Dear Students, By the time you read this letter, we will already be in 2015. However, sitting on my desk right now, I am still wrapping up 2014 and putting it in perspective while planning my resolutions for the year ahead. It has become a habit of mine to use this time to reflect by grabbing a blank sheet of paper, drawing a vertical line down the middle, and putting lowlights on one side and highlights on the other. With every lowlight I jot down, I immediately balance it with a highlight. Soon, and it never fails, I run out of lowlights yet the highlight list keeps on growing, right through until it reaches the very end of the page. And that is when I feel truly, as human beings, we never fully appreciate our blessings. For regardless how much is bestowed on us, our minds keep circling around that which we did not accomplish, that which has hurt us, disappointed us, or caused us sorrow or pain!! All the laughter, joys and shared moments seem to be fleeting as if they don’t carry the same weight. We often have to refer back to pictures to be reminded of the happy times!! Maybe it is human nature or maybe it is just a trait. Whatever may be, we are in a constant state of evolution and capable of changing any aspect of our lives if we really want to. So for 2015, let us collectively try to change that one thing in us. Let us shift our focus, celebrate our joys and make those moments last.

Yousef Al-Fares

Swimming towards his goals and ambitions Yousef Al Fares is a professional Kuwaiti swimmer who has been able to overcome a lot of challenges in his life in order to reach the point that he is at today. He has always found a way to fight through any obstacle in order to reach his goals, including an rare early illness. Now, he has been able to compete in many different races around the world and is now preparing for his next major race in March, which will be located in Abu Dhabi. STUDENTALK was able to catch up with Yousef in order to get an inside look into his life, his preparation techniques, and of course, his love for swimming. What was the reason behind your passion for swimming and how did it all start? Swimming is a healthy and a very safe sport. The feeling underwater is a bit addictive with the color blue everywhere and the sound of bubbles. You can hear nothing but your thoughts. To obtain the perfect balance in life, you will find that swimming is your biggest supporter as a student, an employee or a businessman. I started swimming at the age of 7 when my elder brother took me to AlYarmouk club in 1995. After my brother took the big step, I was motivated to continue the journey for 15 years.

Who were your biggest supporters and motivates you the most? What motivates me the most is the look in my family’s’ eyes while they are watching me compete. Also, my thoughts after each race keep me motivated to continue improving and working harder next time because there is always going to be room for improvement. What were your most memorable races? Why? I am still able to remember the race in Lebanon in 2002 and another race in KSA in 2004.The reason that I can still remember these races is because I lost them and losing a race or a meet will teach us more valuable lessons than when we are able to win them. How do you prepare for a major race? Preparing for a race is just like preparing for an exam. You have to cover all the material included. Time management, good nutrition, following the training plan, and trusting yourself all play a part when getting ready for any type of race. All grounds need to be covered and well-prepared for you to be ready to step up and begin the race. What are the most important elements that made you a successful professional swimmer? Dedication will always come first. Furthermore, I am addicted to success and, because of my high competitive spirit, it pushes me even further to achieve what I aim to in this profession. I believe that these are all very needed in any type of profession because it keeps pushing you to becoming a better person and a better competitor.

come back after my illness and I’m glad that it all went well in the end. Now, I am able to keep my full focus on swimming and work every single day to improve myself.

Preparing for a race is just like preparing for an exam. You have to cover all the material included. What motivated you to get back in the game after recovering from your rare illness? Well, I always believed that the human body and mind are very capable of doing more than one major thing in life at the same time. Such as swimming and studying or even training and working. It’s possible to work on two major projects at the same time as well. With this in mind, I kept working hard in order to

20

What are your emotions right before diving into the pool for a race? I like this question. Before a race, I am able to smell the chlorine and hear the audience cheer for us and that makes me feel great and pumps me up when I’m about to race. However, the whole world suddenly goes on ‘silent mode’ when the whistle blows and, once the race begins, all that I can listen to is

‫قصة الغالف‬

my own breath and my heart-beat. It takes a lot of concentration and I am able to shut out all the noise in order to focus on the prize. How has living in Kuwait helped you achieve your dream? Why or why not? Life in Kuwait is a little bit luxurious and, with that, we have a lot of time and high income on order to get the best gears available in the world. Living here has really helped me grow in this profession and I don’t have any regrets about it.

Please tell us more about “Poseidon” your swimming program I came up with the idea of “Poseidon” during January 2013. I have always loved sharing some of my greatest memories in life, so giving people the same exact source of happiness and achievements is the main reason behind why I came up with the reason to make “Poseidon”. What are your hobbies other than swimming? Since swimming has become more of a profession for me, I don’t really consider it a “hobby” as much anymore even though I really love it. With that said, I really enjoy other things such as horseback riding, reading, and various types of music.

From the locations that you have visited for swimming, where was your favorite? Why? Zell Am See in Salzburg, Austria was definitely the best place that I was able to swim in. It was beautiful in every possible way and the view was heavenly perfect! As of now, that is the greatest place that I swam in and I hope to continue visiting different places in order to experience the culture and be able to compete in front of a variety of audiences.

How are you preparing for the upcoming Abu Dhabi ITU in March? Are there any races that you’re working towards? For this upcoming race, I am going with a new approach to compete. My coach is really helping me reach the level that I need to be in and therefore, I’m training about 2-3 hours per day. Also, a strict nutrition system and a fixed timetable are crucial and I am doing that in order to manage everything well. In addition to the race in March, I am also working towards another race called the Ironman 70.3 but I still haven’t decided which country it will be in yet.

Anything else that you would like to add? Life isn’t about being tough or the best. Surround yourself with the right people and success will be honored to have you on-bored. You should always add some type of physical activity in your life in order to have better health, a better social life, and a better mind. We would like to thank the GUST Management for allowing us to use their swimming pool for this photo shoot.

The Color of the Deep Oris introduces the new Oris Aquis Date Orange Having a “water-proof” watch is usually a must and Oris has been able to take that to a new level through innovation and technology to make this watch the one to have when it comes to the look and, more importantly, when it comes to diving. Oris have released their new innovative watch, the Aquis Date Orange, in their latest high-functioning diving watches designed for hostile conditions experienced underwater. It has continued to solve the problem of how to introduce a practical, legible depth gauge into a mechanical watch without compromising Oris’s sensibly priced watches’ mantra. This latest innovation is based on the work by two authors in their 1974 work, “Perception and Performance Under Water” where they examined the visibility of color underwater, discovering that in the majority of conditions, yellow, green and orange are the most visible colors through water. This logic has inspired Oris… Diving watches are critical underwater tools and are used to indicate dive time and for calculating oxygen levels and decompression stops. Diving watches need to have clear displays, to be accurate, and highly legible. Oris has created a watch with first-rate underwater legibility. The orange elements are shown in maximum contrast against a unidirectional rotating bezel with a black ceramic inlay and a black dial and gun-metal grey stainless steel PVD—coated case. This is a great choice for any swimmer or diver and is definitely a beautiful watch for anyone to own. With its latest innovative changes, Oris continues to impress with the design and the impeccable attention to detail. Get your hands on their latest innovation as soon as possible!

University Officials Give Their Advice How to make your goals and stay motivated in university

There is no denying that things could get quite difficult when it comes to university. We’ve all had those days where we simply didn’t even want to get up in the morning and attend class. Well, we caught up with a few university officials in Kuwait as they gave their advice on how we can plan for the future and also stay motivated during our university life.

Question:

How can university students plan for their upcoming goals in an organized manner? And how would they increase their motivation to stay committed to their goals?

Anwar Al-Sabah Head of Student Life - GUST

Basel Dana Student Recreational Activities Manager – ACK

I believe that making new goals for the new year should start with listing all the mishaps of the previous year, hang them on your fridge or anywhere visible for them daily and stick next to it the new resolutions with deadlines for the coming year to avoid the same mistakes.

When you think about your goals, try to list the steps you need to take to achieve them. I find writing them down on paper is the best way to stay organized. You can check off the completed items on your list which, you have to admit, makes you feel accomplished. Sometimes, you may feel discouraged or feel the need to procrastinate. What I find works best is visualising the end result. This gives you a new surge of motivation to work towards your goals. Just remember that no matter how difficult it gets, the end result makes it worth it.

Fatma Al-Matrouk Public Relations Officer - KU College of Business Administration 1) Students should find what their passion is so that they can be creative in their fields. 2) They should have a good role model to follow their steps, get inspired by them and borrow some of their ideas and achievements. 3) To believe in themselves and be confident about what they are doing . As zig ziglar said “people say that motivation doesn’t last. well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily”. students must always trace their results of any chore they do and when they face struggles they ought to know the reasons that led them to face such troubles and thus they will avoid their mistakes and evaluate their selves and put in mind that every setback is a feedback for a better comeback.

30

‫كالم الطلبة تحقيق‬

Dr. Carol Ross Vice President - AUK By being more proactive and constantly reminding themselves of what they are trying to accomplish while maintaining a positive outlook. Students should action-oriented and self-motivated. Posting sticky notes serves as a continuous reminder of goals. To avoid unrealistic goal setting, I advise them to consider 3 things they would like to accomplish within a year, then consider 5 things they would like to accomplish within 7 years, and 7 things to accomplish in 10 years. Write your goals down! Your goals may overlap or be distinct, but remember that your commitment and determination is the key to success, as you will inevitably face obstacles at some point or another. That’s life. And when life happens, have the will and character to keep calm and continue.

Sonia Jammoul Senior Marketing Official - BoxHill You plan for the upcoming goals by setting a timeline and end date and by cooperating with the teachers on weekly basis to check results progress. To stay motivated, you have to complete your home work, ask for extra help when needed, study daily on hour at least, and get “B”s at least in tests

Mr. Paul Bassil Executive Manager; Communications and Public Relations - AUM The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime (or at least, by a significant and distant age in the future). Setting lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making. Spend some time brainstorming these things, and then select one or more goals in each category that best reflect what you want to do. Then consider trimming again so that you have a small number of really significant goals that you can focus on. A useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. SMART usually stands for: S – Specific M – Measurable A – Attainable R – Relevant T – Time-bound

Student Life University Clubs

The Accounting Club

Event and activities, beyond the numerical education

The Accounting Club at Gulf University of Science has been working strenuously to be the number one club in the university. With their aim to create activities to cater to all students on campus, their recent event "Movember" has shown palpable success in fulfill their purpose and working together as a team. How did they do it? it was easy as 1,2,3. How does GUST's Accounting Club enrich the students' academic experience? The Accounting Club aims to provide several educational opportunities to accounting students in regards to accounting and auditing. For that reason, we hosted a seminar with international accounting firms and auditing companies such as PWC, Big Four, KPMG, Earnest and Young, and Deloitte. We try to diversify our academic events in order to cater to all the business majors as well, hence our business trip to Barcelona to introduce several businesses and corporations to the students. All our seminars are opened to GUST to enrich their knowledge about business. A great example would be hosting a seminar with Mr. Adel Al-Majed, Bank Boubyan CEO, to inform the students about history of Boubyan Bank and the new banking services. How can major related club develop an educational experience not related to business? The Club's objective is create events that encompass the whole student body, not only business majors. Our "Our Movember event purpose was to spread awareness regarding prostate cancer. Also, during the event we had competitions, games and prizes for the students entertainment. Several students are not aware of the concept of "Movember" or have any knowledge regarding prostate cancer. We created seminars to increase their knowledge and we are the only club that took initiative in regards to educating the students for such disease. Students had the opportunity to have checkups and nutritional tips from Al-Salam Hospital and International Clinic. Our gratitude goes to Mercedes and NBK for sponsoring the event. What are the main obstacles that you have faced? Fortunately, Gulf University provides us with the support we need while setting up the events for the students. The minor obstacles is that we must book all the halls and the dates way in advance for space. Also, as the accounting club, all our events must fall under the accounting umbrella which only somewhat challenges our creativity while creating entertaining or awareness events for other students.

32

For example, the theme for the "Movember" Event was Monopoly. As we all know the Monopoly Man has a mustache which is also the symbol for "Movember". We had a carpet size monopoly board that includes all the areas in Kuwait instead of countries. As the president, how do you manage the club to reach success? We decide on the tasks that need to be done and they are shared with the Vice President for the guys and the Vice President for the girls. Each vice president has committees under him/her such as Social Media committee, events planning committee, secretarial committee. Then, the vice president delegates the tasks to each of the committee responsible for such task. Each committee has a leader to make sure that the work is completely fulfilled. Don't you think that such bureaucracy will slow down the process for each task? With such a big club like the Accounting club with more than 30 members, this is the only strategy to ensure efficiency . This system ensures that the work is equally delegated to all members and it easier to track down the mistakes. Also, we all work together diligently as a team, it is the lack of effort that would slow down any task. What are your future goals for 2015? Our aim to is be the number one club in GUST. We would like everyone to know about our accomplishments not only inside the university. The club is preparing for the "Accounting Week" at GUST to show our capabilities and goals to students, especially that we do not only target accounting students, we open our arms to GUST Student body. We are seeking towards creating more events outside of campus.

Kuwait Wrestling Club Stimulating Body and Mind The Kuwait Wresting Club is a non-profit organization that aims at helping others learn about wrestling and give people a place to practice as it is the ONLY wrestling program in Kuwait. It is an Olympic sport that teaches values like hard work and commitment and therefore it is more than just the idea of wrestling. They specialize mostly in collegiate (folkstyle) wresting and are always looking to expand with new members and volunteers. They are also looking for any extra assistance since they had provlems with proper facilities and adequate space and mats. The vision is to see wresting as a regular option at high schools, college campuses, and sports clubs. Maybe even a national sport! Khaled Al Hashash While surfing the web one day, Khaled stumbled upon the Kuwait Wrestling Club and has never looked back. An avid wrestling fan, Khaled always wanted a place to hone his wrestling skills. Now that he’s at KWC, he has become physically and mentally stronger due to the intense nature of the sport. Although he is disappointed with the lack of consistency in club members, Khaled hopes the government can give a helping hand in order to raise awareness for wrestling in Kuwait. He recommends the club to anyone who wishes to improve their martial arts skills. Fawaz Mohammad Al Kanderi Fawaz is someone who knows his martial arts, especially Jujitsu. Yet, that wasn’t quite satisfying for him. He wanted a fighting style where he could really bring down his opponent, literally! Thus, his life with Kuwait Wrestling Club was born since, at this club, he was able to perform all the takedowns he ever wanted. He was even surprised at how physically demanding it is on the body and mind. According to him however, that is all part of the fun. Fawaz believes everyone should join as it a great method for self defense and improving cardio. Faisal AlQattan Although Faisal enjoys his time playing soccer with his friends, he wanted to try something new and exciting. So through the good words of a friend, he decided to give Kuwait Wrestling Club a shot. From the first day, Faisal was completely hooked. He credits the club for turning his life around by making him a much healthier person. He also commented on how intense the sport can be at times. When asked about his experience in the ring, Faisal said, “People say it’s only 3 minutes, but it feels like 10. But it has benefited me because my stamina has increased by 80%.” He wants everyone who knows of the club to spread the word.

LOCATION: AbulHasan Sports complex in Dasma on Saturdays from 12 noon to 1:30pm.

Khalid AlQassar Khalid wanted a way to get back in shape but didn’t want to hit the gym since it’s boring. When he heard about Kuwait Wrestling Club, the first of its kind in the country, he couldn’t resist the temptation. According to Khalid, the trainers and coaches at the club were excellent in pushing him to greater physical capacities. Before he knew it, Khalid was back in shape and looking better than ever. Now he’s much faster and more precise in his martial art skills. He’s already begun recruiting more people to join the club! Khaled Matar You’re probably wondering, wow, another Khaled in the group. That’s right, for one reason or another Khaleds love wrestling and you can bet wrestling loves them too. This one got into Kuwait Wrestling Club because he wanted to improve his mixed martial arts game. In fact, it was his MMA coach that told Khaled about the club. He says it’s one of the best sports he’s ever played. He believes the key to wrestling is learning how to control your opponent by keeping him on the ground. Abdulrahman Farman Social media can be a wonderful thing sometimes. For instance, Abdulrahman had been looking tirelessly for a wrestling club until he spotted Kuwait Wrestling Club on the everso-addicting Instagram. So why use all that energy just to find a club? Well, Abdulrahman knew the grappling technique of wrestling would help him in the MMA tournaments he normally participates in. He also loves the fact that you can have 100 percent full contact fighting with a friend and not actually have anyone get seriously hurt. Mohammed Alsayegh Some people have grown up with martial arts since the day they were young little boys. Mohammed is definitely in that category. Mixed martial arts ooze through this man’s veins and so it was only natural he would find his way to the Kuwait Wrestling Club. What he values most is the strength and confidence he’s gained since becoming a member.

Student Diwaniya Topic of the Month

New Goals & Ambitions Our Goals lead to our Achievements Coming up with goals doesn’t necessarily have to happen on New Year’s Eve but it is always recommended to have it prepared by the end of January at most so that you have enough time to make it all happen. Timing is always important when planning for the future so therefore try to have it done but always be sure to make it effective!

dicate some of cember 31, we de that we would Every year, on De about everything our time to thinking the upcoming year. Whether for ds or family, like to accomplish ss it with our frien cu dis or ne alo it we do ey are willing type of list that th everyone has some te, stop smoking, open a new adua to accomplish. Creating your goals requires time and effor t but, at the same time, it can’t get any easier to do. First of all, it is important to reflect on your positives and negatives of the past year then narrowing it down: Which positives do you want to keep going and which negatives do you completely want to get rid of? Once that is over, you then attempt to think of as many goals as possible for the upcoming year. Go crazy with it! A year is quite a long time and a lot can be achieved, especially the “smaller” goals that you come up with. Very quickly, you’ll realiz e that you have a long list of random goals that you would like to achieve. This is where the slight ly more difficult part begins:

40

“On top of the world!”

‫ديوانية الطلبة موضوع الشهر‬

To keep it all plain and simple, the great Muhammad Ali said it perfectly, “What keeps me going is goals”.

Making Kuwait Proud Active Students

Latifa Al-Qallaf A novelist who takes love and marriage to a different perspective Latifa Al-Qallaf is a Kuwaiti writer who has just published her new Arabic novel, “Tonadena Al Masha’er” as she looks in depth into the life of a woman in Kuwait and the difficulties when dealing with relationships and marriage. It’s very different to anything you have read before so go and order a copy now! Tell us a bit about your book. Most Kuwaiti girls have questions about marriage and within this book they are all answered. For instance, we live in a world where it is innappropriate to talk to a guy then you get married and he’s sitting close to you. It’s confusing. It was to answer all kinds of questions about love before marriage. What does it mean to be a wife? There is one thing that everyone needs to know: When you get married, you’re going to face the fact that you are going to be haunted about your past in every way. This book talks about two people, Razan and Hamed, who work together then get married. wrote it to convince all Kuwaiti girls my age that they don’t need to fall in love in order to know someone.

Order my book on Instagram or Twitter (@AAQ96) and have it homedelivered!

What are the benefits and the main ideas? The benefits are: 1) You fall in love. 2) I want people to be happy and enjoy it. 3) A guy and a girl like each other then he attempts to get close but she refuses. It brings up many different questions. 3) Also, how to get married to a guy? One of the main ideas I want them to understand is that love before marriage means nothing when compared to love after marriage because that is when you really know a person. That is the full concept. What made you write this book? The secret in being a writer is that you need to know that you can’t write the book, it writes itself. I was bored and wrote three different moments in the middle of my book and then it made out itself. You realize that you have to tell your story somehow. This was my way. Who supported you during this journey? Sara Al-Mahmoud, Rawan Al-Saleh,Hawra’a Dashti and my father, Hassan Al-Qallaf. What would you like your readers to take away from reading this book? There are three reactions. 1) I want them to notice how much dreams were inside the book. 2 ) I want them to fall in love with my male character. 3) I want them to understand my concept and develop it themselves. My book gives you a concept and you’re going to be amazed about how different it is that you develop the idea alone.

42

Future Plans? I’m going to publish three books together in two different languages so, technically, six books. That is my closest future plan and, of course, graduating from AUM as an engineer! I don’t want to say anything more about this but I could tell you one thing. The final book will be called “The Polkadot Game”. Anything else? I want to say that a writer’s greatest gift isn’t the ability to write thoughts down into a book, it is actually having people read their book and understanding their concept and falling in love with their creation.

Making Kuwait Proud LOYAC

LOYAC Peace Voyage LOYAC completes the Peace Voyage Program LOYAC continues to impress with their innovative ideas and their dedication to hard work. With time, they have established themselves as one of the leaders when it comes to assisting students whether it was with work or experience throughout the year. Now, they have been able to complete the LOYAC Peace Voyage Program. The program is aimed to create leaders who believe in and promote peace actively throughout the region and the four delegates who participated in it during September and October were able to complete it very successfully. As part of the LOYAC Peace Voyage program, the delegates attended several training workshops on professional research and presentation skills, participated in the 15th

International Model of the UNESCO held in the Argentine Republic, and enjoyed a touristic program while they were there. The team that participated were able to achieve excellent results. The three papers they presented in three commissions – education and culture, science and social science – were all voted for and included in the final debate. The team came back last month with a great appreciation and passion for universal peace.

“We need to work together to nurture the soul of each individual and spread the message of peace, understanding, and love” – Meshari Al-Sejari, a LOYAC delegate said upon his return. LOYAC aims to build leaders and, for that to happen effectively, they have found a great way to incorporate the youth of Kuwait into their main plan. The LOYAC Peace Voyage Program is only one of the many opportunities offered by them to the people.

Talent Competition

Which Guitarist

Will win the ''Most Talented''

Competition?

Tell us more about yourself Well, my name is Omar Mohammad Abbas and I’m from Egypt. I’m 21-years-old and I am currently studying Computer Engineering at the American University of Kuwait. What is your talent? My talent is music in general but I have been able to find a specific passion when it comes to playing the guitar. It’s a great feeling and it’s something that I wish I can continue for many more years.

How did you develop your talent? I discovered that I can play music when I was 20 years old. In the space of 14 months, I kept on training practically on a daily basis to play as many styles of music as I could. My focus was on electric guitar in the beginning but recently I started playing Spanish guitar and piano. With that said, my love for electric guitar just keeps on increasing and I want to learn more and more everyday.

What are your future plans? Even though I don’t see music as a part of my career life, I certainly consider it a hobby that I enjoy doing. It’s a great way for me to relax after a long day and I plan to keep it that way. Hopefully, in the future, I am also planning to master other instruments other than just the guitar. Who supported your talent? When I first started playing, it was my friends who encouraged me to continue doing this. After I was able to play, my family were always there to support and encourage me as well because they really liked my music and saw how dedicated I was. Did you encounter any obstacles? Yes, at the beginning it was hard to play in my house as my parents didn’t like the idea of playing music at home. Therefore, for the first few months I used to go train at my friends house or at my place when everyone is sleeping. That wasn’t comfortable at all for a beginner but it also made me appreciate the time I had to play. Now, things are different because I was able to get the support from my parents as well. Any last words for the readers? I truly encourage the readers to try everything. I would have never discovered my talent of playing music if I didn’t want to try it. So, try new stuff as you may find yourself in one of these different things and it could shape who you are in the future.

Omar Abbas

At Orchid Medical Center, they identify your skin type and search for any problems in your medical history before taking care of your skin to ensure the results you seek! This machine will cleanse your skin, close your pours and message your skin to have a glow.

Laser hair removal has to be done at an older age is a myth that we have heard throughout our lives. Well, it’s completely wrong as Dr. Sanaa strongly advised all the girls at the age of 18 to start using the laser hair removal. The traditional ways such as waxing or shaving can cause skin irritation and maybe even acne. At the Orchid Medical Center, they conduct a thorough checkup regarding the skin glands, skin type, and previous medical history to make sure that nothing they do would be harmful. Their hair removal does NOT cause any pain or scares! On average, 6 to 8 sessions should be enough but, of course, it all depends on your personal consultation.

Dr. Saraa also advised that the laser hair removal is a long term investment. Unlike the traditional ways of hair removal, you will be guaranteed a clean and hairless body in the future. Eventually, you will feel more comfortable and confident to wear anything you want.

Of course, all the mentioned services offered by Orchid Medical Center are not only for females as they often receive male patients that also want to work on a certain problem they’re facing whether it’s for weight-loss, hair removal, or skin problems. At Orchid Medical Center, it is all offered.

As for the weight-loss machine, there are two ways of using it. It’s either the ‘Radiosound’ which cuts down the extra fat and then the ‘Radio Frequency” which tightens the part you’re working on and at the same time helps with weight-loss. The patient also has to exercise while on this machine because exercise helps tighten the body in ways that the machine cannot do alone. In a way, the patient and the doctor have to work together in order to make this happen.

How long have you been working in Ooredoo? I met customers living and visiting Kuwait. What about the clients, the clients who are very tech-savvy and others who are looking for basic services? How do you serve them? Alaa: Tech-savvy customers will search for the recent technological updates. As part of my job, I must be informed with the new updates in order to explain how these updates will serve their needs on daily basis. However, for the customer with basic knowledge, who is not fully informed about recent updates, we must inform him of the latest devices and services that fulfil their fundamental needs. Mishal: I believe that the tech-savvy customers are well informed. They visit our branches and ask for the newest device such iPhone 6 or Note 4, which means they inform us with their needs and we fulfil it. On the other hand, with other customers, you have to inform them about the new devices and services from Ooredoo and then they make the decision accordingly. What would you say is the biggest challenge you face? Alaa: I believe the main challenge is to reach my goal of being the best sales person at Ooredoo. To overcome such a challenge, I must have excellent communication skills with

A customer might have a bad day and all you need to do is to greet them with a smile and kind words and they will be all ears to you. Other customers might be lost and we must be their main source of information. Also, customers who are not sure about what they want exactly need extra attention from us in order for us to provide them with the help and the right information in order to reach customer satisfaction. Mishal: At the airport, there are other telecommunication companies beside me and I learned how to attract the customer to Ooredoo by building a solid trust through providing the right information that the customer want to know. In what ways did Ooredoo create an impact on the personal level? Alaa: I made connections with several customers and co-workers. Before joining Ooredoo, I used to be a very shy person. There was a huge transformation in my character, an improvement definitely. However, this barrier was broken since now I have more confidence in myself and my work. Mishal: Working at the Airport branch allowed me to meet all the different types of people which increased my connection circle exponentially. I encountered several situations when I wanted to fix my car or finish some personal work and my customers recognize me. Thankfully because at Ooredoo we provide the best service, they also return the favor and provide Ooredoo employees with the finest service. If you help your customers, they will help you in the future. Where do you see yourself in the future with Ooredoo? Alaa: I see myself growing in my position and skills with Ooredoo. I always aim for higher positions with more challenges and responsibilities. I see a bright future ahead of me with Ooredoo. Mishal: I have the same potential as Alaa. I aim that my hard work through helping others will be palpable to my company and memorable to my customers. What is your advice to fresh graduates looking to join their first job? Alaa: To discover your assets and search for experience, I believe working in the private sector is a great opportunity. It the perfect place to prove your strength and abilities. KIPCO & the Protégés A boat exhibition that exceeded all expectations Exhibitor bookings were at full capacity, in spite of the show being double the size it was in 2013. The new upgraded exhibition area comprised shows both on land and in the water with 10,000 square metres of water basin surface, and more than 15,000 square metres of pavilions and outdoor areas. Attracting a lot of attention was a luxury dhow, which was made in Qatar by Al Mannai Marines which has recently moved its manufacturing base to Al Ruwais shipyard. The 150-tonne dhow is 33m in length and incorporates the latest advancements in technology while maintaining the traditional look of a Qatari dhow. The largest boat on display was a 40m Floating House from Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Waves. The boat took 18 months to build and costs around QR12mn.

Ambassadors, senior diplomats and several government officials were in attendance. The organisers arranged a tour for the visiting media to Nakilat (NDSQ) shipyard, situated in Ras Laffan. The shipyard covers a total area of 58,000sqm and includes a massive ship construction hall (270m long x 65m wide x 45m high) capable of simultaneously accommodating four vessels completely undercover. “QIBS is a showcase for modern Qatar and its ambitions.” said Essa al-Mannai, chairman

of the organizing company. “It is being increasingly recognised around the world as a major shop window for boats and services in the maritime industry, especially in the Gulf Region. The show has without doubt reinforced our view that Qatar has carved out for itself in the international boat show circuit.” As part of the closing ceremony on the Saturday, all boats in the marina at Lusail sounded their horns for a full minute at 9pm.

The Benefits of Kale A few tips on some kale-tastic dishes Kale comes with many great benefits as it being low in calories while high in fiber and provides zero fat. It is also high in iron and Vitamin K. Iron helps with energy and oxygen while Vitamin K drastically prevents blood clotting. These are only some of the major benefits that you can get when incorporating Kale into your diet but the question remains: How can you put Kale in your diet without getting bored? Here are a few ways that you can do it without getting sick of it fast:

1

2

Sautéed Tuscan Kale: One of the best ways to cook Kale is by Sauteeing it. Even though it fades a bit (just like spinach), it doesn’t lose nearly as many benefits. It may not be the healthiest way to cook it but a bit of it once in a while will be quite beneficial!

3

Steamed Kale: This is probably the quickest and easiest way to cook this vegetable. Steamed Kale is extremely beneficial and is usually put on the side with other proteins such as Salmon on Grilled Steak.

Kale Chips: This one is great when it comes to the kids! They don’t like the “green stuff” that are in their foods so therefore you can win them over with some Kale chips with a tad of salt. They will enjoy it while having some healthy snacks during the day.

4

Minestrone Soup: Even though Kale isn’t the stand-out feature of this recipe, it is certainly a necessity. Minestrone Soup is enjoyed by many and therefore adding Kale in there will enrich the taste and add a lot of extra benefits. For all you soup lovers out there, this is surely a great way to go!

Of course, these aren’t all the recipe’s that you can incorporate Kale into but feel free to also get creative! It’s a type of vegetable that can easily be added to many of your favorite dishes and therefore, especially if you cook it differently often, it won’t be a hassle nor will it be something that you just can’t stand after a few days. With time, you will be able to realize its benefits and will probably want to find even more ways to cook it and make it a part of your meals!

Well, that saying has been proven completely wrong as the VKOOL racing team competed in the Gulf Run and made history for being the first ever women group to compete AND complete the 24-hour endurance karting race which resulted in medals for professional, quality and ethical driving. Belief and exemplary teamwork prevailed as the VKOOL racing team competed in the Gulf Run and made history for being the first ever women group to compete AND complete the 24-hour endurance karting race which resulted in medals for professional, quality and ethical driving. With only two weeks of preparation and three hours of practice, they were able to put their names into the history books as they were led by Kuwait’s Drift Champion, Mubarak Al-Rumaidhi and, the team captain, Najat Al Sayegh. Furthermore, they were also trained by Certified Calisthenics Athlete, Firas Al Essa. This impressive team were honored with medals while the rest of the teams cheered in support and respect for a team that has been able to go against all odds! One of the members, Sarah Al Shabban won Miss GulfRun for her performance and ethical driving as she had the best lap time of 00.42.439 seconds while Dalal Al Jassim drove for two hours and 20 minutes straight! Of course, this all adds to some amazing sportsmanship on and off the track as they were spotted offering food, drinks and support to the opposing teams. No one thought that they can continue throughout the 24 hours, but then again they proved everyone wrong as they kept going without even having the thought of giving up at any point. With great chemistry, full commitment and team support, the women were always there for each other and avoided any type of drama as well! Even though a lot of them met for the first time on the team, they quickly found a way to work together and aim for the finish line from day one! This goes to show what self-belief, hard work, and amazing teamwork gets you.

The circuit was hectic and, at times, quite chaotic but women were always able to keep their calm and continue their ways as they kept getting better lap times with every lap. With that alone, they were able to prove their commitment and dedication to the event by quickly working on improvement with every lap. Many of the other teams and the organizers of the event were extremely impressed by the tremendous professionalism and skilled driving of the women in the race. Many attended not expecting too much but the women always kept their high spirits and believed that this is something that they can do! A fantastic achievement for the women who did something that many people thought would not be possible. What they did may LOOK easy but it is nothing close to that. The VKOOL team have officially made history and they are not looking back.
