OxAdventure

Binding International Affairs with Kuwait through Charity For the past years, the Kuwaiti youth embarked on the journey of conducting charitable work independently. Nora Al-Ruwaished, Saud Al-Juwaiyan and Ibrahim Al-Fraih’s, founders of OxAdventure, aim to conduct charity work outside Kuwait to broaden the students’ perspectives and influence them to conduct activities in Kuwait. They have done several charitable work in India, Nepal and recently in Rwanda. STUDENTALK was proud to conduct an interview with Ms. Al-Ruwaished, Mr. Al-Juwaiyan and Mr. Al-Fraih as we encourage our students to take part with OxAdventure to enjoy such exceptional and rewarding experience. Are you considering it? To learn more, read the interview with the founders. What inspired you to create an organization for charitable work outside of Kuwait? The idea started when we met in Kenya during a volunteering trip. We wanted to create something extraordinary in order to leave a print on the youths’ lives. We wanted to combine our passion for travelling and adventure with charity. Integrating these two elements is beneficial for university students, especially if they gain experience from Internships abroad. In Kuwait students usually visit the same places over and over, such as the US, UK or a small number of other countries in Europe. The youth is submerged in their comfort zone. This does not broaden their perspective nor open their minds to new possibilities in life. We wanted to design a program that would not only allow them to discover new destinations; instead we wanted to also expose them to the struggles of others and to be thankful for what they have. Fortunately, Kuwait is an affluent country and living in such luxury will never open our mind to the struggles of the maids and labor workers. Through OxAdventure, we wanted to educate Kuwait’s youth about new cultures by living and eating with the locals and to show the struggles of others while discovering new places. It is like hitting two birds with one stone!

18

After your first experience in Kenya, how did you embark on the journey of building OxAdventure? We did not have any background in business as our majors are in Mass Communications and Media and in Engineering. So, the first step was to set up meetings with almost everyone we knew to get the advice we need. First, we approached the universities, and the professors were very helpful in guiding us to other places that would support OxAdventure. An AUK Professor was so proud of our work that he came with us to one of our trips. After that, we met with the Ministry of Youth and we also had a booth at P2BK. People from different fields were very welcoming, those who could not provide a lot gave us the advice we needed, or directed us to others who can help. They enlightened us with information about the safety of OxAdventure students. They educated us about planning and preparations, including financing and safety waivers. As disease is rife in Africa, how did you ensure the safety of the students participating in the Rwanda trip? Prior to the journey we made sure that we are going to a war-zone free country. We conducted thorough research and contacted

NGO’s, hospitals and restaurants in order to create international connections and to maximize security. We designed a brochure for the students to know more about the country’s history, culture and traditions as well as their itinerary for charity work and visits. We guided the students to take vaccination shots and provided them with malaria pills. Before the OxAdventure students step into a country, our team would go there for reconnaissance and to be there to welcome the students at the airport. What are the obstacles you would encounter when visiting a country? Fortunately, we did not encounter any safety issues as we do extensive research during the planning process. However, obstacles may arise due to student’s reactions whilst adapting to a new culture. This goes under OxAdventure’s main mission, which is to “inspire the youth through travel, charity and adventure.” At OxAdventure, one of our trips is designed to be extremely out of the comfort zone. For instance, OxIndia in Bangalore was extremely out of the comfort zone for the students as they stayed in the rural area for 10 days. Cold water and AC were not accessible in such hot weather,

‫قصة الغالف‬

and the only food they ate was Indian food, which was mainly spicy. During the early stages, students were excited about the new challenge. The first day is all about a tour around a city and visiting museums. However, around halfway through the trip the students were exhausted; missing the affluent life they are used to living back in Kuwait. At this point, most of the students tend to get fussy. We provide them with motivational speeches to remind them of their challenging nature and the purpose of OxIndia. We told them if the people in India can do it, then so can they. Also, when the students experience extreme physical and emotional exhaustion, we offer an eventful day by visiting entertainment places. This provides them with a mind-shock that there are many unprivileged people that cannot afford such an opulence life. Having the taste of both worlds, the students will be

our presentations, we memorized it in order to show the sponsor how committed we are to our organization. Our Rwanda project was sponsored by United Real Estate Company. As for OxIndia, it was sponsored by Gulf University for Science and Technology. After that, we got our annual partner which is Ooredoo. OxAdventure conducted outstanding philanthropic activities outside of Kuwait , Do you believe that conducting charitable activities in Kuwait would further influence OxAdventure students? We conducted one charitable activity in Kuwait with the cooperation of Q8Books. We gathered several books for students in Syria. As our main aim is to induce change for the betterment of the Kuwaiti youth. We believe that if the students are up to the challenge of

Our gratitude to TikTok for providing us with watches as presents for teachers in our next trip, Nepal. encouraged to do more volunteer work in order to raise underprivileged people’s living standards. Moreover, they feel like they have earned the fun after all that struggle and they leave the trip on a positive note. As every company must practice CSR to maintain its image, how did you find the right sponsors? Actually the sponsors came to us because they wanted to take part in the students’ experience through OxAdventure. They loved our ideas as it is a way for companies to integrate their CSR by empowering the youth. It was a hectic process but we succeeded in getting their attention. We worked hard on

conducting charitable work outside of Kuwait, then our influence will allow them to be more charitable independently. For example, when the OxIndia students came back to Kuwait, during the beginning of Ramadan, the students organized an “Iftar” event for labor workers. It was a rewarding feeling to know that the trip influenced them to organize the charitable work in Kuwait. We decided to coordinate charitable events abroad in order to bind international relations with Kuwait. As we integrate change within Kuwait’s youth, we also want to enforce a new perspective about Kuwait on the international level. Through our previous trips, we contacted local media in other countries

to provide us with coverage of our work. We wanted to eradicate the idea that Kuwaitis treat labor workers poorly. The Nepalese government banned their female workers to have visas to work in Kuwait. During our next trip in Ox Adventure in Nepal, our aim is to change the Nepalese government’s mindset about Kuwait through our charitable work there. As your next trip in Nepal is coming up, what is the application process to join OxAdventure? Our entire application is available at our website at www.oxadenture.com. The students may fill the application and send it to us. After we receive the application, we conduct an interview with the applicants to discuss if they are really interested in such challenge and if their physical conditions allow them to participate. Once we select our volunteers, we take them through our research, the expectations, their itinerary and the traveling process. What were your favorite watches that you wore from TikTok? “The new collection from Tik Tok is great, my favorite watch would definitely be the Tissot T-Race. It completely fits my personality” - Nora Al-Ruwaished “From all the watches I have enjoyed wearing for the photoshoot, my favorite would be Mido Multifort Automatic” - Saud Al-Juwaiyan “Time is money and I would spend all my money for my favorite Hamilton Flight Timer” - Ibrahim Al-Fraih

In order for the small businesses to succeed they need intensive support from the government. Support does not only include financing, but guidance as well.

I believe that the problem facing small Kuwaiti businesses is that there is far too much competition between them. Working on different marketing strategies will help them sell.

The demand of the government is over rated and it’s a huge maze; it’s a struggle for those who are new in the business. They should make the procedures easier.

The main problem facing small Kuwaiti businesses is that there too much competition amongst themselves. Producing versatile products can help in decreasing the competition.

Too many businesses with similar ideas, which makes it harder to think of an original idea for a new target market. Diversifying is really important!

The most significant problem facing small/local businesses is the lack of effective marketing strategy which is not convincing people to buy their products.

The small businesses need more support from the government. They should educate them about the market and way to create new products for new target markets.

I think there should be more original ideas, it seems like all the small business are all the same. There is lack of guidance about the market.

They contrive creative ideas for their businesses in terms of products and marketing. They should develop products that are innovative so that they can fulfill the market’s needs.

The main problem is that they do not have the appropriate guidance to start their own business. They need support from the government in order to start a solid business.

The government is not helping the small businesses by financing their companies. The government should provide them with the support they require to have a solid business.

IN THIS SECTION We give the students of Kuwait a platform from which to express their beliefs on the matters that affect them. Here, students get the opportunity to voice their opinions, whilst allowing others to hear them out.

Students Said Investigation

Investigation

Establishing a solid business in the long run In the past five years, Kuwait has witnessed a significant change in its economy due to local businesses emerging in the market. At the beginning stages, most of the ideas were unique and they created a need amongst several target markets. Several low cost marketing strategies such as word-of-mouth and Social Media aided in establishing awareness to local businesses. Later, the idea appealed to several people, thinking it is an easy way to make money. Thus, many of the unique ideas became very original as they have been duplicated. In an open market, it is difficult for many of the local businesses to compete, especially amongst big corporations and SMEs, which led to many of them closing down. STUDENTALK investigated this topic with four different local businesses: Art Space, AbiDoc, Sugarcoated and Diamo World. We asked the local business owners: “What are the essential elements that establish a consistent local business? How can the business prevent itself from being just a trend?” Dia Mohammad, the founder of Diamo World and is specialized in designing Hijabs for women targeting all age groups mentioned that, “to establish a consistent business you need first to know the government regulations. You need to think about the product/service you would like to produce and know your target customer and segments. You should have sufficient demand based on actual research.” Ms. Mohammad mentioned the importance of formulating a solid marketing plan. She emphasized that a strong marketing plan should include “the marketing mix - the 7Ps: product, price, promotion, place, physical evidence, people and process. “ To prevent a local business from being just a trend, Ms Mohammad highlights that “you need to have a competitive edge, position and be the first in the market via unique product/service and add value like after sale service. Keep introducing new things and follow what your customer needs and wants.”

The owner of Sugar Coated, Hashim Dashti, highlighted that the most important aspect to have a well established business is to be “passionate in what you do.” Passion is the main force that drives the owner and/or his workers to do get the job done well! Also, it is imperative to “create a demand.” Applying the push strategy will definitely make the customers come to you regardless of your location. Mr. Dashti emphasized on “being consistent with the high quality you provide to your customers” as it is one of the ways that will prevent a business from being just a trend.

Setting the light on having a patient attitude and a strong vision, Sara Chourai, Founder of Artspace, talked about her personal experience saying “we faced a lot of unexpected difficulties and surprises at the beginning, but we always had patience to reach the vision that we planned for. Things don’t always go as planned, and in our case, major things we planned for didn’t go as we expected them to. Here is when patience was playing a big role.” Underlining the importance of creating a strong bond with clients Ms. Chourai stated that she “built enough clientele that are now part of our family. We also offer new things constantly and that’s a major element of keeping the business alive.”

Trends change, especially at a rapid speed for technological businesses, and it is imperative to coop with them. A competitor can easily introduce the same products you are offering, however with new elements. That’s why it is imperative adapt to changes. Emphasizing on this concept, One of the founders of AbiDoc, Dr. Mussad Al-Razouki, mentioned that “a business must evolve and become strong enough to meet the latest trends in the industry.” Dr. Al-Razouki stated that in order for a business not become a trend, it “must develop a solid business model” in the beginning stage.

Mahdi Dashti

Providing theatrical entertainment at ACK through the Drama Club Your major should not determine your hobbies and/or your extracurricular activities. Mahdi Dashti exemplifies this statement, as he is majoring in Mechanical Engineering at ACK and known for showering his creativity through theatrical shows as the President of the Drama Club. His passion for acting allowed him to play the role of the president for 3 consecutive years. To know more about their theatrical activities on campus, read this interesting interview by STUDENTALK Magazine. How does the Drama club contribute to ACK's community? We contribute to the ACK community by providing entertaining shows for those who enjoy theatrical performances. Â Our shows are not only entertaining, but are known for providing a valuable life lesson at the end. That's why our aim is to provide fruitful messages, expose problems and provide solutions related to the students and the university, via our entertaining shows. What on and off campus activities have you taken part in? I participated in 4 different plays on campus. The first show was an interesting challenge, whereby the students would write one word on a piece of paper and we would have to do an impromptu performance depending on that particular word. In 2012, the drama club members wrote, directed and performed in two plays. As for the last play, it was from the Russian writer Anton Chekhov, directed by the American University of Dubai's Drama Club, where we visited their campus and learnt a lot from their experience. How do you train or rehearse your members for a performance? We conduct practices and exercises on an international level derived from professional acting books. They educate students on development on stage shows, impromptu performances, and communication with other actors on stage as well as keeping up with the acting rhythm.

‫حياة الطلبة أندية جامعية‬

As the president, how do you manage the Drama club? Usually, I try as much as possible to be their friend, brother and a mentor because "the show must go on." However, during serious situations, when action needs to be taken, I put on the president hat to make sure everything is in order. Do you believe the performing arts are not cherished in the Kuwaiti community? I do not believe so. I think acting is cherished by the Kuwaiti community. If that was the case, we wouldn't grow up watching famous Kuwaiti plays from the 60's such a ‫ محكمة الفريج‬. What are the main obstacles you have faced while being the President? Fortunately, we have not faced any severe obstacles while hosting our plays. Yes, we might encounter disagreements between the members, but they aren’t considered called obstacles per se. Instead, they open our minds to certain problems and broaden our perspective. Any last words? I would like to thank the STUDENTALK team for this interesting interview, and for maintaining a strong connection with the students, allowing them to expose their talents.

Student Diwaniya Topic of the Month

Entrepreneurs Everywhere! By: Alia Majid Al-Tourky, 20, GUST, Public Relations & Advertisement

Entrepreneurs and small businesses are gradually increasing in the Kuwaiti market. Children act as teenagers and teenagers are acting like adults. As a result, they try to think in mature way about the future. The concept of financial independency is taking a great shape within the minds of nowadays’ teenagers and the young adults. Everyone tries to have his/her own business to build themselves. Furthermore, the openness of social media to every aspect of life, positive and negative, reality and dreams; luxury and poverty got the people motivated into more creativity and willingness to do effort. On the other hand, we see those of who have ideas, but lack the confidence of moving forward with those ideas because of the sense of fear of people's reaction towards their ideas. At present, the connotation of the traditional family which was about the father taking the role of the pocket money, the mother taking the role of the school of life and the children taking the role of the depending people who wait for the father to deposit their salaries and the mother to lecture them about the essence of life has now become slightly outdated. Here especially in Kuwait, where the government teaches the citizens indirectly to be responsible and never depend on someone else financially, they award the university students a monthly salary to facilitate life and help fulfill needs. After getting used to the system of taking some responsibility, the young people start to think widely. They start to demand independency. Social Media impacts our minds and behaviors in different ways, either through words or images. People, by that, are getting affected by the advantages and the disadvantages by the different kinds of scenes. Especially the positive scenes that stimulate the one to aspire, work and innovate. Therefore, a revolution of small businesses began in Kuwait years ago. Perhaps, the most known small business was the cupcake industry that nearly became to be the key to initiate a business. However, the revolution did not stop; it is even growing day by day. Ambitions are going up, and creativity is getting wider. Nevertheless, it is much noticed how some hesitate to do anything, just because of people and what they think. In addition to the people who enjoy discouraging others they keep on reminding them how much the society is judgmental and how it could be harsh sometimes and non-understanding.

38

Also, there is the weak zone as one is placed in a zone that lacks the strength to state opinions and becomes very easy to be manipulated with towards the benefit of the other. Eventually, an individual loses the self-confidence and retreats on starting anything for the sake of people not to talk! Ultimately, we should stand up for our ambitions and reject those who try to interfere with what is none of their business, unless we are not crossing our religious beliefs nor violating the local regulations. BE STRONG, BE SMART AND GO AHEAD!

Making Kuwait Proud Local Businesses

Sugar Coated Strawberries dipped in a variety of flavours Hesham Dashti earned a Bachelor Degree in International Business at GUST. Along with his studies, he successfully established his business specialized in dipped and coated strawberry, Sugercoated. Dashti expanded his products to include strawberries dipped in different chocolate bar flavors. Mouthwatering much? Keep reading the interview to know more about Sugarcoated. How did you come up with the idea of coated and dipped strawberries? The idea was established back in 2012. I worked closely with my sister in order to develop a unique business, Sugercoated, in order to provide various products of dipped and coated strawberries. Our aim is to make chocolate dipped strawberries a must-have platter for family gatherings, baby showers and/or weddings. While Chocolate dipped strawberries are the standard product being provided by franchised companies. However, I wanted to create a special twist to it. We offer different flavors of dipped strawberries that from different chocolate bars. This way, the customers can enjoy dipped strawberries while reminiscing eating the candy bars during their childhood. What types of coated and dipped strawberries do you offer and what is your best seller? It began with four over-the-counter basic flavors that evoked feelings of nostalgia: Dark Chocolate, Kinder Chocolate, Galaxy Chocolate and Hershey’s. As the business grew, we expanded on the number of flavors. After the basic flavors, Praline, Caramel, Pistachio and Peanut Butter were later introduced. The bestseller, which was an idea we created, was the Cookie Bite. It is simple yet very scrumptious!

Do you find it difficult to innovate new ideas in such limited field? While others might see that strawberries dipped in chocolate as a business, I see it as an opportunity to broaden the business even more and provide the customers with unique products. Yes, the regular chocolate dipped strawberries are loved; however, introducing new products/flavors is imperative to maintain customer loyalty. It is a fun challenge to integrate popular chocolate bars or sweet treats with strawberries. And the best is yet to come! Baking is categorized a business for women, how did your customers react knowing that a Kuwaiti male is making the strawberries? Surprisingly, they handled it well! We must expose to society gender does not define one's hobby or job. Gender quality is not only demanded by women. At the end of the day, if you are good at what you just have to do it! What would you like to say to your supporters, customers and STUDENTALK readers? My esteemed gratitude goes to those who supported my sister and I throughout those two successful years. I would like to encourage the STUDENTALK readers to dream big and work hard!

ARTSPACE Café An artistic utopia at Galleria 2000 At STUDENTALK Magazine, we search for the utmost unique businesses in order to expose their accomplishments as well as to inspire students to become innovative. That’s why we interviewed Sara Chouari, one of the founders of Artspace. Artspace is an open and social environment targeting art and design enthusiasts. While operating as a cafe/creative studio, the venue boasts a well lit, interactive art studio space catered to craft and art in its most organic forms. Beginners and experts alike may use Artspace’s studio facility to paint, lecture, attend or host an art workshop or even work on their ongoing creative projects. Those with artistic minds, this interview will be very fruitful for you! How did you incorporate different elements (coffee shop, gallery and an art workshop) in one idea? Artspace has 3 concepts under one roof. My partners Raghda Yousseh, Sara Farasheh and I wanted to create a place in Kuwait where all artists can feel at home - at our cafe. We wanted to encourage them as well, by putting up their artwork for sale - at our gallery. What types of workshops do you provide? How can students sign up for them? We have a few planned workshops a week that range in art with the use of pencil, ink, paper, canvas, paint and most feasible mediums. Special topics are introduced weekly and levels may range from beginners to intermediate, depending on the topic and guest speaker. Soon, we will be offering cake/ cupcake decorating classes! It is very easy to sign up: people would pick timing and a workshop they like, and all they need to do is message or call to book their seat. We offer 4 different timings/workshops every day, and kids’ workshops are offered during the weekends.

What is the selection process for students to display their art pieces for sale at Art Space? I usually meet with the artists who want to display their artwork for sale and I pick the paintings that go along with the gallery and fits within the atmosphere. Diamo World A wonderful world of exquisite Hijabs! The misconception of women wearing Hijab not being trendy, is elimiated! A diverse collection of Hijabs made from high quality fabrics and designed with Swarovski elements are available for you to look great during all occasions. To cater to all veiled women’s needs, Diamo World offer several products that are different from the various conventional shops that you usually buy from. To know more about these services, you must read about Ms. Dia Mohammad’s experience with Diamo World. Why did you decide to start Diamo World? I wore Hijab in 2006 and, since then, I kept looking for unique designs that are not worn by mass people so sometimes I used to design and fix my own hijab using Swarovski Elements. When I decided to start a business, I decided to sell something that I make by my hand and since I have experience on fixing crystal and since the existing hijabs are same in all shops, so I decided to produce hijab. With several small Hijab stores, how does Diamo World find itself competing with local stores? Although there are a huge number of hijab stores, Diamo is one of the top when we consider the quality and the luxury. Unfortunately, lots of ladies pay a lot for their outfit, but when it comes to their hijab they seek a cheap one and this reduces their luxury style. Diamo always seeks to differentiate itself via the continuous introduction of new designs such as using customer names on the Hijab for example. In addition, Diamo is the first one ever and still the only one who introduced dedicated design for young ladies under another production line called Diamo Junior. Furthermore, Diamo designs specific shapes of crystal rocks and requested Swarovski to produce it and those shapes are limited to Diamo; Sworovski will not produce or sell them to anyone else. Diamo as well is the first and the only one who provides customization service, where we design the hijab to match any outfit same to the current hijab I am wearing which matches my top; this service is perfect for the bride who is preparing for her marriage life. Furthermore, Diamo is the only one who provide after sale service; where Diamo offers 2 months guarantee.

Diamo World is available at Pause, Al-Tilal Complex, Shwaikh @DiamoWorld

Through Diamo World, how can girls be trendy while being veiled? Being veiled does not mean that you are not trendy, hijab will never ever prevent ladies of being fashionable, chick and stylish. When wearing Diamo, you will surely be stylish as Diamo keeps using the latest trends whether it’s the textile or the colors and using the latest Swarovski Elements; Swarovski introduced her 2015 crystal collection in the end of Sep and Diamo is one of the first people who placed the order at beginning of September to be the first who uses those crystals. What are the different designs do you offer to your customers? I do design with Swarovski and lace. As mentioned above, Diamo is the first one who uses customer names on the hijab in addition to being the first and only who can customize the hijab to match the customer’s outfit. Diamo introduces specific hijabs for young ladies (9+ years old). Furthermore, Diamo started the production of the unique turban. Diamo keeps offering unique designs that are not available in the market with high quality. What are Diamo World’s future plans for its clients? With all this success, Diamo did not even start yet! This is only a period where I am testing the water and studying the market. There will be a great transformation in the work and the designs; soon there will be limited new design using Italian textile that is not available in the Kuwaiti market. Diamo will rebrand and reposition itself and create revolution in the Hijab market. I also called my Instagram account ‘Diamoworld’ to keep a room for different products other than only the hijab in future; note that the account will be redesigned as well. And also one of the future plans is to sell worldwide. Where can customers find Diamo? Currently we have our section in Pause at AlTilal Complex in addition to the Instagram account which is @diamoworld. If the shop changed in future, we will notify our customers through our Instagram account. So, follow @ diamoworld to see our new designs. Thanks to the model Sally Al-Nargesii, follow her on @ sallyalnargesii.

Being veiled does not mean that you are not trendy.

Yet, why should you depend on the word of mouth when you can find the doctor you need through a special App called AbiDoc. With more the 600 doctors available at AbiDoc, the AbiDoc team of Dr. Musaad Al-Razouki, executive chairman, Mohammed Al-Ali, chief executive officer, and Eng. Dr. Al-Razouki explained, “At the beginning it was hard to help people understand just what it is we are doing here. People have grown accustomed to calling for a doctor or a surgery, perhaps holding on the line for a long time, and often not getting an appointment time which suit them. AbiDoc shortcuts the whole circuit and puts the patient with the right doctor at the right time”. What are your future plans for AbiDoc? Their ultimate vision to have every doctor in Kuwait signed up and accessible via AbiDoc. “First Kuwait private health sector”, Al-Ali says, “and then expand beyond Kuwait. Making Kuwait Proud Volunteer Work

Tareq Al-Ibrahim Implementing CSR at Q8BookStore with Fajer Ahmed With Corporations contributing to society through Corporate Social Responsibility, Local Businesses are walking along this path to give back to their community. For that reason, STUDENTALK is proud to introduce Q8Books that has been conducting charity work inside and outside of Kuwait. Tareq Al-Ibrahim has been working closely with his partner Fajer Ahmed to engage the Kuwaiti society with educational books as well as building libraries outside of Kuwait. Here is an interview with Al-Ibrahim to embark you on the journey of Q8Book’s experience. How did you incorporate education with charity? I think that every project or person should always think about how to give back to the community by incorporating education with charity, whether it is by providing free education or running an awareness campaign, that is what keeps a community running. It is a lot easier for us at Q8Books to incorporate education with charity as our project revolves around books. We encourage writing in Kuwait by providing a platform for local writers to display their books and hold educational events free of charge. We also have kids storytelling regularly. We make sure that our books are affordable to everyone with a maximum selling price of 5KD and a return back policy for 50% store credit. We have also worked closely with other organizations like OXAdventure to provide books to children that are less fortunate around the world, like an orphanage in India and a library in Rwanda. What are the types of books you provide at Q8 Books? Everything! We believe that everyone should have the right to find and read any topics they are interested in. Thankfully, we offer a variety of genres that cater to all readers. Our fiction section includes mystery, suspense, thrillers, young adult, sci-fi and women’s fiction. We also provide non-fiction books that consist of biographies, history, politics, business, health & fitness, art & crafts, cooking and self-help. Who are Q8 Bookstores main supporters? Q8books is a community project and it really took a village to make it happen. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped out, whether it was by renovating the store or donating books to us, this non-profit project would have not happened without them. Our biggest supporters are our affiliates Bayt Lothan as they have provided us with a home, which was an amazing kick start to our project.

In what ways do you believe that CSR has helped in the grow of Q8 bookstore? As a non-profit project, revolving around social responsibility, it hasn’t only helped us, it has made us. The sense of community when you walk in would have not happened if we didn’t involve the community every step of the way. As you have made an impact on Kuwait through education and charity, what are the other fields that you are planning to work on in the future? There are many opportunities we would like to pursue. Our main goal now is to encourage reading in Kuwait amongst the students by partnering up with schools and universities. We have been working on making reading cool. We would also love to collaborate with charities that work in Kuwait and abroad to provide books for those in need. So if you are reading this and can help in any way possible, feel free to check us out on social media.

More than 800 students got their certificates after completing the LOYAC Summer Program 2014 on the closing ceremony that was held at LOYAC headquarters in Qibliya School. WHO WILL WIN THE ''MOST TALENTED'' COMPETITION IN:

Introduce yourself to the readers.

I am a person who loves playing the guitar and it has become my biggest passion through the years.

What is your talent?

The talent that I grew up enjoying and playing is guitar. It allowed me to express myself through music.

GUITAR How did you develop your talent?

My talent for guitar began about 2 years ago but I have been playing since I was a little boy with a practice guitar at home. I realized how much I loved it after one of my friends came over with a classical guitar that had an acoustic string. Ever since then, playing this instrument has become my passion and I never thought of going back.

What are your future plans?

First of all, I want to finish my studies at ACK. Afterwards, I am planning to learn everything that I can on music theory and sound engineering to further improve my knowledge. Through that, I would like to start recording my music and also participate in small gigs and tours whenever it’s possible.

Did you encounter any obstacles?

I have encountered obstacles while learning the guitar but then I came to realise that these obstacles can easy be resolved by relaxing & enjoying the journey of learning new techniques or songs.

Ever since then, playing this instrument has become my passion and I never thought of going back. Who supported your talent?

All my friends and family have supported me greatly through this journey and I have them to thank for everything. They have attended all my shows and performances up to date and there is really nothing more that I can ask from them.

Any last words for the readers?

Determination is the key to success. If you love something or wanted something, it won’t be achieved by wishing upon a star! You need to work hard, stay focused, and enjoy every single moment of it. That is the only way that you will be able to succeed and master anything you put your mind to.

‫مسابقة الطلبة‬

Introduce yourself to the readers.

My name is Yousef Malik and I am half Kuwaiti and half Pakistani. I’m 22 years old and turning 23 on Halloween.

What is your talent?

My talent is playing the guitar which I’ve been playing now for approximately 7 years. In addition, I learnt a technique where I am able to play the drum on the guitar while strumming and have so far encountered none who can do the same.

How did you develop your talent?

Since the age of 11, I have always wanted to learn the guitar and luckily my neighbour was an expert at it, so I told him to teach me. Therefore, by the end of the first month I was playing my first song.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to complete my studies and become a professor in Harvard or Yale. Some people say I dream to big to which I reply “you think too small.”

Did you encounter any obstacles?

I never really encountered obstacles as my friends and family have always supported my interest in the guitar. However, the only obstacle was performing in front of a large crowd which I overcame, through performing continuously.

Who supported your talent?

All my friends and family have supported my talent, including the random strangers that give me requests to perform a particular song when on an outing!

Some people say I dream to big to which I reply “you think too small.” Any last words for the readers?

I believe that if you really want something then go for it. There’s a saying that always motivates me to do anything I put my mind to. “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”

The students at the Marketing and Management Club in Kuwait University absolutely loved the food that was offered as Chef Adoola “dropped off” some of her greatest creations in order to make them try it. She interacted with everyone and kept the mood upbeat throughout the small gathering. There was her famous braised beef lasagna, very different to any lasagna that you have ever been able to try before. It embraces all the favors you love allowing the meat to literally just fall apart as you eat it. Another dish out of the three that Chef Adoola brought the Braised Spicy Lamb Shanks which went deliciously well with the parmesan mashed potato. Lastly, they had the scrumptious Roasted Duck with hoisin sauce, Chinese pancakes and scallion. Needless to say, the students were in shock as to how great the food was as one of the members admitted that the lasagna was simply the best that she has ever tried! The STUDENTALK team invited loved the food and we feel as though it is something that everyone should try at least once mainly because one time will never be enough! The care and love behind the food is clear to see and it’s a guarantee that you will be able to find something you enjoy on the menu. Chef Adoola interacting with all of the students, it even made the experience and the food tastier and a lot more enjoyable. When it comes to the palate, Chef Adoola believes that we are no longer divided into countries with their own unique cuisines, but rather a cosmopolitan nation of flavor seekers searching for mouth-watering moments no matter the origins. That is one of the many things that make Drop Off unique to anything you tried before. Ordering Drop Off to your gatherings is an experience in itself as the food cooked by the star chef herself and delivered from the kitchen straight to you! Calorie Counting Is it the right way to go?

Since we can remember, calorie counting was always one of the best options when someone decides to go on a diet. Because it has been done for so long and has been recommended countless times by others, we don’t really stop to think about how it could be negative for us. Not everything that is recommended automatically means that we should do it. Well, here is a quick look at the positives and negatives of calorie counting. Let’s focus with the positive aspects of this first. Calorie counting is a great way for us to make healthy food choices. Through counting, we are able to know exactly how much food we have eaten and how it would be good/bad for us in the future. Also, when counting our calorie intake, we are a lot more aware of what and when we should eat and, through that, we are able to lose weight in a very healthy manner. Another great thing about this method of dieting is that we don’t really need a nutritionist in order to start it. Calorie counting can be done by practically anyone at anytime and this removes the hassle of having to see your doctor beforehand in order to make sure that it’s safe for you to start this specific diet. Furthermore, the method of calorie counting isn’t pricey and this is one of the main reasons why many opt for it. Many other diets come with lists on what exactly someone can/can’t eat or drink during the diet and it usually costs them quite a lot of money. With calorie counting, that worry is taken aside since you have a lot more choices. Some other advantages of calorie counting are that it helps you estimate when you can reach your ideal weight, you can ensure that you burn more calories than you take in, and it helps you become a healthier person in the long run. One of the disadvantages of calorie counting (even though it may seem minor at the moment) is the stress that comes with it. It’s quite difficult to be thinking of your calorie intake every day and every time before having a certain meal. Also, you need to keep in mind that calories are not all that matter in a diet. Other than exercise, you will have to also keep an eye on the amount of fat, sugar, and the nutritional value. Obsession can quickly overtake your thinking when choosing this way of dieting since “calorie counting” will be on your mind all the time, even before you can think of how good your food looks!

66

Counting calories is not a bad option if you do it correctly. Just like any other diet, some will work for you while others won’t. It depends on your body and how you fulfil the chosen dieting option. So, my advice would be to look through all options before choosing one that is right for you.

The impeccable expression of Versace’s glamour and luxury, the Vanitas watches collection is part of the brand’s accessories line and draws inspiration from its decorative elements: the matelassé effect Baroque pattern and the Medusa head appear on the dial, the Greek key is engraved on the bezel, and the entire strap is spangled with another of the Maison’s iconic details, a plethora of studs that illuminate it like myriad points of light. A second, larger strap supplied with the watch reprises the quilted Baroque pattern. For next spring-summer, Vanitas extends the color palette to lime yellow, turquoise and purple. These colors, seen in the prêt-à-porter Versace collection, are reinterpreted in more vivid plain shades and transformed into vibrant monochrome colors with the of use exclusively glossy materials: IP rose gold for the case, enamel for the dial and bezel, and patent leather for the strap. Sumptuous and seductive, Vanitas is quintessential Versace style. A truly iconic product that never goes unnoticed.

Apple's New Players The iPhone 6, 6+, & Apple Watch Gadgets 4.7 inch screen, HD Retina Display, 8-megapixel camera, 1080p HD video recording, online payments done through a chip, and many more features. Yes, that is the iPhone 6 released by Apple on September 9. With the same built-in specifications but a 5.5 inch screen, you get yourself the iPhone 6 Plus. Both Smart-phones have come into the world and they certainly have not disappointed the millions of people waiting to get their hands on it.

With Samsung and HTC coming out with very competitive phones, Apple Inc knew for a fact that something needed to happen. A big change was needed. A shock was required in order to show everyone that they are simply not going to give up anytime soon. With the world waiting to see the iPhone 6 finally being released, they gave the world what they were waiting for and so much more. With the introduction of the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple are simply not going anywhere anytime soon. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus both come with the same features but they are both phones that have come out with a lot of improvements since the iPhone 5s. Let’s start off with one of the main problems that iPhone users face: the battery. Well, if you’re on 3G, the iPhone 6 has up to 14-hours talk-time with up to 250 hours of standby time. As for the iPhone 6 Plus, the talk-time can go up to 24 hours with 300 hours of standby time. That is certainly an improvement to what we saw with the iPhone 5s.

Apple releasing the iPhone 6 Plus brought up the talks of Samsung’s Note. Well, the idea may have come from there but they are definitely not copying anyone right now. The Samsung Note is one of their main phones as they recently released their fourth edition of the series. As for iPhone, it is simply a need in the market that they felt they need to penetrate and therefore they were able to make it happen with the iPhone 6 Plus. Also, it adds more options for anyone who is a loyal iPhone user and would like to have a bigger phone.

Many have pointed out that they felt as though there is no major need to upgrade from the 5s to the iPhone 6 since there aren’t many differences that one can really see. Others say otherwise as the specifications are what really matter right now. Maybe, with more time, things could change but at the moment it seems like the new iPhone is the gadget to own.

Incorporating powerful technologies into something small enough to wear on the wrist presented some very big design challenges. Which led to even bigger creative solutions. Apple Watch combines a series of remarkable feats of engineering into a singular, entirely new experience. One that blurs the boundaries between the physical object and the software that powers it. The crown has been a standard feature on watches for more than a century. The new Digital Crown is a multifunctional input device that lets you zoom, scroll, and select without covering the screen. It’s as integral to Apple Watch as the Click Wheel is to iPod. Or the mouse is to Mac. They also built the new Watch OS from the wrist up. The Home screen lets you quickly find your favorite apps. The custom font is easy to read at arm’s length. And the force-sensitive Retina display puts more functionality at your fingertip. Technically speaking, it’s one amazing little device.

Pull&Bear Let's go back in time Fashion For Her

The characteristic look of some of the iconic decades of the 20th century – particularly the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s– make an appearance among the essential inspirations for the Pull&Bear women’s collections for the upcoming Autumn/Winter season.

Each of the lines feature innovative textures, using technical fabrics like neoprene and quilting, with sophisticated finishes and prints. Ample cocoon silhouettes and structured materials show up in both 60s-inspired preppy juvenile lines, characterised by their straight cuts, and in 70s bohemian looks, with flowing dresses, rustic fabrics, patchworks and handmade details. Fascinating isn't it? There is also space for tie-shaped or Africaninspired geometric patterns and texts evoking advertising slogans. A-line dresses, pleats, culottes and aviator and bomber jackets are key garments, as well as looks that combine the same prints on top and bottom. The colour palette includes winter pastels like dirty green, mauve and dusty rose; a range of greens focusing on khaki, olive and hunter; and strong maroons, reds and blues; all combined with timeless basics like white, black and camel. It's a collection that cannot be missed!

How do you Shave? Grooming For Him

1

There is no denying one simple fact: Men like to look good. The problem arises when they need to focus on grooming themselves and having to “look good” for either work or an outing with some friends. With that said, one major concentration is a man’s beard. There are many ways for someone to shave but, what is the correct way? Here are a few tips that can make shaving a better experience for you the next time you’re getting ready for a day out!

Use Shaving Cream! First of all, don’t use soap or any type of cream substitute. Shaving cream is used to create a foamy layer where it can soften your skin and make it a lot easier for you to shave. The best shaving creams include fatty acids, glycerin, and oils which add to the foaminess. Gillette Fusion Proglide Gel are the best choice to go with here in Kuwait and it will prove to be very beneficial.

2 3

The Shaving Brush Helps. A Lot. Using the brush in order to place the cream on your face uses less time and is much less messy that using your own hands. Also, and more importantly, the brush helps remove dead skin cells and therefore you lessen the risk of bumps and rashes on your skin once you’re done.

Change The Blades Of Your Razor Regularly! Nothing really feels better than using a razor when shaving, especially when it still has new blades! Now, we’re not saying that you must change your blades every single time but don’t keep using the same ones for too long! The best razors you can find here in Kuwait are Mach. The reason is that they have many different blades and also are very light on the skin. The Mach 3 Razor Turbo Blades from Gillette are arguably the best on the market right now.

4 5

Do Not Rush It! Yes, we’re giving you ways to make your shaving procedure easier and faster but that does not mean that you need to rush it. Take your time on it. Wash your face before it and leave soap on it for a while. Then, once washing the soap off, you can apply the shaving cream as we talked about earlier. With that, you lessen risks of razor rashes and also it keeps your skin soft and makes is a lot easier to shave. Afterwards, wash again and use after-shave as well.

Using After-Shave The use of after-shave is extremely important. It replaces the lost moisture in the skin and also refreshes the skin right before you’re going out! This really works. The Gillette Sensitive Skin AfterShave has a minty smell that isn’t too strong and will only help with your skin leaving a great smell once you’re done.

These were just a few tips on shaving but will prove to be valuable once you try them. Trust us on this one, guys, you will be thanking me later!

New Model Heralds next chapter in Mercedes-Benz success story and sets new standards in the premium medium-size category. 95 millimetres longer, 40 millimetres wider, and a more spacious interior: The Mercedez-Benz C-Class is the car to have.

Sensuous clarity and purist forms

Its dynamic design exudes sensuous clarity and arouses emotions. Modern aesthetics were the source of inspiration for the new Saloon's luxurious lines and surfaces. Customers can choose from three different design and equipment lines for the exterior and interior. As for the AVANTGARDE line, it showcases the C-Class as a sporty Saloon with the EXCLUSIVE line emphasizing on an elevated status and modern luxury. As for the AMG Line, it gives the C-Class a decidedly sporty appearance. There is something for everyone!

High-class interior with fine details

The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior on an extremely high level. With the high-class materials and new designs, they perfectly combine luxury and clarity with dynamic sportiness, which contribute to the high-class appeal of the interior. You won’t feel a second of discomfort with the C-Class as the new, sporty front seats offer more comfort in the shoulder area and also expanded legroom for the rear passengers. The touchpad developed by Mercedes-Benz in the handrest marks a further evolutionary step such as that on a smartphone. The new head-up display in the C-Class is quite similar to that in a fighter jet! It displays important information directly in the driver's field of vision on the front windscreen. The system provides information on speed, posted speed limits, navigation instructions and messages from the DISTRONIC system.

Rigid body

Thanks to intelligent and innovative lightweight construction, the aluminium hybrid body is around 70 kg lighter than a conventional steel body. The vehicle's overall weight is even reduced by up to 100 kilograms.

74

Comfort meets dynamism

The suspension responds more sensitively to steering movements and allows a sporty, agile driving style. The new C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment that can be fitted with an optional air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axle. The driver can use a switch to choose between the various characteristics: "Comfort", "ECO", "Sport" and "Sport+".

‫أسلوب الحياة السيارات‬

Intelligent drive

The new C-Class offers numerous innovative safety and assistance systems. It is equipped as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and fatigue. On motorways the COMAND Online navigation function offers nearby break options as stopovers, provided the system has been specified in the vehicle. The ATTENTION ASSIST function offers an adjustable level of sensitivity and can inform drivers in a separate view in the instrument cluster about their level of drowsiness and how long they have been driving since their last break.

Air conditioning: signals from space

Mercedes-Benz has systematically advanced and substantially improved the air conditioning system in the new C-Class, which will surely be important in Kuwait. The new C-Class is also the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation.

Vibrant infotainment

A new multimedia generation offers intuitive operation in the new C-Class, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects, which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. Equipped with the unique Frontbass system, this avantgarde acoustic system uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the woofers. The result is a listening experience almost on a par with a concert hall. A Burmester® surround sound system is optionally available.
