I had known her as a child and have not seen her for quite a long time, so I cannot tell you how happy and impressed I was to see how she has grown up, graduated with honors from a top university, and yet… That beautiful young girl was troubled. No, not with fear of finding a good job. Not with concerns of family, friends or, God forbid, health. Not with the economic or political situation… Her troubles were of a different nature. A nature I only know too well.

For what it’s worth (and in my humble experience), living for others, for goals greater than yourself, helps defeat the heaviness of existentialism. Sometimes life forces us to face adversity and accept bitter realities, to master such strength one needs a reason. And what is more noble a reason than the greater good, the good of others? May you be able to dedicate your lives to the good of others,

COVER STORY

SHAMAYEL AL-QAOUD

ADVOCATING CHANGE WITHIN INDIVIDUALS IN THE KUWAITI SOCIETY In a world that promotes constant change, Shamayel Al-Qaoud, the Founder of Fashionet, decided to invest in Kuwaiti individuals as she believes that they will be the future assets for the Kuwaiti society. Shifting away from fashion, Al-Qaoud successfully changed individuals lives from the inside and outside by through a mentorship learning experience at MakeoverFashionet. The main focus of the program was to change the unhealthy habits, whether in diet or in social life, and integrate new healthy habits in a course of 3 months. She was able to connect companies to individuals by promoting for Corporate Social Responsibility. STUDENTALK Magazine had the pleasure of knowing the successful outcomes from MakeoverFashionet through the interview with Al-Qaoud.

What instigated the Fashionet Company to start on the MakeoverFashionet? MakeoverFashionet is a program revolves around Corporate Social Responsibility, that provides people with the opportunity of “giving back to the community” with companies and individuals. When we open a magazine or a newspaper, we find advertisements about the perfect body shape. Yet, we forget about becoming healthy and working on your skills. Inner beauty will last, thus, it is important to work on it. The ideas behind MakeoverFashionet is concept of implementing makeover in people’s lives. It all started when I opened a fashion company, I realised there is no appreciation to stylists, art directors, mainly people working in the fashion market. Eventually, there was an exponential rise in Social Media -Instagram- which lead people to advertise only for international brands. People became attached to technology that they forgot about making a difference in their lives. I paused, looking deeply into what I do and thought of renovating my previous company in order to make a difference. Then, it clicked to “MakeoverFashionet.” It invests in the individual in order to give back to the community.

Who provided the necessary support for MakeoverFashionet? As the problem consists of participants who were guided by the mentors and sponsors, I would like to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of them. The companies that were investing in the participants in terms of Social Corporate Responsibility were: Al Shamel Travel: They helped us travel to Paris as an award for the participants. Basma clinic: Dental Care. Al Seef Hospital: Full body check up. Diet Care: Dietitian Plan. Acanthi School: Etiquette and personality alteration. Al Soor Center: Mental Therapy Mens Salon: Men’s Physical Alteration Laila Gallery Salon: Women’s Physical Alteration Spa Aqua tonic: Water Sports and Massages Edge Gym: Physical Activities Crown Plaza Hotel As for the mentors that supported and educated the participants were: Hanadi Khazaal Hamza Taqi Sara Al-Shemmery Ghader Khaja Dr Abdulaziz Al-Rsheed Neda Al-Daihani Mona Abdul Razag Rana Abdul Razag Salah Al-Jemaz

‫قصة الغالف‬

How did the successful outcomes affect your daily life routine? The duration of the makeover program is three months. The participants were gathered every Mondays and Wednesdays to walk and enjoy a group activity. In these two days, we create workshops with different mentors who educate the participants on several aspects such as positivity, unique attributes and future role models. Thanks to Diet care, the participants enjoyed a healthy diet regime for three months and from Spa Aqua tonic, they had the ability to aqua activities and slimming messages. The participants also had the opportunity to have dental care from Basma Clinic, a personality makeover through Etiquette classes, and medical checkups from Al Seef Hospital.

After the life changing experience, what advice would you provide STUDENTALK readers? It is important to love yourself and surround yourself with positive people in order to have an accomplished life. You want to see a change in your community, you must be the change! In this way, you will achieve the ultimate self-satisfaction as you will be the person you would wish to meet one day In the end, I would like to take this opportunity to Thank all the Fashionet members who have been committed from the beginning to the end and all my family and friends who believed in me

The fruitful learning experience that the participant enjoyed is unforgettable. We have provided the classes, medical checkups and the overall body care based on individual cases yet in a group. We have integrated our mentorship experience in their daily life for three months in order for the new experience to eliminate their old habits. Their motivation, commitment and enthusiasm was what kept them passionate about it until the end. As a result, we created an ongoing life changing experience that can be carried on after the mentorship experience was over.

In what ways do you think that the makeover experience influences people through social media? As I mentioned before, the usage of Social Media has increased especially in Kuwait where people are using Instagram not only as a method to socialize but also to promote for the own businesses. As a result, it led in spreading awareness about the program and the progress of the participants. It was a great pleasure knowing that we provided people with the necessary information through the participants experience. The audience knew about the importance of medical checkups, exercising and eating healthy food. The program provided a learning experience for the audience through witnessing the similarities with their personal problems between themselves and the participants. Thus, they had the opportunity to know the ways of solving their problems whether it is regarding health or personal life. Also, the program provided daily tips to the audiences. Through the participants experience with our sponsors, the program was informing the audience on the different serves that are available in Kuwait.

STUDENT LIFE INTERVIEW

ESSA ALAIDROS ALHASHIMI

DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALITY TRAITS STUDENTALK’s May Issue is all about health and as the psychological health is very important for the human mind and body, we are introducing to you Essa Alaidros Al-Hashimi, a physiognomic, who will analyze your personality through handwriting, signature and your favorite colors. AlAidros became an expert in that field which allowed him to study the facial expressions. Through our interview, you will be able to know more about Alaidros’s personal experience with physiognomic studying and how he was able to develop his skills.

Why didn’t you consider majoring in Psychology? I am an example of those divergent students that major in something that is completley different from what they are doing on the side. I am majoring in Finance, but my love for Physiognomy and the need to understand humanity is undeniably consuming my time. I didn’t major in it because in Kuwait such a major doesn’t give you strong support and stability. Thus, I went old school and starting reading books, applying the theoretical concepts and making it practical. In addition, I started taking courses about analyzing personalities. My first experience with physiognomic was when my tutor, Saood Al-Awam analyzed me with such detailed, I was astonished. He gave me details no one knew about me including himself. Basically, I was the patient before I became the doctor.

How do you manage your time between studying and your part time job? Generlly in life, one can never be fully successful at several things at the same time without sacrificing something that has a great deal of meaning to you. In my case sadly, it was my GPA, but, now I am balancing and things are better.

First of all, the most beneficial aspect is that from a distance I can perceive people’s qualities and attributes as well as their true nature. The best personal benefit is that it allowed me to compared myself with other’s issues which eventually allowed me to be thankful and grateful for what I have. Moreover, it made my judgment a hundred times better, and I can see all the tiny details that not anyone else can see.

What is the most difficult aspect about studying people?

Any last words?

One of the most significant side effects was when I started learning,I was testing on it my family and analyzing the personalities of my loved ones. That lead me to see things I didn’t want to see and discover un-needed information. I was accepting the ugly truth. Slowly with time I tried to accept the true reality, “we all have hidden secrets; that we ourselves don’t want to admit.” As a result, I started to accept and keep those things to myself. Especially since I noticed that the majority of the people I analyze would never accept the negativity about themselves. They would agree with all that is positive and reject what is unbecoming.

28

What did you gain from being a personality analyzer?

I would like to thank Saood Al-Awam for all his help and support. I would also like to say something out of experience; I want to say that “everything is possible, even the impossible can happen. It may even be happening while you are sitting right now.”

Everything is possible, even the impossible can happen. It may even be happening while you are sitting right now

Arabic Literature Club Organizes Calligraphy Workshop The Arabic Literature Club of the American University of Kuwait (AUK) organized a workshop entitled “The Art of Arabic Calligraphy” run by the calligrapher Jassem Al Nasrullah. The 5-day workshop introduced the participants to cultural and historical information about the different types of artistic Arabic fonts with special emphasis on the Thuluth font; a type of Islamic script developed around the 11th century. That was the first workshop of its kind to be organized by the Arabic Literature Club, and it was open to the public The aim of the workshop was to help amateur calligraphers to develop their calligraphy skills. Al Nasrullah’s approach in training the participants involved perfecting their letter-drawing techniques, which led to complete word development, and finally the creation of full sentences. By the end of the course, each participant was required to write a verse or quote from the Holy Quran on a final poster to be evaluated by the Al Nasrullah.

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD LOCAL BUSINESS

KUWAITI LOCAL BUSINESS

JOANNA AL-SARRAF

A MOTHER-DAUGHTER FASHION EXPERIENCE At an early age, Joanna Al-Sarraf embarked in the fashion industry after her university graduation through BrownBoteek. Traveling around the world to attend shows, she successfully brought several iconic items to Kuwait that caters both to the younger and elder generations. With the usage of Social Media, BrownBoteek built strong brand loyalty amongst its customers for almost 18 years. To know more about Al-Sarraf’s experience with starting her own business, the brands at BrownBoteek and the methods they used to build brand loyalty, here is her interview with STUDENTALK Magazine.

What instigated your passion in fashion while working in the corporate world? My mother started the business 18 years ago and when I came back from college I started to travel with her to all the shows and we slowly realized we made a good team. Clients responded to our combined taste and we started to get a feel for the changing trends. Mature ladies started to dress trendier and younger girls started to dress in a more sophisticated manner earlier on and we decided to cater to that closing style gap.

How does BrownBooteek accentuate its uniqueness amongst other local Kuwaiti boutiques? Our uniqueness stems from the variety of our brands chosen on a seasonal basis. We enjoy changing it up and don’t commit to any brands for exclusivity. Though our stores in both Tala Center Salmiya and Shuwaikh Market are smaller than what we prefer, they give the feeling of Pandora’s box with the opportunity to enjoy shopping our 40 favorite brands from all over the world.

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

In what ways does BrownBooteek incorporates Social Media in order to increase its interaction with its customers? We have Instagram presence for the two stores @brownbooteek and @ brownluxe and we try to update it on a daily basis as a way to give our loyal followers and sneak peak of the latest arrivals.

When is the right time for anyone to start their own business? When they are ready for the challenge and ready to dedicate their days and nights to making their idea come to life. It is a big responsibility and takes a lot of energy.

If BrownBoteek could speak, what would it want to say to the STUDENTALK readers? BrownBoteek would want to thank all our loyal clients. We love it when shoppers tell us they used to frequently come to the store as children and then bought their first ‘grown up’ Eid outfit from BrownBoteek. It is a pleasure to know that we helped them get ready for their freshman year at college and later on for marriage and motherhood. It is always a pleasure to see the familiar faces that later become friends and allow BrownBoteek to be part of their fashion experience. All STUDENTALK readers will have 10%Discount on all the new collection valid until May 31st. Credits for the photography: Kerry Sellers Photography

KUWAITI LOCAL BUSINESS

MONA AL-MUKHAZIEEM, HAIDER AL-MOSAWI & ABDUALLAH AL-SAYER SETTING THE RIGHT PATH FOR TECH STARTUPS

You might witness seminars and conferences for small businesses. However, rarely you would find one for tech startups. STUDENTALK is introducing Sirdab Lab to those who have great tech ideas that would be profitable and valuable to the Kuwaiti community. The founders of Sirdab Lab, Mona Al-Mukhaizeem, Haider Al-Mosawi and Abduallah Al-Sayer, along with team members, Abdullah Al-Hussainan and Ghalia Faraj, have been working together to provide a friendly environment where talented mindsets can share ideas, seek funding, communicate with mentors, connect startups with network events and host entrepreneurial events. All these facilities at Dasman Complex are offered at an affordable price. Technology is moving at a such a fast pace, that if you do not work on your idea promptly, someone else will. To know more about how you can obtain all the essential help from bureaucratic to educational, keep reading this fruitful interview by STUDENTALK Magazine.

38

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

What are the problems that Sirdab Lab aims to solve? Kuwait’s entrepreneurial system is very fragmented. Existing clusters of startup initiatives don’t communicate with each other. We provide entrepreneurs with a network of enthusiastic, like-minded people who are ready to collaborate and to build successful startups together. We offer a community of ambitious people, generous mentors, and smart investors looking to fund promising startups. We connect people through networking events, 1:1 and group mentoring sessions, ideation meet-ups, pitch nights and much more. We also provide a startup friendly co-working space in Kuwait at Dasman Complex that offers more than just a very cool office with a young vibe at an affordable price. It is where ideas, talents and funds meet. In this space everyone is encouraged to come pitch ideas and get feedback use the meeting room for private meetings, host entrepreneurial events or use the facilities provided for our members. The team behind Sirdab Lab has worked in or with tech startups (in Kuwait and Silicon Valley), and we know what struggles startups face. Unfortunately, a startup is smaller than a small business, and not necessarily a business (yet). Sirdab Lab aims to help tech startups in every way possible, from refining the idea to taking it globally. There are many people with great app ideas that can be extremely profitable, and valuable. How many times have you seen an app become popular and someone says: “I had this idea years ago, but I didn’t work on it.” Well, having the idea is not enough. And that’s where Sirdab Lab can help. The details of our programs will soon be published on our website.

What are the problems that the Kuwaiti local businesses are encountering in our society? There are many different kinds of problems. From bureaucratic (getting a business license, or knowing what license to apply for in the first place) down to marketing your business in a crowded space. We want to help entrepreneurs in every way possible. We don’t want entrepreneurs to let these obstacles stand in their way. One of the other main challenges we face in our society is fear of failure. This is human nature but in our culture it is especially frowned upon to fail. In other communities, where startups flourish, failure is widely embraced because it is viewed as a learning experience, thus ventures prefer to fact, some venture capitalists prefer not to invest in a team with previous “learning experience” as they have more knowledge than a team with a first attempt.

How can the emerging entrepreneurs benefit from Sirdab Lab? We help entrepreneurs build their product, collaborate with others, get funding, as well as offer educational programs from experts in their fields. We have a space where entrepreneurs can work, an extensive mentor network (that spans the entire globe), and we’re growing a list of service providers that can offer their services at discounted rates.

In what ways can Sirdab Lab guarantee local businesses a successful business experience? Anyone who offers a guarantee for business success is lying to you. Don’t fall for it! There are no guarantees in business, much less a startup. What we do help with is reducing the time, effort, cost, and stress related to building a startup. In addition, we’ll make the experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

What are Sirdab Lab’s future plans? In the near future, we’ll be offering a comprehensive accelerator program that helps tech startups take their ideas globally. In the distant future, it’s too soon to tell. Tech space is constantly evolving and we need to remain flexible to changing demands and circumstances.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank STUDENTALK Magazine, you’re one of our favorite publications! We would also like to encourage everyone who has a question to just drop us a line or just say Hi. We are very approachable and love to listen for ideas and feedback.

SOCIAL DIWANEYA TIPS FOR BETTER YOU

Healthy Hair We, girls, tend to relate our emotional stability with our outward appearance; for example, having a bad hair day would put us through emotional pain, as we would have identified something imperfect in ourselves that we have to live through publically for a whole day; this would imbalance our emotional strength and set us in a bad mood for that day. However, what if you can avoid having a bad hair day all together – this means that whether or not you do your hair before you go out, it would still look good! Here are some tips I have picked up and have found to be very useful

1

First you want a hair with volume, and to obtain that you must avoid hair loss. As students, mothers, or hard workers, we tend to go under a lot of stress, and this stress leads to hair loss. One way to treat this symptom is to try to minimise the amount of stress you go under – avoid arguments, provide yourself a planner with a to-do list, and have faith in yourself and in your future.

2

Maintain a healthy diet! This is one of the most important steps to maintain a healthy body, healthy hair, healthy nails,

3

The third on the list is hair treatment. Just like how your body needs nourishments, so does your hair! There are many natural treatments, that you can make at home, which can strengthen your hair and give it a beautiful, healthy, gleam. These natural masks can consist of oils, fruits, and general components like eggs, honey, and yogurt. However, if you don’t have the time to make them as well as put them on your hair, or if you don’t like getting your hands dirty, there are many hair salons that have them ready and would treat your hair for a reasonable price.

4

After putting any kind of hair mask on your head, you’re going to have to wash it out, which brings us to step number four. This may be an awkward subject, but washing your hair the right way is crucial. If the shampoo remains in your hair, your hair will end up looking oily and greasy, and it will absorb the chemicals in the shampoo which can

40

damage your scalp. Nonetheless, washing your hair too much can also damage your hair; there are chemicals in these shampoos that would break and dry your hair, which would increase the hair loss. Therefore, the amount of times you wash your hair should depend on the type of hair you use (whether it’s dry, oily, or regular), and the type of shampoo, conditioner, and hair cream you use.

5

After a shower, the most typical step is drying your hair. Many people tend to rub the hair with a towel, brush it, blow dry it, and then perhaps straightening it; however, that is not very good for the hair. Firstly, rubbing your hair with a towel would only damage the hair, and so you should simply tap it, or scrunch the water out of it; secondly, wait around 20-30 minutes before you brush your hair. Finally, you should avoid blow-drying or straightening your hair as much as you can to avoid burning or impairing it.

6

The final step, and it can be a bonus, is Henna! It strengthens the hair, treats damage hair, brings colour and life to the hair, and provides it with the liveliness and volume it needs. I understand that it may not smell very pleasant, but the best part about it is that it can work as factor of step three; meaning, it can be added to mixtures and the smell would be hidden. And with this I shall conclude: as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a German poet, says, “Beware of her fair hair, for she excels All women in the magic of her locks...”

THE UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

Joint statement by heads of UN humanitarian agencies on Syria One year ago, as leaders of UN agencies struggling to deal with the growing human impact of the Syrian crisis, we issued an urgent ap-peal on behalf of millions of people whose lives and futures hang in the balance: Enough, we said, enough! That appeal has gone largely unanswered. The war escalates in many areas. The humanitarian situation deteriorates day after day. And for the civilians remaining in the cities of Aleppo and the Old City of Homs, as well as other parts of the country experiencing heavy fighting, the worst days seem yet to come. As the fighting has intensified in recent weeks, at least one million people are now in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in Aleppo alone. The road from Damascus to Aleppo - a vital lifeline – has often been cut. 1.25 million people are in need of food in Aleppo city and rural parts of the governorate. Other key roads are blocked by different armed forces and groups. All too often, humanitarian access to those in need is being denied by all sides. Aerial bom-bardment, rockets, mortars and other indiscriminate attacks slaughter innocent men, women, and children. In Aleppo it is reported that there are now only 40 doctors for a population of 2.5 mil-lion people once there were more than 2,000 - and medical supplies are scarce. The city is sur-rounded on all sides. Across Syria, the lives of more than 9.3 million people are now affected in this, the fourth year of conflict. With a third of the nation’s water treatment plants no longer functioning, with 60 per cent of health centres destroyed, and with some 3.5 million people living in areas under siege or unable to be reached with humanitarian assistance, the innocent civilians of Syria seem to be surviving on sheer courage. As humanitarian agencies, working closely with international and national non-governmental organizations, we are doing all we can to save lives and alleviate suffering - even in the face of great danger to, and sacrifice by, our colleagues on the ground. But we know that what we can do is not sufficient. Not nearly so. If we are to do more, to reach and help more people, those engaged in this horrific conflict, and those with influence over them, must do more.

42

‫المفوضية السامية لألمم المتحدة لشوؤن الالجئين‬

Today, we call upon all parties to this brutal conflict to take urgent action to: Enable unconditional humanitarian access to all people in need, using all available routes either across lines inside Syria or across its borders. - Lift the sieges on civilians currently being imposed by all sides, such as those now seal-ing off parts of Aleppo, the Old City of Homs, Yarmouk, East Ghouta, Moadhamieh, Nubl and Zahra. - End the indiscriminate bombing and shelling of civilians by the Government and opposi-tion groups and stop all other violations of international humanitarian law. Thus far, diplomatic efforts designed to end years of suffering have failed. What have not failed are the courage and determination of extraordinary Syrian civilians to survive. Can those with the responsibility and the power and the influence to stop this terrible, tragic war find the same courage? The same will? How did you develop your talent? I had the enthusiasm and the motivation to spend the time and effort to develop the talent I enjoy. As we all know practice makes perfect and which such talent like football free-styling, practicing is a must in order to keep up with old moves and to be able to create new moves. Also, I usually practice football free-styling with my friends to make it more enjoyable and to get more insights from my friends for further development.

Sometimes we think we do not have many talents or that other people have been blessed with more abilities than we possess. Sometimes we do not use our talents because we are afraid that we might fail or be criticized by others. We should not hide our talents. We should use them.

Who supported your talent? Family and friends were always around me to cheer for me. However, I would like to express my gratitude to my father who has been supporting me through the thick and thin.

Introduce yourself to the readers. My name is Mohamed Kerow. I’m 23 years old. I have been leaving in Kuwait for almost 14 years. I’m a big fan in futsal skill (indoor football).

What is your talent? My talent is performing football free-style. Basically doing tricks with the ball.

How did you develop your talent? First time I saw free-styling was by the popular football player named Ronaldinho. When he did the trick called “flip flap” and also the “around the world”, this amused me and ever since I start practicing doing tricks and upgrading my skills. I have been practicing everyday till I get the tricks correct and start using in the games.

What are your future plans? Playing professional now a days is difficult. You need to fight to reach the top of the game but the new era of football has come out called futsal. It’s basically playing indoor 5-a-side game. However, I have participated in tournaments and leagues ever since I started playing. My dream is to play in the well-known tournaments in Kuwait like Al-Roudan and the Futsal League.

Did you encounter any obstacles? In Kuwait they have some rules for playing in clubs so I have faced those problems which didn’t allow me participate in top clubs here. Except Al-Sahel Sporting Club, they have accepted me. I played with them for a full season for the under-21 team. I have left the club to finish my studies.

Who supported your talent? I would like to thank my family and friends who have supported and advised. Even untill today, they still support me, so I have to thank them for that!

Any last words for the readers? I would share my experience by saying this “don’t let someone who gave up on their dreams to talk you out of yours, you do what have to do.” I would like to thank STUDENTALK Magazine for letting me share my talent and hope everyone enjoy it. Thanks and one love to everyone. Are you a student in Kuwait with a talent that deserves to be seen? If so then here is your chance, STUDENTALK wants you! Email us at info@ph7-kw.com

EAMON ISSA The Most Talented Competition for April 2014 To win or not to win, that is the question! Thanks to your outstanding votes on wwww.studentalk-online.com, Eamon Issa won the STUDENTALK Talent Competition for the April Issue as an actor. STUDENTALK Magazine extends its warm congratulations to Issa. We wanted to know more about his acting experience that’s why we asked him the following questions:

How did you develop your talent? My talents are many but my main ones would have to be writing, comedy and acting. They all involve forms of expression, which is a particular skill I am quite fond of. Mainly through an incredible dose of luck, along with no little bit of skill. Acting is a new pursuit for me as I only started in late 2012 with no background in it at all. It was an easy fit though. I’ve always been eloquent with word and gesture so I picked it up easily and my enthusiasm for acting has only grown with time.

What are your future plans? I plan to finish my English Literature degree before either pursuing a career in teaching, as I’ve developed a fondness for tutoring people in English, or taking a further degree in Drama and seeing where my acting talent will take me.

Did you encounter any obstacles? Not especially. People on the whole have been incredibly positive about my foray into the field of theatre so it was an easy transition. I believe everyone deserves that kind of support when they are pursuing something they find fascinating.

Who supported your talent? My parents and friends have pretty much been all “Go Eamon! You can do it!” in spirit, if not in words. It certainly helps that I’m actually good at what I do though.

Any last words for the readers? If you don’t know what you want to do in life then I suggest trying as many different things as possible to discover what you like. I took a drama class on a whim because it looked fun but I never knew I would develop such a passion for it. No matter what you may think you know about life, it can and will always

Samsung Phone S5 The Samsung Galaxy S5 can be defined by one word: evolution. The camera has evolved to give clearer and faster snaps. The fitness-tracking abilities of the S5 are enhanced over the Galaxy S4 by packing in a more powerful S Health app and a dedicated heart rate monitor on the rear. A fingerprint scanner adds to the most secure Galaxy phone ever made. The battery is larger, the screen bigger and brighter, the processor quicker and the design altered. The spec sheet certainly doesn’t let it down: a 2.5GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 2800mAh (removable) battery, 16 / 32GB of memory (with up to 128GB extra through microSD), one of the world’s most vibrant screens that’s been extended to 5.1-inches and added biometrics.

Samsung Gear Watch Your phone is way too big and unwieldy -- what you need is a smaller second screen to let you know what’s going on with ease. At least, that’s what Samsung reckons. Its new Galaxy Gear Smartwatch lets you take calls, send texts, and perform various other tasks from your wrist without touching your phone. The Gear has no SIM card or data connection of its own. Instead, it links to your phone over Bluetooth, acting more as an external display so you don’t have to fish your phone out every time it rings. Samsung’s Gear is among the first smartwatches we’ve seen from a major mobile manufacturer and is intended to lead the way in the emerging field of wearable, connected technology. Exciting stuff, sure, but I’m certainly not bowled over by it.

Sony QX10 and QX100 mobile cameras Sony has introduced a pair of digital cameras which are designed to attach directly to your smartphone. The QX10 and QX100 are 18- and 20-megapixel cameras (respectively) that clip onto your smartphone, which is used to operate the camera and view photos. The compact QX10 has a 1/2.3” 18-megapixel sensor and 10X zoom lens, while the QX100 has a large 1-inch-type sensor and fast 3.6X zoom lens. The QX100 is essentially a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II without an LCD. The cameras are priced at $250 and $500, respectively. The camera and smartphone are linked via Wi-Fi (with NFC capability), and everything is controlled with Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app for iOS and Android. If you want, you can take photos without a smartphone (as the cameras have physical controls) and transfer the photos later.

Ralph Zarazir Dental Implants

Dr. Ralph F. Zarazir is a visiting Dental Surgeon & Implantologist at SAMA Dental Center. He graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the Saint Joseph University, Beirut, LEBANON, and besides his masters in Oral Surgery & Dental Implantology, he holds a University Diploma in Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry. Being part of the teaching stuff at the faculty as a Senior Lecturer & Clinical Instructor, he also holds a Masters in Medical Sciences. We met & interviewed Dr. Zarazir during his last visit to SAMA Dental Center.

What is a dental implant? Also known as an end-osseous implant or fixture, a dental implant is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw to support a dental prosthesis (prosthesis is a term that defines crowns, Bridges or Dentures). Once an implant is screwed into the bone, bone cells that circulate in that area with the blood flow, known as osteoblasts, are behind a biological process called Osseo-integration that links & stabilizes the titanium implant (mainly all new generation dental implants are made of titanium) to the adjacent bone walls prepared by drilling, forming a very intimate and strong bond between the metallic piece & the patient’s maxilla or mandible. This process takes several weeks before an implant is ready to receive the dental prosthesis.

What can be expected after receiving a dental implant?

There are commonly three parts to what is described as an implant - The implant device itself, which is inserted directly into the bone) - The abutment; a piece that connects the implant device to the third part - The overlying crown or denture, representing the final & functional stage.

As you know, your own teeth require conscientious at-home oral care and regular dental visits. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same care. In order to keep your implant clean and plaquefree, keep brushing and flossing regularly & efficiently! After treatment, the oral surgeon will work closely with you and your dentist to develop the best care plan. Periodic follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your implant, teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.

What is a dental implant procedure like?

What are the advantages of a dental implant?

What are the different parts of a dental implant?

This procedure is a team effort between you as a patient, your dentist and the oral surgeon. Your dentist will discuss & explain to you about this treatment & then he will agree with the surgeon on how your implant should be placed. Depending on your specific condition and the type of implant chosen, the oral surgeon will create a treatment plan tailored to meet your needs. • Replacing a Single Tooth If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it. • Replacing Several Teeth If you are missing several teeth, implantsupported bridges can replace them. • Replacing All of Your Teeth If you are missing all of your teeth, an implant-supported full bridge or full denture can replace them. • Sinus Augmentation A key to implant success is the quantity and quality of the bone where the implant is to be placed. The upper back jaw has traditionally been one of the most difficult areas to successfully place dental implants due to insufficient bone quantity and quality and the close proximity to the sinus. Sinus augmentation can help correct this problem by raising the sinus floor and developing bone for the placement of dental implants.

62

• Ridge Modification Post extraction deformities in the upper or lower jaw can leave you with inadequate bone in which to place dental implants. To correct the problem, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose the bony defect. The defect is then filled with bone or bone substitute to build up the ridge. Ridge modification has been shown to greatly improve appearance and increase your chances for successful implants that can last for years to come.

Dental implants reduce the load on the remaining oral structures/teeth by offering independent support and retention to crowns, bridgework and over-dentures. Dental implants preserve natural tooth tissue by avoiding the need to cut down adjacent teeth for conventional bridgework. Dental implants will preserve bone and significantly reduce bone resorption and deterioration that results in loss of jawbone height & width. Dental implants have been shown to reduce the need for subsequent restorative intervention of adjacent teeth. Long-term data on implants suggest that implants last for a much longer time than conventional restorations on teeth. Loose fitting dentures can be replaced with improved support, stability and retention with implant over dentures. Over dentures will help control/improve facial contours that result in minimizing premature wrinkles. Implant over dentures may allow you to chew your food better and speak more clearly. Many studies have shown that over dentures contribute to improved chewing efficiency and speaking, compared to full dentures.

PORSCHE 911 CABRIOLET A SPORTS CAR WITH AN ELEGANT LOOK

With the wind blowing my hair driving the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, allow STUDENTALK to tell you about exciting experience riding this sports car that has the comfort/ elegance for a day to day lifestyle and the acceleration speed of 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec. The highly efficient, state-of-the-art engines make a considerable contribution. The experience started with the push of a button, the engine becomes tuned for a sharper response and engine dynamics that are even more direct. The 911 engines are also unmistakably sporty thanks to the SPORT button fitted as standard. The engine has increased maximum torque by which power output can be increased, however, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by up to 16% compared with the previous model creating an eco-friendly environment. The Cabriolet uses power intelligently with an active all-wheel-drive system, an electronically variable map-controlled multi-plate clutch, automatic brake differential (ABD) and anti-slip regulation (ASR).This “electronically controlled; fully variable multi-plate clutch controls the distribution of power between the primarily driven rear axial and the front axial (Traction). By continually monitoring the driving conditions enables the vehicle to respond to a variety of situations as-well as sensors to check rotation speeds of all four wheels. For example, if the rear wheels threaten to spin due to acceleration; a greater proportion of drive force is distributed to the front by a more powerful engagement of the multiplate clutch. When turning corners the front wheels only receives enough drive-force that is necessary to prevent instability. Now try and flip this one over!!

‫أخبار رياضة‬

These are only a short list of the attributes of the Porsche 911 Cabriolet but enough of that… should we move on to the accessories? Let’s start with one of the top high-end audio equipment worldwide Burmester meets Porsche. A combination of two iconic German manufactures coming together to ensure no less than top luxury sound system. Another element of the Porsche identity, the CDR audio system with a 7-inch color touch screen. The silhouette also looks more elegant and, when the roof is down, it folds into a smaller space than the old one for better open top visuals too. With a glass rear screen and three individual and integral elements, this makes the roof highly robust and, yet, particularly lightweight. Another benefit is that the roof is smooth and firm. The fabric remains taut keeping the familiar 911 lines elegant. In addition to the choice of Black, Platinum Grey, Luxor Beige and Yachting Blue for the interior, there is a wide range of other personalization options available, including two-tone color combination or special colors and materials such as carbon, aluminum or high-quality wood. Now get this…With child seat in the back and a decent boot in the front, the 911 Cabriolet lives up to its reputation of being the world’s most practical sports car. A sporty, elegant and practical car, what more could we ask for? As STUDENTALK is a fan of Porsche, we have to admit they have out done themselves once again with the Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

SNOOKI PREDICTED THAT SHE AND JWOWW WOULD BE PREGNANT TOGETHER

GEORGE CLOONEY IS ENGAGED TO AMAL ALAMUDDIN

Snooki and Jwoww have grown up from their days on MTV’s “Jersey Shore” — now both are expecting babies and are engaged. Jwoww revealed that Snooki may have predicted the future. “Nicole called it last year on our show, saying that this time next year we’ll be pregnant together, and obviously....I was, like, ‘yeah right.’” And the girls aren’t letting their pregnancies get in the way of their active lifestyles. They’re slamming the critics who think they’re doing too much. Jwoww said, “It’s not a disability. We were snowmobiling when she just found out that she was pregnant. and I was like, what, five months pregnant, and I intend to Jet Ski, hopefully, when I’m nine months pregnant.” Never say never! George Clooney, Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, is going to be a married man once again. The Oscar-winning actor, 52, is engaged to wed 36-year-old British/Lebanese lawyer Amal Alamuddin. The two dined at Japanese restaurant Nobu in Malibu, California, on Thursday, and that Alamuddin was seen flashing her (undoubtedly impressive) ring to Clooney friend Cindy Crawford. The newly engaged couple have a lot to talk about: two areas of law that Alamuddin specializes in are international law and human rights. The philanthropic Clooney has an interest in both. He was arrested last year for protesting in D.C. about human rights in Sudan and became a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a nonpartisan think tank, in 2010.

TAYLOR SWIFT AND SARAH HYLAND TAKE THEIR BESTIE ACT TO OFF-BROADWAY

Taylor Swift and Sarah Hyland arriving for the show. Sarah Hyland brought a showstopper of a date to see the Off-Broadway show “Under My Skin.” The “Modern Family” star, 23, went to check out her father in the play Wednesday night in Manhattan and turned it into a girls’ night out by inviting Taylor Swift, 24, to come along. The gals, who have been hanging out since the fall and rang in the new year together, watched the comedy, then headed backstage to see Sarah’s dad, Edward James Hyland, who plays the part of Poppa Sam. According to an insider, Taylor and Sarah hung out for about a half-hour “talking and congratulating the cast.”

JUSTIN BIEBER DETAINED AT L.A. AIRPORT Justin Bieber can’t go a day without drama. The latest in the 20-year-old singer’s life is that he was held up in customs at Los Angeles International Airport for a reported five hours after arriving on an Air Singapore flight from Tokyo on Thursday afternoon. “We have no comment for the moment,” a rep for Bieber has mentioned. We also have no further information about what customs officers grilled the pop star about. When he finally was able to leave the airport around 6:20 p.m., Justin was clearly more than ready. He strutted through the doors, past paparazzi and excited fans, and into his waiting SUV with four bodyguards

ENTERTAINMENT HOROSCOPE

YOUR HEALTH CONDITIONS ACCORDING TO YOUR STAR SIGN STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21

Have you ever wondered why certain body parts are constantly aching? After extensive research we have found that certain habits can somehow affect your physical health. Here are your health conditions depending on your star sign

Aries Man:

A Taurus man is traditional and prudent. He can be an old-school kind of man who will open doors for you. Thoughtful and sweet, with big, sad eyes, his is a slow, shy kind of charm. His overall goal in life is to have a cozy home, a warm hearth, a true partner, and a good life.

Aries Woman:

Channing Tatum

George Clooney

Chris Brown

As her temper is rarely seen, the Taurus Woman aims for balance in life. She loves nature and desires nothing more than to live in comfortable and colorful surroundings. Although she is clever, she is not interested in proving herself an intellectual for the sake of it and will be content to let her friends shine while she provides the convivial surroundings in which to do it.

Mar 21 - Apr 20 LIBRA

ARIES

The Rams have great energy, strength and stamina. They, however, are susceptible to disorders of the head, stomach and kidneys. They need to take extra care of these parts of their bodies in order for them to enjoy a future healthy lifestyle.

Sep 24 - Oct 23

Apr 21 - May 21

Oct 24 - Nov 22

GEMINI

They are prone to respiratory problems or asthma when young, and flu and viral infections as they grow older. Their arms and legs may also be afflicted by a restlessness sometimes, for which they should exercise regularly.

CANCER LEO

Back pains or related issues of the spine can be a bane for the Lions, though they are by and large of a strong built. If they are not careful with their posture, especially during teenage and adolescence, the backbone can cause severe problems later.

AQUARIUS

July 23 - Aug22

CAPRICORN

June 22 - July 22 Crabs are very sensitive and prone to mood swings, which over time can cause anxiety. It is not very difficult for someone to upset them. They need to learn to remain undaunted under all circumstances. A little effort in this direction would save them a lot of medical hassles later on.

SAGITTARIUS

May 22 - June 21

SCORPIO

TAURUS

The Bulls are robust and have great physical stamina from birth, so they are unlikely to suffer any health problems during childhood. But as they grow older they tend to overindulge in food and drink and may put on weight.

PISCES

VIRGO

80

Scorpios not only generally enjoy good health, but their resistance is also good, so when they are faced with a health problem they are quick to recover. They are susceptible to accidents because of their tendency to take risks.

Nov 23 - Dec 21 The Archers are mostly strong, and especially in the early part of their lives rarely face any health issues. However, they need to be careful of their lifestyle in order not to suffer from high blood pressure or more severe disorders affecting the liver.

Dec 22 - Jan 20 Actually, the more the Capricorns age, the healthier they seem to be. They belong to the category which produces the most wonderful elderly people. Their body, though, can be frail, especially the knees and the bone structure.

Jan 21 - Feb 19 They are slim and their digestive system can adjust to different cuisines quite easily. They tend to think and worry too much, which can lead to neurological disorders. Still, they have every chance to live to a ripe old age in good health.

Feb 20 - Mar 20

August 23 - Sep 23 The Virgos are very health conscious and exercise moderation and balance in their diet, as they do in everything else, so it is seldom that they fall sick. This also acts as an automatic defence mechanism against obesity, and its attendant problems.

Libra’s don’t often face health concerns, mainly because of their preoccupation with looking young and beautiful – and doing the needful. But their problem areas can be their back, buttocks, kidneys and bladder.

Pisces have perhaps the frailest physical structure and body mechanism of the whole zodiac. The feet, and respiratory and circulation systems can cause problems. Besides, they are very sentimental people, and easily take to junk food – which can lead to weight gain – and substance abuse.
