DANAH TAQI

A SPECIAL INTERVIEW ABOUT BUSINESS, FASHION & ALMUBARAKIYA EXPO

Danah Taqi is a successful young Kuwaiti woman with an entrepreneurial mind. Powered by an ambition that knows no boundaries, Danah has indeed created a name for herself on the corporate, social and entrepreneurial levels. On the corporate level, Danah holds the position of Public Relations and Marketing Director of MODS Holding Company, specializing in turning local Food and Beverages concepts into regional and international franchises. On the Social Media level, Danah has become one of the icons of influencers of her time. As for the entrepreneurial side of her character, we have all wondered who was behind the ingenious idea of the AlMubarakiya Expo; meet the energetic Danah Taqi.

‫قصة الغالف‬

How did you start your career in PR and Marketing? I believe my career started from as early as my university days. As I was specializing in Marketing, I took courses in Public Relations, Entrepreneurial Marketing, Online Media Relations and Business Development. My university on-campus days were spent executing projects and events as well as creating a large network of contacts. Following my graduation, I joined the governmental sector as Communication and Change Management Executive at the Ministry of Finance in Kuwait, then I became a Co-Founder and Representative of K-Lead Centre of Excellence, a training centre dedicated to the upper management of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries. After acquiring the necessary experience from the public sector, I shifted my career path to the private sector. Currently, I’m the Public Relations and Marketing Director of MODS Holding Company, specializing in turning local Food and Beverages concepts into regional and international franchise. In parallel to my work, and for further personal development, I established Downtown Communications for Public Relations and Marketing Services.

Your name is highly linked to the fashion world, yet you live in the corporate environment, how do you incorporate both aspects into your busy schedule? Businessmen and businesswomen have to pay attention to details; external appearances are considered personal branding and image positioning. Attending business meetings and events with a corporate look has been challenging for me, yet very exciting! Today, I honestly believe that the corporate look is the most fabulous in fashion. Fashion is more of a statement rather than style.

Logomania

Tell us more about your involvement in the fashion world My involvement with the fashion world has been on various levels. Throughout the years, I have hosted several local multi-brand stores openings and product launches. I preciously acted as a Brand Ambassador for Joseph and while working with a renowned fashion magazine in Kuwait; I was assigned the setting of their Online Media Relations Department. More recently, I have been working on Harrys of London as one of the brands under MODS Holding Co.

What was your mission and vision regarding the AlMubarakiya Expo? AlMubarakiya Expo is a non-profit and volunteer initiative dedicated to support Small Businesses in Kuwait. The Expo took place in the heart of Kuwait City; we illuminated the future by reviving Kuwait’s past. For 12 consecutive days divided into 4 different phases, the Expo featured 450 participants. Our aim was to showcase high standard projects, services and products that had an edge either from a Business Development perspective, or from a Brand Image, Public Relations or Marketing perspectives. A dedicated committee was established to review and select the participants according to set criterion ensuring that every participant within the Expo was a business role model.

What was the main element behind its great success?

DKNY Spring 2014 now available in: The Avenues - Phase 2 (Ready to Wear & Accs.) 360 Mall (Accessories) Marina Mall (Accessories) For more information call 22597111 Follow DKNY on Instagram @AlYasra 22

AlMubarakiya Expo was a pure CSR activity aimed at showcasing Small Businesses in Kuwait. There was neither participation nor an entry fee to the expo. The end result was something that went far beyond our wildest expectations! From the number of participants, to the number of visitors and the amount of publicity the event received, it felt like we were creating a new fashion trend for small businesses. I don’t believe there is only one element behind any success story, however, what surely helped us greatly was seeing everybody come together, joining efforts and ideas in one place, the AlMubarakiya Expo has truly been a great source of personal pride from inception to completion.

#Throwback90’s

Should the new generation choose fashion or career? Kuwaiti women are setting international fashion standards, as they are becoming a working force to be reckoned. You can incorporate your own sense of fashion in a very successful career, and I believe this would be a remarkable statement.

STUDENT LIFE INTERVIEW

UNIVERSITY CLUB LEADERS

JASIM MASTERS

WELCOMES ALL NATIONALITIES TO THE PATRIOTIC CLUB Kuwait is the haven of comfort not only for Kuwaitis, but also for all the other nationalities that is embraced by this flourishing country. Yes, We all love Kuwait. You can express your love and be more involved with Kuwait at the American University of Kuwait through the Patriotic Club. Jasim Masters, the Vice Pressident of the Patriotic Club, encourages AUK students to take part in activities and events that represents Kuwait. Here is an interview by STUDENTALK Magazine with Masters to show you the ways where you can be involved with Kuwait regardless of your ethnicity, nationality, gender or age.

Why did you decide to run as the Vice President of the Patriotic Club? I believe that the Patriots Club meets my needs as a person, student, and a citizen. I am interested in developing the club so that it has much to offer to its members in every way. It is very important to preserve national pride as well as embrace those who come from different nationalities living in Kuwait. To be a patriot is not strictly limited to Kuwaitis; we welcome all who share our love for this flourishing nation.

What is the mission of the Patriotic Club? Our mission is to promote and spread patriotism to the next generation, as well as raising awareness to the community about their freedoms and their rights not only as citizens of this great country but also as human beings. Citizens and residents of Kuwait might feel dissent about a social issue, and it is the job of the Patriots Club to advocate for the rights the Kuwaiti constitution grants AUK students.

How can the Patriotic Club in Kuwait promote equality between the Kuwaitis and the Residents? We treat all of our members equally regarding their respective nationality, age or gender. We unite under the focused interest that the club pursues between its members, which is the love for this country and getting involved in its activities no matter where our members come from. We embrace different cultures and welcome different voices. At the end of the day, we are most successful when we showcase the different ways in which we love Kuwait, and that can only be achieved when we have a diverse range of members.

What are the events that you held to promote patriotism among AUK Students? Among the events that were held by the Patriots Club are: the national day celebrations event, the constitution week, and a flurry of carnivals throughout the year. All our events coincide with Kuwaiti events or celebrations.

As the vice president, how can you manage the difficulties that any club would encounter? As vice president of the Patriots Club, I see myself solving the problems that the president is unable to solve alone. I try to fill in the gaps amongst the committees, as well as engage in conflict resolution that the members might be having amongst themselves in terms of stressful event planning. Like any club, we experience bumps in the road and I take it upon myself to ensure everyone’s comfort.

What advice would you like to provide for STUDENTALK readers and AUK students? It is never a bad idea to get involved, no matter what your age or nationality is. Getting involved is important because Kuwait is our home.

It is very important to preserve national pride as well as embrace those who come from different nationalities living in Kuwait 30

UH-OH, HERE WE GO AGAIN LATIFA AL-QALLAF, 19, AUM, INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

Oh My God, It’s another morning, and I don’t know what to wear! I move out of my bed to go to my closet, I open it and stand there staring at the colorful clothes, that are so neatly hanged next to each other. I move them around a bit, unwillingly. I WANT TO CRY. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO WEAR. I stay standing, till I start singing, “oh, oh, here we go again…” (Song: Here we go- Matt Kearney) I guess every woman encounter this problem every single morning. The delimma lies in choosing my outfit as it must be a smart and diversed choice. Moreover, I have to dress accordingly every single time! For example in the morning, I have to have a natural, healthy look, small amounts of makeup, something easy and compatible with my daily events and the weather. Also, I cannot wear the same piece of clothing too many times. I need to keep my looks fresh and upbeat. However, we experience those lazy days and think: Why do I have to dress up and try every single day? For whom? My friends? But, if they love me they will love my reality too! These thoughts result in me going out like, as we call it in Kuwaiti “hailegeya” tacky in English. Then my “awesome” friends ridicule me, till I regret it. But what they don’t know is that it’s good to have a change. It’s good to go without makeup. It makes them appreciate you more when you more fashionable than usual. That’s the problem with the Kuwaiti girls. They think that being overdressed is the way to look great. For example, girls who go the gym with full makeup. No! You know better sweetheart. There are several things you need to keep in mind while “dressing up,” think of your skin, it will be a combination of sweat and foundation. Full makeup is not for the gym but it is for special evening occasions. At night you are meant to wear makeup and a more fashionable attractive look. You are expected to have tight clothes with sparkles and dark lipstick. However, do not wear something that doesn’t complement your body. Several many pieces of clothes might look great on a model or on a mannequin but every human is shaped differently. Therefore, if it doesn’t go with your figure, I am sorry dear it is not meant to be. There is even a website called “what to wear” you input your information and it gives you ideas on types of outfits. However, the best advice I can give you is that you should wear what you love. People see what you want them to see. Feel beautiful in order to be beautiful. That does not mean that if you find an Aluminum/ full leather/full glitter shirt online and you think it is awesome you should wear it. Please never buy that! Ask yourself these three following questions to help you decide what to wear: Where you are going? What look you want to pull off? After that you need to see whether the outfit complements your body or not. If you think about it, it’s really simple! However, after all the advice I gave and all that I have said. I will wake up in the morning not knowing what to wear and I still sing “oh oh, here we go again..”

VOLUNTEER WORK

SARA AL-BASRI

PURSING FASHION FOR A GOOD CAUSE As everybody in Kuwait enjoys attending events related to fashion, Sara Al-Basri combined the community’s passion with a good cause. She created a fashion show singlehandedly in order to donate the money to the KAACH. Her passion towards fashion and helping kids suffering from cancer made her fund this event from her own expense. STUDENTALK had the pleasure to interview Al-Basri in order to know how she managed the whole event from models, designers and the runway show. She assured that philanthropy and fashion can come hand-in-hand.

In what ways did you manage such charitable and fashionable event? Having a fashionable and charitable event can be difficult, you need a lot of patience and passion toward your goal. I had friends and organizers to help me out in each layout from the tickets till the runway. At the end, the success of this event goes to every model, designer, and everyone who attended this event.

How did you manage to collect the funding for the charitable organization? The payment of the whole show was from my own expense. unfortunately, having sponsorship for any charitable event can be really difficult nowadays. We raised the money from the tickets that were sold with wreaths that matched our theme.

Which charitable organization did you devote the money for? I donated the whole money to KAACH mainly to the NBK hospital for kids with cancer. They were the main reason I wanted to make a fashion show in a first place.

Are you planning on making another fashion in the near future? Yes , and I’m hoping to proceed in making charitable fashion shows but in the future it will be more related to kids than adults.

What is your next step towards fashion? How can fashion be used as a method to help charities in Kuwait? Fashion can be definitely used as a purpose for a charitable project in Kuwait as we have plenty of talented designers. These designer need an opportunity to display their work be known amongst their community. As fashion shows are fun activities, it is the perfect combination where you can help out talented designers, and raise awareness and money for charity. It is actually a great method to help out your society in a fun way Therefore, it is not a waste of time or money as people will be entertained and will have a sense of self fulfillment while giving back to society.

I have not take it in consideration what is my next step but definitely I want to take fashion shows to the next level of excitement. I want to make more events where everyone can participate and have a great time.

Who provided you with the necessary support? My family and friends gave me their full support it was for a good cause. They have always supported my decisions and persuaded me to go after my ideas. I would like to extend my esteemed gratitude to La Joie Event Planning as they helped out with the tickets and the event.

PASSION FOR “PHASION”

Whether you tell yourself that you are not involved in fashion, inevitably, the item you are wearing does revolve around fashion. However, you decide to wear the fashionable item according to your style. Regardless of what your style maybe, whether gothic, hippie, casual, or classic, you can still look fashionable. Here are some fashion tips that will help you in your everyday life style. These fashion tips are not only for the ladies. Guys you should take notes too! There is nothing wrong with guy looking fashionable as well!

1. Dress for the occasion. Please girls don’t wear heels while going

for a walk down the beach and guys don’t wear slippers while going to university. Before you pick your outfit, know where you are going during that day or what the occasion will be. Even if your style is gothic, you can still put together an outfit for a special evening occasion while maintaining your identity.

2.

Accessorize. A dress can look completely different if you add a scarf, necklaces and a belt. Invest in accessorizing instead of buying different items. That way you will enjoy a versatility in your looks and guess what? It will make you look prettier. As for the guys, bowties, ties, scarves and hats can give you a different look every time.

3. Styling. It does not only accentuates your identity, it gives the benefit of having distinguished looks. For example, with cropped tops coming out, you can always wear them over your dresses. This will make the dress seem like a skirt. As for men, you can wear a shirt fully buttoned once, and in the next time you can wear it over a t-shirt with a scarf. In this essences, you can wear the same time in two different ways

44

4. Shopping. We all love shopping, not all but definitely most of us.

Synchronize your wardrobe! Shop for the items that are essential to bring out the life of the other items. Sometimes we make the mistake of buying products that do not complement what is in the wardrobe, then you will end up being more items than you actually need. If you have a great paycheck, then that’s fine. However, budgeting needs to be taken into consideration, thus keep in mind the items that you buy.

5. Be up-to-date. With the emerging of new technological social media aspects, you are able to expand your knowledge regarding what is new in fashion. Instagram, Bloggers, and Tumblr can all be a beneficial source to style your wardrobe according to what’s new. Also, another beneficial way to be up-to-date is window shopping. While hanging out with your friends, take a look at the mannequins at every shop and imagine yourself wearing an item, and how you would accessorize it with the other items you own.

6. Know your body. Apple shape, pear shape, V cut body....regardless, you need to know your body in order for you to know what will accentuate your figure. Also, you do not need to reveal too much of your body to look beautiful! Balance yourself outfit in order to look great without revealing too much.

We all like to great regardless of gender and identity. You might feel restricted in what you should wear in a conservative country. However, by revealing too much you will never be accounted as a “Fashionista.” Learning never ends when it come to fashion, so keep on looking at magazines such as STUDENTALK’s fashion section and you will be always updated with the latest fashion and the stress of what to wear every day will definitely decrease!

THE UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

INTER-AGENCY REGIONAL RESPONSE FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey 28 February - 6 March 2014 This situation update provides a snapshot of the inter-agency regional humanitarian response in full coordination with host Governments and 156 partners across the region.

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS  Mass vaccination campaigns led by WHO and UNICEF were launched in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Syria on 2 March and in Lebanon on 9 March. The campaign plans to reach nearly 10 million children across the Middle East with a dose of polio vaccine this month and more than 22 million children multiple times over six months. This is the region’s largest-ever coordinated immunization plan.  The first secondary school for Syrian refugees in Domiz camp, in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, was opened in collaboration with UNESCO and International Rescue Committee. The school has the capacity to host 600 students, and certified teachers will be selected from amongst the camp population. The Kurdistan Region is hosting more than 95 per cent of Iraq’s 226,000 registered Syrian refugees, of whom 58,500 are living in Domiz camp.  Ongoing fighting in western Iraq's Anbar province continues to force more people to move to safety, including to areas in Al Qa’im Governorate and the Kurdistan Region which are already hosting large numbers of Syrian refugees. More than 300,000 people are estimated to be affected. Close to Baghdad, the city of Fallujah remains under siege, the roads remain closed and there are reports of shortages of fuel, food and other basic items.

28 Feb - 6 Mar 2014 | Page 2

LEBANON: PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM STRETCHED TO ITS LIMITS  Public schools lack both the capacity and resources to accommodate the large increase in school-aged children as a result of the refugee influx. Despite the Ministry for Education and Higher Education’s (MEHE) efforts to ensure capacity to enroll almost 90,000 Syrian children and the availability of nonformal education, more than half of Syrian refugee children aged 5 to 17 are estimated to be not accessing any form of education.  Additional educational resources need to be put in place throughout the country to respond to both immediate and longer-term educational needs of school-aged refugee children in Lebanon, which currently totals more than 300,000 children.  In January, the MEHE supported by UNHCR opened “second shifts" for students in 79 out of 87 schools Young Syrian refugees attending an Accelerated Learning Programme in Tripoli, Lebanon, to help them catch up after months or years of missed classes planned for the 2013-2014 school year. and regain confidence in their own abilities. UNHCR | S. Baldwin  Over 90,000 Syrian refugee students are currently enrolled in Lebanese public schools including 29,900 students attending the afternoon shift in 79 schools, which delivers a lighter, certified curriculum for Syrian students who were not able to enroll in the first shift.  Over 5,000 out-of-school children benefitted from the Accelerated Learning Programme provided by Amel Association, Hilfswerk Austria International, UNHCR, UNICEF and World Vision in February. In addition, IQRA Association completed another round of accelerated learning classes with the graduation of 1,061 children.  UNHCR continued the distribution of education materials (school-in-a-box), which have reached 411 schools (3,750 classrooms) supporting 150,000 children and 7,500 teachers with basic school supplies. Additional individual education material (60,000 school bags and over 124,000 additional notebooks) was distributed to children enrolled in formal and non-formal education.

EGYPT: INVESTING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO ASSIST REFUGEE AND LOCAL CHILDREN  In coordination with the Ministry of Education, UNHCR and UNICEF have increased the capacity of schools in areas with a high concentration of Syrians to enable access to education for some 6,960 children between 6 - 14 years of age in 53 primary public schools in five governorates. UNHCR and UNICEF have provided computers, furniture and education supplies to 20 schools with high concentrations of Syrian children.  In collaboration with civil society organizations, UNICEF has established 12 community-based kindergartens in Cairo and Kalubiya for 290 children between 3-5 years of age.  The Ministry of Higher Education has reported that 3,552 Syrian undergraduate students are enrolled in public universities and 672 Syrians are enrolled in post-graduate studies in Egyptian universities.

JORDAN: PROMOTING SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND QUALITY OF EDUCATION  In order to encourage children's continued attendance in schools, UNICEF and Save the Children Jordan initiated a "Back to School/Stay in School" campaign on 26 January, promoting messages that also focus on child protection, child labour and early marriage. The campaign has reached some 40,000 refugees in Zaatari camp and 3,500 in the Emirates Jordan Camp.  UNICEF/CADER conducted a four-day pedagogy training (the first half of a two-part training series) for 194 teachers in doubleshifted host community schools. The training seeks to enhance teachers’ classroom management abilities, introduce learner-centred approaches and assessment techniques, and support quality of education, particularly in the context of schools operating at maximum capacity. Training of these 194 teachers ultimately benefits some 3,500 students.

UNESCO: LEARNING PATHWAYS FOR VULNERABLE REFUGEE AND LOCAL YOUTH  UNESCO Amman launched in February 2014 the second phase of its project on youth skills development, titled Sustaining Quality Education and Promoting Skills Development Opportunities for Young Syrian Refugees in Jordan.  The first phase of the project was successfully completed over the past months and offered young Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian youth alternative learning pathways as well as contributing to re-engage participants positively in their communities.  UNESCO’s implementing partner Questscope, in close coordination with the Jordanian Ministry of Education and local civil society partners in selected urban areas, provided much-needed alternative learning programmes to some 1,300 youth in Zaatari Camp and across Jordan, including to young people from vulnerable host communities whose resources and social relations have been strained by the influx of refugees fleeing the Syria crisis.  The project also seeks to ensure that once Syrian refugee children are enrolled in formal schooling, the quality of education delivered is of a high standard and not compromised by the new pedagogic challenges placed on teachers as a result of accommodating Syrian students in their classrooms. In partnership with the Queen Rania Teachers Academy, training of more than 400 trainers and 2,000 teachers in schools that hosts Syrian refugees was completed in January 2014 across the country. By training a large cohort of Ministry officials, the project seeks to develop systemic capacity in the Ministry of Education so that the concepts contained in the training can be embedded in other regular school-based support.  Over the coming 12 months, the second phase of the project will benefit more than 2,500 Syrians and vulnerable Jordanians across the country.  Nearly 1,400 out-of-school Jordanian and Syrian refugee youth will be enrolled in non-formal education programme. This unique initiative developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education to provide an equivalency to a 10th grade level certificate of the Jordanian Education System for out-of-school Syrian and vulnerable Jordanian youth.

 Informal education will provide learning opportunities for more than 350 Syrian refugees both in Zaatari and the host community and learning spaces to facilitate their transition onto formal schooling and other educational opportunities.  In addition, 700 Syrian youth in Zaatari will be enrolled in two mentoring programme cycles and coached by 70 mentors with the support of 14 case managers in the camp. FEATURE RESTAURANT REVIEW

KOJI ASIAN FUSION WITH A HOMEY FEELING Allow STUDENTALK magazine to introduce to its esteemed readers, Koji, an Asian fusion restaurant that offers a unique experience. You do not need to travel to Japan, China, or Vietnam in order to enjoy all the various combinations of flavors this fusion restaurant serves. Fresh ingredients, mind-blowing presentation, a soothing atmosphere, and feel good food are all part of the menu at Koji. With the knowledgeable and friendly staff to guide you on your culinary journey, you will feel right at home with every bite you take. If you are looking for the perfect escape haven to relax, to laugh with your friends, and/or work, then take a drive to Koji, located in Kuwait City. (@KojiKuwait on Instagram) Our culinary adventure began with a variety of different salads to taste from. Immediately when our Crispy Calamari Salad was placed on the table, our eyes were being fed with colors! A combination of crispy calamari pieces, iceberg lettuce, cashew nuts, and apple slices topped with a sweet miso vinaigrette dressing gave a perfectly balanced crispy taste in every bite. For our chicken lovers, try their Crispy Chicken Salad! The plate looks like a mountain, with shredded cabbage, carrots, chicken, and broccoli forming the base. The whole salad is topped with crispy flakes and a tasty sesame dressing that leaves you feeling light and hearty. The salads will make you fall in love with healthy food from how yummy they taste. Next stop, our appetizers began arriving at our table. We started with an order of their Shrimp on Toast. Served with a side of sweet chili sauce, these bite-sized pieces make you feel like you are walking through China Town. Moving on, a large bowl suddenly began to emerge at our table. This was their Seafood Dumplings in Ginger and Shitake Mushroom Broth. We were instructed by their staff to eat the dumplings then sip the broth. The combination of textures and flavors blended together is unlike any other we have tried. What a heavenly taste! The journey for Asian food lovers does not end here. Their Sesame Chicken has a very distinguishable taste. With every bite you take, you will feel the sweetness stemming from the sesame sauce and the delicious taste of the chicken. If you love spicy food then you have to try their Chili Shrimp! It’s exclusivity comes from the combination of sweet and spicy taste. Better yet, why not have both!

The sushi rolls are an exotic experience; we are definitely sushi fans! Koji has variety of sushi rolls and sauces to choose from. Starting with the basics, their California Rolls feel lighter and tastier. One of Koji’s priorities was to reduce mayo from their menu, and they did just that with the California Rolls; you can really taste the different ingredients! Their Shrimp Tempura Roll also has a different twist to it: they took a basic tempura roll and topped it off with crab and cucumber in a secret sauce to balance all flavors together: who knew that could produce a taste and texture like that! As for the Tasty Crab roll, Koji Restaurant should have named it the Very Tasty Crab Roll as its crunchy topping with avocado and crab has a particularly indescribable taste. Some sauces we recommend ordering are the TeriMayo, Wasabi Cream, and the Special Sauce. Dip your rolls in them and it you will be taken to a different dimension of taste!

If you think pizzas only belong in Italian restaurants, look again! Koji took the basic concept of a pizza and added a Japanese touch to it. Starting off with a crispy flatbread, the Tuna Pizza has a base of creamy ponzu sauce topped with finely sliced tuna. Tuna lovers, your taste buds will be crying for this!

Meat-lovers, the Diced Beef in Black Pepper will provide you with the tingling feeling with the fresh black pepper and tender cubed meat. This is one of their specialties! Seafood has never been healthier! The Sea Scallop with Coconut Curry is seared and placed on top of a bed of vegetables like carrots and shitake mushroom and a delicious coconut curry sauce. Enjoy it with a side of steamed rice and you have a perfect main meal. For a final touch, the dish has truffle oil added for extra taste. To conclude Koji’s exciting experience, you have to try the Honey Caramelized Banana with Vanilla Ice-Cream. Every bite from the caramelized bananas, crunchy from the outside yet smooth and tender from the inside, leaves you wanting more! Savor it with the vanilla ice-cream and caramel sauce and you will be floating on the clouds.

Koji Restaurant is offering Lunch Specials for busy guests who seek quick meals! For home delivery call 22461882/4 or order online at www.talabat.com. Koji Restaurant is located in Kuwait City, Al Sour Street, Next to the HSBC Tower. Follow Koji on Instagram: @KojiKuwait 53

Eamon Vs. Mohammad

Who Will Win The “Most Talented” Competition

E T VO W O N www

.com

Introduce yourself to the readers Good morrow to you, gentle viewers! My name is Eamon Issa and, in case you can’t tell, I am incredibly English. I mean, seriously English. So English I make Winston Churchill look French! Now, where’s my tea?

What is your talent? My talents are many but my main ones would have to be writing, comedy and acting. They all involve forms of expression, which is a particular skill I am quite fond of.

How did you develop your talent? Mainly through an incredible dose of luck, along with no little bit of skill. Acting is a new pursuit for me as I only started in late 2012 with no background in it at all. It was an easy fit though. I’ve always been eloquent with word and gesture so I picked it up easily and my enthusiasm for acting has only grown with time.

What are your future plans? I plan to finish my English Literature degree before either pursuing a career in teaching, as I’ve developed a fondness for tutoring people in English, or taking a further degree in Drama and seeing where my acting talent will take me.

Did you encounter any obstacles? Not especially. People on the whole have been incredibly positive about my foray into the field of theatre so it was an easy transition. I believe everyone deserves that kind of support when they are pursuing something they find fascinating.

Who supported your talent? My parents and friends have pretty much been all “Go Eamon! You can do it!” in spirit, if not in words. It certainly helps that I’m actually good at what I do though.

Any last words for the readers? Yes, don’t eat the yellow snow. Seriously. It’s a very bad idea. But on a serious note, if you don’t know what you want to do in life then I suggest trying as many different things as possible to discover what you like. I took a drama class on a whim because it looked fun but I never knew I would develop such a passion for it. No matter what you may think you know about life, it can and will always surprise you so an open mind and open arms will help you find and embrace new yet-undiscovered talents.

LAID BACK is her spring mantra—the comfort, and the easy chic, of a true-life story. Very California. Our new luxe, peached-wash chinos are meant to be rolled-up with a relaxed attitude. Borrowed from the boys and softened by the girls, fabrics like linen and layered 3D knits are all key. Covetable pieces kick off with the Heritage Jacket, the Silk Camp Shirt and a dramatic Wide Leg Denim Trouser. The palette ranges from soft white to cantaloupe to cognac accessories. Among them, the Wristlet Clutch, Slender Belts and the return of the Cross-body Bag.

LIFESTYLE GROOMING FOR HIM

Remington Vacuum Beard & Grooming Kit

Shiseido Men Total Revitalizer Eye

A good quality trimmer is essential if you’re a man with a beard and want it to look its absolute best. However, in the past using one either resulted in a mess of beard clippings on the bedroom floor or – something I’ve experienced myself – a blocked bathroom sink. Thankfully, Remington has solved the little ‘mess problem’ with their new Vacuum Beard & Grooming Kit. As well as packing the kind of features you’d expect in a trimmer (adaptable length settings, cordless action and a precision detailing tool amongst them) it includes a handy vacuum which collects beard clippings as you trim and stores them away in an easy-to-empty chamber

With some of the most delicate skin on the body, eyes are naturally one of the first areas to show signs of fatigue and premature ageing. No wonder, then, that they need a little extra TLC when it comes to skincare. Regular moisturisers are often too heavy for the eye area so a dedicated eye cream or gel is essential. This brand new one from Shiseido, available from the end of May, answers all your ocular needs. As well as hydrating and firming skin around the eye area it also contains a raft of ingredients designed to stimulate collagen production.

King Of Shaves Hyperglide More than four years in the making, King Of Shaves’ new Hyperglide razor eschews superficial design tweaks and extra blades for something altogether more revolutionary. Once the razor hits water the entire shaving head becomes selflubricating, delivering a super-smooth shave with the minimum of friction. What’s more, because of the way it works, you can even do away with traditional shaving preps if you wish, making it perfect for travel, gym bags and office drawers. Clever!

THE MINI PACEMAN AND MINI COUNTRYMAN BRING MORE VARIETY AND DRIVING FUN TO THE PREMIUM COMPACT SEGMENT Although they share the same genes, the MINI Paceman is clearly the crazy cousin of the already successful MINI Countryman Both the MINI Countryman and MINI Paceman fuse hallmark MINI proportions and design features with their own individual characters. The MINI Countryman cuts a robust and versatile figure, highlighting its ability to push back the boundaries of urban mobility. The MINI Paceman likewise exudes power and presence, the gently downward-sloping coupé roofline, long doors, side windows tapering towards the rear and muscular tail helping to push the three-door newcomer’s sporting elegance immediately to the forefront. Its standard specification includes lowered sports suspension – a clear show of confidence in its ability to exploit both the power of its engines and the talents of its ALL4 all-wheel-drive system to deliver unbeatable agility on city streets and twisty country roads alike. A line-up of two powerful engines with six-speed automatic gearbox are available with outputs ranging from 122hp to 184 hp. The MINI Countryman and MINI Paceman converge again at the top end of the output scale, both providing the basis for enthralling John Cooper Works high-performance models. The MINI John Cooper Works Paceman and MINI John Cooper Works Countryman are powered by race-bred turbocharged engines unleashing 160 kW/218 hp onto the road through all four wheels thanks to the standard ALL4 system. There is little to choose between the two models in terms of sprint times (0 to 100 km/h [62 mph] in 6.9 and 7.0 seconds respectively), but the somewhat lighter and more aerodynamically efficient three-door model has a slight performance edge. ALL4 can be specified for three engine variants of both the MINI Paceman and the MINI Countryman. In each case, the engine’s power is distributed seamlessly between the front and rear axles by an electromagnetic centre differential. The ALL4 system’s control electronics are integrated directly into the management unit of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system. This ensures power is sent where it is needed in all road and weather conditions. Fast and precise reactions to changing situations mean these systems not only optimise traction and driving stability, but also increase agility through dynamically taken corners. The load capacity of the MINI Paceman can be increased from 330 litres to as much as 1,080 litres by folding down the rear seat backrests. The Countryman comes as standard with a three-seat rear bench, whose backrests can be split and folded 40 : 20 : 40, increasing boot capacity from 350 litres to a maximum 1,170 litres. Both models can be ordered with optional model-specific storage packages to raise functionality another notch. In keeping with MINI tradition, the personalisation options available for the MINI Paceman and MINI Countryman boast extraordinary breadth and depth. Exterior paint finishes, contrast colours for the roof and exterior mirror caps, light-alloy wheels, bonnet stripes and Sport Stripes, interior colours, seat upholstery options, interior trim strips and Colour Lines constitute the basis for configurations tailored precisely to the owner’s personal style.

JOHN MAYER SUES CHARLIE SHEEN’S BESTIE OVER ALLEGED FAKE WATCHES

When John Mayer put out an album called “Battle Studies,” this probably wasn’t what he had in mind. The singer/songwriter filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Charlie Sheen’s sometime digital manager and publicist Bob Maron, claiming that Maron sold him $5 million worth of what he believed were authentic, vintage Rolex watches but later discovered several had counterfeit parts. According to the suit, Mayer describes Maron — who is also a co-executive producer on Sheen’s FX show “Anger Management” — as “a self-described preeminent expert on wristwatches and person of impeccable integrity, and was, plaintiff believed, plaintiff’s trusted friend.” Sheen said about his friend. “He’s the most astute player in the game. He truly is, in my opinion, the market maker.” Other clients of Maron’s include Mayer’s ex Jennifer Aniston, as well as Orlando Bloom and Richie Sambora.

STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 It is the fashion issue for STUDENTALK, we decided to be more innovative with the horoscope, thus we tried to correspond your star sign with your fashion style.

Aries Man:

Passion and excitement are reflected in the color red, so it’s an obvious choice to represent the Aries man. You’ll not see him wear a suit of red (except at Christmas, maybe), but don’t be surprised to have him sporting a bright crimson shirt as part of his casual attire.

Aries Woman:

kourtney kardashian

Lady Gaga

Robert Downey Jr

Aries women love red, as befits a fire sign. Her wardrobe spills over with all sorts of shapes, silhouettes, colors, and fabrics. A little bling never hurts either and Aries women usually wear sparkling accessories to accentuate their look. Aries women can also do casual quite well. Sporty clothes appeal to her.
