I am sure a lot of you have heard of or read the book, and I am sure that many of you, whether realizing it or not, are already practicing some of these habits in your daily lives. However, when the habits are presented to us in simple black and white form, we realize that even though we know these self-evident skills, and we do practice most of them, we invariable miss out on some of the most important ones! Let us start with the simplest one: Feed the golden goose! I will remind you of the story: One day an impoverished farmer discovered that one of his geese laid a golden egg! Happy beyond belief, he rushed to the market, sold it and bought all his needs. On the second day, the same goose laid another golden egg!! Excited, he went to the market, sold it and bought all his desires. So happy was he with this new found fortune, he forgot to feed the goose before going to sleep. Needless to say, the farmer found himself the next day with no golden eggs, and no goose. And guess who the goose is? We are! Our bodies, our minds, our hearts and our souls. Have we been feeding them? All? Or are we expecting to keep pushing ourselves to lay these golden eggs on daily basis while we are starving from the inside? By the time you read this letter, it will be Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, prayer and charitable acts. The month that is aimed to feed our souls. Well, this Ramadan, may I please ask you to start thinking of how you will continue to feed your souls after the month is over? May I ask you to reflect and see how you can also feed the other parts that constitute our lives in the same committed zest? Always remember, this goose is not yours. God created us and He entrusted us with our lives. And that is no light responsibility. May you always be charitable, to others and to yourself,

COVER STORY

PORSCHE TEST DRIVE Body and Design: The new 911 Carrera Cabriolet’s design echoes its predecessor’s styling while developing an entirely new design language. A vehicle height reduced by a further four millimetres, compared with the 911 Carrera Coupé strikes a distinctly sporty tone in outward appearance. With the new Bi-Xenon headlights, they give the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet a distinctive face. The rear end echoes the sporty look of the car’s front end. The new wider rear spoiler below the engine lid air intakes characterizes it in particular. The outer edge of the lid is part of the continuous design edge, which cleverly emphasises the vehicle’s width. The compact dimensions of the redeveloped top system when stowed enable the space above the engine to be used to best effect. The result: an elegantly flat and harmonious rear section.

ALI MAKHSEED

THE YOUNGEST KUWAITI DRIFTER STUDENTALK Magazine is proud to acknowledge Kuwaiti students’ achievements in different sports fields. For this reason, we were proud to interview Ali Makhseed, amongst Kuwait’s best drifters and drag racers. He started his journey playing with remote control cars at a very young age. Now, Makhseed has successfully raced in competitions in Kuwait from the Red Bull Car Drift to several regional competitions in the UAE and Qatar. It was such a pleasure interviewing Ali Makhseed, as we found out a lot about drifting rules and the means to develop the required skills whilst diving into his personal experiences.

How did you establish a solid base in drifting? Most drifters start with karting; however, my passion was instigated through remote control car racing. While most 15 year olds would play soccer, I was engaged with remote car racing. It gave me the skills to control the car without being physically in it. I later began karting. In addition, I started learning about the mechanics of the car because it is important to be involved and educated with the car you are drifting in, as it allows for greater controllability. Eventually, this will facilitate in developing one’s drifting skills. I joined the Red Bull Car Drift and unfortunately came only in 4th place due to my accident. Yet, this did not stop me. I competed in several regional competitions in the UAE and Qatar. I am planning to take my talent to the international level.

‫قصة الغالف‬

The Engine: The model of the engine of the open-top did not change from the older model, however what makes the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet is that it is more renovated. It has been developed according to the principle of Porsche Intelligent Performance, decreasing fuel consumption while increasing output. Courtesy of enhancements within the engine itself, accompanied by the new functions thermal management, onboard electrical system recuperation and auto start/ stop function, the new models are up to 15 per cent more economical and up to 15 hp more powerful. As a result the 911 Carrera remains, by an even greater margin, the benchmark for efficient performance among premium sports cars.

What are the rules and regulations of drifting?

Porsche’s first venture into downsizing within a model range was the flat-six engine in the 911 Carrera, reducing the piston stroke by four millimeters with the total displacement falling from 3.6 to 3.4 liters. The dimensions of the 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine in the Carrera S remained unchanged.

It is like wrestling but with cars! Two cars compete in two rounds. In the first round, the competitor must be the leader, which means he has to be in front of the chaser, drives faster, reach the clipping point hence leaving a longer gap between him and the chaser in order to win the round. In the next round, the leader must be the chaser. This round is the reciprocal of the previous round. The chaser must reach the clipping point and be as close to the leader as possible. However, he should not precede the leader. The scores are accumulated to include the drifting skills, time and the distance between each car.

How can a drifter practice his skills? The first step to practice drifting is forming a strong relationship between yourself and your car. If you are not aware of your car’s capabilities, you might push it to the extreme and end up in a dangerous position. Therefore, I advise upcoming drifters to learn the mechanics of their cars in order to understands various signals. The car sends signals for each situation, whether it is overheated or overused. Sometimes., I talk to my car as if it’s a human being; because once I know the signals, I will recognize the skills required to reach optimum levels of drifting. The second step is to find a track. Unfortunately, the tracks in Kuwait are not similar to the tracks in the drifting competitions. However, this liability could be an asset for the drifters. It will motivate them to create their own tracks at an isolated road with their own clipping points. The drifter should reach the clipping points in a timely manner with different drifting skills. While achieving what was previously mentioned, you must know how to control your car. In drifting, it is imperative to be in control of the car while being out of control while reaching the clipping points.

COVER STORY

Chassis and Control Systems: The 911 Carrera Cabriolet has several features that ensure greater driving stability at high speed. The wheelbase and the wider front track width (46 millimeters for the 911 Carrera Cabriolet and 52 millimeters for the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet) highly improve the responsiveness levels. Moreover, factors that will guarantee optimal driving performance are as follows: The enhanced Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), the new Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, the revamped electromechanical power steering, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), the modified braking system along with the new wheels and tyres. The redesigned front axle is lighter and the front axle cross member is also optimised for stiffness. For further improvement in driving, the new design enhances the anti-dive performance, reducing the dipping of the front end of the car under heavy braking. As for the rear axle, it has been designed for stability and precision, significantly improving the already effective predecessor generation. The multi-link design features a larger supporting base, thereby achieving optimal camber and toe-in stiffness. Increase the driver’s safety at low speed, the active self-alignment of the steering ensures that the steering wheel is automatically returned to the straight-ahead position.

How did you manage your time between drifting and studying? In the beginning, it was really hard as I was in racing, jet skiing and drifting. Due to the lack of time management, unfortunately I did not do well in one of the semesters. However, I set my priorities straight by focusing on one sport, drifting. I managed my time between practicing and studying, which resulted in academic improvement and excelling this semester.

What gave you the courage to join a rather dangerous sport like drifting? Driving recklessly on the road is far more dangerous than drifting. In drifting, there are rules and regulations that must be followed for the safety of the two drifters who are competing against each other. Those who are passionate about drifting, develop a professional way of driving in order to prevent injuries. Even if the other driver makes a mistake, by practicing, you can always dodge it by minimizing your risk. Practice at being in control of your car will help you avoid the other drifter’s mistake. Moreover, drifting cars are now technologically advanced which include several safety facilities. Thus, I highly suggest for those who love the adrenaline rush, it is much safer to practice drifting than driving irresponsibly on the street, which can cause higher risks of car accidents to innocent people who do not practice drifting.

How did your parents support you through drifting? What really helped is that my father is a former drag racer who used to compete. Now, he is the Manager of the Car Museum. He witnessed that I had a passion for drifting and he put me on the test at a young age by taking me karting. As he witnessed that I have potential for drifting, he provided me with all the support I needed.

As you have a sister, would you encourage her to drift? And what if she competes against you? I honestly would not mind at all. I would encourage her to drift if she has the potential to be a drifter. Many might think that women do not have the capabilities to drift. However, in one of the championships I have competed for, in the UAE, a female won the third place. There are a group of Kuwaiti women racers, “Road Rush” who are working hard on setting a path to defining the hidden capabilities and talents of Kuwaiti women. If my sister competes against me, she has to practice really well for the competition. If she wins, I would really be proud of her because then the student would win against the master; just like in the movie “Karate Kid.”

In the end, we asked Makhseed about his future plans in drifting, he mentioned his eagerness to prepare for the Formula Drift - which is exactly like the Formula One but for drifting. Makhseed was advocating STUDENTALK readers to know more about drifting as its popularity is growing at a faster rate than ever. He finally advised students to use it as a way to enjoy the adrenaline rush without recklessly driving.

STUDENT TALK VOICE YOUR OPINION

HIS WITHIN T SECTION

THIS MONTH WE ASKED What are your favorite charitable or non profitable organizations in Kuwait, why?

26

We give the students of Kuwait a platform from which to express their beliefs on the matters that affect them. Here, students receive the opportunity to voice their opinions, whilst allowing others to hear them out.

Rateb Shehadeh, 18 AUK Communication & Media I think during Ramadan, there are several charitable organizations that everyone can provide financial Aid to. I usually check their advertisement on the newspaper and TV.

Farah Hilal, 17 AUK Communication & Media There are many factors that encourage us to be charitable such as religion and that’s why Bait Al-Zakat is one of the most famous charitable organizations in Kuwait.

Malak Gharib, 19 AUK, Marketing and management There are several local organizations that help laborers, I think its a great thing the Kuwaitis are giving and for that I respect them.

Ahmed Ifsisi, 22 AUK Marketing There are several organizations in Kuwait, it does not matter which is the best as they all share the same goal.

Myriam Qutop, 18 AUK Graphic Design Everyone is charitable by nature; we just got to embrace it. That is why there are several people that give to the world without the need to go to a charitable organization.

Jasser Al-Hilaly, 22 AUK, Management & Marketing I think people in Kuwait charitable by nature in a way that they help those around them instead of going to an organization.

STUDENT LIFE INTERVIEW

UNIVERSITY CLUB LEADER

AHMED AL-KHUDARI

PRESIDENT OF THE ACK FILM MAKERS CLUB While being occupied with engineering studies, Ahmed Al-Khudari started the ACK Film Makers Club, to work on what he is passionate about, film making. Al-Khudari is also active off campus activities, as he participated in the “Al-Mubadar” competition. He excelled his way through the competition and was supported by the Industrial Bank of Kuwait in order to start his own visual effects studio. To know more about Al-Khudari’s university activities and his experience in the competition, here is an interview by STUDENTALK Magazine.

Why did you decide to become the President of the ACK FILMMAKERS Club? Studying for Engineering, along with other subjects has been very intense for me as I bounce between classes and labs. For this reason I needed an escape from studying while remaining on campus. Thus, I decided to start the ACK Film Makers Club for my personal break and to enjoy my passion, film making!

What activities were conducted by the ACK FILMMAKERS Club on and off campus? Media and short films particularly are great ways to express oneself, deliver a message, and speak out inner thoughts. For this reason, the Film Makers Club created their first short comedy film “I Am Coming.”It expressed the struggles of university students – touching on topics from college life and studying to the nightmare of finding parking spaces, but in an entertaining way. As we expressed the problem regarding the lack of parking, ACK responded positively to the short film by expanding our parking area, which we really appreciate. Another successful short film we created was the “Fitness Police.” The idea came from a Health and Fitness Specialist, Coach Ahmed Al-Najar. The aim of the film was to spread awareness of a healthy lifestyle amongst university students.

Tell us about your participation in the “Al Mubader” Competition? “Al Mubader” was an opportunity for me and several others to participate in a photography competition. I believe that during my participation, I gained valuable knowledge on the business side of freelance directing and film making. I was able to create a good business plan with effective strategies in order to overcome any and all business risks. I am also thankful for joining such a competition, as I was part of the top 10 competitors and obtained a financial sponsorship from the Industrial Bank of Kuwait.

If you could rewind time, what would you do differently in the competition? I supported other competitors during the competition. If I devoted that time on my own work, I would’ve achieved the scores would take me a position higher than the top 10. However, I do not regret it because the experience of helping others especially in photography is an opportunity in itself.

30

What are your future plans? I have numerous plans and I am working really hard on accomplishing each and every one of them. My short term goals are to graduate and start my visual effects studio with IBK’s support. Whereas my long term goals are to produce short films in order to help improve the Kuwaiti society and participate in the Oscar Academy Award.

Emerging out of these debates, new academic disciplines, government policies and leadership and financial mechanisms were develop and deployed. During this time business schools began to offer degrees in Entrepreneurship, governments created innovation districts, and angel investors and venture capitalists began to look for the next innovative product or service at university labs and coffee shops. The majority of these debates and related practices, however, focused on the entrepreneur with a start-up innovation and idea.

RAMADAN IN MARYLAND MAI YACOOB AL-FARHAN,19 UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER FILM & MEDIA STUDIES

I am writing this article today from the suburbs of Hanover in the state of Maryland. It is almost my third year since I have moved to the United States. I graduated from high school with high distinctions, and later I was granted with a scholarship to study Film & Media Studies in the state of New York. After that, with time I developed a strong interest in Psychology, especially interpersonal relationships. Which made me decide doing a double major instead of sticking to a single major. It is absolutely possible to graduate with more than one Bachelor degree in your undergraduate academia, all that it takes is hard work. Given the fact that I am interested in interpersonal relationships, I started working with one of the most well-know professors in my university and became a Research Assistant at the Relationships Lab. I conducted studies, ran the laboratory and had subjects to observe and interview. Each year I spend my Ramadan in Maryland, away from New York. However, fasting in both states is about 17 hours long and this is not an exaggeration! Spending Ramadan here has a bittersweet flavor. On a spiritual level you just don’t feel anything. When you go out it looks like any other day of the year, people are eating, drinking and doing all sorts of daily activities. You will discover that this is your own battle. The

34

relationship here between you and your surrounding environment is far from reciprocal. You feel disconnected a lot of times to the sacredness of this month. Being half of the world away from home is a bit sour. Noting that I am not the person who misses home often, I rarely do and when this happens it indeed occurs in Ramadan. On the other hand, on a cultural level it is quiet in here. Even with having family members and friends around in the states, it is still considered as a tiny crowd of people. The gatherings are usually small and cozy, just how I like it. Moreover, I was never a fan of any big social gatherings as they were too loud for me on an individual level. When you go to the local mosque in your area, you will notice a beautiful synchrony of colors and a totally pure diverse community. Such diversity is something that you can hardly achieve when going to the mosque near your house in Kuwait. People have taken religion for granted and stopped asking themselves questions about how this religion evolved around a community of people from all sorts of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Lastly, if my description of fasting in the states was not close to your imagination, just think about the struggle of spending a whole Ramadan without a single bite of Lgaimat!

CONNECT²

THE WINNER OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE PRODUCT 2014 IN INJAZ A business that solves problems and improves the society is a one of a kind business. STUDENTALK presents to you Connect², a company that constitutes of High school students who created a device from scratch for the aurally and speech impaired children. As sign language is not widely learned by our community, the device helps anyone to communicate with the aurally and speech impaired children. Also, Connect² won the Most Innovative Product in 2014 in the INJAZ competition. 38

Why did you come up with a deceive for the aurally and speech impaired children? At first we were trying to find a way to give back to the community. We tried to find out what the community was lacking, and we noticed the lack of communication between the aurally and speech impaired and our society. After detailed research, we found out that the aurally and speech impaired are the most people who find it hard to communicate with us and we are neglecting them by not learning sign language. Hence our name Connect². We want to connect the aurally and speech impaired with our society using our product.

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

How can the public benefit from the Connect 2? The public benefits from our product by getting an opportunity to communicate easily with the aurally and speech impaired children. In this essence, children would feel more comfortable to communicate with the public.

How did INJAZ contribute to aiding you with the project? INJAZ helped us start our company financially by providing us stocks that people can buy to contribute to the capital of the company. They gave us the chance to experience the business world, and how a real company works. Also they gave us the biggest opportunity which is to change our society for the better.

How did the President manage the group? As the president I had to be strict even though most of them were my friends. Social media was a big help we’ve created a group to help us communicate, gradually improve our product and manage the group’s attendance. At the end of the day, I did not need to be very strict with my teammates since everyone was already motivated by the idea of our product.

As a Vice President, in what ways did you manage the activities within the group? Managing the activities was not as hard as it sounds. There’s marketing, finance, public relations, human resources, production, the work was divided fairly. Since the product was produced in China, it may seem like the pressure and load was all on the production team. However, with all the other members and departments giving their full energy and motivation, the work was divided evenly.

As a PR coordinator, what were the marketing and PR activities conducted in order to inform the public about Connect 2? As the PR manager, I had to ensure that our company had places to visit, people to talk to, and events to participate in. We started informing the public about our company using the strongest and most efficient marketing strategy used in Kuwait which is word of mouth. We told everyone we know and made sure they spread the word. We set up Social Media accounts on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to interact with the public. Additionally, we have a 24 hour hotline that is available for anyone that has any questions or concerns. We had the privilege of participating in P2BK, and a chance to speak about our company on their stage for more publicity. Also, INJAZ provided us a booth in Marina Mall bridge where more people learned about what Connect² offers. Because our products targeted audience is the aurally and speech impaired kids, we visited their schools to talk to them about our product and get their feedback on it. Not only did we visit the children but we also visited the older generations institutions to get more feedback about our product.

Are you planning on creating a business for Connect 2 after your participation in INJAZ? Starting our business through INJAZ made us think, are we doing this just for the competition or is this a lifelong company? We are planning to go way beyond competitions on making Connect2 a company that all hearing and speech impaired children depend on. Our vision is to spread our creation and make our device the best for that all hearing and speech impaired children need.

ACK STUDENTS

WIN INJAZ COMPETITION WITH

“SKRAAB”

STUDENTALK Magazine extends its warm congratulations to the ACK students for winning the “Best Company in 2014” title in the INJAZ Competition. Transforming car parts to useful and creative home furniture makes “Skraab,” their business project, not only unique and creative but also environmental friendly. We interviewed the President, Ali Al-Saleh, in order to know the success story for “Skraab.”Al-Saleh mentioned how he managed a team of 25 diversified members, the strong elements of “Skraab” and how it will penetrate the Kuwaiti market.

40

‫فخر الكويت مشاريع محلية‬

How did you come up with the idea of transforming car parts into home furniture? Actually our initial idea for the INJAZ project wasn’t “Skraab” nor was it our second or third. It was actually our plan D. After countless debates on what to pick for our business project one of my classmates, Mohammed Al-Kazemi, suggested designing recycled furniture, which was not widely accepted amongst our other classmates. After tweaking the idea, narrowing our target market and showing the rest of the class some actual products, we all agreed to pick the transformation of car parts to furniture as our business idea for INJAZ.

In what ways did you manage the team members? At first it was a bit of a chaotic experience handling a team of 25 members. Moreover, given the diversity amongst the team, I had to figure out ways to encourage communication and build an effective workplace culture amongst us. The best way for this, was to get everyone involved with creating a piece of furniture, especially the girls and team members outside of the production department. This method resulted in a strong team effort and a much needed unity that lead us to our success.

What are the elements that made “Skraab” a successful business? In my opinion, the elements that made “Skraab” a very successful business is that all our products are hand-made and designed by Kuwaiti university students. We tend to not repeat the same designs in order accentuate the uniqueness of the products. Also, we deliver to all locations in Kuwait.

Do you think it will be difficult for “Skraab” to penetrate into the furniture market given a culture that appreciates high-end quality brands? No not at all! As I said one of the key elements of “Skraab” is that it is unique and our pieces are never repeated. We agree that the culture here appreciates high-end quality brands, but they also have an appreciation for “one of a kind” products. That’s exactly what “Skraab” provides to its customers.

In what ways did INJAZ contribute to the success of the project? We are very thankful for INJAZ because they gave us the opportunity to actually start and run a business instead of just thinking about it.

What are your future plans for “Skraab”? After the INJAZ project all companies are required to liquidate their business as we have done. However, Mohammed Al-Kazmi and I have decided to continue further with the business. We recently started up our website, which will be fully functional by August 2014. We have orders coming up from our neighboring G.C.C countries and we look to opening a “Skraab” store before the end of 2014.

What advice would you give to university students who are eager to start their own business? “If you fell down yesterday, stand up today.” - H.G. Wells This quote got me through the difficult times during our project. Therefore, my advice to anyone wanting to start his/her own business, it is not to be afraid of failure and to learn from it with no regrets.

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD

DR. MYTRIS MIXON INSPIRING STORYTELLING IN KUWAIT

After inspiring teenagers to express their stories in several countries around the world, Dr. Mytris Mixon is caring this project to Kuwait. Dr. Mixon does not only encourage students to express their true selves, it a method for students to speak, listen and write which increases their English linguistic abilities through comprehension, role play and discussion. To know Dr. Mixon’s story, here is an interview by Injy Refaie.

Tell me a little about yourself. I’ve lived in San Francisco for the past 20 years and I have also lived in New York City and many other places including countries in Europe, but I’m from Louisiana and it is very different. I am currently teaching in the University of San Francisco and I am lucky that I am able to take a semester off and being able to do something like this program!

You are also a storyteller? The purpose is to get stories from teenagers about experiences in life – stories of something that has happened to them or they know about. It can be very small stories and what is great about this is that we use these stories and we put them all in a book. We’re also asking for folktales as well. They get to speak, listen, and write. This helps in comprehension, role play, and discussion. We could have lectured, but when you begin a sentence with “let me tell you a story”, students are likely to be more responsive.

What inspired this idea? It was actually an inspiration from someone in Russia with the idea, but since then, I’ve done it in Nepal last year where we got the students to write stories about anything that comes to mind – their names, reforestation in a village, a friendship that didn’t last, rekindled friendships, etc. The inspiration comes from finding material that can appeal to teenage readers and getting them to write it down and express their opinions. I always ask the teachers here not to correct them because sometimes teachers can get overzealous and might make it sound like a teacher’s story and this isn’t what we want.

In how many countries have you implemented this project? This is my 78th country to visit! I have lived in 8 countries for over six months. However, I’ve done this project in four countries; Nepal, Russia, El Salvador, and Kazakhstan, But I am hoping to keep going and doing it in as many countries as we can. In Peru, we collected folktales.

How much importance do you place on ESL? I support the English language training in the GCC. I came here to work with both Kuwaiti students and teachers in public schools for this two year program ages 13 to 15 implemented by our partner AmidEast. The students involved in it would go to AmidEast for afternoon English classes. In addition to the classes, the embassy comes up with activities for them to engage with us through the storytelling.

42

What are some of the strategies used for teaching ESL? One of my favorite writing activities is what I call “nonstop” writing, in which students write for 10 minutes every day when they first come in about a subject that they know a lot about so they don’t have to think a lot; they just write.

How is your visit to Kuwait? I came to Kuwait as part of a free country program supported by the U.S Department of State to work on storytelling with the youth audience in the GCC. We want to expand our cooperation with the Public Authority of Applied Education and Training as well as our local partner AmidEast and so, along with storytelling, we offer teacher training and development to teaching English in the public school system. I love Kuwait, its people and the food! I want people to collect the cultural values of the gulf in those stories. Also, I’d like to see what people who aren’t Kuwaiti, but have lived in Kuwait have to say as well. I am eager to deliver and the biggest side effect that we get is that we learn so much from those experiences!

The purpose is to get stories from teenagers about experiences in life

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD

ALI ABDULWAHAB AL-MUTAWA EMPOWERING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR THEIR BUSINESS Passing the knowledge to the next generation is one way to ensure their success. Oday Samad, the Ali Abdulwahab Al Mutawa representative, mentored six high school students to work on their business plan for six months in the Pin2 Challenge annual competition. They did not only work together to construct a successful business plan for Solar Energy Panels, but they also won the competition. To know more about the students’ and mentor’s experiences, keep reading this fruitful interview by STUDENTALK Magazine.

How did you work as a team to develop a business plan in six months? It was all a matter of juggling our time, and we were really excited about the prize! We had to go through four rigorous phases and there were many times we thought we were going to fail miserably. What made matters harder, we were randomly grouped by our school. In the end, we realized that it actually helped – as everybody brought their own strengths and abilities together. We even created Facebook and Whatsapp groups to communicate easily.

Why did you decide to focus on Solar Energy Panels as part of your business? We were keen on solar energy when we started the project because we knew that Kuwait is an ideal place to start a solar energy project since Kuwait has a large average time of daylight. Our project was not only based on solar energy panels, but particularly on batteries as a form of “collecting energy.” If Kuwait adopted this idea, it could potentially be sold to regional and international countries. The project is environmentally-friendly, sustainable, and cost-efficient in the long-term.

Other than the educational side, what other aspects did you learn through the Pin2 Challenge? How to think realistically since school works with theory. We spoke with established solar companies to set actual and reasonable prices. After that we realized, “Woah this is a lot of money… this is no joke!” We learned one cannot be lavish with spending in the business field. Our mentor, Oday, helped us with realistic thinking. He would always look into intricate details that we didn’t realize. He was actually the one that made us call the companies in order to obtain quotations!

44

Do you think you are going to work on this project after your high school graduation? Yes, definitely! We hope we can approach the Kuwaiti government with our idea and get their support to make this project come to life. We are also thinking of approaching solar companies all over the world to gain support in this kind of project. But that’s all after university, of course!

Mentor Questions: What necessary tools did you provide for the students in order to complete their business plan? Before I started with the students, the first question I asked myself is what would I want from my mentor if I were one of them? I had wished that there were these kinds of opportunities when I was in their age, so I tried to focus on both the technical and business experience as well as provide moral support.

In what ways were you involved with the students? “Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation.” – Nelson Mandella. It goes both ways – either the mentors stepping up to help these students reach their goals or the students that were dedicated enough to go through this journey in the last six months. I wanted to be a driving force for the students. I wanted to push them. I am sure they might have hated me at times, especially when I called on lots of meetings. I think now they realized how much they’ve learned and grown through this experience.

After this experience, do you think that the students are prepared for the university business experience? Without a doubt! They started this project with a love for work and learning. I look at them now, and I believe they are way ahead of their peers because they have a real-life project and this experience tucked nicely under their belt.

How were you able to integrate your experience from Ali Abdulwahab Al Mutawa Commercial Co. (AAW) within the students’ experience? AAW has eight diverse business lines that operate in different ways I tried to integrate examples from AAW’s own operations. My personal experience is in Economics and Auditing, and so I would pinpoint areas I knew they needed to think about or work on. For example, I asked them: “What happens when it gets dusty?” They needed to figure out a way to maintain a clean solar energy plant because the accumulation of dust would have affected the results. This is when they included a robotic brush to clean their plant on a regular basis.

MAKING KUWAIT PROUD VOLUNTEER WORK

VOLUNTEER WORK

REEM AL-NASSRALLAH TOO MUCH VOLUNTEER WORK IS NEVER TOO MUCH!

Volunteer work is a way for people to give back to their community. While doing so, you build your character, create connections and unify your volunteering team with the community. Thus, too much volunteer work is never too much. A person who exemplifies such statement is Reem Al-Nassarallah, an English Literature student at GUST. After working with LoYAC, KACCH and Al-Kout Group, Nassarallah formed the Volunteer Club at GUST under the supervision of Professor Janet Testerman. The club not only created activities on campus, they also collaborated with other organizations such as Al Nowair and Operation Hope. For a detailed insight into their outstanding work, here is an interview with the Founder and President of the Volunteer Club.

What was your underlying motivation to start the Volunteer Club at GUST? It started when I took Business Writing Classes with Professor Janet Testerman. She asked all students to write their resumes and include at least one volunteering activity. Upon studying my resume which included several volunteering activities, she encouraged me to start the Volunteering Club.

46

‫الكويت العمل التطويعي‬ ‫فخر‬

What are your previous establishments on campus and off campus?

As the president, how do you manage the other students who are working at the Volunteer Club?

I have participated in several organizations within different fields of volunteering. With LoYAC, I participated in the “Service is My Joy” Program, which included organizing events that provide entertainment for children with special needs. I also enjoyed helping children with special needs by participating at the Al-Kharafi Activity Kids Center. In addition, I volunteered with Spread the Passion by organizing the opening ceremony for KACCH Hospital which included managing kids from different schools. Moreover, in Al- Kout Group, I volunteered by organizing their annual

To manage a group of people, you must form a strong team. A strong team will never be formed unless they have one goal. Our goal is provide the best volunteering services. Each person has skills and they should use it towards that one goal. My job was to lead, manage and guide the group to achieve that aim.

February National Day Campaign “‫”احتفل و خلها نظيفة‬.

Did you ever think of collaborating with charitable or international organizations? Which ones do you prefer? It is important to collaborate with other charitable organizations as they are the leaders in enriching the passion for volunteer work within individuals. The Volunteer Club worked with AlNuwair by helping to organize the first conference about positivity in the Gulf Region, “Think, Work, Live Positive. In addition, we worked with Operation Hope “Winter Warmth Campaign.” We volunteered by packing over 2,261 bags that included gloves, socks, hat and a scarf to street cleaners across Kuwait.

How much has the Volunteer Club accomplished since its beginning of the year plan? We have accomplished almost all of your planned events. We tried to diversify our volunteering experiences. We have achieved several trips to places such as the elderly home along with beach cleaning. The cherry on top of the Volunteering Club was organizing the opening ceremony for the project “Kuwaitis and We’ll be Remembered” which is an educational initiative for Kuwaiti citizens to showcase remarkable people and their achievements within our community.

What are your future events for GUST’s upcoming school year? Inshallah, I will be graduating this semester from GUST. I do not think my love for volunteering or the Volunteer Club will end there. I’ll be an honorary member for the club next year.

SOCIAL DIWANEYA TIPS FOR BETTER YOU

Tips for Dieting During Ramadan Ramadan Kareem to all our beloved STUDENTALK Readers. It is the Holly Month were we reconnect to our spirituality, our families and our community. However, some people look forward to Ramadan to lose weight. You would be surprised that people tend to gain weight during Ramadan though the fasting hours are longer in the summer. To prevent this dilemma over the course of 30-days fasting, here are STUDENTALK’s Tips for Ramadan

1 Don’t Eat Feasts. After long hours of being hungry, everyone tends to break their fast with a meal filled with deeply fried and fatty foods. However, this is very unhealthy. As your food intake lessens during the day, your body stores more food due to its food deprivation. Therefore, it is better to break your fast with liquids, resort to water and fresh juices. Also, breaking your fast with dates would be a healthy way to gain more energy. Increase your dosage of vegetables and proteins to avoid indigestion after eating and it will help in keeping you hydrated during the day 2

A Light Meal at Dawn. Just because this is the last meal of the day for you, eating a heavy meal is not going to aid in keeping you full during fasting hours. Instead your body will be expecting heavy meal in no time. Eating food that is rich in fiber with carbohydrates at night is actually more muscle-sparing and fat burning than having a larger breakfast.

3

Training While Fasting = Myth. Many of you have heard that the best time to go to the gym is an hour or two before breaking your fast, don’t do it! The dehydration increases risk of injury and will inhibit performance and recovery. It is much better to train at night, 3 times a week with low-moderate intensity workout.

4

Stay Hydrated. Your goal between breaking your fasting to fasting is to 2.5 liters of water. Staying hydrated is imperative as this month fasting hours will be longer than usual.

5

Don’t Do Cardio. The importance of cardio lies in losing more calories. As your calorie intake is decreased during the Holy month of Ramadan, it is better to stick with muscle building. Do not run yourself to the ground and sweat a lot. Keep in mind that the point of training is to keep you stronger during Ramadan.

6

Feed Your Soul. It’s time to stay connected to your spirituality. This does not only involve praying for spirituality can be regained through doing good deeds for others. Start with your family and friends, help those who are need, whether physically, financially or emotionally. There are several nonprofit organizations that need volunteers. Sleeping for long hours is not healthy mentally or physically, try to engage is other activities at least to keep you distracting from being hungry or thirsty. Ramadan is a month with magical spirit. Many will be worried about the long hour summer days, however, there are several beautiful aspects that make up for them. Family gathering together to break their fasts, friends eating desserts together at the Diwaniya, and giving back to society. One month, once a year, cherish every moment of it. Ramadan Kareem STUDENTALK Readers!

FEATURE THE UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

ON WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2014, OVER 50 MILLION PEOPLE FORCIBLY DISPLACED GLOBALLY

UNHCR Kuwait teams up with McDonald’s Kuwait and 360 MALL to mark World Refugee Day 2014 It has been a widespread tradition that many countries host and celebrate “World Refugee Day” however the most common Refugee Day celebration is the African Refugee Day on the 20th of June of each year. The UN General Assembly in 2000 drafted a resolution that joined the International Refugee Day with the African Refugee Day celebrations. The General Assembly therefore decided that 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day. This year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) released a report showing that 51.2 million people around the world have been forcibly displaced by the end of 2013. UNHCR’s annual Global Trends report, which is based on data compiled by governments, partner NGOs and the organization’s own records, shows that the number of refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced people worldwide has, for the first time in post-World War II era, exceeded 50 million people. UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres, who marked World Refugee Day with UNHCR staff and Syrian refugees in Lebanon, said the new record high reflected “the immense costs of not ending wars, of failing to resolve or prevent conflict. Peace is today dangerously in deficit. Humanitarians can help as a palliative, but political solutions are vitally needed.”

In Thailand’s Ban4Mai Nai Soi refugee camp, UNHCR Special Envoy Every seconds someone is forced to flee. Angelina Jolie also called for an end to the vicious cycle of violence and displacement. “Preventing armed conflict should be a collective responsibility of the international community,” she said, adding: “This staggering surge in refugee numbers shows that the world is failing to meet that responsibility.” In his statement, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “On World Refugee Day, 20 June, we honor the strength and resilience of the more than 50 million people around the world who have fled war, persecution and human rights abuses. Let us renew our commitment to end armed conflict, and to help the people who have been forced to flee their homes. Even one family torn apart by war is too many.” UNHCR staff around the world have been planning for months for World Refugee Day and prepared a wide range of activities, including light shows, film screenings, lectures, panel discussions, food bazaars, fashion shows, cultural performances, concerts and sports contests, including football tournaments in refugee camps like Jordan’s Za’atari, to coincide with the soccer World Cup in Brazil. UNHCR Kuwait celebrated World Refugee Day 2014, as it has done in the past years, with asylum seekers and refugee families by hosting a children and family event aimed at giving back, bringing joy and showing solidarity with the local refugee community. UNHCR Kuwait distributed fullyequipped school bags with stationary to all the refugee children to highlight the importance of education and to prepare them for the upcoming academic year. For the fourth year in a row, the event was sponsored by McDonald’s Kuwait, which provided complimentary meals and organized games and entertainment to all the children and families with special appearances from the famous McDonald’s characters. Additionally this year UNHCR Kuwait focused on strengthening efforts to engage the Kuwaiti public by teaming up with 360 MALL to set up a booth on the 19-20 June 2014 to raise awareness on World Refugee Day and shed light on refugee issues worldwide. 360 MALL supported UNHCR by hosting the installation and generously providing the space free of cost in order to support the humanitarian efforts in spreading the message of refugee issues globally.

Tell us about yourself I’m 22 years old, but would be 23 when this comes out, I love art, photography, and fashion. Anything that involves creativity is my passion. Soon I will have my Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design from the American University of Kuwait.

What is your talent? Art is my passion. I love creating new things, especially something that has no existence, I love adding some life into it.

How did you develop your talent? I have been painting and drawing for a long time. After that I started developing my artistic abilities digitally by learning Photoshop in High School. Thanks to my parents, I also took several summer classes for further development. After that, I decided to pursue a major in Graphic Design. Believe it or not, having an art major can build and ruin you simultaneously, however that outcomes were great!

What are your future plans? In the future, I am planning on hosting my exhibition to showcase all my art work. My long term goal is to have my own store and sell all my paintings for those who appreciate and love art.

Did you encounter any obstacles? Yes, always! Most of the obstacles I encountered evolve around my confidence, or the confusion that I might have lost my talent or touch. Sometimes I would be scared to take risks or I would be afraid that I might not be good at something, which I think is natural. However, my parents have taught me to not let outer obstacles control me or get in my way.

Who supported your talent? My parents all the way, all the time, they help me develop my talent, pursue it, keep painting and push me to sell. They are 1000% supportive. I also have a few friends and family members or acquaintances who keep supporting me over and over again which is the greatest feeling and support ever. All who supported me, I feel grateful for them.

Any last words for the readers? Always be nice. Try to understand other people. It is not healthy steal other people’s work without giving them credit. Be your own person. Let other people be.

R E N WIN

Mohammad Waleed The Most Talented Competition for June 2014 STUDENTALK Magazine proudly represents the winner for Most Talented Competition, Mohammad Waleed. Rapping has evolved amongst the youth in the Kuwaiti community. It is a talent that aids in sending a message to the community for people to be made aware on several aspects in the society. To know more about Waleed’s talent and how he was able to develop it, here is our interview with him.

Why is rapping important to you? My talent is basically using great words to make people aware of a phenomenon that we usually see or experience in our society or culture.“To achieve greatness you have to have greatness within” and to be a rapper I need to have another way of thinking to express my message using meaningful words.

How were you able to develop your talent? The ability to come up with meaningful and touching sentences is not something to be developed. It is an innate talent. I could be sitting right in front of you and by looking in your eyes, I can exactly know what you are thinking or feeling. Also, I can write a paragraph that matches or expresses these feeling. Therefore, It is something within the personality not something that can be developed.

What are the obstacles that any rapper would encounter? Look around you, tell me one English singer, writer, rapper, musician that easily succeeds in Kuwait? Not one! English is considered as a second language and it is hardly understood. Which made me think whether the messages I send through my talent will be sent across to the Kuwaiti society.

Who supported your talent? My mother nurtured and pushed me to write and rap. She strongly supported what I do. I would like to express my gratitude to Hussain AlNaddaf because he made me realize that I have a great talent, when I didn’t notice and he made me his crew partner.

What advice would you give the potential rappers? I strongly want people in Kuwait and the Middle East to open up to new experiences and try to adapt and understand the world with every language out there. Rapping is the power of using words to communicate with others and make them feel what you feel. Moreover, it can help you achieve delivering a powerful message.

Synergy Distribution looks for not only the most effective creams, serums to protect your skin, keep you look younger longer but also products that protect the environment. Our main customers are Hospitals, Pharmacies, Private Clinics and Dermatologist eager to prescribe the most natural, effective products possible to their patient. You can’t solve a skin problem with a full chemical cream. You’ll only generate a new problem. With natural, and free chemicals products, you solve the issue effectively and for life. Know what you put on your skin on daily basis ! SkinClinic is Number 1 in Spain and has positioned itself as a brand identified as ‘Cosmetics with Results’ in Europe. Mr. Cayetano Gutiérrez, chemist and director of SkinClinic, has formulated a pioneering specific treatment to eliminate, reduce and prevent facial age spots in the short term, with a high concentration of active ingredients. This treatment called MELANYC, among others, has been recently tested by the director of the Chair of Dermo-cosmetics at the Miguel Hernández University in Elche (Alicante, Spain), in a case study carried out with women who suffered from facial hyper pigmentation. The effectiveness of the results can be highlighted with three key aspects: in all cases there was an improvement and even the elimination of melasma; in many cases these improvements were visible in the short term (within 7 days); there were no cases of intolerance to the treatment. MELANYC is a combination of eight active ingredients which contain depigmenting properties and enhance cell regeneration. The difference with other treatments comes from the level of concentration of active ingredients, whose combination in itself raises some technical difficulties, and from the exclusive ingredients that give the formula stability. In addition to that, it is a depigmenting product that can be used all year round, even in summer.

First Daughter Malia Obama Goes Hollywood

Ben Affleck Steps Out Looking Buff With New Batman Body

Rumors have been circulating that the 15-year-old spent a day working on Halle Berry’s new CBS sci-fi thriller, Extant, as a production assistant. Berry’s on-screen best friend Camryn Manheim confirmed the news. “Yeah, I wasn’t there when she was there,” noted Manheim. “[Malia] was there and I understood it was very exciting, she was incredibly lovely and beautiful and she’s coming back, so I can’t wait to meet her.”So how did the teen land such a cool gig? We’re guessing her connection to the president probably helped. Berry and Steven Spielberg both serve as executive producers on the series and have been long time supporters of Obama. The first family was in Southern California because of President Obama’s commencement address, which he gave to UC Irvine grads on Saturday.

It looks like Batman is doing for Ben Affleck what Bourne did for his BFF Matt Damon. The next man to play Bruce Wayne, Ben, 41, was seen outside of Barney’s New York in Beverly Hills on Saturday looking particularly ripped in a tight gray shirt that showed off his new well-toned physique. Ben’s t-shirt sported the logo for IPF — for the Institute of Performance & Fitness — a personal and group training center in North Reading, Mass. Ben and Matt are both from Boston and notoriously proud of their home town. Ben has tasked a team of trainers from IPF that includes Jamie and IPF head Walter Norton Jr. to get him in shape for his role in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Sporting a baseball-inspired T-shirt, ankle-grazing black pants, and an edgy white arm band, Rafferty looked like a total pro, despite the fact that it was his first time on the runway. However, while he had never modeled in such a highprofile arena, this was hardly his first gig. Last fall, he signed to star in the ad campaign for Tiger of Sweden, which involved shooting a short film entitled A Different Cut.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend… even at one years old. North West, who celebrated her first birthday, sported some new bling during an outing with her parents over the weekend. The beautiful stud earrings were on display as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West took North to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan in New York City. The sparkly additions are new, as North didn’t have her ears pierced during Kim and Kanye’s lavish wedding last month.

Think twice before asking a Capricorn for charitable funding or support as they are known to be reserved and insensitive. As they are bold and impulsive you can expect differing reactions from them. However, do still try your luck. You never know, you may get a positive reaction.

Keep your eyes and ears open when it comes to the Aquarius as they are known for being rather selfish. Because they are spontaneous you cannot predict or expect anything. It all depends on their moods, so if you are looking for financial funding, target them when they’re feeling optimistic. Their impulsive actions would surprise you.

Feb 20 - Mar 20 VIRGO

Virgos are very shy so they might not voice the needs of others but they will get any and all work done as they love perfection. They are very empathic and they feel the suffering of others.

Despite all the pessimistic comments floating around for centuries about Scorpions, we know from deep down that Scorpions are one of the most generous, kind, caring and trustworthy individuals. Do not be intimated by the stereotype!

May 22 - June 21

You are considered lucky if you’re friends with a Gemini due to their friendly and supportive nature. They would be willing to share all that they have, especially if they feel for others. They may not write a check for a charitable organization but are willing to help you out if you are in need of funds.

SCORPIO

TAURUS

Taureans are the ones you can call to carry the dead body with you. Individuals of this star sign are known for their very generous, empathic, and dependable nature. Though Taureans love materialistic items, they would be willing to give this up for charity.

If you are looking for someone to charm people in order to fund for a charitable event, you got to the Libran. They are open-minded, friendly, creative and easy to talk to you. They will allure the public to joining your charity.

Pisces are compassionate, charitable and will quickly put the needs of others ahead of their own. It’s this kind of self-sacrifice that keeps these folks going. The unfortunate part is that they are likely to be taken advantage of by less well-meaningful souls.
