Dear Students, Have you ever thought of the art of pushing and pulling? No, I am not talking about haggling with a poor seller on the street, nor am I talking about professional negotiations. I am referring to our day to day lives where we have to push and pull with our family, our friends, our colleagues and most importantly... ourselves! Yes... have you ever thought of the dynamics you have to exert on yourself to bring out the best in you!? Have you ever applied your push and pull skills on yourself? You see, for me, I used to know only how to push! I used to push myself so hard every day, every hour of the day, every minute of the hour that by the end of the day I would be literally and completely exhausted! And I used to push those around me with the same tenacity...And they would get exhausted by me, exasperated really... So one day I decided to stop. I went from 100% pushing to completely pulling out. I stopped pushing others and only concentrate on pushing myself. Needless to say...a couple of years of continuously pushing myself, I drove myself to what is commonly known as a burn out. Luckily, as I have studied psychology, I was able to identify the symptoms and did not allow them to change the course of my life. Yet they surely changed the way I viewed and conducted my life! To be at either 100 or 0 is considered a disorder, as the ultimate results and the best optimization comes from the variances between these two extremes..the golden middle.. So my students, next time you are pushing yourself, recognize when you need to pull, and when you feel yourself too pulled out, push yourself again, master the art, for indeed it is one. Till the next issue,

Zeina Mokaddam

Mohammed Mukamis Turning Ideas into Reality

“It is not the beauty of a building that you should look at, it’s the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time” – David Allen Coe. There are many different details that go into every single building you see around you. We sit with an aspiring architect, Mohammed Mukamis, to get more of an insight into his life and his decision to study architecture.

‫قصة الغالف‬

Tell us a little bit about yourself My name is Mohammed Loai Mukamis and I’m a fifth year Architecture student at Kuwait University. I’ve participated and managed many organizations in KU such as The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS-KU), Arch-ive (an architectural publication) and The Yearbook. What made you get into your major? I have always liked to design and build models of buildings when I was a kid. Later in school, I began to question the design of buildings in Kuwait, which made me want to learn more about architecture and I liked it! How would you describe your experience in KU in regards to your major? It is a five-year program, full of fun, sleepless and tension-filled nights but this is what makes it amazing. I’ve learned a lot from the faculty and made new friends that are more like a family to me now. It is definitely an experience that I will never forget. What are your future plans? Hopefully, my plan in the future is to graduate from architecture school and continue on master’s degree and a PhD in architectural design or urban planning. Who do you look up to in the world of Architecture? I look up to Zaha Hadid because I really like the way she thinks. Her designs are always out of the box. What are your thoughts regarding “Movember”? I totally support the cause. I really admire those who grow their breads for Movember and show their support for such an amazing cause. Anything else that you would like to add for our readers? My advice to all the students who are interested in studying architecture is to research and ask about it. It is very important to know the type of major you’re studying. Also, joining student organizations are important for students to learn how things work in the professional life and it’s fun to meet new people.

Fashion Statements! By Hamed Al-Hashem Who doesn’t love winter clothes? We are getting closer and closer to the chilly season every day and the demand for men’s clothes is increasing, especially for those who care about their appearances.

There are many places in Kuwait for men who are looking to shop for the latest trends in menswear. Many malls this season have tons of stores, offering men’s suits, jackets, trousers, footwear and many cool outfits for those who are looking for a clean and formal winter look. There are also those that are offering a great line of winter collections from scarves and

jeans to jackets and blouses for those who are interested in a casual neat look. Every single thing has to be worn carefully to make it look professional and not out of style. For example, when it comes to fashion, wearing a jacket must cover your bottom, tight on your shoulders and is slim on the body (not skinny, but slim).

Also, consider accessories! Accessories depend on the preference of the individual. Some prefer to wear scarves or hats to match their clothing, and some prefer ties, belts and gloves. The most important thing is confidence. Never wear something you are not confident with. Confidence will allow you to pull off many looks even if they are out of style. Always make sure your clothes fit you, gently hugging your body. One of the most common fashion mistakes is that many men wear clothes that are too big or too small on them. One way to make this work is wearing the right size and making the clothes feel like it is gently hugging your body and not squeezing it. Another tip is to never go shopping alone. People can see you better than you see yourself, so make sure you take somebody that will give you their 100% honest opinion on how the clothes look on you. Always pay attention to details when it comes to clothing. Do not underestimate details because sometimes those details are what make the outfit eye-catching, neat and fashionable. Always go for the quality and style of the product, and not just its brand. Sometimes products with a reputable brand name don’t look as good as a product that doesn’t have a reputable brand name, which also has a great quality, fabric and style. Therefore, always buy what touches your heart and never go with the brand name over the quality. Always ask for feedback from those that you trust, and not the employees that are selling you the product because sometimes you can’t trust their opinion because their goal is to just sell the product. Ask your best friend or any of your family members! Always ask those who you trust with their honest opinion. Always experiment with different clothing and things you never tried before. You never know what you may like and what looks good on you. You never know what you may love or don’t without experimenting with different styles and accessories. Shopping for a new season can be very fun and rewarding; you just have to know how to use that time to make sure you get the right things for you.

Student Diwaniya Topic of the Month

Get Your 'Stache' On Mo-Knowledge, Movember!

Cancer is one deadly disease that many researchers have struggled with for years and are still trying to find a cure for. Movember is non-profit project that raises money for cancer patients and makes men grow their moustaches for a whole month in support.

It all started when two men, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, were at a local place and joked about bringing the ‘Mo’ back. They were inspired by a woman who was raising money for Breast Cancer and since then, they have agreed to start a campaign for men’s health and Prostate Cancer. When they started in 2003, they found 30 men that are willing to participate in this project.

In 2004, the crew decided to create a website for men who want to join. At that time, they received their first cheque with the largest single donation the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) had ever received! In 2006, the foundation receives the official Australian Charity status and launches in New Zealand before continuing to grow in various parts of the world since then.

In 2013, the Movember foundation was awarded the Social Force of the year award from GQ Australia Magazine, making it one of the most successful prostate cancer and men’s health project in the entire world. Movember was ranked in the top 500 non-governmental organizations in the world by 2014 (ranked 72nd). After its beginning in 2003, Movember has been a global project since! This project has simple rules and guidelines that men should follow: • Sign up for the program and start with a clean shaved face on the 1st of November. • Grow your moustache and groom it for 30 days until the end of November. • It has to be a moustache, no goatees and beards (they don’t count). • No cheating (No fake moustaches). • You must act like a true country gentleman for a whole month! • Raise awareness and funds for men’s health ad prostate cancer. The great thing about this project is that donations are still acceptable, even if you do not want to grow a moustache! Movember has raised $559 million since 2003 and that is only in the United States of America. Other countries who participate include Australia, Germany, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom and much more. The organization has grown successfully ever since 2003 and is one of the most well-known health organizations globally until this day with over 5 million people supporting it. If you are interested in this campaign and want to be a part of the men’s health and testicular and prostate cancer awareness, then go sign up for it and start with a clean shaven face on the 1st of November! Regardless of where you live, you can be a part of something big, something that will help change the face of men’s health. You can sign up on their website and be a part of something great. www.uk.movember.com/register

Talent Competition

www.studentalk-online.com

Take a look at our two competing talents for this month, Michel and AbdulMajid! To know more about them and watch their videos, make sure to check them out and vote on our website! Tell us more about yourself My name is Michel Youssef and I am an Accounting major at the Arab Open University. Furthermore, I work as a service advisor at Chevrolet. What is your talent? My talent is freestyle football, which is basically tricks with a football, while incorporating other disciplines like basketball and breakdancing - to create a unique “spart” as I like to call it. It is a sport as well as an art. I have been doing it and developing my talent for around 7 years now.

normally have trouble in the summer finding a room to rent with AC so we can train. Oh and of course the odd security guard kicking us out of public areas for training! Any last words for the readers? Keep doing what you love and what you are passionate about. Never ever give up - hard work always pays off in the end. There will always be people telling you that you can’t do something. Your job is to show them and prove them wrong. You will make it, put your mind to it and just keep going. I believe in you!

How did you develop your talent? I developed it by practicing over and over again... You know what they say, practice makes perfect! Social media channels such as YouTube has helped alot. Our freestyle community is relatively small so we share videos with one other, get feedback and learn. It is great because it helps us motivate each other to keep improving! What are your future plans? My future plans are to pursue a Masters degree after I graduate - either in Kuwait or abroad. I will of course, keep freestyling. It is my outlet and my passion. It helps me relieve any stress I have in life. It will always be a constant for as long as my legs will let me! Who supported your talent? My friends and my family - especially my Mom. They would keep pushing me and encouraging me to keep at it and pursue my passion of freestyle. I also get motivation and joy from the audience as I would do my shows. All these people in my life make me want to train harder and keep going. Did you encounter any obstacles? I definitely did! When I first started freestyle, people didn’t like what I was doing and thought that I was just wasting my time. They would always have negative remarks to say and would always tell me to go do something useful with my life. They would make fun or laugh at me telling me to stop kicking a ball up and down like a clown. Other than that, us freestylers

Michel vs. AbdulMajid www.studentalk-online.com

Tell us more about yourself My name is AbdulMajid El-Kassem and I’m 21 years old. My major is Communications & Media and my minor is Graphic Design. My hobbies include photography, videographer and editing video and, like most people, I enjoy watching movies & TV shows. What is your talent? My talent is acting. Ever since I was a child I’ve always had a fascination with acting and how the film/TV industry worked, I never thought I’d get a shot at trying it until I began University. What I love about it is that it gives you an escape from reality and allows you to be someone else for a while, and you’re allowed to do whatever you’d like with this character and experience a life outside of your own.

would think, she taught me that acting is an form of art and showcasing it to peoples a beautiful thing. Did you encounter any obstacles? Of course every actor experiences difficulties and obstacles. My biggest obstacle was balancing university life with acting and rehearsals. Whether you have midterm, a final or a huge presentation to finish, you have to be able to come to rehearsal with a clear mind and be able to become the character.

Any last words for the readers? I would like to tell them to try new things. Although it might seem scary at first, it would be worth it at the end, If something is intriguing and you really want to try it. Just do it. You have nothing to lose and you will gain nothing but experience and grow in the process.

How did you develop your talent? I joined a drama class at AUK. At first I worked backstage, helping with various props costumes and things like that. Watching students perform in front of people had me thinking “I can do that!” so the next semester I auditioned and got in. Although it was a small role and it was the first time I’d ever perform in front of people, I loved it! The semester after that, I auditioned again and got a bigger role, this time I played the lead character’s son, this character got a huge reaction from the audience because of his funny antics. This encouraged me to audition again for the next play, this time I would get one of the lead roles and face new challenges. What are your future plans? Hopefully I would pursue acting in my future, maybe get small roles here and there on TV. And then that would transition to bigger things. I am not shooting for the moon yet and saying I would see myself in Hollywood in 5 years, but one can dream can’t they? Who supported your talent? Everyone around me supported me. From family to friends, they all attended my plays and watched me act. My biggest supporter though was my Drama professor and Director of all the plays, Dr Kathy Downs. She encouraged me to get out of my shell and try new things with acting and not be afraid of what people

The Forge Gym Now Open in Shuwaikh!

Another gym has just opened in Kuwait and there are some exciting things in store! Located in Shuwaikh, The Forge gym has a lot of different opportunities for their members. We sit with the owner, Fawaz Al-Qanae to find out exactly what we can expect from them. Tell us about this new gym The Forge is an (FMA) Strength and Conditioning Facility that has an emphasis on Rehab. Why did you decide to open in Shuwaikh? Opening in Shuwaikh was not really a difficult decision as the location was chosen for several Factors such size and target Market. What differentiates you from other gyms? The major difference between us and other gyms is our initial assessment under FMA standards, which means that we can bridge the gap between the Rehab world and Strength and Conditioning. We are also the only gym that offers a full indoor Calisthenics rig indoor and Professional gymnastics for Adults.

34

What do you offer? The classes we offer at the Forge are: A) Foundation class that emphasises on basic strength and conditioning. B) Calisthenics classes (Children and Adults) which is more body weight strength and conditioning based. C) Gymnastics . What are some tips you would provide to students to maintain a healthy nutritious lifestyle? The tips in this situation is quite simple: You need to move and be active while watch out for late night exam snacking. The idea is to take small or realistic steps towards being healthy and maintain it.

‫المشهد المحلي‬

So you feel that students are interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle? Why or why not? Well, I believe most students want to maintain a healthy life style. The reason I feel they don’t is due to bad knowledge or misinformation that gets passed around, regarding diets and workouts. Not everything that you read or hear about is true or best for your specific body type. It is always advised to see a professional when it comes to these types of decisions. Do you feel that being a university student makes it harder to be healthy? Not really. I have seen some full-time students that manage to go the gym and eat healthier. The key here is priority. Once you have your priorities in order, you will be able to achieve it. Do you offer classes here? Yes we do offer classes and Personal training. The classes we offer are Foundation strength, Advanced Foundation, Yoga and Calisthenics for both Beginners and Advanced. What can a member of the gym expect from it? Education and results! We believe in the education of the client, there is no one program that works for everyone so understanding your limitations and strengths will help greatly in achieving your goals.

Adel Al-Qattan Introducing 'Qattana' and his upcoming album

Adel Al-Qattan has been into music for many years as picking up the guitar for the first time was the moment that changed his life and made him the person that he is today. STUDENTALK sits with him to get an insight into his life and his future plans. Tell us about yourself My name is Adel Al-Qattan and I’m from Kuwait. I work at the Kuwait National Museum and have been playing guitar for about 16 years. I’ve played with many bands around Kuwait including Switchback, Divine Disorder, and Kalendi to name a few. What made you get into the world of music? When I was young, I was a big fan of cartoons. I watched animation from all over the world and there was a wonderful diversity of music in their soundtracks. I loved that the music made me feel a certain way and that has stayed with me ever since. Now it has become such a big part of who I am that I can’t imagine not being musically active in some way.

46

What inspired you to start playing the guitar? After the war in the early 90s, one of my best friends had an older brother who was into a lot of rock music. We used to sneak into his room to listen to his CDs and pretend we were playing his guitars. This kind of music grew on me until I felt I needed to express myself in a similar way. I campaigned for a while for my parents to let me have a guitar, which they reluctantly agreed to. Since then I’ve grown and matured musically, going many genres but always remaining inside of them through my instrument. What are your thoughts on playing live music in Kuwait? It’s a different experience than almost anywhere

else in the world. Between the societal and legal constrains, it’s difficult to achieve any success. But like anything else; where there is a will, there is a way. I’ve been fortunate enough to play with so many musical collectives that have niche markets and in doing so have played so many different kinds of shows around Kuwait. What are you currently working on? I am currently finishing up my first solo album which will be released before the end of the year and also doing some guitar work for Omar Afuni’s upcoming album. I hope to continue playing live shows at the frequency that I am now and that requires consistently being up to date with what’s popular and being able to recreate it in some capacity live.

‫المشهد المحلي فنان الشهر‬

Tell us about your upcoming album. The album is going to be an EP of 6 songs. The style is generally hard rock but there are influences from many different genres and the vocals will be done by none other than Omar Afuni. I hope that this album will achieve some level of success as it is written to a greater audience than the music I usually compose. I plan to release it on Bandcamp either for free or whatever the consumer feels it’s worth. They have the choice, if they like it and feel they would like to support any of my future music productions, they can do so. Otherwise it’s there for everyone to enjoy or delete, no strings attached. What would you like to see happening in the local music scene in the future? Like all the other musicians, I would like to see a more open and free music scene where we can do what we love without all the peripheral worries. Kuwait used to be a cultural hub in the region during the 70s and I look forward to that history repeating itself with all the fresh talent that this society has produced. I also hope to see a more competitive musical environment which will push local musicians to reaching new heights of excellence. Although there is a lot of talent around town, there needs to be a better overall standard of what is acceptable to present to an audience greater than just family and friends. Any last words for our readers? Work hard and be the best that you can be at whatever you love to do.

US Graduate Programs What you Need to Know!

For many people, studying doesn’t stop once they graduate from their universities. Furthermore, a lot of people find that the United States is a great destination for continuing their education as they look to come out with an MBA or any other higher education certificate. STUDENTALK sat with David Green, Director of Graduate Admissions, Outreach and Enrollment Management at the Kogod School of Business at American University in Washington, D.C. and Ghiyath Nakshbendi, Executive-in-Residence at the Kogod School of Business. What can students expect from the graduate schools in Washington DC? There are a few things that students can expect; first of all, there is more exposure there since the system itself is very different. Also, they have some great opportunities for internships and mingling with students from various parts of the world. There are many research institutions (Think tanks) that the students can learn from as well. Washington DC is an ideal place with many different Non-Governmental Organizations and has a wonderful job economy. Networking is vast there in terms of reach. What is the process to get in? Ideally, you should begin the process about 18-24 months before graduating so that you have time to pick your options and decide on which institutions are best for you. Take the GMAT or GRE twice at least and do your best on the essay questions that we ask. Ask yourself; what is your end goal? Why should a student from Kuwait choose to study in the US? In the US, they deal with the individual as a whole, which creates self-confidence. They also encourage students to be more outspoken and offer counseling on a weekly basis with the Professors to stay up-to-date. To a certain extent, the students have a say in their grades as the grading also focuses on participation and assignments rather than strictly on the final exams for example. How important is it to stick to the deadlines? Schools have different deadlines. As for the American University, people need to know that even though there are three deadlines, but that doesn’t mean that you should wait until then especially if you’re looking to apply for a scholarship. Have different options as well ranging from your safety schools and focus on three or four realistic destinations as well so you have the opportunity to choose with ease.

50

Anything else you would like to add? Ghiyath Nakshbendi: Students from the Gulf region, particularly Kuwait are excellent and natural-born leaders. I am very confident that they will do great things once they’re back in their country. Kuwaiti’s are businessmen by nature and all we need to do is polish their genetics. David Green: We have a dynamic collaboration amongst students and faculty as the students genuinely care about their place. They are unique students and are eager to offer what they can. Thank you to the US Embassy for arranging this interview.

The Protégés Roundtable Generation 5 - In Their Own Words

Founded in 2010, The Protégés have just graduated their 5th generation. Established with a mission to nurture the potential of the youth through a diverse program of workshops, activities, travel, first-hand experience and group work to encourage them to broaden their horizons, break free of their comfort zones, stimulate their minds and promote self awareness, we caught up with some of the graduating generation to find out how the process was for them, and where they benefitted. What inspired you to apply to The Protégés? What did you hope to achieve through your involvement? Boshra Yasser: I liked the energy in the program, you can feel it from the Instagram account every post make you feel great and more energetic.I hope to graduate from the program and become a part of it. I want to be something big in the future so I hope that my experience in the program can help me. Shaha Al-Hunaidi: The giant inside me personally inspired me to join The Protégés, trusting that by the end of the six week program, the giant will no longer hide inside me, but will be me. Jasim Burhamah: I was intrigued by the word ‘self-awareness’ I read on the site and the reviews from previous Protégés. Dana Al-Hamdan: My need for guidance inspired me to apply for the program. The mentors were my main reason for applying.I wanted to share experiences with all the mentors and the students - and we did that. What I hoped to achieve is to increase my confidence, to know exactly what I’m good at and exactly what I want, and I hoped to be more aware about everything.

Boshra Yasser

Shaha Al-Hunaidi

Jasim Burhamah

Dana Al-Hamdan

Reem Al-Shamali: I wanted to have a clearer image on what I like and dislike, and I heard The Protégés is a place I could do that. What was your personal highlight of the process? Boshra: I think there are a lot of great things in the program, and they are totally different so I don’t have anything special. Everything was amazing. Shaha: They say it’s rare to experience ‘the click’ during the program, but I did. A personal highlight would be when everything clicked and happiness was no longer a state of mind, but now, a lifestyle. Jasim: Being offered the opportunity to write a script for a film after the mentors discovered something in me.

52

‫المشهد المحلي‬

Dana: Gaining a new family, being with the mentors the whole time. Reem: The friendships I have created in The Protégés are those of family bonds that I know I will not lose. I have a strong and large support system, now. How do you feel you benefitted, personally and in a business sense, from being part of the initiative? Boshra: I didn’t have a love for business and I never understood it. I felt it’s really difficult… but that was in the past. Now I like to read about business and I feel it’s not that hard to start your own business - all you have to do is just take a risk and never regret. Shaha: Personally, this program helped me achieve myself and be more aware of everything around me and inside me. In a business sense, meeting people that are very successful in the business sector and having them share their experiences with us worked hand in hand with the business basics they provided us to successfully inform and benefit us. Jasim: I feel it has opened many doors for me. On a personal level, I am working with NLP expert mentor Mishari Al-Mufarreh to rid me of my stuttering. On a business scale, I am working with mentor YarubBourhamah on a big time movie. Dana: The program helped me in knowing my major more and gave enough tools to know how to navigate though life effectively, and the program taught me how to master teamwork and utilize every member in the group. I benefitted from the program in knowing how to work in groups for one project and how combine our ideas to serve the same message. Reem: I am aware of what I like. I am aware of how to communicate clearly with people. I am aware how important relationships are. What are the key attributes you feel are essential to successfully complete the process? Shaha: Some of the key attributes that act as a backbone to this program are the mentors, chancellors, and finally the group of fellow Protégés. The sessions and hands-on experiences also play a big role in successfully teaching The Protégés. Jasim: I feel the process could not have been completed without the presence of all of the mentors, the chancellors, the manager and Protégés that blend in to make such an amazing group. Dana: Patience, respect, self-motivation and knowing how to delegate. Reem: A person must be committed and willing to try new things that frighten him.

What are the reasons you would encourage others like you to explore involvement in The Protégés? Boshra: The Protégés is the best thing I did in my life… this is the reason. Shaha: Once you are a Protégé you have a support system that consists of more than 125 successful bright-minded people. You are automatically considered a respected and intelligent person and, most importantly, you will get the chance to discover yourself and what makes you who you are. Jasim: I would promise them that it will change their lives and their mindsets to the better just like it did mine. Dana: I want everyone who is passionate but needs a push to take this opportunity, because with the mentors and the environment around people will find a lot of things that will help them to achieve what they want. One of the reasons is that everyday is a new experience that challenges you and improves you, and this make you a better person. Reem: It helps a person become an active part of society by bettering themselves so that they could in turn better others.

Reem Al-Shamali

Has the process changed the way you view yourself? We are sure it has, so how? Boshra: I’m more confident and more social. I’m always trying to think in a different way, an out-of-the-box way. I learned that simplicity is the key. I learned it’s never to late to make something you like. I learned a lot of things that changed me. I learned to respect everything in the world - even the small things. Shaha: After the Protégés, I am my own person and I believe in myself in a way no one else ever can. The program taught me how to understand and accept myself in addition to being the happiest person I can ever be. Today, I am confident that in a couple of years, I will find myself discovering new levels of happiness no one thought existed, because the sky is not the limit, and I’m already there Jasim: I believe in myself more and more after every session. I know my skills and I know how to incorporate them, and that changed the way I look at myself in the mirror. Dana: So, the way I think now is different than before, now I know what I really want and what I’m looking for. Now I’m aware of what is good for me and what is not. Now I’m better, I found what I was searching for. Reem: Yes, it has made me more selfconfident in my abilities and aware of how to fix my weaknesses.

Fahad Al-Musallam An Exciting Year Ahead!

Fahad Al-Musallam has continued to improve and he has been preparing for an exciting 2015/ 2016 season! STUDENTALK will keep you all updated with his news throughout the year so keep your eyes open! The racing season is finally here! UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait are hosting professional events, such as Motocross, Endurocross, and Desert racing. In total there are 21 rounds, including all 4 countries. The Emirates Desert Championship consists of 5 rounds this season. This type of racing differs from the usual pure desert racing, where all riders are competing in an unknown location. Each round lasts for almost 2 hours, and covers approximate distance of 100KM. There is an additional day, where a non-championship navigational rally will be run right after the 5th round, to give competitors a taste of longer endurance style events and training to build up for the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, an internationall renowned race. The Qatar International Endurocross Championship consists of 4 rounds. The races are designed to test the endurance and desert riding skills, by mixing Enduro with Motocross. Each race will be run over different types of terrain and will last for 30 minutes. Kuwait and Bahrain Motocross championships consist of a total of 12 rounds. Both countries host similar types of events. All riders will be battling, taking off huge jumps, and bursting out of corners in a total of 20 minutes. This is also considered a closed course type of race. In order to be fully prepared, Fahad has spent countless hours training at Concrete gym, and hitting laps at the practice track on board his Yamaha YFZ450R. “Its great having to race again, I’m feeling much stronger and well prepared than the previous season. I am focusing this year to race Quads professionally and looking forward to competing in all 4 Countries.” For more news and updates, please visit: www.Titanium22.com

Kuwait Events Event-ify Yourself!

“Kuwait it so boring! There is nothing to do here!” How many times has that thought crossed your mind? Well, taking a few minutes and downloading an application will change all of that. Kuwait Events is available on Android and the Apple Store as they keep you updated with everything happening in Kuwait! STUDENTALK sits with Hussain Al-Rasheed and Khaled Nazar to find out more about it! Tell us a little about yourselves and the Kuwait Events Application. Hussain Al-Rasheed: I am the Founder and CEO of Kuwait Events. I’m 24-years old. I graduated from ACK and it began while I was a student there. At that time, Khaled returned from the US. We began wondering why there are no applications or anything that do not have events happening in Kuwait. A year later, we decided that we should make it happen. Khaled Nazar: I am the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Kuwait Events and I’m 25-years-old. I came back for a vacation from the US and we sat together to simply figure out what we can do since we had nothing in mind. Once we decided to create this application, Hussain began with the designs and features that would be in the application. When we both got jobs, we started making this application on October of 2014. Give us a description of this application. We signed the contract in October of 2014 after a lot of work and research regarding the features. What we want is to spread local events to everyone. People believe that there is genuinely nothing to do in Kuwait and we want to show them that it isn’t the case. Now, when you open the application, you will see that there is something happening almost everyday! There is more to do than visit restaurants and cafés. What gave you the idea of creating this application? We have spent countless hours in front of a screen looking at different blogs and sites for events coming up in the next week so that we can do something. It was a hassle and we wanted to create something that is easy for the user and keeps them up-to-date with everything that is going on. We reached this point when we realized that there were many events that weren’t mentioned on the websites that we visited or the accounts that we followed on Social Media.

56

‫المشهد المحلي‬

What obstacles have you faced along the way? Of course, like any other business, we have faced a few obstacles. We have to make sure that we are always up –to-date with any software updates coming up such as the iOS or Android updates. Also, when we told people that we are making an application, we got negative feedback because the reputation that Kuwaiti applications have isn’t great and people are extremely skeptical. Furthermore, it was difficult at the beginning to approach the companies but in the end I got amazing feedback from all of them and it showed how much people really want to be a part of it. Once we had enough to begin the application, we put them in the database and worked from there! Are you finding it easy to add events to the application? On average, we are able to add approximately two or three events per day and sometimes we have even more! Sometimes, I sit down for a few hours and check on events and add them to the application. There is really a lot happening in Kuwait and it’s great that we are able to know about most of the things that are happening. What do you offer? You can explore all the events happening around you based on recommendations or based on your location and the most popular events. You can also see what’s happening today as well. When clicking on the event, you will see all necessary information on it including the exact location of the event. When you click on “Attend Event”, it automatically adds it to your calendar and sets a reminder for the previous day. Anything that we should expect for the future? Based on the comments that we have received, we would like to make a few changes on the application such as the home page and also making it easier for people to navigate through the app. We also want to make it easier for people to purchase tickets through it without having to go to the coordinator’s website. In regards to registering for events, we want to make it possible for the visitor to simply click on register and the registration form is automatically filled since we already have all this information when you become a member. How can an event be added? There are two very easy ways to an event to the app: First, they can e-mail us and give us the needed details or they can simply add the event while they’re on the app as long as they are members. Once it’s added, it goes to us for approval, and then it is automatically on the app!

Dizly Let's Start Gifting!

“Dizly great gifts!” If you don’t have the Dizly application on your phones yet, then make sure you download it while you read this interview that STUDENTALK had with the Founder, Nizar Wannous, and his partner, Muneer Hanbali, as they talk about their application that will make your lives much easier! Tell us a little about yourselves. Muneer Hanbali: I’m a Virgo! A perfectionist with a strong take on where I want to go in life. I like to shake hands with the right people, build an idea from scratch and scale it. With my previous experience in consulting and business development, Nizar wanted me to Co-Found the app to optimize the user experience, develop new features and sign on vendors. So here we are, 6 months, 26 vendors and counting... Nizar Wannous: I have 10 years of banking background then I left and started my digitial agency. From there, the idea of working on a specific application entered my mind. As a family man with a child, I personally always suffer from what gifts to purchase and I spend a lot of time going around. The idea of Dizly came up and was able to have a functional prototype after some time. I started looking for a bigger team and things began solidifying as we decided to make it official and launch it last May. Give us a description of the Dizly application. Dizly is an app that enables its users to send and receive gifts all from the convenience of their smartphones. Gift from your favorite brands, share and view wish lists with your friends and family, personalize your gift with a message, photo or video and send. Now by sharing your wish lists with friends, you’re more likely to give and get gifts you actually want. Redemption is easy! Have the gift delivered to their doorstep or give them the freedom to choose with a gift card- just present your phone at the cashier’s desk and get gifted! What obstacles have you faced along the way? We are very good friends but in regards to business, we think differently even though we have the same goal. There was a lot of time spent on finding a common ground and seeing

58

GIFTING MADE EASY

‫المشهد المحلي‬

how we can go on from here. This is in regards to the business side. As for the technical side, one of the biggest obstacles is trying to get a coherent group together as there are always clashes between the designing developing teams as well since both are not always on the same wavelength. Launching into the market was also a major obstacle because it was difficult to pitch it at the time as the established brands kept telling us to grow the company first and then come back to them. Also, the finance was a problem because we needed to get finances to try scaling the business. Changing the mindset of vendors and people were big problems. People are used to shopping for themselves online but that’s not what Dizly is as we focus on buying things for other people. We want Dizly to be a place where you can do something nice for others.

We will also add a part where you can see what is left on your gift card balance, which is something that none of the vendors offer yet as the gift cards now are a one-time use only and you cannot keep any balance left over. Furthermore, we want to add delivery dates, and an upcoming user experience to make it even easier. Also, we hopefully want to strike partnerships with airlines in ‘phase three’ of the application where you can gift trips and retreats through the application. This is not available anywhere else in the world as of now.

Any final words? Through this application, you can send something to anyone even if it’s through FaceBook or Twitter when you don’t have them as friends beforehand as it goes to their direct message. Down the line, we plan to introduce more options and features. It’s free and we plan to keep it free as it’s a convenience to save you time and effort. It’s an advertisement free application and that is something that won’t change either. So, with not much more to add here, “Dizly shay yiswa!”

What special features does Dizly offer? It’s vital that you’re first to market with apps. In the initial stages, functionality and gaining users’ trust in making payments and delivery are key. Once that is accomplished and your downloads are steady, you can roll out with new features, one at a time, don’t get too excited! When we first started, we didn’t have many of the functions that we have now such as personalized videos, pictures, and messages. We had to build a solid client base. We know exactly what will be rolled out in the next year such as Group Gifting where people can pitch in together for a gift. There isn’t anything in Kuwait that focuses on gifting through an application. Kuwait is a lucrative and educated market and they’re early adopters of technology and therefore no one wants to carry gift cards around. This is important for vendors because we are reaching a point where we digitize your gift cards. We’re in a time where everything is digital, vendors need to realize that. No one wants to carry around multiple gift cards anymore. What does the future look like for Dizly? Dizly was built to be scaled and not just for Kuwait. We are setting up the logistics for outside of Kuwait in places such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Lebanon soon. With that, we want to start gifting across borders. It will be as easy as if you’re doing it locally. The functionality will not change, only the country that’s all. We want to work on strategic partnerships such as telecom companies that can get us across different countries and exposure across different places. We also want to add Dizly Credit where you have the ability to send money for Dizly and they can redeem it on the application.

Eats ''All You Need Is Love & A Burger''

As you drive along the inner roads of Mahboula, a small yet well-lit place catches your attention. The industrial look of this small place draws you in right away as you realize that you have arrived at a delicious burger spot: EATS. Owned by Abdulwahab Al-Qanai and Mohammad Al-Ghanim, ‘Eats’ is more than just another locally owned restaurant. Both owners are self-acclaimed burger fanatics who felt as though there was always something missing in every burger that they have ever had. Growing up having tried various burger hubs around the world, they decided that it’s time to make the difference themselves and there was one way to do it: Open their own restaurant. Choosing to build their restaurant in Mahboula was quite an easy task as they wanted to be amongst the competition. This is an area full of many different restaurants and being around them will help them know just how good they are! Also, the reputation of the area helped with their decision as they have some great locations there. Once the location was chosen, the real work began. Abdulwahab and Mohammad both knew that they had to offer something different and they did it exceptionally well. Trying out different ingredients in order to make their menu spotless wasn’t an easy task but they were finally able to come out with some delicious dishes. One of their best sellers, the Black Magic uses the black bun served with real truffle, truffle mayonnaise, and caramelized onions as the addition of the Swiss cheese on top just adds to the perfection. Their signature dish, the Eats Burger, is what you all would want in the burger in addition to their juicy signature sauce. If you’re trying to take it a little easy, try their Skinny Burger, which is high in satisfaction and low in guilt as it’s served with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, low-fat cheese, and low-fat sauce in a wholewheat bun. Not in the mood for a burger? Well, that’s completely fine as you can get your hands on their Spicy Glazed Shrimps that comes with just the right touch of sweet and heat! It is also very important to keep in mind that all burgers available at ‘Eats’ is made with Angus Beef and it’s all natural as they do not add anything to the meat itself, which adds a lot to the juiciness of their food.

60

‫المشهد المحلي‬

Furthermore, all their food is provided by local suppliers and their customized buns are baked fresh daily as well. In short, they provide their customers with simple food and high quality ingredients. The beautiful industrial setting offered is perfect for anyone looking for something different. The bricks mixed with the pipelines and some great old antiques provides a little of the ‘old-fashioned look’. As many other places have gone with very modernized settings, ‘Eats’ reminds us that just because things look old and different, it certainly doesn’t mean that it’s no longer inviting. In regards to the pricing, it is quite reasonable and you will get your money’s worth in the end with the amazing meal of your choice. For all the breakfast lovers out there, be sure to stay tuned on their social media as they will be offering breakfast soon during weekends starting at 8:00 AM! Are you craving a burger by now? Well, make sure to take time out of your day for a meal that will definitely be worth it at ‘Eats’ restaurant. From The Owners: “We absolutely love burgers and consider ourselves fanatics! After spending so much time trying out different restaurants and recipes, we were finally able to come out with this restaurant.” Timings: Weekdays: 5:00 PM – 1:00 AM Weekends: 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM & 5:00 PM – 1:00 AM Social Media: Instagram: @eatskw Website: www.eatskw.com Orders: 66133006/9

Them Calories Though... Counting them can Always Help

HEALTH

Counting calories can be very complicated to many people, especially for those who have never counted the calories that they consume daily. Many foods contain a substantial amount of calories that our bodies actually need to function.

Calories can come from various foods you consume, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins and also sweets. A calorie is simply the measure of the energy in the foods and drinks that you consume. An average man needs around 2500 calories to maintain his weight (10,500KJ or 2,500Kcal). For women who want to maintain their weight, they need around 8,400Kj (2,000Kcal) a day. The amount of energy needed is based on a person’s age, lifestyle and size. For example, when it comes to lifestyle, it is based on how active you are and how quickly you burn these calories. For men, make sure you include these super foods in your daily diet: Bananas: Rich in potassium, which is needed to regulate nerves, heartbeat and blood pressure.

Pause & Ponder... Overrating Josep Guardiola

What makes a manager reach the legendary status? We, as fans, throw the word ‘legend’ around a lot more than we should and it has lost its meaning. A prime example of all this is Josep Guardiola. Has he reached legendary status?

“Josep Guardiola has revolutionized football.” Possibly.

Josep Guardiola has created what once seemed impossible during his time with Barcelona with all the titles he won and his introduction of the once flawless ‘Tiki-Taka’ game-play. With that said, it is extremely vital to keep in mind that Guardiola grew up with the team though. He was a player with the squad before deciding to begin a coaching career as he was hired to manage the youth team. Afterwards, he moved up to the senior squad where he was able to make a name for himself. Coaching Barcelona isn’t an easy task but it is definitely easier when you have grown up knowing everything about the club.

70

‫أخبار كرة القدم األوروبية‬

“Guardiola has proven that he can rise up to any challenge.” False.

How can that statement even be said when he hasn’t really risen to any challenge? After managing Barcelona, the Spanish manager decided that he should take a year sabbatical in New York in order to improve his English. It seemed as though he may be taking a coaching job in England with that decision and many people were excited to see where he would choose to go. The news finally came out and he decided to join Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich! This is a team that has won EVERYTHING in the year before he joined. There was no challenge there and there was definitely no room for any more improvement. A manager of Guardiola’s supposed calibre should be able to take over a struggling club and add an extra ‘push’ to them in order to make them a force in Europe. Choosing to manage Bayern Munich is simply the wrong choice for him. He’s still quite young though and he has time to change that once he decides to leave the German club... Will he choose to finally pick a challenge? I definitely hope so!

“Guardiola has improved Bayern Munich.” On the contrary.

Josep Guardiola decided to join the German champions as he knew for a fact that no part of the team needed improving. He has been able to continuously win the German League since his arrival but that is definitely no challenge in a league that is way below their standards. Therefore, we shift our focus to the UEFA Champions League and that proves that he hasn’t improved the team at all but rather made them worse since his arrival. Being completely outplayed by Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past two seasons, Bayern Munich have not been able to reach the heights that they got to before his arrival with him in charge.

“Josep Guardiola is a legendary manager.” Not yet. Let me give you an example about who I think is a

legendary manager before going forward with all this: Jose Mourinho. Mourinho has accomplished so much and has been able to win the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto and Inter Milan. These are two teams that are never favorites to win the competition and he was able to make a distant dream a reality! It’s true that he has had a few upsets during his career but that doesn’t take away his unbelievable accomplishments! Guardiola hasn’t been able to do that. During his time off after leaving Barcelona, I was extremely excited to see if he would choose a team such as Liverpool. This is a team with an extremely rich history that needed the extra push to make them one of the greats again. It would have been extremely interesting to see Guardiola take over and make it happen! But no, instead of doing that, he decided to take the easy route. Any manager who takes the easy route simply cannot be considered legendary. There is still time though and things may change.

Jürgen Klopp What to Expect at the Kop!

Oh what a happy day is was for Liverpool fans worldwide as Jürgen Klopp was officially unveiled as their new manager after the dismissal of their previous manager, Brendan Rodgers. Can Klopp improve Liverpool? Who is he? What can he offer?

At his opening press conference, there was a sense of happiness and of some hope that Liverpool have been missing for quite some time now. The German manager showed his delight at signing for the club and he was extremely eager to start working right away. That’s the thing with Klopp, he won’t go for the big guns such as Real Madrid or Manchester City but rather his expertise lies in managing a club that has a lot of potential but simply cannot find it yet… After his spell was over with Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool was the obvious choice of club. Many managers have come and gone from Liverpool with so many promises but usually left empty-handed. For some reason, it may not be the same when it comes to Jürgen Klopp. We are talking about a man who loves to thrive under this type of pressure and he is more than prepared to take this challenge and do everything he can to bring Liverpool back up.

72

‫أخبار كرة القدم األوروبية‬

I always say we don’t have to be the best team in the world, we just have to be able to beat the best team in the world.

Transformation

Demanding Yet Loving

The Fun Side

Bringing Down The Big Guns

Klopp has completely transformed Borussia Dortmund during his time there but, of course, it took some time. The German international was able to make the team a force to be reckoned with and he can do the same in England. Liverpool have the winning mentality (well, most of them do at least) and therefore he will need to channel that into the matches. With his personality, he can definitely make it work but the fans need to be patient.

That famous smile of his has a lot of meaning behind it and it’s a smile that we will see being transmitted to the players. Klopp loves to have fun in the game and that is one of the major components behind his success. He plays very serious football but, at the same time, he needs them to enjoy the 90 minutes that they spend on the pitch.

Jürgen Klopp will be seen hugging, hi-fiving and having a laugh with his players but, at the same time, he will be extremely demanding of them. “It’s a rule to give all and it can make the difference if you work more. If you don’t have to give all and you still win, what’s this? Those who only give me 99 percent in training will have huge problems. The team will have to work and push like it never has before...”

“You always want to be the team that can beat the one with more money” is a quote that Klopp has said and has stuck with throughout his years of coaching. In his opinion, the team that has the passion is always better than the one with all the money and therefore teams such as Chelsea and Manchester City will need to be wary of taking Liverpool lightly.

Jürgen Klopp’s first game in charge of Liverpool was against Tottenham Hotspur and, even though they came out in a 0-0 draw at the end, there was a sense of belief around the stadium. Jürgen Klopp knows for a fact that there is no ‘magical cure’ to improving the team but, if there was one, he would have it. This will be a very interesting time for the Kop and it remains to be seen what we can expect. Jürgen Klopp, Welcome to the Kop!

V-KOOL® Competition Winner October's ''Koolest Personality''

In collaboration with V-KOOL®, we went on a quest to find the koolest students on campus across different categories. The winner of each month would get free shading on their car from V-KOOL®! Last month’s category was “Koolest Personality”, and Cléa Roche won! Want to be a part of this competition? Make sure that you let us know by emailing: info@ph7-kw.com!

Tell us a little about yourself My name is Cléa Roche and I’m 22 years old. I study Management and Finance at the American University of Kuwait. I am French but I’ve lived in Kuwait for 8 years. I love traveling around the world and I have the Wanderlust syndrome so I need to travel at least three times a year! I am also a certified scuba diver and I enjoy trying new activities and never say no to crazy ideas. What do you think of when purchasing a car? When purchasing a car, I look for design, style and comfort. I am into sport cars but I wouldn’t get one in Kuwait because I would be scared of people’s driving around me when I have a fast car. I prefer jeeps for security reasons. I also love flashy colors and when a car stands out. I don’t like having the same car as everyone else. How do you feel about the atmosphere at your university campus? It was better for me a couple years ago mainly because most of my close friends have graduated since then. I still really enjoy being here though and I will be leaving with a lot of memories. Also, the Professors here are great! If you asked your best friend to describe you, what would they say? They would say: “Well Cléa has been the closest person to me for years now and if anyone can describe her it’s me and I can tell you that no one is more loyal, honest and there for you more than her. She is the one to go to for advice and help with anything whatsoever and she always knew how to make me happy when I was sad. I’m very glad she is a part of my life. Truly one of a kind.” If you were to describe your personality in one sentence, what would it be? Well I guess I am loyal and honest I love helping people. I am shy at first but I turn out to be kind of crazy sometimes. Any last words for the readers? Thank you for taking time to read this and THANKS FOR VOTING FOR ME!

Talent Competition Winner October's Beatboxer

Are you a student in Kuwait with a talent that deserves to be seen? If so then here is your chance, STUDENTALK wants you! Email us at: info@ph7-kw.com Tell us more about yourself My name is Asaad Al-Dajani and I am currently a business student at ACK, doing my second semester in Business Management. I have two hobbies, which are going to the gym and the second is beatboxing

Any last words for the readers? I used to hang out with people a while back who thought I was crazy because I was making these weird sounds with my mouth and they didn’t understand what I was trying to do no matter how much I improved. If you are able

to impress people, that is what pushes you and you should surround yourself around those people to get the motivation that you need. If you have a goal, keep fighting for it. You can do it as long as it is what you really want.

What is your talent? My talent is beatboxing. I love it and I’ve been doing it since I was 15. Up until today, I keep trying to improve myself. I began after hearing a person called Stringo. After that, I went home and looked at YouTube videos about it and enhance my skills. I wanted to learn more about it and see if it’s actually something that I could do. How did you develop your talent? When I first heard it, I was really into the idea of drumming but wasn’t able to get a drum set at home. So, when I heard beatboxing, it was something that sort of sounds like a drum and it got me hooked right away. I wanted to be able to make those sounds and create those beats. The fact that I had the opportunity to do it without having to actually purchase anything made it even more intriguing. What are your future plans? I don’t have a future plan in beatboxing but I have done a few shows in Kuwait, whether it was paid or just for fun. I plan to graduate and continue my Masters in Canada. I want to get a diploma in computer programming as well because it is something that I am really interested in as well. Who supported your talent? All of my friends at the time and today have given me continuous support and my mother has also been able to support and motivate me to continue doing this. Did you encounter any obstacles? Yes, I did. My main obstacle was actually my father because he was really against it at first as he saw it was very westernized. With time though, he heard the things that I could do and saw how serious I was about it. After that, he became a lot more lenient and accepting with the whole thing.

This month may begin a little roughly for you but it will all work out in the end, yet you have to be prepared! Anything that is worth it will require hard work and that is exactly what is expected of you this coming month.

This won’t be the most positive of months for you. There will be many problems that arise but there will also be great life lessons at the end that will help you with your future. You’re going to need to stay strong and positive through it all.

November is a difficult month for the Gemini but it certainly not anything they cannot handle! Financially though, this could be a positive month for you and it will be a month you will probably look back on with a lot of positives.

Strength and perseverance will be two of your strong suits this month as you will feel as though you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders in your personal life. Professionally, things look like they’re going smoothly and you have some time to focus on other aspects.

Well, this is an interesting and probably memorable month for you! The amount of work you have will be slightly difficult to manage but your personal life could not be going any better. The positives will definitely outweigh the negatives for the month.

Everything seems to be going wrong for you right now but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Make sure you’re able to deal with it all now because it will be worth it once it’s over. In regards to work, things are going smoothly though, which is always great!

Work, work, work! This is a busy month for you but you enjoy feeling challenged. Focus on the workload and you will have time to sit back and relax once it’s all over. As always, give it your best and you’ll be proud of it all at the end.

November is the month that you have been looking forward to for a while. After a rough few months, this is where you have the opportunity to relax and take time for yourself so make the most of it before life gets busy once again.

Feeling a little bit confused? That’s normal! There is a lot happening around you and it feels like you just simply do not have the time to cope with it all. Try to sit back for a while and look at the bigger picture in order to organize it all a little better.

The positives and the negatives combine this month and it’s up to you on which one will take over the other. Make sure that everything is organized well and focus on the topics that are important. That’s one way that you can come out with the most positive outcome.

A smooth and fairly comfortable month awaits you as everything seems to be running according to plan. With that said, there will be some bumps along the way but nothing that you cannot handle. Enjoy it before things get hectic once again!
