Dear Students, On the 27th of September, the world had its Red Moon. A phenomenon that takes place every 18 years. For most, a Red Moon symbolizes a great omen for change, and I was so over excited with the news. Then my friend asked me, why are you so happy? They said change, but they never specified whether the change was good or bad! And this is when I replied that ‘I am a true optimist’. I always look at tomorrow as a new opportunity, for positive change, for growth, for improvement and embetterment. And tomorrow will always be tomorrow. It will have its joys, it will have its pains, its highs its lows, and throughout it all, tomorrow will always be our opportunity to grow and be thankful and grateful for being given that extra one day. May you always look forward and appreciate your tomorrow. Till the next issue,

Ahmed Ifsisi Highlighting Kuwait's Car Fanatic

Ahmed Ifsisi has been able to stick to his passion of cars as he continues the business that his dad once started. Whether it’s tweaking cars, fixing the problems, or even racing, he has done it all and continues to improve all his skills. STUDENTALK takes a look at how things have gone for him and his company, White Ray Performance. Tell us about yourself My name is Ahmed Ifsisi and I’m a 23-yearold AUK Marketing Student and a WRP racing Team Member. What made you fall in love with cars? Since I was a young boy, I grew up watching my dad race and modify sport cars. That’s what sparked my interest and passion with cars. Since then, the passion of modifying cars and racing continued to grow and I have been able to learn something new everyday. I’m lucky enough to be able to work in something that I love and care about so much. How did you get into racing? Where have you raced so far? My first official race was back when I was 18-years-old in the GULFRUN Go Karting 26 Hours endurance raceI alsojoin my brother when he competes atthe Qatar Mile tournament where he broke the record in the V8 Modified Category with the speed of 314.68 KM at the 1/2Mile last season, which was held on the 17th/18th April 2015. I also joined 17 local go kart races here at Sirbb Circuit where I won; • 12 Races 1st Place • 2 Races2nd Place • 1 Race 3rd place • My Best time was 45.3 Seconds Tell us about WRP and what is done there? W.R.P (White Ray Performance)ismy dad’s Garage located in the Shuwaikh Industrial Area where my older brother Adnan and I work. We are both specialized in modifying and dyno tuning all American muscle cars and any car that’s powered with an American engine. What do you enjoy most about the work you do there? Working on big engines is what I favor the most there. Also, my experience is mostly in that area trying to get the maximum engine performance. I especially love adding additional modifications such as camshafts, nitrous oxide and bolts on partsto enhance a vehicle and awaken its true potential.

‫قصة الغالف‬

How is it mixing your work life with your university obligations? Work and studying is a real struggle for me because I know that university is my top priority but I have a problem prioritizing it over working at my dad’s garage. I tend to put the garage at the top of my obligations list in all honesty. Even so, I still try to balance both because I know my responsibilities and what I should prioritize in the end. It’s difficult but it definitely isn’t impossible. Tell us about the car “Gergean” Gergean is a drag racing car that was totally hand built from the ground up by my father. My father designed and welded everything together. The chassis was built first, all hand-welded, then the bodywork was done, which is so critical and had to be precise. It was all drawn by hand and there were no computers involved in making up the design or the measurements needed for the body. The name of Gergean was used due to the time of starting the project which was Gergean which is an occasion during the month of Ramadan.

Any plans for the future? My future plans include getting my bachelors degree in Marketing from AUK, working on my 1971 Corvette Stingray which is a classic muscle car icon, which I hope I’ll finish soon and lastly I want to expand my business as soon as I graduate. Anything else that you would like to add? I would really like to thank my Mom and Dad who really supported me as a student and my passion with sport cars and a special thanks to my older brother Adnan for guiding and being my mentor on my journey as a racer. I hope in the near future they re-open a Drag Racing Strip here in Kuwait instead of us traveling around to other countries to compete. A drag racing strip will also benefit us and the younger generation as to stop putting themselves and others in danger when they get rowdy and try to live their fast and furious moments on the streets. Also, I would really love to thank STUDENTALK Magazine for this interview! Tips for Safe Driving! By Hamed Al-Hashem

Remember when you first got your driver’s license!? Yes, we all get excited and can’t wait to get into our new cars and cruise, but nothing comes without consequences! Road safety is vital when it comes to driving, especially with all the accidents happening around Kuwait due to reckless driving. It is unfortunate that many people are getting severely injured or actually dying because many don’t respect the traffic laws or in a hurry to get to their destination. Sadly, Kuwait is one of the few countries in the world with the highest accident fatality rate, which can be prevented by following a few simple steps. There are a few tips to prevent accidents from happening that everyone should abide by while driving. Seatbelts are there for a reason! Always wear them. Do not exceed the legal speed limits. Also, recognizing traffic signs is a must! Some people pass through them without paying attention to them, which are definitely causing some serious problems on the road, including traffic. Never be in a hurry. If you are supposed to be in a certain place in a certain time, then leave your destination early. Do not panic if you are late for an appointment. This will lead to speeding and will jeopardize your life and those around you. Other words, it will cause more harm than good, which is completely not worth it. Instead, keep calm and drive slowly. Arriving to your appointment late is better than causing a fatal accident. Always be alert, especially when driving in residential areas. Watch out for cyclists, animals and pedestrians when driving because you never know what pops out in front of you while you are driving. Always check your speedometer because you could exceed the legal speed limit without knowing and check the side mirrors frequently to stay cautious on what is going on around you. Many people here text or talk on the phone while driving. Many car accidents and deaths occur here because drivers use their phones while they are driving and not paying attention to the roads. This is a huge risk that you are taking for yourself and those around you. Never use your phone while driving! Eating and drinking while driving also has a huge risk for fatal accidents. Drive to a parking space and eat your food safely. It only takes minutes! Besides, eating and drinking will decrease your alertness while driving. Everyone can have fun driving and cruising, especially those who just got their licenses and are eager to stay in their car and cruise. When it comes to safety, following these few safety tips will make a huge difference in the accident fatality rate in Kuwait. Stay alert, Keep your hands on the wheels, your eyes on the road and drive safe.

This months’ category was “Koolest Personality” as we found Cléa Roche and Abdullah Al-Barqawi. Who’s your favorite? Make sure that you let us know your thoughts by voting on www.studentalk-online.com! Tell us a little about yourself My name is Cléa Roche and I’m 22 years old. I study Management and Finance at the American University of Kuwait. I am French but I’ve lived in Kuwait for 8 years. I love traveling around the world and I have the Wanderlust syndrome so I need to travel at least three times a year! I am also a certified scuba diver and I enjoy trying new activities and never say no to crazy ideas. What do you think of when purchasing a car? When purchasing a car, I look for design, style and comfort. I am into sport cars but I wouldn’t get one in Kuwait because I would be scared of people’s driving around me when I have a fast car. I prefer jeeps for security reasons. I also love flashy colors and when a car stands out. I don’t like having the same car as everyone else. How do you feel about the atmosphere at your university campus? It was better for me a couple years ago mainly because most of my close friends have graduated since then. I still really enjoy being here though and I will be leaving with a lot of memories. Also, the Professors here are great! If you asked your best friend to describe you, what would they say? They would say: “Well Cléa has been the closest person to me for years now and if anyone can describe her it’s me and I can tell you that no one is more loyal, honest and there for you more than her. She is the one to go to for advice and help with anything whatsoever and she always knew how to make me happy when I was sad. I’m very glad she is a part of my life. Truly one of a kind.” If you were to describe your personality in one sentence, what would it be? Well I guess I am loyal and honest I love helping people. I am shy at first but I turn out to be kind of crazy sometimes. Any last words for the readers? Thank you for taking time to read this and please VOTE FOR ME!

I’m also an athlete and am part of the Volleyball team at the university. Sports is definitely a passion of mine and I enjoy it more than anything. What do you think of when purchasing a car? The first thing that I think about is the engine. Afterwards, it’s the look of the car in regards to the exterior and the overall design of it. In my opinion, one of the most important things that a car should have is the surround system since I really love listening to music! Also, the car has to be economical so that I don’t end up spending too much money on maintenance and other things that could happen to it. How do you feel about the atmosphere at your university campus? It is a very fun and engaging atmosphere. It’s a diverse atmosphere and therefore there are a lot of people to meet here and get to know. The fact that I have been living in Kuwait all my life made it easier because there were a lot of people that I already knew before attending AUK but I was also able to make some great friends here as well. If you asked your best friend to describe you, what would they say? ‘He’s a reliable friend and you can honestly count on him with anything. Furthermore, he has a great sense of humor that cannot be overlooked. He’s always up for doing anything and the best thing about him is the smile that he carries around with him everywhere he goes!’ If you were to describe your personality in one sentence, what would it be? It’s hard to bring me down.

Talent Competition Highighting Last Month's Winner

Are you a student in Kuwait with a talent that deserves to be seen? If so then here is your chance, STUDENTALK wants you! Email us at: info@ph7-kw.com Tell us more about yourself My name is Rateb Shehadeh and I am 20-yearsold. I’m an Communications and Media and Marketing major at AUK. After graduation, I want to move on in order to continue my Masters in Canada. I also want to start working somewhere I would enjoy and is a very highpaid job.

Any last words for the readers? We all have talents, whether or not we are aware of them. There is nothing wrong with trying and you should keep trying until you get satisfied with yourself and what you do.

What is your talent? My talent is drawing and painting. I like expressing all of my thoughts through my art. How did you develop your talent? Around two years ago in Jordan, I went to drop my sister at an art studio so she can develop this talent. I never drew or even tried to before. When we went there, I ended up registering at the studio and my sister didn’t! I got inspired and in my first week even though I struggled to even draw basic shapes. I didn’t know I had a talent in me. That studio brought out the talent and I shocked the instructors by what I was capable of drawing. Since then, I completed around 5 paintings and I realized you just need something to make you feel aware about your talents and you need to keep practicing until you feel satisfied with what you do. What are your future plans? I want to start drawing around 2-3 paintings per month. When I have the number of paintings that I want, I am planning to hopefully begin displaying them in galleries or even have my own gallery to display them there. Perhaps, after that, I can sell them if I feel ready to let go for them. Who supported your talent? My parents and the feedback that I used to get from my friends and people around me alone was an inspiration for me to keep on going. Did you encounter any obstacles? In the beginning, I did. There is always an obstacle in the beginning. I faced a lot of them when I entered the course because I didn’t know that I was capable of drawing anything. I kept working on it until I was able to draw successfully. I also fac problems whenever I started a new painting because I do not get satisfied easily and that is an obstacle in itself.

Tell us more about yourself My name is Asaad Al-Dajani and I am currently a business student at ACK, doing my second semester in Business Management. I have two hobbies, which are going to the gym and the second is beatboxing What is your talent? My talent is beatboxing. I love it and I’ve been doing it since I was 15. Up until today, I keep trying to improve myself. I began after hearing a person called Stringo. After that, I went home and looked at YouTube videos about it and enhanced my skills. I wanted to learn more about it and see if it’s actually something that I could do.

Any last words for the readers? I used to hang out with people a while back who thought I was crazy because I was making these weird sounds with my mouth and they didn’t understand what I was trying to do no matter how much I improved. If you are able to impress people, that is what pushes you and you should surround yourself around those people to get the motivation that you need. If you have a goal, keep fighting for it. You can do it as long as it is what you really want.

How did you develop your talent? When I first heard it, I was really into the idea of drumming but wasn’t able to get a drum set at home. So, when I heard beatboxing, it was something that sort of sounds like drums and I got hooked right away. I wanted to be able to make those sounds and create those beats. The fact that I had the opportunity to do it without having to actually purchase anything made it even more intriguing. What are your future plans? I don’t have a future plan in beatboxing but I have done a few shows in Kuwait, whether it was paid or just for fun. I plan to graduate and continue my Masters in Canada. I want to get a diploma in computer programming as well because it is something that I am really interested in as well. Who supported your talent? All of my friends at the time and today have given me continuous support and my mother has also been able to support and motivate me to continue doing this. Did you encounter any obstacles? Yes, I did. My main obstacle was actually my father because he was really against it at first as he saw it was very westernized. With time though, he heard the things that I could do and saw how serious I was about it. After that, he became a lot more lenient and accepting with the whole thing.

Asaad vs. Muhannad www.studentalk-online.com

Tell us more about yourself My name is Muhannad Al-Wazzan and I’m a Graphic Design student at AUK. I enjoy art in any form, not a single day goes by without me listening to music. Tupac, Biggie, and Michael Jackson are artists who I’ve idolized since my childhood. Also, having my morning Espresso is my favorite part of the day. Football is my favorite sport and Manchester United is my team. What is your talent? Drawing is my talent, it has been my favorite activity since about Grade 4. For me, it’s not an escape from reality as many people say it is but rather it is more of my perception of reality. It’s a state of trance that allows me to express myself freely without being hesitant or restrained. Drawing is one of the few things that that makes me feel at peace, it simply clears my mind. I could do it for hours without noticing the time!

Who supported your talent? I wish that I could answer this without leaving people out… My brother introduced me to this beautiful craft, Ms. Mona who was my art teacher for four years allowed me to reach a point I never thought I was capable of, and finally my mother who believed in me and never questioned my hobby. She bought me every pen, paint, brush, and canvas I wanted. Did you encounter any obstacles? The only obstacle that I face is the person I look at in the mirror every morning. I am my own critic, judge, and jury. Many have discouraged me when I wanted to fully invest myself in

graphic design due to the competition. Yet, how is it competition when I’m only competing with myself? I have no regard for other graphic designers. In fact, I praise them. Any last words for the readers? I urge people to pursue their dreams and passions no matter what others tell them. In the end, it’s about YOU, the path you’ve chosen and the legacy you inspire to leave behind.

How did you develop your talent? I developed my talent by drawing everything that I found amusing over and over again. At first, it started by watching my oldest brother draw and I’d copy everything that he did. Later, I started drawing on my own. Nothing I drew was original though, it was always a copy of someone else’s work. Grade 6 was my milestone as I started using my own imagination and allowed it to take over me. What are your future plans? Hopefully after graduating university, I would love to study and work in animation. We live in a digitalized world and everything has become cyber. Art is always about sending a message and making people feel something. How am I going to send a message and allow my art to reach the world if I use old-school methods? I would also like to sell my art. A lot of artists take advantage of people in the name of ‘art’ as they sell incoherent paintings with ridiculous prices and have the audacity to call it “abstract”. I want to sell my work with prices that people like myself and your readers are able to easily afford.

FABRICE Bringing Reggae back to Life

It all begins with the love for art as it then becomes a specific love into one of the many art forms available for us. FABRICE is a musician and has been able to show us a different genre than we are used to here as he shows us his reggae side. STUDENTALK was able to meet with him in order to know how a French Caribbean man has ended up singing Reggae in Kuwait! Tell us about yourself I am a French Caribbean Artist. I’m an Art lover first then a singer, writer, composer, producer & arranger. Furthermore, I consider myself an ardent defender of raw pure music. What has made you follow the path of singing reggae music? I have been raised during my childhood in a small Caribbean island called La Guadeloupe. My father is also a music lover and has about 3000 vinyl’s now and, of course, many tapes, CD’s, and MP3’s. I remember the neighbor played a record and my father crossing the street to ask him what it was. He said, “Jah Music, Reggae!” Then Bob Marley became our first international star in regards to Caribbean people. He was talking about us. When did you decide that this was something you wanted to do? After a concert in Paris, I came across David Rubinson and Herbie Hancock. Herbie invited me to his birthday party in Nice for the Jazz festival. They told me they loved my voice and my music and I remembered agreeing with them but something was missing. At that time, I was composing a mix of Gwo Ka and Jazz. David, his producer, asked me what was the music I loved the most and I said Reggae first, then the rest. He told me this is what I could do. I did a cover of Hallelujah and then one of my best friends, Stéphane Détrez from Soundgood Production, listened to some new songs and told me words I will never forget; “Wow, that’s amazing! I used to like your style but now I love it!” Who would you say is your biggest inspiration musically? In terms of production, my biggest influence is Prince. That’s why until I was 15 years old, I wanted to play all the instruments, record, mix, everything and be independent because no one knows better than me what I have in my head. In terms of melody, it’s Bob Marley. Simple and powerful. In terms of engineering music and record it, it’s Joe Henry. He has worked with old soul & gospel artists like Betty Lavette, Aaron Neville, Susan Tedeschi and everytime it has been their best album. The sound is amazing, deep, roots and acoustic.

In terms of singing I cannot choose between Ray Charles and Nina Simone. They both have a very particular way to express themselves. In terms of mood and atmosphere, I would say Sade, Erykah Badu or Marvin Gaye. I like moody songs with a different feeling. Tell us about your recent album. Where can we find it? The name is #Home. I question the people : “If you were walking in my shoes then what would home mean to you?” In the first song and ask them to say it when they disagree in the last song named “Rebel”. There are love songs, protest songs... I have never tried to please the crowd, it has to be something that I love first. You can find my album on iTunes, Bandcamp, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon etc... How was the process in producing this album in comparison to the others that you have released? I did everything in my home studio in Kuwait. I have played almost every instrument, written, composed, arranged, recorded, and mixed. I have collaborated with some different artists from Kuwait : Carol Souki who did some vocals on “Fear”, Amin Fari on “Sorry”, Faswords dropped some Slam Poetry on “Back to life”, Hashim Al-Nasser played guitar on “Home”, Adel Al-Qattan played Spanish guitar on “9 months & Years”. Then there were artists from France like Michael Hernandez who played Fender Rhodes on “Home”, “Fear” &”Love” and Flora Sicot who did vocals on “My Beloved Woman”. If you had to choose one song of yours that describes who you are the most, which one would it be and why? I think it’s “Rebel”, the last song of the last of the last album. Any last words for the readers? Buy my new project : It’s new and original ;-)

Interview with Sherie Henderson Training Week with PAEET & MOE

Sherie Henderson has established herself as a Professor in English and has come to visit Kuwait bringing her vast experience in her field as well as her experiences in various cultures. She sits with STUDENTALK Magazine to discuss her past as well as her purpose of visiting, which was for training with the Public Authority for Applied Education in Training (PAAET) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). Tell us about yourself. I am a mother of four grown children; 3 sons and a daughter. Three of my children are entrepreneurs as they still hold on to a regular job as well. Since my husband passed away, I have decided to begin a new life and see where it takes me. During my teaching years, I have been to Russia, Indonesia, and Turkmenistan and I bring all of that with me into my classrooms until today. I have been able to develop myself and grow in my field. I have trained teachers through E-Learning in courses such as ESP and Critical Thinking. I also co-developed Global Leaders and now am in the process of co-developing the International Business Communications Program. As co-director of the International Business Program, what do you offer the students? I am able to offer them cross-cultural Business communications, cultural values with Business and the need to be aware of communication. These are things that they aren’t able to get in other programs. Furthermore, International Business Research is a new road that I am taking but am considerably prepared for. Most of it is targeted towards International Students and there will be five courses in it. Once these courses are completed, they are given a certificate to demonstrate proficiency in it. It is a wonderful program that gives the students skills that they aren’t able to learn any other way as we focus on real-life situations and how to tackle them or how to use certain tools. You come here with vast experience in many countries, what do you think is lacking in Kuwait in regards to education? It is important to note that I was pleasantly surprised at the proficiency level of the teachers! They are all great teachers at the schools and Arabs have always been known to have good proficiency. I give them reflective essays and, through that, I am able to see their writing skills a little bit but aren’t able to fully judge simply based on that. Changes do need to be taken though, which is hard. Curriculum changes are needed in order to give flexibility to the teachers and allow them to try out well-founded methods and move a little away from only using the textbooks offered.

46

How was the training week with PAAET? I thoroughly enjoyed it! Dr. Alham there really wants what is best for the students. Our training was on ESP and we saw that there were some wanted changes for the improvement of the curriculum. They have been teaching EGP more than ESP, which also needs to be changed. You have recently begun your training with the MOE, how is that so far? So far with MOE, things are actually going very well. They are mostly secondary teachers in the morning then supervisors during my night classes. We talk about projects and portfolios. It gives a different feel when compared to the PAAET schools though. Lastly, is there anything that you would like to tell our readers? Choose what is of high character, don’t lower your standards. There is so much garbage thrown at us and we have to work through it and aim high. Holding onto what is valuable is really important. Also, value relationships that are real spend time with real people and not through other means such as social media.

Mr. Elias Ghosn Head of Balmain Watches

Mr. Elias Ghosn has established himself in the industry and was able to visit the country where he began his illustrious career: Kuwait. STUDENTALK was able to sit with him in order to find out more about his journey and his future plans as head of Balmain Watches. Tell us about yourself My name is Elias Ghosn and I’ve been working with Balmain watches for over about twelve years and I started my career in Kuwait twenty years ago! I’ve been the head of Balmain for over three years now and I try visit Kuwait every now and then. This time, we are here with Miss Switzerland to have our event and it was very successful. What got you interested in getting into watches? I started my career in cosmetics and perfumes, which isn’t too far from the watch industry. In 2003, I was head hunted and decided to discover the watch industry. I loved the brand and felt as though it was a brand that focuses on emotions and, being an emotional person myself, it really got to me. I felt like it was a part of me and have been enjoying it a lot since then. What are your future expectations for the company? This year was a tough year in general for the industry. In order to maintain our position in different markets, we had to work even harder than we did before. So far, we are satisfied especially in the Middle East, which we consider a major market for us and our position in this market was positive. In regards to the future and in order to continue maintaining our position and to gain even more market share, we have to be innovative, launch new models, and continue the way we were in terms of price and quality. Here, we are extremely strong and the results are very positive so far. What lessons have you learnt along the way from the first day that you started your career? Life is a lesson and therefore for me, everyday is a new day and everyday is a new experience and a new lesson. Of course, with time, you gain more maturity such as when I moved to Switzerland, I became a calmer and more focused person. Every place that I lived in made

48

me learn more and more. Personally, it’s great because I have been able to live in places in the Middle East and Europe. I like to mix between both cultures. We live and we learn and, for me, life is a school. What is something that has impacted you the most in all this time? It’s never enough. Whenever I take a new challenge, I keep the fact in my mind that I want to achieve a certain goal. Since I am an emotional person, I tend to use that and it helps me come out with the goal I want. When it comes to working with the team on new models , there is the moment that you see the ‘new born’ is out and that the clients who are buying our product are satisfied, that is a moment that truly satisfies me as well. It is never enough though and I try to maintain this type of satisfaction. How do you see the scene in Kuwait in regards to watches? I started my career in Kuwait and I know the market here extremely well. When I was here a long time ago, I wasn’t in the watch industry but for the past five or six years, I have been visiting Kuwait a lot more frequently. The Kuwaiti market is extremely interesting because the clients here travel a lot, especially during the summer since it’s very hot so they go to places like Europe and the US. With that, they tend to see the different collections that are available. For us to be consistent in the market, we need to be a little different than the competition. We spent a lot of time with the team in Kuwait in order to come out with the correct product for the clients in this part of the world. Anything else to add for our readers? We are very happy to be here. Since the Kuwait market and our partnership with Behbehani are important, we decided to come here and visit the market. We wanted to make the event to show how important this market is to us and we hope to be here again next year!

12 Degrees Tips for Your Home

You finally have a place but you still can’t call it your own? Having trouble remodeling your space? Or just plain scared and feeling that interior designing isn’t for you? Well, don’t let these negative thoughts drag you down because 12 Degrees will give you simple tips that can help inspire you into making that place your Home. What is the function of the room you are planning to decorate? While you are planning the project, it is important to think about what the room will be used for and how many people will be using this room. When planning an interior-design project, it is essential that you choose the right colors. This is where it all begins. Your color scheme must work together. You do not want your color scheme to make the room appear too busy. So if you want to make a room look bigger, use softer and lighter colors. An apartment, in particular, benefits well from this type of technique. And if you want it to look cozy, warm or small, then darker colors will help give you that feel. The right colors are essential to creating the illusion of space. When hanging pictures, try to group like subjects and frames together. The collection should be the focal point of the room and arranged within the bounds of an imaginary larger frame; incorporating each piece inside with the intent of complementing the other and all of them working in artistic harmony. Avoid clutter while designing at all costs. It is impossible to relax in your home if the environment is as hectic and frenzied. So whether the problem is too much furniture or too little storage, overcrowded and busy spaces need to be streamlined and simplified in order to function. A simple trick used by interior-design specialists is to install flooring that has a reflective surface. This will make any rooms appear larger than they really are. The light that is available will reflect off of the flooring and illuminate the room making them appear larger and more welcoming. Use decorative mirrors to make a small space feel larger.Mirrors can also be used to add instant light to your living space. For larger rooms, or any room with a more limited amount of natural light, mirrors placed directly across from the windows, will add instant light. Large or small, mirrors add light and dimension to your living space.

Counting Calories As Easy as 1, 2, 3...

HEALTH

For many years now, counting calories has be the “go-to” tool when people decide to lose weight. Why? Well, the reasoning is quite simple: It’s healthy and it’s effective! Calorie counting is extremely easy but, unfortunately, it may get a little bit difficult when you’re mixing a few ingredients together, such as a burger or a delicious home-cooked meal.

To get to the main point of calorie counting, we have to start at the extreme beginning and ask ourselves, what is a calorie count? As you can see on many of the food you purchase, there is a calorie count on it. That number tells you how much potential energy the food contains. This is measured with a device known as a calorimeter. It is no secret that food contains energy and the calorie count tells us how much energy it could have. The human body needs energy to survive and it gets them from two sources: The food you eat and the energy that it stores, mainly in the form of fat and muscle. Therefore, if your body uses the energy from the food that you have just eaten, then it no longer needs to use from the energy that is stored, which is how you gain weight in the end. This isn’t to say that you should not eat, this is just another reason that calorie counting could be the right way to go since you would be giving your body the amount of energy it needs rather than forcing to store extra as fat. Here are some tips and advice that you need to keep in mind if you decide to take the road of counting calories: Start Small When you’re about to eat a meal, don’t completely fill your plate! Start off with a small portion size and, if you are truly hungry afterwards, then you’re more than welcome to have seconds. Don’t make it a must though! Eat from plates, not packages Eating directly from a package makes you lose track of exactly ho much you’re eating. Putting the food on a plate gives you a much better estimate of how much food you’re having and it also helps you keep your portion sizes small. Check food labels Be sure you always check the Nutrition Facts in

52

order to find the serving size and the calories per serving. This is difficult for you to just guess on your own and, more times than not, you will find yourself actually eating two or three servings and therefore incorrectly counting your calories. Use a calorie counter There are many websites that will help you count calories and therefore you are able to use them in order to count them correctly. One great tool is the SuperTracker, which you can find on ChooseMyPlate.gov. Do you love smartphone applications? Well, try out MyFitnessPal, it is also a wonderful way for you to count your calorie intake. Set realistic goals When it comes to changes such as weight loss using calorie counting, don’t expect a drastic change in a small period of time. These things take a while and you shouldn’t let that discourage you. With that said, you will begin seeing changes soon but reaching your goal will need time. Don’t completely count on it! This is probably the most important part of it all. It is vital to remember that, even though you are counting calories, it is part of a larger plan to lose weight. Exercise and good rest are also things that you will need to focus on if you are to reach your ideal weight. Calorie counting isn’t really that difficult, it just requires a little extra concentration and motivation and you should be good to go! It has been proven to help many people around the world reach the weight goal that they had set for themselves while it has actually become a habit for others. One thing is for sure though: There is no going wrong with calorie counting if you are able to do it the correct way!

Apple's New Releases It's Time to get Excited Again!

Gadgets

Earlier in September, Apple announced a few new products that will be released and, now that we are in October, everything is available for you! They spoke about the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Pro, and iOS 9 as well as other things that will get their customers extremely excited.

iPhone 6s & 6s Plus The new iPhones from Apple come in three different colors: Silver, Gold, and Grey as well as the usual three different capacities, which are 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB. The new iPhones come out with the much-anticipated 3D Touch! It will mainly be used in swiping between applications. Sensors are embedded in the display which can provide details of how hard you press by measuring the distance between screen cover and display panel.

In regards to using in on your iPad, you can now have split view, slide over, and Picture in Picture in order to help you get a lot more productive with using it. The new Quicktype features makes formatting and text selection more accessible as they are right at your fingertips. Siri is fully renovated as your search screen is now already prepared with contacts, applications, places nearby, and a lot more. Also, the answers that you get are now more intelligent and a lot more helpful as well.

Apple has also made a lot of improvements in regards to the camera as it has added the allnew 12MP iSight Camera along with the flash unlike the previous 8MP camera. Many people were hoping to see a front flash as well but the retina display on the screen makes that very unnecessary right now. Last but not least, the phone also comes with iOS 9 already installed in it as well!

iPad Pro The iPad Pro comes with numerous new and improved additions that will continue helping the user. It comes with a retina display as the 12.9-inch screen makes everything that you are used to doing a lot easier. Furthermore, as expected, it comes with iOS 9 already installed in it, including the easy-to-use multi tasking feature that people will automatically fall in love with.

iOS 9 The iOS 9 comes with many great features for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch! The notes application is now completely improved as the user can now make quick checklists, add a photo, add a map, or even sketch using your finger! As if that wasn’t enough, changes to your notes will automatically be updated across all your devices thanks to iCloud.

The iPad Pro comes with a variety of built-in applications that make it extremely easy to do the essential day-to-day necessities while you can find a lot more on the App Store. It’s quite difficult to find anything that you CAN’T do with Apple’s new creation.

The iCloud Drive is an application built into the iOS 9, which practically allows you to access any file you save on your iCloud from just one place. You can browse all your files by date, name, or tags that you added to your Mac.

The most major addition though is the Apple Pencil (which you have to get separately). Apple made sure that the customer already practically knows how to use the Apple Pencil before even purchasing it as they have made it extremely easy to use and is as comfortable as using a normal pencil!

Security has also been taken into consideration with their all-new six-digit code as opposed to their four-digits. Even though some people may find that quite annoying, it will be something that the user can get used to quickly and it definitely provides a lot more security for the customer.

Somehow, Apple continues to exceed our every expectation and they have done it yet again with their new releases. They will surely continue to improve and it’s certainly going to be difficult for all you tech-lovers not to at least try to get your hands on some of their new releases!

The Google Self-Driving Project What is it? Why does it matter?

Cars

Take a minute and think about this: Imagine a world where everyone is able to get around safely and extremely easy, regardless on their ability to drive… With that in mind, many things are automatically solved such as aging women who are no longer able to drive, or even people with certain disabilities as they no longer have to feel dependant on others to take them around!

Now, Self-Driving Cars are still very much a theory and it hasn’t been completely implemented yet in the world. With that said, Google has been able to take it to another level with their Google Self-Driving Project. Even though this has been finalized to a certain extent, there are still many questions that need to be answered. Well, here are many of the answers to the questions that you may already have. How does the car know where it is? Google assures that the car uses both, map and sensor information, to know where it is exactly in the world. It will know which street it is on while also knowing the lane it’s moving in. This way, it avoids any unexpected problems with direction while also avoiding any potential accidents with other cars or pedestrians trying to cross the street. What happens exactly? The software that is installed in the car will be able to predict things before it happens. It can easily predict if, for example, a pedestrian will cross the street or if another car will be cutting you off on the road. This is particularly important to know since many people will always be extremely worried incase the car is not able to stop or turn on time. According to Google, they stress the quick reaction time and the strong sensors that are available in their Self-Driving Car. What is in a Self-Driving Car? Google are still working towards making the necessary tweaks and changes so that they can completely guarantee safety when people are using it. Their main goal is working towards vehicles that can take you anywhere you want to go with a push of a button. They began by adding components to existing vehicles then designed a new prototype from the ground up in order to explore all the needed parts of it. For example, the steering wheels and driving pedals are gone as they added the software and sensors instead. As you can see, this is all still in the design phase as Google continue to do everything in their power to make this vehicle as safe as it could possibly be. It may take some time but it will surely be worth it in the end. The question now is: Will selfdriving cars be a trend soon? Well, it’s too early to tell right now but anything is possible!

Watches

The Biennale di Venezia and Jaeger-LeCoultre are pleased to announce that the great American director Brian De Palma received the Venice International Film Festival’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker 2015 Award, dedicated to personalities who have made particularly original contributions to contemporary cinema.

Chiara Mastroianni specially flew to Venice to award Brian De Palma on September 9th at 9.30 p.m. in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema) during the 72nd Venice International Film Festival (September 2-12, 2015), directed by Alberto Barbera and organized by the Biennale chaired by Paolo Baratta. Following the award ceremony, the 72nd Film Festival presented the world premiere, Out of Competition, of the documentary De Palma (109’) by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow. The film grew out of the two directors’ spending time with Brian De Palma for over ten years. It’s an intimate conversation between filmmakers, chronicling Brian’s six decade long career, his life, and his filmmaking process.

actors Brian De Palma has directed, three have received Oscar nominations: Sissy Spacek (best actress, Carrie), Piper Laurie (best supporting actress, Carrie) and Sean Connery (best supporting actor, The Untouchables), who received the Oscar for his performance. Jaeger-LeCoultre has been a sponsor of the Venice International Film Festival for eleven years, and for nine years has sponsored the Glory to the Filmmaker Award. In the past years, the prize has been awarded to Takeshi Kitano (2007), Abbas Kiarostami (2008), Agnès Varda (2008), Sylvester Stallone (2009), Mani Ratnam (2010), Al Pacino (2011), Spike Lee (2012), Ettore Scola (2013) and James Franco (2014).

This major award consolidates the important bond between the Venice Film Festival and Brian De Palma, who has presented seven movies at the Lido, the first time forty years ago with Sisters in the section Proposte di nuovi film (1975). In 1981, De Palma screened Blow Out in the section Mezzogiorno/ Mezzanotte; in 1987, The Untouchables, an out-of-competition Special Event; in 1992, Raising Cain, the closing film in competition; in 2006, The Black Dahlia, the opening film in competition; in 2007, Redacted, in competition and the winner of the Silver Lion; and in 2012, Passion, in competition. Chelsea What's going on?

Chelsea started this season with very clear high expectations as they have just come out of winning the English Premier League the season before. There weren’t many massive changes in the squad and the addition of players such as Pedro from FC Barcelona have shown that there would be a promising year ahead.

In addition to bringing Pedro in from Barcelona, they have also acquired the services of Asmir Begovic from Stoke City and Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco. Even though Falcao is a risky purchase, they brought him on loan. As for departures, their biggest one was Petr Cech to Arsenal but, even then, he wasn’t a regular starter last season with Thibaut Courtois being preferred over him. So, what’s going wrong with Chelsea? The manager, Jose Mourinho, has had a lot of praise and criticisms during his career but this is all very new to him as he has never seen the team he manages reach so low in the table. It has only been a few games but coming out with four points from a possible 15 is simply astonishing, especially when you look at most of the teams they have faced: They drew against Swansea City then had a shocking 3-0 loss to Manchester City before finally recording their first win of the year against West Bromwich Albion in a 3-2 victory. Things didn’t get better though as two losses followed, which were against Crystal Palace and Everton. People have gone on and blamed individual players such as Branislav Ivanovic for the misery the team is going through but it’s practically impossible to blame a single person in a run of 5 poor matches. The way I see it, the team is to blame and I think that there was a slight problem of over-confidence. Chelsea came into the season as favorites and probably felt as though they can easily win against any of the ‘smaller’ teams in the league with barely any problems. Reality has hit them very hard and they will have to find a way out of this as soon as possible. Of course, this is all putting aside all of the problems that the manager has faced with the medical staff of the team as he fired them after he felt that they weren’t able to do their jobs professionally on the pitch. Things are just going wrong in the Chelsea corner right now but don’t let that distract you from how good they can truly be once they get their problems in order!

58

Jose Mourinho is one of the best in the business and we can practically guarantee that he will find one way or another for the team to come out of the rut that they are in. There is still a lot of time to go and anything is possible but, the sooner that they begin getting themselves back into winning ways, the higher their chance of achieving their goals for the season.

Will Mourinho have to bench some of the players he depended on so much the season before? Well, it remains to be seen but one thing is for sure: Mourinho will make any changes that he thinks are necessary in order to come out with the desired results.

Financial Fair Play Explaining the Basics

Financial Fair Play (FFP) is fairly new into the world of European Football as it has finally been approved by UEFA in 2010 and put into full effect in 2011. Since then, clubs that have qualified for UEFA competitions have to prove that they don’t have overdue payables towards other clubs, their players, and social/tax authorities through the season.

In a nutshell, they have to prove that they have been able to pay all their bills. Furthermore, since 2013, the football clubs are also required to balance their spending with their revenues and it restricts clubs from accumulating debts. The clubs are allowed to spend up to 5 million Euros more than they earn in each assessment period, which happens every three years. This in itself prevents the build-up of unsustainable debt. Now, many people were wondering whether sponsorships or the owner injecting money into the club will make it easier. Here is how UEFA explains that point:

should not be enforced but I personally see it as a great help for football. Now, it will be a lot more difficult (not impossible though) for some of the big clubs to make maga-money bids for players that they want like we saw with Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. Also, the ‘smaller’ clubs will be able to have a higher chance of keeping their best players,

which in turn can potentially help them improve instead of having to sell their good players every year to the ‘bigger clubs’

“If a club’s owner injects money into the club through a sponsorship deal with a company to which he is related, then UEFA’s competent bodies will investigate and, if necessary, adapt the calculations of the break-even result for the sponsorship revenues to the level which is appropriate (‘fair value’) according to market prices.” There are significant differences when you compare different clubs and countries in terms of the wealth that they have. Well, the aim of FFP is not to try and make the clubs and countries equal in size but rather to encourage them to build for success rather than simply finding a ‘quick fix’. In a quick and basic summary, that is what the Financial Fair Play is all about. Unfortunately, it may also force clubs to sell certain players since they will be needing money for other transfers or debts that they will have to cover. We were able to see that happen during the last summer transfer window when Mateo Kovacic had to be sold from Inter Milan to Real Madrid because the Italian club reached a point that they had to cover costs. Roberto Mancini, the manager of Inter Milan, made it very clear that they really did not want to see Kovacic but had to since Real Madrid were able to make a very significant bid for the Croatian midfielder and it was practically impossible to say no to that. There are some people who feel that FFP

FIFA Corruption A Look into the Scandal

During the past few months, a lot has been happening in regards to FIFA as a lot of the people involved in the organization have gotten sentenced to jail time due to taking bribes or bribing others for favorable results. For the past couple years, a lot has been talked about how corrupt FIFA truly is but it has exceeded many of our expectations and it continues to do so with more evidence being found very recently. Because of everything, it has become very chaotic and slightly misunderstood so here is a quick brief as to what is exactly going on. This all began on May 27, 2015 as Swiss police raided a luxury hotel in Zurich and ended up arresting seven of FIFA’s top executives. Fourteen current and former FIFA officials and officials were indicted on charges of “rampant, systematic, and deep-rooted” corruption following a major inquiry by the FBI. Of course, it hasn’t stopped there as an increase of allegations and investigations have happened since then. The FBI has been investigating FIFA for about three years and was initially sparked after the bidding process for the Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 World Cup, but after finding a lot of illegal things in that, the search has now widened to the past 20 years. One of the main questions here is, who was accused exactly? In a nutshell, the most senior figures in the US indictment accuses are football powerbrokers in North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean. One of the people arrested, Jack Warner, decided to turn himself in while he was in Trinidad and was granted bail. In addition to that, he televised a political address where he stated that he was no longer prepared to “keep secrets for them who actively try destroying the country” while adding that he knew things about certain FIFA transactions which are not limited to the President, Sepp Blatter. The main point that he tried to bring across though was that he truly started to feel for his life but “not even death can stop the avalanche that is coming!” This rang bells all over the place. No longer was it people trying to find anything against FIFA but rather there is now someone who was once the Vice-President of the organization coming out in public and saying that there is so much information that he has AND he is willing to tell it? Everyone was ready to listen and see what exactly has been going on behind the scenes at the FIFA headquarters and Jack Warner was ready to say it all… Will Sepp Blatter find yet another way to come out of this unscathed? Where was he?

60

‫أخبار كرة القدم األوروبية‬

Here is the most important part of it all: Sepp Blatter. During a lot of this time, the President of FIFA was trying to stay behind the scenes as much as he possibly could but, as you would expect, it didn’t last too long. On May 29, Sepp Blatter somehow got re-elected as FIFA President even though there was a lot of criticism surrounding him and his position. The fact that he was able to get re-elected caused even more controversy but, then again, the fact that he actually ran for re-election was shocking in itself. Four days after Blatter was re-elected, he announced his resignation though and said that is was because of all the allegations surrounding him, whether true or not. However, he will continue to serve as the President until a new election is conducted in a 2016 FIFA Extraordinary Congress. Even though a lot has happened so far, there is no denying that this whole situation isn’t even close to being finalized. Many top FIFA officials are being looked into until today with new evidence expected to be coming out quite soon. This corruption in football really needs to end soon as it is quickly ruining a game that millions of people around the world love and follow on a daily basis. With this corruption, it gives the game a bad name while the players have no say in what is exactly going on with the governing bodies. Will the corruption completely end? I highly doubt it but arresting the people who are involved in it now will make the future leaders of the organization become extra cautious on trying anything like this again.
