EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Nouf Al-Hajri nouf@ph7-kw.com MANAGING DIRECTOR Zeina Mokaddam zeina@ph7-kw.com LEGAL CONSULTANT Khaled Al-Kandari Al-Kandari Law Firm Creative Director Lara Homsi creative@ph7-kw.com MARKETING TEAM Acting Production Manager Rana Kaafarani rana@ph7-kw.com Dear Students, At a certain stage in my life, I was better known as a Feminist, and though I was then and still am defending women’s rights, I have grown to resent the adjective for all the bias and negative connotations it evokes at times. Defending women’s right is not putting males down or claiming gender superiority! Defending women’s right is not about asking for equal pay while women have been chosen, by nature, to be the child bearer. Being a feminist is not about asking women to be superhuman either! It is not about encumbering them with responsibilities at home and at work only to watch their stress levels reach an uncontrollable level and then blame them for becoming intolerable ! Being a feminist, in my opinion, is simply about defending Human Rights within the civil norms. If someone, regardless of gender, color or nationality, is having an impact at the work place, on a societal level or familial level, then that person should be recognized for his/her contributions and compensated accordingly. Regardless of gender, color or nationality, some human beings choose to invest in themselves more than others, some choose to invest in their career, family or social network more than others. Each person should be given the choice and will bear the consequences of that choice. It is the freedom to choose that I defend. It is the acknowledgment of one’s role that I ask for. At the end of the day, life is a full circle and will never be complete unless each plays his or her role, joining hands, and moving forward as one.

STUDENT LIFE INTERVIEW

UNIVERSITY CLUB LEADERS

ALAA AL-CHALABI & MORDI AL-RAJHI SGA MEMBERS, TO SERVE AUK COMMUNITY

The AUK SGA is known for its strong grounds in the AUK community. This year Alaa Al-Chalabi, President of the SGA, and Mordi Al-Rajhi, Communication offer, decided to take a closer step towards students’ problems in order to solve them. Their ideas for 2014 hit sky rockets; therefore, they plan to implement innovative ideas for AUK students. To know more about what they accomplished, and what are they planning to accomplish in the future, read this fruitful interview by STUDENTALK Magazine.

Why did you decide to run for the SGA elections? I decided to run for elections to give back to the AUK community. As I have been honored to be chosen by the Ministry of Education to earn the AUK scholarship award, I wanted to serve the students and try to solve some of the issues that I saw in my four years at university. I got the motivation from one of the last year’s SGA members that offered us a hand through our event about Syria which I really appreciated. These small things might not mean much for the person who helped, but it meant lots for me.

How far have you accomplished from the plans you created for the AUK Community? Actually, when my team and I planned several changes for the academic year, we hit it so high. Therefore comparing to our initial plans, we finished only 25% of it. The plans we had were able to change AUK to an optimum level, but dealing with the obstacles we faced with minimal support , and the length of the chain of the procedure forced us to slow down the progress and skip some projects and tasks on hold. The projects that were accomplished were the k-net in the diner and the credits goes to Jarallah Al-Shammeri, a field trip to London on the National Holidays and the Annual Convention for English majors in Kuwait. In addition to a winter camp welcoming the new comers, and much more. Others are still pending or under work process.

28

How does the SGA team coordinate together on each project? First, when a plan is proposed we vote on it and assign a member to write a proposal. When I set a project to be carried out and get it approved to be started by the University, the members who have the interest will be called, and the tasks will be divided equally to guarantee a good quality of work to be done.

As the president, do you find it difficult managing all the SGA Members? YES! Management is a very hard task, especially when you have such an extremely diverse team. In my team I have people from different age groups, nationalities and cultures, which put a challenge somehow to get them think in a certain way to achieve one task. On the other hand, having such diversity is an advantage. Sometimes when a problem pops up, I would take a decision to solve it from my own prospective, some provides a another prospective which is more feasible.

Are you planning on running again for the SGA elections? And why? I‫ ‏‬can’t answer this question now, but for now I say no. For the reason why is because the lack of support from all sides, and the lack of motivation and appreciation.

What is the difference between the SGA this year and the previous years? I can’t say the difference; student should have a say in that. I might praise myself and my team’s efforts, but people might see that as nothing, so students are the measure of satisfaction not their representatives. The changes that I witnessed is that we are extremely closer to the students than the previous SGAs. Every move we take the students are aware of which built the transparency and trust between us and the AUK community.

What are your last words for AUK students and STUDENTALK readers? To conclude, my last words to AUK’ers: we are all here to serve you, so whatever you want the procedure is so simple; come to our office, knock the door, say hi, complain, and we explain. I appreciate STUDENTALK team’s efforts for being too close to students by addressing their opinions, concerns, issues, and suggestions.

STUDENT LIFE INTERVIEW

ACTIVE STUDENT

Mohammad Al- Shimmeri & Aisha Al-Manea

SHOWCASING STUDENTS’ TALENTS THROUGH THEIR UNIVERSITY CLUB “TALENT” Mohammad Al- Shimmeri, the president of the “Talent” group and Aisha Al-Manea, the vice president, are working hand in hand in order to bring out the best talents from the Arab Open University. Actors, poets, musicians and several other talents are welcomed in the group in order to express their talents on campus. They used Social Media in order to bring strong talented students together and they are still on their scavenger hunt for more talents. STUDENTALK interviewed Al-Shimmeri and Al-Manea to know more about their strong efforts to bring these students together and about their big event this month.

How did a group with 8 different talents come together? We created an Ad on twitter and we hashtaged the university to seek new members in order to have a variety of talents in our club. We were surprised that many people were interested in joining our university club. They were very happy to know that such a club in the university was created to help them expose their talents.

What are your future plans to showcase those talents? Talents are what we are looking for in order to expand this club further and further. You might not know this fact, but people are fighting over and over in order to for them to expose their talents. The mission of our club is to provide the essential elements to showcase the talents in Kuwait. We will be the catalyst to bring them the audience and the stage. It does not end here! We will also provide the necessary training to elevate their talents and improve their skills. For now our future plan is organize events every semester at the university and to participate in other universities events. Our short term plan right now is to focus on the event that will take place in AOU this March. As for our long term plan, we will try to set the light on all our members and create a talent development plan.

What are the talents that you have in the group? An amalgamation of talents is what made us really call our club “Talent” as we encourage diversity of performances. Several students play musical instruments such as Oudh, Violin, Nay, Piano and Saxophone. They play different Arabic and English genres either traditional or contemporary music. We also have outstanding actors and poets. Two of our poets are competing in the STUDENTALK talent competition, please vote for them on www.studentalk-online.com.

As we always say to our team before our meetings “do good, feel good” 30

Is it possible to create a sketch with different types performances? If you would like to see how possible to include different performances in one sketch, please come join on charitable event on March 2nd from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. You will find audiences from different age groups because we created an outstanding team that will entertain everyone in the audience.

In what ways did AOU encourage students to develop their talents? AOU encourages students to develop their talents by allowing them to establish clubs and organizations at the university. They give us the opportunity to showcase our talents in the events that we will create. However, we would really appreciate it if they would extend their support by providing us with the financing we need in order to create the events.

Any last words for the STUDENTALK readers? The Talent Club believes that inside every person is a very valuable gem waiting for it to shine. That gem is their talents. We will polish that gem, refine it, and showcase it to everyone. Our role is to help them illuminate. If you have a talent and you want to perform please follow our Instagram account @AOUTalentGroup and our Twitter account @AOUTalentGroup. Stay tuned for the March event. In the end, we would love to thank STUDENTALK for providing us with this interview to in order for all the students to know about our potential plans. Thank!

The distinctive feature of the course is its hands on experience on how to construct business models and business plans through funding basics. Many other vital topics were introduced including: e-marketing management, virtual communication as well as all the new trends in technology to support the entrepreneurship endeavor. A trip does not drift by without some extra-curricular activities; the students got a whiff of some French dishes which they made themselves and had the opportunity to visit prominent companies and social events including a weekend in Paris with visits to the Eiffel Tower and Versailles Palace.

VOLUNTEER WORK

FAISAL AL-FUHAID PROMOTES SOCIAL EQUALITY IN KUWAIT

At a very young age Faisal Al-Fuhaid, a Junior at GUST, became one of the founders of Equait in order to promote for a harmonious, non-discriminatory society in Kuwait. Not only did he work on Equait, he is also a Global Teen Leader within the Three Dot Dash program, which is coordinated by the We Are Family Foundation. To know more about Al-Fuhaid’s accomplishments to promote social equality, keep reading this interesting interview by STUDENTALK Magazine.

Where did the name Equait come from? Well, back in the summer of 2011, I was working on a blog, which focused on human rights violations in Kuwait. My friend and I spent hours brainstorming possible names for the blog and when we narrowed it down to Equality x Kuwait, we then merged them together to form Equait! A few months later, I met with my cofounder Leanah Al-Awadhi during a visit to my old school and the rest, as they say, is history.

What are the vision and mission for your non-profit organization? We envision a more open minded and culturally accepted Kuwait where different nationalities, races, religions, genders and personalities are able to live peacefully within a more tolerant society. Our mission is to showcase our message of social equality through interactive events that both educate, entertain and involve everybody, such as walkathons, conferences, gatherings and workshops.

We can bring change to Kuwait, the only thing missing is a common cause. Why did you decide to create your own organization instead of joining a renowned organization? Well, at the time when me and my co-founder Leanah Al-Awadhi were starting to transition Equait from a blog to an organization, we’ve noticed that there weren’t many organizations that focused on tolerance and discrimination in Kuwait. As such, we took it upon ourselves to establish Equait as an organization in order to work towards a more social equality in the Kuwaiti society as well as combat bullying in general. Also, Leanah and I prefer to do things at our own pace and set our own standards to achieve so that we don’t feel pressured. Granted, starting up an organization without prior experience has its difficulties but we are growing and learning every day while also keeping our feet firmly on the ground so that we don’t do everything in a short period of time.

Who provided you with the necessary support? I am indebted to 3 people for Equait’s success:

Yara Al-Wazir, who inspired me to get into social work back in 2010. She’s always been there for me and provided me with the guidance, knowledge and support I needed to be who I am today. I know that if it weren’t for Yara, I wouldn’t be here right now.

Leanah Al Awadhi, my fellow Equait founder, she’s been the brains behind most of Equait’s projects and whenever I work with her, she constantly brings out the best in me. She was the main reason Equait is an organization rather than the blog so she deserves as much credit for Equait’s success.

Zahed Sultan, founder of El-Boutique and the EN.V initiative, as well as the rest of the EN.V team because back in 2011, EN.V approached Equait to be apart of the Voice for Success program, which helped us get more recognition. Back in December 2012, Zahed was scheduled to give a talk at a Middle East Partnership Initiative Alumni event and he decided around 2 minutes before his presentation that he wanted me to get up and present with him. The amount of faith he showed in me to get up and present with him meant the world to me. His advice and tough love has also helped me grow as a person as well. In that regard, he has played an important role in Equait’s progress

36

‫فخر الكويت‬

At such a young age, how did you manage Equait? Well, it certainly hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to juggle between university commitments and with Equait. Thus, it helped me improve from a time management standpoint. I would have to say what pulled us through the most over the last 3 years was our belief in the cause and our strong team spirit. Even through the tough times where we weren’t sure what was going to happen, we kept doing what we loved without the fear of failure. I believe the great thing about starting it at 17 is that you’ll have loads of experience heading into your 20s, which is when people usually start their own projects or businesses. That is why we don’t get too upset if we make mistakes now, as it is all part of growing and moving forward.

From the planned goals, how far did you accomplish? A lot. We have had the privilege of working with the Ministry of Youth Affairs for our latest Pink Friday anti-bullying walkathon, our 3rd in total! We have also hosted our own Model United Nations conference in February 2013 at GUST, the first independent Model United Nations conference in Kuwait. We were also apart of EN.V’s Voice for Success program (A Middle East partnership Initiative program), where the work of non-profits is showcased via social media. We have also hosted a football tournament in 2012 where each had to have minimum of 4 players each of different nationality. We have also hosted food giveaways during Ramadan where we provide Iftar meals for street workers working in the heat. We have also just recently started giving presentations at schools, which is a huge step forward to educate students about volunteer work.

Do you think that the Kuwaiti youth needs more encouragement to be involved in volunteer work? Definitely. What people don’t realize that if you want change so badly in society, you can’t rely on the guy next to you to get it done. It’s a unanimous effort by all members of society that believe in the same cause. Change will only come to Kuwait if the people show that they want change and that is by taking action, not just talking about it. Why do you think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. attracted all those people to hear him speak in 1964? Because they believed in what he said and they showed their support by standing by him and his beliefs every step of the way. We can bring change to Kuwait, the only thing missing is a common cause.

SOUND OF MARCH A BAND LIKE NO OTHER

In every STUDENTALK issue we discover a new, special group of students. However, never had STUDENTALK encountered students as passionate as the band Sound of March. It is a band made of 5 students, Abass Al-Mossawi, Ameen Al-Fakahany, Omar Al-Manea, Nawaf Mubarak, Bader al-Edan. Every single person in this band selfnurtured his talents, so that they can be a boy band like no other. They take up any kind of music and play music with originality and passion that their songs would enter anyone’s heart. And in the March Issue of STUDENTALK there is nothing better than to interview Sound of March

How did you come up with the name? Since our first show was in March, we felt like we were the SOUND OF MARCH.

Who inspires the lyrics for your songs? We all do. We segment the song so that it takes a little bit of all our hearts. Thus in every song you will notice there is a little bit of every single one of us.

In what ways do you work together to come up with a song?

Most of our songs are romantic and there is love everywhere so we are inspired by all that is around us. We make the music after segmenting How did it all begin? it. The most essential musician in the group is our drummer, Nawaf. He At the very beginning we were only two, Omar and Ameen we played gives the music an upbeat. Then comes our guitarist, Ameen. He connects like any two guys expressing themselves through music. Then Ameen had our feelings to the song. He is the reason our music can enter into the this idea we should play somewhere outside, like Bait Lothan. When he had souls of every single listener. However, the main two singers are the ones this idea Omar talked to Abass and they gathered, including Nawaf. We that attract all our fans, Abass and Omar. Last but not least is, is our spicy thought it would be a onetime thing, which it was. Until they re-thought teammate, Bader. He is the little flavor we needed to reach the best we can. and combined their love for music and came back together stronger than He always exceeds our expectations with the piano, making the melody before, and they wrote a song of their own for their next show. divine.

‫فخر الكويت‬

Where have you preformed? Many Places, Bait Lothan, Apple Pees, AUK, Olympia, and we have an upcoming event in AOU!

Usually boy bands end easily, how committed are you to the band? Yes we all are. We love and we will rock on, till we are heard everywhere.

Any Last words? Never give up, and no one can tell you who you are. Take us as an example, we achieved what everyone thought we couldn’t and we are one of the best bands in Kuwait and remember music is all about love, so listen to our music and fall in love.

Which song is Sound of March’s favorite song?

@SOUNDOFMARCH

It’s our original, Made it Different: I remember this year How lonely it used to be I was lost somewhere And my life used to be so empty But out of millions I had my eyes on you Since then all I want to live for is you You came into my life You changed it Made it different I love the way You make me feel everyday My words can’t explain my love I can’t even say Put I promise you that You’ll see it by the days I’ll say it now I love you And every other years You came into my life You changed it Made it different

MARYAM BEN-NAKHI, REEM BUKHAMSEEN & SUMAYAH BEN-NAKHI SUCCESSFUL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Maryam Ben-Nakhi, Reem Bukhamseen and Sumayah Ben-Nakhi exemplify the true successful Kuwaiti women in our modern day. Young and ambitious, they managed to become diligent students with high Grade Point Average at the Universal American School of Kuwait and they are among the five executives of the National Honor Society. This fertile interview by STUDENTALK will give you the perspective on women in Kuwaiti society, the students’ experience as assiduous students while maintaining a stable social life.

Who is Maryam Ben-Nakhi? First of all, I am honored to be a part of STUDENTTALK’S Woman’s Empowerment issue, and I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Maryam Ben-Nakhi, and I am eighteen years-old. I’m a senior at the Universal American School of Kuwait, where I am among the five executives of the National Honor Society.

Who supported you to be a successful student? My parents have always supported me and helped me ensure my success as a student. Since childhood, they encouraged me with gifts whenever I got high grades. Moreover, as I grew older, they pushed me to do my best, telling me that if I do really well, they would allow me to continue my Bachelors outside. It has always been a dream of mine to go back to the US and study, so this really pushed me to do my best. My friends have also encouraged me, telling me that, at the moment, nothing matters more than your GPA. They were always there for me when I needed their help.

What does it take to be an excelled woman? To me, being an excelled woman means recognizing the obstacles you will face due to the society we live in. It also means recognizing your strengths... the strengths that you have been blessed with by womanhood. Moreover, being a woman means being strong because as a woman, we need that strength to fight for what we believe in. When you’re a woman, you must take responsibility for your life and for what you want from your life. It might be scary and you might be afraid to do so, but you must go beyond that fear to define your womanhood. Do not allow somebody else to define it for you.

Do you think that the Kuwaiti Society encourages women to be successful? Well, in my opinion, I believe that there are people who encourage you to become a successful woman, but there are others who try to hold you back. However, comparing between what women were expected to be before and what women are now, I have noticed that the majority of Kuwait’s society encourages women to become independent and successful. For the many who have supported us, thank you. As for the others who belittle women, I suggest you use that as motivation rather than a disincentive.

I have noticed that the majority of Kuwait’s society encourages women to become independent and successful. How do you manage to become a diligent student while having a social life? Being a successful student in high school comes with a lot of patience, motivation, and determination. Unfortunately, in high school, there are so many unnecessary distractions. However, to ensure your success, you must learn how to deal with these distractions. Plan out when you’re going to study and when you’re going to go out with your friends. Yes, it may be hard and tiring to balance your social and academic life while you desperately want to end school with a strong GPA, but remember, hard work pays off. When you graduate you want to graduate with honors; you want to be remembered as a diligent school worker; you want to be known as the social and smart person rather than just one of the two characteristic traits.

How can a student motivate himself/herself in order to accomplish his/her goal? Primarily, the student must set a goal, one they surely want to reach. He/ She must make sure he/she feels passionately about that specific goal in order to finish it. At first, I was not as motivated to do extremely well in school. Nonetheless, by the end of ninth grade, I felt encouraged to leave high school with an extremely high GPA, for I have always wanted to study in the US. However, it wasn’t until 10th grade did I make up my mind about becoming a dentist. I researched a lot about the different colleges that provide that major and what they need to ensure your acceptance; I did whatever I could to make sure I could reach my goal.

As a successful student, what advice would you like to give to STUDENTALK readers? I advise people to set a goal they feel so passionately about. Knowing the reward you will reach at the end of your hard work will motivate you to work hard to reach that goal. Furthermore, as a senior with a weighted GPA, the most important thing I can tell you is to work as hard as you can from the beginning of your high school year, for one year can really affect your overall GPA.

‫فخر الكويت‬

Who is Reem Bukhamseen? Hi! I’m Reem Bukhamseen and I’m a senior at the Universal American School of Kuwait. I love taking photos and trying out new restaurants. I’m a purple belt in Taekwondo and I’m not that great at introducing myself.

Who supported you to be a successful student? I think everyone around me continuously supported me to be a successful student. I think my family would ranked number one, and then my friends and teachers.

What does it take to be an excelled woman? I think it takes a lot of motivation and dedication to be an excelled woman. It definitely requires an optimistic outlook on life and an open minded personality.

Do you think that the Kuwaiti Society encourages women to be successful? Over the years, Kuwait is continuously evolving and the society surely is encouraging more and more women to be successful, whether it’s by starting a business or working as a manager, it’s becoming completely ordinary to see very successful women everyday in Kuwait. Women today are offered top positions at work and have the option of getting into any occupation. I hope Kuwait strives for the better and continues to climb up the ladder of modernism and see that a woman can provide so much to the community.

How do you manage to become a diligent student while having a social life? Haha, that’s a tough question! I’m still struggling with juggling those two tasks, but I think I’m getting better at it by organizing my time and prioritizing my tasks. It’s no joke when they say, it’s all about time management.

How can a student motivate himself/herself in order to accomplish his/her goal? As a student myself, I think the best motivation a student could possibly have to accomplish his/her goal, is to see where they’d be in 10 years. Seeing where you’d be in the future and how you would get there, really pushes a person to excel “now” rather than “later”.

I hope Kuwait strives for the better and continues to climb up the ladder of modernism and see that a woman can provide so much to the community.

As a successful student, what advice would you like to give to STUDENTALK readers? Be sure to manage your time, make the most out of every day, and try to enjoy life while you’re at it!

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD

Who is Sumayah Ben-Nakhi? My name is Sumayah Ben-Nakhi and I’m a 16 year old with way too many things to do and such little time to get it done. I take interest in almost everything but have trouble committing to any of them. You’ll find me flustered a lot of the time, whether because of my discovery of yet another negative connotation to humanity or because there’s no good food around for miles. Open-mindedness is my main anchor, pushing me to positively impact the world I live in or I’ve lived to no avail.

Who supported you to be a successful student? I don’t really remember much of my early years in school, but I’m sure I wouldn’t be where I am without my parents. I do remember moments where my father taught us how to read a clock at a young age and my mother sitting beside me, patiently teaching me how to read and sound out the letters. When I got to Kuwait after being raised in America, Arabic and Islam required full help from my mother as I could hardly understand the language. Other than that, I’ve always been independent and sought solace in doing my work individually. Having teachers supportive of students learning in their own little ways was definitely a bonus.

What does it take to be an excelled woman? Answering this is actually quite difficult. I’ve always found humility and modesty to be things that put someone forward. For example, you wouldn’t (or at least I wouldn’t) quite place someone highly on your imaginary admiration list if they constantly bragged and fed off your attention. Being a leader doesn’t mean putting yourself ahead of the others, telling them what to do. That’s being a manager. Instead, being a leader means doing exactly what you’re telling the others to do, picking up their slack, and supporting them along the way. As a side note, shared self-pity doesn’t really empower you either. Trust everyone, but be weary of what might be ahead. Put your faith in yourself but include others in your decision-making. Constantly be fueled by your passion, no matter where it may lay. Being a leader means being you.

Do you think that the Kuwaiti society encourages women to be successful? I don’t like to generalize as there are a variety of people with a variety of beliefs in the Kuwaiti society. There are some who, unfortunately, try belittling women. We constantly hear of stories of “men” studying in the UK, Canada, or USA who come back telling fables of what the Kuwaiti women are doing there, trying to break the only thing that seems to matter about a woman in the Kuwaiti society- their reputation. Other times, women are constantly warned by those around them to watch their actions and how they speak as any tiny mistake can destroy not only them, but their sisters as well. In basic terms, the main populace of Kuwait seems to believe that a woman’s life truly begins once she gets married, her accomplishments not accounted for. But that’s disregarding the many successful women in Kuwait. There are so many to look up to, such as Noura Al-Ghanim, Safa Al-Hashem, Donna Sultan, and Rola Dashti. The only problem is their lack of recognition among the average Kuwaiti citizen. While women may have only been given the right to vote in 2005, moving forward in the positive direction is the only thing that truly matters.

How do you manage to become a diligent student while having a social life? A lot of people seem to think that I work in fast pace, while it seems more ordinary to me. Between Saturday classes and mandatory family gatherings every weekend, it does become a bit tricky to plan my schedule. That’s where time management and being neat come in; they both eliminate all the wasted time either by looking for something that I might’ve lost or misplaced or even forgetting about plans and homework. Having a social life and a good education is a lot like juggling, but juggling can be very rewarding.

42

How can a student motivate himself/herself in order to accomplish his/her goal? If you follow textbook-style and establish mini goals along the way, you’ll definitely be more inspired to continue on. Reward yourself once each minigoal is achieved (whether with chocolate, a new purchase, a game, or even just a relaxed day). This way, the distance between you and your goal seems much smaller and you are more likely to achieve it. Add a killer playlist or a small emblem to motivate you along the way and keep your objective straight ahead.

As a successful student, what advice would you like to give to STUDENTALK readers? i. Become independent. Even if it takes years. You won’t get far if you rely heavily on anyone and that person will undoubtedly fail you one day or the other.

ii. Question everything. If you don’t know the purpose of something or why it’s done, ask. There’s no point in studying if you only memorize without fully understanding. iii. Always have a class you enjoy alongside with your others to avoid feeling like your studies are caving in on you and you’ve no zeal to continue on. iv. Don’t work solely for your benefit, help others along the way. The whole point to an education is to better the world, not to put yourself on top. Succeeding while others fail is a sign of your failure as well.

There are so many to look up to, such as Noura Al-Ghanim, Safa Al-Hashem, Donna Sultan, and Rola Dashti. The only problem is their lack of recognition among the average Kuwaiti citizen

ALAA AL-AWADHI ALIA AL-NAFISI & FARAH ZAINAL

MERGING EVENT MANAGEMENT WITH SALON SERVICES Alaa Al-Awadhi, Alia Al-Nafisi and Farah Zainal are the rising star entrepreneurs who are working together at Pretty Petals Nail Spa to provide unique nail services. With their creative and unique ideas, they took mani/pedi to a new dimension by hosting birthdays, bridal showers and events for other occasions. To know more about how can a strong team manage a business and how Pretty Pedals Nail Spa took part in Kim Kardashian’s beauty regime in Kuwait, STUDENTALK conducted an interview with the diligent entrepreneurs.

How does Pretty Petals Nail Spa differ from any other salon? Pretty Petals mission is to provide reasonably priced, convenient nail and skin treatments. We believe in attracting and maintaining customers. Our services will exceed the expectations of our customers by offering a relaxing ambience and a shabby chic feel to the salon. We’re also working on making our salon an attractive spot to host birthdays, bridal showers, and any other occasions. Unlike many other places, our packages are customized towards customers’ preferences when it comes to decoration and food. We also have a couple of gift vouchers that you can get, and again we can personalize them with fresh flowers, candles, or even attach them with a gift of your choice.

How can three partners manage one business? Business structure is one of the most important aspects of starting and operating a successful business. In partnerships, decision making responsibility is shared; creativity is shared and therefore reflects positively on the business. A side from that, each one of us is responsible for a specific aspect of the business whether it was operational, financial, or marketing. We are all career driven women with day jobs and this partnership helps us delegate and share the responsibility. It is actually “pretty” fun working together as a team to Pretty Pedals Salon develop.

What are the marketing strategies that helped spread awareness for Nail Spa? We started out by a modest Instagram campaign where all our friends and family participated by reposting our logo, locations and services. We now focus highly on social media, therefore we try to reach out to our customers through Facebook, Twitter, etc. Participating in events and carnivals helps with getting our image out there as well ! A year into our business, Kim Kardashians happened. We were proud to be part of her beauty regime and did her nails when she was in Kuwait for a store opening. That was a great marketing opportunity for us ! Now we are moving to print advertisement through publishing an Advertorial in STUDENTALK Magazine for university students to know more about our services.

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

Who provided you with the essential support? Our families were our number one supporting system! Since day one, they were our stepping stone to our success. Our friends were involved to help us as well. They were the marketing team that every new business needs, and we are grateful for supporting us to spread the word for Pretty Pedals Salon!

Our services will exceed the expectations of our customers by offering a relaxing ambience and a shabby chic feel to the salon

In the competitive beauty market, how did you maintain your position? I think what really made us stand out was our branding and building a brand image. Also, our retail products have been a hit and made us standout from the competitors. We have also created an efficient customer loyalty program which had a high turnover and was a hit with our clients. The types of products used in our mani/pedi services are from top brands and ensures best results.

What are your future plans for your Nail Spa? We are hoping to expand our brand name by opening new branches in and out of Kuwait, and by diversifying our retail section and maintaining a strong clientele.

What advice would you like to give to potential entrepreneurs? In order to become a successful entrepreneur it frequently involves a series of slip-ups and mistakes before finally nailing the right idea or business. The difference, for many, between giving up and persisting through the toughest times can be getting advice from people who have done it before — and being smart enough to listen. The most successful people are the ones who make a business out of something they love, so focus on that ! Everything is possible, so dream big !

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD LOCAL BUSINESS

KUWAITI LOCAL BUSINESS

ZAID AL-KAILANI

IS GIVING ENTREPRENEURSHIP A NEW TWIST The successful emerging trend right now in Kuwait is establishing a new business from scratch. Well guess what? You do not have to launch a new business to be a successful entrepreneur. Zaid Al-Kailani identified Koji Restaurant’s core competencies and the issues needed to be addressed in order to further developed the restaurant. Thus, Al-Kailani acquired Koji Restaurant and embarked on the journey of the hospitality industry. If you would like to know more about the experience of established business acquisition in the entrepreneurship world, here is an interview from STUDENTALK Magazine Al-Kailani’s experience.

What instigated your passion into restaurant management?

Why did you choose to manage Koji other than any restaurant?

It was actually a combination of many things that led me to the hospitality industry. For starters, I grew up in a family that is involved in the food and beverage industry, and so from an early age, I was always interested in putting smiles on people’s faces through food and great service. You know that person that hosts dinners, gatherings, and events all the time? That is me. It brings me joy to be able to do that and naturally, it led me to become more aware of entering hospitality management. Finally, I was looking for a way to combine both hospitality and Finance, and decided to take a break from the investment side of business and enter the hospitality industry in order to gain more of a perspective from an operations side of a business before combining them both together.

Koji is a restaurant that I believe has great potential to become a leader in the Japanese/Asian Fusion segment of the market. Immediately upon trying out the food at Koji, I realized that the restaurant’s offerings are really delicious and of high quality. I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t a problem with its core competency that was preventing it from becoming a success. I identified a few issues that needed to be addressed and decided that it was a great opportunity and challenge that I wanted to face.

How are you going to manage Koji Restaurant differently from the previous management? For starters, I prefer to use the word lead than manage since it is a team effort with effective leadership that makes a business successful. Immediately, I realized that there were a lot of needs from the team that were not being addressed to in the most optimized manner. I made sure that listening and observing were my priorities during my first week upon taking over Koji, and as a team, we started devising solutions for those problems. My focus for going forward with Koji is realizing that delegating responsibilities and team effort are the main drivers for increasing morale and productivity.

What are the new marketing approaches you will use in order to increase Koji’s exposure? Before deciding on my marketing approaches, I first thought of who my target customers are, and what the most effective means to communicate to them would be. With the rising presence of social media, especially Instagram, I initially wanted to get Koji exposed on the platform to increase our presence and foster stronger relationships with our customers/ patrons. (By the way, don’t forget to follow @KojiKuwait!). I handed the responsibility of social media to my sister Rawan, a current student at AUK, who has been handling the account incredibly so far. For my main target segment, social media is the way to go. However, my other target markets require more creative means: through social settings we are working on a way to get Koji’s name spoken within regular and business conversations. Finally, one of the most effective ways is through referrals and word of mouth; primarily done by inviting friends, family, and influential individuals into the restaurant and listening to their feedback.

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

In what ways did entrepreneurship shape your personality? The idea of being an entrepreneur has always pushed me to stepping out of my comfort zone. From living in more than 5 countries, to switching careers 3 times in the last 5 years, I began to embrace change instead of oppose it. In addition, the idea of entrepreneurship has allowed me to look at problems in a more simplistic and structured way. This led me to solve unexpected problems in a more optimized manner. Finally, entrepreneurship has probably most affected my acceptance of failure. Without accepting and learning from my mistakes, I wouldn’t have been able to get myself more prepared for what is to come.

What advice would you like to provide for university students who plan to open their own business? Don’t follow trends. I have realized that the past few years, more and more individuals are keen to start up their own businesses without realizing what it really means to start something. Without passion, an individual will probably not feel happy about working for more than 12 hours each day, or feel upset that weekends are no longer existent. I would think that the first approach to starting your own business is to really ask yourself: do I love what I am doing? Am I willing to put in the work? After that has been answered, then an individual can evaluate what route to go through. Personally, I valued fixing a struggling restaurant more than starting my own from scratch. To others, it may be working with their friends on a project. Entrepreneurship has no set path, and it is up to the person to figure out how to pave their own route.

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD TIPS FOR BETTER YOU

Women Empowerment

If anyone ever told you that women are the weaker gender and they are emotional, smack them on their head. No wait, do not smack them with a bat or a brick. Smack some sense to them with words. Do not be surprised if a woman also said such a thing because unfortunately our gender is undereducated on their strong capabilities. High school, bachelors, marriage, work, raising children and after all of that we are the weaker gender. Take a minute to ponder on your competences and achievements and you will realize you are stronger than you ever wondered. As March issue is all about women empowerment, allow STUDENTALK to tell you how you can wear that invisible vest with an “S” on your chest. Yes you are Superwoman! 1.You are your own rock. Yes, do not depend on others whether for physical or emotional help. This world is not filled with rainbows and unicorns as it used to be. There is nothing wrong with depending on some family and friends when you need help but provide trust to minimal amount of people. However, if you guide yourself to do things on your own, you will eventually take control; which will increase your competency skills. 2. You are your own lawyer. Wear that long black coat and defend yourself by speaking your mind. Kuwait is a free country and you can express your mind (of course without hindering others feelings). Unfortunately in our culture, our fathers and brothers are expected to speak for us. There will be times where our male guardians will not be available. That is why you should learn your way out of situations, be informed of your right as a citizen and do not be afraid to report any physical or verbal harassment you encounter from anyone. 48

3. Education is your weapon. If you think that you need to work out or have a strong body in order to defend yourself; well, you got it all wrong. Education is your only sword, use it to tackle your own problems! There are several aspects you need to be informed on like your basic human rights, citizenship advantages and the experience you gain from others. Keep reading and listening everything you get your hands on. It’s time to put that library card in use. 4. Create goals and accomplish them. Make a two year, five year and a

ten year plan. Your accomplishments should correlate with your passion to increase your enthusiasm to attain your goals. Hang your future plans framed on your wall to be always reminded of what you want to do. Travel, create your own business, work on a humanitarian achievements, and your sky is the limit!

5. Do not base your happiness on being in a relationship. Do not wait for your knight in your shining armor on his white horse to come save you. Push him off the horse and use it in order to accomplish your own goals. Happiness should be bestowed from your own success. When you start being your own best friend and make yourself happy, you will reach ultimate independence and satisfaction. 6. Just be yourself! If you have an outgoing nature then just be, if you have a calm and quiet nature there is nothing wrong with that as well. Do not act in a certain way in order to impress anyone. Do you know why? Because you are just amazing the way you are. Yes you are! I discern at accomplished women like Safaa Al-Hashem, Rola Dashti, and Aseel Al-Awadi and my desire to grow becomes limitless. They have inspired women in Kuwait to engulf their lives around accomplishing their own goals. In the end, STUDENTALK would love to see more successful women in Kuwait especially university students. Guess what? endowed students get to be featured on STUDENTALK Magazine.

THE UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

Established in 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly, the Office for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), this agency is mandated to coordinate international action to protect refugees worldwide. Its main goal is to strive to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and resettle in a third country, return home voluntarily, or to integrate locally. The UNHCR strives to offer its services not exclusively to refugees but also provides services to asylum-seekers, returnees, internally displaced people, and stateless people. Refugees and asylum-seekers are commonly grouped together in their definitions; however, the two categories are quite different. Refugees, as defined by the 1951 Refugee Convention are , “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.” Asylum- Seekers are those who say they are refugees but whose claims have not yet been evaluated. Returnees are those refugees who return home voluntarily which marks the successful passing of their trauma. Internally displaced people are those refugees who have not crossed an international border seeking sanctuary; they have been uprooted from their home but are unable or unwilling to leave their home country. Finally, stateless people are those people who are not considered nationals by any state; this can be a consequence of reasons including discrimination in nationality legislation, state succession, and conflicts of laws between states.

50

The UNHCR is led by Antonio Guterres the United Nations High Commissioner. Guterres joined UNHCR on June 15, 2005 and was reelected in April 2010, prior to his election Guterres served as a prime minister to Portugal for 7 years. His rich political background gives him ample ability to lead the UNHCR in achieving their goal. To this date the UNHCR has helped some 34 million refugees worldwide.

UNHCR Presence in Kuwait UNHCR signed in 1996 a cooperation and office agreement with the State of Kuwait. The office in Kuwait focuses on the protection of and assistance to all refugees and asylum seekers in Kuwait, particularly those with special needs. The office has strong strategic partnerships with the Government of Kuwait and a number of NGOs including the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) and the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO). The Office also focuses on capacity building activities and has organized numerous workshops including the ‘Empowerment of Women’ workshop in collaboration with Shiekha Fariha Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Society for the Ideal Family and the Embassy of the Netherlands in January 2013. In the GCC UNHCR’s regional office is in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which covers all the GCC countries and its regional external relations hub in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Syrian Crisis Syria is experiencing an unrelenting conflict that has resulted in a massive displacement of its people that have fled their home country looking for asylum in one of the largest refugee exoduses in recent history. This displacement has resulted in a social, political and economic threat on neighboring countries that have hosted the Syrian refugees. Over 2.5 million people fled Syria since the beginning of the conflict in March 2011.

Special Envoy to High Commissioner Pop culture has become more intrinsically involved in the UNHCR’s goal over time. For example, Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in Geneva in 2007. Jolie first encountered this humanitarian crisis while filming her movie Tomb Raider in Cambodia in 2001. Her experiences filming the movie ignited her interest in the UNHCR and its motives; she began visiting refugee camps worldwide and gave very generous donations. Jolie has also accompanied Gutterres in missions to Lebanon, Jordan, and other neighboring countries to evaluate the effect of the refugees from Syria.

Kuwait Responds In response, at the Second International Pledging Conference for Syria which took place in Kuwait City, Kuwait has pledged to provide financial assistance in the amount of US$500 million in 2014 in addition to the US$300 million it pledged for the UN in last year’s conference (including US$110 for UNHCR). This financial attribution puts Kuwait as one of the top contributors to the Syrian crisis response and helped make for the most successful pledging conference in UN history.

SULAIMAN AL-BANAI The Most Talented Competition for February 2014 While singing “I am changing” by Jennifer Hudson, Sulaiman Al-Banai successfully changed the votes on www.studentalk-online.com and became the winner of STUDENTALK Talent Competition in the February issue. From the STUDENTALK team, we send our warm congratulation to Al-Banai. To know more about his experience in developing his talent, keep reading this interesting interview.

In what ways did you develop your talent? My talent is singing, it has been my passion ever since infancy. I have always loved singing but I have always been shy about singing in public. Since I joined AUK, I started taking music voice lessons, which not only did it help further develop my singing techniques but it also increased myself confidence which allowed me to be able to sing in public. After that, I was able to sing in different venues, one of them is Isma3ni Event that was held in discovery mall.

Do you think your future plans will come hand-inhand with singing? Yes, it will. My future plans right now are to graduate from AUK and hopefully get my Masters Degree in a couple of years while continuing to perform here and there.

What are the main obstacles that anyone with a talent might face in Kuwait? I wouldn’t call them obstacles, I would call them lack of opportunities. There just aren’t a lot of places that singers can just go to and sing, with the exception of Isma3ni Open Mic nights. I’ve found this to be especially difficult for English singers. There are a lot of talented singers here in Kuwait and It’s a shame that their talents aren’t being put into use.

Who supported your talent? I have friends and family that have always supported me and I’m beyond thankful for all their support.

What is the advice you would like to give to the STUDENTALK readers? It is always better to take your time and remember to always develop your own talent!

There are a lot of talented singers here in Kuwait and It’s a shame that their talents aren’t being put into use 60

H&M DENIM CUSTOMIZATION ALLOWS EVERYONE TO EXPRESS THEIR TRUE PERSONALITY With the emerging of different trends and fashion labels, the most important aspect regarding fashion is that it must define one’s personality. While assembling fashionable items to correspond with a personality is imperative, yes, you are your own fashion designer. H&M provides an exclusive opportunity to buy and customize outfits as an initiative to be enjoyed. The “Do it Yourself” campaign highlights each and every personality by allowing H&M fashionistas to customize their denim outfits. Jeans pants, denim jackets, and denim vests can all be customized using different collections of beads to bring out a unique sense of fashion. With H&M’s “Do It Yourself,” you can be your own fashion designer. Two typical university students who are H&M loyal buyers, told STUDENTALK Magazine about how they favor H&M jeans, as their jeans are always in trend and have the perfect cuts to fit their body shape.

Fatima Ali, who is majoring in Business Marketing and works part-time, is required to wear a uniform most of the time at work and she wants to express her outgoing and fun personality through fashion. She has a bubbly personality and her smile is an accessory on her face, but she also wants to accessorize her jeans as her height is her best feature.

Amira Mohammad, a Gulf University of Science and Technology student who is an active individual working on small projects on the side, is a calm person with a fun nature. GUST students are renowned for being up-to -date with the latest fashion trends. Chic and elegance with a fun twist is what really defines Amira through her personality as well as her fashion. She tries to accessorize her clothes to make them look smart casual to fit her lifestyle between university hours and working on her small projects.

“Between work and university, I have very little time to look great while meeting my friends and going to gatherings. I already love H&M jeans as they have the best jeans for my long legs. It was a very exciting idea to customize my jeans adding bling-bling on the side of the jeans to accentuate my height! A mixture of small and big crystals on the side preferably with different colors. Anyone who would look at my new customized H&M jeans will definitely say it’s for Fatima,” said Fatima.

“ The Gulf University of Science and Technology’s students are renown for their high sense of fashion and it is imperative for any student to look chic and elegant. With H&M’s ‘Do It Yourself,’ my jeans jacket looks very exquisite. The studs on the shoulders and the neck will give a confident and powerful look while walking down the university aisle. A combination of casual and chic has never been more stunning!” said Amira.

“Do It Yourself” for one day only at H&M Grand Avenue – The Avenues, and allow your style out on your own piece of denim. Buy any of the new spring denim creations, and enjoy designing it for free and on the spot. Give your denim this spring the voice that speaks out your personality. #HMDENIM

KAREN MILLEN SPRING 2014 | THE NEW REALITY The essence is the same, the attitude has changed: Karen Millen is confident but smiling, strong but easy. This fresh spirit is encapsulated in Spring 2014. From our Shoreditch-based atelier, our design team wanted to convey modern, urban, intelligent design – Karen Millen’s house codes – but with a renewed sense of ease. This is the New Reality: the crisp white cotton shirt, patchworked denim, a hint of nautical, and our signature leather jackets reworked in fresh white, playful stripes or a pop of colour. These clothes are solution pieces; they are the building blocks of a modern wardrobe, each playing to the brand’s strengths of impeccable quality and attention to detail. Effortless ease also comes in the form of looser silhouettes with a luxury sports vibe: bomber jackets, drawstring waists, sweatshirts and t-shirt dresses are worked in mesh, laser punched textures, and sheer and opaque fabrics with a technical twist. This is our modern Karen Millen woman, in her wrap skirt and slim-slouch jumper, she encapsulates how we feel about everything that is sophisticated yet cool about London. But our modern muse is nothing if not sensual. Empowered yet feminine, she wants her clothes to reflect this. Inspired by a vintage Victorian cape, our design team reproduced its exquisite threedimensional surface on slim, simple dresses, curvy skirts, a mini-jacket and devore t-shirts. Cut in red, black and white, the effect is graphically strong yet pretty. This brings us to the new Power Pretty – strong simple shapes that are beautifully decorated, be it with neon blooms or ivory lace. Relaxed, easy separates that are, quite simply, a cut above.

Apple iPhone 6 and iWatch What guide to the future year of gadgets would be complete without an iPhone mention somewhere? This year has been one of incremental improvements for Apple - the main headlines populated with talk of a new budget handset - so for Apple to improve, 2014 will have to impress. We’re expecting another jump in size for the iPhone and perhaps, following in the footsteps of the popular Samsung Note 3 and Galaxy Gear combo, it will come with an iWatch. A larger phone is harder to remove from your pocket and this is the year of wearable gadgets, so it seems like the ideal time for Apple to size-up and introduce its iWatch, at last.

Samsung NX300 Samsung’s Wi-Fi equipped NX300 hits all the right spots beautiful retro styling, a host of connectivity options and DSLR-like performance, thanks to a large 20.3 megapixel APS-C sensor. If you already own other Samsung mobile devices, the NX300 will play nicely with all of them.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 After a great response to the Galaxy Gear, Samsung is set to unveil an upgraded version - hopefully with some apps this time. The new Galaxy Gear 2 should feature its own built-in GPS - this would be brilliant coupled with that 4GB on-board memory. With the watch running apps and music you could leave your phone at home when out on a run.

Polaroid Socialmatic Camera Originally floated as a concept back in 2012, the Androidbased Socialmatic could revive the beloved Polaroid as we know it. An inkless printing system enables users to print stickers of their sepia-tinted images, and customise them using the 4.5 inch touchscreen. Slated for release by the end of 2014, it may be hipster, but it’s also incredibly cool

The Toyota FT-1 represents the pinnacle of a long-running endeavor by Calty, which marked its 40th anniversary last year, to create the ultimate sports car. FT-1 stands for “Future Toyota,” and the number “1” represents the ultimate. 2000GT, Celica, Supra, MR2 and most recently Scion FR-S. The project started nearly two years ago and represents a labor of love by a passionate, dedicated and gifted Calty design team. “The FT-1 is a dream-project for a designer and car enthusiast like myself,” said Alex Shen, Calty’s Studio Chief Designer. “Our team was heavily influenced by Toyota’s sports car past, especially Celica and Supra, and we sought to capture some of that history. It is an aggressive, track-focused sports car concept with a presence that has been amplified for shock and awe.”

FERAS-AL-MUTAIRI

KUWAIT PLEASURE BOAT RACING EMPHASIZES ON SAFETY FOR POTENTIAL SUCCESS. Summer 2010 the journey for Kuwait Pleasure Boat Racing embarked, kudus goes to Ahmad Al-Fassam and Feras AlMutairi. A onetime participation at the Qatar Marine Sports Federation Pro class in January 2010 triggered them to establish a team in Kuwait. In a period of four years, they have participated in 18 races in Qatar. For those students who are interested in boat racing, STUDENTALK presents all the information you need from KPR’s Co-Manager.

What instigated your participation for boat racing? I completed the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Endurance race for ATVs, and my teammate Ahmad wanted to participate in a boat race in Qatar; since he wanted someone with racing qualities, he approached me with the idea, knowing that I had no experience in boat racing whatsoever. However, I had the necessary skills to race. I gladly agreed.

Where and how does practicing for the boat racing take place? Practice is the most important part of racing, because not only does it develop your skills, but it grows a relationship between you and the boat as if it’s a human being. We must understand the boat techniques and its limits. Also, it is an opportunity to repair mechanical problems that may arise. Practice takes part mostly during the weekends, since Ahmad and I both have jobs, and only when practice is applicable according to the sea level and weather conditions. We find places that are secluded to avoid traffic. Sometimes we practice with other racers. Practice goes on as if we were in race conditions, with full safety precautions and gear.

Who provided you with the necessary support to participate in boat racing? Ahmad and I took it upon ourselves to provide the necessary means to participate. We sacrificed lots of time and effort, and also had to financially restrain ourselves in order to have the budget necessary to race. However, I must add that during our trip to all races, from start to end, as Kuwaiti racers and as friends, all Kuwaiti teams helped each other when it is needed regardless. And if it weren’t for the extra initiative from all Kuwaiti racers, many teams wouldn’t exist today. And now with magazines like STUENDTALK, we are able to reach out to more people than we have ever imagined, whether it is potential racers that need guidance, or people with general race interests, for that, I humbly thank you.

What are the necessary steps to take in order to encourage more people to participate? It is not merely a step, as for such a perilous sport you need a passion for racing and an audacious nature. A good way to start is to communicate with current teams, many people think that approaching a racing team is very hard, when it is the opposite. Some teams have unfilled voids, maybe not as drivers, but growing within the crew is the best way to test one’s self capabilities.. If anyone needs to be guided in the right direction, we will happily provide all necessary information about safe, supervised race.

76

We are climbing up the competition ladder, with even higher expectations for next year What are the challenges that you face when you manage KPR? There are many challenges when it comes to managing a team, and for us the challenges are doubled since we are the managers, sponsors, mechanics, and racers. Time and money are mainly the biggest constraints, as employees living off our salaries, we manage our careers and financial obligations in parallel with our team. Our team has grown in 4 years from 2 members participating in one Class in the QMSF (Qatar Marine Sports Federation) Pro races, to 4 members and participating in 2 Classes of the QMSF Pro races, and thus achieving 3rd place in races for both Classes in our last season, which is our best result yet, so slowly but surely, we are climbing up the competition ladder, with even higher expectations for next year.

Any last words for the readers? Success doesn’t just happen by chance, it is the result of hard work and many sacrifices, and without that, success has no taste. Team KPR has never failed in progression towards success. We have achieved enough to keep us going for more. Our thrive for the first place has grown exponentially. We keep surprising our competitors every year. Respecting all safety rules comes before anything, and must be taken seriously. So to all future racers out there, good luck and be safe!

F1 Kuwait

Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One Show Run on the Streets of Kuwait It’s not every day you get to see a Formula One car, never mind a World Championship winning one. That’s exactly what the people of Kuwait will see when the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One Show Run Team visits Kuwait on Friday March 28, 2014 at 3pm. The Quadruple Constructors’ Championship winning machine will be driven by Red Bull Junior Driver Carlos Sainz Jr. who will perform a full repertoire of donuts, burnouts and speed stretches in front of an expected 25,000 racing fans that will line the streets next to the Kuwait Towers. Fans will welcome the Infiniti Red Bull Racing World Champion Car on an 800-meter long urban track stretching from Bneid El Gar signal light to the Kuwait Towers. The car which accelerates from 0-100km/h in 2.4 seconds will reach speeds of 250km/h and above. In addition to the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One Show Run, Kuwait will get a glimpse of Chris Pfeiffer, a four-time World Stunt Riding Champion and one of the best Stunt Riders in the world who will be pushing the limits with his new tricks. The hype for the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One Show Run will begin a few days before the main event, when the team’s car will be displayed and fired up around various locations in Kuwait as well as other activities such as the Red Bull Pitstop Game. Red Bull Show Runs will take place at racing circuits, on city streets, at festivals and exhibitions. Often playing to crowds measured in hundreds of thousands, they will give fans the chance to witness the contained ferocity of a Formula One car at very close quarters. Formula One is a great sport for TV, but there’s no substitute for the ear-splitting roar of the engine, the haze of tire smoke and aroma of burning rubber.

ENTERTAINMENT CELEBRITIES

SIMON COWELL IS A DAD! There’s a new idol in Simon Cowell’s life: his son. On Friday at 5:45 p.m., his girlfriend, Lauren Silverman, gave birth to a healthy baby boy at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. His proud pop confirmed the new arrival and the baby’s name on Twitter. Though Cowell had been in London filming the audition stage of “Britain’s Got Talent,” the 54-year-old mogul made the eight-hour flight to be by Silverman’s side. It has been a untraditional path to parenthood for this couple, who first revealed Silverman’s pregnancy last summer, while she was still married to Cowell’s friend, real estate tycoon Andrew Silverman. Since then, however, Lauren finalized her divorce from Andrew, went to Barbados with Simon, and enjoyed a glamorous baby shower. There have also been rumors that Cowell is gearing up to propose, but we’re not going to count on that just yet. While this is Simon’s first spin at being a parent, Lauren already has a nearly 8-year-old son named Adam from her marriage to Andrew. We guess that means it’s Cowell who has some learning to do. Hopefully he’s got talent when it comes to fatherhood.

ROBIN THICKE AND PAULA PATTON SPLIT AFTER 8 YEARS OF MARRIAGE

The lines are no longer blurred. Robin Thicke, 36, and Paula Patton, 38, have separated after eight years of marriage. “We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time,” the couple said in a statement. The high school sweethearts met in Los Angeles when Thicke was just 14 and Patton, 16. They married in 2005 and welcomed their only child, son Julian Fuego, in April 2010. The split comes after months of unfriendly rumors that the “Blurred Lines” crooner had been cheating on Patton. In August, Thicke was spotted grabbing a female fan’s bottom in a Miami club and in January the singer was photographed with an unknown woman at a Paris nightclub.

HOW KHLOÉ KARDASHIAN IS DEALING WITH HER DIVORCE The 29-year-old is opening up about how she managed to move on from her split, despite having a very public divorce. “I’m not a big ‘cry on a shoulder’ person,” she said. “I’m very introverted when it comes to my own stuff. Everyone has issues, and I’m not someone who likes to burden people ... I hold things in. I don’t know why.” While the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star isn’t shedding tears on someone’s shoulder, she’s also not wallowing in sadness. Instead, she’s taking things in stride and focusing on the future, which she has high hopes will be very bright. “If you think too far in the future, you might get disappointed or set the bar too low. It sucks at times, but everything happens for a reason, no matter how horrible your circumstances are,” she said. “To say where I want to be in 10 years. I have no idea. I just know that I want to be happy and smiling.”But happiness isn’t Khloé’s only hope for the future — she also admitted to wanting children one day.

NICKI MINAJ SLAPPED WITH $30M LAWSUIT Nicki Minaj just might be flipping her wig soon! The former “American Idol” judge is facing legal trouble after her former hairstylist Terrence Davidson filed a $30 million lawsuit Friday in the district court in Atlanta. Davidson claims that he and Minaj made plans to create a wig line together and were in discussions about a possible joint reality show. Davidson began working for Minaj in January 2010, and as the “Starships” singer began to get more and more famous, so did her super colorful wigs. Now, the hairstylist is claiming that he lost out on profits after he saw versions of the personalized wigs he’d made on her site. “I see the wigs online...People are basically duplicating what I created for Nicki Minaj,” said Davidson But, while the suit seems to be quite the hairy situation, Davidson’s attorney, Christopher Chestnut, said that this lawsuit is about more than just hair. “On its face, you might think, what this guy is suing over wigs. But we really have to consider this in context,” he said. “Hair is a multibillion-dollar industry, but moreover these are not your grandma’s wigs. These are eclectic. They are decadent, and they are creative. This is about a brand that Terrence has built.”

ENTERTAINMENT HOROSCOPE

WOMEN CHARACTERISTICS ACCORDING TO THEIR HOROSCOPE STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20

As we are celebrating Women Empowerment issue in STUDENTALK, here are the characteristics of women according to their star sign, guys please take notes!

Pisces Man:

The Pisces man is the last sign in the zodiac and considered to be an ‘old soul.’ Pisces men are torn between the spiritual realm and the real world of materialism. Pisces men may never seem entirely at ease as a result of these pulling forces. The Pisces man is intuitive to the extreme and possesses superb intuitions. He is quick to take on the problems of others and has a hard time saying no, even when he should.

Pisces Woman: Kesha

Queen-Latifah

Rihanna

The Piscean woman is a mysterious, sensual mermaid, her secrets kept secure behind inscrutable dark eyes. She has a vivid mind, and is romantic and spiritual. Like the rivers and seas this sign swims in, Piscean women have deep emotions and strong undertows in their personalities.

Mar 21 - Apr 20 LIBRA

ARIES

A fearless and natural leader, an Aries woman is charismatic, energetic, and dynamic. She looks forward to new challenges and novel situations, and is up at the crack of dawn each day, raring to go.

Sep 24 - Oct 23

Apr 21 - May 21

Oct 24 - Nov 22

GEMINI

A Gemini woman is extremely clever and has the ability to discuss every subject under the sun politics, religion, travel - then just as easily switch to talking about the latest celebrity faux pas.

CANCER

AQUARIUS

LEO

August 23 - Sep 23 PISCES

92

Nov 23 - Dec 21 The Sagittarius woman seeks the truth in all circumstances. She explores every man, woman, and child profoundly and topics of conversation can run the gamut from politics to religion.

Dec 22 - Jan 20 Dressed in a sharp suit and peering over the top of her horn-rimmed glasses, you’ll find a Capricorn woman chairing the executive meeting, spinning big deals out of thin air.

She is a tempest filled with an inner force and power, which can be a little scary when you first come into contact with her. Hold on tight and go along for the ride.

Feb 20 - Mar 20 VIRGO

The Virgoan woman is very discerning, a natural critic, and a sharp analyzer of everything and everyone. Highly intuitive, she has the ability to sense what is off-key about a person or situation, and hone in to this with intent to improve.

Direct, and brilliantly sharp, Scorpio women only focus on the fundamental essence of any issue and disregard the superfluous. They like clear endings and beginnings, with no grey areas in between.

Jan 21 - Feb 19

July 23 - Aug22 You can usually pick out a Leo woman from a crowd - she’s the one with the loudest laugh, the brightest smile, and the most confident strut of them all.

CAPRICORN

June 22 - July 22 The Cancerian woman is sensitive - very sensitive but not only to her needs, but to the needs of others, making her one of the most sympathetic and caring women of the Zodiac. If you criticize her she may very well take it personally and it may not be forgotten!

SAGITTARIUS

May 22 - June 21

SCORPIO

TAURUS

She has a hot and fiery temper, and will unleash it when pushed to the limits; however Taurus women are generally sweet natured, with a liking for pretty little objects of affection. A personal serenade or some exotic orchids would do the trick nicely.

The Libran woman embodies fairness, justice, and balance. She is represented by the scales, ideally weighted, flawless and complete. Librans are sociable and have a gift for communication.

She puts a great deal of emphasis on the unseen in her life, whether it be her own intuition, her emotions, or the world of spirituality and religion. This is a woman who is always looking for - and finding - deeper meaning, from the grand scheme of life itself to her own social interactions.
