 and included 5 participants: Senyar, David&Goliath, Bellora, Solo Pizza Napulitana and Elevation Burger. The programs included a series of business oriented workshops, that allowed students to learn from their mentors personal experiences, and acquire new skills and knowledge about creating a business plan and project with the guidance of the mentor. It was a remarkable and memorable experience that is worth all the time and effort dedicated to such a program. It was a pleasure and an honor to have such a wonderful, promising and an inspiring group of students, mentors and staff on board.

‫فخر الكويت‬

What are the upcoming workshops for Triple A? Triple A 3, will be taking place in March, 2014 and will include a variety of workshops with a fun and exciting vibe for the students especially with the participating businesses this year. We have announced our participants on our instagram account so far such as: Pro Vision, Q8Balance, The Chocolate Bar, Marie Claire Magazine and Facile. Stay tuned for more announcements on the participating businesses for Triple A 3 on our Instagram account : @triplea_kw

How will the upcoming workshops differ from the workshops previously held? There is always an element of surprise during our programs and workshops.

Other than the educational benefits, what other assets that Triple A provides to High School students? Triple A provides the students with not only educational benefits, but with long lasting life lessons on the importance of building their character and understanding the process of how to get to where they want to be. It is our number one goal to always provide an added value to each and every individual on board. Triple A, not only focuses on the educational aspect of things, but on providing a sense of direction, clarity and vision for the students in both their short run objectives and long run objectives. The students, mentors and staff makeup a team and become part of our Triple A family.

What are the benefits that you gained as the founder and president of Triple A? The students have truly inspired me in so many ways, they have made me realize how much I love and enjoy providing a program which allows everyone to interact with each other, learn from one another and love and respect each other. I have also had the privilege to work with a tremendous group of entrepreneurs and individuals that have dedicated their time to the program and the students. Of course, I couldn’t have done any of it without the support of my family, and my staff. The Triple A team, has been nothing but dedicated, hardworking and passionate about the program from day 1, I’m truly blessed to have a wonderful team on board. At the end of the day, being a part of the process and living the journey with the students and being able to see what they have accomplished by the end of the program, is the ultimate reward for me.

Who were the main supporters of Triple A? The main supporters of Triple A, are my family, friends and the my team.

What were the difficulties you faced during the establishment of Triple A? During the establishment of Triple A, one of the challenges we faced, is educating the people and students of the purpose of the program. Like any other new business, it is always a challenge having people truly believe in your vision and what you represent, but we were able to overcome our obstacles and it was all worth it.

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD LOCAL BUSINESS

KUWAITI LOCAL BUSINESS

DANA AL-QALLAF

DESIGNING TRADITIONAL KUWAITI DARA’AS WITH A MODERN TWIST As February is a month where we celebrate the National and Liberation Day, there is nothing better to showcase other than Kuwait’s traditional clothes. Dana Al-Qallaf, Founder of ThreadsByDQ, designs Dara’as with a modern twist for you to look different and unique in special occasions. Here is an interview with Al-Qallaf to know more about how she started her business while studying Finance at Kuwait University.

Who was your main influence to become a fashion designer? First of all I wanted to give you a little background of how and why I started designing. Since 2010 I have started designing for myself traditional clothing such as Dara’as with a modern twist. Everyone started complimenting them and gave me positive comments. I was very motivated to keep designing myself Ramadan wear. My encouraging dear mother and friends have asked me to design for them that year. So first I have started drawing designs and buying materials from inspired looks I have looked throughout famous designers such as Emilio Pucci, Missoni, and Italian designer Kaftans. My mother, sister, and friends all loved what I had provided them from my skills. I woke up one day thinking why not combine what I have learned in my study years at the College of Business Administration in Kuwait University with a talent I carried along with me. I have started small with a small capital budget and invested in my abilities of designing traditional wear. I was very scared at the beginning because I thought that I would never make it to the fashion business in Kuwait at such a young age with minimal resources. Therefore, I started using the media for my marketing. I started spreading out the words and created a website and Facebook account to get my brand out there. More people came up to me and have noticed me at that time. At the end of 2011, I was preparing for my first ThreadsbyDQ exhibition. It was very intense as I spent 4 months preparing for it. Al Hamdullah, after my first successful exhibition I was very encouraged to continue doing what I do and I loved it. I set a vision and mission for myself and business. Ever since 2012, I gained more customers and became popular through ThreadsbyDQ Instagram profile. I found that advertising was the first step to being successful and then came the word of mouth from my lovely and such sweet customers from all around the Gulf.

Why did you decide that ThreadsByDQ would only revolve around Traditional Kuwaiti clothes? My fashion line is actually inspired by a modern twist and this is what keeps it revolving around tradition. I have made such decision because I found myself and talent through designing in that area. I mostly design clothing I would normally wear and add my own touch or a mark on every piece I design.

72

I say continue loving what you do and always find inspiration for your designs in places you have visited, arts you have perceived, and inspiration is all around you!

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

Have you ever thought of going out of your comfort zone by designing non traditional clothes? Yes, I have thought about it, and I honestly did not see myself designing non traditional clothing. As we all know, there are many and millions of casual and outerwear designers and stores all around town and the world, but there are not many young traditional fashion designers that have been successful in their area. And again I thank Allah for a talent I hold and this feature He have created in myself.

How can anyone purchase your items? My items may be purchased through exhibitions I hold or by arranging a meeting date by phone call. I have also displayed my pieces on Instagram @threadsbydq so people may also order items they like through Whatsapp.

What goals have you accomplished since the establishment of ThreadsByDQ? Threads have taught me so much in life. I have learned how to deal and communicate with all sorts of people and to go out there with my character and charisma expressing myself in my designs. I have accomplished the biggest goal or dream in my life since the establishment of Threads. Threads have always kept me busy ever since I was 19 years old. I have managed to study, keep my social life, fun time and maintain my business all at the same time which was not very easy. I have also started a fitness awareness InstaBlog (@fitnessknot) through finding myself while holding business. Another accomplishment I am proud to say, I have been a member in the Finance Club of Kuwait University for almost 2 years. Everything I have done has inspired me in continuing my success at Threads.

Should the designer create outfits according to their own influences or according to what society desires to? In my opinion, the designer should create designs in the desire of society and add their own touch to it. A designer must have single pieces that should satisfy at least 60% of whom they are willing to sell their designs to.

What advice would you give future fashion designers in such market with massive number of competitors? I would advice future fashion designers to put their heart into each piece they are designing and design something they would normally wear to keep their taste in each piece. I say continue loving what you do and always find inspiration for your designs in places you have visited, arts you have perceived, and inspiration is all around you!

What are your future goals? As a Finance Graduate, I am seeking to continue higher education and develop my fashion skills in taking classes or seminars in arts to grow bigger in the future. One of my goals is that threads pieces would be provided and sold in fashion boutiques around the gulf.

MANAL AL-KHALIFA

SHOWCASES “OHMYDRESS” COLLECTION AT STUDENTALK Oh My Dress collection from Meem Lable will make you go “Oh-lala.” Manal Al-Khalifa successfully expanded her fashion business from Bahrain in Kuwait providing fashion trends from labels that are not available in Kuwait. AlKhalifa told us her success story about the emergence of the business and check out her instagram @Ohmydress for the upcoming collection.

Aliss Dress

Why did you choose to expand your business from Bahrain to Kuwait? Since we opened our store “Avenue Collection” in Bahrain several years ago we noticed that many of our customers are from places outside of Bahrain. Mainly from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Naturally after having moved to Kuwait myself, I always wanted to start up another business here and bring the collections to my customer instead of having the customer travel to find our collections there and so we began in Kuwait under a new name “Oh My Dress”

What is the difference between the Bahraini and the Kuwaiti customer? The Bahraini customer is into classic elegance and safe choices when selecting their wardrobe. The Kuwaiti customer is more daring and a risk taker when it comes to fashion. Their style is more avante garde!

How does Oh My Dress differ from any other online outlet?

Josephine Dress 74

What makes us different is that our business stems from a physical retail based store with years of experience in the fashion industry. The labels we carry are mostly unavailable in the GCC region or if available elsewhere we would have been the first to introduce them to the market. We also introduce new designers regularly to keep things interesting. At OMD we pride ourselves in being the exclusive distributor of UK based Meem Label which is only available through us in Kuwait.

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

How do you choose your collection for your customers? It’s not easy to satisfy a variety of palates, as each individual is unique and different. Experience in the fashion buying field for the GCC market has helped me identify styles that fit with the current local trend demands.

Why did you decide to have your own business? My reasons for starting out in Kuwait are completely different than when I started in Bahrain. After working several years in the fashion industry, I developed strong alliances with some designers. One of them was the founder of UK based Meem Label who encouraged me to start out in Kuwait and well here we are now!

Other than Kuwait and Bahrain, do you plan on distributing your collection to other Arab countries? We already ship worldwide from Kuwait and Bahrain.

In what ways do you increase your interaction with the customers? Social media like Instagram is the main mean of interaction; in addition, to participating in selective expos which helps us connect with all sorts of amazing people!

What would you like to tell STUDENTALK readers about your upcoming collection?

Anderson Smock

We are currently working with our core brand Meem Label to bring you an endless list of must-haves for the new season so get ready to be blown away!

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD TIPS FOR BETTER YOU

Love Kuwait, Love it Right!

Yes I know you do love Kuwait. Maybe love is a small word compared to what you feel about your nation that you grew up in. However, is it enough to keep saying “I love Kuwait” and paint your face with the colors of the flag? Yes, celebration is definitely fun and it units people together. However, loving Kuwait should never take place on February 25th and 26th. You should love Kuwait all year long! That’s why STUDENTALK presents to you with tips to be patriotic through the whole year:

1 2 3 4 76

You’re an ambassador. Yes, you represent Kuwait, everywhere you go, every action you take it is directly connected to everyone in Kuwait. Keep that in mind when you take a trip to Malaysia or London. People living abroad do not know much about Kuwait, therefore you must give them best representation and attitude about Kuwait, make them want to visit and know more about Kuwait. Watch the news. Know what is happening in Kuwait, but watching is not enough, you should act upon it as well. If you heard that there are several problems try to discuss them with friends and family in order to be more involved with Kuwait’s affairs. Vote! Yes, every vote counts. But don’t vote because you’re uncle brother’s friend is being elected. Vote for the person with the qualifications and goals that complements what Kuwait needs the most at the moment. Get to know what each candidate did in the past years and what he/she is planning for the present and future of Kuwait. You must consider long term goals! Volunteer. Kuwait needs you! There are several humanitarian and environmental organizations in Kuwait that seek volunteers to help. Beach cleanup, animal cruelty, special needs, and women’s rights are

what you can start with. Do not say you have no time because university is time consuming. Give Kuwait some of your time too. After all, it is the country you were raised in.

5 6

Promote equality. Does “divide and conquer” sound familiar to you? A nation becomes stronger when its people stick together by ignoring their differences and disseminating the similarities. It was the successful strategy that was implemented during the Gulf War and it should be always maintained. Create interactive activities! One way to promote equality is by creating events for everyone in Kuwait to participate. The more people are involved with what is happening in Kuwait, the more everyone will be reminded of how much they appreciate Kuwait. There is nothing greater than celebrating Liberation Day and Independence Day with friends and family at the “Maseera” holding the Kuwaiti Flag proudly and wearing the funky Kuwaiti flag hats. Yet, you must keep in mind that loving Kuwait is not once a year, it should be every day, every hour, and every minute. Happy Liberation and Independence Day Kuwait, we love you!

FEATURE TELECOM

BEHIND THE SCENES FROM WATANIYA TELECOM Wataniya Telecom is the first private telecom operator in Kuwait established in 1999. Wataniya is proud of its diverse culture and its Kuwaiti identity. Khalid Al-Qabandi, Telecommunication Engineering- Radio Network Quality, and Abdullah Safar, Technical Specialist, are young Kuwaitis who choose Wataniya to help them build their career path. STUDENTALK Magazine met with the distinguished employees in order to get to know more about their experience.

Why did you choose to join Wataniya? And how many years have you been working there for? Abdullah: I started working for Wataniya back in 2009 right after I graduated from Kuwait University with a Bachelors of Computer Science. I had set my goal and made my decision to join the telecom sector and Wataniya was my first choice. Khalid: Wataniya was my first job after I graduated 3 years ago with Bachelors in Telecommunication Engineering from Queensland University of Technology, Australia. I had to make my decision of whether I want to do my masters, or acquire work experience. I chose to work with Wataniya to get the required experience before joining a masters’ program. The job I was offered at Wataniya exactly matched what I studied in university which is what I loved the most.

Tell us about Wataniya as an employee working there? Abdullah: At Wataniya, We are one big family. Our colleagues are like our brothers and sisters and we care for like our own families. We all come from different backgrounds and cultures, however we appreciate and respect these differences and we learn from each other. There are many chances for employees to grow and learn more within the company as opportunities are always there to work with other departments. Khalid: Customers are our main concern at Wataniya. Their satisfaction is our happiness as employees. We work hard every day to ensure that our customers are very happy with the products and services we offer them. We believe that our love and care for each other as colleagues will reflect on our customers’ happiness and satisfaction.

Wataniya Telecom is part of a fast changing and growing telecom industry. What experience did you gain from Wataniya? Khalid: Working in a diverse environment provides a rich experience as there are many different lessons to learn. Commercial awareness, problem solving, negotiation, persuasion and confidence are all skills that I am currently learning at Wataniya. In addition, there are many cross functional tasks that we did with other departments in the company which had me exposed to other expertise and knowledge within the company. Abdullah: Leadership, team building, communication and organization skills are added to my 4 years experience at Wataniya. The fast pace nature of the telecom industry is challenging due to the rapid changes in the technology business. For that, we have learned to work under great pressure and achieve great results within a short period of time. Wataniya encourages us

80

to keep up with the challenges, in order to be in the lead. One of the great opportunites we have got from Wataniya is that myself and Khalid have been promoted by the company to join the Global Youth Summit: BYND 2015 which took place in Costa Rica last September. The Youth Delegation from the MENA region included young developers, innovators and engineers, as well as aspiring leaders from a diverse range of communities. It also included people who have made an impact in their community and who have ideas about how to change their world for the better. It also consisted of workshops to exchange knowledge and competitions to excel in innovation in technology.

Khalid, you have recently launched a new campaign promoting your network. Tell us the story behind it? We have lately launched a campaign focusing on our newly updated network. We proudly announced that our network is the most advanced in Kuwait today. According to Omnitele, an independent telecommunications engineering and consulting company based in Helsinki, Finland, Wataniya’s network competes with international telecom service providers by utilizing the U900 technology which provides the best indoor coverage. We have modernized our network to follow the highest and latest international standards and quality with an investment of $ 400 million. We wanted our customers to feel the difference and try it themselves. Therefore, we have launched the network campaign to convey that Wataniya has the most advanced network in Kuwait. We want to provide the best experience to our customers and enhanced services given to them. One of our main strategies is to be as transparent as possible with our customers through the messages and advertisements we deliver to them. We believe that our relationship with our customers must be built on trust and honesty. One great way we celebrated the completion of the modernization project of our network was hosting Google for the first time in Kuwait. We have also celebrated this great accomplishment with our project partners Huawei and Ericsson in another brilliant event.

Many of your customers are young people and students. How can they benefit of these changes in the network? Khalid: our advanced new network is now offering customers great network coverage indoor. For example, if you are in a basement car park or in an elevator, your line will not be disconnected and you will enjoy the network coverage. The U900 technology is utilized to make customers’ lives easier and keep them satisfied by providing high indoor penetration. It is

characterized by its ability to penetrate concrete, wood or water. Furthermore, customers can now enjoy the high speed internet we offer through our 4G/LTE internet services across Kuwait. Wataniya has tailored many offers for its customers to enjoy this service at its best. Our student customers can benefit from these offers as they are affordable and convenient.

As young Kuwaitis, what advise can you give to young people of Kuwait when choosing their career? Abdullah: With so many graduates now in the market, employers will look for skills and work experience which will make you stand out from the crowd. Start building them now or work on what you’ve got so you are ready to impress the recruiters Employers such as Wataniya emphasize on finding candidates with the right

skills and competencies for their organizations. My experience in Wataniya for the past 4 years was incredible as I have learned so many skills and have been part of competitions, seminars, workshops and so much more training classes. Khalid: Depending on the career sector and profession you choose to work in, there could be very specific skills, abilities and knowledge needed to do the job. These are often overlooked by candidates, but this criteria recruitment professionals want to see evidence of. Therefore, graduates should set their goals and be prepare for the job they want. I recommend young graduates to join the telecom sector if they would like to gain good work experience in a diverse job with no routine they can learn from and grow with. Wataniya provides its employees many opportunities to excel and exceed.

HOME CENTRE ANNOUNCES 3 ROOM MAKEOVER WINNERS FROM KUWAIT In the three years since its inception, the popularity of the Home Centre Room Makeover Contest has grown exponentially in the region, both for the novelty of the concept and the opportunity it provides to winners to ‘refresh’ their homes and lives. This year’s edition of Home Centre Room Makeover Contest took on the challenge of recreating rooms to articulate the individual personalities of participants. The contest received an overwhelming response both in terms of entries as well as the final voting for winners. Here is a special coverage from STUDENTALK Magazine about the winners and the makeover designs by Home Centre:

The winners from Kuwait were Rahaf Abdulhadi Jaber, a Kuwaiti mother who entered the contest for a reformation of her daughter’s room who wanted to turn it into a little den fit for a princess. Ghulam Ahmed Kaanchwala, an Indian expatriate in Kuwait, won a makeover for his living room; while Egyptian bachelor Majdi Ahmed Jomaa got his pad transformed into a honeymoon haven to welcome his new bride. For Rahaf, nothing is more important than her 4 year old daughter’s happiness. As Rahaf’s daughter loves fairytales, princesses, and all things pink, we naturally decided to give the room a theme that incorporated it all. The walls were shaded with candy stripes in two shades of pink, her favorite color. We then selected our Happy Daisy furniture set, which comes complete with a purple bed, bookshelf, wardrobe and study desk. The second place winner, Gulham wished to have a living room that was warm, welcoming and reflected his personality. To give the room a mature and stylish look, we selected a neutral wall color contrasting with bolder furniture pieces. The vibrant Avila corner sofa set was used to brighten up the room, and we added to that a pair of Shantu nest of tables, a Flux TV unit, in dark wood. We used mixed patterns and textures on the furniture and accessories to give depth and warmth. The Golden Hues art frames and the decorative wall art styled by our in-house stylist were eyecatching design elements to liven up the room.

Available at all Home Centre stores – Al Rai, Shuwaikh, Awqaf, Fahaheel & the Avenues. 82

As for Majdi, he was all set to welcome his new bride when he entered the Room Makeover contest. Living in a small space which could be called a typical bachelor pad. We needed to ensure that the room not only looked spacious and un-cluttered but also a comfort haven. We opted for light colours instead of dark furniture pieces. The Orazio bedroom set was perfect, the wardrobe and bed are mid-sized and ideal for more compact spaces. To give the room a ‘wow’ factor, we chose wall stickers and patterned them according to the signature styles of designer Jonathan Adler. To create a contrasting effect, we painted the walls a shade of dark brown to make the wall decal pattern stand out. Expert stylists from Home Centre redesigned the rooms of the winners according to the tastes, attitudes and needs of the occupants. Each makeover was completed in a single day. The Home Centre makeovers were accomplished using the latest range of products, integrating contemporary trends in interior design, keeping in mind maximum utilization of space and functionality. All elements of fine interiors, from colours and lighting to furniture and accessories were stylized, providing the winning rooms with a fresh lease of life.

Introduce yourself to the readers My name is Sulaiman Al-Banai. I’m 22 years old and I’m a Senior at the American University of Kuwait.

What is your talent? My talent is singing it has been my passion ever since infancy.

How did you develop your talent? I have always loved singing but I have always been shy about singing in public. Since I joined AUK, I started taking music voice lessons, which not only did it help further develop my singing techniques but it also increased myself confidence which allowed me to be able to sing in public. After that I was able to sing in different venues, one of them is Isma3ni Event that was held in discovery mall.

What are your future plans? My future plans right now are to graduate from AUK and hopefully get my Masters Degree in a couple of years while continuing to perform here and there.

Did you encounter any obstacles? I wouldn’t call them obstacles, I would call them lack of opportunities. There just aren’t a lot of places that singers can just go to and sing, with the exception of Isma3ni Open Mic nights. I’ve found this to be especially difficult for English singers. There are a lot of talented singers here in Kuwait and It’s a shame that their talents aren’t being put into use.

Who supported your talent? I have friends and family that have always supported me and I’m beyond thankful for all their support.

Any last words for the readers? It is always better to take your time and remember to always develop your own talent!

Introduce yourself to the readers My name is Guled Hassan, currently in university and working on future prospects.

What is your talent? I consider singing to be my talent, nothing gives me such fulfilment than singing, whether it’s too an audience or singing to a song on the radio.

How did you develop your talent? I’ve been lucky enough to work in a recording studio with other vocal talents which gave me a sense of my capabilities and I did join a few choir groups over the years which helped in learning new techniques. However getting up on stage and performing in front of an audience has made me develop so much more as a vocalist, talent shows and open mic nights here in Kuwait and aboard.

What are your future plans? My near future plans are to recorder an original set list (mix tape). I have written a few original song that I’d like to complete that would express who I am as a singer and my experience I’d like to share.

Did you encounter any obstacles? I believe nothing you love comes easy so yes I did encounter few obstacles but I see them challenges. For example not having many places here that allow you to perform makes it a little difficult. Also self confidence takes a toll every once in a while and has been an obstacle in the past.

Who supported your talent? My family we’re always supportive & my friends as well. Especially when they would listen and give me their opinion on original songs of mine, even encourage me to perform at events when I would be procrastinating.

Any last words for the readers? If you love to sing, then sing your heart out. Don’t ever shy away cause you never know what your voice might mean to another. Are you a student in Kuwait with a talent that deserves to be seen? If so then here is your chance, STUDENTALK wants you! Email us at info@ph7-kw.com

TALENTS

R E N WIN HISHAM AL-NASSER The Most Talented Competition For January 2014 STUDENTALK sends its esteemed congratulations to Hashim Al-Nasser for winning STUDENTALK Talent Competition for the January Issue. If you want to dig deeper and know more about Al-Nasser’s experience with composing music, singing covers and playing the guitar, then keep reading this page.

How did you embark on your musical experience? Originally I borrowed a friend’s guitar in 2003 and taught myself how to play. Since then I’ve been in a number of bands and have written a bunch of material for both my blues-rock band ‘Jelly Shot’ and my solo experimental project ‘Jivan’.

What obstacles can stem your talent in such restricted society? Being a musician, obstacles are a large part of what we do. The stigma that comes with being a musician makes things difficult in the long run as far as people’s perceptions of who you are and what you do. The biggest obstacles I have faced are those of lack of acceptance and lack of support.

Who would you like to express your gratitude for developing your talent? Thankfully I have a very supportive family and group of friends who have always pushed me to strive for far more than I had dreamed of. Along with them of course are the other local musicians and music establishments around Kuwait including Kuwait-Music (now Engage) and the people at Bayt Lothan who have made great strides in making music a lot more prevalent in Kuwait and helping musicians like myself be heard and accepted.

What words of encouragement would you provide to STUDENTALK readers? Music is an international language that everyone hears but few people understand. I believe everyone should try their hand at playing music and be supportive of everyone else who does the same even if they don’t understand it at first. It can bring everyone together one way or another and with that it can help bring communities together and make life that much better. Please head over to my website www.hashimalnasser.bandcamp.com and check out what music I have to offer to those who are willing to listen.

University Students Visit Noor Clinic Noor Clinic known for its specialized services for women’s needs and their family, it’s a polyclinic that includes dermatology, venereology and Andrology - Family Medicine - Dental - Laser and Aesthetic Medicine departments/clinics. Dana Al-Qallaf and Amira Mohammed visited Noor Clinic to be more familiar with two significant services: The White Hollywood Style Teeth and Laser Hair Removal Treatment. They had the opportunity to know more about each treatment in order to look nature and great at all times. As a nice gesture from Noor Clinic, Al-Qallaf and Mohammad will receive a voucher for Laser Hair Removal and Teeth Whitening. Dr. Mohamed Fouad, Dentist , Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, explained to Dana and Amira about causes of teeth staining, how to prevent them, and two types of Teeth Whitening: Laser Whitening and Home Whitening Kit. Dr. Fouad said that in order to have white teeth, first you have to understand the nature of the teeth and the causes of teeth staining. Our teeth are made up of long tubes of white calcium crystals. It is widely accepted to have teeth as white as the ‘whiteness of your eyes’. There are 2 types of teeth staining; our teeth could be stained from outside or from inner surface of these tubes. The outer surface stains are due to plaque accumulation which becomes hard after sometime (around 2 weeks) and turns brown with coffee and smoking. Thus it is hard to remove the stains with regular brushing at home. To treat such stains you need professional scaling and polishing by the dentist. The other cause of teeth staining is from the inside of the tubules which needs whitening gel to be applied within them. Mainly ‘hydrogen peroxide’ is used to treat such cases. There are 2 types of whitening, depending on the strength of the gel. ‘Laser Whitening’ which is a professional strong gel that is activated with laser which should be applied by your dentist. It is applied for 45mins and can be repeated only after 6 months of the procedure. The other type is the low strength gel and that comes in various forms in the market. The most common form is ‘Home Whitening Kit’ that kind is applied on the teeth in a plastic shell and worn overnight or at least for 6 hours every day for 2 weeks. The other types are like whitening strips or whitening pens that less commonly used and this treatment can be repeated each month until you have a satisfied result. In my opinion mixing the ways is very effective, make ‘laser whitening’ and Follow it with ‘home whitening’ and repeat every 6 months.

To learn more about Laser Hair Removal the university students met with Dr. Lida Daher in order to be further familiar with the treatment. The students asked several questions concerning the skin types and the side effects. Dr. Daher provided them with the necessary information to clear their concerns. She mentioned that Laser Hair Removal aside of what people think, it treats the skin along with the hair and it leaves the skin healthy and oily. She mentioned to the students the side effects that anyone might encounter such as itching occurring during the laser session, temporary redness, slight pain or tingling for sensitive skin people. Laser hair removal sessions depends on the hair growth cycle and how the skin reflects to the treatment because the treatment usually requires more than one session in order to “inactive” the hair growth, almost 4 to 6 session will reduce hair growth. It’s necessary for the patient to stick to the laser sessions and don’t miss any in order to have the best treatment. After the deep discussion regarding the students concerns, Dr. Daher provided steps before and after the Laser Hair Removal in order to make the process much healthier and easier for them.

Before • Avoid waxing for six weeks. • Don’t tan or face the sun because it might result pigmentations on the selected areas. • Avoid caffeine before your laser session in about 24 hrs. • Shave the area a day before treatment with a clean, new razor in order to make the area ready for the treatment. • Don’t use Oxygen for hair lightening. After • Avoid sun exposure and if you have to go under sun you should use sunscreen 20 SPF or higher. •Never use wax after laser. • Don’t scrub the skin. • Use medical moisture regularly. • Don’t use Oxygen for hair lightening.

TIGER WOODS MISSES CUT AT FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN Having only made the halfway cut by one stroke on Friday, the 38-yearold carded a third-round seven-over-par 79. Woods made two double bogeys and five bogeys from the 18th, his ninth hole. Gary Woodland posted a two-under-par 70 for eight under overall, one shot clear of fellow American Jordan Spieth and Australia’s Marc Leishman. When Woods made a welcome birdie at the par-four seventh, he removed his cap and bowed to the crowd, before closing with pars at the eighth and ninth. Woods has won eight tournaments at Torrey Pines, including the 2008 US Open, and had previously finished outside of the top 10 only once at the course on the PGA Tour.

WILL DERRICK ROSE PLAY IN THE SEPTEMBER’S FIBA WORLD CUP IN SPAIN? Derrick Rose has been named as one of the 28 players for the 2014-16 USA national team pool. ‘I’m looking forward to getting back on the court this summer and having the chance to represent our country’ Rose said ‘it’s an honor to play for Team USA and Coach K (Mike Krzyzeweki)’. That certainly implies Rose at least will attend the minicamp in hopes of making the World Cup team this summer as part of his rehabilitation and assimilation from a second straight season-ending knee injury. I haven’t really thought about it’ Rose said, his only public comments since suffering a torn right meniscus. ‘That would be a good idea, but I’m not ready, there’s no need’ Rose, of course, would have to qualify for the team first.

DID JUAN MATA COMPLETE HIS £37.1M MOVE FROM CHELSEA TO MANCHESTER UNITED? The Spain midfielder had a medical and has signed a contract, understood to run until summer 2018. Mata, 25, is likely to make his debut at home against Cardiff on Tuesday. “The time has come for a new challenge,” he said. “I am excited at the chance I have to be part of the next phase in the club’s history” he also added: “Chelsea is a top club and I have many friends there but you cannot turn down the chance to join Manchester United. I look forward to helping the manager and the team be successful in the coming years.”

LIVERPOOL’S BOSS BRENDAN RODGERS STILL HOLDS HOPE ON MOHAMED SALAH Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he hasn’t given up on signing Mohamed Salah from Swiss champions Basel despite his imminent move to Chelsea. Salah, 21, is yet to undergo a medical or agree personal terms, but is expected to move to Chelsea having held talks with the Reds earlier this month. Rodgers also mentioned that they will not give up on the Egypt midfielder. ‘The window isn’t closed yet so we haven’t given up on him, no.’ Rodgers said. Rodgers’s side advanced into the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth and Liverpool’s manager says he is still hopeful of adding to his squad before the end of the January transfer window. “Salah was a player we’re interested in and we hoped we could do a deal but as of yet there is nothing done on it,” he added.

IS JUSTIN BIEBER ON DRUGS, RUMORS OR NOT?

BRAD PITT REUNITES WITH ANGELINA JOLIE

Sources say that Justin guzzled a bottle of high quality sizzrup (cough syrup) and they also mentioned that he’s a druggie but Justin denies it by saying he’s a 19 year old guy and he’s on a break. Some people who are close to Justin say that he’d be laughing at stories coming out because they sure aren’t true. Several rumors broke out about the whole situation where Justin’s people has been urging to get some help to get rid of his drug problems and said he’s been shutting them down because he doesn’t want to get treated. Many say that Justin got the cough syrup that has actavis prometh and it isn’t easy to get it at the CVS (easier to get it with a prescription) or in the US, they say that The Biebs has connections and got it out of the US. A rumor has it all, what would you believe the media or the Biebs himself? The only ultimate goal they have is to get the money out of people to make them believe fake stories especially for someone like Justin because he’s still in the pop sensation of so many teenager girls and guys as well, they would still make stories to keep Justin’s name in the headlines.

Surprisingly Brad reunites with Angelina in Sydney, Australia after attending Producers Guild Awards. Prior to heading down to Australia, Pitt accompanied some of his famous peers at the Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills over the weekend. The hunky actor was spotted touching down in Sydney after arriving at Australia’s Gold Coast Airport and then into a waiting helicopter to reunite with his ladylove Angelina Jolie who is currently in Australia filming Unbroken, and their six kids. Brad would take every moment to spend it with Angelina because they’re was a period of time where she was, let’s just say a huge phase of her life that she went through depression and Brad helped her out of that phase and turned her into a better person.

SALMA HAYEK’S WEARING JT’S SUIT?

KIM KARDASHIAN DISHES ON PARIS WEDDING: KANYE IS ‘PASSIONATE’ ABOUT PLANNING

We’re all about women redefining classic menswear, but Salma Hayek in an actual man’s suit does not count, especially since this one looks like it’s straight off the Men’s Warehouse racks. (Sorry Saint Laurent) The Muppets Most Wanted actress may have been going for business person chic. But thanks to the ill-fitting pants, extra-long jacket and skinny tie, she just looks like a Wolf of Wall Street extra. The question is, why would a woman with one of the world’s most famously “womanly” bodies cover up in a boring navy suit? What would you go for, would you wear your husband’s suit and tie or will it make you feel uncomfortable? pieces are inspired by what we like to wear ourselves. It’s also made me experiment with my own style and try things I wouldn’t usually wear.”

The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star revealed that after she and Kanye West tie the knot, she will be taking his surname. Kardashian, 33, just got back from a whirlwind trip to Paris with Kanye, 36, where the engaged duo scouted wedding locations. Kim said, “I’m not telling you where or the date, but I think it’s kind of obvious that it’s in Paris.” Rumors are flying that Kim and Kanye have their eye on the Place of Versailles as a wedding venue after the couple was spotted taking a private after hours tour last week. “He and I had never been there, so we just wanted a tour. And, of course, everyone thought we were picking that as our wedding place and all of that,” Kardashian said. “We were just taking a tour. But we will be getting married this summer, hopefully in Paris. “When I said ‘hopefully,’ I didn’t mean, like, ‘hopefully’ getting married I meant ‘hopefully’ just this summer,” Kim added. As for the actual planning part, Kim shared that Kanye is very involved in the process.
