Memories of a Lifetime...
GUST holds unique IAI-Do Martial Arts Demonstration In a collaboration between the Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) and The Embassy of Japan and Japan Foundation, a unique demonstration of the martial art IAI-Do was inaugurated by the Japanese Ambassador to Kuwait Mr. Yasuyoshi Komizo at the university’s grand auditorium on its Mishref campus.
The Ambassador opened the ceremony with a small speech thanking GUST for co-hosting the event indicating its importance and that it is one of many that will be occurring throughout this year to celebrate Kuwait and Japan’s 50th anniversary of successful diplomatic relations. Ambassador Komizo went on to describe the IAI-Do martial art and emphasize that “there is a meaning behind the martial art. It teaches people to compose themselves for any external change” whether it be a soldier on a battlefield or a problem you are facing in your everyday life.
Two skillful individuals in the martial art of IAI-Do started with some individual demonstrations and an explanation of the martial art. IAI-Do explained “believes in the strength of the sword to hold together a society.” The sword is the master of the student. The student is dedicated to his instrument. The demonstration would always start with a salute to the sword and placing it in the belt. After several movements, you realize that the auditorium is silent. So silent, you can hear a pin drop. The art form is calm, silent but with swift, sudden movements and the sword is always placed back in its “saya” - holder. Before any movement, the sword is always centered to the body. The instructors stress on the fact that you shouldn’t use sheer muscle power to move the sword, as that is very limited, but that there is a certain movement which includes the whole body – much like water moves in a water bottle - which would free the energy from the sword making it quicker and more accurate. The instructor gave more than one demonstration of the martial art depicting different movements and techniques.

No Arms, No Legs, No Worries Mixed emotions filled the room as Nick Vujicic was carried onto the stage. Born with no arms and no legs without any medical explanation, Nick Vujicic was welcomed by the GUST to share his story. Nick Vujicic, 28, born in Brisbane, Australia, had struggled with depression and loneliness throughout his childhood. He was bullied and teased about his disability to the point where at the age of 10 he attempted to commit suicide. But Nick decided not to give up; he learned to accept his disability and believed that God has created him for a purpose. At the age of 21, Nick graduated with a double major in accounting and financial planning and is now the President of his own non-profit organization; Life without Limbs, and also has his own motivational speaking company; Attitude is Altitude. Nick’s motivational talks allowed people to discover that a positive approach points the way to a meaningful life. His true faith in God shines through him so bright that people are literally captivated by his presence. Nick concentrated on four principles in life: Principle # 1: You don’t know what you can achieve until you try. Nick achieved things he never knew he could because he simply ‘tried.’ Principle # 2: Face your fears. Nick said, “Courage is you facing your fears and going through these fears even when you are still afraid.” Principle # 3: Obstacles = Opportunity because “every failure is a step closer towards success,” he reassured the audience. Principle # 4: Be thankful. Be thankful for your health, be thankful for your family and friends and be thankful for everything you have because the list of things you supposedly “don’t have” will be endless.

Follow your true passion, self-discipline yourself and be persistent with what you want in life. Aziz Al Mudhaf
To be touted as your country’s next ‘bright young thing’ is certain to put pressure on any rising artist. Still at an early point of his career, but with a sold-out exhibition and a work that sold at auction alongside pieces by Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst already under his belt, it would appear the future is definitely bright for Aziz Al Mudhaf.
STUDENTALK: What are your plans to improve and present your self to the world? Aziz: I’m applying for grad schools later this year in hopes of enrolling into a Masters program in Fine Arts. I predict that the academic environment of an art school will surely improve me in some way, whether technical or conceptual.
STUDENTALK: When did you start drawing?
STUDENTALK: When do you draw?
Aziz: I’ve started drawing when I was a little kid; I used to love drawing cartoon characters at first. It then developed into more detailed drawings, portraiture, and landscapes. There were a lot of on/off periods that finally led me to my current style of painting.
Aziz: I draw whenever I feel the need to express.
STUDENTALK: Who discovered your talent? Aziz: I credit my high school teachers for believing in my talent, and my art professor in University for expanding it and pushing me back into the world of painting. STUDENTALK: Did school support your talent? Aziz: There’s only so much that a government school can do for an artist; unfortunately art classes were treated as electives and not much more.
30-31
STUDENTALK: Is it hard to study and work on your talent? Aziz: Time management can be tricky, but the most important thing is persistence. STUDENTALK: We saw you in the Capstone exhibition drawing in front of people, isn’t that challenging? Aziz: It is, especially since like most artists I prefer to work in solitude and just show people the end product. I wanted to challenge myself in the exhibition by doing something I haven’t done before. STUDENTALK: Does drawing affect your daily life? Aziz: I suppose it does in terms of perception, but I believe this is the case with any artist.
STUDENTALK: Who inspires you as an artist? Aziz: Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali and Jackson Pollock are big influential figures in my development as an artist. The littlest things in life can be the biggest source of inspiration; it all depends on the moment. STUDENTALK: Do you have a specific drawing style? Aziz: I’ve come to develop a more particular style over the past couple of years but I wouldn’t want to restrict myself from developing into something else in the future. STUDENTALK: Do you see drawing as a career? Aziz: A career can be built by drawing but it should never be treated as a job. I would not want to be at a point where I’m expected to turn out a number of paintings in a period of time; it kills the fantasy and beauty of painting and instead turns into a mechanical process. STUDENTALK: What is your advice to those people whe have talent like you? Aziz: To follow their true passion, self-discipline themselves and be persistent with what they want in life. We say, buy his work now while it is still affordable!

Mutual Funds An investment vehicle which is comprised of a pool of funds collected from many investors for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market securities and similar assets. Mutual funds are operated by money managers who invest the fund’s capital and attempt to produce capital gains and income for the fund’s investors. A mutual fund’s portfolio is structured and maintained to match the investment objectives stated in its prospectus. One of the main advantages of a mutual fund is that it gives small investors access to a well-diversified portfolio of equities, bonds and other securities, which would be quite difficult (if not impossible) to create with a small amount of capital. Each shareholder participates proportionally in the gain or loss of the fund. Mutual fund units, or shares, are issued and can typically be purchased or redeemed as needed at the current net asset value per share (NAVPS). Related Definitions
• Accumulation Plan: An investment strategy whereby a fixed dollar amount is invested on a regular basis. This often includes the reinvestment of dividends or distributions.
• Aggressive Growth Fund: A mutual fund that typically buys shares in small or speculative growth companies to achieve maximum capital appreciation. Growth funds offer higher growth potential but usually at a higher risk. • All Weather Fund: A fund that performs well in all economical conditions. • Asset Allocation Fund: These funds split investments between stocks, bonds, and money market instruments or cash. The manager will switch the percentages of holdings in each asset category according to the performance of that group. • Back-End Load: A fee (sales charge or load) that investors pay when selling mutual fund shares within a specified number of years, which usually ranges between five to ten years. The fee amounts to a percentage of the value of the share being sold. The fee percentage is highest in the first year and decreases yearly until the specified holding period ends, at which time it drops to zero. The back-end load is a type of sales charge that is used with mutual funds that have share classes, which in this case are identified as Class B shares. Also known as a “contingent deferred sales charge or load.” Follow us on

• Balanced Fund: A fund that combines a stock component, a bond component and, sometimes, a money market component, in a single portfolio. Generally, these hybrid funds stick to a relatively fixed mix of stocks and bonds that reflects either a moderate (higher equity component) or conservative (higher fixed-income component) orientation. • Class A Shares: Class of shares for which investors are charged a Front-end Load. This charge may decline as the investment amount increases. • Closed-end Fund: A publicly traded investment company that raises a fixed amount of capital through an initial public offering (IPO). The fund is then structured, listed and traded like a stock on a stock exchange. The unit price of a closed-end fund fluctuates according to market forces (supply and demand) as well as changing values of the securities in the fund’s holdings. • Crossover Fund: A mutual fund that invests in both public and private equity. These funds are high yield/high growth funds. • Dual Purpose Fund: A closed-end fund offering two classes of stock in approximately equal amounts. One class (income shares) is entitled to all the income from the fund’s portfolio (i.e., dividends from investments). The second class (capital shares) is entitled to all of the capital appreciation from the fund’s holdings. At the time a dual purpose fund is established, a date is set on which the fund will be liquidated. • Final Prospectus: The legal document that states the price of a newly issued security, delivery date and underwriting spread, as well as other material information. It must be given to every investor who purchases a new issue of registered securities. A key difference between a final prospectus and a preliminary prospectus is that the first contains the securities’ prices. Loads are added to the net asset value of shares when the offering price is calculated. • Focused Fund: Funds that contain a large holding of a small amount of stocks. • Front-End Load: A commission or sales fee charged at the time of the initial purchase for an investment, usually mutual funds and insurance policies. It is deducted from the investment amount and thus, lowers the size of the investment. For mutual funds, the use of loads is suggested to prevent frequent trading of the fund, which can hurt a fund if it has to hold large cash reserves to meet payouts. The front-end load is a type of sales charge that is used with mutual funds that have Class A shares. • Fund Manager: A highly trained investment professional with a vast amount of investment experience with good performance and exceptional formal education. The fund manager’s main responsibilities include investing the assets of a mutual, pension, trust, or hedge fund, implementing investment strategy and managing the day-to-day portfolio trades. • Fund of Funds: A private equity fund that, instead of being used to make direct investments in companies, is distributed among a number of other private equity fund managers, who in turn invest the capital directly. Funds of funds often give individual limited partners access to funds from which they would otherwise be excluded. Also, by spreading the capital more widely, the risk to limited partners is reduced.

MANDARINA DUCK. THE COMPANY In 1977, MANDARINA DUCK brand was created by childhood friends Paolo Trento and Piero Mannato. They decided to branch into leatherwear taking their inspiration from a brightly-plumed oriental duck that symbolises happiness and loyalty. MANDARINA DUCK broke with all the conventions of the day in the field of leather goods; it focused on colour and new materials in a market monopolised by traditional products and monochromatic colour schemes. Since then, it has never stopped evolving and has kept developing innovative, original and aesthetic solutions. As a result of this creative and ideological project, the brand quickly started accumulating successes. After 30 years of such a brilliant start, Mandarina Duck continues to be original and independent, but also modern, coming up with new products, distribution choices and communication tactics year after year.

whether it is makeup or hair. We see this change in our daily lives in Kuwait and this is a good thing for my team and me because we are westerners and can encourage them to try different things.
What brought you to Kuwait and how long have you lived here?
Where do you get your products from?
My husband; he is from Kuwait and we came to live here and build our future. I have been in Kuwait for three years.
Why did u decide on opening a salon?
I am a beautician, I love to work and I worked in Russia most of my life.
What are your future plans?
How long has the salon been open?
A little secret about Tatiana
The salon has been opened for three years but the official opening was one year ago.
What are the services you offer?
Hair colouring and styling, Moroccan bath, tanning booth, manicure/pedicure, massage, and skin care but what is most important is that we are a high-quality salon offering services at reasonable prices.
What distinguishes your salon from others?
The team members are all professionals. For example, a body massage is given by a Chinese professional; Indian sheera is done by a skilled Indian woman; and the hair dresser is from Moscow who is a graduate from London.
Are you restricted to the traditional hair and makeup styles of Kuwait and the Arab world or do you find it easy to give out your opinion and encourage new ideas and styles? Travelling and the media has helped change the style of Kuwaitis. They are exposed to different western styles 50-51
For the hair treatment and coloring we use the French brand L’oreal, for facials we use the German brand Johnssen, for foot care we have a German medical machine called Podologist for those who have feet problems or suffer from diabetes. To grow and to never stop growing.
Tatiana has a passion for working with hands and feet. Her schedule is by appointment only, giving you the privacy that you need and she takes the time she needs. Tatiana uses a technique which only cuts dead skin using special tools and uses podometry apparatus for the feet to soften the skin and get rid of dryness. Tatiana’s artistic flair really flourishes when it comes to nails, offering a variety of creative options with many designs using flowers, butterflies, diamonds and glitter! just sit back in the massaging chair and let Tatiana do her magic... You wont be disappointed! For more information call: 22520976

MODERN MINIMAL CLASSICS For this Spring/Summer 2011 collection and my final show for LACOSTE, I wanted to express the very essence of the brand’, Creative Director Christophe Lemaire says. ‘Sporty and chic. Easy and playful. Clean and clear. In short, modern minimal classics’. Inspired by the geometrical patterns of Op Art, the bold lines of Bauhaus and specifically the early modernist Villa Noailles designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens, this collection is decidedly architectural and graphic. The show starts in black and shades of white with contrasting textures: chalk on cotton, optical on crispy nylon and off-white on ultra suede. Lemaire proposes fresh volumes for women, amplifying either the tops or bottoms with such pieces as kimono sleeve blouses with deep V-necks or tunics knitted in an oversized zoom-in pique pattern. ‘

The ‘Military/Biker’ collection is less about contemporary influences and more about looking back at historical designs and traditional military garb from different eras. Key pieces from this collection such as aviator jackets and military inspired coats contrasted with layered lace skirts, georgette dresses contrasted with sturdy tweed blazers & coats with fur detailing contrasted with biker jackets, give the line an edgy yet feminine look. Flannel, double-faced wool, lightweight canvas, insignia & skin prints are the key details and fabrics for the collection while the colour palette is predominantly khaki, accentuated with a flash of cardinal red. Shades of olive green are mixed with earthen browns whereas black and deep blue palettes enhance the dark mood with a hint of antique gold mixed subtly with gunmetal grey and air-force blue.

Ted Baker Spring Summer 2011 Womenswear A kaleidoscope of colour, a wealth of rich prints and a mix of luxurious fabrics abound in our womenswear collection for Spring Summer 2011. Soft, draped silhouettes in lightweight translucent fabrics and intricate, abstract prints create feminine appeal while bold digital graphics produce an explosion of colour on maxi dresses, jumpsuits and playsuits. Colourwise, exotic bright shades are tempered with soft candy pastels on this season’s signature prints – the beautiful rose, delicate dragonfly and whimsical hummingbird – which appear on sweeping maxis, separates and accessories. Conversely, nude hues and monochrome prints sit alongside exquisite mesh panelling and supple leather trims to deliver a unique fusion of hard and soft. Contrasts in luxurious fabrics, including silk panelling on knitwear and soft leathers with jersey, create a tactile feel and this, combined with rose gold hardware and studding on clothing and accessories, adds further texture that’s typically Ted. Defined by extra detailing and expensive fabrics, the Langley Court collection creates a new level of glamour and sophistication. Sequin and jewel embellishments, lace detailing and hand pleating mix with delicate feather and washed rose prints to create a stylish colour palette. So take it from Ted, the mark of a true model citizen this Spring/Summer is to be sophisticated in your style and to be satisfied with nothing less than the best. Martin Luther King, Jr. In your opinion how do people judge others in Kuwait? Are people prejudice against certain things? (Ex. Gender, family background, income level, ethic affiliation) -I think there are certain people who judge others according to skin color, family name, job positions or even our exterior looks !!!
-A lot of people in Kuwait judge others by their nationality and looks. Although it has decreased substantially there are still judgments based on those. Lindsay Lohan Charged With Stealing Necklace
Bono Causes Stir In S. Africa Over ‘Shoot The Farmer’ Song
Irish pop singer Bono caused a stir in South Africa after expressing support for the singing of an anti-apartheid struggle song that includes the lyrics “shoot the farmer”.
Troubled US starlet Lindsay Lohan pleaded not guilty to stealing a 2,500 dollar necklace from a Los Angeles jewellery store, in her latest brush with the law. The actress, who is on probation for a 2007 drink driving offence and recently checked out of drug rehab, could face up to three years in jail if convicted on the grand theft charge. Dressed in a tight-fitting short white dress with sunglasses and a pony-tail, the 24-year-old said nothing as she arrived 20 minutes early at the court near Los Angeles airport, to be mobbed by a huge media scrum. The judge granted her release on 40,000 dollars bail, but warned her she would be detained without bail if she breached her probation terms again.
70-71
The song has been at the centre of a politically charged controversy in South Africa, where the firebrand leader of the ruling party’s youth league is locked in a legal battle with a white lobby group over whether the song should be banned as hate speech. The U2 frontman, who is in Johannesburg ahead of a Sunday night concert for the band’s 360 Degrees Tour, said in an interview with South Africa’s Sunday Times that struggle music like the “shoot the farmer” song has a place. “I was a kid and I’d sing songs I remember my uncles singing... rebel songs about the early days of the Irish Republican Army,” he said, proceeding to sing a song whose lyrics spoke of carrying guns and readying them for action.
Brother Jailed For Attack On ‘Harry Potter’ Star
Bonham Carter Predicts Oscars Outfit ‘Catastrophe’
Quirky British actress Helena Bonham Carter predicted Monday that her outfit for the Oscars this month “will probably be a catastrophe”, but vowed to at least wear shoes of the same color. The actress, known for her exuberant clothes and hair, and wearing one red shoe and one green at the recent Golden Globes awards show, said her partner Tim Burton knew how difficult it is to guess what she was going to wear.
The brother of a “Harry Potter” film actress was jailed for six months Friday for assaulting her because her boyfriend was not Muslim. Afshan Azad, 21, who played Potter’s classmate Padma Patil in the smash hit films, was subjected to a “prolonged and nasty” beating over her Hindu boyfriend, Manchester Crown Court in northwest England heard. Her brother Ashraf, 28, overheard her talking on the phone to her boyfriend and subjected to her a lengthy ordeal before her family in which she feared for her life. The actress called for leniency and begged the judge not to jail her brother. However, Roger Thomas sent Ashraf Azad to prison for six months after he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Oprah Launches Her “Own” Cable Channel
Talk show diva and cultural kingmaker Oprah Winfrey expands her media empire Saturday with the high-stakes launch of her OWN cable network. While Winfrey’s comfy couches have launched scores of careers, from Dr. Phil to the inventors of her ‘favorite things’, it’s unclear if her magic touch can carry an entire network. “Oprah has a very powerful brand name, but it’s really difficult to get people to change their viewing habits and find a new channel,” said Derek Baine, an analyst for industry consultant SNL Kagan.”Plus, the fact that she’ll still be on her syndicated show will probably be confusing to some people.”Discovery Networks is reportedly sinking 189 million dollars into the joint venture, which replaces Discovery Health and will reach nearly 80 million homes. The programming is intended to “inspire viewers and give them hope,” Oprah has often said, and the network is being “built on great intentions.” However, she acknowledged in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal that it may take time to translate the success of a show she’d done 140 times a year into a network which airs 24 hours a day. The network has also developed: a reality show where contestants compete for their own television show; another where children kidnap their workaholic parents; two cooking shows, a show where families get rid of their clutter and get organized; a talk show about sex; and a series which profiles top names like Diane Sawyer, Jay-Z, Maya Angelou, and Condoleezza Rice.

Run!
Kuwait Charity Run for Bayt Abdullah
Thinking of joining the run or perhaps you’ve already entered? Still got questions to ask? Who else could be better to give us the advice we need than Marie Molinie, fitness guru and part of the organizing team. Q: How often, how far and how fast should I be running during the week to prepare for the Kuwait Charity Run? A: You should be running comfortably 3 times a week by now for both 21km and 10km. It’s not about speed, it’s about the time spent on your legs and total distance covered that week. Basically, if you have prepared for the 21km, you should be running two of the sessions for 1hour 10 to 1hour 15 and still feel fresh at the end of it, and one session longer for 1hour 30 to 1hour 40 but have a bit more pace in that session and feel happy to end it. Your total mileage for the week should add up to the distance on the day. If you have prepared for the 10km same principals apply; just reduce the running times to 45/50mins twice a week and 1hour 10 to 1hour 20 maximum once a week
Q: What should I eat during the Run? A: Same applies here; try out a few things during your runs of the couple weeks before the event, such as energy bars, bananas, dry fruits, biscuits such as a fig roll or date roll. Take a bite every twenty minutes. Just as importantly practice drinking water from a plastic cups or sports bottle whilst still running. Q: Should I run in new shoes? A: If you are planning to race regularly, it is recommended to have a pair of training shoes and a pair of racing shoes, these are often lighter in weight. If you must change your shoes do so a month before the event no later.
Q: Would doing any training other than running help Q: What sort of time should I set for myself as a goal me prepare? for the Run? A: There is an excellent training method called crosstraining. Sports such as cycling, spinning and swimming recruit the same muscles as those used for running but in the different ways, giving the athlete the strength and stamina required to last longer and push further on the day. When conducted sensibly, cross-training helps prevent injuries. Circuit training, functional training, and Pilates would also help core muscles and stability. Don’t forget to stretch regularly; yoga can be of good use, as is massage. Q: What should I eat before the Run? A: You shouldn’t change your routines and habits on the day. Whatever has worked for you so far is what you stick to. Eat no less than one hour before the run any acidic or fibrous foods such as apples, energy bars, porridge, dried fruits, and nuts mixed in yoghurt are often favored. If you haven’t found what works for you, try out different things during the two weeks leading up to the event.
72-73
A: If it is your first race, forget your watch and enjoy every second of your run. If not aim to better your personal best. Q: I’m interested in running with you on the 19th, I’m moderately fit but I haven’t done any training. Is it too late for me to start? A: It’s never too late, the children of Bayt Abdullah will appreciate every step you will take and the effort you will make to support their cause. See you on the start line on March 19th! The Kuwait Charity Run for Bayt Abdullah is generously sponsored by Gulf Bank, and co-sponsored by Gulf Cable and Alargan. You can find out more at kuwaitcharityrun.com

THE 3 TRIATHLON CLUB PARTICIPATES IN ABU DHABI FOR THE 2ND CONSECUTIVE YEAR
ABU DHABI INTERNATIONAL TRIATHLON The 3 triathlon club is a training program offered to individuals seeking a more active and challenging lifestyle. Since its establishment in January 2010 The 3 triathlon club, an extension of Provision Sports Management, has been quite active in the triathlon world from organizing local events to competing in regional and international races. And today we can proudly say that we have trained more than 60 members, 15 of which will be competing in Abu Dhabi international triathlon on March 12th 2011. Abu Dhabi international triathlon has opened its doors to athletes from all over the world. This year’s event will be raced across three lengths. Professionals will contest a 3km swim, a 200km cycle and a 20km closing run. The shorter version, at half the length, has a 1.5kms swim, a 100km cycle and a 10km run, with both courses eligible for a share of the US$250,000 prize purse. Also a first for this year’s edition, ADTA has also launched a unique ‘sprint’ distance as an entry platform for aspiring athletes. Comprising a 750m swim, 50km bike and 5km run, the new ‘sprint’ course is aimed at boosting uptake from novice racers across the Arabian Gulf and can be raced as an individual or as a team. Places are charged at US$180 and US$123 for the long and short distances, respectively. The team relay short course entry fee stands at US$272, and the sprint fee will be US$70 for individuals, US$112 for a team. Best of luck to all 3 club members representing Kuwait in Abu Dhabi. Stay tuned for after race coverage in the next issue of STUDENTALK. In the mean time you can get to know our members by flipping to the next page:

Name: Sara Al.Haji Age: 31 Nationality: Kuwaiti Rides: Trek 1.1 road bike Distance: Sprint Triathlon History: this will be my first triathlon, Sprint distance therefore 750m swim, 50Km Bike and 5K Run
Triathlon Preparations: include attending training regularly, which is twice a day. This includes either a swim or run in the morning; and cycling, running at night. I give myself one day off for my muscles to recover. My eating habits have also changed as I choose foods that can enhance my performance and not slow me down, so more protein and enriched B vitamin foods for more energy, and less fattening foods.
Name: Aysha Al Nafisi Age: 22 Nationality: Kuwaiti Rides: Trek Madone 4.7 Distance: Sprint Triathlon History: The 3 club 2010 1) Flying Start V.02 Triathlon - Sprint distance - Kuwait 2) Eleven Global Mimzar park - Sprint distance - Dubai
Triathlon Preparations: Due to the fact that I study abroad, I train solo most of the time. And as you know not having a group to train with might be hard but what kept me encouraged to stay on track or lets say maintain my endurance is participating in events such as, the Standard Charter marathon in Dubai, military boot camp running sessions, cycling using the home trainer, and swimming in the universities pool after classes. When I’m back home in Kuwait I can't help, but go straight to the 3club to join them with their training for encouragement and a mental boost :)
Rides: Trek 2.1 road bike
Name: Mohammad Al. Sanea Age: 29 Nationality: Kuwaiti Distance: Sprint Triathlon History: Abu Dhabi international triathlon will be my first inshalla.
Triathlon Preparations: Other than my training sessions with the "3Club" on cycling, swimming and running, I am currently on a strict diet (as strict as it can get in here) to lose weight before the race. Yeah and some "mental" training too!
Rides: Trek 2.1 road bike
Name: Wadha Alrushaid Albader Age: 24 Nationality: Kuwaiti Distance: Sprint Triathlon History: Sprint distance Triathlon, April 2010 Olympic distance Triathlon, October 2010
Triathlon Preparations: I am constantly training and wouldn't have it any other way! On a normal day, I am usually up at 4am for either a slow run of up to 6km or a swim session before work. The swims tend to be varied, comprising of breathing and proper stroke technique, speed drills, or long distance swims. Training in the evening can be anything from intense brick sessions (run-bike-run), to long, slow fat-burning runs, to core-strengthening exercises, to working up a sauna on the home-trainer. Friday mornings are known for being pretty brutal but I've learned to love the pain. As the Abu Dhabi Triathlon is getting closer, both nerves and excitement are kicking in, but my instinct tells me that it will be fine after all this hard work! Perfect practice makes perfect. 74-75
Rides: Speed Concept 9
Name: Anwar Jawhar Age: 25 Nationality: Kuwaiti Distance: Short Triathlon History: 1) Flying Start Triathlon - Sprint Distance - Kuwait. 2) Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific
Triathlon Preparations: Five times a week, twice a day training sessions including swimming, cycling, running, core strength training. Various combinations of "duathlon" (cycle/run) training sessions. Most importantly for me is mental training. The mind needs to be focused throughout a long Ironman race for example, and key to not breaking down during any part of the race is having a solid mindset. Training the mind is key.
Rides: Argon 18
Name: Emmanuel Galbourdin Age: 42 Nationality: French Distance: Short Triathlon History: Began in 1995, member to a club since 1999, I ran approximately 10 triathlons a year or approximately 120 races any distances.
Triathlon Preparations: I try to train twice a week for the swimming, three times running and two times cycling, just the minimum cause when you have a job and also a family, training correctly is a full time job!

I've been training twice a day at 5 A.M and at 6:00 P.M in the evening for the triathlon at The 3 club which is the first triathlon club in Kuwait. We receive a monthly training plan. Training is not less than two hours including the stretching. No mercy on that. The biggest success factor with training plans is to ensure they fit with your lifestyle and time availability. Sticking to a training plan day in and day out ensures your success, whereas days missed can set you back weeks in terms of goals and capability.

2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The Mercedes C-Class has had mixed levels of success over the last several years based on the variant. The 2011 Mercedes C-Class collection is opening to rave reviews. Blending power and refinement with impressive safety features, the C-Class carries on the Benz tradition of excellence. Its four new models offer something for everyone. Reviewed here are the C63 AMG sports car, the C300 luxury sedan, and two sport sedans – the manual C300 and the automatic C350.
The inside of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class features stunning, hand-stitched leather with laurel wood trim tastefully surrounding the well-designed and accessible controls. Dualzone climate control allows for both driver and passenger to select their own comfort level and there are even vents for the rear seat passengers.
A range of six vehicles, the Mercedes C-Class has had mixed levels of success over the last several years based on the variant. The C230 Kompressor Sports Coupe, designed to be a more “entrylevel variant has failed miserably in sales, while the top of the line C32 AMG trim does spectacularly well in sales and in all auto reviews that take it on.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel is multifunction allowing the driver to adjust more than 50 settings in the car including the lighting, stereo system, cruise control, phone and other vehicle settings with the touch of a button.
Performance
Engine size for the 2011 C-Class is expected to be little changed from its 2010 models which varied wildly from the 1.8-liter supercharged DOHC I-4 at 189 horsepower to the legendary AMG which had a 3.2-liter supercharged V-6 that crank out 349 horsepower. The precise handling and performance both on the streets and on the highways and back mountain roads is legendary for the C-Class thanks to the multilink rear suspension and 3-link front suspension. Rumors of a hybrid for 2011 are substantial and, if proven true, probably a good move for Mercedes-Benz in the C-Class to attract the more environmental-conscious drivers out there who want a little more out of their car than the Toyota Prius has to offer. 76-77
Safety & Specifications
Safety features for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class will not diminish from their hard-earned reputation in 2011. The traction and stability control, brake assist with antilock disc brakes, ESP collision avoidance system, eight airbags and specialized seatbelt with pre-tensioning retractors are all standard features you can expect to find to help keep you and your family safe and also keep your car insurance rates lower (although online car insurance may further lower rates). STUDENTALK met Zouheir Beidoun, 24, who studies Communication at AUK & Haifaa Al-Dowaisan, 22, who studies Public Relations at GUST to test drive the Mercedes C-Class 2011, so we asked them some questions to learn more about the car from their experience:

I adore the color black and Mercedes is one of my dream cars.
Would you please give the car a rating (1 being the highest and 5 the lowest) and explain why? Between 3.5 and 4. It needs extra features.
If there is anything you didn’t like about the car, what was it? It’s not sport car.
How was the performance of the car- the comfort, handling, visibility? Amazing because it was very smooth and comfortable.
What was your favourite feature of the car? Outside, because it stands out more.
Would you please give the car a rating (1 being the highest and 5 the lowest) and explain why? 4 ½ because it looks very nice and is very comfortable
If there is anything you didn’t like about the car, what was it? The chairs don’t go back as far as I expected and the seating in the back is small.
Haifaa Al-Dowaisan When you first saw the Mercedes C-Class, what did you think? Amazing

Excitement has no Limits: The MINI Countryman. The MINI has always been known for it’s traditional look, funky designs and maneuverability. Many potential customers though, were looking for bigger vehicles for more practicality and this is where the all new MINI Countryman has come in. The MINI Countryman has proven to be a fun and exciting experience, from cruising the streets to taking it off-road. Yes, I did say off-road as this new concept created by MINI has taken the brand to a whole new dimension where it can actually step big stones and prevent being bogged down into the sand. Now with four doors, the MINI Countryman has delivered what many customers have been wishing for, a bigger MINI that can house a family and move luggage with convenience. Many would think that it would be still small but I was proven otherwise as I felt I was sitting in a comfy sedan with a chauffeur driving me around. The MINI Countryman still embraces the design of the brand in superior style and quality, even though it houses larger body dimensions, greater ground clearance and four doors at the side keeping the MINI-esque traditional design features we’re all so used to seeing. At the same time the MINI Countryman re-interprets the well known icons of a MINI such as the roofline, the hexagon radiator grille, the large headlights integrated in the engine lid, the voluminous wheel arches and the upright rear light clusters in new style and class. Proceeding from that design language so typical of MINI, the MINI Countryman authentically visualises the particular features of this very special car. Positioned almost upright, the front end bears out strong presence and serves to optimise 78-79
pedestrian safety. The extra space within the car, in turn, is emphasised by extra-large windows, the introduction of four doors, and the individual shape of the roof. The particularly wide frame around the lower part of the body and the powerfully flared wheel arches highlight the robust character of the car and its all-wheel drive. With that typical MINI style now being conveyed to a new segment in absolute clarity and precision, the MINI Countryman stands out from the start as a brand-new, highly innovative model but is nevertheless clearly identifiable from the very beginning as a genuine MINI. The MINI Countryman boasts innovative design and function elements throughout. The slightly elevated seating position guarantees comfortable and pleasant access to the car, optimises the driver’s all-round view, and underlines the powerful character of this new model. The Central Display and air vents are surrounded by coloured rings. The MINI Center Rail quite unique the world over, extending from front to rear instead of a conventional centre console, opens up new, individual options for integrating all kinds of storage boxes, cupholders, external audio devices, mobile telephones and other comfort features. Flexibly positioned clip-in elements enable the driver and passengers to subdivide the storage boxes individually as required, keeping travel utensils within easy reach, wherever they are required. At the same time the Center Rail forms an unconventional, visual and functional connection between the front seats and the rear passenger compartment. The MINI Countryman comes as standard with four seats,
while a three-seat bench is available as a no-cost option. The interior offers superior comfort also on long distances, with generous legroom, headroom and shoulder freedom. The rear seats move fore-and-aft either individually or in a split, the backrests may be tilted for angle either individually increasing capacity in the luggage compartment from 350 to over three times to 1,170 litres (12.2–41.0 cu ft). With the full know-how of the BMW Group, the power range extends from 66 kW/90 hp in the MINI One D Countryman all the way to 135 kW/184 hp in the MINI Cooper S Countryman. The 1.6-litre fourcylinder petrol engine in the top model comes for the first time not only with a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection, but also with fully variable valve management offering by far the best balance of engine power and fuel consumption in its class. The MINI Cooper S Countryman is available with permanent MINI ALL4 all-wheel drive. Based on an electrohydraulically operating centre differential, this sophisticated system spreads out drive power infinitely between the front and rear axle. Together with greater ground clearance, all-wheel drive offers ideal conditions for enjoying that driving pleasure so typical of MINI also beyond the beaten track. At the same time MINI ALL4 significantly enhances the car’s dynamic potential and ensures an even more superior driving experience particularly in critical situations. As many of us are option lovers, the MINI Countryman embraced our passion with the unique options including the Ambient Illumination with the optional Lights Package which sets a particular highlight within the interior. Providing an indirect lighting effect, Ambient Illumination creates special colour highlights throughout the entire door panel in night design, thus giving the interior a truly unique atmosphere. As the fourth model within the range and the first premium car of its kind, the MINI Countryman is a pioneer in many respects. Owners of the MINI Brand included celebrities Enzo Ferrari, Peter Sellers, Ringo Starr and John Lennon, making this car a definite popular collector’s item with the love for exciting experiences. Giving customers the option for designing their own MINI Countryman, this vehicle is a definite must have for all those fun loving drivers out there. www.studentalk-online.com

Yahoo! Supports Safer Internet Day with its Global Commitment to Creating Safer Online Experiences for Youth GoNabit Group-Buying Website Set to Pioneer e-Commerce in Kuwait Save and Discover Kuwait’s Leading Group Buying Website
GoNabit.com, the Middle East’s first group-buying website, is continuing to pioneer e-commerce across the region after the successful completion of the beta-phase of its Kuwait City site. Having brought one of the Web’s fastest growing retail phenomena to the country in October 2010, GoNabit has seen growing interest in the group buying model in Kuwait from both consumers and merchants.
Yahoo! Inc. today announced that it is launching Yahoo! Safely worldwide, demonstrating its longtime commitment to fostering safer online experiences. Through Yahoo! Safely (http://safely.yahoo.com), users across 26 countries and 14 languages can now access information and advice on making smart choices online. This global resource aims to inform parents, educators, and young people in their own languages about important topics, such as managing digital reputations, avoiding cyber-bullying, and learning how to minimize risks on mobile devices. In the Middle East, Yahoo! Safely is represented by a localized online safety resource called Yahoo! Safety Oasis (http://esafe.yahoo.com/), which was developed by the Yahoo! Maktoob team. Yahoo! Safety Oasis educates Arabic speaking children about how to properly surf the net and protect their personal privacy through a series of fun, interactive edu-tainment courses offered through a number of Yahoo! Maktoob channels such as Kids, Games, and Family links. “We are very excited to be supporting Safer Internet Day, and playing a role in spotlighting this day in the Middle East. While online traffic is increasing across the region, awareness of online safety issues is relatively low. According to research we conducted, an overwhelming majority of respondents said they are interested in learning more about internet safety for kids. This makes our program very relevant and we feel that it will provide a valuable resource to educate youngsters on digital literacy as early as possible,” said Andy Abbar, head of product marketing for Yahoo! Maktoob.
As the original daily deal website in the Middle East and the first group-buying company in the world to offer its web content in Arabic, GoNabit has brought a tried, tested and loved online shopping experience to Kuwait consumers. GoNabit operates successful daily deal sites in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Beirut and a combined site for Sharjah as Al Khaimah, and is now transitioning from its beta testing phase in Kuwait City as well as Amman, Jordan.

Music The Kuwait Rock and Metal Scene - Dead or Alive? From kuwait-music.com
When I read an article a couple of weeks back on our Kuwait Music Facebook page about the metal scene, I could recall the few publications I read earlier about the same subject, and my super powerful memory didn’t fail me, I had seen it somewhere before. It was on that classic but unforgotten website, Q8metal.net. Some sources that have spoken about it before are:
Yousef, a talented local musician talks about it “Back in 2006 and 2007, there was a thriving metal scene here in Kuwait. There were around 6 live concerts full of local metal and rock bands playing covers, and they were usually sold out, and it was pretty awesome indeed. But, it’s all dead and gone now.” A very interesting observation by Yousef, that brings back to life a very important subject:
Kuwait & Rock music; Two words that never
seem to be in harmony. He shares his personal experiences and the obstacles he faced, while trying to get into the ‘closed’ community of the ‘local bands’ activities’.
Kuwait Times Article back in 2008 Another rare article that addresses this topic was published in Kuwait times dated 28 Nov 2008. And although I will not do justice to the article by simply quoting one of the paragraphs in it, but I like it because it shows how musicians need fans. “Saleh noted that 10 years ago, the situation was different when compared to present times and that the fan base is expanding. He recalls a gig at the British Embassy and estimates the number to be around 300 although promotion for this kind of music is non-existent.” It really helps you to gain some perspective about how things are changing slowly but dramatically while we are living our lives and not aware of wave of change. 90-91
Me screaming out loud I am not sure if I can agree with the part that the scene is dead now. For me I believe that you get what you think and dream about. Whoever thought that the scene was not dead, continued believing and dreaming and progressing, and whoever thought it was dead,.. well they just simply disappeared.
Who takes the blame?
Any metal and rock bands will probably not agree with what I’m saying considering all the challenges that they go through , but I have to say this: If the scene is dead – don’t you/we have any part in this? Isn’t it me, you, him and her who did not support this ‘scene’ that we’re talking about? What is a scene anyways? Isn’t it a community of people that create a melting pot of similar activities? Who are the people? Whether we are the musicians or the fans, why didn’t we listen to the songs produced, why didn’t we give a call, drop a line with a word of encouragement, and as a band why didn’t we practice regularly?
So what can we do? -Can we have once-a-month focus groups? To recharge each other’s determination and stay focused? -Could we responsibly organize renting a hall and hold small gatherings to watch the bands’ live performances? -Could we have established a humble fund to support bands somehow? -Could we have told one more friend every day about a band or about one song they composed? Yes we can. And it’s already happening. We’re not looking for someone to blame. I don’t have a conclusion for this subject. It’s not my subject, each one of us has a say in it. Each one of us, who contributes to the scene. Never stop yourself from dreaming about this picture. A place maybe here that is ‘green’ where discretion prevails and metal and rock music will finally be stripped of its ‘Evil’ status here.
Feature Band: EarSplit A band that’s been around the rock and metal scene in Kuwait for well over a decade now, know all about the challenges faced with being a metal band in Kuwait.
Band Profile: Having formed in 1998 in Kuwait by Yaz and Kenny and being disbanded with Yaz’s departure after a couple of years and some fine gigs and original compositions, the band regrouped in 2005 with Kenny wanting to take the band further to where it belonged. Earsplit regrouped with core members, Ash, Sid and Rj and the band went underway again and auditioned for bass and keyboard players. That’s where Jack and Solo came into the picture. Jack and solo contributed largely in the transformation of the earlier versions of the songs. Earsplit, over the years had seen many dropouts but stuck to what they believe in and kept on going till finally they got a lineup that seemed to have clicked with crooner, Ryan (After Sid’s departure). However that too didn’t last long and the band recruited Cleatus as their front man who has performed a few gigs with the band and indicted a new feel to the chemistry. Earsplit are now in the recording phase and their long overdue debut album is anticipated to be out sometime soon. The band is quite optimistic and excited about this and is determined to see it through against all odds. That’s what Earsplit has been all about and is, Cleatus – Lead vocals/Rhythm Guitars Kenny – Rhythm/Lead Guitars/Songwriter Ash – Lead/Rhythm Guitars Jack – Bass Guitars/Backing Vocals RJ – Drums/Percussions Solo – Keyboards/Synths/Backing Vocals http://www.facebook.com/pages/EarSplit/ http://www.earsplit.co.uk/
