Dear Students, I’ve always been fascinated by the human brain; how it tirelessly never ceases to function. So much so that it sometimes overloads and burdens us to a point where we need to find a release - a friend to talk to; a group of strangers to share some thoughts with; or an empty page on which to unleash it all. Throughout my life I have been taking to the empty page. Maybe this is the source of my passion for print media and the start of my career. But throughout my life, I have been publishing other people’s words and views, restraining myself to writing my monthly letter, a task that I always look forward to... Then one day I woke up and decided, “I am going to write a book”. I wanted to encapsulate my thoughts in a format that would be more enduring than a conversation, so I set forth writing, and writing... and rewriting… debating with every new word just how much I should reveal... and then I started wondering how can I write about my life without referring to others who are or were part of my life? And what right do I have to talk about other people’s lives! But it is not about them. Truly!

It is about me. My thoughts and the human struggles that I had to go through and evolve from, the thoughts that I want to share with you so I may, I hope, be that helping hand in the darkest of hours… reminding you… life is indeed illogical to all of us, and we all need to find our own logic to keep it bearable.
CREATIVE TEAM Graphic Designer Tarek Kabbani tarek@ph7-kw.com
And here was my final dilemma: how do I get my thoughts across without burdening you with their heaviness.
IT Developer Nidal Shehadeh digital@ph7-kw.com
HUMOR! Yes. After a year of trying various styles from plays, to abstract, to detailed autobiography I finally decided to attempt an original representation of my thoughts through humor and wit, equations and illustrations, contradictions and contrasts… where amidst all you will find parts of me... and parts of yourselves…. As I am preparing for the launch of my first book, “The Illogical Logic Of My Life”, I have butterflies in my stomach... True, I have lived my life as an open book but then again...the book was never before written. So, My Students, wish me luck, and leave me your comments at www.facebook.com/ IllogicalLogicbyZeina I need your support, Till next issue,

@alichaaban
Not Your Usual Contemporary Artist Ali Chaaban is a very familiar name amongst us in Kuwait and that is because of his unique art that he has been able to share with us. Back in 2008, he began this great journey and he has been able to make it through until today as he displays many of his art pieces in various parts in the region. STUDENTALK was able to get a look into how he has been able to begin this wonderful journey and how things are today. Tell us a little bit of who you are and how you got into this profession. I’m a Senior Art Director in the BBDO Network and a part-time artist but I’m more passionate about the latter of course. Kinda like an Artist by day and a Superhero by night. The way that I got into the art scene goes back to 2008, when I first experimented with digital art. However, my breakthrough was in 2013 when I displayed my work at LoudArt in Khobar, It has opened a lot of doors for me, from art collectors buying my work to showcasing at Ayyam Gallery. What is your favorite type of art? Contemporary art, of course; I used to be a pop art fanatic, but as I matured with my work the notion of art to me has evolved, differed I might add. While pop art is more about aesthetics, contemporary art is all about the message, at least in my opinion, it carries a message a manner of which the viewer is affected. If you had to choose a favorite art piece, which would it be and why? That’s probably the hardest question to an artist. But I’d have to say “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living” (1991) by Damien Hirst The concept of that piece is mind-staggering. The artwork is basically: Glass, painted steel, silicone, monofilament, an actual shark and formaldehyde solution. It has become embedded in popular culture as one of the most iconic images of contemporary art. Hirst’s intention was to force the viewer out of their element by introducing into a gallery setting, a shark that was “real enough to frighten you.” How do you get your inspiration for your art pieces? Culture inspires me. Modern events and issues inspire artists. Meeting new people, conversations, sociopolitical events and cultural paradigms create the message that the artists wants to introduce to their viewers. Who do you look up to for inspiration? Ahmed Mater, co-founder of Edge of Arabia. He’s the artist behind Evolution of Man and The Yellow Cow, the latter being one of the most iconic pieces of Arabic contemporary art.
18
قصة الغالف
Ahmed Mater himself, in my opinion, is one of the greatest Arabic contemporary artists in our modern time. Where do you showcase your work? I’ve showcased my work regionally, in Khobar with the LoudArt platform; Mark Hachem Gallery, Beirut; and Ayyam Gallery, Jeddah. Soon, I’ll be showcasing my work in Kuwait as it’s been 5 years since I last displayed any of my work in Kuwait. What do you like to do on the side other than working on your art? I’m a healthy person, I like to work on being fit, I’m constantly trying new techniques of training but my only problem is that I get bored real quick. I’m more focused now on being fit with the Puma IGNITE campaign, which was a 21-Days challenge to run 10K and constantly breaking your own record. How do you feel the fashion industry has been in Kuwait in recent years? Kuwait is a fashion-conscious society, they’re well aware of the latest trends and the latest styles; but when I worked abroad I’ve realized that’s not the case. Understanding the New York street style, and the heavily influential Paris street style proved something more profound. Fashion nowadays is how you look different from the crowd, more futuristic
from the crowd, and this is what I like Kuwait trendsetters to aspire to. Who do you follow for the latest trends in fashion? People think I do, but I don’t. I honestly don’t follow trends, but if I ever have to name some people, I’d say Raf Simons is a fashion genius and Kanye West is an iconic trendsetter. What would you say is your favorite quote? “Laugh and grow fat.” Fat being the philosophical happiness, and not the weight gain, so we’re clear. Do what makes you happy; what makes you, you. Tell us more about your shopping experience at H&M - & how does it reflect on your personal style?” H&M is my go to shop. I’ll always be able to find an item or two in mind that I’m looking for. Whether edgy or safe, H&M will always offer clothes that’ll cater to your style. Mine is grungy or sort of black on black; loose and oversized, and I’ve never found it difficult there. Last words for our readers? Think differently, don’t be one dimensional, aspire to be more than what your generation is capitalized by. This photoshoot took place at @masaha13

H&M Conscious
Olivia Wilde shows sustainable style with Conscious Exclusive at H&M
H&M’s new Conscious Exclusive collection shows what can be done with more sustainable materials, using fabrics such as hemp, organic linen and organic leather to create pieces of great individual style. The collection, worn exclusively by actress and humanitarian Olivia Wilde in the campaign, will be available in around 200 H&M stores worldwide, as well as online, from April 16. This year’s Conscious Exclusive collection takes inspiration from around the planet, with a focus on the versatility of the dress. An organic linen and silk sleeveless gown with a glamorous shape is printed with hand-drawn images of birds. A black cocktail dress is made from Tencel and recycled wool, with an African influence in its embellished rows of recycled sequins. Meanwhile, a sleeveless cocktail dress has a print inspired by Japanese ink, and is made from organic hemp, organic silk and organic cotton. Each piece in the collection is special, whether it’s the bomber jacket made from a Tencel jacquard - whichis like the reverse of a jacquard, with threads intentionally left loose - or the organic silk tuxedo blazer that is slashed to the elbow to create a dramatic effect. The use of more sustainable materials is varied and comprehensive, from the recycled beads on a flapper dress, to the organic leather used for a minimalist leather jacket and the stackheeled sandals. “I love the Conscious Exclusive collection at H&M, both for the look, and also for its ethics. This is how all fashion should be: great style that’s naturally more sustainable,” says Olivia Wilde. “I love the global influences in this Conscious Exclusive collection and the beauty of the hand-drawn prints made by one of our talented in-house designers. And Olivia Wilde is the perfect choice for this collection, sharing with H&M a commitment to a more sustainable future,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor H&M.

It’s not about brands; it’s about how you look. I think people respect others based on how they look. People in Kuwait think “BRANDS” not fashion.
Probably through colors, depends on the message. People in Kuwait are not very accepting in terms of clothes, so people who try to send a message through fashion might be criticized.
Fashion should suit the social context in which you are attending. I feel that some people show off in public when it comes to fashion. Wear what makes you comfortable, don’t follow trends.
It all depends on my mood and if I feel like expressing myself by showing what I like through my clothes. Sometimes I just want to be normal.

Fashion can be better used when people dress according to how they feel.
I feel happy when I see people all dressed up tidy. And I want them to feel the same when they look at me. I feel good on the inside, so I express it through fashion.
Fashion expresses a person’s feelings; it also gives a clear idea about the personality. People like fashion but not to make a statement, they just show off.
I dress to express my personality; my personality differs every day. About people in Kuwait, I feel they care about fashion because reputation is important.
IN THIS SECTION We give the students of Kuwait a platform from which to express their beliefs on the matters that affect them. Here, students get the opportunity to voice their opinions, whilst allowing others to hear them out.

AUKause Tackling Each Cause Year by Year A group of students at AUK are working hard towards a cause. What is the cause? Saving the children in need. STUDENTALK met up with AUKause as we take a look at how they became this great success and how things will be moving forward with them. We get their thoughts and their feelings behind starting this club and how it grew so far. What is AUKause? AUKause is a community service initiative working for one cause and our cause is to save the children. Every year, we have a cause to save people internationally and locally. We started this summer. Every month we have an event, such as in October we had a winter clothing drive and in December was the Santa cause. Each person came and picked a name from a Christmas tree. Each person who picked a name got a gift for these children who are in need. The children were cancer patients and we were able to get gifts for about 100 children. We had another event with AUS where we took kinds to a track that had small cars and traffic lights and all that where we taught them about car safety, to a point where kinds went home and told their parents not to use the phones while driving and to fasten their seatbelts. How did you begin? We started in the summer with Laveena Lobo, our advisor, contacted us. We didn’t really have a cause in mind and Dr. Carol Ross started AUKause. She came up with the name and, when we came up with a list of things we want to do, she saw what we focused on and we decided to make the cause for the year being ‘Save the Children’. She helped us a lot and we launched in September. We had our first market in the university and all the money went for the cause itself and that is how we began. The volunteer week, we called all organizations to come. Then, we had a seminar for drugs and it was a major success. It was about drug addiction and how to overcome it. We keep growing. How do you feel that AUKause benefits AUK as a university? I think it is a good reputation for the university. We are helping people in need. We want students to get involved in any event on campus. In an event that we made which was a carnival for people with special needs, we had volunteers who were very excited to work with us and kept working really hard. They want to be part of the events and of future events. They can also

collaborate if they have any ideas for future events or causes that we can focus on. What are your goals for the rest of the year? We have a trip to Nepal coming up where we want to go and help the people there during Spring Break. We chose people specifically who, when they come back, they can be a part of AUKause because some of us are graduating and this trip is very helpful to them. Many of us get really influenced by this trip and we have gone on other trips to India and Ghana in the past years. After that, we have the annual labor day, where we give back to the workers here by collecting donations and also make a buffet for them to show how much we appreciate what they have done for us. What can the students expect? To learn how to give. Thankfully, we live in a wealthy country and therefore we need to learn how to give back. When you see the outside where people are suffering, it changes you and makes you realize that they need help. This is the purpose of this initiative. Also, they should expect AUKause to grow. Have you encountered any obstacles? We learned a lot when it comes to organization and planning things in advance and always having a back-up plan. Furthermore, when we started, we had problems with collaboration and working together but, once everyone was on the same page, it was a lot easier. We keep improving. Anything else that you would like to add? We are open for suggestions on next years cause. We have a few ideas but we want to hear the other ideas. They can contact us on our e-mail at anytime to tell us their ideas or if they want to volunteer. We encourage people to start doing something similar and help in whatever way possible. We would like to thank Explorers Base for sponsoring us for the Nepal trip by giving us the equipment and training for this. Also, we want to thank Sultan Center who sponsored everything for the activities and the businesses in our latest carnival.

How Important is Fashion?
By Meshael Hasan When we hear the word “fashion”, we may very well think of ditsy supermodels that strut around in name brand pieces of fabric. Or some could think of movies like “The Devil Wears Prada”, “Confessions of a Shopaholic” or “Coco Before Chanel”. However, some think of it as an art, a career, a passion, or maybe even a lifestyle. So how could fashion possibly improve someone’s creativity? Think about this for a second, when you are getting ready in the morning, what goes through your mind?
32
No matter what it is, you probably put some thought into it and it’s probably pretty creative. There’s a cultural significance and a means of artistic expression that everyone forgets about it being strictly fashion. First impression is probably the most important thing to students; the majority of students’ think of fashion as a way to express themselves. People often assume our capabilities based on the way we are dressed. If you look like a slob, most people will assume you are one. And if you look good then people
will take you more seriously. But obviously, your attire will only take you so far. There’s no doubt that some see it as a waste of time and money but no one is saying spend hundreds on your wardrobe. Sometimes it’s good to mix and match. In the end, whether we know it or not, we all care about fashion, to some extent. “It says something about the power and reach of fashion that someone would respond to in such a negative way. If it didn’t matter, you would express a disinterest… Not a dislike!” – Robin Givhan
Student Diwaniya Topic of the Month
Westernizing Kuwait The Fashion Scene in Kuwait Kuwait has an extremely rich history in many different aspects, one of which is their clothing. Throughout the years, the traditional clothing of Kuwait has evolved in many different ways and the importance of the traditional clothing for both, men and women, has its own importance. With that said, there is also a kind of importance placed on the idea of Western clothing. The question is, what has lead to that?
If you decide to look into it in-depth, it isn’t difficult to realize that there are many different aspects that has lead to the citizens of Kuwait owning numerous clothing from some of the biggest Western stores such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Nike, Ralph Lauren, etc. Even though there are a lot of deeper reasons behind this, there are a few basic reasons as to how Kuwait has slowly become “westernized” in a way: Travel: This is probably in the forefront of the reasons behind “Westernizing Kuwait”. We all love to travel and, since we are living in the Gulf, we take our travelling opportunities to try going to different places in Europe, the United States, or Canada so that we can see the different parts of this world. While we’re there (especially if we go for University or live there for a few years), we become accustomed to their way of clothing to a certain extent. Then, when we come back here, we bring some of their clothing habits with us. I know this may not seem major but, as more people do it, it becomes more popular. Television: Another reason that Kuwait has become Westernized is the television. Many of us watch TV Shows or Movies that are directed and produced in the US and we are able to see their ways of life and, more importantly, their clothing. Without necessarily realizing it, we start liking what they’re wearing or something along those lines and decide that we want to wear the same type of clothing. I’m not saying that we want to copy them, but rather we just want to try out the same type of fashion sense. This is a big part when it comes to events such as the Oscars or the VMA’s where so many celebrities that we idolize wear the magnificent dresses and classy suits. We fall in love with what they’re wearing and try to find the same type of thing for us to wear as well.
34
ديوانية الطلبة موضوع الشهر
Introducing the Brands to Kuwait: With the past two reasons in mind, this leads to the businessmen in Kuwait seeing a great opportunity: Bring these favorite brands to Kuwait! You can’t blame them, really. This is what the country wants and what it needs so, therefore, there is no reason NOT to bring them to Kuwait. When visiting one of the malls nowadays, it’s very easy to see places such as American Eagle, Gucci, Mont Blanc, Tom Tailor, and other known brands available here for you to choose from. There is something available for everyone no matter what your style is or what you’re looking for. With that fact, we have also become a lot more modernized since everything is more available for us to choose from. When all is said and done, it is very important to remember that, even though we have become Westernized in terms of our clothing, that does not exactly mean that we have become ‘dependant’ nor does it mean that we have forgotten our traditions or values. In many cases, you can see the men and women of Kuwait wearing the traditional clothing and following their values as they keep their culture extremely close to their hearts. In formal occasions, you will always see the Kuwaiti people wearing their country’s clothing with pride and happiness. It is true that the clothing sense of Kuwait has become increasingly modernized but, even with all the ‘modern American clothing’, it is a beautiful thing to see that Kuwait still keeps its historical and modern values in extremely high regard. That alone shows that culture and values are integral to the country and nothing can ever change that.

Making Kuwait Proud Investigation
Charbel Zoé Making his name worldwide Charbel Zoé has become a worldwide name in Fashion after designing some of the most beautiful dresses for celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, and Shakira and he continues to show everyone what he is capable of. STUDENTALK was able to get an insight on how he has become what he is today while getting an insight into his thoughts on the fashion industry in the Gulf.
What made you decide to be a fashion designer? When I was about 16-years-old, I used to see the old Disney characters’ dresses and that inspired me. I started designing these types of dresses and then I slowly became more and more interested in continuing with it. What is your favorite part about it? When you’re preparing the collection and choosing the fabrics and bringing your ideas to life is the greatest part. It’s also amazing when you see your pieces in the fashion show. Every part of it is great in its own way. Focusing on the dress worn by Jennifer Lopez, how did it make you feel seeing her wear it? I’m extremely honored to dress some of the greatest icons such as Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, especially on such a big stage such as the MTV Video Music Awards and the FIFA World Cup. In my age, it’s a massive thing to be approved by these icons. JLo’s dress was chosen the best dress of the year! That was a shock to me but it was a great experience. How do you differentiate yourself from the other fashion designers? In Lebanon, a lot of them have made it. As for me, I gave my own touch and came to Kuwait. It is said that many of the designers here “copy” me but I don’t see it that way, they may have been “inspired” by me. When I came here, I saw that I changed most of the designers’ look-book. When I arrived, the fashion was totally different but now it’s something else. I feel like I gave something different to Kuwait and the clients have helped. I’m honored. What inspires you to design? Everything can inspire me. Anything that I see, such as history, culture, geometrical shapes, etc. Anything that I see in front of me inspires me to make my designs and go forward with my work.
36
فخر الكويت تحقيق
Is there a specific process that you go through for a new collection? Of course, it’s a massive process. You have to start creating the designs, choosing the fabrics, do your patterns, and then start sewing and creating the product. In a fashion show, you need to have a minimum of 35 dresses and for a look book you need about 15 or 20.
Do you feel that Kuwait has been adapting well to the International brands? Yes, for sure! You can see everything from the United States here and it’s highly respected here. Sometimes, they are a little bit late when receiving the collections but that’s about it. It’s not a major problem. Keep in mind that the market is different in the US so the collection itself is sometimes different.
How do you feel that fashion in Kuwait has developed in the past 5 years? I think that it is getting better. I see some designers coming out and I’m honestly proud of them and their work. It has been improving drastically over the years and I can only see it improving from here!
Do you feel that Kuwait should be more adaptive to International brands? No, I think it’s fine the way it is. It’s excellent here. I go to Avenues, for example, and see some of the big events they make and it’s great. I personally believe that no changes should be made in this specific part.
What are your plans for the future? Now, I am working on the grand opening of my showroom in Los Angeles in April so I’m excited about it. I’m working with a few celebrities that are different than the ones I have worked with. I want to keep most as a surprise but two of them will be Paris Hilton, who wore one of my dresses on the cover of Runway Magazine in the US and there is something else that I am working on with Kim Kardashian. There are others but I don’t want to mention it right now. There will be things coming up with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira as well. Anything else that you would like to add? There is a really good quote that I like and want to share, “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say, “because of you, I didn’t give up’. Don’t give up on your dreams because they will come true.

Making a Difference
An interview with Future Enterpreneurs As Kuwait continues to grow, we are able to witness some young minds doing everything in their power to make a difference. “Future Entrepreneurs” have been able to come out with a very unique way to assist the various talents in this country become more known on a great platform. In an interview Sarah Al-Mutairi, Bader Al-Kharafi, and Shamlan Al-Bader, STUDENTALK got the inside information of how this all began.
Tell us a little bit about Future Entrepreneurs. Bader: We wanted people to feel influenced by the entrepreneurs that we have today. Lots of people get let down easily or don’t know what to do in the future. FE was established to help people get a clear vision on where and how to focus their talents and never be let down. In the end, you have a lot of successful people who went through a lot to be at the position they are in today. We want to differentiate ourselves from anything you have ever seen. FE focuses on the mission and the vision, which is what makes a true exhibition. We are students trying to make a better Kuwait as we introduce something new to Kuwait. Shamlan: FE targets the customers as well as the vendors. Yes, we need to make vendors known in Kuwait but also it helps in motivating the customers as well to come up with new ideas. In a brief explanation, what do each of you do in FE? Shamlan: I basically organize most of the things in the group. I focus on aspects such as what is needed to be done and I do whatever I can to make sure it is all done on time and is all accurate. Sarah: I work on the creative directing. Therefore, I focus on marketing, all social media, and anything else that needs a creative sense in the events such as the sculptures during the event. Bader: I start everything up. Whether it is talking to sponsors, vendors, or any client, I work on that. Basically, I’m the “curator of FE” as the other two call me! What makes you different? Sarah: We are all very young and we are able to put in our own thoughts and think about things thoroughly by al three of us. We are able to provide different perspectives. Bader: It is also the way we set things up. We don’t focus on the money coming out of the event because we need to make ourselves known first. We focus on the vendors and the

event itself to make an impact. What are some obstacles that you have faced? Bader: Even though we weren’t focusing on money, it was still a huge problem. When you really want something though, you will always find a way around it. Another problem we faced was the support from some friends. This is because, when you explain this idea to someone, they will always think “event”. They have to come see it to know what it’s about. After the first event, we no longer face the same problem anymore because they saw what we are capable of. Marketing costs a lot of money and it was another obstacle. We approached many people and got a lot of different feedback from that. Shamlan: Juggling school work with the events and other requirements was a major obstacle at first but we have learnt time management and are
able to make things work more efficiently now. How did you come up with the logo? Bader: I wanted to represent Kuwait, growth and talent. A friend of mine put the idea of the plant, which shows the ‘old Kuwait’ as the pot of the plant and then the plant growing out of it is the growth in the shape of Kuwait on the map. It’s a small tree because we want to represent that there will still be a lot of growth. Anything to add? Sarah: Asnan Tower sponsored the “Diwaniya” with 15 different entrepreneurs speak about their experiences in the event and it was an open event for anyone to come and listen and speak face-to-face with some of the biggest entrepreneurs in Kuwait. Bader: We would like to thank the following for their amazing support: Bibi Al-Abdulmohsen Hassan Mousawi Asrar Al -Ansari Asma Al-Mulla Bader Al-Essa Shamlan Al-Bahar Areej Al-Khurafi Lulu Al-Aslawi Yalda Golsharifi

Enti by Hanna Delaimi
Fashion for the Modern Day Woman
Enti. You. The modern day woman. You may find it difficult to find something stylish and fashionable that will work well with your daily hectic schedule. Well, “Enti” is here to serve your fashion needs! STUDENTALK met up with Hannah Delaimi to get some in-depth information about her venture into the fashion world. Tell us more about ‘Enti’. ENTI is a casual chic clothing brand designed by myself Hannah Delaimi. The collection is minimal, sophisticated and practical. It offers the modern day woman a look she can carry off from day to night. What got you interested in this? With most women’s weight constantly fluctuating nowadays, as well as our hectic lifestyles, I felt that there was a need to come up with a line that puts these matters into consideration. The modern day woman is always busy and faces a bunch of tasks each day. She always has presence. She’s sociable, hard-working and deserves to be rewarded in clothing that she can function in comfortably. What type of fashion do you enjoy the most? I absolutely love Normcore. I think the trend is a godsend, allowing women to look as good as they feel! What are your thoughts on the fashion scene in Kuwait? Is it adapting well in regards to the global scene? Kuwait is generally up to date in the fashion and trends department. Fashion and shopping is considered a hobby/interest to most women. It helps that wehave access to almost all high street or high end international brands within our malls. The average Arab woman loves maintaining her appearance at tip top standards. She will travel around the world just to be up to date with the hottest international trends! She will also take her make up, hair, nails into consideration. The modern generation is experimental when it comes to trends and fashion statements and does not shy away from attention or individualism. Who is your inspiration? My inspiration..I would have to say people, places and culture are my biggest inspirations. But if I had to choose a designer it would definitely be Maison Martin Margiela.
44
What do you do other than this? I am a Fashion Blogger, Freelance Stylist and Art Teacher. Anything else that you would like to add? Plainly.. Simplicity is beauty. I specifically design pieces with simple yet exquisite cuts which can be dressed up or down. Further more .. Stay tuned for my SS15 collection coming soon.

Tell us a little bit about yourself I’m Natalie Abu Nassar and I’m from Russia. I study at the American University of Kuwait and my major is Communication and Media. How would you define your style of clothing? I don’t really consider myself having a specific style of clothing. I just enjoy going to the shops and buying what I like and what I feel would suit me and my personality. There isn’t anything specific, depends on me and my mood. Do you have any inspirations for your clothing? I usually like to read fashion magazines and pick items from different outfits so that I am able to make an outfit of my own as I pick and choose. It’s different and I feel that it looks better on me that way. Other than that, I also enjoy picking different styles while I am out shopping How do you feel the fashion scene is at your university? When it comes to fashion at AUK, it seems to be extremely diverse! Though, like many other things, style is subjective so you really cannot go wrong with fashion in the end. It all depends on your personal taste. Well, unless you are the fashion police!! In your opinion, is fashion an important part of your daily lifestyle? I personally consider fashion to be an extremely important part of my lifestyle. I like having things ready and picked out by me beforehand so that i make sure it will look good for the day. I really enjoy the fashion scene and it is really important to me Any last words for the readers? “You can never be overdressed or over-educated” This is a quote that I absolutely love by Oscar Wilde and I feel it’s something that everyone should really follow.

Style Tell us a bit about yourself My name is Walaa Moussa and I’m a senior at the American University of Kuwait. I am really looking forward to graduating and being able to start my career! I enjoy fashion yet it isn’t in the same way that many other people do, I guess. How would you define your style of clothing? I would like to consider my style of clothing as simple and comfortable. I don’t like anything too flashy; it is a university, after all. Being comfortable in what you are wearing, whether fashionable or not, is very important if you want to make it through the day. Do you have any inspirations for your clothing? Honestly, I don’t have a specific inspiration. I don’t just blindly follow trends. I choose what I like and think would look good on me; sometimes mixing and matching is good. But basically, I just wear the things I like and are simple. How do you feel about the fashion scene at AUK? The fashion scene of the university is not anything specific since everyone has their own style of clothing. But clearly, there is a lot of diversity, a lot of different styles; but then again, everyone wears what they are comfortable in. In your opinion, is fashion an important part of your daily lifestyle? Fashion is important, I guess. But it is more important for me to feel comfortable and at ease with my clothing at university since you’re going to be on campus all day going from one class to another and having to study. You already have to concentrate in your classes, I don’t want to be concentrating on my clothing being uncomfortable at the same time! Any last words for the readers? I think that it is important to feel comfortable with yourself and with what you decide to wear every day; especially when it comes to university. It is possible to look good and be comfortable at the same time. So, my advice would be to look fashionable yet, at the same time, be comfortable!

Which Musician
Will win the ''Most Talented''
Competition?
Tell us more about yourself Well, my name is Tarek Kabbani. Lebanese with Canadian Citizenship (typical - I know) and I was born and raised in Kuwait. I’m stoked to be on this issue to express my talents and share the spotlight with my competitor.
What is your talent? I have a few talents, including playing 4 instruments, messing around cool sounds using my voice, producing in my studio, but for this issue, and for the STUDENTALK LIVE Talent Competition, I will showcase my beatboxing. A talent I’ve practised since high school. How did you develop your talent? Practise makes perfect. The highest benefit of beatboxing is that you don’t need a microphone, or an amp, or electricity, or any instruments - since you make music using your
throat and mouth - and I basically practise it to an extent where I include it in my conversations at random. It has really become a part of my life as the music flows through my veins. What are your future plans? My plans are to move forward with what I do, share it with the world, collaborate with as many artists and musicians as I can, perform in as many shows as I can, and just do me. I’m excited for what the future has is store. Who supported your talent? Thankfully everyone has always been supportive and loving with my talents, I’m always told to push the limit even further, and do it more, do it bigger. I’m currently working on getting a beatbox demo recorded, edited, and posted online to really show the world what I can do. Did you encounter any obstacles? Not that I can recall - then again, I won’t let anything stand in my way. You can think of me as a man on a musical mission, and I’m more than willing to do everything it takes to achieve my goals. Any last words for the readers? Thanks for checking out my page! Thank you for STUDENTALK for having me on here and showing their everlasting love and support for what I do. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Some pigmentation disorders affect just patches of skin. Others affect your entire body. If your body makes too much melanin, your skin gets darker. Pregnancy and sun exposure make your skin darker. MELANYC DAILY/ NIGHT Daily and night care for melasma and age spots on face and body
According to dermatologists, 58% of the population in the world is concerned with age spots in some form or another: lentigo, melasma, blemishes or melanoma. During the first stages of facial aging, some unsightly alterations on the skin colour can appear, both in face and body, although we mainly find them in areas like the upper lip, chin, cheeks and forehead. Mr. Cayetano Gutiérrez, chemist and director of SkinClinic, has formulated a pioneering specific treatment to eliminate, reduce and prevent facial age spots in the short term, with a high concentration of active ingredients. This treatment called MELANYC, has been recently tested by the director of the Chair of Dermo-cosmetics at the Miguel Hernández University in Elche (Alicante, Spain), in a case study carried out with women who suffered from facial hyperpigmentation. The effectiveness of the results can be highlighted with three key aspects: in all cases there was an improvement and even the elimination of melasma; in many cases these improvements were visible in the short term within 7 days. MELANYC treatment is now available in Kuwait, Certified by Kuwait Ministry of Health (MOH).

Interview with Rakan Dashti Raising Awareness in the Middle East “Created in 2000, Gavi is an international organization - a global Vaccine Alliance, bringing together public and private sectors with the shared goal of creating equal access to new and underused vaccines for children living in the world’s poorest countries.” The Gulf Youth Alliance have been helping them create awareness in the Gulf region and we talk to Rakan Dashti to know more about them and their upcoming event.
What is the Gulf Youth Alliance? It is an association founded by the Middle East students who are here to promote Gavi, an international organization that immunize children around the world. Gavi works with the Bill Gates Foundation and they have immunized 800 million kids since 2000, which is almost 1/8 of the world population. So, we’re here to spread awareness and promote Gavi and what they do around the Gulf. We empower the youth to be aware of the Global issues that we are facing now and in the future.
68
What is Gavi? They are an international organization, like the United Nations for example, but nongovernmental. With that said, they do have governments that are participating in it. When I went to Germany, on that one day, Gavi was able to raise 7.539 Billion dollars with Bill Gates being the highest donator and then comes the United States as a government, and others such as the government of Sweden and Germany. Furthermore, you have individuals who have helped such as Warren Buffett in previous years. It’s a big deal.
What are goals of the GYA in the near future? In the near future, we plan to raise one-million dollars throughout the Gulf region through the youth to donate to Gavi in order to show that the youth are aware and the youth do care and are planning to participate to help prevent these disasters and issues that come our way. A lot of the things that cause death to children around the world are very preventable but, unfortunately, some countries don’t have the money for it. This is why Gavi have been able to save so many children.
تغطية خاصة
How can people donate? We contact you with the Gavi official in the Middle East and you do the transaction from there. So far, we have had KIPCO group and the National Industries Group donate to Gavi. So far, we have donated 50,000 KD and therefore are able to help around 7,000 kids. As an individual to donate, we will be able to do that in our upcoming event where individuals can donate however much they want to in order to help and support Gavi. What have you worked on so far? So far, we are working on creating our event on then 25th of April, and the location will be released on the GYA Instagram soon! The event is there to promote Gavi since not many people know what they do but many people should know. This is what we have done so far, we worked on the event. We are currently working on another event in Bahrain in the same week because many people will fly in from Switzerland and other countries to attend both events (Bahrain and Kuwait).
Give us some details about this upcoming event The event will be split into three parts: We have the health section which will feature local health institutions such as The Blood Bank, the Diabetes Center, the Cancer Awareness Center so that, for example, if you’re there and want to donate blood, you will be able to. The middle section is the main section, which is Gavi. We will have booths and educational videos, pamphlets, and representatives so that if people have any questions regarding things such as internship, job openings, donations, or volunteering, it will all be answered clearly. The last section is the market section, which will have exhibitors and different places. There is also a section for the young kids who want to be there as their family want to go around. It’s a one-day event on the 25th of April and is open to the public from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
Anything else that you would like to add? I would really like for people to come out to the event because I want people to learn about Gavi and be aware of the situation going on in the world. There is more to life that what we do now on a daily basis. Thankfully, we are blessed, but there are many people who aren’t. This is a big organization and it will be great for the youth of Kuwait to be more involved. I was proud to represent Kuwait in Germany when I went there and I want to bring the youth with me through this journey.

Education is... Mind-Blowing! An Interview with Margo McCoy Howe “Education is mind-blowing! answers education consultant Margo McCoy Howe, when we ask her to describe education in her words. As part of a collaboration between the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait and the Ministry of Education, Margo came to Kuwait for the first time to present a workshop for public education teachers who help students apply to U.S. universities. STUDENTALK learned lots of new information about resources to approach studying in the U.S. What are the very first steps a student should take to prepare for a U.S. university? Firstly, let me say that it is really marvelous to note that for a country the size of Kuwait there are about 10,000 to 11,000 students at any given time studying in the U.S. Importantly, I recommend that students approach the counselor in their schools, who can help pave the way on what education path the students wish to take and the process. This should be first step a student takes. Secondly, there are a few resources available online that can be a double plus coupled with guidance from a counselor and family support. The U.S. Embassy offers www.educationusa. info which is an excellent place to start, the absolute best resource that the U.S. Department of State has put together. There are centers worldwide and in Kuwait as well; and I highly recommend contacting them for information on standardized testing, TOEFL needs as they are accurate and up-to-date with all the current details. The email address is: EducationUSA.q8@state.gov. Though I emphasize the importance of accessing these websites, it is imperative that it is done connected to the local counselor at your schools. What about preparing for the tests and visa requirements? It is best to approach the local centers to make sure that you are current about the testing format. The best way to prepare yourself for these tests is pure old-fashioned preparation and studying. College Board in the U.S. has partnered with an organization called Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) and they have created a website that has a ton of free study material for all kinds of subjects, including SATs and free testing. I truly believe students can be successful in achieving good results in testing without having to pay an outside party to help them prepare. You can access this site for the study material whether you are preparing to study in the U.S. or even if you are wanting to study anywhere else - www.bigfuture.collegeboard.org.

Students can contact the EducationUSA advisor here in Kuwait via the above email, who will not only advise on testing information but can also assist with the I-20 student visa procedures once you have received an acceptance letter from a university. This assistance is open to all nationalities. I highly caution students to keep track of the relevant deadlines; pay attention and make a note in your calendars to make sure you apply in time and approach everything in a timely manner.
they are ready to work, the markets and job situations could be very different from now. The field of tomorrow is possibility! I tell my students what I am now telling your students here: be whatever you want to be. Parents should support their children and let them go and make a choice of their own. Be good at what you do and work hard and you will surely excel!
Other than high-school academic credentials, how much importance should students give to non-academics and essay-writing as well for their application to U.S. universities? For the most part, the universities you are applying to are holistic institutions; they are looking at a whole person. Definitely grades do matter, but the college might pay attention to a student’s interests and personality to evaluate if they are a good match for the kind of kids that go to that institution. They understand that not all international students have the same resources available at their local schools, for example with AP (advance placement) classes, so they are not going to penalize the children for that. However, they are assessing how students have taken the maximum advantage of the opportunities given to them by their school and community; it could be sports, it could be charity work, it could be community service like taking care of the elderly. For non-academics, basically a college wants to know how have you used your time well when you are not in class. As for essay-writing, again the colleges understand and give a little more of a breath on grammar. The main objective should be to get your message across with fairly decent, acceptable English with a clear and sincere message. How else can the students prepare themselves? I would encourage them to try to find outsome cultural information, customs of the place they are going to, and try to understand what they might be fearful of. I can safely recommend www.edupass.org. Not only is this site a great resource for financing and education information; but more interestingly it has a whole section on cultural differences. This could really help in easing your mind about certain day-to-day things that you would normally never think about, and in turn ease your way into a new way of life while studying. What would you say to “Education is…”? And, what as per you is the field of the future? I have never been asked that; to me, education is mind-blowing. It takes what we think we know and just magnifies it to a whole different level. Thank you for asking me that, it is probably the first time I have ever said it. These students are facing a high-paced changing environment and world. By the time

Pop, Lock, and Drop your Old Habits! ''Life's like a box of chocolates'' it's a metaphor, and not about eating the whole box!
We come across so many different people a day and at the end of the day we face the mirror and look at ourselves. Some people may be satisfied with what they see while others, even the majority are being brought down by their appearance. With being brought down, comes a burden, yes a burden- the lack of self-confidence and the feeling of discomfort when it comes to choosing daily outfits, that’s a daily struggle. Instead of purchasing what you want, you start purchasing what you need to wear. You start drifting away from your actual sense of style, seeking different ways to hide what you don’t want to show and once that happens you are in trouble! You might think you aren’t in any trouble, in fact, you might think you found the trick, the way out. Nope, you found a way to hide, a way to allow yourself to gain as much weight as you want and mastering the power of hiding it! Notice how the article started with a general ‘we’ and shifted to ‘you’ at one point? That’s because you are the only person responsible for that discomfort and lack of self-confidence when it comes to physical appearance! Smart eating is clean eating, and clean eating is consuming food in its most natural state or as close to that as possible! Here are a few tips to follow which will make a difference: Choose organic whenever possible- it’s 2015, every supermarket has an organic section and you can find almost all your favorite items there, but organic! Check labels – the less ingredients, the better. Long ingredient lists mean that the product has many human made factors, and unfortunately, that is considered not clean. Know your enemies – avoid processed foods, artificial flavoring, preservatives, fried food or anything high in sugar. Water, water, water! You’ve heard this one enough, it’s quite self-explanatory. Finally, move! Yes, move your body. Get your own phone from the car when you forget it- really, just move! Next time you wonder how it can be so effortless to plan a daily outfit, consider the simple steps above. Xoxo, Foodista

Six Appeal Make it metal, make it awesome! The Samsung S6 Gadgets
S6 is made out of an attractive fusion of glass and metal, with the latter material as the predominant choice. With a more solid and premium feeling that fits better in your hand as it is more compact.
Samsung has moved away from the heavily criticized plastic, cheap-feeling design of the S5 in favor of a crafted metal bezel around a thinner 6.8mm body covered in Gorilla Glass. If the phrase “more premium” becomes repetitive, just know that it’s an apt one. Though, this is not a phone for those with an aversion for fingerprints as the glass rear picks up greasy prints easily. The size is actually pretty impressive; it fits in a much larger screen with higher resolution. Much like the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy S6 comes with a 2560 X 1440 pixel QHD resolution. The five colors available at launch – Gold Platinum, Blue Topaz, White Pearl and Black Sapphire – have a translucent dual tone to them. For example, the gold model has a hint of platinum in it, depending on the angle from which you look at it. It’s an unusual eyecatching effect. The fine detail of the S6 is on another level.
fingerprint scanner, which no longer requires you to swipe your finger across it. Instead, you just hold your finger over it and voila! It’s official, Samsung has finally ditched the removable battery and thrown out the microSD card slot. It’s a clean user experience overall, with color coding to help differentiate between sections such as contacts and gallery. The battery is no longer removable and is only 2550mAh, compared to the 2800mAh last year. This could mean that Samsung was able to make the chipset, screen and operating system more efficient. Because of the new charging system, the phone can charge up enough for 2 hours’ video playback in just 10minutes.
Samsung has also unveiled the S6 Edge, Which, ironically enough could pull Samsung back from the edge! The S6 Edge has similar specifications to the S6. In fact, the only real difference is the larger battery capacity and the curved edges. Both new Samsung phones look highly impressive on first view. They’re essentially the same but running down each of the sides, of the S6 Edge, are two curves where the glass gently falls away to meet the rear of the phone. So, it’s safe to say that it’s the Edge that steals the show! So if you’re looking to get people’s attention with your new SpacePhone, then Galaxy S6 Edge is the way to go.
The camera sticks out ever so slightly from the back, which adds to the comfort of holding the phone. Samsung has also reworked the

Groundbreaking McLaren Super Series Continues to Break Records Cars
McLaren Automotive celebrated the build of the 5,000th McLaren supercar. Based on the groundbreaking carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, the car forms part the recently announced McLaren Super Series, which is only in its fourth full year of vehicle production.
Launched initially with the 12C in 2011, and followed by the 12C Spider and then 650S, the Super Series is now the highest volume carbon fibre supercar range ever. This milestone comes shortly after McLaren announced a third consecutive growth in sales, with more than 1,400 Super Series models being delivered during 2014. The 5,000th car, which rolled out from the assembly line in the McLaren Production Centre, is a Volcano Yellow 650S Spider commissioned for a customer in Australia. It was joined at the end of the production line by the first production 12C, which has now become part of the McLaren Heritage Collection.“We are truly proud and honoured to be associated with the McLaren automotive brand as it reached an important milestone in their history,” said Mr. Yousuf Al Qatami, General Manager of Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive, the exclusive importer for McLaren, Land Rover, BMW, MINI and RollsRoyce automobiles in Kuwait. “We therefore extend our heartfelt congratulations to McLaren Automotive as we look forward to an even stronger partnership with them in the years to come,” he added. Production of the 12C began at the start of 2011, with the early models assembled by approximately 30 employees in a designated manufacturing facility within the McLaren Technology Centre. Deliveries commenced globally from June, before the state-of-theart McLaren Production Centre opened its doors in November, becoming the birthplace of all McLaren roadcars. The bespoke facility was designed by Foster + Partners, and combines outstanding quality with highly efficient production methods. It is now a home to over 500 employees working across the manufacturing and logistics operations.

أسلوب الحياة السيارات
Close to 450 of the 5,000 cars produced so far have been sold or allocated to the Middle East & Africa region, with the United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia leading the demand. This is a relatively small number of cars when compared to the numbers produced by McLaren Automotive competitors, however, this is a key component of the company’s business strategy to ensure exclusivity. As such, the Middle East region has a strong 650S order bank, as exclusivity is one of the attractions of McLaren ownership along with greater power performance and technologies than the competition. The McLaren Super Series forms the core range of McLaren supercar offering and sits above the recently announced Sports Series in the model hierarchy. The family of models will be soon expanded with the recentlyannounced McLaren 675LT, confirmed for global reveal at the 2015 International Geneva Motor Show in March. The announcement follows an internal staff ceremony attended by over 1,400 employees at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey.

Healing your spiritual energy with Yoga Yoga is a great way to work on your flexibility. Just about anyone can do it! It’s not just for people who can touch their toes or want to meditate. Some types of yoga are about relaxation.
Less stress, more calm You may feel less stressed and more relaxed after doing some yoga. Some styles use meditation techniques that help calm the mind. Hatha yoga, for example, is an easy-tolearn basic form of yoga that has become very popular. This type of yoga is the foundation of all yoga styles. It incorporates postures, regular breathing, and meditation into a complete system that can be used to achieve enlightenment, self management, and selfrealization. The ideal way to practice the Hatha Yoga poses is to approach the practice in a calm, meditative mood. Sit quietly for a few moments, and then begin your session slowly, with control and grace. Never try to overdo or compete with others. Take it easy and enjoy! Strike a pose for strength Some types such as Ashtanga and Power yoga are very physical. Practicing one of the styles will help improve muscle tone. Ashtanga is an athletic yoga and is not for beginners. This type of yoga is physically demanding as it involves synchronizing breathing with progressive and continuous series of postures; the process produces intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs.
The result is improved circulation, flexibility, stamina, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. Power yoga is essentially yoga with brawn. It’s an American interpretation of Ashtanga yoga. It’s a discipline that combines stretching, strength training, and meditative breathing. However, Power yoga takes Ashtanga yoga on step further.. Many of the poses resemble basic calisthenics; but they key to power yoga’s sweat-producing, muscle building power is the pace. Instead of pausing between poses as you would in traditional yoga, each move flows into the next, making it an intense aerobic workout. Lose that Baby Fat! If touching your toes is the dream, take heart: Bikram Yoga is a method of yoga that is a comprehensive workout that includes all the components of fitness: muscular strength, endurance, cardiovascular flexibility and weight loss. One of the unusual yet most beneficial aspects of Bikram’s yoga practice is the 35-40 degree temperature which promotes more flexibility, detoxification, and prevention of injuries. This is the ONLY yoga style that specializes in using a heated environment.
Yoga can be beneficial in many ways as it has proven to lower the risk of injuries, lowers stress, improves your general mood, helps with weight loss, improves muscle tone and strength, increases flexibility, and many other things that are extremely valuable for your body and mind. If you haven’t tried it yet, give it a go as it will surely make you feel like a better person!

The master classes are now available in Kuwait! The 90-minute Zumba master class was held with special guest instructor, Loretta Bates, who came from North Carolina to dance with the women in Kuwait at the Al-Bayan Alumni Club (BBS). Loretta is one of the top Zumba instructors and Zumba Education Specialist (ZES) in the program. She is mostly known for her reggae-ton session at the Zumba instructor convention and loves belly-dancing as well! She visited Kuwait for the first time as it was a lifelong dream of hers and, while she was here, she visited Souq AlMubarakiya, the Kuwait Towers, and Al-Marsa for lunch. All the women who attended loved her and really enjoyed the event. It was a sold-out audience of about 120 women, all of whom were ready to sweat and have a great time! Now, the journey has begun for Zaina as she hosts the Zumba master classes in Kuwait. This is definitely just the beginning of a series of Zumba events that Kuwait has yet to see. The next major event will be in October and promises to be the event of a lifetime! Thank you to the amazing sponsors: Decathlon, Bio-Oil, Caudalie, and Nuxe.

178 million smiles on the International Day of Happiness
More than 178 million children are enjoying a better start in life, thanks to IKEA Foundation-funded programmes. The majority of the children are in India, where the Foundation has been working for 15 years.
The announcement came on the International Day of Happiness (March 20), as the Foundation published its 2014 annual review, 178 million smiles, which also revealed that last year alone it gave €104 million in grants and in-kind donations to 40 partners operating in 46 countries. By 2015, currently-funded programmes have benefited an estimated 178 million children. “Achieving this goal hasn’t been easy,” said Per Heggenes, Chief Executive Officer of the IKEA Foundation, “but over the years we’ve grown steadily and developed innovative partnerships with organisations helping millions of vulnerable children in some of the world’s poorest communities.” The Foundation’s work has ranged from simple but important initiatives, such as providing immunisations or vitamin supplements, to comprehensive programmes supporting entire communities. Other highlights from the report show that last year the Foundation: • Gave €10 million in grants for disaster and emergency relief, including its biggest-ever emergency donation of €5 million to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to fight Ebola in West Africa. • By the end of 2014, its funding to UNICEF in India helped 1.2million babies get much needed specialist care. • Supplied 48,0000 IKEA toys for UNICEF’s Early Childhood Development kits, 6,000 were sent to 11 countries in 2014, including Syria, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. • Donated a total of 150,000 IKEA mattresses, quilts and quilt covers to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) for Syrian refugees living in Iraq.
