The V-KOOL® All-Women Racing Team

Racing towards making history Adrenaline rush, determination, concentration, and anticipation are only a few of the characteristics needed when you’re part of a race. A group of 13 women went through all these emotions and more as they were able to make history by becoming the first team of only women to compete and complete the GulfRun 24 Hour Endurance Race. They fought hard and came out with a very deserving end to a wonderful story. STUDENTALK caught up with V-KOOL® to know more about this great achievement organized by them and to see what their future plans were! Can you briefly explain what VKOOL® is and what services are offered? V-KOOL® markets top quality and high performance window films under the brand name V-KOOL®. The V-KOOL® product allows maximum amount of daylight transmittance and selectively cutting 94% of Infra-red and 99% of UV rays. The services offered are: a) Premium window tints for the Automotive industry (Cars) b) Architectural films – IQUE c) Ultramaster Car Care products

What differentiates V-KOOL® from the other companies that provide similar services? Unlike conventional solar control materials which absorb and re-radiate heat, V-KOOL® combines high performance solar control with high visible light transmission. Our window coating allows over 70% light transmission, and blocks out 94% infra-red and 99% ultra-violet rays respectively, without

layers of precious metals in atom form unto the world’s top 1% grade of opticallyclear and durable polyester film, which no other competitor brand can do. Therefore, V-KOOL® coatings are able to spectralselectively block off unwanted wavelength while admitting others. What was the vision behind V-KOOL® starting a racing team? This creates a unique visibility to the Brand

This is where V-Kool® came in to give those hidden talents a chance. impeding clarity and visibility whether it was day or night. This is why V-KOOL® is the forefront leader in today’s window film industry and it is how we were able to make a name for ourselves. V-KOOL®’s technology was voted as one of the top 100 inventions of the Millennium! What technology are you able to build into the protection you produce? The Multi-chamber DC Magnetron Sputtering Machine is capable of sputtering multi-

V-KOOL® on a longer run and that was our plan. The team members will be our brand ambassadors and we hope that it can continue being as successful as it has been so far. Was there a particular reason behind this team being all women? Yes, it was the first time in GulfRun 24hr Endurance Race to have an all women team joining the karting race. The ladies were always motivated to join but didn’t have the right guidance and this is where V-KOOL®

‫قصة الغالف‬

Racing came in to give those hidden talents a chance. With our help and guidance, we were able to give them an opportunity that they wanted and we are proud to see the success that has come out of it after all the hard-work that they put in. What training process did they go through to prepare for the race? V-KOOL® Racing team was managed by Kuwait’s Drift Champion, Mubarak AlRumaidhi, who prepared practice sessions to develop their racing skills. We had two programs to prepare for the race: the stamina and strength training course with Firas AlEssa, who is a Certified Calisthenics Trainer and they had the opportunity to practise on the circuit. The ladies didn’t have more than 10 days to prepare for their first 24hr karting endurance race and they did an amazing job especially when you consider the lack of time that they had. When the team was first formed, what were your initial expectations? Honestly, it was a thrilling challenge to start with and the goal was to finish the race which was very well deserved. The ladies finished the race without any penalties, which in itself is a wonderful achievement. Before knowing any of their skills, we were a tad worried about the pressure during the race since we did not know what to expect and it really is a difficult race to be competing in but they were comfortable from race start and showed great skill and determination throughout the race.

In the end, how was the result? Our goal was to finish the race even though we finished at the back of the line. The team did an amazing job for being professional drivers during the race especially with their driving ethics. Furthermore, we were also able to win Miss GulfRun, Sarah Al Shaban, who happens to be the fastest woman driver during the race, recording 00:41.439 seconds. It is a great achievement for the girls and for her as well. Can we expect anything else in the future from the V-KOOL® Racing Team? Yes, the V-KOOL® Racing team is already planning to continue racing in similar race events in the region. The team is looking forward to start racing on professional racing circuits soon and there will be an intensive driving course to improve the team’s driving skills on different racing circuits. This will help them improve while also giving them the needed motivation and knowledge to continue racing in other regions.

The names of the drivers who competed in this race were: Najat Al Sayegh (Team Captain) Aisha Al Abdulkareem Dalal Al Jassem Danah Jbara Haya Alissa Fatima Al Shaya Lulwa Al Sayegh Noor Al Sayegh Rawya Al Hajri Rabaa Al Hajri Sarah Al Shaban Suad Al Fraih Shaikha Al Suraiya

Anything that you would like to add? The V-KOOL® Racing team is full of dedication, commitment and team work, which is a key when it comes to motorsports and endurance racing. Thanks to our sponsors, Pastamania, Giordano and Nexen Tires for their support during our previous 24hr endurance race and we are looking forward to work together again in future events.

How did the women feel when approaching the race? As expected, they were skeptical in the beginning because they were the only all women team and it’s a lot of pressure since they know that many will be watching them. As the environment started getting pumped with adrenaline and the teams met during the drivers briefing, they became comfortable and more prepared to show what they are capable of. They did not disappoint whatsoever.

Brands

Voice Their Opinions Brands, Businesses and Talents are some of many groups of people that have helped STUDENTALK become what it is today. Now, they make their voices heard with how STUDENTALK has helped them over the past 15 years. We asked the brands: How did your cooperation with STUDENTALK Magazine help in reaching out to university students?

Elie Zorba (Media Manager – Impact&Echo BBDO Group) Students have the power to focus on the present and the future simultaneously, this was an empowerment that was created through STUDENTALK Magazine. Students have the freedom to share their first experiences and encourage others to do the same and this is why we believe that we can reach them through STUDENTALK.

Ali Hussain Abbas (Head of Marketing – Landmark Group Kuwait) Thank you STUDENTALK for all your constant support and partnership throughout the years. Through your esteemed magazine Landmark Group has been able to successfully reach out to students all across Kuwait. Your magazine is creative, fresh and always Up-to-date with current happenings. Wish you all the very best for the years ahead.

Shahzad Gidwani (General Manager – Behbehani Group) Building brand awareness (especially brands that target the youth), is an ongoing challenge. The target audience is cluttered (different ethnic groups, gender, age etc.) therefore the best way to build a brand, is to work on taping the youth and get their attention on our brands. Student Talk gives us the opportunity to build a communication platform to target the youth and enhance their interaction with our brands, as they will be the brand ambassadors who will carry their brand experience to their peers. This has and will continue to help us increase brand equity and sales.

Rabaa Al Hajeri (Head of Marketing – LOYAC) STUDENTALK is an important conduit for us to reach the youth in Kuwait, and is an effective tool that has brought us exposure among our target market. Having started my career in marketing working for STUDENTALK, I got to witness the magazine grow and evolve to become a sought after publication, both from an organization and readers view, today as I head the marketing of LOYAC, STUDENTALK is always a recurring publication name in my campaign plans.

Walid Kanafani (General Manager – MEC) Good Magazines aren’t always filled with great writings, but STUDENTALK goes one step ahead as its one of the most popular magazine about University students in Kuwait, as it depicts the student life and lifestyle in this part of the world.

Ibrahim Kalash (Business Managing Director – Zenith) STUDENTALK slogan says it all: “Read Them Talk”, “Them” as university students. From its cover story, to its different sections such as “Student Said”, “Student Life”, “Student Diwaniya” and other rich one, STUDENTALK has been part of students’ lives, their memories and the campus experience since it was established 15 years ago.

As a media agency, we have a long association with the magazine, probably from its first issue a good 14 years ago. We have often placed ads not just for our clients but ads requesting participation from students in various seminars and workshops related to the media, advertising & marketing world, so that it could be an added benefit in their course of study. STUDENTALK magazine comprises of not just good writing of fiction and non-fiction but is very informative and emphasis on spreading awareness among students on their civil responsibilities and portraying a positive role in society. It also gives students a platform to voice their opinion and motivates them through their columns and writing. Wishing you all at STUDENTALK all the very best on this 15th Anniversary and continuous success thereafter always…

26

When it comes to our relationship with STUDENTALK - as an agency servicing some of the biggest clients in Kuwait in terms of media planning, communication strategies, evaluation and buying – we can describe PH7 (Publisher of STUDENTALK) as talented, professional and innovative company, which always enriches our communications by offering creative and unconventional solutions for our clients’ campaigns. One major solution that STUDENTALK unlocks for our campaigns is enabling us to reach our target youth at universities, as well as other places, in a very smooth and effective way.

Talents

Voice Their Opinions In the past 15 years, in what ways did STUDENTALK Magazine help in showcasing your talents?

Abdullah Al-Mass Throughout the whole 15 years, STUDENTALK has helped a lot of college students get recognition for their talents from many different categories, from art to music. STUDENTALK gave me the spotlight on their music event which boosted my morale and my name as a guitarist throughout all the universities which gave me a lot of job opportunities and for that I thank them.

Ghanima Qudmani STUDENTALK supported me when I first started by giving me the coverage in the competition. It’s a support that every fresh musician needs to continue in that field.

Omar Al-Mana’a STUDENTALK was able to help me show my talent in front of a great crowd. I was able to play in the Talent Competition and also be featured in their magazine. The event was wonderful and I really admire how they are actively looking for new talents in Kuwait and finding ways to give them a platform to work from. This is a great initiative from STUDENTALK and I appreciate everything that they have been able to do for me.

Batool Al-Ali Well, I knew STUDENTALK this year and I think that it helped me showing my talent, going up to stage and the feat that I have from that.

Mohammad Al-Sarraf I have enjoyed reading what students wrote and talked about. After a few years, I realized that STUDENTALK started discovering hidden talents in different universities. I have participated in one of the STUDENTALK competitions in who has a better talent in playing instruments. This competition and the support I got from STUDENTALK pushed me to exceed myself. I would like to thank everyone at the magazine for giving me this opportunity.

Abdul Latif They made an event for us to show our talents in front of everyone live which gave us needed courage and confidence for the future

Omar Abbas At first, I was surprised that STUDENTALK magazine can showcase talents but, when I knew that it could, I went for the shot right away. The show itself was extremely organized, located in a nice and luxurious place, and everyone there was able to enjoy their time and the music. To be honest, I wouldn’t ask for a better opportunity. My friends and I had a lot of fun and will be visiting the upcoming shows for sure. If I had a chance to participate again, I wouldn’t miss it for the world. It was wonderful.

Student Life University Clubs

AUK Student Council Bringing the Students of AUK together

The American University of Kuwait has made it an aim to continuously improve throughout the years. They have now been able to appoint a new Student Council as this organization is there to help the students with their University activities and any other extra-curricular matters on campus. STUDENTALK was able to conduct an in-depth interview with the Student Council President and Vice-President to get an insight on who they are and their plans for the upcoming year. What is the Student Council? Khaled Jenaie: The Student Council is an organization at the University that serves a purpose to create a smooth student experience. We have the power to change policies and we are a hand to reckon with. We bring the students together. The group has the “power” to recommend policy changes but not necessarily change policies. Ali Kelkawi: We are the voice of the students. We are no different to Student Councils in any other university, and we are here to address any issues and concerns. We will also be organizing and helping out with various events. Who are the members of the current Student Council? President: Khaled Jenaie Vice President: Ali Kelkawi Secretary: Haya Al Sabah Treasurer: Aziz Al-Thuwaini Judicial Committee Chair: Bader Al Asfoor PR & Marketing Committee Chair: Amani Al Ajmi Media Affairs Committee Chair: SamerShaheen Club & Organizations Committee Chair: Farah Ahmed Events Planning Committee Chair: Natasha Al Houti How will having a Student Council benefit AUK as a University? KJ: It will mostly help with the policies. As a student, you now have somewhere to go to. Whether it is suggestions for the university, sponsorships for other clubs, or anything that has to do with AUK as a whole, we are here to help. AK: It’s very beneficial. AUK is 10-years-old and has so much potential to grow. Students are vital to the growth of the University and, together, we can take a stand and make a change. Do you feel that the students have responded positively to this newly formed club? KJ: This isn’t really a club, it’s a Student Union. I have been approached by many people and all I have gotten so far are great responses. It’s still new though and people are afraid, which cis very normal.

34

‫حياة الطلبة أندية جامعية‬

It takes courage to be a part of something new. We have many points to address already and it won’t be considered a success until all the points are solved. It is not a Student Union but a recognized student organization. AK: It’s really too early to tell. We have announced the Student Council recently and, therefore, when we start addressing the issues at hand, we will be able to decide how much of a success the Student Council is and also how the people react to it. It’s all in our hands right now. What are the goals for the Student Council? KJ: We are the arms in order to get more people to join the Student Council. We have to show them the power and change to make them want to be a part of it next year. We are not only making changes, you need to keep in mind that we are in the process of building something that was never there before. AK: The most important thing is to pursue others to be a part of this because, as of now, this is really not happening. We need to show them that it’s worth it and we also need to represent the student body. What have you begun with so far? KJ: We sponsored the Cooperation Club for the “Omra” trip and a proposal has been submitted for free food during the final exams. We will be using our budget for that to happen AK: We have set up the yearly plan for each month of work. We also need to show that we’re always there. We are not limited whatsoever with the plans we have and the door is always open for suggestions, of course.

We created a new organization and we aim for trust which is earned. This is one step. Have you encountered any obstacles in the beginning when trying to form the Student Council? If yes, what are they? KJ: There are obstacles with anything new that you build. We now have a new constitution and us being a transitional council limits us in ratifying this constitution. We have edited one for the next generation though. They are part of it now and they know the actual goal and mission. AK: Yes, our concern is being transparent with anyone. We have to make sure that everyone is on the same page. Also, time was a major obstacle and things were done and finalized by December, which means that we had approximately three months before it of doing nothing. Now, we have to catch up. Is there anything else that you would like to add? “We want the AUK Students to trust us and believe we can do something different” – Farah Ahmed “I’m happy and looking forward to giving the students a chance. We are all proud to be their voices” – Aziz Al-Thuwaini “We are looking at the future students. We want to make it (AUK) a better place and make this a role model of the student body” – Bader Al Asfoor

A Letter To Mr. Valentine

By Latifa Al Qallaf Dear Mr. Valentine, This is a letter from Latifa Al-Qallaf and Sarah Zaeed discussing your special day. On the behalf of all the females in the world, I would like to begin by thanking you very much for giving us the 14th of February. I don’t know if you know this but we call it Valentine’s day now, after you. It is supposedly the most romantic day of year. It’s a day in which people celebrate romance in the best of ways, sadly however that is only in some places. In my Kuwaiti society it’s a totally different story. I don’t know about the others but in my culture most men dread Valentine’s Day. We noticed six different reactions: • The first type of men, are the men, when their girl hints about valentine’s day approaching, they simply eliminate it by saying, “Valentine’s day is not in my culture, my mum and dad have been married for 35 years now and they never celebrated valentines. Who’s that? What’s that? How about you be a sweetheart and make us some food?” • The second type of men, he simply travels on valentines. No discussion needed, I mean I know if I was him I would rather book a ticket for 200KD than buy bag for 2000KD. • The thirds guy, “babe, I’m allergic to valentine’s day.” • The fourth guy, is the worst type, “hey babe why are you wearing red today? Is it valentines or something? OMG it is valentines, I’m so sorry babe I totally forgot.” • The fifth guy, is the funniest of all, he expects the girl to get him a gift too. When the time comes he goes like “let’s exchange gifts!” He gets out his gift and she loves it, then looks at her like a hungry puppy waiting for his, she goes like “I’m your gift?” his face transforms (-___-), “give me ma gift back.” • Or the sad guys, who were the happiest with more than one girlfriend, it backfires on valentines, his bank account starts to decline half way through. He also has to see them all in one day. Poor, poor him.

38

Of course I’m not talking about all men. Some men (the rarely existing ones) love their girls on Valentine’s Day. They get the full package, flowers chocolates and gifts and a day fully spent with her. #LUCKY. What most men don’t get is that what we look for in Valentine’s Day is not the gift or its price, its them being truly romantic and cherishing us. Just show us their love.* How is that too much to ask for? ~innocent blink~ * <<<such a female line I know but, for example if I was going to get a valentines gift I would rather get flowers with a cute thoughtful letter, than an expensive bag that I would wear once or twice. Do you know what I’m saying Mr Valentine, it seems like you’re the only man who gets it. Yours truly, The Defenders of Romance

Student Diwaniya Topic of the Month

Keep Calm and Celebrate Kuwait's festive month is finally here! February is a month that many of us look forward to in Kuwait for slightly different reasons. There is a lot going on and, because of that, it passes in a blink of an eye. Whether it’s “Hala February”, “National Day”, or “Liberation Day” here in Kuwait, or even Valentine’s Day it’s all happening in February. There is something for everyone throughout this month and, therefore, many will want to celebrate. Who’s stopping you? “Hala February” begins and adds that extra “life” into the country. All shops go on major sales as the people of Kuwait plan their outings to the malls with their families and friends. Furthermore, they decorate the outside of their houses with the colors of their beloved country while it becomes very common to find a huge Kuwaiti flag hung outside of the buildings. Roads such as Salem Al Mubarak are closed down in order to hold festivals to celebrate this month and this wonderful occasion as people at home tune into their televisions to watch the celebrations. “Hala February” is really a time that many of the citizens here look forward to and it’s great to see how the country celebrates these amazing deals and festivities throughout the month. Valentine’s Day is a day to spend with your loved ones as many people reserve a table at one of the nicer restaurants in Kuwait in order to go on a romantic dinner. Gifts are given, many of the restaurants make small adjustments to their atmosphere to incorporate the Valentine’s spirit, and you’re able to go out on a nice and memorable dinner with your loved ones on the night. Time is spent together and, as they say, “love is in the air” across the country.

‫ديوانية الطلبة موضوع الشهر‬

The month nears its end with people celebrating on the streets and having the time of their lives with the “National Day” and “Liberation Day” arriving. This is the 65th anniversary of the National Day, which will be on February 25 while Liberation Day, on the 26th of February, will be the 24th anniversary! Roads close, cars park on the roads and people celebrate in the streets as it’s truly a beautiful thing to witness. Many others decide to leave the country as they get time off in order to visit another place whether it’s Dubai, Lebanon, or the United States! For the people who don’t want to be in the middle of all the celebrations in Kuwait, you can see them wearing the Kuwaiti colors and watching from afar as the water guns take over the streets while others retaliate with foam-sprays. Cars are painted and sprayed to celebrate the holidays with the colors of Kuwait and quotes to show their love for the country in beautiful and creative ways. The happiness and the smiles are something great to witness as everyone shares the same emotion whether it was children or grandparents. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to the way they want to celebrate but they all share the same pride and happiness whether it’s for their own country or the country that they have been able to call ‘home’. All worries are put aside towards the end of the month as their focus on simply on showing their love for Kuwait. With all that being said and done, we need to keep in mind that safety always comes first. This is not to say that celebrations should not occur but rather we should keep it as a celebration rather than letting anything dangerous happen. Water-guns, Foam, balloons, and all those are great fun and are an amazing addition to the celebrations but they will only stay that way as long as we can use them in a safe manner. It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. So, let’s go out and have the time of our lives in this celebratory month. Celebrate your hearts out, enjoy every possible moment of it, and make sure to make it worthwhile and memorable. Keep calm and celebrate!

Making Kuwait Proud Active Students

Abdullah 'Bufifty' Bukhamseen

Kuwait's graffiti world uncovered Graffiti? Though most of us are quite familiar with the concept, we don’t really know what it’s really all about! One of the great graffiti artists in Kuwait, “Bufifty” was able to share his thoughts with STUDENTALK as we take a look into the colorful world of graffiti through his thoughts. So, if you want to know what graffiti is all about, look no further! Tell us more about your love for graffiti. I have been drawing since I was a kid. I always tried different types of art: Portraits, fine art, abstract, even sculpting. But what drew me most to graffiti when I tried it out is that you use your whole body to make the art itself and not just your hands or arms. So, I think that’s what excited me the most and what made me feel the art. When you make a line on a page, it’s different than when you make a line on a wall. Once you got into graffiti, how did you decide that this is what you want to keep doing? Graffiti, generally, is a new art form when compared to most fine arts. I think that starting something new and exposing this type of art is what I find really interesting. Especially because of the fact that it really connects with the people when you make a piece of art on a public space and you see how people react to it and how they look at it. Anyone can see a realistic picture of an apple, and say, “yeah, that’s cool” but when they see a ten meter wall that’s three-meters high with something really new to them, they really react differently. Do you face any problems with drawing on a public space? We do. Generally, I draw legally. But, even with legal permits, we still get harassed by officials so we would have official papers from the building itself and the organization. People, such as passerby’s, who don’t fully understand the art itself would call the police on us. On a normal day, the police would probably come to us approximately three times. We know how to talk to them and what exactly to say so it’s no problem. We learned how to handle the situation. Is drawing something that you still do though? Definitely, I still love all art forms to be honest. I chose to venture in the graffiti world because once you develop your art sense in other types of art, your main style gets even better. When I practice still-life art, my shades and lighting in graffiti becomes better and more realistic and more dynamic. If you had to choose your proudest work, what would it be and why? It would definitely be participating in the Guinness World Records for the longest graffiti in the world in Dubai.

42

It was such an amazing experience and I was honored to be chosen among artists from all over the world. It was about 150 artists and we broke the record. It was a collaborative work among artists to work on something we love and to make history. The wall was 2.245 kilometers and took about three days. How do you come up with the ideas about what you want to draw? It depends. Sometimes we work on a specific message that we want to send to the public. Other times it is something comical that people can relate to. Sometimes it’s timespecific; for example we choose a word that is in peoples’ minds now and might change in the future. Most of the time, we just want to make art and have fun. Do you see yourself continuing this in the future? Of course. Any artist who is into his own art considers it as a lifestyle. Even if he’s very busy, he will always find time.

‫فخر الطلبة الطلبة األكثر نشاط ًا‬

Not a day goes by in my life where, at least once a day, I hold a paper and a pen and scribble a line at least. It’s a way for me to relax and it’s not only something that I want to continue in my life but I also want to develop it and for it to grow with me. Other than Dubai, do you do anything outside of Kuwait? Yes, I visited Jeddah in Saudi Arabia where they managed to host a worldwide event called “Meeting of Styles” where artists gather around from all over the world in a location and just blast the walls. It’s a gathering of artists to produce something nice, learn from each other, to see different and new things. There are super talented graffiti artists in Saudi Arabia and they encouraged us to take a step forward here in Kuwait. The “Dhad Family” managed to bring it to Saudi for the first time and we really wanted to make something out of it. Who do you look up to for inspiration? There are a lot of people in the graffiti world. They really push the limits. An Australian artist called Sofles, another artist called Digital Does. There are a lot!

Can you explain the idea behind you becoming the exclusive distributor of Montana Cans in Kuwait? So, back in 1996, graffiti writers decided that they wanted to make spray cans that is especially manufactured for graffiti. So, the company started off in Germany, supporting graffiti writers from all over the world. They developed and started manufacturing and made their sprays more weather and water proof. Montana Gold and Black, for example, are different. The gold is low pressure, the black is high pressure. The gold is for detailing and canvas work while the black is high pressure and used for large spaces such as filling in huge letters. There is so much more than it just being a spray can. The way you spray and the pressure of your finger all makes a difference. There are 196 different colors that are all available and myself and my partner Yousef “Joegraffi” Al Saleh are the official distributors of Montana Cans in Kuwait.

Anything else that you would like to add? Yes. The difference between vandalism and graffiti; a lot of people think that graffiti is vandalism but it isn’t. Vandalism is going to any public or sacred place and basically writing or drawing on it without permission and has no purpose. Graffiti is about connecting with the people and it is more exposed to the public. We use graffiti because we want to revive a dead-space. We want to make our country more beautiful and send a positive message. People need to understand that. Even when we have permission, people still assume that it is vandalism. It’s okay but takes time for it to grow on people since it’s a relatively new introduction here. With more exposure people are getting more accepting to it, there has already been a huge change so hopefully it increases even more in the future. And last but not least, a shout out to all of the great graffiti writers Joegraffi, Kelsix, Monstariam, Mayya, Nizzy and Blacklightme and much more who are helping the graffiti scene grow in Kuwait.

What advice can you give aspiring graffiti artists? A lot of graffiti artists think that graffiti is all about the name. It’s not so much about the name as much as it is about the art form itself. My advice is to keep sketching, keep developing your own style. You can always look up to other people and learn from them but never do it for just the reputation of blasting a wall. Most importantly, do it because you love it. Contact Info: @MontanaCansKW

Kuwait's Education

The transformation in Kuwait's education since 1965 Before oil was found in Kuwait, education wasn’t considered very important as reading and writing the Quran was considered to be the main priority in the country. Today, that has completely changed as Kuwait has become one of the leaders of education in the Gulf region. Many may not know this but 1965 was a major year in the history of Kuwait as they became the first Arab country to make education mandatory among its citizens. From that day onwards, Kuwait has become a leader in education and has been able to build some great schools, universities and other educational facilities to further assist the people of the country. Of course, it wasn’t a surprising decision as the years before that have led to the decision being made. With time, Kuwait increased the importance of education and, when the decision was finally made in 1965, things were able to move a lot more quickly and efficiently. The growth of Education since 1965 is something that cannot go unnoticed in Kuwait. The Ministry of Education has worked hard throughout all these years in order to make this country capable of offering some of the best education in the Arab world. The United States are known for the education that they offer and Kuwait has acknowledged that by having some of the known Universities affiliate the Universities in Kuwait, such as the American University of Kuwait (AUK). Kuwait now offers many types of different International schools such as American, British, French and Indian while they also offer education in the public sector as well. This way, they have been able to please all types of citizens and expats who want to move here since the diversity has helped many settle in quite well. Furthermore, this same diversity has also helped the parents move in because of the schools that are offered here as they can still feel comfortable with the teaching curriculum in, for example, the American school. Kuwait has been able to make it a mission for themselves to build schools in various areas. Nowadays, it’s actually become difficult to go through an area, such as Jabriya or Khaldiya, and not be able to find a school there. This way, they have also assisted the citizens in choosing their homes because it is no longer a major problem to try picking a place of residence and having to think about the distance it is from the school.

46

‫قسم خاص‬

Of course, some families would rather have a further school because they feel that the specific school would give their children the education they want, but there will always be a school relatively close to you no matter where you choose to live. Kuwait is blossoming in the educational sector and it’s very clear to see why. Many high school students, who once dreamed of going to the foreign countries, have decided to stay and further their education here. The universities here offer many opportunities for the students and they have a wide range to choose from. They enroll in the Universities knowing that they will be getting high education while also being able to live the “University life” in terms of the extra-curricular activities that are offered within each campus. Whether they want to join the various sports teams or the different University clubs, there is something for everyone to make help them make a difference. There is no denying the fact that opting to stay in Kuwait for higher education is very different than going to other countries as many have voiced their opinions when it comes to staying in their country of citizenship but, sometimes, the positives are overlooked. The curriculum offered in the universities here are top quality while the students are able to mingle and roam around in a setting that they are familiar and comfortable with. Furthermore, the private universities offer major diversification as it is very easy to find people from various countries and cultures interacting with one another on a daily basis. The decision that was taken in 1965 has drastically changed Kuwait in a very positive way and, because of that, we are still able to see traces of it today. Kuwait is growing massively in the educational sector and it continues to find new and innovative ways to continue its ability to provide the citizens with the type of education that they want and deserve. From the second their parents choose the school that they will be entering until the day they graduate with higher education, they can keep in mind that they are receiving some of the highest education offered in the world as they can move on to other countries being assured that they have learnt everything they need in order to survive outside when it comes to the educational sector or even the workplace.

Talent Competition

Which Musician

Will win the ''Most Talented''

Competition?

Tell us more about yourself I’m Samer Abou Zeid and I’m a Management major at AUK with a minor in Marketing. I have been in the field of music and drama since I was 13. I have been in talent shows since I was 15-years-old. I play the “tabla”, an Arabic instrument, as my main instrument and I collect a new instrument every year. I have played the saxophone for about a year now and am looking forward to continue in music and drama after graduation.

What is your talent? When it comes to music, there are a few instruments that I can play. For this Talent Competition, I will be playing the saxophone. Since I plan to learn a new instrument every year, the saxophone was one of my latest picks and I absolutely fell in love with it. It’s an instrument that not many people play and it’s very different to anything that I have played before.

How did you develop your talent? When I decided to play the saxophone, I took a Jazz course in University and, since then, I have kept on practicing my talent. I have fallen in love with the instrument and am always aiming to dedicate some time to learning new things and mastering the saxophone even more with time. I still have more to learn but it’s going greatly so far. What are your future plans? In terms of the future, I plan to do my Masters in Arts Management and Event Planning. Also, I want to continue working on my music and drama throughout the upcoming years and hopefully I will be able to reach new levels with them. Who supported your talent? There are many people who supported my talent once I started playing the saxophone. My friends, whether at University or outside, have really helped me and supported me throughout this journey. My family, as always, supported me and helped me out with whatever it was that I needed. Finally, there were faculty at the University who helped me and taught me a lot through this journey so far. Did you encounter any obstacles? It was hard for me to find a tutor or someone to teach me until I was lucky enough to find out that it was offered in University last semester. It was my first time playing the saxophone. Also, places to practice is hard to find usually because the saxophone is a very loud instrument.

Samer Abou Zeid

Any last words for the readers? Saxophone is something I just picked up but my main passion is the “tabla”. I usually take mainstream English songs and add to it. Bear with me with the saxophone and I hope that you enjoy the upcoming show!

Tell us more about yourself Well, my name is Khalid Abdulbasit and I’m 18 years old/ I’m currently studying engineering at the American University of Kuwait and I have a hope to become a well-known and respected musician in the musical world.

really enjoyed playing it for a while. Eventually, I knew I had a passion for guitars, and decided to move it from the computer screen to real life and master it. So far, it has been a wonderful decision and I continue to learn something new everyday.

What is your talent? My talent is playing the guitar. I’ve discovered my passion for it when I used to play a lot of computer games actually. I found a game which involved music and guitars in it and I

How did you develop your talent? I started when I was 14 years of age. I tried different music teachers at the beginning, but I realized that I would learn much better on my own because I was able to learn everything at my own pace, so I continued developing

and learning how to play the guitar on my own. I found myself gradually becoming a better guitarist by the day, and becoming the musician I hope to be. With time, I hope that I can improve this talent of mine. What are your future plans? My plan is to improve personally on my guitar skills until it leads me to send my music to thousands of people in worldwide stages someday and also improve my band which is ‘’No Place to Play’’ to actually play shows where people who appreciate music can enjoy and fall in love with the music that we are able to play. Who supported your talent? My family was the first to support my talent. My friends on the other hand, supported me from the beginning in every way possible, motivating me and helping me get better and better. Also, after that, I found a lot of surprising feedback from people on the social media, and that motivated me to continue doing what I do Did you encounter any obstacles? At the beginning, the only obstacle I had was high school. I had this strong passion for music, but at the same time I had a high school degree which I had to take, and good marks to achieve. It was quite difficult for me to mix both of them together at the time. Other than that, I didn’t face any obstacles which stopped my journey in music and it became easier for me to make time now in University.

Khalid Abdulbasit

Any last words for the readers? I encourage the readers to search for their talent in every field, and when they finally do, they must make sure to give that talent a good hold and never give up on it, no matter what obstacles or difficulties they may face. It may get really difficult at times but there is no easy road to success.

Well, why does junk food have to be a part of our gatherings? There are some great and healthy options that will fill your appetite yet also keep away that feeling of guiltiness! There are some delicious meals that could be made for gatherings and you can guarantee that everyone will be enjoying it. Here are five healthy options to have at your next gathering:

1

Shrimp Cocktail: This could possibly be the best appetizer out there! With the sidedip salsa, you can’t really go wrong here. Shrimps give you the needed proteins and therefore you’re satisfied for a long time. Plus, who doesn’t like shrimp?

3

Vegetables & Dip: This is a safe option when it comes to munching. While talking to friends, having this in the middle table will keep you reaching for more with no guiltiness involved! This is a must-have at the gathering.

4

Mixed Nuts: Of course, make sure they’re not over-salted or honey-roasted and it’s all good! A few small scoops can help with vitamins, fiber and protein in order to keep you full. This is yet another wonderful option for your gatherings.

Guacamole: Guacamole is something that many of us are familiar with and it’s mainly considered healthy because of the avocado included in it. It is loaded with heart-healthy fats and valuable nutrients and can decrease your levels of bad cholesterol.

5

Fruit & Cheese: Cheese may not be the best choice for you but it’s still a good option to have, preferably cheddar cheese with some healthy fruits such as apples. No need to get too crazy on them but it’s a nice idea to have on the side.

Jack Wills' New Spring Collection Smart dressing and smart thinking from one of Britain's smartest, fun brands

FASHION For Him & Her

The youthful DNA of this thoroughly British brand has been dialled up with intelligence, wit and style by its new creative director, Richard Nicoll. The range has now been broadened and a cohesive, considered collection has emerged, with the introduction of more versatile and timeless options for menswear and womanswear.

MEN:

WOMEN:

For this menswear collection, Richard studied British Youth sub-cultural periods from the 1960’s Youth Quake through to the 90’s Brit pop. He also studied Hockney, Bridget Rilet and Op Art Paintings while also listening to Blur, The Happy Mondays and the Beatles. With these all in his history, he was able to bring the colour and energy from both periods together and inject the Jack Wills hero products with a sense of youthful fun and playfulness.

Under Nicoll’s precision and polish, the range has been broadened and a cohesive, considered, collection has emerged, with the introduction of more versatile and timeless options for menswear and womenswear.

The result is an irreverent, optimistic and uniquely British collection, packed full of energy and graphic colour pops. Hiking references abound in the colour blocked anoraks, while more tech details transform the classic ‘heritage’ pieces, resulting in a thoroughly modern and smart collection. Key menswear pieces include the ‘Hockney’ rugby tops, customised denim jackets, heritage sweatshirt graphics and colour blocked anoraks. Highlights include the herringbone Crombie coat worn with sweat pants and a new take on the bomber jacket in signature Jack Wills navy with pink customisable patches.

70

For the Spring womenswear collection, Richard studied British Youth sub cultural periods from the 1960’s Youth Quake, through to 90’s Brit pop. Key womenswear pieces to note include a bubble gum pink mac, herringbone and velvet swing coats and pea coats, an optical rugby dress (inspired by a specific Twiggy reference), as well as practical and outrageously fun plastic rainwear. Customisation patches also feature, encouraging the sense of individuality that is so key for the brand.

Rendez-Vous Collection

This is when invention meets creativity Watches

Women have a date with time. With their own time. On their wrist is the new Jaeger-LeCoultre: Rendez-Vous. More than a watch, it embodies a free-spirited and spontaneous personality that is constantly reinvented and perpetually surprising. More than a watch, an encounter. A state of mind.

Its femininity is conveyed through every detail of its graceful silhouette. The perfectly matched case and dial provide the perfect backdrop for the mechanical movement. The automatic calibre entirely developed, crafted and assembled in the Jaeger-LeCoultre workshops stages a day/ night indicator amid a hand-guilloché décor reflecting the finest Haute Horlogerie traditions. Time serenely takes its place, bathed in the glow of the diamond-set bezel that illuminates each passing moment. The time of the Rendez-Vous is set. Is the eye drawn to the soft relief of the guilloché pattern, dazzled by the sparkle of the diamonds, or captivated by the slow dance of day and night? Each woman has her own answer… But rather than a single feature, it is the entire set of details of the Rendez-Vous watch that invite women to assume full ownership of an object that matches their character. Like women themselves, the Rendez-Vous watch makes light of conventions. An actress with its finger firmly on the beat of time, it grasps each moment with authentic fervour. A loyal daily companion, it sets the scene for everyday life in a fascinatingly masterful and confident style.

UEFA Champions League

Football's biggest competition is back! It doesn’t really get a lot bigger than the UEFA Champions League if you’re a football fan. This is the biggest title you can win in club football as everyone has their preference on teams with debates going around in the everyday discussions. This is the competition where European teams are able to show who’s really the best overall and they fight harder than ever before. With the next round set to begin soon, we take a look at the fixtures and what to expect. Schalke 04 (Germany) VS Real Madrid (Spain): Schalke will be playing against the holders of the competition, Real Madrid, in a game where they are seen as major underdogs. Real Madrid are favorites to win this competition again and therefore, they will really want to make a statement against the German team. I see Real Madrid making it through but they will be very cautious not to underestimate Schalke.

Real Madrid - Current holders of the Cup

FC Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) VS Bayern Munich (Germany): Shakhtar Donetsk are the clear underdogs in this fixture but they have been able to come out with some great performances during the group stages. Now, they face some stiff competition from one of the favorites of this tournament, Bayern Munich. The German team is already way ahead in their respective league and therefore, they can put their concentration on the upcoming fixture. I predict an easy win for Bayern Munich as they continue their amazing form.

Manchester City (England) VS Barcelona (Spain): This is considered to be arguably the biggest game of the upcoming round and it sees two of the European greats go head-to-head. Although Manchester City have not been able to be amajor threat in this competition for recent years, they will definitely want to change that against Barcelona. With that said, it’s quite difficult to see them making it through against a Barcelona team that seem to improve every week.

Sergio Agüero

78

FC Basel (Switzerland) VS FC Porto (Portugal): This game will be finding itself under the radar with some of the bigger clubs facing each other in the competition, but that shouldn’t mean that these two teams should be ignored. Both teams have some great players and are able to cause a shock in this tournament. FC Porto will be seen as the favorites in this match but Basel will not be making it easy on them whatsoever.

‫أخبار رياضة‬

Paris Saint-Germain (France) VS Chelsea (England): This is one fixture you will need to keep your eyes on as Paris Saint-Germain will be taking on Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side. Both clubs have a lot to prove in this tie and will definitely be making a massive statement if they are able to get through to the next round. I see Chelsea as the winners here but don’t be surprised if it ends up being PSG making it through in the tournament. Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) VS Atletico Madrid (Spain): Atletico Madrid defied all odds last season as they were crowned the Champions of Spain and were runners-up in the UEFA Champions League. They have proven themselves not to be a one-season miracle as they continue to fight in all competitions this season. As for Bayer Leverkusen, they have had their ups and downs and, to be honest, it’s going to be a very difficult match against Atletico and it will be a shock to see them making it through.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Juventus (Italy) VS Borussia Dortmund (Germany) Both teams go into this fixture with a lot to prove, but for different reasons. Juventus haven’t been a major European threat in recent seasons and they feel as though this is the year to change that. As for Dortmund, they are going through an extremely difficult time in the league and therefore will want to make amends in this competition. This is an extremely tough one to call but it seems as though Juventus will be the ones making it through. Arsenal (England) VS AS Monaco (France): After losing two of their best players during the summer, Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez, AS Monaco have lost a lot of their attacking power. As for Arsenal, they have actually gained power with their signing of Alexis Sanchez. With that mainly in mind, I see Arsenal as slightly comfortable winners in this round of the tournament.

Touristic Destinations in Kuwait

Looking for new places to visit? Well, here are some ideas!

Kuwait has many exceptional places to visit as its towers and museums have always been great touristic attractions for many people. Also, if you’re a citizen of Kuwait and you feel as though you have visited all the places possible, I can almost guarantee you that this is not the case! Here are some of the best places that you need to see whether you’re visiting Kuwait or living here and trying to find something new to do!

The Kuwait Towers: Located on the Gulf Road, the Kuwait Towers are probably the main attraction and have become a symbol of this beautiful country. This is certainly a place that you will need to visit as it is a landmark of Kuwait and contains so much history behind it.

80

Al Kout Beach: Looking for a nice day of relaxation? Well, Kuwait boasts a spectacular setting on the Persian Gulf, with some of the Middle East's most magnificent coastline stretching for about 499 kilometers. Kuwait beaches offer a great place to relax by scenic waters with a large number of Beach clubs and public beaches.

Doha Village Kuwait: Doha Village is a place to visit for those interested in gaining some information about the glorious trading history of Kuwait. Doha Village was famous for construction of fishing and dhows units during the past. Therefore, visiting Doha Village is like returning to history of Kuwait. Visitors get to view the dhows and boats manufacturing units. Traditional miniatures of dhows are sold to collectors and tourists here. This is a MUST for the history fans!

‫تسلية سياحة‬

Failaka Island: Failaka Island is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Kuwait. Located along the northern part of Persian Gulf, 20 kilometers away from Kuwait City, and situated opposite to the Failaka Bay, it is one of the most important islands in Kuwait. Failaka Island is linked to Kuwait City through submarine pipeline that supplies water to inhabitants of Failaka. It is a magnificent island that easily blends ancient history of Kuwait with gleaming modernity. The Grand Mosque: Located in the heart of the city, the Grand Mosque is the biggest and the official Mosque of Kuwait, which means that official religious celebrations are held in this mosque only. Locals refer to it as “Al-Masjid Al-Kabir” with a total area of 46,000 square meters. The Grand Mosque is internationally renowned for its Islamic architecture and it has become one of Kuwait's most treasured landmarks.

The House of Mirrors: Many people, even those who reside in Kuwait, are not completely aware of ‘The House of Mirrors’. However, this is really an incredible wealth of art and it is definitely worth the visit! This House of Mirrors belongs to Khalifa and Lidia Al-Qattan and it’s now considered a museum as the wife of the renowned Kuwaiti artist has turned their house into a work of art using broken pieces of glass to decorate the exterior and interior. Located in Qadsiya, the house is still a private property so appointments have to be made prior for weekday visits. The Kuwait National Museum: The Kuwait National Museum is a true representation of the Kuwaiti heritage and it is located on the Arabian Gulf Street between the Seif Palace and National Assembly. Designed by French architect Michel Ecochard, visitors can enjoy this historical museum, which represent the Kuwaiti life in the past, their everyday activities, the rich trading history of Kuwait and its traditions. This is a wonderful place to visit in order to learn more about the lifestyle in Kuwait and how it has evolved over the years.

Tareq Rajab Museum: There is nothing more exciting than getting completely submerged in history and transported back in time by visiting a museum. The Tareq Rajab Museum is one of Kuwait’s small-scale distinct personal museums and is a fantastic place to engage and enjoy in Kuwait. The Tareq Rajab collection is the private collection of antiquities by Kuwait's first Minister Tareq Sayed Rajab and his wife Jehan Wellborne, which include Islamic Arts, metal and glass works, Treasures of Ceramics, Gold and Silver jewelry, costumes of sheikhs and shepherds, English costumes, Bahraini pearls, pottery, metalwork, glass, masonry, manuscripts, and musical instruments. The Scientific Center: Located in Salmiya, The Scientific Center is the center for environmental education in the Gulf region. Being inherited by late Sheikh Jaber AlAhmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Scientific Center in Kuwait (KSC) spans across more than 80,000 square meters of area. Established along the waterfront, the building is designed to reflect the Islamic arts and culture. The KSC has three main attractions – the Aquarium, Discovery Palace, and the IMAX Cinema. Apart from this, there is also the Dhow Harbour located directly on the waterfront. It also has coffee shops, gift shops, and a food court, along with a walkway that shows more scenic views of the coastline in Kuwait.

Your energy will not let you down as it will continue through this month. With that said, you’re more than willing to just sit back and relax as a massive party really isn’t your cup of tea. Gatherings and get-togethers will be your choices for the month.

You want to start something new and this is the perfect chance! It’s a new month and therefore a new page. If you’re not a party person, try it out! You’ll be able to let go and have a great time while leaving your worries behind.

Jump on any opportunity that comes your way as your creativity is at its peak right now. That “New Years Resolution” you did a month ago may prove to be very worthwhile. You don’t usually enjoy big celebrations but there is no reason not to give it a go with some friends.

This may prove to be a difficult month for you but use that as an opportunity to be stronger and prove to yourself that you’re capable of coming through. With that said, celebrate your achievements with a few close friends and make it a month to remember.

Optimism and positivity are all around you this month and you should use that in order to keep your mood up and have a great time. Looking forward to a celebration? Go ahead because you will definitely be the life of the party!

Opportunities and new experiences will be on their way to you. Experiencing them will help you come out as an even stronger person. You enjoy small gatherings and should take full advantage of that with a few friends or family during the month.

Getting things done may prove to be a more difficult experience than usual so keep an eye out for that. Focus on the important things and you’ll find that it was worth it later on. Parties aren’t the best choice for the month but there is no reason to organize get-togethers with people to help you out.

Things have been difficult for you recently and now it’s finally time to relax. It is now time for you to have some fun and celebrate!

This month is simply going to be another learning experience for you and you’ll be more than prepared to take on the challenges coming your way. Think about it like this: Once you’re done with overcoming this, it’ll be worth celebrating and remembering!

Passion and intensity are two of the best ways to describe your mood this month. You may even find yourself obsessing over some things at times. It’s not a problem though as this intensity will make you the life of the parties you go to this month!

This is a great time for you to focus on your work and what’s important. It will prove to be an amazing experience and, let’s be honest here, there isn’t really a better feeling than celebrating your success. Make it memorable and, of course, fun!

You have a lot of dreams and sometimes it may take you a little far from reality but don’t let that get to you whatsoever! These dreams could one day become a reality. Dreaming of a big party with your friends? Make that a reality as well!
