WORDS STAND OUT THAT

Dear Students, Frustrated and angry, my colleague entered my office and started hollering: “Till when!? Till when will I trust people and get them close to my heart only to discover they are nothing but petty beings!! When will I start seeing people for who they truly are form the beginning.” I shook my head calmly and asked her to sit down and relax: “The day you stop being beautiful is the day you will see the ugliness in others. May that day, never come.” Holding her face down with both hands, she raised her eyes and looked straight into mine: “but I am tired, tired of the disappointments, tired of opening my life to people only to throw them out of it…I am tired of being part of this ugly life.” looking down in despair. Gently pulling her chin up, I smiled “you will never be part of their ugly life and they shall not be part of your beautiful world. Petty people will always remain petty, and beautiful people shall only grow stronger with time. Never feel sorry for those who leave your life, they probably didn’t deserve to be in it to begin with” Pulling her head even higher “take the pain you feel today and use it as your fuel. Let it make you stronger, more focused and determine. Show the world and yourself, what and who you are, and always know when you are in the right, you walk taller while those who have wronged you only become smaller with every passing day.” WRITE TO US info@ph7-kw.com

PASSION

Passion for Arts

Raghad Alawnah When did you start painting? I started when I was around 11 years old. Who discovered your talent? How did it evolve? It wasn’t really a matter of ‘discovering’. I remember in the 7th or 8th grade we were assigned to paint a flower. With the brush in my hand it just came to me naturally and I remember how pleased my teacher was with my piece and I just thought, ‘oh hey, I’m not so bad!’ So in a way my teachers were the ones that had made me realise that I could paint. My painting developed from having art classes at school. I also chose to study art in more depth in the last couple of years in high school, which helped me focus on painting more. When was your first exhibition/official appearance? I never really had an exhibition, although I did participate in a couple of art competitions here in Kuwait. Who and what inspired you to paint? Anything and anyone can be an inspiration for me to paint. I feel like magic can be done with painting, through the shapes and different colours creating something, out of nothing. 22 - 23

Hide not your talents, they for use were made. What’s a sundial in the shade?

Where do you see Kuwait in this field? Well in terms of painting and art in general, not a lot of emphasis or attention is placed on it in Kuwait. Some private associations, however, have held art competitions. Personally, I have come across a talented Kuwaiti peer, in university, who had her artworks exhibited at ‘Ard el Ma’ared’. I know of so many talented people in this field and it’s nice to have people around in this country who understand and appreciate it. What was the biggest challenge you faced as an Arab painter? I guess when you say ‘Arab’ painter you immediately think of how painters in the Arab world don’t get enough attention as painters in the West do, which is kind of sad but true. I didn’t really face any challenges and if I were to it wouldn’t really have to do with being ‘Arab’, I mean I got support from my family and friends but I do hope that the importance of this field becomes more in the Arab region. What are you doing nowadays? I haven’t painted for quite some time from the juggling of

assignments and quizzes but I am definitely going to do some hard core painting this summer! Where do you plan to reach with your paintings? I paint mostly for my own pleasure and as a hobby, but I do hope that my paintings will inspire people and also hopefully encourage them to paint as well. Today when you look back is there anything you want to change? I wish I had painted more. I also would have wanted to enter a field that has to do with art at university. Who are your favourite artists? The first ones that come to mind are Paul Cezanne and William Turner, they’re definitely my favourite. What would you like to say to STUDENTALK readers? We all have our own unique and individual talents. These talents are not to be wasted and must be used; after all you have them for a reason. www.studentalk-online.com

Anime Club Vision: To unite cultures through the power of an influential and inspirational form of entertainment and introduce the Japanese and Asian culture as well as studying their interesting stories and perspectives. Mission: Enrich students with the knowledge of Asian cultures mainly Japanese culture. Make the experience of learning more exciting and interesting through anime and mangas. Give students the chance to learn about the language, art, history, tradition as well as the culture of anime itself. Offer life lessons and wisdom through the story lines of existing anime and manga novels. Our past events consist of: Anime showings, Drawing courses, “What is Anime” Lecture. “Geeky Day”, Cosplaying at the C.A.P.S ON Carnival at GUST. Our planned events consist of: Manga & Anime Trading, video game competitions, manga writing courses.   Members: With twenty active members working on managing the club, and twenty-five silent members that can offer assistance, the Anime Club has grown over the past three years of its existence at GUST. They are starting to become more active and more recognized. And there is no better way to know more about the club than to read the members’ views:

30 - 31

“What is the Anime Club to you and what made you want to join the club?” Khaled Al-Sabt: The Anime Club is a cool place where we can meet awesome dudes. I joined the Anime Club so I can find people who relate to me. Ali Bastaki: Anime Club is not just any other club; it’s a place where my colleagues are like my second family. It’s fun to discuss and debate on similar anime we watch, plus it’s a place where I can smile and laugh, where no one can call me a kid for the things I watch. Why I have chosen to join is that our club president is such wonderful hard worker that’s loved by everyone and I would like to support her in making this a very active and popular club. Mohammed Al-Qaffas: I joined the Anime Club knowing that I will find people who share the same interests in anime, games and anything related to them (geeky stuff) which I did. I can honestly say I have met many cool and awesome people in the past 2 years of being in the Anime Club. Also the Anime Club is like a second home to me where I know that I can be myself and everyone will understand me and know where I come from. Sara Iskandarani: I joined the Anime Club to meet people who can actually understand what I’m usually talking about, because most of the time people don’t. I can honestly say that I met some awesome cool people in the club! The club is like a second home to me where I can be myself and nobody will judge me for being me. Norah Al-Jassar: The Anime Club is a place where I can be myself without being judged. I also joined it because not many anime related places exist in Kuwait, and finding one in the university with people who actually understand you is awesome.

Sports Club What is the Sports Club? The GUST Sports Club is a student established, nonprofit and non political club that focuses on encouraging students and faculty alike to become more active and change their lifestyles. One of the main goals of this club is to demonstrate healthy living methods, encourage participation in different physical activities and more. Red Bull freestyle football: April 19th, 2012 marked many firsts in the history of GUST University as well as the GUST Sports Club. The first ever Red Bull sponsored Flash Mob, was held in the middle of the GUST campus by South African Football freestyler Christopher Njokwana. At noon, all was calm throughout the university campus, and then suddenly Footballer Christopher Njokwana began full fifteen-minute football freestyle accompanied by music and later by applause from bystanders. Although the traditional Flash Mob, is meant to be an event that takes place spontaneously in the middle of a public place where a group of people come together and put on a performance, this Flash Mob was more of a one-man show. It is usually done for entertainment purposes. In the case of Red Bull’s Flash Mob, the performance was by a single professional footballer. What made this event different from any regular Flash Mob was the fact that it was not planned through social media and viral videos. Since Red Bull and the GUST Sports Club organized it in secret the surprise was all the more entertaining and effective.

CLUBS STAND OUT THAT

ACK Engineering Club Journey The Beginning: We started with three members including the President and Founder, Rafed. The constitution of the club was to have a clear start and good organization. During the first meeting, we discussed the main points of an engineers needs to have the desired future and career. We decided to start with these points: Enrich the engineers with the required qualifications by providing certificates. Creating effective and healthy engineers. Having fun using science and technology to gain knowledge. The club was established with certain conditions in conjunction to GPA, C.V, and performance. We have been accepting diploma, bachelor-engineering students only. We started with three positions, President, Club Organizer and Creative Designer. We had a lot of work and a heavy load, especially the paper work between us and the ACK management; LEAP. Groups & Members: This club has been divided into eight groups. Each group works individually according to its responsibility and tasks. The groups are: Project Supporting Group. Website Group. Planning Group. Practical Group. Advertising Group. Reading Group. Radio Station Group. Magazine Group. By December 2011, we reached a total of 81 members. Achievements and activities: A lot of important goals have been achieved. Starting with the engineering club’s website, which is being supervised by a specified team. Also, we established courses and workshops in different fields that are related to the engineering education. In addition, we created our own football team, produced the club’s IDs and also succeeded in creating relationships with other clubs outside ACK. Furthermore; we proved IEEE memberships and started an ACM student chapter. We started our events and activities in September 2011, creating our own posters, proposals, projects and ideas. 34 - 35

The first event was in September 2011, The Open House. The reason behind this event was attracting new members that reached a then 60 members. The event was planned according to a calendar of our own which was spread by the ACK management. The second event was Math Olympics. The first of it’s kind in ACK, with four exams each consisting of 25 questions. The winners would earn a gold, silver and bronze medal respectively. The third event was Chess Tournament. Each player competes with three others, with the winner earning three points and the loser, none. The fourth event was Science Day. It was about displaying science equations, experiments and documentations to provide knowledge about science and scientists history to the engineers and non-engineers. The fifth event was Green Day; which consists of our aim to plant 1000 trees all over Kuwait and hope to reach that target within two years. By the end of December 2011, we made an engineering day; tea party, where different types of tea were served. Gathering all members and staff, knowing each other better and sharing information and ideas. In 2012, we haven’t had many events. Our activities can be summarized in science day that was more interactive than the previous one. Opening our books section in the library, starting by collecting books from students to help all students in their researches.

Future Plans: As we have a vision, some of our planned targets waits it’s turn to be applied. 1. Have a sponsor, who must be in technology, engineering or science fields to be able to understand our vision and work. 2. Have our own workshop. 3. Have our own newsletter. 4. Have our own radio station. 5. Makes educational trips to different companies and factories. 6. Make a math lab office. 7. Support student ideas, projects, and research and implement them. 8. Scheduling professors and doctors visits to ACK from outside universities.

Thus, we have participated in two large competitions, Microsoft Imagine Cup and Robotics In the first one, we decided as a team of four students to go and compete internationally in software designing. Unfortunately, as engineers we were not specialized in computer science, though it depended on solving problems using backgrounds and information that Microsoft provided. We made a time management system for students, and it was made for the club as assistance. We also entered a workshop of robotics with two teams; each team had three members. We learned a lot of things and had a certificate after making a custom shape. On June 22,2012 we are competing in robotics competition at Kuwait University under the supervision of organization RASK.

Obstacles: We have faced obstacles that need to be solved to enlarge our chance to achieve greater goals. Such as a sponsor, in addition we need more support from ACK to make our work easier as everything depends on the student’s ability and our own funding. We also need a residence to work in and receive our visitors. Uniqueness: We have been able to score the highest points in SPARC clubs competition, though the club is working with only half of its original power due to non-active members and low performance. Also the engineering club group is the highest activeness group in 6ulab.com with more than 20 active members. In addition, our club is the first club that acts under two managements, CASA and SPARC.

GRADES Name: Ahmed Hassanein Age: 20 Major: Computer Engineering University: AUK

QHave you always had a high GPA? Ahmed: Yes at AUK it’s always been good. Sarah: Yes.

QHow do your peers look at you because of your GPA? Ahmed: Well, most of them treat me normally and some come to me for help. Sarah: Like a normal person.

QDo you feel like you are part of your peers or alienated from them? Ahmed: I feel just as close to them as anyone. Sarah: Friendship does not depend on your GPA. How does it affect your social life?

Q

Ahmed: I don’t think it affects it at all. I manage my time so that I do my studying when I have to, and still do not miss out on time with friends. Sarah: It doesn’t affect it in any way.

QHow does your GPA affect your relationship with the teachers? Ahmed: My relationship has always been good with most teachers. I wouldn’t say the reason behind it is a high GPA but I guess that’s always a contributing factor. Sarah: I don’t think my teachers know about my GPA.

QWhat drives you to get such high grades? Ahmed: The satisfaction at the end of the semester; knowing I owned the courses. 38 - 39

% Name: Sarah Al-Ashban Age: 21

Major: Finance

University: GUST

Sarah: Ambition. I want to get high grades, so I work hard to achieve them.

QWhat does it take for you to get such a high GPA?

Ahmed: Doing my assignments a few days before their due date to make sure I have time to do them, and doing them perfectly. Also, when it comes to midterms/quizzes I usually plan my studying a good 3-5 days before the midterm/quiz, once again to make sure I have time to go through everything. The reason why I choose 3-5 days is because I just go through the slides/notes/ exercises/book more than once so that I have a firm grip on the material. Sarah: Studying.

QAre you involved in any extra curricular activities? Ahmed: If you go to the AUK hangout, you’ll usually find me there playing table tennis. Outside of university, I play football there every Friday morning along with guitar. Sarah: Yes, I am currently the president of the Anime Club at GUST.

QAre you involved in any charitable organization or activities? Ahmed: Yes, many. Sarah: Sadly, no.

QDo you believe that students with high GPAs will have a better future than those who score average GPAs? Ahmed: They have a higher potential to achieve greater things, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they will. Sarah: In my opinion, your GPA is a number that measures the amount of effort you put into studying. It does not measure your success rate in the future. People are smart in different ways, some are “book smart” and some are “street smart”. In other words, a higher GPA would get you into a top university. As for jobs, some do look at your GPA and some look at your experience and capabilities.

Trade Balance? What is Trade Balance? The Trade Balance refers to the difference between exports of goods and services out of the country, and imports. Trade Balance is the largest component of a country’s current account in its balance of payments (BOP) accounts. A positive Trade Balance (surplus) indicates that exports are greater than imports. When imports exceed exports, the country experiences a trade deficit. Because foreign goods are usually purchased using foreign currency, trade deficits usually reflect currency leaking out of the country. Such currency outflows may lead to a natural depreciation, unless countered by comparable capital inflows. At a bare minimum, deficits fundamentally weigh down the value of the currency. In addition, the trade balance is likely to differ across the business cycle. In export-led growth (such as oil and early industrial goods), the balance of trade will improve during an economic expansion. However, with domestic demand led growth (as in the United States and Australia) the trade balance will worsen at the same stage in the business cycle. Economies such as Canada, Japan, and Germany which have savings surpluses, typically run trade surpluses. China, a high growth economy, has tended to run trade surpluses. A higher savings rate generally corresponds to a trade surplus. Correspondingly, the U.S. with its lower savings rate 40 - 41

has tended to run high trade deficits, especially with Asian nations. Factors that can affect the trade balance include: 1-The cost of production (land, labor, capital, taxes, incentives, etc.) in the exporting economy vis-Ă -vis those in the importing economy 2-Exchange rate movements 3-The cost and availability of raw materials, intermediate goods and other inputs 4-Multilateral, bilateral and unilateral taxes or restrictions on trade 5-Non-tariff barriers such as environmental, health or safety standards 6-The availability of adequate foreign exchange with which to pay for imports 7-Prices of goods manufactured at home (influenced by the responsiveness of supply) Source: Wikipedia, Investopedia & Global Research

Barack Obama considering festival

Rapper Jay Z, will be headlining the opening night of the first annual ‘Budweiser Made in America’ event over America’s Labor Day weekend between the 1st and 2nd of September and he will try to persuade good friend Barack Obama to join him. Jay Z was quoted as saying that he will try to convince Obama to perform his Al Green (famed Gospel and R&B Singer) rendition during the event, however it is not set in stone just yet. He is also hoping to persuade wife Beyonce to join him at the festival. So the question remains, will Jay Z succeed in convincing Barack Obama to perform at the festival?!

Leonardo DiCaprio rents out Malibu Beach House

Still haven’t planned your summer yet? For just $75,000 a month, you can stay at Leonardo DiCaprio’s seven-bedroom, six-bathroom, Malibu beach house! The 17,679-square-foot home was purchased in October 2002 for $6 million and includes a comfy, shabby-chic décor. It also offers a backyard deck leading straight to the ocean, an entertainment centre, an outdoor patio, dining room, and an extraordinary amount of natural sunlight.

Celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez have been reported to flock to Beverly Hills specialist Dr Harold Lancer for ‘luxurious’ facials that combine LED lights with New Zealand sheep placenta gel at the cost of $600. The mere ‘justification’ throughout could be considered that the afterbirth gel is infused with gold flakes. 48 - 49

Corey Feldman arrests his stalker

Feldman posted every breaking detail on twitter of his coming together with single mom, stalker, and squatter before having her arrested. Corey tweeted: “I’m very afraid right now...I have psycho stalker living in my house. California laws protect these people. Zen and I need protection.” “Its California renter’s rights, and squatters rights. I’ve asked her to leave for over a month already they won’t force her...Even with a child.” “PSYCHO STALKER UPDATE: She is currently behind bars!! Lets hope she stays there for a while. Thank you for all your love and support through this!” After bailing herself out, the ‘psycho stalker’ apparently asked police to follow her over to Feldman’s residence and watch her gather her belongings. Although not everything Corey says could be considered credible, following the domestic drama, Corey also tweeted: “As if this week couldn’t get weirder, 3 UFOs showed up at the Coliseum during The Wall! My mother, son, security and friends all saw it!”

Gary Dourdan slammed with arrest warrant

Known for his previous role in CSI as Warrick Brown, Gary Dourdan was hit with a bench warrant for not appearing in court following his domestic violence case. Dourdan was arrested back in November for felony battery charges after ex-girlfriend, Nicole Vail Cannizzaro, claimed the actor punched her in the face and broke her nose during an altercation. Dourdan has also battled drug and money issues since leaving the hit CBS series in 2008. Dourdan has been working on a project in Morocco and, per his attorneys, was unable to make his scheduled flight from Frankfurt in time to make the pretrial hearing. However, he arrived at the court in Los Angeles with 45 minutes to spare after his long journey and Judge Stephanie Sautner recalled the bench warrant. He is due to be back in court on 7 June. www.studentalk-online.com

Gucci collection Spring/Summer 2012 The Gucci eyewear collection for men reinterprets the smart world of Savile Row in the Sixties and Seventies, when it was home to aristocrats, dandies, singers, noblemen and rock stars, who loved playing with tradition and wore large-shaped sunglasses with light lenses, highlighting the eyes. A stunning design and androgynous sensuality: these sunglasses fascinate with their unique elegance, a combination of rock spirit and ‘sculptural glamour’. Their square shape conveys a strong personality, highlighted by the multifaceted volumes in Optyl, a registered trademark for an ultralightweight plastic material with refined colour effects.

Lanvin men’s accessories Military inspirations punctuated with skins, fabrics and leather in a palette of khaki and black, livened by pops of colour and unlikely pairings: such is the spirit of Lanvin’s men’s collection for Summer 2012. Necklaces and bracelets have a tribal inspiration and are decorated with horn and wood beads as well as fabric remnants, and are assembled by hand. The industrial spirit appears again with wide belts in aged leather, featuring hinges and aged buckles. Finally, the narrow ties play a game of contrasts, available in white leather, python or black silk chintz.

How to control exam stress Amongst most students, exam time is considered to be the most stressful time of the year. This could come from pressure of family expectations or nervousness through the realisation that perhaps you have not been working as hard as you could have done throughout the year! Here’s some useful advice to help you to manage stress. Plan your time wisely Try to make an effort throughout the semester to keep up with weekly assignments, lectures and class readings. If you can’t be disciplined enough on your own, then work through this with a friend! As exams approach, try to set two to three hours a day as a study block. Correlate this to your peak concentration hours, for example if you consider yourself a morning person then after breakfast would be the best time. Being organised and planning a timetable has proven to minimize stress. Find your ‘perfect’ state Research shows that the mood (or state) we are in when we study is the mood we should be in during exam time, this will help us recall information studied. Therefore, while studying, try to create an environment that will be similar to the environment in which you will take your test. This usually means a quiet environment with few distractions. Try to be well-rested and mentally alert while studying, as well as during the exam. Exercise has also been proven to help heighten concentration as well as increase level of performance. If it is possible, plan to exercise before studying as well as before the actual exam. Avoid perfectionism Aiming to become a perfectionist will cause a person to have an unrealistically high expectation of themselves, establishing goals that might be impossible to achieve. Fears of failure to achieve such goals can lead to mental and emotional paralysis. While some can use such expectations to motivate themselves, others find them destructive and self-defeating. This leads to procrastination during study, or even panic attacks during exam time. Therefore, one should always remember to make use of the time they set for studying, being confident in doing their best and forget about it once it’s over, rather than comparing your answers with friends. Avoid exhaustion during exam time Exams are almost always going to be accompanied by stress, manage this stress to make sure it does not break down your physical, mental or emotional health. 60 - 61

No matter how much we might choose to ignore it, a nutritious, well-balanced diet will help the body maintain the needed vitamins and minerals. At least three meals a day and avoid relying on energy drinks or caffeine. Try to fix your sleeping pattern and get plenty of sleep in the process. Practice relaxation techniques, such as Diaphragmatic breathing - close your eyes, breathe in and out slowly and completely while placing your hands on your abdomen, concentrate on it as it expands and contracts. Laughter has also been proven to have a physiological calming effect, this is something even the most cynical can enjoy. Make time for yourself, recreationally enjoying yourself will improve your mood and help return to your studies feeling refreshed and relaxed, in some cases however try not to get addicted to what your recreational activity might be. Do you need Psychotherapy? Each year, thousands of people in Kuwait go to therapy for a broad range of reasons. Some people go to therapy when they are struggling with a relationship problem, when their worries feel out of control, or when their sadness is preventing them from attending to their daily responsibilities. In general, people should consider therapy when their problems are bothering them for more than several days and when the problems are interfering with daily responsibilities and quality of life. How does therapy help? There are many ways therapy works and about 75% of people who try it report benefit. One way therapy helps is that it can teach people specific skills and coping mechanisms. In particular, a lot of distress is caused by chronic negative and pessimistic beliefs and patterns of thought. For example, sometimes people cause themselves a lot of undue worry by frequently anticipating that things will turn out badly and feel strongly that the prediction is a fact (e.g., avoiding talking to someone because you assume that they would not be interested in what you have to say.). Therapy can help teach people to challenge automatic negative/pessimistic thinking patterns which will then have a positive impact on mood. Often, the relationship between the client and therapist is used as a vehicle for understanding the client’s specific concern. Say, for example, someone decides to see a therapist because they have been feeling lonely due to a pattern of pushing people away as soon as feelings start to deepen. Because this is a pattern for the person, it is likely to reoccur with the therapist and when it does, it allows for an opportunity to talk about it and figure out why the person is doing it and how to help. Being able to correct the maladaptive relationship pattern in therapy can lead to healthier and more satisfying relationships outside of therapy. How do I choose a therapist? Kuwait does not have specific licensing requirements to be a psychotherapist. Therefore, you should make sure the therapist has a graduate degree from an accredited institution and you should ask the therapist if they are licensed in their home country or wherever they were trained. Licensing is important because it suggests that the therapist has met a minimum standard of competency. For the most part, there is little risk in going to therapy and 62 - 63

sometimes the best way to determine if you need therapy is to simply ask a therapist. Nicholas Scull, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and has several years experience working with college students in college counseling centers including UCLA, University of WisconsinMadison, and Swarthmore College. He currently works as the Clinical Director at Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (www.fsrikuwait.org). Effervescent and playful, but no less precious for this, Gancino Sparkling represents a breath of fresh air and good cheer. A delightful little charm applied to the casemiddle at 4 o’clock and coloured gemstones set in the revolving top ring represent two mobile features that give the watch a sparkling, vivacious look and together pay tribute to Salvatore Ferragamo’s passion for gemstones. The novel Double Tour version revolves entirely around colour, with juxtapositions designed to emphasise the chromatic effects to the full. The strap winds twice around the wrist and is made of supple leather in various colourways: fuchsia, orange, white or tobacco, set off against pink, sky blue or multicolour topaz stones that embellish the steel or IP gold case with flashes of brilliance. The new Gancino Sparkling Bracelet, on the other hand, has a metal bracelet and is available in two versions: all-steel, with black guilloché dial decorated with the iconic Gancino and a case enriched with black spinels; or IP gold, with dégradé rhodolite stones on the top ring and in the charm.

What is Mesothelium!

The Art& Graphic Design Program (GDES) at AUK inaugurated its Senior Capstone Exhibition. The event was held in the Multipurpose Room and the Auditorium at the AUK Salmiya Campus. The opening ceremony was attended by the AUK President, Dr. Winfred Thompson, and saw a high turnout from AUK students, faculty, parents, and media. During the exhibition, the participating senior students showcased and presented their graduation projects to visitors, who were impressed by the creativity of the designs and concepts. The themes of the exhibition included identity designs, business concepts, awareness projects, child health projects, among others. Social activism campaigns to re-brand identity were the core essence of this year’s exhibition.

The mesothelium cells produce lubricating fluids that enable the intestines, heart, lungs and testicles to move and slide freely. Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that causes the cells to divide without control, destroying the organs either by directly invading them or by restricting their movements. Exposure to large amounts of Asbestos has proved to be the cause in 90% of reported cases. Mesothelioma almost often leads to malignant tumours, degrading the body until death. There have been three reported types of Mesothelioma; Epithelioid, being the most common with 50-70% reported cases, as well as being the most likely to survive, Sarcomatoid, occurring in 7-20% of cases and more fatal as it can affect bone, muscle, cartilage and/or fat and Mixed/biphasic, which makes up for the 20-30% reported, referring to both at once. Symptoms can show 15-50 years after initial exposure with early symptoms including chest pains, shortness of breath, dry cough, and hoarse breathing, often leading to it being mistaken for other problems. Surgery is considered the most common treatment consisting of either removal of the affected area or extraction of fluid followed by chemotherapy or radiation to kill the remaining cancer cells. In 2004, Pemetrexed has been approved as a chemotherapy drug under the manufacturing name Alimta or Pemecad with cited side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite and skin rash. www.studentalk-online.com

The 2012 Red Bull Flugtag event will be the third of its kind in Kuwait following the hugely successful 2010 event which saw 20,000 spectators cheer on over 30 man-made flying machines as they flew into the sky before plunging into the water. The world’s first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992. Since then, more than 100 Red Bull Flugtag events have been held around the world, from London to New York, attracting up to 300,000 spectators! Gaming development with Ahmed Al-Shebli

Studentalk had the opportunity to talk with Ahmed AlShebli, game developer at compassgames and creator of Dewan Al-Kout, which peaked best seller on Nokia N9, ranked eighth out of twenty-five on the apple charts and is available on Iphone, Ipod touch, Ipad and Android. Ahmed originally created utility apps such as scientific and GPA calculators. He was approached by Nokia in 2009 and asked to create an app that would appeal to Kuwaiti tradition. Thus, Dewan Al-Kout was made; a three-a-side card game which he designed to be both easy to use and appealing. With the support of his graphic designer, as well as friends, family, and Nokia, Al-Shebli hopes to continue creating mobile applications designed for touch phones with the aim of making them interactive, eye catching, and simple. His next game, which he hopes to announce by this year, will be the first of its kind in Kuwait. He explained that despite the fact that there are other developers in Kuwait, they have not expanded outside the puzzle genre, a step he is willing to take. Ahmed is quite active on twitter, @compassgames, and hopes to have his website (www.compassgames.net) up and running in the near future.

New delectable dishes from Chef Michael of ZeeBrgr! Having been open for a mere four months at the high-end Palms Hotel on Taawon street in Salwa, ZeeBrgr has already garnered a sizeable following in Kuwait. Based on the idea of contemporary gourmet cuisine, this forward-thinking concept has already brought to Kuwait several delicious, original specialties like the “juicy” and creative ZeeBrgr™, the zesty TartufoBrgr™, the staple ZeeSalad™, and of course, the famous, creamy, and crunchy Holy Cannoli™. Bringing world cuisine between two buns to gourmet lovers is ZeeBrgr’s promise and is often a challenge to its chefs as each new dish that they roll out is considered a hard act to follow! Nevertheless, ZeeBrgr staff continues to deliver on that promise. Having enlisted the talents of Chef Michael from Miami, and Brgr expert Joe Hajjali of Minneapolis, the ZeeBrgr team traveled to several U.S. cities including New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Minneapolis. Having drawn inspiration by the distinct cuisine of these glamorous cities, Chef Michael and Joe brought back several new ideas to share with ZeeBrgr fans.

Enter the Mexico Brgr™ on a special sun-dried tomato bun with creamy Velveeta cheese, nachos, and special mango salsa. Ready to please the palates is the Fish’N Chips Brgr™. With a succulent, generous portion of filet, potato chips and special sauce, this newcomer brings the taste of the sea to ZeeBrgr fans basking in the comfort of their booth at the restaurant’s dine in section. The first to lift the Brgr to new heights, ZeeBrgr introduces lotus root and quail egg on three little “musketeer” buns with the high-end Angus beef, to present its Angus Bites™. Simply a taste unequaled by any other! Last but not least, Chef Michael introduces two mouthwatering desserts, the Popcorn Pain Perdu™, and the Chocolate Brownie Magma™. From a dessert that is so soft and creamy to another that is spongy and saucy. Editor’s Pick: Somebody that I used to know Gotye featuring Kimbra

Gotye featuring Kimbra Somebody that I Used to Know

Now and then I think of when we were together Like when you said you felt so happy you could die Told myself that you were right for me But felt so lonely in your company But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness Like resignation to the end Always the end So when we found that we could not make sense Well you said that we would still be friends But I’ll admit that I was glad it was over

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over Part of me believing it was always something that I’d done But I don’t wanna live that way Reading into every word you say You said that you could let it go And I wouldn’t catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know...

But you didn’t have to cut me off Make out like it never happened And that we were nothing And I don’t even need your love But you treat me like a stranger And that feels so rough No you didn’t have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records And then change your number I guess that I don’t need that though Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

PLAYERS STAND OUT THAT

Currently a striker for Newcastle United, Papiss came from a financially stricken home and would play barefoot on the streets of Dakar in Senegal before he started his european career in FC Metz, France. Soon after, he became a target for recently promoted German Bundesliga outfit SC Freiburg and on the 28th of December 2009 was purchased for €1.6million. During his first full season in the Bundesliga, Cissé notched 24 goals in 34 games, setting new club and league records, the most goals scored by any SC Freiburg player, as well as the most goals scored by an African in a single Bundesliga campaign (22), winning the EFFIFU award for being the most efficient striker during the 2010-2011 season in the process. This attracted attention from Tyneside club Newcastle United and on the 17th of January 2012, his signature was secured for an estimated fee of £10 million, since then Cissé has made his mark on the Barclay’s Premier League, scoring 13 goals in 14 games and out of his collection of stunning goals one stands out as what could arguably be the goal of the season away to Chelsea, a reverse banana strike, on the 94th minute.

Papiss Demba Cissé A true rags to riches story, Manny Pacquiao was second of four siblings raised by a single mother. At the age of 12, Pacquiao sold donuts and also fought around the neighbourhood to make money, earning less than a dollar per fight, which in turn he would give to his mother to buy rice. Eventually, however he was forced to drop out of high school and leave home due to this extreme poverty, briefly living on the streets of Manila at the age of 14 working as a construction worker and boxing for the Philippines national amateur team where he held a record of 60 wins and 4 losses. His first taste of professional boxing came at the age of 16 and since has won 17 boxing titles, including 11 world titles as well as the first World Boxing Council Diamond Championship belt. Currently, he is the only person to win eight different titles in eight different weight divisions and is also rated as the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Internationally recognized, Pacquiao is considered a hero in his native home of the Philippines acting as a politician and congressman for the Philippine democratic party in the district of Sarangani. By the age of 33, Manny has won 31 recognitions, including the Order of Lakandula, one of the highest honors given by the Republic of the Philippines, holding the rank of Champion for Life and is the only Filipino to feature in Time Magazine’s Time 100, an annual list of the most influential people.

PERSONALITIES STAND OUT THAT

Relational Psychology Driving in unfamiliar territory.

A

You and a friend are driving back home after a late night out, you follow directions given to you by your friend but it soon turns out you’re lost alone together in the middle of nowhere. What are you most likely to say? A. “I thought you knew how to get there.” B. “It’s ok. We enjoyed the drive anyway.” C. “I should have paid attention. When we made that left turn, I wanted to ask you about it but didn’t. My fault.”

B

Analysis A: “I thought you knew how to get there.” Not a very forgiving person, you are quick in assigning responsibility to others. Hidden in the accusatory tone is also anger or dissatisfaction that may or may not be related to the incident per se. B: “It’s ok. We enjoyed the drive anyway.” Easy going and understanding in your attitude, you generally consider your partner equal to yourself. The readiness with which you tolerate your partner’s errors indicates a desire to be treated the same way in similar situations.

C

C: “I should have paid attention. When we made the left turn back over there, I wanted to ask you about it but didn’t. My fault.” Self-effacing and self-accusatory, you demonstrate a tendency to bending over backwards to accommodate your partner. The relationship may be a truly sweet one, but possibly hidden in the attitude is also a certain amount of insecurity.

SIGNS STAND OUT THAT

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Your security is where you may be focused the first half of June. Financial planning will be the most important thing going for you this month. Take your time and leave your options open as long as you can before committing. This would be an excellent time to purchase property as well.

ARIES (Mar. 21-April 20) Time to shine Aries! Like the morning sun, you seem to burst onto the scene wherever you go, spreading sunshine. Pluto and Saturn are giving you a big boost this month. Things are changing, but in a good way and not without some common sense and a sound foundation. Any changes you make will be for the best.

CANCER (June 22-July 22) Ball of fire. Could you be any more “ON”? The career arena is popping with achievement. The things you want out of life seem to be handed to you without effort. Even romance is in the spring air for you. I’d say June couldn’t get any better.

LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23) This month bodes so well for your committed relationships. There’s just a ton of activity in this area. You are changing things for the better. Making a new commitment or revitalizing an older one. Either way, it’s a wonderful ride this month.

90 - 91

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19) The communications will be rolling in with lightning speed this month. It may be something of a task just to keep up. Remain calm and eat that elephant one bite at a time. Don’t lose your perspective in any situation. This will help when things get just a bit frantic.

TAURUS (Apr. 21-May 21) So much to do and so little time. The gas tank is running low and the clock is ticking. Are you feeling the pressure? You may feel like crawling away and hibernating for a while. After the 21st the energy level comes back, so don’t push it too hard until then.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22) You could be rolling in clover before June ends. Seems that all the work you’ve been doing is now going to start paying off. The accolades will be rolling in on the career scene. You could wind-up very high profile as a result of your actions. This could also mean more money for you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) Work, work and work. So much to do, so little time, or so it would seem. Time to get organized Scorpio. Listen to those around you for ideas on how to streamline your activities and reap the biggest benefits from your actions. You will feel that you have the energy to go ahead and get the job done right.

PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) You could have such an urge to just go shopping for something nice for that loved one in your life. The good news is that you have the money at this time to do it right. Don’t forget to be good to yourself as well.

GEMINI (May 22-June 21) The last two weeks of June the Dream Machine has been running into overtime. Seems you’ve been scheming and planning for the future. This comes at a time when, since way last summer, events have played an important role in setting up the choices for you now.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 23) Busy, busy. Balance the books. Cover all the bases. Run here, run there. It’s a full schedule, but you’re up to the task. It’s almost like having a private personal energy source this month. Just don’t go over board with trying to do too much. Remember to breathe.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) Romance is in the spring air for you. Also the creative urge is running through your life without restraint. Time to smell the roses and take some measures to enjoy your life. If you open yourself to new experiences this month you could get a big surprise.
